Our Assemblies ASSEMBLY 4A 4A class assembly was on the theme of Tolerance. We realised how we need to be tolerant of each other. By acting out the story of the six blind men, who visited the elephant, we realised that each person will see things from a different point of view. Our words can have a real impact of each other.
For the first time we have moved from a termly to a bi-annual Chronicle, so in this latest edition we are able to share even more of the exciting activities that have gone on around the school over the last 6 months. When I look at everything that has been included within these pages and reflect upon the fun, the experiences and the learning that the children have enjoyed I am again hugely grateful to the great team of staff at Reigate St Mary’s who are relentless in their determination to give the children the best educational experience possible. ASSEMBLY 4GF 4GF’s assembly was a modern version of Hansel and Gretel in which Year 4 were taken into the deep, dark forest by their wicked teachers … and left there! 4GF’s acting was stunning, stupendous and simply amazing!
ASSEMBLY 4W The 4W assembly was a rewrite of the famous fairy tale – Jack and the Beanstalk. Jack had many choices on his journey and 4W asked the school to vote on which path to take, either that which ensured Jack protected the environment for future generations or the path that led to ecological disaster. Congratulations to the whole school who voted to protect the world.

YEAR 2 EGYPT TOPIC Year 2 have been enjoying their Egypt topic during the spring term. They have eaten Egyptian food, created Egyptian collar necklaces, translated hieroglyphics and explored the pyramids and the Sahara desert using Google Earth. It has been fascinating to learn all the facts, history and geography of the country- it has made many of us want to visit there ourselves!
Year 4 Walk in the Woods As part of their Into the Woods topic, Year 4 went walking on Holmbury Hill accompanied by expert story teller, Jane Lambourne. As they walked Jane told them traditional tales featuring Jack (as in Jack and the Beanstalk). The children also created their own fabulous tales. I liked the story where Jack got swallowed up by the wolf. Ben I enjoyed the part when my wellington boot flew off, because we were running down the hill and I didn’t notice! Dillion I loved it when we told our own stories. Anzu I liked lunch because the sandwiches were yummy. Alanna Seb and I ran down the hill and I did the splits! Ethan I loved the two minutes of silence; it felt like I was all alone. Archie I enjoyed the first story, when Jack kept getting everything wrong. It was really funny. Imogen
Safer Internet Day 2019 The pupils at Reigate St Mary’s participated in Safer Internet Day 2019 and took it to a new level this year, turning it into Safer Internet Week. Our very own Year 6 IT Leaders started the week off by presenting a whole school assembly to make the children aware of the important message ‘Together for a better Internet’. The children listened really well and responded fantastically, sharing their knowledge and answering questions about making the right choices online. Increasing awareness and appreciation of what permission is, when they should ask for it and how this may be asked of them. We encourage the pupils to ask a responsible adult if they are unsure and to know it is ok to simply say ‘NO!’ Throughout the week the pupils participated in activities during Form time, PSHE and Computing; reinforcing this very important topic. Each class thought of a pledge that would help to keep them safe online.
YEAR 6 ENGLISH - STOP PRESS! Year 6 worked collaboratively to create a newspaper report. The young journalists were sent emails that provided them with updates about the breaking news story. They then worked as a team to put the pieces of the story together before individually writing the newspaper article. There are definitely plenty of budding journalists in the group!

RECEPTION MAKING SALT DOUGH We have made our own salt dough, writing the ingredients and mixing them together on our own. We had to work together, take turns and share fairly.
YEAR 6 YOUNG SHAKESPEARE In November Year 6 were treated to a play by a theatre company performing Twelfth Night: a play by William Shakespeare. We were included in parts of the play, it was a way to enjoy the play even more and learn the story in greater detail.

