It is October in Second Life, and that means autumn is well underway; we are getting ready for spooks, ghouls, and things that go bump in the night.

However, before you don the scars and witches’ hats or start up the chainsaw, make sure you go and visit one of the stunning autumn-themed sims that I am sharing with you today. I am spotlightingseven sims that will have you reaching for the hiking shoes and leaving your SL home with your camera in hand.

I have spent days combing the SL landscape for the most picturesque, photo-ready sims that are just waiting for you to come and wander among the colourful trees, tiptoe through the pumpkin patches, and sit awhile in a leaf-strewn courtyard. So, pack up a picnic, grab your pumpkin-spiced latte, and let’s go touring.

Autumn in Sonder - “In Sonder, Autumn is not merely a season; it’s a breathtaking tapestry of color, flavors, and traditions that binds our cozy community together.” Grab a bike, and let’s enjoy all of the sights that this sim has to offer. Try a beer in the brewery, wander the stores, or peruse the Farmer’s Market before sitting in the fall sun and enjoying a coffee.

Ethereal City - “Seasonal region with elegant romantic exploration spots.” This is a great sim to take a date for a romantic stroll through the park, dinner at a cafe, or some rooftop dancing. You could even take a tour of the city on the train or the pumpkin cart. There are so many places here to get that perfect, picturesque photo with the person you love.

Love Valley - “A destination created for you to enjoy and to take pictures. Bring your lover, friends, or meet new friends at cozy places created for you. Visit us today, and get the fall season feelings.”

Love Valley Autumn is just the place if you love the oranges, yellows, and reds of autumn. There are so many places to enjoy on this sim and plenty of surprises along the way.

Missing Melody - “What is a Missing Melody? It’s that song in your head that you can’t get out but not sure how it really goes.” Missing Melody in the fall is a place you will want to visit over and over just to find all the beautiful sights and spots it has to offer. Find a seat in the gazebo, grab a coffee in the cafe, or just take your time wandering through the trees, taking in all that this sim has to offer.

Shades of Autumn - “Shades of Autumn on Enchanted Remnants is a beautiful and peaceful spot for wanderers and photographers. The calm surroundings celebrate the magical beauty of nature amidst lovely old ruins.” This sim has plenty of wide-open fields filled with flowers that just call to be run through while singing majestically. Explore the castle ruins, hunt for the fairy circles, or just sit and take in the autumnal beauty.

Silver Moon - “Somewhere deep in the Forest, mornings are filled with a slight mist and the quiet singing of birds. Light of the sun fills the shadows in the trees. Life begins a new day.” Borrow a horse at the TP point and then enjoy the ride from the stables to the Waterside or Cliffside trails, down to the boat dock, and past some of the best camping spots in SL. You could even tie up the horse for a bit and try a spot of hang gliding if you dare!

Experienced real-life anglers claim one of the good things about fishing is that fish can’t tell time. They will bite a hook 24/7, which is good for Second Lifers because we can’t tell time either.

Clock impairment explains the scene laid before us this morning at 2 a.m. SLT. Happy fisher people are baiting hooks, casting rods, and reeling in the big ones— and the occasional shrimp, as well. Not to laugh at diminutive crustaceans, for even shrimp are called “Jumbo.”

All of this and more await visitors to Second Life’s fishing holes: various ponds, lakes, and the ocean. Lorke and Lottie’s site, Fishbone, is one such place.

Flying lines and hooks zing through the air as competitive fishers cast for prize-winning fish of fortune. The clicking sound of a line being reeled

back in for another cast is familiar to all who have ever fished, and that’s most of us.

But the beauty of SL fishing is we all have the same skills. There are those who come from the real world with mounted marlins on office walls. There are also those who couldn’t catch a goldish in a medicine bottle.

People fish in SL much as they do in RL, for fun, relaxation, and socializing. “This is a great place to meet and make new friends,” says Lottie, who operates Fishbone, where life is good and the fish are easy, alongside her partner Loke Lodbrok. “Lots of folks are here to get to know each other.”

One such fisher is Serenity. “I am here a lot,” she says. “I usually make every competition Fishbone has. This is a chance to make friends while having fun in an outdoor sport / social setting.”

It is all fun and games until competition time. “Make no mistake,” cautions Loke with a laugh. “There is no love between anglers when it’s competition time.”

