WELCOME Hello and welcome to our celebration of the Class of 2021. This is a very special day, as we pause to reflect on what our graduates have achieved during their time with us here at the University of Sunderland. Our students have come to the end of their demanding academic journey; one which has involved them completing their studies in the midst of a global pandemic. For that alone, they deserve enormous credit. In addition, family and friends can celebrate the achievements of their loved ones today. Rightly, it is a very proud day for everyone who has supported our soon-to-be graduates as they have progressed through the University. For our staff, this is the culmination of all their efforts. They will look on with great satisfaction as hard work is rewarded and recognised. Coming to university is a major commitment. Yet, it is an investment worth making, as those who have gone before can testify, not least because the University of Sunderland equips its students with the knowledge, skills and experience that will prepare

them better for both life and work. Of course, being at university will have expanded horizons and afforded our students the opportunity to make new friends, including those who will be there for the long term. I hope too that the University of Sunderland will be a ‘friend for life’ and that our newest graduates will keep in touch with us. To our Class of 2021, congratulations on reaching this important milestone in your life. You now join the 160,000 other University of Sunderland graduates who make up our global alumni network. Please do join the Alumni Association and keep in touch. Each and every one of you has both the capacity and capability to make your part of the world a better place. EMELI SANDÉ MBE Hello Class of 2021! As your Chancellor, I am humbled and honoured to be able to congratulate you on your achievements and to share this day of celebration with you. Although I am sure the last few months have been challenging for you all, through your tenacity and hard work, you have achieved so much. Take a moment to remind yourself how far you have come. Take pride in that, you’re amazing! As you reflect on what you have achieved, I hope that you feel inspired to set yourself new goals and aspirations as you move into the next phase of your life after university. I hope that what you have learned prepares you for whatever the next verse in the song of your life has in store. Yes, you will have gained academic knowledge that will prepare you for a fulfilling career. But I hope too that you learned

about yourself, through your experience and from the friendships you made at the University of Sunderland. Hold this in your heart. Our ethos here at the University is one of inclusivity and enabling students from all backgrounds to access education and reach their potential. We want to have a positive impact on society, to be life-changing for our students and for you to go on an be a positive force for change. I feel certain that you, our extraordinary Class of 2021 will go on to do this and more. I end with just a final word to you – our Class of 2021. OUR HISTORY

We are proud to be the life-changing University of Sunderland and of our positive impact on the prosperity and wellbeing of the city and wider north east region.

Our career-focused and professions-facing curriculum means that students graduate with the relevant knowledge and skills employers need. Areas of strength include a wide range of health disciplines – medicine, pharmacy and nursing to name a few – engineering, computer science, technology, education, business, and arts and the creative industries. We have extensive partnership arrangements with many organisations across manufacturing, business and the public and voluntary services. We work closely with the NHS, making a vital contribution to improved patient care in the city, and we were a founding partner of the nationally-recognised Sunderland Culture organisation. Proud of our role in promoting social change and widening participation in higher education for all with talent, the University’s work is passionately supported by our Chancellor, and Sunderland-born musician, Emeli Sandé. Our modern roots lie with Sunderland Technical College, which opened in 1901 to develop high-quality vocational programmes to support the regional skills needed for the 20th Century. Pharmacy, a flagship area for the University, celebrates its centenary this year with their first students registering in 1921. In 1969 The Technical College, The School of Art,

and Sunderland Teacher Training College were brought together and became Sunderland Polytechnic. In 1992 the Polytechnic was awarded university status and we became the University of Sunderland. Over the last three decades the University has continued to innovate, creating our riverside campus focused on computing, the media and teaching, and extending our reach across the globe, with campuses in London and Hong Kong as well as Sunderland. Today, the University of Sunderland sits at the heart of our city and continues to focus on adaptability, agility and innovation.

ARMORIAL BEARING The Armorial Bearing, which appears on your degree certificate, reflects the history of your University and the City of Sunderland. THE CREST

THE SUPPORTERS

The ship reflects Sunderland’s historic connection with the sea and coal.

