SPRING IS ON THE MOVE Buyer activity continues to build across the group, reflected in strong attendance at our open inspections and healthy competition at auction. Gra Pao Fried Eggplant from Bar Spontana

Bold, fragrant and full of flavour, this Gra Pao Fried Eggplant from Bar Spontana showcases chef Ploy’s contemporary take on a beloved Thai classic. Crispy eggplant is tossed through a rich, aromatic gra pao sauce infused with holy basil, garlic and chilli, creating a vibrant vegan dish that’s perfect for sharing.
INGREDIENTS
METHOD
For the Gra Pao Sauce 10 holy basil leaves 10g garlic 10g red chilli 5g vegetable oil 50g mushroom sauce 60g ABC sweet soy sauce 20g soy sauce 10g water
1.
Blend the holy basil, garlic, chilli, vegetable oil and water until fairly smooth.
2.
Transfer the mixture to a pan and cook over medium heat for 3–4 minutes, stirring regularly until fragrant.
3.
Add the mushroom sauce, ABC sweet soy sauce and soy sauce.
4.
Simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce is well combined and slightly thickened. Set aside.
5.
Cut the eggplant into your preferred size.
6.
Lightly coat the eggplant with tapioca flour, shaking off any excess.
7.
Deep-fry at 175–180°C until golden and crispy, then drain well.
8.
Toss the fried eggplant with the Gra Pao sauce, using only enough to coat so the eggplant remains crisp.
9.
Garnish with crispy holy basil leaves and sliced red chilli, then serve immediately.

We sat down with Articolo Studios founder Nicci Kavals to talk through the “Art of Light” philosophy behind every collection, the craftsmanship that defines the brand, and where Articolo is headed next. Articolo Studios has established a distinctive design language recognised around the world. What philosophy guides each collection? At the heart of every Articolo collection is what we call the ‘Art of Light’. Articolo designs feel contemporary and timeless with a European sophistication, not driven by trends, but created to remain relevant for decades to come. My design language was shaped by my formative years as Melbourne Editor of Vogue Entertaining and Travel Magazine. Styling a photoshoot, you would style the shot and then remove two-thirds; the ‘less is more’ approach. We apply the same ethos to our designs. The engineering behind each fixture is often highly complex, yet visually there is a refined simplicity, and achieving that balance is what gives every Articolo piece its timeless aesthetic. Why is preserving traditional artisan techniques so important in an increasingly automated world? Many of the techniques we work with have been refined and passed down through generations. That tacit knowledge is irreplaceable, and the artisans we work with are used to us challenging the materials and pushing their techniques, exploring and experimenting rather than opting for the easier outcome. The beauty of the handmade is that no two pieces are ever exactly the same. Subtle nuances and imperfections give an object its individuality and soul. Every Articolo design reflects the many hands that have produced it and celebrates the craftsmen and women whose skill we deeply respect. There is no substitute for the handmade. How do you balance sculpture and functionality while keeping each piece timeless? Decorative lighting and furniture have become statement pieces within the most considered interiors, thoughtfully selected to enhance a space and create atmosphere and soul. Articolo’s sculptural forms are designed with a sophisticated layering of materials, with each fitting becoming wall and ceiling jewellery or pieces of light sculpture for the home. We continually explore new materials, technologies and manufacturing techniques. Light, form and materiality are intrinsically connected, and the design process is an ongoing dialogue between all three.

personality, inviting moments of calm and reflection. When each fixture is purposefully selected, the shadow play of light animates walls and ceilings, bringing depth, atmosphere and soul to a space. What’s next for Articolo Studios? We have always been focused on creating exceptional design with integrity, craftsmanship and longevity, and that philosophy remains unchanged. The next chapter is about pushing the boundaries of engineering and materiality while expanding the ‘world of Articolo’, with plans to grow our presence internationally through carefully considered showrooms and new categories on the horizon. Creatively, I still have an enormous library of ideas that I’m constantly refining. Some designs take years before they feel resolved, and I enjoy that process of experimentation and continual improvement, always challenging ourselves to achieve something genuinely new, yet unmistakably Articolo. ■
Beyond functionality, how can thoughtful lighting shape the mood of a space? Lighting has the extraordinary ability to completely change how we experience a space. In a world that is more fast-paced than ever, thoughtfully considered lighting provides a sense of cocooning from the outside world. Softly dimmed light creates layering, warmth and

The National Gallery of Victoria invites young imaginations to take centre stage with Children’s Play: Ragnar Kjartansson, an immersive exhibition where theatre, storytelling and creativity come together through interactive sets, costumes and hands-on play.
Created by acclaimed Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, the exhibition marks his first project designed specifically for children. Drawing inspiration from the elaborate celebrations of eighteenth-century European courts and the enduring tradition of theatre, the exhibition invites young visitors to step into a world where costumes, storytelling and performance become part of the experience. Rather than simply viewing artworks, children become active participants. Elaborately designed stage sets feature hand-painted scenes including a woodland forest, a Rococo-inspired garden and a rustic cabin, each brought to life with an array of theatrical props and bespoke costumes. Whether choosing to be an actor, storyteller, audience member or director, every child has the opportunity to invent their own narrative alongside family and friends. Kjartansson’s lifelong connection to theatre informs every detail of the exhibition. Raised by an actor and theatre director, he grew up surrounded by rehearsals, backstage activity and the magic of performance. That influence is reflected throughout the immersive installation, from striped walls and hand-painted curtains to playful illustrations, theatrical lighting and decorative candelabras that create the feeling of stepping behind the scenes of a grand production. Play extends well beyond the stage. Inspired by Kjartansson’s fascination with celebrations and elaborate feasts, children can build colourful cake
sculptures using oversized soft cushions, gather around whimsical banquet displays and participate in drawing activities inspired by food, theatre and imagination. Every element has been thoughtfully designed to encourage hands-on creativity while fostering confidence through open-ended play. The exhibition runs alongside Ragnar Kjartansson: Mercy, offering visitors an opportunity to discover the artist’s celebrated video works, where storytelling, music and performance continue to shape his distinctive creative practice. Together, the exhibitions present a rare insight into one of contemporary art’s most engaging voices while ensuring younger audiences have an experience designed entirely with them in mind. Free to visit at NGV International until 4 October 2026, Children’s Play: Ragnar Kjartansson offers a joyful reminder that imagination has no age limit. Through theatre, storytelling and creative play, it creates a space where art becomes something to experience, not simply observe. ■
