Former heavyweight boxer lost his life on a scooter (his ‘happy-place’) REITZ: One of South Africa’s better heavyweights, Bennie Knoetze, who fought as a professional from March 1980 to September 1987, was killed in an accident while driving his scooter near Reitz in the Free State on Friday. He was 61. Evidently, he enjoyed the exhilarating feeling of driving his beloved Vespa scooter with other friends from the club. He was born on 20 June 1959 and named Barend Mattheus but was known

as “Bennie”. Bennie joined the police force soon after leaving school and became a career policeman before he retired recently. As an amateur, he won the South African heavyweight title in 1979 and then made his pro debut on 8 March 1980 with four-round points win over Timothy Zwane. He was also a good rugby player. He had many highlights over the years of boxing and his last fight was on 12 September 1987,
when he was knocked out in the first round by Johnny Du Plooy (15-0) to finish with a record of 25-3; 17. His daughter, Rouchelle Knoetze wrote on Facebook: “My pappie, gelukkigste man as hy op sy vespa is. Sy happy place en ‘gelove’ om te ‘pose’ vir ‘n foto saam sy vespa. Ek sal pa verewig só onthou. My hart is seer pappa, so bitter seer!”

…at the scene they found a white Subaru Forester EMS response vehicle parked on the side of the road facing the Bethlehem direction. Colonel Mbambo says the keys were still in the ignition and the headlights on. She says the deceased was not in his EMS uniform but was positively identified as a staff member from the Bethlehem Emergency Medical Services. The deceased, whose name has not yet been released, was found on the ground behind his vehicle with his sandals next to him. He sustained five gunshot wounds to the back of his head. The motive for the murder is not known and no arrests have been made. (from page 3)

FREE STATE: Economic growth, job creation, preservation of the natural environment, and revitalization of the tourism sector in the Free State are key priorities. This is according to the MEC Makalo Mohale. Delivering the 2021/22 financial year budget for the Department of Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) recently. Mohale said it is highly concerning that youth unemployment in the province stands at 48.2%. He told Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) and the communities
of the Free State, that accelerating economic growth is his top priority. Whilst he confirmed the Covid-19 pandemic had devastating effects on many businesses, he highlighted that the majority of Small, Medium, Micro-Enterprises (SMMEs) were hard-hit. Mohale announced that the bulk of his department’s R604 million budget, will go towards economic revitalization programmes, whilst R227 million is allocated specifically to support (SMMEs), and R10 million will go for the tourism industry.

How do I register? Who can register? Do you know who your local ward councillor is? It’s important for all South Africans to know their ward councillor because they are the link between the municipality and the community they serve. People can also take their problems to the ward councillor and he/she should deal with these in an appropriate way What is a local councillor? A local councillor is a person who provides political leadership in a ward of a municipality. It can be a metropolitan municipality, district municipality or local municipality. A local councillor can be elected as an independent candidate or represent a political party. They occupy an office for a period of five years in line with the local government elections. The ward councillor is elected by citizens living in the ward where he/she is standing for elections. What is the role of a councillor? A ward councillor is expected to make sure that the concerns raised by people in his/her ward are represented in council. He/she must also ensure that the ward committee exists and that people in the ward participate in local government. The councillor must report back regularly through ward meetings and help the community in identifying needs and priority areas of development, which will help the municipality’s planning processes. Types of councillors A ward councillor ensures that the
interests of people in a specific ward are represented in council. He/she reports on council activities on a regular basis to the ward to strengthen the relationship with community. A proportional representative councillor is a member of a political party and is elected through the party lists. He/she is accountable to the party. An independent councillor does not belong to a political party and is accountable to the people who have elected him/her to represent their interests. Issues you can raise with your councillor: Water supply Illegal electricity connections Housing Refuse collection Faulty traffic lights Dilapidated infrastructure Grass that needs cutting Any other services offered by the municipality. Complaints against your councillor When you have a complaint against your councillor, you can approach the chief whip’s office of the political party he or she belongs to. If it is an independent councillor, you can approach or send a petition to the council’s office. How can I find out who my councillor is? COVID-19 fuels pet obesity COVID-19 has had a profound effect on all of us including our pets, with recent research* undertaken in the US revealing that more than 71% of pet professionals say that the pandemic has impacted the way our pets are eating. As a result of this, over 30% of pet parents surveyed who have an overweight pet, say that their pet has become overweight since the start of the pandemic. Many of us have an emotional relationship with food so it is not surprising that we have developed this for our pets too during these tough times when we are spending more time at home. 50% of pets are overweight, but alarmingly 90% of pet parents don’t even realise this. For many pet parents the love for their pets is associated with food. “This ‘Love your pet day’ celebrated on 20th February, Hill’s Pet Nutrition is drawing attention to pet obesity and that, contrary to popular belief, your pet’s love for you is not associated with food,” says Marycke Ackhurst pet behaviour expert from Hill’s. So, what would you give-up to help your pet lose weight? A recent survey undertaken by Hill’s showed that: 49% of pet parents said they would be willing to go on a diet to help their pet lose weight, while 31% said they would be willing to stop checking their social media for a month to help their pet lose weight.

