Standing as some of the most iconic landmarks on the Grid, lighthouses in Second Life serve a purpose that goes far beyond simple navigation. While they originally helped sailors find their way through the early sims, today they function as community hubs, romantic viewpoints, and masterpieces of virtual architecture. From the serene, picturesque atmosphere of Pususaari to the rugged, atmospheric shores of Inis Orr, these beacons define the coastal aesthetic of the platform. In this feature, we explore some of my favourite lighthouses that continue to guide residents toward the best views and most tranquil spots in SL.
The Azure Haven lighthouse is a classic stone structure featuring a wooden roof, balcony, and entrance door, situated on a private island just off the coast. It anchors the sim’s 19th-century Mediterranean theme, where the vibe is defined by rustic simplicity and natural beauty. Visitors can wander through lavender fields and olive groves, relax by a stone fountain, or spot dolphins near the local fishing hut in a setting designed for quiet, historical immersion.
The Dutch Coast lighthouse is a traditional stone tower situated on a separate island, accessible only by boat. It overlooks a rugged landscape of sand dunes, sea grass, and rocky shores where sheep graze near the water's edge. The sim avoids formal village layouts, instead featuring a mix of simple cottages, beach areas, and weathered shacks that create a quiet, rugged atmosphere.
The Inis Orr lighthouse is a sturdy stone tower that anchors the rugged, windswept landscape of the sim. Inspired by the Aran Islands, the structure sits atop high limestone cliffs, overlooking a coastline of craggy rocks and crashing waves. The surrounding area is characterised by traditional dry-stone walls, roaming ponies and sheep, and sparse vegetation, creating a desolate yet peaceful atmosphere. It serves as a stark, historical landmark that defines the sim’s focus on authentic, rural Irish coastal life.
The LOULOU lighthouse is a classic white masonry tower with a traditional red lantern room, situated on a grassy bluff overlooking the water. It serves as a central landmark for a sim known for its casual, summer-inspired atmosphere and expansive sandy beaches. The surrounding area features beach clubs, boardwalks, and open spaces for socialising, creating a bright and approachable coastal vibe. The lighthouse provides a clean, iconic silhouette that fits the sim’s focus on lighthearted recreation and tropical relaxation.
The Luanes World lighthouse is a weathered stone structure situated on a small island just off the coastline. For the spring 2026 revamp, the sim has been redesigned into a series of romantic areas connected by a network of rivers and bridges. The landscape features waterfalls, quiet ponds, and a dedicated beach area, all surrounded by lush fields filled with wildflowers. This layout creates a tranquil, scenic environment where the lighthouse serves as a distant, picturesque focal point.
The Mimmo Dancing Waves lighthouse is a traditional, towering structure that overlooks a lively, music-centered coastal region. It serves as a prominent landmark for a sim defined by its expansive dance floors and social waterfront, where the focus is on nightlife and community gatherings. The area surrounding the lighthouse features tropical vegetation, beachside amenities, and open-air decks designed to take advantage of the sunset views. It acts as a stable anchor for the sim’s high-energy, celebratory atmosphere, providing a classic maritime backdrop for visitors.
The spring revamp of Pususaari centers on a new, decommissioned lighthouse that serves as a quiet landmark for the region. Moving away from a polished look, the structure features salt-crusted glass and a dark lantern, fitting perfectly into the sim’s rustic, coastal atmosphere. The update also introduces a new landing-point café, rolling meadows, and a Tuscan-style farmhouse. Together, these elements transform the area into a tranquil spot for photography and exploration, balancing the ruggedness of the shore with the fresh greenery of the season.
As Second Life moves into May, these lighthouses stand as central focal points for the season’s most vibrant landscapes. No longer tied to the practicalities of navigation, they are utilised by sim designers to add architectural drama and a sense of scale to the coastline. From the weathered stones of quiet islands to the sleek silhouettes of modern retreats, these beacons anchor the spring revamps, providing a dramatic backdrop for the community and photographers to gather and capture the peak of the season’s natural beauty.

