tepping into a winter-themed home this month is about more than just escaping the lag of a busy sim; it’s an invitation to embrace winter. In January, we trade the cluttered kitsch of December for a palette of frost-bitten blues, warm creams, and raw timber. It is the season of the "slow life" where the centerpiece of a home shifts from a towering decorated tree to a roaring fireplace and a pile of high-quality mesh blankets. Whether you’re decorating a skybox or transforming a mainland plot into a snow-dusted retreat, now is the time to lean into the chill.

If there is one structure that defines this "modern rustic" aesthetic, it is the Adza Log Cabin by Trompe Loeil. Unlike traditional builds that can feel heavy or dark, the Adza balances rugged textures with expansive glass—double-glazed, of course!—allowing you to feel immersed in the landscape without catching a virtual chill.

Drawing from the serene simplicity of Nordic design, I kept the interior styling "intentional" to create a quiet sanctuary. The aesthetic is anchored in light-toned woods and muted colors to keep the space feeling airy, while layers of plush textures from Nutmeg and Zaker soften the clean lines. By carefully curating pieces from CHEZ MOI and KAZZA, I found a perfect balance of functional elegance and comfort. To complete the look, I integrated thoughtful accents from {what next} and SimpleThings, adding those final, tactile layers—like chunky knits and soft fabrics—that transform a minimalist house into a lived-in home.

Beyond the walls of the cabin, the exterior landscape plays a vital role in grounding the home within its wintry environment. To bridge the gap between the architecture and the elements, I incorporated the Birgit Rustic Hot Tub + Snow from Trompe Loeil, which serves as a cozy, steaming focal point against the frost.

The natural silhouette of the land was further enhanced with various seasonal trees from Little Branch and Heart, creating a lush, snow-laden perimeter that feels organic and secluded. However, the true cohesion of the build came together thanks to my neighbor, Gonzo Tigerfish. He was instrumental in adding the winding paths and sturdy fences that tie the entire property together, ensuring that every piece—from the hot tub to the furthest treeline—feels like a deliberate part of a unified landscape.

T
he night is good at The Secret Life Lounge. It usually is. Second Life’s entertainment dance venue thrives with good times, lively chatter and games shared by friends old and new. At the epicenter of tonight’s gig is Letzgo Parkin -D.J., music historian, and trivia commando. He is also modest. “You sure you want me for a story?,” Letz inquires, upon being approached for an interview.

He would give her biography and explain the individual Pips. “My approach to DJing is different from most others,” he explains. “You won’t usually see me on a stage or in a D.J. booth. I am on the floor, part of the party. I am a friend playing music for my friends, like I did on my back porch in my real life childhood.” He recalls, “As a teenager I had a low out-put transmitter under the wattage that is required on an FCC license. I broadcasted to the neighborhood which was about a half-dozen houses Fast-forward to today. Most audience members are on a first name basis with him and each other. New arrivals leave as friends too. He gives credit to his team. “Cara is my long time hostess.,” he says about his gig assistant and longtime friend. “We work as one,” he notes. “We both do our jobs while trying to make each other better.” Letz adds, “We put our egos aside. I entertain any of her ideas about themes and music content.”
He adds, “In the SL DJ world. I am small potatoes.” Small potatoes maybe, but like potatoes, he has a – peel. Unlike other, perhaps more famous ‘potatoes,’ DJs, Letz has been doing this for decades. Within 20 years he has owned 6 clubs and has played tunes, almost since joining the cyberworld back in 2008. He makes it look easy. It is not. Don’t try this at home. A good DJ is more than a shouting sentinel proclaiming whatever song is next in the que list. Heck A.I. can do that, and for some, it soon will. But not with Letz. The audience appreciates his research and ability to recall facts and statistics about almost every tune he plays. For example, if Letz introduced ‘Midnight Train to Georgia.’ Before the song ended you would know L E T Z G O PA R K I N - D. J
Cara notes about her SL occupation, “Hosting alongside Letz is a joy. As a musician himself, he has developed a deep knowledge of music and artists which elevates every event, and his friendly, engaging style turns each gathering into a genuinely fun experience.” The duo works to read the room and work the crowd. Each audience has a unique personality and mood. A good DJ has to ‘land on his feet’ during the first 20 minutes of the gig to know what the audience wants and how it feels. Letz rocks it. His partner, Chili, who often hosts in Cara’s absence, explains her SL guy. “Coming from a music background myself, I see how Letz approaches his DJing with the same eye as the musician he is. He plays for the crowd’s enjoyment in order to receive that energy back. His music sets the tone for the event.”

He also spends almost as much time behind the scenes as he does in the gig. “I am always thinking of new event themes that I have never seen before. You can only do ‘Leather and Lace’ so many times.” He adds “I keep a notepad and pen by my nightstand. Many ideas come to me in a state of being half awake. I write those revelations down and fall back asleep and forget them,” he laughs. His favorite musical genre is classic rock. He spins such tunes with weekly gig themes ranging from country western, to 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s music. He DJs at Secret Life on Wednesdays at 5-7pm, Thursdays at 12-2pm, and Fridays, 5-7 pm. All are on SL time. “I’ve known DJ Letz all my SL time and when we opened the club [Secret Life],” recalls owner, Kywoo Rae. “We immediately invited him. He’s been a member and DJ of our club for all 10 years and I think that says a lot about him and our respect for him and his work. He’s a great connoisseur of music and the history of bands and songs, so his sets are always interesting.” With the interview concluded, Letz begins tonight’s gig, sound check is good, people are already dropping in, and the playlist will soon be activated. For Letz, it’s another day, another gig, and another good time, as the hits just keep on coming.

