LINDLEY RAPIST SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON AT BETHLEHEM MAGISTRATES COURT LINDLEY: A 25-year-old man from Lindley has been sentenced to life behind bars for raping a 63-year-old woman. Lerato Mohono was sentenced in the Bethlehem Regional Sexual Offences Court this week. According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, Mohono broke into the woman's house on 21 February this year and raped her. "When leaving the house, he took along her cellphone. The neighbours reported that they saw him leaving the house and they executed a community arrest. He was handed over by the mass to the Lindley police. "The case was successfully handled and investigated by Detective Constable Khehla Mosikidi of Bethlehem Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit."

Essie Volschenk (foto links) van Reitz se begrafnisdiens is onlangs lewendig uitgesaai op sosiale media. “Sy gaan verseker ook baie gemis word. Sterte aan haar familie en vriende met julle verlies. “Wil jy gesond word?” Wie van ons sou nie met ons hele wese ja antwoord op dié vraag wanneer jy siek is, in pyn verkeer, as behandeling nie vinnig genoeg help nie, as die dokter self raadop is, as daar geen ander hulp is nie? Hoeveel te meer as dit Jesus sélf is wat dié vraag vra. Jesus, die Groot Geneesheer, Wonderwerker, Helper, Redder. In Joh. 5:6 vra Jesus dié vraag aan ’n man wat al agt en dertig jaar lank siek was en elke dag by die bad van Betesda saam met vele ander siekes gewag het op genesing. Soms vind genesing plaas deur ’n wonderwerk, soms gebeur dit terwyl ons bid, soms gebeur dit wanneer iemand sy hande op jou lê en jou met olie salf, maar meestal gebeur dit deur die hulp van ’n dokter, deur ’n operasie, dalk chemoterapie, dalk ’n inspuiting, pilletjie of stropie, salf of pleister. Ek glo die Here wil ook hê dat ons ons liggame moet oppas en voorsorg tref om nié siek te word nie, soos bv. om beskikbare entstowwe te gebruik. Ek weet daar is deesdae lang debatte en meningsverskille oor die Covid-entstowwe, maar tog vertrou ek dat dit ’n hulpmiddel uit die Here se hand is. Hoe dit ook al sy, alle genesing kom áltyd van die Here af, al is dit deur medisyne of watse mediese hulp ook al. Hou daarom voortdurend jou oog op die Een wat genees en nie die geneesmiddel nie. Ons lees dikwels hoedat Jesus mense met die spreek van ’n woord genees het, maar tog wel ook op ander maniere. So bv. het Hy spoeg aan die doofstom man se tong gesmeer (Mark 7:33) of klei gemaak van spoeg en grond om aan ’n blinde se oë te smeer (Joh. 9:6). Heel dikwels het genesing oombliklik plaasgevind, maar tog het die tien melaatses eers gesond geword toe hulle op pad is om hulleself aan die priesters te wys. (Luk. 17:14) Meestal kom genesing nie in ’n oogwink nie en vereis dit uithouvermoë en geduld van ons kant af. Dikwels moet ons weer en weer bid en nog ’n keer pleit vir die Here se aanraking. En ja, soms kom daar nie genesing nie. Ons ken al almal iemand wat dood is aan kanker of Covid, ons weet almal van iemand wat met een of ander ongeneeslike siekte saamleef. Ons verstaan dit nie en ons kan dit nie verklaar nie, dit ís egter ’n realiteit. Ons rus en troos lê daarin dat ons nie alleen is nie en dat die Here se arms altyd rondom ons is ... selfs al gaan ek ook in ’n dal van doodskaduwee. Kom altyd na die Here met jou pyn – sy hart is sag, sy jammerte lê vlak en Hy sien jou desperaatheid. Stort jou hart voor Hom uit en smeek nog ’n keer vir genesing, nog ’n keer vir Sy aanraking. “Hy het hulle innig jammer gekry en die siekes onder hulle gesond gemaak.” (Matt. 14:14) Mag Hy dit vir jou ook doen.