Scammers seem to follow a cyclical pattern in Second Life: after some weeks of inactivity, suddenly all your groups are flooded with offers that are just too good to be true: “FREE AO! Free for the first fifty people!” Then comes a URL you’re supposed to click in order to grab this incredible offer… and that’s when the scam begins.
As you may know by now, a universal resource locator, better known as a URL, is formed by a domain name and a top-level domain, as in www. example.com. There may also be subdomains, for instance, www.store.example.com. For items in the Marketplace, the standard pattern would be something like this: www.marketplace.secondlife.com/Item_Identifier
Now, how do scammers work? They set up sites with names that look legitimate, but that are actually only there to steal your credentials. For instance, it could be something like this: www.marketplace_secondlife.com or www.marketplace.secondlife.ibg.com
As soon as a URL like this shows up in group chat, everyone rushes to warn the others: “Don’t click that!” Of course you wouldn’t think of clicking it; by now you know better than to fall for the oldest trick in the scammers’ book. And yet, people keep doing it. What would happen if you did click it? Have you ever wondered?
Clicking by itself is not harmful. What can be devastating is what happens next. You land on a page that looks like the Second Life login page. There, you are asked to log in, and if you enter your username and password, that’s it: instead of being directed to a legitimate server, your credentials end up in the scammer’s database. If the scammer is competent—and there’s no reason to think otherwise—the first thing he’ll do is change your password and email address, thereby locking you out of your own account.
What’s the worst that can happen? Well, first of all, you lose access to your account: your avatar, your inventory, your friends, your groups… all of that is gone. Of course, you can create a new account, make new friends, or contact your old ones and explain what happened. You can even rebuild your inventory, at least partially, by repurchasing your favorite items.
But there is another consequence. Your hacked account will be used in the next round of attempts to scam other group members. Yes, the account that posted those “free gifts on Marketplace” is not the scammer’s own account, but one of the hacked and drained accounts he controls.
So chances are that, at some point, your account, your beloved avatar, into which you invested so much time and effort (not to mention money), will be used to peddle false offers in group after group, until someone reports it and has its ass permanently banned. It is also very possible that some of your
friends will see you trying to pull a scam in the very groups you once shared.
I imagine that must feel like one of those zombie movies, where the hero discovers that the creature trying to bite him is none other than his former girlfriend, now turned into a zombie. He still has to kill her, of course, just as your friends will have to report your account for attempted fraud.
And there may be yet another problem, one with real-world consequences, directly affecting your wallet. If you have payment information on file, the scammer will have a field day, purchasing up to the allowed limit of $1,999 (real U.S. dollars), which can then be transferred to one of the many accounts he controls. From there, he can convert the in-game currency back into real money, earning a tidy profit for just a few minutes of work. Since you are locked out from your account, you won’t notice this operation until you check your bank statement. And by then, it may be too late to refute the charges.
As common as they are, Marketplace scams are not the only way hackers can gain access to your online accounts. Just think of your social media, shopping sites, banking apps, and so on. We now live in a world that requires almost constant online activity, and a very large and important part of it is protected by passwords. But how protected are we, really?
According to Surfshark Research, in the second quarter of 2025, the total number of globally breached accounts was around 93.6 million. Are you a user of Facebook? In April 2019, a breach compromised 533 million accounts. Are you also on the platform formerly known as Twitter? It suffered a breach in May 2018, affecting 330 million users. And what about LinkedIn? A more recent breach, in June 2021, affected 700 million users. How safe do you feel now?
If you are like most people, you have a password carefully crafted to thwart any attempt to crack it, right? It might be the year you were born, combined with the name of your childhood pet—something like 1984Rusty. Totally unassailable, isn’t it? After all, how could a hacker know that the puppy your dad gave you for your sixth birthday was named Rusty?
And again, if you are like most people, you use that same password on every platform, app, or site that requires you to log in. There’s no need to burden
your brain by memorizing dozens of complex character strings, right? But while your neurons may thank you, this also means that if your credentials are compromised—for example, in a data breach—then all your other accounts are at risk.
For me, this picture was alarming enough to take action to protect my online life, starting with my account in Second Life. To do so, I logged in to the official website and, from my account home page, selected “Multi-Factor Authentication” (in the lefthand column). This took me to a page that clearly explains the process. At the bottom, there is a simple button labeled “Get Started”; all you have to do is click it and follow the prompts.
Well, it's not quite that simple. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) works through an app on your mobile device, such as Google Authenticator. Once installed, you link it to your account by scanning a QR code. The next time you log in to Second Life, you will be asked for a verification code generated by the app, a six-digit number that changes every few seconds. Enter it, and you’re in.
You won’t be asked for a new code every time unless something changes, your location, for instance. And that’s how your account is protected: even if a hacker has your username and password, the system will detect that the login attempt is from a different location and will require a verification code. Since that code can only be generated on your phone, the attacker won’t be able to access your account.
But what if you lose your phone? In that case, you can use the “backup codes” generated by the service during setup. The best way to handle these codes is to write them down and store them in a safe place. Better yet, keep a physical notebook where you record those codes as well as the passwords for your different accounts. And yes, use a different password for each site, even if that means you’ll need a bigger notebook.

