And you laughed that day when Mr. O’Shea, your English teacher, tried to make you learn the word “labyrinthine”. You never thought that one day you would need that word to describe your surroundings. The topic was “The Jungle,” by Upton Sinclair, and you were shamelessly dozing by the time he read: “… and then a long row of smaller
buildings, with narrow alleys and passages between them, labyrinthine passages that seemed to defy a breath of fresh air”.
If you knew that “labyrinthine” is related to “labyrinth,” you could have a better understanding of your current environment. But you weren't paying attention either when Miss Othmar was explaining the Greek myth of Daedalus. Sure, if factual history is boring and you don't feel the need to know about the Peloponnesian War, which really took place, who would want to learn about made-up stories?
Oh, the golden years of high school! You elevated skipping classes to a new form of art, celebrated by your fellow classmates, always finding new reasons and pretexts. You skipped Señor Guillermo's Spanish classes because you thought Florida was a better destination for Spring Break than Cancun, and that
you swore never to learn a language with grammatical genders. And what about Ms. Higgingbottom's Greek lessons? Forget it. You'd never get even close to a language with five grammatical cases. After all, if foreigners want to talk with you, they can always learn English.
Well, that's too bad, because now you find yourself trapped inside a labyrinth—a network of tightly interwoven alleys apparently leading nowhere— without even knowing the word for it.
I have to admit, for a person as contemptuous of foreign cultures as you are, the fact that you recognized the characters posted all around as Chinese is a big accomplishment. And that's why I'll let you in on a little secret: you are at Kowloon's Gate. Now, that does ring a bell, doesn't it?
How does it feel to be inside a video game? Because, of course you know Kowloon's Gate as a niche video game for the original PlayStation which, although not very successful in its early years, eventually developed a loyal fan base. So much so that in 2007, some of the former developers created this sim in Second Life. The sim—and the game—is based on Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong. And we all know what happened there. Officially, the place belonged to China, yet it sat inside British Hong Kong like a jurisdictional anomaly nobody really wanted to touch. It was a largely lawless and densely populated area under the control of the local triad gangs, which traded in all sorts of banned products, with a thriving economy based on gambling, prostitution, and drugs. Just your kind of place, right?
Well, all of that is gone by now. The British colonial government ordered its demolition, which was completed in 1994, not before the creators of the game had the chance to visit the place for inspiration. In the game, the player's mission is to restore the balance between Yin and Yang. To that effect,

the player must collect the Four Symbols, those mythological creatures associated with the Chinese constellations along the ecliptic, and viewed as the guardians of the four cardinal directions. They are the Azure Dragon of the East, the Vermilion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West, and the Black Turtle-Snake (also called "Black Warrior") of the North.
The restoration of the balance is achieved through a Feng Shui Battle, which is one of the activities in which you can participate in the sim. You can also complete several quests, although these may seem more modest and won't involve these formidable creatures. Instead, you are asked to deliver messages from one store owner to another, to pick up the shrimp scattered around the wig store, or to become a robot and deliver luggage to the Elderly Center. It doesn't sound very heroic, I know, but at least you get a gift when you complete them.
So now you know. You skipped your classes in high school, but never missed the weekend gaming marathons that your friend Paulie organized in his parents' basement. How your pals secured a copy of Kowloon's Gate was part of its attraction: nobody knew and it was a mystery. Since it was released only for the Japanese market, nobody could explain how one day it appeared in the drawer where Paulie kept all his games.
But enough history. What you really want now is to roam the city, complete your quests, take part in the battles, and maybe become a permanent resident here, in one of the numerous dwellings that are for rent. Hi there, hallo, bonjour!
I have been an artist most of my life. I first began with finger painting at the age of 3. From then on, I was always drawing & painting something. My mother worked in an office. I would go around drawing Orca whales for everyone in the department. They hung a huge collage of my drawings up on the wall, at the end of the year. This gave me the confidence to keep making art.
Growing up a lot of creativity is stifled in schools. My family never had the money to put me in art classes etc. I was naturally "drawn" to color and creating pictures from my imagination. I started to see, growing up,that my talent was special. Not everyone could draw! Not everyone could paint! This helped me to see that what I have is a gift from God.
When I met my husband and fell in love. I started college. I earned my degree in Fine Art Painting and all on scholarships. I am the first in my family to earn a college degree. My grandmother worked in factories, my aunts worked in offices, and mother, and so on. I always find it so odd that nobody else in my family could draw or paint. This is why I call it my gift from God.
All of my paintings are impressionistic and plein'air in style. My most serious work are portraits and landscaping. Oil paintings are my first love, but acrylic became my go too over the years. drying time is faster etc. Having a disability has caused many upsets and lots of pain. For some time, I abandoned my painting. But now I see I should be pouring it all back on the canvas. I won't paint the same way again but now I am free! You can paint again too! Just say no to fear, pray, and jump right back in!
Second Life gives me the best opportunities here to make more art! I love SL and the communities here that lift people up and give us all hope for a better future.
