EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S

The Mississippi River has always been a place where movement tells a story of people, commerce, culture, and connection. In this edition of PortLog, that story comes into sharp focus as we explore how the Port of South Louisiana continues to serve as both an economic engine and a community anchor for the River Parishes and beyond.

For me personally, this edition also marks a meaningful homecoming. Returning to the Port of South Louisiana as Executive Director is both an honor and a responsibility I carry with deep pride. This Port helped shape my professional path, and stepping back into this role feels less like a new beginning and more like a continuation of a mission I believe in deeply. I am energized by the opportunity to lead this organization, work alongside an exceptional team, and help guide the Port forward during an important moment of growth and opportunity.

This issue reflects a moment of momentum. Across our 54-mile jurisdiction, we are investing in infrastructure that strengthens resilience, expanding partnerships that amplify our regional impact, and supporting tenants who are modernizing operations to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global marketplace. At the same time, we remain deeply rooted in the communities we serve, where culture, history, and opportunity flow together just as steadily as the river itself.

Inside these pages, you’ll read about the opening of the Globalplex Dock Access Bridge, a critical investment that enhances reliability, improves safety, and ensures uninterrupted access to one of our most important logistics

hubs. You’ll also see how collaboration among the five Lower Mississippi River deep-draft ports is moving from study to action through a unified marketing strategy—positioning south Louisiana to compete and win on a global stage.

This edition also highlights the power of partnership. From Associated Terminals’ investment in state-of-the-art, allelectric cranes to continued expansion and innovation at the Port of South Louisiana Airport, our tenants and teams are raising standards while keeping people at the center of everything we do. These stories underscore a simple truth: infrastructure and equipment matter, but it is the people behind the work who drive performance, safety, and longterm success.

Equally important, this issue celebrates the culture and character of the River Parishes. Our local festivals, traditions, and shared heritage are not just points of pride. They are part of what makes this region a place where people want to live, work, and invest. Economic growth is strongest when it enhances quality of life, and that balance remains central to our mission.

As you read this edition of PortLog, I hope you see a Port that is quietly doing the hard work every day—moving cargo, supporting jobs, strengthening supply chains, and planning responsibly for the future. We are not driven by headlines, but by results. And those results are made possible through collaboration, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the communities we serve.

TRANSPORTATION CENTER OF THE AMERICAS

The state legislature established the Port of South Louisiana in 1960 to promote commerce and industrial development along the 54-mile stretch of the Mississippi River that runs through the St. Charles, St. John and St. James tri-parish regions.

NUMBER OF VESSEL CALLS: 3,534

PHILOSOPHY

The Port’s philosophy of development is to entice companies to set up regional operations within its boundaries. The Port serves primarily as a “landlord” port to more than 30 grain, petroleum and chemical companies. The exception to this is the port-owned world-class intermodal Globalplex facility SoLaPort, and the St. James Westbank property.

WORLD’S LARGEST PORT DISTRICT

The ports of South Louisiana, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, St. Bernard and Plaquemines make up the world’s largest continuous port district. They are responsible for moving one-fifth of all U.S. foreign waterborne commerce.

FACILITIES

Within the Port’s jurisdiction, there are seven grain elevators, multiple midstreaming operations, more than 40 liquid and dry-bulk terminals, the Globalplex Intermodal Terminal and the Port’s Executive Regional Airport.

PORT AREA

The Port covers a 54-mile stretch of the lower Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The Port begins at river mile 114.9AHP near the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and winds through St. Charles, St. John the Baptist and St. James parishes. It continues north to river mile 168.5AHP just north of the Sunshine Bridge.

MISSION

The Port is charged with a mission to promote maritime commerce, trade and development, and to establish public and private partnerships for the creation of intermodal terminals and industrial facilities.

GOVERNANCE

The Port is under the jurisdiction of the state of Louisiana and authorized by the state constitution. A ninemember board of commissioners directs the Port; all of them are unsalaried.

MAKING THE MAGIC HAPPEN

The Alignment Between Event Organizers and Local Government Leaders Has Allowed River Parish Festivals To Flourish As A Cultural Phenomenon Uniquely Our Own.

No other tangible entity – annual gatherings offering unrivaled sensory experiences in sight, sound, taste, and touch – encapsulates the intangible spirit of a region and its people better than River Parish festivals.