Early Years Celebrates Grandparents’ Day
In Year 1 the children take part in ‘Child Initiated Learning activities,’ referred to as ‘Busy Bee Time.’ Providing the children with opportunities to work creatively allows them to develop their ideas and imaginations. The children have been inspired by our topic work on Wild and Wonderful World and Castles and have incorporated elements of topic into activities led by them during Busy Bee Time.
Children in Green Shoots, Kindergarten and Reception excitedly welcomed their Grandparents into their classrooms early in the Autumn Term. The children were delighted to show their visitors around and everyone relished sharing books and spending time together! It was fantastic to have so many visitors – we all enjoyed it immensely!
YEAR 5 DRUMMING WORKSHOP
Green Leaders On 26 November Mr Culverwell was delighted to take our Green Leaders to the first ever IAPS Sustainability Children’s Festival in Woking. The children from schools around Surrey came together to present on the 17 global sustainability goals and our Green Leaders spoke very articulately about climate change and why it is such an important area to tackle. They also explained why it needs to be embedded in the curriculums of every school so that the young people coming up through our schools can truly understand the significance and impact of climate change and why we all need to work incredibly hard to deal with it. In the afternoon we had a mock United Nations Parliament during which Rose spoke confidently about how local food production is in the interest of people in poverty as well as being beneficial for the environment. Priyan went on to explain to everyone why he thought that taxation on the wealthiest was indeed fair, tackling deprivation of the poorest on our planet – all very mature and insightful for 10 year olds.
YEAR 4’s CHALLENGES 4W enjoyed the opportunity to find out about the incredible artist Andy Goldsworthy and worked in small groups to create artworks imitating his work. 4W were set the challenge of calculating the height and age of the trees in the school grounds. Great teamwork meant that they were successful. As a mark of respect 4W went to the Commonwealth War Graves in St Marys churchyard and laid two poppies on each war grave.

YEAR 5 AFRICAN DANCE
Year 6 Great Wall of China During their study of China, the children in Year Six were fascinated to learn that Mrs Gatzanis took part in a marathon a few years ago where part of the course was actually on The Great Wall of China! She talked about her preparation, the actual event, where she ran through small villages meeting local people as well as climbing steps on the actual wall and the emotions that accompanied such an experience. Inspired by her words, the children wrote recounts and also posed for their own Great Wall Marathon green screen pictures.
RECEPTION PERFORM This term we were lucky enough to be visited by Perform who took us all on a Superhero adventure! Everyone listened carefully to the instructions and really got into role!
Year 1 Castles As an introduction to our castles topic the children were hands on in designing and making their very own 3D castles and shields during DT lessons. When making the castles the children were instrumental in choosing materials to construct their models, which fits nicely with our Science lessons this half term, they were also able to reflect on their design part way through and make any alterations as they felt were necessary. Finally, they were able to evaluate their completed castle and consider improvements when constructing in future.

Sparky the friendly class dragon continues to enjoy going home with the children in Year 1. Amongst his many adventures he has enjoyed building and riding virtual reality roller coasters, learning how to play card games, visiting the corner shop to buy sweets and participating in The Greatest Showman! These daily adventures were also supported by photographs and wonderful illustrations too.
I really enjoyed making the light bulbs work in our Science lesson. Dillion
YEAR 4 STAINED GLASS WINDOWS We made some beautiful stained glass windows using the woods as our inspiration. On some of the pictures we tried to create an Autumn and a Summer scene, or Summer and Winter.
I found a spider and enjoyed looking at it in our Science lesson but I was sad when I had to let it go. Robert

YEAR 4 SCIENCE HABITATS As part of our habitats study we conducted a mini beast hunt and identification. We had great fund finding the mini beasts in their environment and using identification charts to work out what they were. We made sure that we returned them to where they had come from.
The School Council In School Council we do a lot of thinking! For example, Mr Culverwell and his team asked the Council for feedback on how the system for moving the children on and off The Bund to eat their lunches was working. The Council members commented that they found it difficult to know when they were supposed to leave The Bund and go to the Dining Room. Being the School Council, they then came up with a simple and ingenious idea: have a clock on The Bund. Mrs Smith, our fabulous new Bursar, has ordered the clock.

