Our Assemblies ASSEMBLY 3P Rainforest Adventure
As I write this introduction I am still glowing from the brilliance of the Years 5 and 6 production of Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies. This was certainly one of the highlights of the term and what a triumph it was. More about this later in the Chronicle, but I want to pay tribute to Mrs MacPherson who pulled the whole thing together in a very tight timeframe and also to every member of staff who supported her. Events like this demonstrate the superb teamwork which makes the school such a roaring success - and roar the audience did both at the jokes and in their applause. The whole term has been brilliant however. We have had great success in sport, in chess, in karate - and as ever the teaching staff have come up with wonderfully creative ideas for bringing the children’s learning to life. From Drumming workshops to Victorian days and from visiting artists to whole school reading events on World Book Day, there has indeed been a lot of fun and excitement since January. We are also delighted that 48 of our current Year 6 pupils have been offered places at Reigate Grammar School, with 17 scholarships between them. Our success rate for pupils being made offers to our senior school is much higher than any other school, and we congratulate the children on making such good academic progress. A special mention goes to the Razor Sharp Minds who went to the National Finals of the First Lego League in Bristol and also to our Dance Troupe where 86 of them danced at the Harlequin Theatre entertaining a sell-out audience with their talent and enthusiasm. I hope that you will enjoy reading the following pages to get a better flavour of everything that has gone on throughout the school during this rewarding term.

On Wednesday 15th March 2017 it was our Rainforest assembly. At first I was a bit worried I would go wrong but was really excited, in the end it was fine, everyone really enjoyed it and had fun. I was a logger, I wore a builder’s hat and a bright yellow jacket and I had a piece of real wood. I really enjoyed all of it, the message was about sustainability. Sustainability means take only what is needed. I learnt that a part of the rainforest is cut down every year the size of Britain. Aisha
On Wednesday 15th March our assembly took place. It went well and everyone projected their voices. I was a sloth and I was wearing a mask with a sloths face on it. Everyone’s costumes were fabulous and everyone remembered their lines, it went smoothly, I went slowly! Monty In our Rainforest assembly we were telling people about sustainability and I was excited to show my dad. Also I was a logger and my props were a log and a high visibility jacket, overall it was a very good assembly. After that when we had finished Mr Culverwell said it was a very good piece of information. Ryan On Wednesday 15th March I was super excited about our assembly. It was based on the Rainforest and I was a jaguar. We had props. In drama we chose our parts. My favourite line was “be sustainable, that means cut down what is needed not for the sake of it”. Imogen
ASSEMBLY 5W A look at growth mindset On 26th January 5W had our assembly. It was about Growth Mindset. My favourite part was when we talked about how Edison invented 10,000 light bulbs before he found one that worked. We than went on to tell everyone a story about Bobby Bee. Bobby didn’t know how to find the nectar at the start of the story but then Betty Bee saw Bobby Bee looking sad and asked offered to help him. By having a growth mindset Bobby was able to learn how to find the nectar and enjoy drinking it. At last we talked about times we had growth mindset. We think that the rest of the school enjoyed our assembly and that it helped explain a little more about growth mindset. Edward