A tradition dating back generations, these annual rituals in St. James, St. John and St. Charles parishes collectively draw more than 100,000 attendees and have seen a substantial recent uptick in out-ofregion, out-of-state, and even out-of-country tourists

thanks to the proliferation of travel blogs, vlogs and television series documenting these organic cultural congregations.

Essentially, these River Parish festivals are a genuine reflection of “us” designed to be seen and shared with “everyone else.”

“While pictures and videos on social media are great, there’s nothing like actually being at the event,” said St. James Parish President Pete

Dufresne. “Come enjoy the music. Come taste the gumbo. Come be a part of something truly special and experience for yourself a little bit of what makes St. James Parish the place we love to call home.”

“Community events like our local festivals bring people together,” President Dufresne continued. “Not only is it an opportunity to show off our unique culture on a major platform, but they help to preserve our culture.”

Noting the cultural importance of festivals, the reverence locals have for them, and the role they play both economically and exposing others to the best aspects of the River Region, parish officials have taken on larger supporting roles in the past 10 years or so when it comes to staging these festivals.

For example, in February 2025, St. John Parish President Jaclyn Hotard and her internal tourism marketing team were given multiple awards for

their cutting-edge multimedia promotional campaign for the annual Andouille Festival in LaPlace – an event that routinely attracts 20,000+ patrons and just celebrated its 50th anniversary last fall.

While peppering multiple media — both traditional (newspaper, TV and radio) and new-age (various social media platforms) — is important for raising awareness and attracting attendees, ensuring a smooth, safe and enjoyable experience is just as critical to the long-term viability of these events.

“Our festival hosts are very intentional about making sure tourists from as close as the next parish over, to tourists from all over the world, receive a warm welcome to local events. Many times, tourists come for these events but stay to tour the region. It’s also great word-of-mouth advertising. We often hear tourists say their friends came and told them St. James Parish is the place to be.”

According to St. Charles Parish President Matthew Jewell, government officials work closely with

festival organizers several months in advance to tackle the logistical hurdles associated with putting on such elaborate and multi-faceted cultural experiences. For larger festivals like the parish’s July 3rd Alligator Festival (which also serves local student by raising scholarship funds through event revenue), St. Charles’ Public Works provides barricades and codes to assist traffic flow/parking efficiency, and set ups lighting for crowd control during the evening. Additionally, Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness collaborate with festival organizers so that local law enforcement and first responders are fully briefed on the event’s logistical makeup and hourly schedule.

“St. Charles Parish proudly supports and promotes the fairs and festivals organized by our community,” President Jewell said. “These events give residents quality entertainment close to home, strengthen our local economy, and often give back in meaningful ways.”

In the end, the weeks and months of cooperative effort between civilian and civic leaders, creates

memorable something-for-everyone experiences for those who come from near or far.

On average, 8,000 to 10,000 revelers attend the three-day Festival of the Bonfires in Lutcher Park every mid-December. The music and food-filled weekend celebration is the perfect primer for the spectacle that is the Christmas Eve bonfire lightings along the Mississippi River levee – a tradition with an unknown exact origin but dates back more than a century. The most commonly-accepted reason behind the blazes concludes they were set by German and French settlers in St. James Parish to light a clear path for “Papa Noel.”

In St. John, the aforementioned Andouille Festival has been a mark-your-calendar and cancel-all-plans phenomenon since the 1970s. Held on the grounds of the St. John Community Center off Highway 51, the soundtrack for the festival is provident by an expansive list of bands and is packed full with food vendors, local artists, pageants and multiple run/walk races.

Not to be outdone, St. Charles Parish continues to validate its title as “Catfish Capital of the Word.”

Longtime home of the Louisiana Catfish Festival in Des Allmands, St. Charles now home to the King Kat Fishing Trail competition held in Lac Des Allmands and the Mississippi where several dozen angler teams – of adults and kids – try and catch the biggest catfish found anywhere on the planet.

“The River Parishes have a distinct culture, separate from New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or the Bayou Region,” President Jewell said, “and festivals help preserve and showcase that identity. ...These festivals celebrate our heritage, build community pride, and help share our story with a wider audience.”

