LOOKING BACK, MOVING FORWARD

School holidays are now behind us, and with them the usual seasonal lull in auction activity. The calm reflected the calendar, not the conditions, with many buyers and sellers taking the opportunity to travel, either interstate to warmer climates or overseas. Despite the break, engagement did not disappear. Across the group, we conducted close to 300 open-forinspections over the period, and attendance held up well given the timing.

The Mornington Peninsula told a different story, as it often does at this time of year. Even in the depths of winter, the region typically sees a rise in activity during the school holidays, as not every Melburnian heads north or abroad. Many choose to holiday within the state, and the Peninsula benefits directly from that pattern. We saw solid attendance at opens across the region, along with encouraging sales activity throughout the period.

With the holidays now over, attention shifts back to the auction calendar in earnest. We expect activity to build steadily over the coming weeks as buyers and sellers return to a more typical rhythm. This return also marks the point where planning for spring steps up a gear. Preparation for the August and September market is already well underway across our offices in both Metro and Peninsula, and vendors considering a spring campaign should start those conversations now.

The quieter period behind us was not a sign of a slowing market, simply a seasonal pause. With the holidays over and spring on the horizon, we expect the weeks ahead to see significant increases in both activity and interest. ■

THE EVOLUTION OF EXCELLENCE GAGGENAU

For more than 340 years, Gaggenau has balanced heritage with innovation. The new Gaggenau Expressive series, the brand’s first entirely new cavity appliance range in almost two decades, represents the next evolution of that philosophy.

Founded in 1683 as a blacksmith’s forge in Germany’s Black Forest, Gaggenau has spent centuries refining its expertise in metal craftsmanship, precision engineering and culinary innovation. Today, that legacy finds its most compelling expression in the Gaggenau Expressive series. More than a collection of ovens and culinary appliances, the series represents a bold evolution of the Gaggenau design language, balancing heritage with contemporary living.

For Head of Design Sven Baacke, Industrial Designer Alexander Stuhler and User Interaction and Interface Designer Soeren Strayle, the Expressive series is not simply a new product launch, but the beginning of a new chapter for Gaggenau.

“This new cavity series is significant because it’s the first completely new design in almost twenty years,” says Baacke. “It’s not just an appliance but a piece of art.” For Gaggenau, the challenge was to create a collection that honoured the brand’s heritage while confidently looking towards the future, balancing tradition and innovation in a way that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Inspired by Bauhaus principles and modernist architecture, the Expressive series embraces the philosophy that exceptional design should feel intuitive, purposeful and enduring. Central to the collection is Gaggenau’s distinctive “two frames and a circle” concept, where sculptural geometry, seamless surfaces and refined proportions create an aesthetic that is at once understated and unforgettable.

“The beauty of this design lies in its subtlety,” explains Stuhler.

“There is no contradiction between aesthetics and functionality.” This harmony between visual appeal and performance sits at the heart of the Expressive series, where every detail has been meticulously considered, from reduced visible joins to perfected surfaces and integrated lighting.

At the centre of the collection lies the floating control ring, a tactile and visual statement that encapsulates Gaggenau’s approach to innovation. Developed over many years and countless prototypes, the floating ring bridges the physical and digital worlds, creating

an interaction that feels both familiar and revolutionary. “We asked ourselves how far we could push innovation while ensuring it remained tangible for future users,” says Strayle. Hidden behind the seamless glass façade, the display appears to float, creating what he describes as “a tangible element within a digital environment, where both worlds seamlessly merge.”

The floating ring also serves as a tribute to Gaggenau’s origins as a forge. Crafted from stainless steel through a highly specialised process combining precision milling with expert metalwork, it represents centuries of craftsmanship distilled into a single design feature. Hand-finished stainless steel, precision chamfered edges and meticulous detailing ensure that every element serves both form and function, reinforcing the brand’s enduring commitment to quality.

Yet the true luxury of the Expressive series lies beyond its sculptural form. Advanced heating systems, intelligent cooking programmes, integrated digital connectivity and intuitive interfaces that respond to the user’s presence have all been designed to enhance the experience of cooking and living without compromising the purity of the design. As Stuhler reflects, “It’s not just another oven – it’s an experience that redefines what luxury in the kitchen can feel like.”

In a world increasingly drawn to timelessness over trends, the Gaggenau Expressive series stands as a reminder that true craftsmanship cannot be rushed or replicated. It is a celebration of heritage, precision and enduring beauty; an expression not only of how we cook, but of how we choose to live. ■

A CENTURY OF BEAUTIFUL SOUND

BANG & OLUFSEN

Few brands can claim a century of relevance. Fewer still can point to a philosophy that has stayed the same since day one. For Bang & Olufsen, that philosophy has always been simple: technology should move people, not just function for them.

Founded in 1925 by Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen in a farmhouse in Struer, Denmark, the company began with a single invention, the Eliminator, which allowed battery-powered radios to run on mains electricity. It was a practical solution, but it pointed to something bigger: a belief that innovation and artistry could, and should, go hand in hand.

A hundred years on, that conviction has produced some of the most recognised objects in audio-visual design. The sculptural Beovision 1 television. The iconic Beogram 4000 turntable. The Beolab 90 speaker, which adapts sound to both space and the listener. Each became a reference point not just for performance, but for what technology could look and feel like inside a home.

To mark its centenary, Bang & Olufsen has unveiled the Centenary Programme, a year-long celebration that looks both backward and forward. The Recreated Classics initiative restores heritage products such as the Beogram 4000 and Beosound 9000, remanufacturing them with original components, upgraded technology and modern connectivity. These are not reproductions. They are existing pieces with decades of history behind them, reimagined for contemporary living while keeping the craftsmanship that made them iconic.

The Atelier programme takes a different approach, offering bespoke finishes, unique personalisation and extremely limited editions of current products. The latest release, the Beolab 90 Titan Edition, turns ownership into something personal, reflecting both the client’s taste and the brand’s dedication to craft.

Sustainability runs through the centenary message with equal weight. Bang & Olufsen’s Beosound Level became the world’s first Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze speaker, and nine new products now carry the same certification. For a brand built on longevity, the idea that products should be loved, repaired and passed on feels less like a modern initiative and more like a founding value.

The Centenary Programme extends well beyond the product. A year-long programme of global events and exhibitions will take place across Copenhagen, Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, New York, London and Paris. A book chronicling 100 years of design and innovation will follow, alongside exclusive tours of the brand’s birthplace in Struer and curated collections of accessories celebrating its design heritage.

“The next century of beautiful sound begins today.” says CEO Kristian Teär. For a brand that has spent a hundred years showing that the extraordinary lasts, this is a statement worth taking seriously. ■