The griffin ‘looks wisely into all aspects of future development.’ The Lion references the lions in Durham’s Coat of Arms.

THE ARMS The keys represent those to the former Monkwearmouth monastery, now St Peter’s church. Overlooking our Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s the Anglo Saxon church was once home to the Venerable Bede. The sun symbolises the light of learning.

THE BADGE Echoes the sun in splendour and the griffin.

THE MOTTO SCIENTIAM DULCE HAURIENS: ‘sweetly absorbing knowledge’ is taken from the Venerable Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People.

OUR RESEARCH As a graduate you will have experienced how our research delivers outstanding student experience, bringing the work of our most innovative academics into the classroom, lab and lecture theatre. Research inspires and drives our academic community and plays an influential supporting role in developing economies and societies regionally, nationally and globally. As detailed in the University’s Research and Innovation Strategy, our research institutes are closely aligned to our academic departments. These institutes lead faculty research, ensuring it is relevant and informs our curriculum. Each

Institute brings together a number of research themes, encouraging multidisciplinary collaborations as well as innovation around the boundaries of specific subjects. We have a strong focus on applied research that impacts on and responds to the needs of real-life issues in the economy, in culture and society. Our research stands out because it is relevant and responsive, as well as inclusive and collaborative.

HOW THE UNIVERSITY OF SUNDERLAND HAS RESPONDED TO THE PANDEMIC A crisis can bring out the best in people and that is certainly what we have witnessed here in the UK and across the University of Sunderland community. We are particularly proud of our own graduate nurses who went straight to work in regional hospitals. There is pride too in the paramedics and pharmacists who studied at the University of Sunderland, caring for patients on the front line. Nor do we forget our graduate teachers, engineers, software developers, illustrators and psychologists – to name but a few – who have all continued to offer their own expertise and support during the pandemic. Some of our current student nurses are now volunteering in hospitals. Our engineers at AMAP developed a visor to keep NHS staff safe while treating patients and designed a simple but effective door opening device. They went on to produce their device in large quantities, so people working in all kinds of

care settings and key businesses could reduce their potential contact with the virus. Our student support and wellbeing teams have been offering advice and giving guidance and support to students with all kinds of queries, as well as listening and being a friend to students who needed someone to talk to. And, our academic staff swiftly developed modules and materials for online teaching and assessment. Their efforts have ensured students could continue in their studies, without detriment and that our graduates could complete their studies confident in the knowledge that they had been assessed with the same level of rigour as they would have expected in normal circumstances.

Thesis title: An analysis of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) practices and the firm performance: the case of the Jordanian financial sector.

Thesis title: The curation and display of interactive new media art: making a manual.

Director of studies: Dr Hamid Sediqui A detailed examination of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) system and its effectiveness as an organisation’s risk management system in practice. He develops a theoretical framework for better understanding of the ERM system and applies this framework to the Jordanian financial sector to empirically examine its effectiveness and impact on the organisation’s performance. In this respect his work in risk management is new and contributes to the academic literature as well as practice in this key research area. Dr Aldoush’s research work is innovative and up-to-date and has significantly contributed to our better understanding of the nature of risks and its management via ERM system in emerging financial markets.

Wjoud Almadani Thesis title: How Hijazi men and women say “NO”: a pragmatic and discourse analysis study of the speech act of refusal, gender and culture in Saudi Arabia. Director of studies: Professor Angela Smith Wjoud Almadani’s research explores the differences between refusals in male and female interactants, from Black Saudi and Arab Saudi backgrounds. Using discourse completion tests and selected interviews, she explores how gender and culture may influence how her participants respond to requests when refusal is the outcome. Her findings show that gender is a more relevant factor, with little difference in the strategies used by those across the Black or Arab Saudi communities. The historical conventions of the Black Saudi culture would appear to have been ameliorated, with the strategies of the dominant Arab Saudi community prevailing.

Abdul Mannan Baig Thesis title: Identification of chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of Acanthamoeba infections: rationale for repurposing drugs via the discovery of novel cellular targets.

