Armer Farmhouse

Located in a hilltop, the site offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by four beautiful, old California live oaks. The house, its driveway and parking area were accomodated in the site’s flattened area to respect the terrain as much possible, and to simplify the construction process.

A modern take to the classic farmhouse style.

Located in the beautiful countryside of Royal Oaks, California, the house went through a full exterior and interior re-design. A neutral palette was used to allow for the surrounding landscape — an oak forest and colourful flowers and bushes — to shine.

Before the project started, the layouts and exteriors of the house had already been designed by another architect, but the clients requested a remodel of the façades to create a modern version of a classic white farmhouse. Materials in neutral colours were selected to create a contrast with the lush, colorfoul landscape design, while the windows and doors were expanded in size from the original design to bring in the views of the natural landscape as much possible.

Only California native plants and trees were used for the landscape design. For soil erosion control, shrubs were planted on the hills of the site, while colourful trees were added throughout the garden to create a contrast with the white walls of the house.

Wei Residence

Minimalistic, hacienda-style home for soon-to-be empty nesters.

A dream home for a recently retired couple living in Victoria, British Columbia. A U-shaped layout was requested by the client to ensure the private and social areas were separated by a wild garden, which also served as the main entrance and an outdoor cinema space. Furthermore, the design includes arched windows, nooks and framed walls throughout the home to spotlight painting and sculptures — in tune with the client’s love for art and antiques.

Location: Victoria, British Columbia Area: 4,300 sqft

Before purchasing a site, the client wanted to develop a preliminary design of the house to get a sense of the overall look, size and potential cost.

The design started off with the client’s sketch, dividing the house into two “wings”, one for the kitchen, dining and storage area, and the second for bedrooms, bathrooms and an utility room. The living room — the heart of the home — connects both wings to the back garden of the property.

Building Blocks

Design of a shipping container home.

The one non-negotiable for the design: the house needed to be built with shipping containers. The design breaks from the traditional construction system in Honduras — concrete block — and served as an opportunity to explore a more cost-effective, simpler, yet comfortable living alternative.

Year: 2020

Location: San Pedro Sula, Honduras Area: 1,950 sqft

To ease the accommodation of the shipping containers, a rectangular-shaped site was purchased. A combination of 40 feet and 20 feet containers was used to comply with all the living spaces required:

1. SHAPE AND SIZE

A typical lot in the city, measuring 40ft x 80 ft

2. PUBLIC SPACES

Comprised of the living, dining and kitchen areas

3. EXTRA SPACES

A gym and staircase unit using 20ft containers

4. PRIVATE SPACES

A master bedroom and two additional bedrooms

5. SEMI-OPEN

Three pergola roofs to semi-outdoor spaces

6. VEGETATION

Planted trees to protect from the intense heat

Multiple layers were added to the house’s exterior to protect the shipping containers from the heat, which averages 32 degrees Celsius all-year-round, and to give the house a more traditional look and feel.

4 x 6 House

Luxury, tiny home divided into different floor levels.

A rarity in the Torontonian urban landscape, with a permissable buildable area of 4 x 6 meters. Each floor accommodates a different use, starting from the ground floor with a mixed dining and kitchen space, a formal / informal living room in the second floor and a master suite at the top.

Year: 2022

Location: Toronto, Ontario Area: 1,300 sqft

Located in th east part of Toronto, the site measures 7.47 x 6.10 m wide total, yet only 4 x 6.10m could be used for the house construction, leaving the clear area as a front yard. Replicating the same area in floor was key to maximize the site’s use.

1.TYPICAL CITY SITE
PROJECT SITE
3. BUILDABLE AREA 4 X 6 M 4. SECOND FLOOR - LIVING ROOM

The exterior was inspired by the townhouses found in downtown Toronto, with narrow frontages, tall windows, and brick walls. The interiors were designed with a luxe and contemporary look in mind.

The master suite was placed on the top floor since it is the space with the least usage,

The living room was placed in the third floor to be in line with the treetops in the sidewalk.

The ground floor provides a mixed dining-kitchen area to provide ease for circulation.

The basement was designed as a multi-functional space: office, hang-out area and guest bedroom with the sofacouch.

Remembering Howard Backen

Clean and simple lines run through the main house, with a porch extending across the living room, dining room and kitchen. A separate building, inspired by a big old barn, was built as a guest house and enterntainment space.

Bringing one of Backen’s most iconic designs from reality to rendering.

Howard Backen, an inspirational architect that redefined the aesthetic landscape of Napa Valley, designed the Kutcher-Kunis residence in 2021. This project is my attempt to bring the project’s stunning images — published in Architectural Digest — from reality to rendering. I made this in remembrance of Howard Backen’s incredible work throughout his lifetime, and by no means am I taking credit for the residence’s architectural and interior design.

Year: 2025

Location: Los Angeles, California

Area: 30,000 sqft

In tune with Howard Backen’s architectural style, the design included high-sloped roofs, exposed wooden roof beams and rugged textures in the walls and floors. Large glass windows and doors give the house a contemporary feel, and lighten the spaces with as much sun exposure as possible. The richness in materials and textures is counterbalanced with simle building geometries for the main house, the entertainemnt barn and the barbecue and grill semi-open space. The simple shaped pool helps differentiate between the main house, accessed through a stone path to the foyer, from the spaces built for visitors.