LEADING THE RIVER

Rooted in the River Parishes

Long before she was thinking about tonnage and tenants, the Port was already part of Julia Fisher-Cormier’s landscape. A third-generation St. Charles Parish native, she grew up with the Mississippi River as a constant presence. The woman who once watched ships and barges move downriver with childhood curiosity now serves as Executive Director of the Port of South Louisiana.

Looking back, Fisher-Cormier remembers being captivated by the sound of ship horns echoing in the humid air. At the same time, she was taught to respect the river and understand its force—a working river, not a beach or lake to swim in.

As a child, she didn’t understand what the vessels carried or where they were headed, only that the river connected her community to something much bigger.

BUILT ON COMMUNITY

Fisher-Cormier’s connection to the River Parishes runs deeper than geography. Her family’s story in St. Charles Parish began when both of her grandfathers moved their families to the West Bank during a period of industrial growth and new job opportunities for American families. With an entrepreneurial spirit, her paternal grandfather, L.K. Fisher, left New Orleans and opened a furniture store and became an early developer of what would later become modern St. Charles, building both a business and a life rooted in the community in which he also served as a parish government official.. Her maternal grandfather, Paul McManus, left Franklin County, Mississippi to help construct Lion Oil’s new plant facility in Luling. The plant would later be acquired by Monsanto Corporation, where pay for general employees was about $.90 an hour at the time. Paul would spend a career as a mechanical specialist at the same plant he helped to construct, while raising his family in St. Charles until his passing in 2000.

“My family’s story is a true example of the generational opportunities that come from industrial growth along the Mississippi River—when new plants and new businesses arrive, they don’t just create jobs in the moment; they create pathways for families to build stability, invest in their community, and imagine a bigger future for the next generation,” she said.

Growing up, Fisher-Cormier spent Saturdays and summers in the family furniture business, working alongside her father and mother in the store her grandfather opened. She learned the rhythms of a small, family-run operation—greeting customers by name, helping on the floor, and seeing firsthand how a local business becomes part of the fabric of a community.

“Growing up in my family’s furniture store long before the days of big retail stores and Amazon, I knew just about every family in my community,” Fisher-Cormier said.

She learned early that progress only matters when it improves the quality of life for the people around you.

“From a young age, I also took an interest in reading our local weekly newspaper and watching the local council meetings on public television,” she said. “I believe that formed my sense of awareness for the challenges that families and communities face. Working alongside neighbors, I saw the impact we could make together.”

Those early lessons shaped her sense of responsibility and set her on a path toward public service and leadership.

ENTERING THE PORT

Fisher-Cormier joined the Port in January 2020 as Assistant Director of Business Development, working alongside Linda Prudhomme. From her first day, she saw that every decision required balancing complex logistics with the needs of both industry and the surrounding community.

Three months later, the pandemic upended daily operations and the global economy. With much of the world slowing down, Fisher-Cormier immersed herself in research, learning about the maritime industry and the Port ’s role as a critical artery connecting local communities to global trade. Even as the world shut down, the river kept moving, reflecting the Port ’s importance beyond St. Charles Parish.

“Most think of the Port in terms of ships, cargo, and infrastructure,” Fisher-Cormier explained. “Over time, I came to understand its deeper role as an engine of economic opportunity, a steward of the mighty Mississippi, and a partner to business and industry. The Port is about people. Our work touches lives in ways I hadn’t fully appreciated at first.”

She came to see the Port not just as infrastructure, but as a force that directly affects jobs, families, and opportunity.

COMING HOME TO LEAD

After gaining hands-on experience at the Port and having served 11 years on St. Charles Parish Council, FisherCormier was called to serve her state by Governor Landry at Louisiana’s Department of Transportation & Development. For two years in two senior executive positions, she helped shape transportation policy and implement historic reform measures. She earned a reputation as one of the state’s newest innovative and pragmatic thinkers.

When the Port’s Executive Director position opened, the decision to pursue it was rooted in purpose.

“The Port is home for me, and I felt called to bring everything I’d learned back to serve my region,” Fisher-Cormier said.

Competing against candidates from across the country reinforced how special the Port and the community are.

“There were moments of clarity where I realized that my deep connection to this community and my broad experience set me apart,” she said. “I did my best to show the Board my vision and my hear t for this work.”

When she learned the Board’s decision was unanimous, she felt “immense gratitude, relief, and responsibility all at once. It was a moment of joy, but also the start of a new chapter and a big commitment.”