Lottie agrees and smiles; “Yes, but that’s in a good way.”

Unlike RL fishing, Second Life’s version requires little talent. Bait-casting regular Jady agrees, explaining the number of skills required for SL fishing: “Not a damn one.” She laughs. “Unless you consider looking good while you fish.”

Jady continues, “There is a rod you attach. There is a HUD. You literally type ‘bait’ and click to cast. After you catch a fish, click the cast button on the HUD to continue fishing. That’s it.”

Unlike RL, Second Life’s version gives great prizes beyond fish. Most are here for the competition. The driver of SL fishing, the company that baits and beholds, is the North Company, creator of Northern Operations Sport Fishing Game. The system is fully stand-alone, with everything built into the rod.

The more a fish weighs, the better score the fisher has in the competition. For example, a tiny Finding Elmo itty bitty aquatic creature has far less value than a moray eel that can weigh up to 20 pounds. Or you can get really lucky and catch a swordfish, shark, or barracuda that weighs up to 100 pounds.

The winners scores and weights are tabulated on a screen near the fishing waters. Also handy is a bar where losers can drown their sorrows or, most likely, laugh it up with the winners.

Near the score board, trophies are displayed. Some lucky fisherman or fisherwoman may take one home.

“It’s an eel! You got an eel! an excited angler shouts to the other, as a slithering snake like creature, is plucked from the briny depths. Too bad that was just practice. “Three minutes everybody!” Lottie says, about the countdown to start.

Late arrivals vie for position. Most people here are on a first name basis.

Nine am SLT. “Let’s do this! Good luck everyone!” says Lorke. Zing! Zing! Zing! lines shoot out as bait splashes. Lorke and Lottie call the play-byplay. “Nice fish!,” the co-hostess says, offering encouragement.

Pros are competitive. Others are not as professional, like the lady shouting, “Here fishy fishy!”

And another day in SL fishing is underway. Anglers weigh their catches. Cyber fish are captured. If only we had tartar sauce.

Fishbone has two competitions a week. Each lasts an hour, Monday and Friday, 9 am. On average, 18 to 20 fishers will cast lines per competition. The day of the week does not matter for crowds. Fishbone is open 24/7 for everyone to use whenever they want.

Loke fishes in RL. Lottie does not. “I’m not sure which one of us thought of an SL fishing site,” recalls Loke. “I think it was both of us.” Lottie adds, “We both enjoy it. It’s just a fun community.”

And then comes the Friday competition. Anglers maneuver for the best spot as bait is examined,

You enter the hall as if you owned it. And why shouldn’t you? Your outfit is the perfect attire for the venue, you bought new hair just for this occasion, and your lips flash a perfect smile as you assess the looks of envy and admiration the people in the room are giving you. Suddenly, you realize that, for some of them, you may appear as an orange cloud. The simple thought that all your efforts to look dazzling may be thwarted by something as despicable as that makes you shudder, but nevertheless, you go ahead and take your rightful place at the roulette table.

There is also a non-denominational chapel suitable to host your wedding, regardless of your religious orientation.

So, now that you are poised for a great night out, you may want to know your options. Are you in a gambling mood? Then you came to the right place. The Rose Lounge offers a roulette table that can satisfy all your gambling needs. Roulette appeared in the late 18th century and soon conquered the center stage of casinos and other gambling places. It owes its name to the French, with the phrase translating to “little wheel,” because it is actually a wheel that spins. The wheel holds a little ball that may land in any of the 37 or 38 numbers (depending on whether it is the European or American version) when it stops spinning. And that number and its color are the happy winners. That’s all. And, yes, of course, people bet on which number and color the ball will select.

Many a fortune has been lost to gambling, and the halls of casinos are littered with tragic stories of people who caved to the temptation of betting more than they could afford in hopes of making up for past losses. But gambling does not necessarily have to be tragic. In fact, it is pretty fun, especially if you do it in Second Life with free money, taking no risks of losing your hard-earned lindens. Go ahead: click the table, wear the HUD you’ll be given, and start betting on your favorite numbers!

But before we continue, I suppose a few words to set the scene are in order. You find yourself at Angel Manor, a cultural mecca created in 2007 to offer SL residents a place to escape and rest their souls in a world of creativity and grand splendor. The estate

number of a deck of cards, a wealth of wisdom and forgotten lore is hidden. That’s why card readers can see your future by examining the cards they deal you. You may believe this or not, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a good game of cards.