YEAR 4 QUIZ BOARDS When 4A were working on electricity we applied our understanding to make electrical quiz boards.
Since the start of Year 2, children have been using a topic related book to base their English learning upon. During the London topic we looked at ‘Claude in the City’ and enjoyed using our senses to describe the busy and noisy streets of London. In our Egypt topic we used ‘Zeraffa Giraffa’ which helped us with writing about settings as the book contained beautiful pictures of Africa. We also focused on the characters and had great discussions about whether or not we agreed with their actions.

Year 5 Visit Windmill Hill As September was drawing to a close Year 5 enjoyed the last of the autumn sun at Windmill Hill Adventure Centre. The children enjoyed new experiences, challenging themselves to face their fears to set them up for the new academic year. It was lovely to see new friendships develop and get to know the children. YEAR 4 BARK & LEAF RUBBINGS As part of the start of our topic of Into the Woods, we looked closely at the patterns and designs of trees bark and the leaves. From this we had an super time making rubbings. As one child said “Look at this Mr Alden – it looks real!”
Anti-Bullying Week 2018 - Odd Socks Day launched Anti-bullying Week - Year 5 like and respect each other - Year 3 worked together to create poems about respect - Year 4 thought about ways they could show respect.
YEAR 4 MEASURING TREES We measured the height of tress in the school grounds. We used a formula to gain the approximate height of the trees. We also measure around the tree to work out its girth. From this, we could work out approximately how old the tree was. We were really surprised at how old some of the trees are. They take a long time to grow!
Year 6 Batik First we drew our designs on blue paper, then we got given a special tool to hold scalding wax. We transferred our design on the fabric by dripping the wax onto cloth. The wax acted like a barrier so that when Mrs Wright dyed them, the places with wax stayed white. Then Mrs Wright ironed off the wax and a white design on a blue cloth was left. Priyan

In January, Year 2 had a very special visitor…. Pharaoh Cleopatra! She came all the way from Ancient Egypt to tell us all about Egyptian lifestyle, and in particular their very exotic sense of style and clothing. We learnt about the impact of their religion and temperature on the clothes that they wore. Did you know that most Egyptian people shaved their heads and wore a wig?!
RECEPTION’S CHINESE NEW YEAR The children were delighted to be visited by Mr and Mrs Lee who told us all about Chinese New Year. They brought some wonderful artefacts for the children to share and explore as well as telling us all about the story of the Chinese Zodiac.
YEAR 3 GREEN SCREEN Our rainforest green screen looked phenomenal when it was finished. We thoughtfully coloured in our masks beforehand. It looked a little strange when we saw our heads ‘floating’! Our group was a mix of elegant zebras, stealthy and cunning jaguars and a vibrant toucan. We enjoyed it greatly and were overjoyed with the results! Bea and Christobel
YEAR 4 AUTUMN ART COLLAGE As part of our art work linked to our Combined Humanities topic of Into the Woods we made collages using some resources from the bund.

Early Years Nativity One of the highlights of the Autumn Term is always the Early Years Christmas Concert, and this year was no different! The children from Kindergarten and Reception performed brilliantly, retelling the story of The First Christmas through acting and song. Not only did everyone remember what they had to do and when, but they also sang with all their heart and played musical instruments!
YEAR 3 STUNNING START YEAR 3 GROWING CRESS Our predictions when growing cress seeds in different conditions. I think that the plant will grow really well because it has got everything it needs. I think that the seeds will not grow because they don’t have warmth.
Year 3 approached their ‘Stunning Starter’ with great excitement and enthusiasm when they found out that they were creating the different layers of a rainforest to make a 3D model. They worked collaboratively to create a specific layer and demonstrated lots of wonderful and creative ideas too!