She believes the Commission chose her for her passion for the region, her ability to lead through change, and her commitment to balancing tradition with innovation.

“My experience at both the Port and the state level gave me a unique perspective,” she said. “But more than anything, I hope they saw someone deeply invested in the well-being of our people and the future of the Port.”

Now at the helm of one of the largest ports in the Western Hemisphere, Fisher-Cormier brings both deep local roots and broad experience to her leadership.

“The Port of South Louisiana is a powerhouse,” she said, “but beyond the numbers, it’s the backbone of our local economy. It supports thousands of jobs, connects our farmers and manufacturers to the world, and serves as a gateway for opportunity. What happens at the Port affects families, businesses, and the nation’s future.”

Even with such scale, she keeps a careful eye on the future.

“I think about the responsibility in making sure we plan for resilience, so that the Port continues to thrive and support our community for generations to come,” she said.

For her, success isn’t just about growth, it means strengthening the Lower Mississippi River’s economic impact through historic collaboration between the five deep water ports, solidifying Louisiana as a place of innovation and opportunity for everyone.

“Most of all, I want to see our region prosper, and for people here to feel proud of what the Port represents,” she said.

Even on the longest days, Fisher-Cormier finds motivation in the people the Port serves.

“I remember my own root s in this community, and how service has always been at the heart of my purpose,” she said.

Her message to young leaders in the River Parishes is simple.

“No dream is too big, and no challenge is insurmountable if you’re willing to put your head down and work hard, learn, and stay true to your values,” she said. “There will be obstacles, but there will also be supporters and mentors who help you rise.”

For Julia Fisher-Cormier, the journey from a child mesmerized by the river to leading the Port of South Louisiana is a reminder that home, community, and purpose are never far apart. They flow together like the river she has always called hers.

ACROSS THE RIVER AND BACK

Engineering Resilience at Globalplex

On Feb. 25, during one of those early spring days in south Louisiana when the temperature is perfect, roughly 100 state and local officials, members of the Port of South Louisiana’s Board of Commissioners, Port executives and representatives from RNGD — the Louisiana-based construction firm that built the project — and stakeholders gathered at the base of the new Globalplex Dock Access Bridge to mark its opening.

Instead of cutting a ribbon to officially launch the bridge, Julia Fisher-Cormier, Executive Director of PortSL, climbed into the cab of an enormous MACK truck and drove straight through it as commissioners, contractors and port staff applauded.

“This is about our shared commitment to building infrastructure that works, day in and day out,”

Fisher-Cormier said. “Every day this port and the industry in our jurisdiction quietly do the hard work of moving energy products, agricultural goods, steel, chemicals and manufacturing materials that power our nation and feed our world.”

The moment marked the official opening of the 1,100-foot Dock Access Bridge — the Port’s new secondary connection between the Globalplex main facility and warehousing and its Mississippi River general cargo dock.

“The Dock Access Bridge represents more than just infrastructure. It reflects years of collaboration, planning, and hard work,” said Micah Cormier, Chief Commercial Officer at PortSL.

THE RISK OF A SINGLE POINT OF ACCESS

For decades, access to the Globalplex dock depended on a single bridge.

For a port that moves more tonnage than any other in the Western Hemisphere, relying on a single bridge was more than an inconvenience. It was a structural vulnerability. If the original crossing became unavailable due to maintenance, high water or an emergency, vessel calls had to be diverted. Cargo schedules stalled. Trucks backed up. Revenue shifted to competing Gulf ports.

The new dock access bridge, 24 feet wide and designed as a parallel route to the original crossing, changes that calculus.

BUILDING ALONG A LIVING RIVER

Stretching from the Globalplex facility off River Road, over the Mississippi River levee and connecting to the primary dock, the bridge is engineered to support 1,000 pounds per square foot — enough to carry fully loaded trailer trucks and oversized industrial equipment. It provides uninterrupted dock access even if one crossing is taken out of service and introduces a circular truck traffic pattern that reduces congestion and accelerates loading operations.

But building a second access point along the Mississippi River required navigating more than engineering challenges. High water, complex permitting requirements and layered funding approvals all shaped the project’s timeline.