Director of studies: Professor Beryl Graham Rene Garcia Cepeda’s PhD aims to improve the ways in which art organisations display art including video games, and interactive video installations. Interviews and case studies of FACT in Liverpool, and Laboratorio Arte Alameda in Mexico were used to collect a variety of perspectives. Rene is a curator and educator based in Mexico, and has lectured at George Washington University, Utah Valley University, and has appeared on the Unfinished List radio streams, a project by Shu Lea Cheang for Ars Electronica. He has published in The Journal of Media Arts, and Design, Art and Technology Journal.

Christopher Chapman Thesis title: Transuranic element discovery: historical and philosophical perspectives. Director of studies: Dr Peter Hayes The PhD by published works includes the book Superheavy: Making and Breaking the Periodic Table, 2019, London: Bloomsbury, and pieces published in five journals including Nature. The synthesis of elements was one of the most significant events in the modern history of chemistry and physics. In addition to expanding the periodic table, it resulted in the advent of the atomic age. Dr Chapman’s analysis combines a scientific account of element synthesis with historical and sociological insights gained from interviews with key scientists and a discussion of the implications for the philosophy of science.

Ian Corrie Thesis title: Facilitating of epistemic knowledge construction: transformational change perspectives and the facilitation of meaning making. Director of studies: Professor Catherine Hayes

Acanthamoeba castellanii is a parasite that causes a range of rare but significant diseases; Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) being the most common. Research into the control of Acanthamoeba is not a focus for industry thus we currently have only two or three drugs that can be used for treatment. The work in the thesis covers a body of research showing the amoebicidal activity of a diverse range of FDA-approved drugs suggesting that these have the potential to be repurposed for the treatment of Acanthamoeba infections. These studies have further revealed a wealth of novel data on novel drug targets in this parasite.

Ian Corrie undertook a study of the impact of a transformative learning and coaching model across four independent work-based practice settings, using an Action Research methodology namely, Executive Coaching and Mentoring in Industry, Heavy Engineering, the National Health Service, and the tri-partite UK Military Medical Services. The overall findings of the study revealed the developmental process of existing transformative frameworks operational across the four identified settings and highlighted the relevance of situation and context to the application of knowledge in work-based practice. Since completing his doctorate, he has published nationally and internationally in the field of transformative learning as well as being made an Honorary Colonel of 355 Medical Evacuation Regiment in recognition of his contribution to professional practice within army medical services, during the course of his studies.

Thesis title: Stability studies of medicines in Monitored Dosage Systems.

Thesis title: An investigation into the constraints limiting maintenance strategy effectiveness in the automotive supply chain.

Director of studies: Dr John Lough Poor patient compliance is a drug safety risk, particularly amongst elderly patients. In this context, monitored dosage systems (MDS) for drug storage have found widespread use. However, there is little guidance on MDS use and little known about the stability and safety of medicines when repackaged into MDS. Accordingly, pharmacist interviews were used to explore these issues and to identify drugs for which a problem was suspected. This subsequently led to quantitative work on the stability of carbamazepine, amlodipine, tramadol and lansoprazole products under MDS storage conditions. During this exercise, rapid, facile supporting analytical methodology was developed. So, the way is now clear for further such studies to lead to a centralized evidence repository to inform the development of clear, harmonised guidelines for MDS-prescribing.

Director of studies: Dr Ken Robson Derek’s research investigated maintenance strategy effectiveness in companies within the North East automotive supply chain. His findings demonstrated that the majority of research participants operated with an underperforming maintenance department due to a several barriers and constraints. These amounted to a lack of leadership, workforce engagement, performance measurement, skills and generally a negative perception of maintenance within the business. The novel contribution of Derek’s work consisted of a new Gap Analysis Tool which not only measured the status of a maintenance strategy but also identified the artefacts which signalled the values and working practices which were negatively affecting senior managers perception of maintenance. The output from the tool provided the necessary data for practitioners to follow so that the maintenance performance could be improved, not only in terms of numbers but also in terms of perception and cultural change.