Unlike roulette, which you can play by yourself, you need at least two more friends to play Hearts. So, TP your besties and start piling up those chips. Here, too, you’ll be given a HUD upon sitting at the table that will guide you through the game.

You can likewise try your skills at the billiards table or a dart board. There are also boards for chess and checkers if you fancy something brainier.

This place is the seat of the Second Life International Symphony Orchestra. After all the wonders you have seen around here, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it certainly adds a new reason to come and visit.

In their own words, “SL ISO performed its first concert in Second Life on August 28th, 2022. The orchestra members are volunteering actor-avatars who like to attend a musical journey and add their contributions as a resident of Second Life and definitely music lovers.

“As a part of repertoires and concerts featuring symphonic works and backing tracks (No classical music specifically required), SL ISO aims to provide a realistic ambiance to the audience by creating a real-life concert type experience and atmosphere, as well as providing a visual and aural feast for Second Life music lovers.”

The orchestra performs a concert once a month, and if you want to be updated about their activities, you may want to join the group. The orchestra also has its own magazine, called Score, to inform more broadly about what they do and who their members are. You can pick up the latest issue at the entrance of the Rose Lounge.

Sip a drink at the lounge, hit the dance floor, or simply go wandering around this wonderful building, where you’ll also find a tennis court, a dance studio, a bowling alley, a meditation garden, a spa, and a golf course, among many other amenities. If you come, don’t forget to join the group to keep updated with all the amazing activities you’ll find here.

In 2017, Minnie Blanco (Minnie Atlass) created a region with the vision of providing a “beautiful region for everyone to hang out and enjoy, whilst offering a wonderful place to live.”

Almost seven years later, there are now seven regions (all with different themes), as well as the Soul2Soul Architecture and Decor store which offers loads of quality handcrafted items, all “unique and fresh”.

Minnie also offers a landscaping and design service which has plenty of very satisfied customers. Minnie’s schedule is full of people who want their sims and regions to have that special touch. They are happy to provide customers with “high-quality services in landscaping and sim design, outdoor decor, and interior design.”

One of the regions that shows off the beauty and creativity of Minnie’s artistic flair is Soul2Soul Mediterranean. “Nestled in the Italian Riviera coastline lies Portofino, originally a fishing village with its small cobbled square overlooking its picturesque harbour with panoramic views. These days, it’s home to celebrities and artists. Inspired by this area is a stunning public double region, with limited private rental homes— many custom-built snuggled into the hillside.”

This region is a photographer’s dream, with loads of hidden gems for getting that perfect Mediterranean shot. The area has it all: sun, sea, beaches, cafes, architecture, and so much colour in the buildings and landscaping.

It is the perfect place to visit, with loads of places to sit and enjoy the ambiance, swim, laze on a beach, or find your new home where you will get to enjoy the vista every day.

The store is also a place to visit and find everything you will need to decorate your home. And, if you don’t have a home, Soul2Soul also has those, too.

It is a one-stop shop with all of your architecture, decor, and furniture needs in one place. The store itself is also a fabulous piece of architecture and definitely a place to while away an afternoon!

They say that in our lives, the only constant thing is change. But with change comes chaos. We, as human beings, manage chaos in a number of ways. One such method is organization. People have different systems in keeping things organized. Popular tools that individuals use when organizing things are labels. Recently, labels have become a point of discussion for many. Why? In one camp, the thought is that you can only possess traits that don’t contradict each other. For example, let’s say that if you are a musician, they feel that you can’t also be a doctor. How come? There have been studies done that show persons who favor certain interests tend to use the side of the brain that enables them to have a desire in them, only. On the other hand, this same camp feels that everyone can use their minds fully. There have been many instances where humans have pursued passions of opposite attributes. I think now would be a good time to introduce you to a woman who some may say is a full-fledged member of group one. Of course, others might think that she actually belongs to clan number two. Let’s get to know her, and then you can tell me what you think, okay?