During construction in the spring of 2025, crews were repeatedly sidelined by high water. Whenever the Mississippi rose above +11 feet — which it did several times in March and April — work along the levee and riverfront had to stop entirely. During peak flood season from March to May, levels can surge to +15 feet, shutting down marine operations for weeks.

RNGD responded with a dynamic construction model, incorporating real-time water monitoring into daily planning and developing multiple execution scenarios that could pivot as river conditions changed. When the water dropped, crews accelerated. When it rose, materials and equipment were strategically demobilized to minimize downtime.

Engineering around the levee posed another challenge. Conventional pile driving through the flood protection system was not permitted. Instead, the team designed a cast-in-place pile system supported by thickened concrete spread footings that distribute structural loads without compromising levee integrity.

The project also required close coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers due to its proximity to the Mississippi River levee system. Permitting reviews and compliance requirements added layers of oversight to the

construction process. At the same time, the bridge was funded through a combination of Federal Maritime Administration support and the State of Louisiana’s Capital Outlay program, requiring alignment across multiple agencies.

In the river, concrete pilings were driven into the riverbed by marine crews working in active current conditions. Precast caps were installed at a pace of two per day, followed by deck planks and a four-inch concrete topping slab to create a level surface ready for heavy port traffic. A certified steel span carries the bridge over River Road, completing the connection.

“Building the Globalplex Access Bridge was a true team effort — one that required exceptional collaboration between our crews and the Port of South Louisiana every step of the way,” said Stephen Abadie, Executive Vice President of Infrastructure at RNGD. “We’re incredibly proud of what this project represents for the region’s infrastructure and the lasting impact it will have on commerce along the Mississippi.”

INFRASTRUCTURE THAT KEEPS COMMERCE MOVING

The Port of South Louisiana spans 54 miles along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge and ranks as the nation’s leading grain exporter and second-largest energy transfer port. It anchors an industrial corridor of refineries, petrochemical plants and logistics facilities that depend on uninterrupted river access.

“We are not a show horse. We are a work horse. And that distinction matters,” said Fisher-Cormier. “Our success is measured not by our headlines but by our tonnage moved, vessels served, jobs supported and communities strengthened.”

Completed and operational, the Globalplex Dock Access Bridge ensures continuous dock connectivity, strengthens cargo reliability and positions

the Port to support future industrial expansion across the River Parishes.

“Globalplex brings together river, rail and highway connectivity, all in one strategic location. It is positioned to support existing tenants while attracting new industrial investment to the river region,” said Fisher-Cormier.

The river will rise again. Flood seasons will come and go. But this time, the PortSL can continuously handle these changes. And on opening day, instead of cutting a ribbon, the Port of South Louisiana drove straight through it.

MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER

As a Unified Marketing Strategy between the 5 Deep-Draft Lower Mississippi River Ports continues to take shape, it marks another cooperative step toward maximizing economic impact and operational efficiency

Phase 2 of a reimagined, reconfigured, and reinvigorated collective modus operandi involving the Port of South Louisiana, Port of New Orleans, St. Bernard Port, Port of Greater Baton Rouge, and Louisiana Gateway Port at Plaquemines Parish is nearing completion.

Officially ushering in a new era of collaboration with the ground-breaking comprehensive joint study titled the “Lower Mississippi River Commodity Analysis” -- the factual foundation from which industry stakeholders, maritime commerce officials, economic development leaders, and local and state governments will form strategic methods used to fortify operational/procedural strengths and address weaknesses or inefficiencies, thus ensuring the region’s long-term stability and growth in an ultra-competitive global marketplace – the 5 Lower Mississippi River Deep-Draft Ports are putting the finishing touches on a “Unified Marketing Strategy.”

Developed with the assistance of a third-party consulting firm, this Unified Marketing Strategy (UMS) creates a regional marketing “framework” that correlates messaging, branding, and strategic outreach across the five ports. In doing so, this plan – which has been proven effective when implemented within other geographic port clusters domestic and abroad –should increase efficiency, eliminate (or at least reduce) duplicate efforts, and fortify south Louisiana’s foothold as a key global shipping chess piece.

“The (Cargo Analysis) Study provided a shared data foundation, identifying opportunities and gaps across the port system,” said Micah Cormier, the Chief Commercial Officer at the Port of South Louisiana.

“A Unified Marketing Strategy is the logical next step because it moves from understanding the market to jointly acting on that information – aligning messaging, outreach, and target segments across all five deep-water draft ports.