RECEPTION WINTER FESTIVALS
On Wednesday 30th January Year 4 travelled to Guildford for a special Schools Concert performed by Southern Pro Musica. The children thoroughly enjoyed the program and came back inspired and with the promise of practising their instruments even more so that they too might be able to join an Orchestra one day. They wrote to the orchestra thanking them for such a wonderful concert.
The children have delighted in learning about different Winter festivals including Diwali and Christmas. They carefully crafted Diva Lamps out of clay, and took care over painting them.
YEAR 4 WEIGHING GAS In Science we spent a lesson weighing gas. We used Orange Fanta, lemonade and Coke. We measured the weight at the beginning and the stirred the cup of liquid and then weighed again. Each one had a about 1g of gas to 100ml of liquid!
As Christmas approached, the children helped to create Santa’s Workshop in the role-play area and had a great time delivering presents to each other.
KINDERGARTEN TRIP TO REIGATE LIBRARY Kindergarten visited Reigate Library in January as the Stunning Start to our topic ‘Will you read me a story?’ We walked to the library, and were greeted by the librarians who read us some stories, sang some songs, and gave us an interesting talk about what happens in a library. Then we split into three groups, and decorated bunting with our favourite story characters, learned how to scan a book in and out, and went on a treasure hunt. Finally, we walked back to school. The children all behaved brilliantly, and were a credit to the school.

This term in Science Year 1 have been looking at everyday materials, identifying, naming, sorting and exploring the properties of materials. They have carried out simple investigations to help them decide which material would be most suitable to use as an umbrella!

Year 3 Art I enjoyed my beetle sketch because I liked shading the legs and the arms of it. Daniel I like my beetle sketch as it is detailed and it is how I wanted it to be. I also liked the shading and how I did it. Mehvish I think my best work is my leaf and my beetle. I think I did excellent shading and colour choices on the leaf. Evie

CONCERTS Early Years and Lower School Nativities Reception and Kindergarten children reminded us of the Christmas Story with their musical version of a traditional Nativity. Meanwhile Years 1 and 2 commandeered a flustered midwife and put-upon donkey to take us on a hilarious journey to the stable in Bethlehem.
Lower School Christmas Service During the Lower School Christmas Service the parents and children fastened their seat belts and set off on a journey around the world to learn about the different Christmas customs and see how Christmas is celebrated! Some of the Reception children shared Christmas baubles that gave us clues (via the countries flag and an object that is associated with their Christmas celebrations) in the hope we could guess where in the world we were! Year 1 and Year 2 children read with clarity and confidence and the whole of Lower School sang the Christmas songs with great gusto! Well done lower school for making the start of the Christmas celebrations so special.
Upper School Concert The audience were astonished as they were taken back in time to the Victorian era for the Upper School Christmas Concert. Our musicians and dancers performed a range of musical items illustrating important themes from the novel ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. One of the first songs was sung by Year 6, ‘Winter Carol’ and Aaron, one of our Music Leaders, describes it as atmospheric and with beautiful harmonies. All of our instrumental groups played too and impressed everyone with their musical talent. RSM Dance Club also took part with a medley from the musical ‘Oliver’, based on the Dickens novel. Green Shoots ‘HERE I AM’ TOPIC At the start of the Autumn Term, as part of our ‘Here I am’ topic, Green Shoots children painted outlines of themselves, using mirrors to see their hair and eye colour. The outlines were then put into the Maths area with a height chart and tape measures so the children can see how much they have grown.