Magissa Denver became a resident of Second Life on July 3rd, 2009. Like most of us when we first joined SL, she struggled to learn how to enjoy it to its fullest. This process was made extra difficult for her as she did not know how to communicate effectively; at the time, she mainly only knew Greek, and Second Life’s primary language is English, as its headquarters are based in California, U.S.A. Some would use this hindrance as an excuse to never return to SL again. Magissa, however, turned this roadblock into an educational moment and has since been climbing the ladder to the stars.

During or after the acclamation period of Second Life, folks tend to try out everything that SL has to offer, in order to see where they would like to dedicate their time. Magissa fell in love with photography and designing. I can attest that creating and taking

pictures are two fun activities, as I do them myself. Photography and designing allow one to express themselves, experiment, and honor others.

Did you know that, like in Real Life, most hobbies and skills in Second Life can be turned into a business? What about combining SL and RL pastimes and qualifications together to form two different companies? One in Real Life and the other in Second Life. Of course, those with passion and ambition are the ones who will have successful businesses. Take Magissa, for example: she put in the hard work to learn not only the crafts of photography and designing but also the credentials that she needed in order to be a successful entrepreneur.

The question that I feel as though most people who have not had their own business in either often wonder whether it might be cheaper and easier to do so in one over the other. I don’t know the answer to that inquiry, as I don’t own a company in Real Life and am just now seriously trying to start one in Second Life. Having said all of that, if I had to take a guess as to what the response would be, I would think that it would be more frugal and simpler to start one in SL versus RL. It seems to me that the startup costs for opening a business in Second Life are a lot less than they are in Real Life. Of course, the type of company that one begins will dictate how much will need to be spent in order to open it. But, it still seems that it is more expensive to set up a business in RL.

Magissa Denver has had to overcome a lot in order to become the boss that she is today. She believes that anyone can be just like her as long as they put in the work, but she also pointed out that one should not be afraid to seek out help when they need it. This is a good reminder for us all, corporate-wise or not.

So, there you have it, a tale about a prosperous gal and the guidance to help you become successful, too, sprinkled with something to ponder about.

THIS IS YOUR SL LIFE ROCK YOUR RACK 2023

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women. 13% of women, and an ever increasing percentage of men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. There is currently no known cure for breast cancer, and its early diagnosis is critical to survival. Therefore it’s critical that early detection be an option for everyone.

Rock Your Rack, the annual charity event supporting the work of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, is here in Second Life once again for it’s 11th season with the theme “This is Your SLIFE”. This event is all about raising funds for early detection services for all in need. The founder of Rock Your Rack is Jamee Sandalwood and she knows the importance of early detection, as she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at the age of 38, before breast cancer screening is covered for women in the US. Most insurance carriers only cover it under the age of 40 if there is a known family history, which Jamee didn’t have.

Since she was fortunate enough to have a fantastic health team that diagnosed and treated quickly, she feels that her mission now is to provide the same opportunities to those that otherwise would not have many options. Every year her labor of love, Rock Your Rack, runs 10 days in early October with the participation of designers, musicians, dancers, models, artists and more all giving of their time and talents for this great cause. Last year they donated over $7000 USD to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

This year’s event opens on Friday, September 29th and will close on Saturday, October 8th. There are over 80 designer booths each with a limited edition item, an exclusive event item, and 10L hunt item plus other items at the designers choice. It’s not only women’s fashion, but home fashions, menswear, kids, poses, gadgets and more. There is something

for everyone in the shopping areas that represent themes from all around the grid including shopping mall, steampunk, western biker, fae and Coney island beach complete with rides.

Entertainment this year includes tribute concerts, live musicians, DJ Dance parties and TerpsiCorps Artwerks with two fantastic dance performances. There are even four fashion shows featuring not only exclusive items but for two of the shows the models shop the event themselves and put together looks from items available at the event at their own expense to show everyone how to shop the event. These model choice fashion shows are always a big hit.

It’s the best stage and light show on the grid designed and built by the amazing Brad Tylman. The sim was built and decorated by Jamee Sandalwood herself with the assistance of Isobel Belfire.

Jamee is very humble and doesn’t like to get all the credit for all the work that goes into this event every year. She just hopes that people will come, enjoy the event, the sim, the fun and if they can support the work of the National Breast Cancer Foundation by donating into one of the donation kiosks around the sim, purchasing items from the vendors at the event or by donating to the RL portal they have on their website. Together we can make a difference.