“Expected benefits of a UMS include a stronger and more consistent regional identity, reduced overlap in marketing expenditures, clearer communication with industry partners, and better positioning to attract cargoes and investments,” Cormier continued. “Speaking as a unified region enhances visibility and improves industry confidence in the Lower Mississippi as a longterm shipping partner.”

In August 2025, the five ports agreed to retain the services of Polaris Analytics & Consulting to assist in the formation of the Unified Marketing Strategy. From there, port officials and the aforementioned consultants have met regularly to discuss particulars and customize the structure of the plan to fit the region’s maritime commerce specifics and nuances. Once finalized, the UMS will be released publicly.

“The recent shift toward deeper collaboration among the five deep-water draft ports is largely driven by the current global shipping climate,” Cormier said. “Carriers and shippers continue to optimize costs and efficiency, favoring regions that demonstrate cohesion, predictability, and the ability to present unified infrastructure and service offerings. Speaking collectively positions the Lower Mississippi as a more

Joint Port Marketing Initiative

competitive gateway during a period of evolving trade patterns and heightened competition from other domestic and international ports.”

Noting the urgency involved in staying viable in such a quick-moving, rapidly-shifting, and always-evolving global maritime shipping economic ecosystem, the five Lower Mississippi ports have already acted upon principles and/or strategic courses of action that will be a part of the UMS before the ink officially dries on the document – collaborating in real-time to secure keystone industrial projects while still polishing the final details of the UMS.

For instance, in March 2025 Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry formally welcomed and introduced executives from Hyundai Motor Group as they announced plans to invest nearly $6 billon into a steel manufacturing facility in Ascension Parish – within the footprint of the Port of Greater Baton Rouge -- that will be used in the construction of the company’s automobiles that are made in North America.

A secondary, but nonetheless vital, bullet point included in that announcement was that, as part of the Hyundai

project, the Port of South Louisiana would construct and own deep-water dock on the facility’s westbank, hugging the river. Like the Hyundai plant itself, this dock – which will receive approximately 4 million of tons of raw iron ore annually that will be converted into 2.7 million metric tons of steel used to assemble Hyundais, Kias, and a handful of other auto models at U.S. facilities – is technically located within Baton Rouge’s port district. But, given the Port of South Louisiana’s long history of handling dock projects from conception to completion at Globalplex and other sites in its 54-mile, 3-parish footprint, a partnership with the Port of Greater Baton Rouge on this specific aspect of the Hyundai steel facility was formed, which played a role in getting this higheconomic impact, high-quality-job-creator project across the finish line.

“In today’s marketplace, speaking with one voice and leveraging shared strengths is crucial because carriers and shippers increasingly evaluate regions, not individual facilities, when making long-term routing decisions,” Cormier said. “A unified approach signals stability, scalability, and strategic alignment across the Lower Mississippi, which is essential for maintaining and growing Louisiana’s maritime competitiveness.”

RAISING STANDARDS

Associated Terminals christens two hybrid cranes

In January, Associated Terminals gathered with industry leaders and maritime stakeholders at Woldenberg Park in New Orleans to christen two new hybrid Liebherr CBG 500 E cranes: the D. Lopez and the Bill S. However, the ceremony—held on the banks of the Mississippi River— marked more than the addition of equipment. It also represented a commitment to modernization, sustainability and the people who make river commerce possible.

For Dawn Lopez, vice president of marketing and public relations for Associated Terminals and Turn Services, the honor of having a crane bear her name carries profound significance. “This crane represents generations of people who have built and sustained this work on the

river,” she said during the ceremony. “It reflects the leadership, discipline and pride of the teams who plan the work and move cargo safely every day.”

The cranes were named following a longstanding company tradition. At Associated Terminals, cranes are named after individuals whose leadership and longterm commitment reflect the company’s trajectory and culture. For instance, Bill Sullivan, vice president of sales, who joined Associated Terminals in 2001, has been instrumental in expanding the company’s commercial footprint along the Mississippi River. Lopez’s role has focused on brand alignment, communications and elevating awareness of the maritime industry.

“It’s incredibly humbling to have a crane named after me,” Sullivan says. “At Associated Terminals, equipment like this represents far more than steel and machinery. It represents the people, the relationships and the trust we’ve built with customers along the Mississippi River.”