Easy Jam Squares
DESCRIPTION Delicious jam squares recipe made from pantry staples in just 30 minutes. Easy recipe to bake with the kids and share with the whole family. INGREDIENTS 125g butter 1/4 cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 cups jam (I used Apricot) INSTRUCTIONS Using a blender, cream the butter and sugar together until creamy Add the egg and vanilla essence and beat until well combined. Add the flour (sieve it if you are feeling diligent!) and baking powder and mix until
a dough forms. Then using your hands, press the dough together until it forms a ball. Use 2/3 of the dough and spread it along the base of a greased baking tin (Place the other third in the fridge for now). I used a 30 x 20cm tin. Using the head of a fork, poke holes into the dough to prevent air bubbles forming (imagine the dough cut into slices – each slice needs to be pricked with the fork) Lather on the jam nice and thick! Grate the remaining 1/3 of the dough and scatter on the top of the jam (if the dough is too soft to grate, pop it in the fridge/freezer for a few minutes) Bake at 180°C for 20-30 minutes until dough is slightly browned and the jam is all gooey! Allow to cool and then slice into squares. Enjoy!

"Ons voorouers het manna in die woestyn geëet, soos daar geskrywe staan: Hy het aan hulle brood uit die hemel gegee om te eet.” Jesus het hulle geantwoord: “Dít verseker Ek julle: Dit is nie Moses wat vir julle die brood uit die hemel gegee het nie, maar dit is my Vader wat vir julle die ware brood uit die hemel gee. Die brood wat God gee, is Hy wat uit die hemel kom en aan die wêreld die lewe gee. Hulle sê toe vir Hom: “Meneer, gee ons tog altyd hierdie brood.” Maar Jesus sê vir hulle: “Ek is die brood wat lewe gee. Wie na My toe kom, sal nooit weer honger kry nie, en wie in My glo, sal nooit weer dors kry nie." (Joh. 6:31-35) Inderdaad né, Jesus is ons stapelvoedsel, die brood wat lewe gee, die brood wat jy elke dag kan eet, die brood wat nooit klaar raak nie. Jy onthou hoe die brood vermeerder is en hoe duisende dit nie kon opeet nie. So kan ek en jy ook nie die Brood wat lewe gee, klaar eet nie. Die "dis" wat jy elke dag maak sal elke dag anders proe, en jou resepte en idees sal nooit opraak nie, en jy sal elke dag gevoed word. Jy hoef nooit in jou lewe weer geestelik honger te wees nie, die spens is oorvol met nuwe kraakvars brood, elke liewe dag, en dis daar vir jou, verniet. Geniet dit, nuttig dit, en dink elke keer wat jy 'n stukkie brood eet aan Jesus se liggaam wat vir jou gebreek is. En vier sommer soms so by jouself nagmaal as jy brood eet. Sommer so by jouself, of saam met jou gesin. Dalk sommer ook as jy en 'n vriend tydens etenstyd 'n broodjie nuttig. Wat 'n eenvoudige maaltyd is 'n toebroodjie nie, en hoe eenvoudig is die evangelie ook nie, selfs 'n kind kan dit verstaan. Neem daardie Brood wat lewe gee en maak Hom jou eie. Dis elke dag vars. Inspiration for the week
Remember, You’re Worthy Of Love This is still a lesson in progress actually. Going to Joburg and speaking to Hakeem was what I needed to do. No friend or family member could understand the inner workings of what I was experiencing, and so only he could really make me listen by giving me some tough love… And while I still struggle to accept this and truly believe it in the depths of my soul, I know that I am worthy of love and my trip to Joburg was that reminder. It’s a lot easier to believe the negative of a situation sometimes – to tell yourself how unworthy and undeserving you are of love based off of someone else’s actions saying that. But that’s all it really is – their actions, which only reflect their own character. It has nothing to do with you. While I knew this
was going to be a tough pill to swallow on my flight to Joburg, it was undeniably satisfying to also know that Hakeem was being as truthful and honest as he always is. Knowing that I had someone who wanted nothing more than to see me thrive on the other side of the pain that was my roadblock, gave me the reassurance to believe him when he said “Khalipha, you are worthy of love.” If there is another thing you should take away from this post, it is to surround yourself with people who genuinely want to see you win. I don’t have a wide circle of friends but the few that I do have, I know that I can trust them to be little lights in my life and truthfully remind me of the value I have. - Khalipha Ntloko
