FARMERS, ROAD-USERS AND CONTRACT-WORKERS EMBARK ON A PEACEFUL PROTEST ON R26

REITZ: Road subcontractors doing special maintenance on the R26 here in Reitz, Tweeling and Frankfort in the Free State have threatened to close the road if the Roads and Transport Department does not respond to their demands. This report was announced on Wednesday 17 November 2021. The subcontractors are up in arms after the main contractor

allegedly failed to pay them. The construction work was abandoned in March 2020 following the AuditorGeneral's report indicating that proper procedure was not followed in the appointment of the main contractor. Some of the subcontractors have not been to work for a year as they are still waiting to be paid for the work already

done on the gravel road. Motorists say they are travelling on the bad R26 gravel road which is causing damage to their vehicles as there is no alternative route between towns. On Tuesday 16 November contractors, local farmers, road users and residents embarked on a peaceful protest on the route to express their grievance towards authorities.

SEVERAL DROWNINGS REPORTED IN THE FREE STATE – ONE IN LINDLEY

LINDLEY: An unknown body of a male person has been retrieved from the Liebenbergsvlei River by the Welkom Search and Rescue Team this week. According to the Free State Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, the team discovered the unknown male person’s body while they were searching for the body of a 15-year-old boy, who allegedly drowned while he was swimming with his other two friends. The friends tried to rescue him but failed. Makhele explained the search for the boy’s body began immediately after the police were notified about the incident and he was found on the fifth day of the search. The unknown body of a male person was retrieved from the river and handed over to the state mortuary. Inquest cases have been opened for both incidents. It was previously reported that a grade 12 learner from the Olien Secondary School has lost his life after drowning in a dam at Fauresmith. This is after eight learners decided to go for a swim after they were released from the premises. Meanwhile, the Welkom Search and Rescue Team also retrieved a body of a 31-year-old woman from a dam at Lindley. The discovery of the body was made by community members that were walking inside the municipal camp at the bank of the dam.

FICKSBURG: This passing weekend was all about cherries and having fun! Ionia Cherry Farm was blooming with tasty cherry madness! Ionia, situated near the town Ficksburg in the Eastern Free State is a division of Bloukruin Landgoed and consider themselves as job creators, food producers and an entity that enrich people's lives through tourism, but one’s a year right after the annual cherry crop, the Ionia Cherry Farm embark on a weekend of endless celebration. Ionia is most definitely not ‘the newkid-on-the-block’ when it comes to festivals. For several years they have hosted this event filled with sporting events, cherry tours, tasty food, drinks & treats, fun & games for the young ones, hand craft exhibitors and don’t forget about the world class live entertainment. After this weekend, the owners took it to social media and thanked the whole country for their support, writing: “What an amazing weekend! Thank you to all who made this weekend a big success! Thank you for all the support, the laughter and joy.” Visitors flew in as far as Cape Town to take part in what the weekend had to offer. Local accommodation was jam-packed and fully booked with visitors, and locals visited Ionia as part of their annual ritual of entertainment, from ‘sussie & boetie’ and ‘ouma & oupa’ was in the car ready to visit the event of the year.

Local Businessman and restaurant owner Gavin Boy from Ficksburg, treated guests with a scrumptious breakfast run just before they embarked on the festival.

Bottomless Coffee Band moments before they boarded the airplane at the Cape Town International Airport on Facebook wrote: “Ionia Cherry Festival 2021, ONS IS OPPAD Fouriesburg toe!”

TBS BROKERS GOLF DAY 2021

FICKSBURG: As a enthused event to the Cherry celebrations across the Eastern Free State The Ficksburg Golf Club recently had the privilege to, together with the cherry fever host the TBS Brokers Golf Day 2021 on Friday 19 November 2021. The day was a huge success with lots of entries and support. The weather also was exceptionally good for a Golf Day of this calibre. There was tons of prizes that players won for their golfing skills. TBS also offered a chance to win a 2 seat electric golf cart worth R50 000 for a hole in one.

CLOCOLAN: The Eastern Free State was filled with a cherry fever this weekend and the Constantia Cherry Farm was most definitely the place to be… (And it wasn’t just ‘fever’ from the effect of the exclusive cherry mampoer!). The Constantia Cherry Farm, a beautiful cherry farm in the Eastern Free State, between Clocolan and the Koranna mountains owned by the Higgo family, did not disappoint its visitors this year. Talking about the famous mampoer, some zing can be added to any gathering with this special cherry mampoer that is available on the farm – “add the Pienk Verdriet or Rooi Raps cherry liqueur to make it a party!” The event was filled with lots to do, like food stalls, fresh cherries and live entertainment by a barnyard style – concert by famous singer Demi-Lee Moore. Visitors also filled the hunger with a mouthwatering lamb-spit pita. One visitor on Facebook wrote: “Oh definitely... a must stop, lovely friendly staff lots of cherry products and tasters and highly recommend you have a bite to eat and a coffee. Will be back if we ever go that way again.”