VRYSTAAT: Die liggaam van Petrus Steyn(53) is Donderdag 30 September 2021 deur een van sy werkers gekry in ŉ pakkamer op die plaas Holfontein tussen Heilbron en Frankfort hier in die Vrystaat. Volgens brig. Motantsi Makhele, polisiewoordvoerder, het Steyn se vrou die plaaswerker gebel en gevra om te gaan ondersoek instel na hom, waar hy toe op Steyn se lyk afgekom het. Daar was voetspore buite die huis en ŉ brandkluis is met ŉ hoekslyper oopgesny. Dit lyk egter nie of iets uit die kluis vermis word nie. Steyn se pistool en rewolwer word vermis. Die voertuie met sleutels is ook nog op die plaas. Volgens die polisie het Steyn verskeie kopbeserings opgedoen wat waarskynlik deur ‘n skerp voorwerp veroorsaak is.

REITZ: Tydens die 40ste Matrikulant van die jaar kompetisie, is matrikulante wat uitstekende prestasies behaal het onlangs aangewys. Daar was 70 inskrywings ontvang, maar is uitgedun na die Top 25 finaliste, waar hulle in aanmerking kom vir ‘n reuse kontant en ander groot pryse. “Hierdie leerlinge het afgesien van die pandemie nogsteeds presteer.” Carlize de Bruyn van Hoërskool Reitz is aangewys as een van die finalist. Die skool het op sosiale media gesê: “Baie geluk aan ons 2021-hoofdogter, Carlize de Bruyn, wat onder die Top 25 matrikulante is in die Matrikulant van die Jaar-kompetisie! Hoërskool Reitz is baie trots op dié spogprestasie!”

Om ’n gemeenskap te ontwikkel en die uitdagings van die dag aan te spreek moet ’n mens strukture bou en volhoubare oplossings bied. ONS STRATEGIE EN VOLHOUBARE OPLOSSINGS: Om hulpbronne, energie en tyd te spandeer aan oplossings wat nie volhoubaar is nie, maak nie sin nie. Daarom was Solidariteit Helpende Hand se strategie van die begin af sterk strukture wat volhoubare oplossings bied. Armoede moenie net draagliker gemaak word nie, maar moet voorkom en verbreek word. By monde van Flip Buys was die beste helpende hand nog altyd dié een aan die einde van elke mens se eie arm. Daarom is dit Solidariteit Helpende Hand se doel om

mense te help om hulself te help. ONS PROJEKTE: Ons is besig met verskeie projekte. Vandag deel ek graag een daarvan met julle: BEMAGTIG ’n KIND Kinders is ŉ kwesbare deel van ons samelewing – hulle kies nie in watter huis of in watter omstandighede hulle grootword nie. Soms verg dit net ŉ klein verskil in so ŉ kind se lewe om vir hom of haar ŉ brug te bou na beter omstandighede, hetsy dit koshuisgelde, vervoer na en van die skool, remediërende onderrig, terapie of iets anders is wat hulle benodig. Elke aansoek wat ingedien word, word deur ŉ paneel bespreek en op meriete beoordeel, en elke kind se individuele behoeftes word in ag geneem wanneer hierdie aansoeke oorweeg word. Die administrasie en finansies van suksesvolle aansoeke word deur Helpende Hand se maatskaplike en finansiële afdelings behartig en geen betalings word direk aan ouers gemaak nie – dit word slegs aan die betrokke instansie self oorbetaal. Die fondse wat vir die Bemagtig-ŉ-kind-projek aangewend word, vorm deel van die JD Kestell-gedenkfonds. Dié fonds is vernoem na dr. John Daniel Kestell, oftewel Vader Kestell, soos hy bekend

Vader Kestell was in sy eerste bedieningsjare as predikant só geraak deur die verarming van die Afrikaner dat hy besluit het om sy lewe daaraan te wy om verarmde Afrikaners geestelik, kultureel en maatskaplik op te hef. Vir Vader Kestell was onderrig die sleutel om die kringloop van armoede te verbreek. MANUFACTURING ENTREPRENEURS CALLED TO ENTER ESKOM’S BUSINESS COMPETITION