LIGHT PANEL Green Shoots have recently purchased a light panel. It is providing the basis for exciting activities, which is enhancing the quality of their learning environment. They are beginning to explore using a variety of resources from coloured numbers and letters to natural materials such as leaves and pine cones.
WOODLAND WALK After half term, the children put on their wellingtons and took magnifying glasses and binoculars to explore the nature reserve. They were looking for woodland animals and their homes. They were fascinated to find lots of insects living underneath a log. They heard birds, saw squirrels and noticed a tree with a big hole which they suggested could be home to an owl…
RECYCLING WEEK Mr Culverwell visited Green Shoots to talk about recycling. We sang some clean-up and recycling songs while Mrs Culverwell played his guitar. We looked at some pictures in the environment and recycling and we then helped Mr Culverwell sort out his recycling. It’s great fun looking after our world.
Kindergarten AUTUMN TERM
Kindergarten enjoyed a busy and productive Autumn Term. Our topic for the term was Where in the World? We started the year thinking about Ourselves, and during our Stunning Starter we enjoyed sharing photos of us as babies, and talking about our families. We really enjoyed our ‘senses’ week when among other things, there were lots of interesting things to smell, touch and taste in the classroom! After half term, we moved on to thinking about the world around us, and visited a different continent every week, ending up in the Ice Pole just before Christmas. We have been very lucky this year to have had lots of visits from parents and school families who have given up their time to speak to us about their experiences in the world. Mrs Covey very kindly came back to talk to us about her trip to Kenya, visiting the Masai Mara and the elephant sanctuary, and Mr Hassan brought us wonderful mangoes and melons as snacks when he talked to us about his childhood growing up in Pakistan. Mr Post also brought in some homemade pumpkin pie (thank you Mrs Post!) when he came to speak to us about Thanksgiving traditions in the United States, and (during the first part of the Spring term) Mrs Churchley and Mrs Ward brought in delicious Dim Sum and prawn crackers when it was their turn to bring Chinese New Year to life for the children. The children really benefitted from the different perspectives our visitors brought into the classroom and we thank them again for the time they have taken. Our Marvellous Middle was great fun we were very lucky to have a fantastic around the world dancing lesson from Mrs Petersen-Jones and there was some brilliant Bollywood dancing in the Sports Hall! Finally, to end the term, everyone dressed up in a costume from a different country for our Fabulous Finish, and the children enjoyed making pizzas and enjoyed a tasty snack of fruit from around the world.
SPRING TERM In the Spring Term, we moved on the topic Will You Read me a Story? where we engaged with a mixture of traditional and non-traditional stories and rhymes. We enjoyed a morning at Reigate Library for our Stunning Starter, which was a great success.
YEAR 2 MATHS The children worked in groups to name and describe the properties of different 3D shapes. They then were asked to find objects around the classroom that they could see different 3D shapes in.