“I was deeply honored when I learned one of the cranes would be named after me,” Lopez says. “To have your name associated with equipment that will operate for decades on one of the nation’s most vital waterways represents trust, continuity and shared commitment.”

In addition to these two new cranes, Associated Terminals operates multiple floating crane barges, including Gottwald cranes that have delivered reliable performance for years, which remain integral to daily operations. The new hybrid-powered

units represent the next evolution, incorporating energy recovery systems, enhanced lift capacity, and modern control technology that builds upon the strength of our existing fleet.

The two CBG 500 E cranes represent a significant technological advancement for cargo operations on the Lower Mississippi River. Mounted on floating crane barges built by LAD Services and assembled at Boh Bros., these units offer high-volume handling capabilities with maximum grab capacities of up to 90 tons for cargo like fertilizers, ores/ minerals and other industrial commodities. The larger grab increases tons per cycle, accelerating loading and discharge rates, and reducing vessel turnaround times.

The cranes feature LiCAtronic energy recovery systems, which is described as intelligent energy management. With this system, energy is generated when a load is lowered whereas in traditional systems, much of that energy dissipates as heat. The LiCAtronic system captures and reuses that energy within the crane’s power cycle, which results in improved efficiency, smoother lift cycles, and reduced wasted energy thereby enhancing performance and sustainability simultaneously.

The floating nature of the crane barges provides operational advantages that fixed installations cannot match. Floating crane barges allow vessels to be serviced directly on the river, increasing overall system capacity and reducing congestion at fixed docks. That flexibility supports more efficient cargo transfers and scheduling. They can also reposition dockside as demand shifts. On a dynamic river system, mobility provides responsiveness, an advantage that fixed infrastructure cannot offer.

The christening celebration drew praise from Julia Fisher-Cormier, executive director of the Por t of South Louisiana. “Associated Terminals has been a valued tenant and trusted operating partner at our Globalplex facility, and their continued investment is a testament to the strength of our partnership and the Port of South Louisiana’s role as a premier gateway for global commerce,” she says. “The work their team does

every day handling diverse cargoes efficiently, safely and reliably directly supports our region’s industrial base and keeps vital supply chains moving.” The cranes will be in operation throughout the Port of South Louisiana jurisdiction.

The Port of South Louisiana’s support for Associated Terminals’ expansion reflects more than an appreciation for the company’s important work but also a broader strategic priority. “At the Port of South Louisiana, tenant retention and expansion are central to our mission,” Fisher-Cormier says. “Supporting existing partners as they grow, modernize and compete globally is just as important as attracting new tenants who see the value of investing here.”

For Fisher-Cormier, the new cranes exemplify what can be achieved through collaboration. “We were proud to celebrate the christening of Associated Terminals’ new highcapacity cranes,” she said. “These state-of-the-art assets significantly enhance operational capability and reflect a shared commitment to growth, innovation and long-term success along the Lower Mississippi River.”

Following the ceremony, Todd Fuller emphasized the company’s long-term investment philosophy. “Investments like these cranes reflect a long-term commitment to the river and to the people who work on it every day,” Fuller says. “Associated Terminals has always believed that disciplined reinvestment in equipment, infrastructure and teams is what allows us to operate safely, grow responsibly and continue supporting global trade along the Mississippi River.”

Associated Terminals’ decision to name equipment after employees rather than external stakeholders speaks to the company’s values.

Associated Terminals was built by individuals who committed their careers to steady growth and operational excellence. Naming cranes after team members reinforces long-term contribution and leadership.

Customer relationships are built on the expertise of long-tenured teams, Associated Terminals emphasizes. Clients recognize stability when they see it and stability comes from experienced teams who understand the river, the cargo and the equipment. Equipment drives productivity. People drive performance. Cranes do not move cargo on their own. People do.

This philosophy extends throughout the organization. Much credit is given to leaders within the organization like Todd Fuller, Gary Poirrier, Kevin Tarleton and Zeljko Franks, who established a disciplined foundation for longterm reinvestment and growth. Also recognized is Curtis Blank, director of maintenance and engineering, and Ethan Palma, mechanical design and solutions engineer, who led the technical integration of the new cranes.