The Eskom Development Foundation calls on black entrepreneurs in the manufacturing sector to enter its annual Business Investment Competition (BIC). Launched in 2008, the BIC is an annual competition targeting black-owned small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs), giving them a platform to showcase their service offering, capacitating them with business skills, and granting them an opportunity to network and market their businesses on a national platform. To participate, the businesses must be in the engineering/construction, manufacturing, agriculture/agriprocessing or trade/services sectors, and have been in operation for at least 24 months. Now in its 13th consecutive year, the competition’s prize money totals R1,3 million. The overall winner will receive R300 000, and the winner of each sector will take home R131 250, whereas the first and second runners-up will each receive R75 000 and R50 000 respectively. Manufacturing, is South Africa’s fourth-largest industry, contributing 14% to South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP). Eskom is calling all small businesses in this sector

to seize the opportunity that the Business Investment Competition presents, as it is aimed at contributing to their development and sustainability. “Although statistics show a 1,6% growth in the manufacturing sector in the first quarter of 2021 compared with the 4th quarter of 2020, showing signs of economic recovery, we realise the impact that Covid_19 has had on this sector over the past year, particularly the small players that require greater assistance to stay afloat,” said Cecil Ramonotsi, Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation. In the report on the survey of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA’s) Impact of Covid – 19 on Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises since lockdown, released in September 2020, the respondents cited the challenges that the pandemic posed to the small business sector, as lack of revenue generation (26%), cash-flow challenges (22%), and the inability to generate sales (14%). “Eskom’s Business Investment Competition not only provides a cash injection to entrepreneurs to sustain their businesses but also, through our

Business Connect workshops that the finalists participate in after the competition, we build their capacity with business skills to help them navigate the challenging economic terrain that the pandemic created,” added Ramonotsi. “Despite the challenges that the Covid-19 pandemic created, we were able to reinvest the prize money received from the 2020 BIC into the business by getting an electricity upgrade in our factory to increase our production capacity,” said Tshepo Mazibuko of KI Recycling, manufacturing-sector winners in the 2020 Business Investment Competition. “Our Corporate Social Investment approach at Eskom has shifted, particularly concerning enterprise development, to interventions aimed at creating an enabling environment for black industrialists to emerge and thrive,” said Ramonotsi. Blom waar jy geplant is. Al val jou lewenssaad in die ashoop. Aanvanklik voel jy dalk weggesmyt soos die lappop of slegte saad op die askar. Dimakatso en haar man bly by Koppies se ashoop. Neffens die graansilo's naby die vierrigtingstop. Die paartjie is gelukkig en staan uit die as op. Letterlik en figuurlik. Wegsmytgoed is hul skatte. Afrikanertjies gedy langs 'n netjiese legkaartpad van gebreekte sementblokke. Op die werf naby aan die pad oorkant die begraafplaas by die silo's pronk 'n vliegtuig, helikopter en hul eie JoJo met windpomp. Hul leef hul droom uit en ek wonder of hul al werklik in 'n regte vliegtuig op die wieke van die wolke oor Koppies se lugruim hul pampoene op die sinkdak kon bespied. My ma durf die slaggatpad by Koppies in eem van haar plat Mercedes Benze aan om van Gauteng by my op plat Kroonstad te kom kuier. Sy stop op 'n dag spesiaal by Dimakatso langs die pad en op Sesotho gesels hul land en sand. My ma bewonder hul nederige herwinde skuiling. Eintlik 'n pondok. Dimakatso bly lekker. Haar plantjies en saailinge kom aan. Dít my liewe vriende is 'n ware storie van 'n gegoede vrou, Kotie Hurter, wat nie neus punt in die lug net aan haarself dink nie. Dis my ma wat omgee. Dis nie nodig om te dink of Dimakatso en Kotie dalk 'n kloof tussen hul ervaar het nie. Die brûe word deur die gemeenskaplike belangstelling en taal gebou. Dis onnodig om te vra wie die dankbaarste oor die padgroet neffens die dorpie was. Dink self wie glimlag die breedste oor menslikheid en lekkerbly. Dankie dat ek deur my ma beveel is om dié ontmoeting neer te pen. Soos hul sê: Stop. Smell the roses. Gee sonder om rekord te hou. Die prys van 'n glimlag tussen twee mense het nie 'n prysetiket nie.

