We began Coquet Cottages 21 years ago with just little one cottage in the quaint village of Warkworth, named after the beautiful river that winds around the village. With Mark, we bought Lane End Cottage as an investment and worked our magic to create a romantic and luxurious retreat for two, plus a canine companion. We’ve always been big believers that you shouldn’t have to compromise on quality just because you have your much-loved pooch with you.
It’s an infectiously joyous business to be in; helping to make holidays perfect and making people happy in the process. Holidays are so precious and there’s no price tag attached to a lifelong memory. That’s why a few years later our daughter, Stephanie, and a little later on our son, Miles, both caught the bug and joined us on our Coquet Cottages journey, making it a family business. JULIE ON FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE NORTHUMBERLAND COAST, SETTING UP HOME IN WARKWORTH AND RESCUING BEAUTIFUL, COUNTRY COTTAGES TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
Born in Rothbury but raised in Durham, I have always had strong family ties with Northumberland and spent a lot of my childhood exploring the beautiful coast and countryside. When my father moved to Warkworth in the 70s, I got to know the village well from weekly visits, and when a little cottage called Lane End Cottage came up for sale in 1998, it seemed the perfect investment – and so our business began. Warkworth was always a place I aspired to settle, and finally in 2013 we bought a beautiful home in the village so we’re now closer to the heart of our business too. We live and breathe our business and it’s an extension of our family. We’re lucky to have Warkworth beach just 10 minutes’ walk from our front door, where we all – including our Great Dane, Gracie - love the five mile stretch of golden sand.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO BUY YOUR FIRST PROPERTY, LANE END COTTAGE, BACK IN 1998?
As my father became elderly and we were visiting Warkworth to support him every other day from my home in Durham, I spotted little Lane End Cottage for sale a few doors down from him. Already a holiday cottage, it seemed a great investment and an easy route into holiday letting. As a dog-lover I noticed a gap in the market for luxury properties that welcomed dogs. It was an eternal frustration of ours as a family that we couldn’t seem to find

high-standard cottages where we could take our dog without having to compromise on the quality. So I furnished Lane End Cottage to ‘5 Star Gold Award’ standard with plans to warmly welcome well-behaved dogs, and this became our standard as we expanded our portfolio. We do however also have properties that are dog-free!
ALL OF YOUR PROPERTIES ARE IN THE PRETTY VILLAGE OF WARKWORTH. WHAT DO YOU LOVE SO MUCH ABOUT THE VILLAGE? Warkworth certainly isn’t the only pretty village in Northumberland, but it ticks all the boxes for the perfect holiday destination as well as being a great place to live. From the historic castle sitting proudly on a hill in the heart of the village, to beautiful St. Lawrence’s Church on the winding riverbank below. The shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants in between are interesting and welcoming to

all - open all year and are frequented by friendly locals and visitors alike. Warkworth feels like a postcard-perfect village in the countryside, with plenty of wildlife to watch around the river that winds through it. Just a short walk along a pretty lane takes you to the magnificent sandy beach with dramatic dunes, spanning five miles, and a view of Amble harbour to the south and Alnmouth and Boulmer to the north. You could spend a whole weekend in Warkworth without having to use the car, there’s something different around every corner, so the exploring opportunities are endless.
Honeybee Cottage
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COTTAGE?
For many years my favourite cottage was Sunny Cottage. I loved the transformation of it from being dowdy and rundown, to becoming a luxurious village cottage retaining all its original features. In 2018, however, we purchased another little run-down cottage on the riverbank next door to our Coquet View. The process of turning this sad and neglected holiday cottage into the Honeybee Cottage it is today was long but interesting, as we wanted to redesign the property to bring it into the 21st century, yet still retain a classic feel to the décor. By extending the kitchen to create a light and airy openplan space, it has really transformed this once gloomy and uninspiring property to a luxurious retreat - and our favourite property of all. The interior is as stylish as a five-

Coquet Island Lying a mile off the coast at Amble is Coquet Island - a must-see attraction for birdwatchers and wildlife-lovers. The tiny island is a Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)-managed nature reserve and every spring and summer over 35,000 nesting sea birds call it home. It’s also a safe haven for seals and colourful, comical puffins,

who return in their thousands to breed during the warmer months. While you can’t land on the island (only RSPB wardens are permitted), you can get tantalisingly close on a boat trip around its rocky shoreline. selling arty crafts, gifts, jewellery and accessories, food and drink and more. All of them are run by local, independent businesses, so if you love ‘shopping local’, then this is the perfect place for you. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne Arguably one of Northumberland’s most popular - and most breathtaking - attractions, The Holy Island of Lindisfarne really is a sight to behold for historians and ramblers alike. It’s cut off from the rest of the world twice a day by fast, incoming tides, but time it right and you can reach it in moments by crossing the causeway. Once there, you’re free to explore everything the heritage-rich island has to offer, including a beautiful
harbour, cosy pubs and inns and shops, walking, fishing, rockpooling, golfing and more. Don’t leave without paying Lindisfarne Castle a visit. Owned by National Trust, the small fortress has been around since the 16th century. Take in the jaw-dropping views of the Northumberland coast and explore the nearby rocky remains of Lindisfarne Priory. Holy Island
St Aidan’s Dunes You’ll find this breathtaking beach just north of the village of Seahouses. Arguably one of the most picturesque stretches of sand you’re likely to find along the Northumberland coast, an afternoon spent walking here on a summer’s day is nothing short of bliss. Stroll along the golden bay until you reach the dunes, which are covered in wildflowers in spring and summer and herb-rich grassland grazed on by Exmoor ponies - during the colder months. A perfect spot for family picnics.