THAT THING THAT WE DO LIVING AND LOVING IN SECOND LIFE Coco St. George
I
f you have been in Second Life for some time, chances are that you’ve been asked what you can do “in the game.” And, by the way, you likely responded that Second Life “is not a game.” Luckily for you, they never follow up with the obvious question, “If it’s not a game, then what is it?”, because you probably would be hard-pressed to answer that.
For some SL residents, especially those with backgrounds in the gaming community, Second Life might be something like Minecraft, only with better-looking characters. If they come from Grand Theft Auto, they might wonder what their mission is, although they certainly will be happy about the more amenable hookers. In Second Life there is no military campaign to complete, no princess to rescue, no galaxy to save… so, what do we do, then? The answer to that question will vary from one person to another, ranging from “Hanging around with my friends” to the more elaborate answers some creators could give, like building houses, creating airplanes, designing clothes, or scripting gadgets.

Some mission-driven residents set themselves the goal of avoiding any expense of real money in the game. You certainly have seen them: they are those asking about ways to earn lindens. They usually ask in help groups, but you may find them also asking around at stores, clubs, and other places with heavy traffic. Such residents tend to consider the “No Payment Info On File” tag in their profiles a badge of honor and all their efforts are directed to getting all their resources, especially financial, from within the game. Thus, they tend to lose interest very quickly, once they discover that the standard answer to their question is almost identical every time: “Buy lindens with your RL credit card.” Since that contradicts their selfassigned mission, they eventually admit defeat and abandon the game. At this point, please allow me to offer my two cents to this never-ending debate. Some people say Second Life has become “super expensive”, citing that as a reason why “the game is dying.” While it is true that paying is one sure way of enjoying Second Life, that doesn’t mean that we need to pay through our noses to have fun. Besides, a paywall does not stop the millions of gamers from playing rigidly structured games such as Final Fantasy, where you need to pay a monthly subscription even after you purchased the game. Of course, they might also find well-intended people who actually give them tips to earn lindens, like creating something and sell it. But, what can a oneweek avatar create in this world? They are well advised to take curses at one of the several places devoted to teach such skills as building and scripting, which eventually may lead to a lucrative career as creators. But the learning curve may seem daunting to many of them and, besides, there is no guarantee their products will earn them enough lindens to buy that coveted mesh body, not to mention the highly

desirable mesh head that would be the perfect complement of anyone’s outfit. Of course, there are other sources of income in Second Life. One of them is specially attractive for those lacking the skills to create and sell products, but who are endowed with a personable and outgoing personality that may open doors for them into the show business. This refers mainly to dance clubs, a vital sector in Second Life’s economy where DJs, hostesses and dancers can make a very decent living thanks to the patrons’ tips. Remember that crowd that logs in every day just to “hang out and chat with their friends”? Well, they usually hang out at such places, where they chat with their old chums and meet new ones.
Sadly, not everyone is capable of being in the mood for a party on demand. Djs, hostesses, and dancers work fixed schedules, which may or may not match their current moods. They are called performers for a reason: whatever their mood in real life might be, they have to act joyful, funny, and willing to party like there is no tomorrow during their gigs, which usually last two hours. Needless to say, it is that performance what the patrons reward via the tip jars strategically and conveniently located at the venue. But that professional path may not be open for everybody. What do you do if you don’t have the skills to produce goods for sale, nor a personality that can party at any time of the day (or the night, remember those pesky time zones!)? At this point, and lacking a structured road map that could guide them, is when many players concede defeat, try to cut their losses, and quit for good. THAT THING THAT WE D O
However, some of these residents may keep playing if in the meantime they discover the generosity of some stores that give away top-notch products to their groups’ members; that way they manage to put together a very decent-looking avatar that won’t make people turn up their noses. And from that point on, once they leave behind the obsession to earn lindens in order to purchase things that supposedly will make their life better—a betterlooking avatar, a bigger home, fancier clothes—they might find the true purpose of logging into Second Life: chatting with your old friends and making new ones, discovering the wonders created by other residents, and sure, why not, engaging in role play of their own creation, as structured as they want them to be, pretending they are vampires, merfolk, elves, or whichever creature they might fancy. In short, much like in real life, in Second Life there is no other purpose but to find our own purpose in it.

WHERE LIGHT REMAINS Ukrainian Landscapes of Memory and Continuity Where Light Remains is a cycle of eight paintings rooted in Ukrainian cultural symbolism and articulated through contemporary lyrical abstraction and poetic landscape. The exhibition unfolds as a visual journey — from intimate symbols of remembrance to expansive spaces of reflection and openness. Poppies appear as carriers of memory and quiet mourning; sunflowers rise as emblems of resilience, dignity, and collective orientation toward light. The recurring presence of the sun functions not as a natural phenomenon, but as an inner axis — a source of continuity embedded within land, water, and sky. Fields, steppe, rivers, and horizons are not treated as scenery. They are witnesses. The land remembers. Water reflects. Light persists. Rejecting monumental pathos and direct narration, the artist chooses restraint and attentiveness. These paintings speak softly, yet insist on presence. They portray endurance not as resistance alone, but as care, patience, and connection across time. While deeply grounded in Ukrainian landscapes and symbolic language, the cycle gradually opens into a universal space — suggesting that memory, once carried, extends beyond geography. The final works do not conclude the story; they release it. This exhibition does not ask what has been lost. It asks what remains — and how it is held.