Nonetheless, the enduring strength of the maritime industry lies in the stevedores, crane operators, mechanics, terminal crews, captains and boat crews who

move cargo every day. Together, they sustain global trade and carry forward institutional knowledge that defines safe, efficient operations along the river.

This investment by Associated Terminals represents a successful collaborative approach between public infrastructure and private enterprise. “Associated Terminals’ continued expansion underscores what is possible when public infrastructure, private investment and a collaborative mindset come together,” FisherCormier says. “We look forward to building on this momentum as we continue strengthening Globalplex and welcoming new opportunities to the port.”

The D. Lopez and the Bill S. represent more than technological advancement. They also stand as a testament to the generations of workers who have built and will continue to sustain commerce on America’s working waterfront. The Mississippi River remains one of North America’s most critical transportation corridors. These cranes represent modernization, but, more importantly, they represent the people within Associated Terminals whose expertise and commitment ensure trade continues to move reliably and safely for decades to come.

RISING TO NEW HEIGHTS

After a landmark Super Bowl season brought unprecedented activity, the Port of South Louisiana Airport is building on that momentum with major infrastructure projects and a renewed focus on service.

After not only making it through, but thriving during, a major moment like the Super Bowl, the Port of South Louisiana Airport is carrying those lessons forward to new heights. The airport is expanding not just its physical footprint, but its approach to service, rolling out the red carpet as it prepares to welcome increased activity and long-term growth.

More than a year and a half into his role as Airport Director, Chanse Watson is leading an ambitious expansion that will reshape the region’s gateway for private and general aviation.

“Right now, the airport is in a significant yet exciting growth stage,” Watson said. “We’re currently constructing the largest hangar on the field to date - an 8,400-square-foot hangar while wrapping up a design for a new terminal building and apron that will increase our capacity and bring an enhanced level of services and amenities to our customers. We also have future plans for obstruction (tree) removal and runway extension, among other projects.”

The airport’s growth follows a rise in recognition earlier in 2025 during the Super Bowl, which brought an unprecedented peak in operations. For Watson, the event served as both a test and a turning point.

“That really put us on the map,” he said. “It allowed us to be recognized as a potential destination or an alternative airport option located between New Orleans and Baton Rouge and as a convenient option outside of the busy airspace."

Successfully navigating the surge in traffic and operational demands during the Super Bowl set the stage for what comes next. The experience reinforced the airport’s ability to manage growth while maintaining efficiency, safety, and service—critical as the airport prepares for a major transition.

While the Super Bowl marked a milestone, Watson and his team are focused on a long-term trajectory. The airport is currently finalizing the designs for a new terminal, part of an approximately $7.5 million investment with funding requested with the Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Transportation and Development, and committed funds by the Port of South Louisiana Board of Commissioners. Once complete, the terminal, along with the new hangar, will significantly enhance the airport’s service offerings and operational capacity.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2028, with the goal of providing a more seamless, full service experience.

“The new terminal is really going to be a game changer,” Watson said. “Not just for the airport, but for the port and the region. It’s about the level of service and amenities we’re able to provide.”

Despite the changes to come, Watson emphasized that customer service remains at the core of the airport’s mission. As facilities expand and operations evolve, accessibility, communication, and stakeholder involvement remain top priorities.

"Exceptional customer service is what is expected of us and what we strive to provide each and every day,” Watson said. "It's primary to anything that we do, with safety being the number one priority."

That commitment extends to the airport’s existing base of general aviation customers, who Watson says will remain central as new services are introduced.

“Stakeholder involvement is very critical,” he added. “We have a very good foundation of general aviation customers here. As we improve services and add new amenities, we’re always going to remember where we came from.

I want to make sure that we’re all growing together.”

Watson also credits much of the airport’s success to the team behind the scenes, whose work ensures operations run safely and smoothly every day.

“The most valuable asset that we have is our team,” he said. “Anything we do is going to be successful because of them.”

From working weekends to responding after hours, Watson noted that staff are constantly monitoring runways and taxiways, prioritizing safety at every step. “Everything we do is centered through the lens of safety,” he said.

As the airport continues along its growth path, Watson says the focus now is on careful planning and making sure the airport delivers on what it promises.

“We are on a growth trend,” he said. “The next step is fine-tuning that path and making sure we meet or exceed the expectations of the flying public. It’s really exciting times, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”