FEELING A LITTLE LUMP IN YOUR THROAT? FAST EASY FACTS ABOUT THYROID CANCER Shaped like a butterfly, an average of 4 cm wide and sits just below the Adam’s apple. Nodules or growths on the thyroid are quite common and most are benign (not harmful). It’s a small gland at the back of a neck that produces hormones that regulate one’s mood, temperature, body metabolisms and other important processes. According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), only 7-15% of thyroid nodules are malignant and about 50% of people over the age of 40 have a thyroid nodule. It is still very much more common in women than in men, considered also sometimes to be hereditary and thyroid cancer most commonly manifests between the ages of 35 and 65. (SANOFI, 2021) It is treatable, even curable… There are a variety of different treatments for thyroid cancer, however, it is all dependent on the tumour size and how far it has spread. If detected early and treated in due time, thyroid cancer patients have a long-term survival rate. The estimated burden of thyroid cancer for South Africa for 2018 according to Globocan estimates (sanofi.co.za) are as follows. - the annual number of thyroid cancer cases is 2408, whereas - the annual number of deaths is 157. These treatments which include surgery, radioiodine therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy are usually successful. The recovery rate is considered to be very high. It’s non-fatal and almost isn’t ever diagnosed because of its least checked common body area – the neck. (Healthline, 2021) “I didn’t know it was there!” Although signs and symptoms aren’t always common, it is always a good idea to feel around your neck. A general checkup with your doctor is due if you experience any of the following: A lump in your neck, hoarse voice, difficulty in breathing/swallowing or just a typical pain in your throat. Other symptoms may include neck pain that may radiate up to your ears or a persistent cough not caused by illness. Risk factors include stress, pregnancy, and smoking. The most common way for diagnosis is through CT scans, neck ultrasounds and blood tests. Why not try out an easy DIY neck examination in the comfort of your home by searching for a relevant video online and following the instructions given in the illustrations. THERE ARE A FEW VERY IMPORTANT REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE: 1) It’s your Constitutional responsibility: While South Africa doesn’t have compulsory voting like some other countries, our Constitution gives citizens’ rights along with responsibilities. Chapter 1, Section 3 of the Constitution says that all citizens are equally entitled to the rights, privileges and benefits of citizenship and equally subjected to the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. A crucial responsibility given to all citizens over 18 years old is to participate in our democracy! 2) Vote to have a say who is elected public representative in your city, town and area. If you don’t vote you won’t have a say in who is elected to lead your city or town: Elections are a chance for ordinary citizens to come together to determine democratically who is elected as their representative on the municipal council – and what key issues they are going to promote for the next five years. If you don’t participate, others are going to choose for you! 3) Democracy and democratic political rights were hardearned rights the world over, but in South Africa, it was the liberation struggles that achieved equality for all. People died so you can vote: Until just 27 years ago, the majority of South African citizens were denied the right to vote and have any say in how the country was run. WHAT’S YOUR RETIREMENT PLAN?

So, just quietly … let me ask you, what do you have planned for the rest of your life? Most of us don’t really know how long we have left on this earth. So what do you want to do, to achieve? How do you want to live out your final years, days? They’re interesting questions, aren’t they? For the most part, people end up planning a retirement, hopefully stashing away enough to be comfortable. Of course, that’s not an option for everyone. Others worry about being destitute, hoping to rely on their family for support. But the desire for security is pretty much a universal one. And in many cultures, my own included, that morphs very quickly and very easily into a desire to be comfortable, which of course means a desire to be rich. One of the things you notice about many a retiree is that their world has become very narrow. I hadn’t noticed that until a financial planner with many older clients pointed it out to me. But there’s a lot of truth in that observation, and it’s not pretty. Can that really be what God has planned for the rest of your days? Or is there perhaps an alternative? 2 Corinthians 8:9 You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. You know that he gave up his heavenly riches for you. He gave up everything so that you could be richly blessed. Jesus turns our tendency towards selfish comfort and security completely on its head. He gave up everything so that we could be richly blessed. And again, by observation, I can tell you that those older folk who continue to live with the aim of serving others, blessing others, sacrificing for others, tend to lead a much richer life than those who focus on themselves. So let me ask you again … what do you have planned for the rest of your life? That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Beef COLOURFUL CINDER Short Rib BLOCK PLANTERS Potjie 2 kilograms beef short ribs, cut into chunks 1 dash salt, to taste 1 drizzle olive oil Sauce: 1 onion, quartered 4 garlic cloves, crushed 500 ml tomato paste 125 ml BBQ marinade 125 ml tomato sauce 125 ml cider vinegar 30 ml Worcestershire sauce 500 ml beef stock 15 ml ground coriander 15 ml smoked paprika 60 ml brown sugar 3 bay leaves 1 sprig thyme, sage and rosemary Heat a cast-iron potjie over medium coals. Make sure you have a little side fire going to provide enough coals to add for duration of cooking. Season meat all over and brown in oil. Mix sauce ingredients together and pour over meat. Cook for 2½ -3 hours or until very tender (you’ll have to add a little water when necessary). Serve with coleslaw and rice, polenta or rolls.