Walk into Nola’s Notions and the first thing you notice isn’t a product. It’s a feeling. Fountains whisper into stone bowls. Trees wear butterflies like jewelry.
On a display wall, a parade of fairies—sixty at least—perches on swings and drift mid-room, as if gravity filed for vacation. Overhead, a Christmas village hangs like a private constellation. “Zoom

He used to stop by and point out crooked wall hangings. She laughed. The arrangement stuck—she composes, he calibrates.

This is Nola Hellershanks’ world—built over sixteen years, sustained by imagination, and refined by hustle. The sign reads “Nola’s Notions,” but functionally it’s a studio, a gallery, and a memoir in miniatures. She’ll tell you her best work is fantasy décor. Understatement. She’s a specialist in wonder: floating fairies, seasonal sets, home-and-office pieces made with a careful hand and a maker’s pride.
Some she builds from the ground up. Others she textures and tunes into one-of-a-kind pieces. The rule is simple: keep it different. “People come here because it’s unique,” says Nola. “Most of the things in my store you will not find in other stores.
Origin story? Two sparks. First, she was a model for in-world jewelry icon Yula Finesmith— who nudged her to open a shop. Second, encouragement from creator Phaylen Fairchild.
Add a childhood of retail (her father ran a sporting goods store), plus business management studies, and a knack for people -the ingredients were there.
. “I have always worked with the public” she recalls. Such RL experience in retail sales, customer service, and product production, transferred from RL to SL.
The recipe came later. And then, the turn. Nola arrived in this world after a brain aneurysm—a sentence that lands like a dropped plate. She doesn’t flinch telling it.
“It had exploded in my head,” she says. “I am an odd living one as they put it.” Second Life wasn’t just a diversion; it was scaffolding. A place to rebuild.
“Knowing I was not the only one facing challenge, mattered,” she says. So did friendships. So did purpose. Eventually, so did income.
When she learned she could earn real money as a single parent, the store became a lifeline. It helped cover her daughter’s college.
Nola doesn’t stop at one lane. She runs Fifty5 Thursday—a weekly sale she helped pioneer. Designers and builders send their notecards; she curates, blogs, publishes. It used to field sixty-plus
contributors; competition’s clipped the total lately. Retail’s like weather—sun, cloud, repeat. She adapts.
For her sales, Halloween and Christmas bring the storm surge. Spring coasts. Summer simmers. She works about eight-plus hours a day, tests on the beta grid, and keeps a full-perm line for fellow creators.
The technical bits stay under wraps; the fingerprints don’t. If something moves right or looks right, odds are they had a hand in it. On the sales floor, the show goes on.
Fairies—collectible, beloved—line up like postcards from an enchanted zip code. A Mardi Gras fairy winks from a corner. A Christmas village, so detailed a Linden bought it, hovers above. You could spend an hour here and still miss details a thumbnail later reveals. That’s Nola’s signature: whole scenes that dazzle from ten feet, and tiny decisions that matter at ten inches.
Most of what you see here you won’t see anywhere else.
There’s a subplot: breedables. Once upon a turtle, Nola and Levi met through a digital pet project. Today, they consult on new lines on the development and testing side, with texture work in the mix.
Ask about tomorrow and she’s practical. More full-perm offerings may be on the horizon. The market shifts; so will she. But the center holds. Keep it unique. Keep it beautiful. Keep going.
And so she does. Walking out of this cyber wonderland we weave through the various categories, including Outdoors, Trees, Fountains, fantasies

“Thank you and have a wonderful memory filled day,” says Nola, to visitors. Indeed, a memory filled day is here as a whimsical world awaits.