Home to more than 30 miles of beautiful beaches, there’s plenty to discover, whether you’re a water sport-lover, keen walker or birdwatcher…
BAMBURGH BEACH
Whether you’re strolling in the summer heat or in the depths of winter, you can’t deny Bamburgh beach’s beauty. You’ll find this dramatic stretch of golden sand at the foot of Bamburgh’s majestic castle, fringed by dunes and hugged by sparkling shore. Voted one of the North East’s top spots for big, consistent waves, it’s a popular hangout among surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers, but its vastness - 16 or so miles - also makes it a great place for horse riding, dog-walking and volleyball-ing. It’s dramatic beauty makes it popular with the makers of blockbuster films too. Take a surfing lesson, go rock pooling around England’s most northerly land-based lighthouse, enjoy the views of the Farne Islands and Holy Island or have a picnic under the famous Stag Rocks cliffs - it’s a real sun trap on a hot day.

This serene seven-mile sweep of sand, running from Amble in the north and Cresswell in the south, is regarded as one of the North East’s most beautiful beaches - and it’s easy to see why. They say good things come in small packages - and this certainly rings true when it comes to Budle Bay. The one-mile-wide bay is at its most beautiful during the summer months, when the sea turns turquoise under the sun and the warm white sand calls for barefoot strolls and picnics. Wading about in the shallow waters feels wonderful, as does windsurfing, jet skiing and kitesurfing on a hot, blustery day. Part of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, Budle Bay is also a great place to be if you’re a keen birdwatcher.

SCOTT’S DELI CRASTER KIPPER PÂTÉ INGREDIENTS
• 400g Craster kipper fillets or replace using mackerel fillets • 150g cream cheese • 50g crème fraîche • 2 lemons, zest and juice • Dill fronds picked from 4 stems, reserve one frond for decoration • Tbsp of fresh grated horseradish or the equivalent of horseradish cream • Slices of great quality sourdough bread

Recipe • Half a cucumber, cut into ribbons • Tsp of cider vinegar • Garden salad (salad leaves, cherry tomato, sliced cucumber, pomegranate, grapes, vinaigrette) • Knob of salted butter
METHOD
Peel the skin off the kipper fillets, discarding any obvious bones. Put the fish in a food processor. Add the cream cheese, crème fraîche, zest, juice, dill and horseradish. Blitz for three minutes until you have a smooth
texture. Season to taste. Combine the peeled cucumber ribbons with the vinegar and marinate for one minute, turning after 30 seconds. Serve in a small bowl. Toast the sourdough bread. The pâté is best served at just room temperature. Combine all elements together, pate, salad, toast, pickled cucumber and butter. Enjoy. No time to make it yourself? After being an Art Educator for nearly 40 years, I have just started a new and very exciting venture. We have converted a barn that hadn’t been used for the last 40 years into luxury holiday accommodation, an art studio and a fantastic workshop space for me to continue my practice as an artist and allow others to create. The journey began on paper in the summer of 2017 and the vision started to become real when the builders arrived on site in October 2018. There were several ‘hiccups’ along
the way; roof collapsing at one end, rotten beams and the push to make the building water-tight before the worst of the winter weather. But, eventually, the vision has become a reality. ‘Grey Hens’ offers far more than just a place to stay and encompasses all the things I love; creating a welcoming home, my artwork, allowing others to create and my garden! My own artwork involves a mixture of printmaking, textiles and mixed media. The walls of both the barn and studio display my own work or that of local artists in Northumberland. Much of it is for sale, along with cards and prints. The garden is at the heart of our venture and works around themed outdoor rooms; each of these areas has a unique feature, whether it’s a fire pit, a pond or a planting scheme. This is also my second year of growing for weddings and

special occasions in the compact walled vegetable garden that is now filled with cutting flowers. I supply a florist in Newcastle, the local deli in Rothbury and wedding flowers for brides.
WHY DID YOU NAME THE COTTAGE GREY HENS?
During the early part of the 19th century, smuggling was carried out in Upper Coquetdale. Scotch whisky was conveyed on horseback in kegs, called ‘grey hens’ over the Cheviot Hills and gin was brought from Boulmer on the coast. According to local histories of the area, the farmer at Bushygap Farm kept swift horses for this purpose. The farmhouse was described as having a double gable and in the space between the walls gin and whisky was concealed in these ‘grey hens’. Eventually, the secret chamber containing a large quantity of gin was discovered and the smuggler-farmer was brought to justice and heavily fined!

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE BEAUTIFUL GARDENS?
We have invested 20 years in creating what you see today. The acre of garden is divided into rooms, which have different feels dictated by the coloured herbaceous planting. The vibrant hot border is at its best in late summer with Crocosmia Lucifer, bronze Fennel and the sculptural yellow Ligularia ‘Rocket’. In contrast, the Box hedged beds in the pale area house lavender, old-fashioned David Austin roses and architectural Alliums delight in late spring. The walled ‘flower patch’ not only provides an abundance of cutting flowers, but is bordered by soft fruit from which I make my jams, preserves, liqueurs and gin. The garden is at its very best, with an abundance of tulips, narcissi and alliums, in the late spring and early summer. There is nothing better than sitting by the pond in the early evening to watch the swallows perform their acrobatic show!