Craig’s work centred on the development of an audit tool which could be used to identify and prioritise the different data sets required to develop an asset management strategy for manufacturing companies while ignoring the noise attributed to unnecessary data. The audit tool was developed by analysing large sets of maintenance data from subsea, food and drink and automotive tier one companies. The audit tool was trialled and the results identified a decrease in data collection, because only the required data was captured, a decrease in time to analyse the data and an increase in equipment availability due to an improved asset management strategy.

Airborne particulates, such as “smog” has long since been of concern as a danger to public health. Nigeria has concentrations which are far higher than the developed world. Control of the sources of these particulates is only possible with widespread atmospheric monitoring. Monitoring systems used in the developed world, with requirements of constant power and specific laboratory support, are not suitable in Nigeria. Diran’s work developed alternative methods to provide the same data which could be widely used within Nigeria, especially in rural areas. Implementation of this research can be used to highlight and control atmospheric particulate matter within the country.

Riikka Haapasaari Thesis title: The symbiotic relationship between glassmaking and filmmaking in creative practice Director of studies: Dr Carol MacKay Riikka Haapasaari’s practice-based research explored the relationship between glassmaking and filmmaking and presented glass-informed filmmaking as an integration of these two disciplines. Research involved the development of an experimental feature film Light Keeper that utilizes the glass-informed approach along with the articulation of a new framework for glass-informed filmmaking in a written thesis. The film and the thesis together describe moving image projects that incorporate these two disciplines in a symbiotic way. This research resulted in a major new creative output contribution to the practice of glass-informed filmmaking and established a foundation for further research in this emerging cross-disciplinary field.

Sohail Sarwar Thesis title: Applying personalisation to enable e-government service delivery for citizens Director of studies: Professor Lynne Hall

Sohail Sarwar researched into improving the user experience of e-government using Durham City Council as a case study. Data analytics, focus group and interviews were used to explore citizens’ experiences and perceptions, with the development of an innovative task-based user segmentation design approach relating personalisation to task fulfilment with user segments represented as personas. E-government specific personalised heuristics were identified, developed and applied, providing a novel approach for the design and evaluation of e-government services. A design method, PeGS (Personalisation of eGovernment Services), was created and validated for developers enabling the delivery of personalised e-government services according to citizen needs and expectations. This significant contribution focuses attention on users as well as algorithmic approaches to personalising services for e-citizens.

Thesis title: The relationship between AMBRA1, autophagy and cell proliferation in melanoma.

Dian Shi

Director of studies: Dr Noel Carter Milad’s PhD focussed on a protein named AMBRA1 linked to several cancers. Milad used experimental techniques to identify novel roles for this protein. His work showed that if human cells have too little of the protein cells they grow slowly, and this activates several genes that encode proteins that are hallmarks of cancer. His work also allowed him to identify proteins interact with AMBRA1, most of which seem to be involved trafficking other proteins to the right place inside cells. This demonstrated that AMBRA1 potentially has a several previously unknown functions that may play a significant role in cancer.

Adam McDade Thesis title: Beyond the epidermis Director of studies: Professor Mike Collier ‘Beyond the Epidermis’ was conducted in partnership with Sunderland-based tattoo studio, Triplesix Studios, by a resident tattooist. It is the first doctoral research to exist that utilises tattooing practice as a core methodological approach, and uniquely focusses on contemporary western tattooing practice and producer. It was described by examiners as “the most in-depth, detailed and considered first-person account of tattoo practice in the academic literature” and presents novel frameworks and documentation for understanding tattoo production, the multifaceted role of the tattooist, and the tattooist’s stylistic development. The research contributes to remedying the absences and flaws in existing academic treatment of tattooing and introduces the discipline into broader arts and design scholarship.

Thesis title: Chinese calligraphy is life! The application and development of Chinese calligraphy for glass artworks using metal oxides Director of studies: Professor Kevin Petrie This art-based research focused on applying metal oxides in glass art to create ‘Chinese glass calligraphy’. The research emerged from the practice of a glass artist inspired by the shades of ink in Chinese. Chinese ink on paper can create different shades - dark to light. Similarly, percentages of metal oxides can dictate tone and colour in glass. Five series of artworks were made which developed and demonstrated glass calligraphy. All the works provide different perspectives on the researcher’s idea that ‘Chinese calligraphy is life’. This relates to the Chinese word ‘Qi (气)’ which reflects the calligrapher’s spirit and energy.