ASSEMBLY 4S The traditions of Pancake Day On Wednesday 28th February it was 4S’s assembly. It was about pancake day. I had the part of speaker 5 and I explained about what foods were banned during lent. My favourite part was when Emmeline was hiding behind the parents. When she spoke everyone in the sports hall looked and looked to see where the voice was coming from. The funniest part was when Luke said he was going to give up crisps but he didn’t put the chip bag the box that had the cross on it, everyone laughed out loud. I think Luke might of been a bit embarrassed but he laughed along with everyone. I loved it when Aime (who played Jesus) was acting. Rhianna On Wednesday 28th February we had our class assembly. Our play was all about the story of pancake day. When we were getting ready we had lots of talking about how we look and do we have all the props until the first few classes came in and we all got quiet.
On Wednesday 28th February 4S had our class assembly. Our assembly was all about pancake day. It was about how it began. It was all about how Jesus stayed 40 days and 40 nights in the dessert. We first started our assembly by saying why Jesus quit his job as a carpenter and wanted to spread the word of love and forgiveness. So he went down to the River Jordan to be baptised by his cousin John the Baptist. Jesus was very confused why his cousin turned up at the water’s edge to be baptised. Jesus wanted to make a new start in life. After his baptism he went to the dessert to pray for forty days and forty nights without any food there. So today we try to give up something that is bad for us and try to eat more of the stuff that is good for us. This is called lent. We have pancakes on pancake day to use up all the stuff that would otherwise go off like eggs and milk so that we don’t waist anything. So that is why we have pancakes on pancake day. Ella On my birthday we had our class assembly. My part was John the Baptist. Unlike most other people I had to wear a shepherds outfit with a beard! Everyone had great fun. Our story was about why we have pancakes on pancake day. For lent I am giving up sweets. It’s going to be very tough! Harry
When our play started we all got very excited. I was a narrator and only got a few lines but I liked that. When my part came I made a mess but came back from it and was happy with what I did. I don’t think anyone wanted to be dunked into a river that me and Aaron were holding up but everyone seemed fine with it. John the Baptist would say a quick prayer before dunking Jesus into the river. When the evil spirit started speaking nobody knew where she was! When the part about what I am giving up for lent part happened I was surprised that Emmeline had given up ketchup with here dinners because I really like ketchup personally. When the play came to a close and we finished our prayer all our parents came to take photos of us which was slightly awkward but we didn’t really care. Freddie
ASSEMBLY 4G A potted history of Reigate
CHORISTERS The choristers have had a fairly quiet term - for a change! Congratulations go to Ryan Panose, James Chan and Matthew Tracy as they have been promoted. On another note, the boys would like to express their gratitude and respect to James Benton for all he has done in the choir as he accepts the recent and inevitable change to his voice, meaning that his days as a chorister are now in the past. We all applaud his tremendous contribution over the last five years and know that he will be greatly missed. Looking ahead, a historic development is on the horizon for the choir. Until now, only boys have enjoyed the training and experience of becoming choristers. RSM is delighted to announce that as from September 2017, girls will have the same opportunity. The two choirs will be mostly separate, coming together for special events. Girls will sing at matins for the first time and Reigate St Mary’s great choral tradition will take a step forward in to the future. RECEPTIONS’ AMAZING AFRICA Reception have been reading Anna Hibiscus’ Song and learning about amazing Africa!
Year 2s Mummy Wrapping Year 2 worked in groups to collaboratively create a real life mummy! When I was wrapped up as a mummy it was difficult to move my legs. My group laid me on the floor and worked together to wrap me up. My team did argue a bit but most of the time they worked well together. Shivali
I was lucky because my friend made me a walking stick to help me move around. My group were kind and kept asking me if I felt ok. They all wrapped up different parts of me. Sophia
I felt like I was a real mummy and I tried not to breathe so I could pretend to be in a sarcophagus. My group all wanted to be the ones with the toilet paper to wrap me but they took it in turns. We chose by who’s birthday it was first in the year. Niccolo
Anna’s Collage We have worked together using different textures and techniques to create a class collage of one of the pictures in the book. We all did a little bit and were extremely pleased with the end result which formed a fantastic back drop to our role play area!
YEAR 2 MATHS GAMES Year 2 had fun playing the Egyptian themed maths games they created over the half term break.

Reception Visit Drusillas At the end of this term Reception visited Drusillas. After learning about Monkeys this term we were excited to see some in ‘real life’ swinging from branch to branch. During our Animals Encounters workshop we were also lucky enough to be able to find out about and touch a variety of unusual animals including a Bearded Lizard called Bert and a Chinchilla called John! What a fantastic finish! The children were superbly well behaved and interested to see so many different creatures but as always one of the highlights was a packed lunch in the sunshine!
YEAR 2 SUGAR CUBE PYRAMIDS Year 2 were set the challenge of building a sugar cube pyramid. They had to work collaboratively to build the best pyramid they could without eating the building materials!
RECEPTION POUNDING YAM First we peeled the yam and then our teachers cut them up and put the pieces into a pan of boiling water. We had to be patient and wait for the yam to go soft. After what felt like a very long time (but was probably 10 mins!) we were all able to have a go at pounding the yam. It was good fun but hard work! Finally, we got to eat it.

YEAR 3 STUNNING START On Wednesday 11th January we went to priory park. For our Rainforest topic we saw Pinecones, leaves and twigs it smelt of bark. I enjoyed our year 3 trip. Riya
Year 1 Busy Bee Time In year 1 the children take part in ‘Child Initiated Learning activities,’ referred to as ‘Busy Bee Time.’ Providing the children with opportunities to work creatively allows them to develop their ideas and imaginations. This term the children have been inspired by our topic work on Castles and have incorporated elements of our topic into activities led by them during Busy Bee Time.
On Wednesday 11th January Year 3 went to Priory Park. We heard bird noises and the wind making noises as well. Before 3M and 3P went back to RSM, the teachers had to hold a bag each and each class had to collect leaves for double art on Friday 13th January. Shalini
On Wednesday 11th January 2017, we went to priory park, in the woods, to look at stuff like leaves, plants, trees and sticks. We played on the grass then came back to school. We ran around the bund, then came into the class and went home. Benjamin
DAVID SHEPHERD FOUNDATION VISIT On Friday 3rd March the David Shepherd Wildlife foundation led a workshop for Year 1 to find out more about endangered wildlife around the world focussing particularly on tigers. The children thoroughly enjoyed creating their own tiger faces from paper plates which they had painted prior to the session. They decorated the faces using a variety of materials and we were really impressed at how well they followed the instructions given.

