THE TRADITION GOES ON

Edsbyn, situated in the heart of the Swedish forest country, about 300 km NW of Stockholm, has long been a centre for forestry craft industry associated with timber and wood industries. In the past, forestry workers from the surrounding villages travelled to Edsbyn to purchase their tools or to have them repaired by the local blacksmith. This lead to a natural development of the tool industry in the region. In the middle of the 20th century, Edsbyn had several small industries, making axes, saws, and different hand tools for forestry workers. Today, G-Man Tools AB proudly carries on the tradition of saw making, maintaining the high quality, by using Swedish raw material and modern manufacturing techniques.

The company was officially founded on July 12,1984, under the name of Edsbytool AB. The basic business concept was to build on and develop the skill and tradition existing in the region in production and marketing of saws and saw blades for wood. In 1987, Edsbytool joined forces with A/S Grorud Jernvarefabrik of Norway. The Norwegian production and sales were moved to Edsbyn and since their saws were widely known under the trade mark of G-MAN, the company also changed its name to the present G-MAN TOOLS AB. This meant a rapid increase of volume and turnover, and since then a steady increase of sales has lead to a consolidation of the company, which at present employs 30 persons.

During the last few years, considerable investments in machinery and buildings have been made, in order to be well prepared for the future. Export business has always been very important and today, about 80% of the production is exported to more than 45 different markets all over the world. All operations are carried out in our own building, located in Ovanåker, Edsbyn.

Sustainability is a global challenge, so we collaborate, think and innovate to implement more sustainable manufacturing practices and to reduce our carbon footprint, and we believe a good business plan today involve sustainability goals.

Our environmental goals towards 2027 is to reduce our energy consumption with 50% and our water consumption with 85%, measured from 2022, as well as to

35%, and by implementing circular water in our production we reduced our water consumption with 50%. As a result of collaboration and implementation of sustainable raw materials, we began to produce a new bio-composite handle for our saws.

The new handle is made from almost 100% bio-based materials (wood fibers and bio-based plastic), and by using the bio-composites we have reduced our carbon footprint with 65%. The wood fibers in the bio-composite material comes from sustainable forest industries

BOW SAWS & BLADES

The bow saw frames are made from high tensile steel tubing, stove enamelled in orange colour, with zinc-plated tension levers. They are also fitted with saftey rivets that do not fall out when changing the blade. Assembled with re-useable plastic blade guards.

The saw blades for wood are available with 5 different tooth shapes. Most of the blades are produced in hardpoint finish, rust protected and individually packed in attractive carton sleeves.

G-MAN bow saws are available in sizes and variations for all needs. From the small mini saw 149 for garden and camping use to the large model 140, suitable for carpentry work on building sites and for firewood cutting.

TREE PRUNING

Tree pruning is an art that requires knowledge, precision, and the right tools to achieve a good result. Pruning trees and bushes is an important part of garden maintenance and contributes to the plants’ health and growth.

Properly executed tree pruning enhances both air circulation and light penetration, which in turn leads to a healthier plant with more abundant flowering and fruit yield.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TOOLS AND SPECIALIZED SAWS

Effective tree pruning begins with the right tools. From hand-held pruners to specialized saws for working high up in the trees, your choice of tools makes a big difference. When it comes to tree pruning, specialized saws, where precision and caution are crucial to avoid damaging the bark, are also an important part of speeding up the tree’s recovery. Each tool has its specific use, from fine-tuning small branches to removing thick branches.

Unlike traditional hand saws, curved saws have an ergonomic advantage, allowing the user to reach and maintain a comfortable working position under the tree while performing the work. 6 TPI 7 TPI 9 TPI

For tree pruning with a saw, there are curved saws and saws with different sizes of teeth designed to efficiently cut through either fresh branches or dry twigs. A good guideline is to choose small teeth for small branches and large teeth for large branches. Smaller and finer teeth are suitable for thinner branches when you want to ensure a clean and precise cut. This, in turn, facilitates the healing process.

MAKING THE RIGHT CUT

Making the right cut is crucial to avoid damaging your trees and shrubs. Every cut on a tree is like an open wound that needs to heal. Incorrect cuts can lead to diseases and damage that, in the worst case, can kill the tree. When removing a branch, it is important to make the cut close to the stem’s bark ridge, where the plant’s protective mechanisms are most effective. This prevents infections and speeds up healing. Additionally, it is important not to leave any stubs as they can be entry points for diseases.

Topping involving removing the upper parts of the tree crown, should be avoided as it can seriously damage the tree and lead to weak growth.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENT

Sustainable tree pruning includes not only the choice of manual tools instead of motorized options to reduce environmental impact but also ensuring that each tree pruning is carried out gently. Manual saws provide precision and reduce the risk of damage to the tree compared to a motorized saw that can cut too fast and make ugly cuts. When choosing a saw, you need to consider that a saw with sharp teeth is not always the best choice but choose teeth based on the size of the branch to be pruned. Small branches, small teeth, and large branches, large teeth.

SOME TIPS FOR TREE PRUNING

Make sure not to save more than one leader shoot to get a finer tree crown

Save the branches that grow outwards and remove those that grow inwards to get an airier tree crown.

Don’t let the branches fight for space; remove those that grow in the same direction or that chafe and sit too close to each other.

The strongest branches are usually those that grow out from the trunk. Those that grow towards the trunk should be removed.

Remove dead and dry branches or if you see branches that appear sick or damaged.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE OF THE SAW BLADE

To ensure that your saw lasts for many years, you can follow these tips:

• Wash the saw blade with warm water

• Make sure to dry it thoroughly

Moisture and rain increase the risk of fungal attacks, so tree pruning is best done on a sunny and fine day.

• Rub a little oil on the saw blade with a cloth

• Store the saw in a dry place

RECIPROCATING BLADES

The range of reciprocating saw blades has been continually extended ever since production commenced in 1988. More than fifty different types are currently available and are divided into three basic categories.

Bi-metal blades

Blades of this type have a cobalt alloy high speed steel cutting edge welded to a flexible spring steel back. This combination creates a sawblade with exceptional cutting performance and wear resistance. The range includes blades for various applications such as metal, wood and heavy-duty demolition work.

Tungsten carbide blades

Suitable for cutting hardwearing materials such as cast iron, building brick, Plexiglas and similar materials.

Carbon steel blades

Used for the easy and accurate sawing of plain wood. Blades made from stainless steel are also available for use with meats.

JIGSAW BLADES

G-MAN jigsaw blades are specially designed for a wide variety of applications:

Carbon steel blades with cross sharpened and set teeth enable faster cutting than blades with milled and set teeth. Suitable for both wood and plastics.

Carbon steel blades with cross sharpened teeth and conical ground are used for accurate and clean cuts in both wood and plastics.

Bi-metal blades are available for cutting metals, clean wood and nail-embedded wood.

Tungsten carbide blades are intended for use with hardwearing materials such as tiles, plaster, fibreglass, eternite and building brick, etc.