Simeon Soden Thesis title: PayPal for punks: Blockchain for DIY music Director of studies: Professor Beryl Graham Simeon Soden’s PhD investigated how music organisations and DIY practitioners may use Blockchain to distribute, compose, present and perform music. He was awarded a National Productivity Investment Fund and AHRC-funded studentship in a national competition, in collaboration with Sage Gateshead. Sim is an electronic musician who has performed on BBC introducing, Evolution Emerging and NARC Fest. He is a founder of Kaneda Records, Northern Electric Festival. Through his research he has been consulted by organisations including The Grammies (the Recording Academy, USA), and Agency for Open Culture and Critical Transformation/Openculture.agency (Berlin,Germany).

Agon Sopa’s thesis adopts mixed methodology comprising of questionnaires and interviews. SPSS and NVivo analysis of the data collected reveal significant variances in the levels of criticality of industry factors, and uniqueness of product offerings for sustaining competitive advantage. These findings led to the development of a holistic framework which contributes to better understanding of the retail internationalisation process and how it impacts the corporate profitability of food retailers in Kosovo and south-eastern Europe. Agon is an active Member of the British Academy of Management.

Dishi Xu’s thesis provides a detailed theoretical and empirical analysis of key factors affecting innovation activities in auto manufacturing industry of Jinan city, a key industrial city of China. Within this framework, her thesis significantly contributes to our better understanding of innovation and its key determinants in an important and a typical industrial region/city of China. In her thesis Dishi Xu has been able to identify and develop a framework of industrial innovation in China. This framework has been applied to and derived from a typical manufacturing city and a key industry therein. This framework might be used in practice to enhance innovation and growth at a company level as well as at national level. In this regard, her work also makes a significant contribution to our better understanding of innovation activities and their key determinants in manufacturing industry of China.

Guy Tucker Thesis title: Gifting memory palaces: factors which support the retrieval of clinical information using mnemonics Director of studies: Dr John Unsworth This study explored the factors associated with the retrieval of clinical information and mnemonic devices among student nurses. A mixed methods sequential design was used to gather data from a sample of 47 undergraduate student nurses on their Master of Nursing programme. This study found that many students valued mnemonics as active learning tools and strategies to develop their future learning and practice. Thus, gifting students with a learning tool/mnemonic device which can be used not only to pass summative examinations but to save lives, by maximising accurate and timely recall of vital clinical information in clinical settings.

Sophia White Master of Philosophy Thesis title: An investigation into the value of informal and experiential learning with Syrian refugees in the ESOL context. Director of studies: Professor Trish Spedding As an experienced teacher of ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) Sophia is passionate about social purpose education and the ways in which informal learning can help Syrian refugees develop their written and spoken English. Her research explores how ESOL can be taught through informal, naturalistic and experiential methods. Key to the success of her study is the use of Narrative Inquiry which brings to life the rich stories of a group of learners as they cope with the challenges of life and learning in a new country after fleeing their homeland. Sophia’s work points to new ways to support ESOL learners which are used to improve language acquisition that encourages improved integration into the host society.

Maggie Wright Thesis title: From Good to Outstanding: authentic leader behaviours and the quality of school self-evaluation on the UAE Director of studies: Professor Alastair Irons Maggie’s research examined authentic leadership behaviours in the context of school self-evaluation and improvement planning and annual school inspections in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Her thesis explored how the school leaders’ identity, role and self-awareness influenced the quality of school self-evaluation and improvement planning in the context of authentic leadership theory and practice. The findings from Maggie’s research suggested that good schools aiming to achieve an outstanding judgement benefited from adopting authentic leader behaviours and that outstanding performance was driven by leaders who focus on their people, expectations and their accountabilities through relational transparency and by delivering on quality assurance processes through balanced processing. Maggie concluded that providing strategic guidance for developing authentic school leaders and leadership team behaviours that enabled authentic leaders to accelerate school improvement in highly regulated environments.