In RL I live not far from a national cemetery.
This doesn’t mean much. There are, after all, one hundred and seventy of them across the United States. Occasionally, I go to visit men with whom I never served. More importantly, I will occasionally visit those with whom I did.
I notice Second Life has a paucity of military memorials. Oh, there are 12 sims, to include the Linden Memorial Park, where you can dedicate flowers or candles to someone you miss. There are places with memorials “Remember those who passed on". There are regions displaying many memorial gardens, mausoleums, dedicated benches, shrines, even a Candle Beach you can customize and float a candle into the ocean.
Since about 2009, Groundskeeper Linden has been processing memorial request tickets submitted via the support portal.
But this isn’t what I mean. I mean dedicated military memorials. An SL Arlington. An SL Golden Gate National cemetery.
Recently, after a business trip and on an unseasonably warm day, I stopped at a gas station to begin the hour and a half drive home. I stopped to fill the tank, and in a surprisingly clean gas station bathroom, exchanged the suit and tie for flip flops, jeans, and a surgical scrub shirt from where I have long forgotten I got it.
The ragtop down, gas station ray bans, and a ball cap, and I was on my way; thankful I no longer looked liked the others on the road: the suits, the ties, the Teslas. I felt like like me.
I arrived at the cemetery and there he was. I don’t cry anymore. I miss him to be sure. Every day.
I expect he’ll be waiting for me, when I arrive at Fiddler’s Green. He will be standing there with my stetson, spurs, and a box of his malodorous Cuban cigars. We’ll sit down with a bottle of Bushmill’s and he’ll look at me and shake his head again. “What in hell made you do THAT?”
But I never found that in SL until now. At

one will find ECHO Group/Band of Brothers. ECHO stands for Encouraging Camaraderie and Honoring Outreach. This is a real-life veteran's non-profit organization with a growing significant presence in of Second Life. Their mission is to support veterans and their families through camaraderie, peer support, and resource navigation.
The group's virtual chapter operates across two regions and serves as a Gateway for new residents to learn how to navigate the platform.
Among the services available?
Veteran Assistance that assists with VA claims, DIC, and other benefits. They offer live classes on PTSD and Suicide Awareness Training, as well as group camaraderie sessions and club events at Club
Echo. They offer live classes on PTSD and Suicide Awareness Training, as well as group camaraderie sessions and club events at Club Echo. The sim includes gardens, a farm, and a popular aquarium designed as safe spaces for veterans to socialize at their own pace.
Those physical services include a Billiards Program that offers veterans a space to reconnect through friendly competition, led by Executive VP Robert Raymond. The organization also supports softball teams, motorcycle riders, and various community outreach efforts.
The main region features the only Armed Forces Museum Experience in Second Life.
There is also, very unusually for inworld organization, a very real outworld connection. They have active physical chapters in Arizona (Lake Havasu City) and California (Santa Maria).
Perhaps most importantly, there are regular regular Zoom-based Battle Mind Classes to support active duty, veterans, and their families.

I spoke to him, then. I told him of what I had done with my life since his passing. And wondering what his comment might be for the attire of a man my age.
In my pocket sat my talismans: the dog tags I wore my first deployment, the plastic rosary I also received that tour. And the long unused Zippo I had been told no Soldier went without. A gift, dented, scratched, but just as beautiful as the day it was given me.
And so there I stood as looked at his tombstone. I carefully set down the penny, the dime, and, finally, the quarter.
I’d love, one day, to see the name of all of our fallen in SL.
But I’m glad to see that there is someone here support those left behind.

My colourful paintings depict a combination of the meaning of a word and the play of shapes and lines in structures.------
Like most people, I regularly think about life's questions. I collect special words from all kinds of languages about this. They inspire me to paint. It also works the other way around: sometimes I have to paint because of something that is in my head. My 'KOPFKINO'. Then I find a word that fits it.
I get my inspiration from nature, from structures, in museums and from artists. I prefer to paint abstractly. Sometimes abstracted land/seascapes or figurative work. I paint with acrylic and often use structural material. In choosing color and in creating the composition, I work intuitively. Not only though, because the play of lines and shapes in structures fascinates me immensely. The combination of word and structure sets off a creative process.
For me, painting is also a way to deal with the everydayness of existence. To literally and figuratively add color to the day. Something we can all use.