Year 6 Residential Trip to Snowdonia, North Wales
This was the second trip to Snowdonia in September. We moved this event from the end of the Summer Term to the start of the Autumn Term because we recognised the value in developing confidence, teamwork and leadership skills before our senior pupils fully embraced their leadership responsibilities and the challenges of Year 6. Once again it was a brilliant trip. The children enjoyed kayaking and rock climbing, gorge walking and team building activities and of course, the climb up Snowdon. For two groups this was in thick fog and for the other two groups, the very next day, in bright sunlight. (Life’s not fair is it?) This trip is not only about developing these important life skills but also about developing deeper learning regarding the importance of looking after the natural environment and sustainable living. The children were encouraged once again to consider sticks, stones and leaves – what they want to stick with, what they want to build upon (stone) and what they want to leave (leaf ) behind. Here are some of their thoughts:
When we got to the top of Snowdon we took some victory photos because we were all feeling fantastic that we had made it to the top. Today was such an amazing experience and I wish I could do it again. Lauren I’ll stick with listening to others because I listen to people most of the time (stick). I’ll build on giving my ideas to the team because I don’t usually share my ideas (stone). I’ll leave behind what I did on Mount Snowdon because I left some of the team behind and that isn’t teamwork (leaf ). Junyoung I would like to stick with helping other people. I am going to keep trying to encourage other people even if they did badly. I am going to stop starting arguments, that way no one gets sad. Aaron I am going to keep helping others (stick). I am going to be more positive (stone) and I am going to be less negative (leaf ). Zac I am going to continue being a good team member and not complain (stick). I am going to build on my strength and my confidence as an individual (stone). I am going to leave behind, criticising others or making fun of people when they make mistakes (leaf ). Luke Our first activity was kayaking. It really made me think about how beautiful the environment is and how we need to protect it. I will stick with that thought. Emmeline I will stick with not littering and trying to make a difference (stick). I am going to build on teamwork (stone). Outdoor Learning RECEPTION
YEAR 2
On a sunny September afternoon, Reception went out and about in the school grounds to collect natural materials to make pictures. They had a wonderful time working together and using their imaginations to create artwork using sticks, stones, leaves and twigs.
All of Year 2 have embraced outdoor learning, even during the winter! We took part the in bi-annual Outdoor Classroom Day in November where we took part in Maths and Art activities outdoors. We have also taken Science outside, where we designed and made a nest habitat for the creatures in our environment, such as hedgehogs. We used natural materials and once we had made them we tested their effectiveness by putting a bottle of boiling water in the nest and taking the temperature at various intervals to see which nests were the most effective at keeping the heat in.
We love exploring the school grounds, taking our binoculars and magnifying glasses and looking for seasonal changes in the environment. We love learning about Maths outside! One fresh morning we had good fun collecting twigs and sticks to compare their lengths.
The children in 2DM went outside to explore prepositions. They had lots of fun going inside the gazebo, down to the multi and standing beside Mrs Chippendale!
SUMMER 2018:
French Trip to ‘Château de la Baudonnière, Normandie’ This residential trip to Normandy is the highlight of the year for MFL and, of course, Monsieur Hollands. It is the most popular and longest running ‘optional’ trip at RSM. The Château de la Baudonnière is the source of endless enjoyment and much pleasure for everyone. Each summer, children return from their week at the Château full of their exciting experiences together and with increased confidence to participate in MFL lessons. Summer 2018 was no exception. The children who were part of the trip share many of their highlights: I really enjoyed going to the ‘mini-ferme’ because there were a lot of cool animals that you could stroke and there were cute animals also. I really enjoyed the assault course (‘parcours de santé’) because it was fun getting wet with my friends. My favourite activities were rock climbing and the assault course; the mud-slide was awesome! I liked being with my friends. I particularly liked looking at the animals in the farm and holding the baby rabbits. I enjoyed the orienteering as it was great fun going around the Château grounds. I really enjoyed the assault course because I conquered my fear of swinging on a rope across water. I loved the mini-ferme and 100% loved going shopping in the market. I really enjoyed the French Trip last summer! It was my birthday on one of the days so that made it extra special. We went to a market and a goat farm – it was really fun! I also enjoyed the muddy assault course. We all got very muddy but it was worth it. The ‘Fabrication de pain’ (bread-making) was one of my favourite activities. It was baked after we made it and was ready for us to taste and enjoy at our next meal; Mmmm! We had loads of fun during our final football season at RSM. We enjoyed all our fixtures, win or lose, we are proud of how we played. Well done to the Under 11 As who won the Plate in the tournament at Caterham. William and Aaron scored amazing penalties to give them the win against Elmhurst. GIRLS FOOTBALL
On Monday 3rd of December our Lions and Puma’s football team went to Caterham School to play in their first girls football tournament. The girls had been practising during in the Monday lunchtime elective and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.
UNDER 9 LINGFIELD TOURNAMENT
A great afternoon of hockey was enjoyed by our under 9 A team at the Lingfield College tournament. The girls got off to a fantastic start winning their first match against Burgess Hill 3-0. They stayed undefeated for the rest of the tournament and finished in first place. Well done girls.
HOUSE HOCKEY
The Year 5 and 6 House Hockey Competition was played at Reigate Grammar school astro with every girl working her hardest for their team. There were some really close matches and super hockey skills on show. Well done to Hobson who came out overall winners.
YEARS 5 & 6 HOUSE RUGBY
On Friday 25th January, the Year 5 and 6 boys competed in the Inter-House Rugby competition. There were lots of tries scored, some fantastic rugby played and some very close matches. Congratulations to Hobson who were the winners of the competition.