Year 4 Visit The Cranston Library We went to St Mary’s church and went to the back where we discovered a really old door. We had to wait for two old ladies to let us in. We walked up some steep and narrow stairs. At the top was the Cranston Library. It was a very old, secret room where there were millions of ancient books. It smelt like tea bags drying on the radiator. There were some tiny books about the size of 20 lego bricks. The big books were really precious. My favourite part was the creepy stairs. You must go and see it, it was brilliant! William
On Wednesday 8th February, Year 4 went to the Cranston library. It is just above Reigate St Mary’s church on top of the vestry. The library was the first lending library in the whole of England. When it was first available to the public it has 1600 books and it gained nearly 1000 books, totalling over 2522 books now. The library got less use in the early 2000’s. My favourite part was seeing all the pictures in the Lapland book as they were so amazingly drawn and so realistic. Ben
KINDERGARTEN ONCE UPON A TIME This term in Kindergarten we have been looking at Once Upon a Time. We have been looking at both traditional tales and modern tales. They started the time by looking at the elves and the shoemaker, measuring and comparing their feet. We then had a visitor in Kindergarten, Gerry the Gingerbread man came to say hello but then ran away! The children had lots of fun receiving email updates about where Gerry had been. Gerry made it all the way to USA, first class of course! We are still waiting for him to come back so hopefully he will come back before we say goodbye for the summer. We finished the traditional tales with the billy goats gruff trip trapping over the bridge, and sequencing the stories ourselves. Kindergarten then had a wonderful morning dressed up as traditional characters, we had princesses, fairy’s and even a mad hatter.
YEAR 3 MARVELLOUS MIDDLE Yesterday it was our marvellous middle, we went into 3M and took a clipboard and pen. We wrote about cacao and deforestation. Afterwards we went back in to 3P to make truffles. Buddy
Yesterday we had our marvellous middle and we made chocolate, but before that we watched a clip about deforestation. Deforestation means protecting the forest and growing cocao. We made chocolate truffles which tasted delicious. Alexandra
Yesterday it was our marvellous middle, first we went into 3M and watched a clip about cacao beans and the rainforest. After that we made some chocolate truffles which were very delicious. The next day we got to smell and taste a few things that grow in the rainforest like limes, lemons, coffee beans, cinnamon sticks and ground nutmeg. It was very fun, I had a great time. Luella
When we arrived back after the half term a space rocket has landed in the garden. The children used the spaceship to fly into Space and look for aliens. The children used their alliteration skills to name the aliens, we had Filly Fuzz, Venus Vink Vunk and Billy Bob Bat all arrive in the spaceship. The children then had a wonderful visitor, Mrs Dawes came into the classroom and showed us her wonderful astronauts badges which came from NASA. Now the children are finishing the term going under the sea. We are continuing our theme of once upon a time and are looking at a variety of under the sea books, such as Rainbow fish and Tiddler. We have created our own versions of rainbow fish and are talking about what creatures Kindergarten would like to be and why.

UK & IRELAND NATIONAL FINAL On Sunday, 26th February 2017, nine young students in Razor Sharp Minds took part in the Lego League national final on behalf of Sussex. The start being at 8:00 am, most of us took a car down the night before the day, however some of us woke up at 4:30 to go to Bristol. When we arrived, we went to the pits to set up and get prepared.
The first challenge that we faced was to present the RDES (Robot Design Executive Summary). We explained every aspect of our robot – FeeBee, from the claws to the sting. The PowerPoint showed the judges exactly why we built FeeBee how we did. After questions from the judges, the team returned to base and continued to give out bags of goodies and loom bands to all of the other teams. The next challenge was the first of three robot games. The robot performed well, however we only scored forty-eight points as we did not complete every mission we went for. After a small break in base, the team went on to do their research project for the judges. Before the presentation, there was a technical issue with the HDMI cable?! However, it was fixed, and the presentation could continue. This was the best run of the presentation yet, and we all really enjoyed it. The next activity the team did was the second robot game. This time, more of our programs worked and we scored a total of sixty-four points. After this, we had our lunch. Next, we did our Core Values presentation. It went very well (especially as we had not practised it) and it was definitely the best run through yet. Finally, we were getting prepared for our final robot game, when we found out that the opposite team were going to do the joint mission, which
meant we could score and extra sixty points. Unfortunately, they were stopped ½ second away from finishing the mission, so on the final round we only scored fifty-four. The last thing in the day was to go to the awards ceremony. Unfortunately, we did not win anything, thus we went home empty handed. However, we all had a great and tiring day, and I would definitely do it all again. Oliver

GATWICK REGIONAL FINAL AND UK FINAL BRISTOL I would like to express my thanks and congratulations to each member of the Razor Sharp Minds team, Joseph Bachelor, Joe Fenton, Caitlyn Fraser, Hannah Watson, Oliver Ford, Bjorn Madsen, Anush Upadhyay, Edward Duff & Owen Weber, for their enthusiasm, dedication & expertise throughout the journey. The RSM team were AMAZING on the day of the final! The venue was HUGE and the support provided by parents & siblings was SPECTACULAR!! I was impressed with how the team performed in each of the judged elements, Research, Core Values & Robot design, their enthusiasm for the Animal Allies season was contagious. The standard of competition from the 47 other teams was extremely high and RSM children held their own against the 16 year olds fantastically! Thanks must also go to all of the children in school that helped make loom bands and designed the RSM seed packets. It became a whole school community team!

GREEN SHOOTS
Reception Monkey Puzzle Finding the Clues and Ladder Building
As part of our Colours topic, Green Shoots took coloured scarves onto the Bund on a windy morning and had great fun making them fly. Green Shoots enjoyed their Jolly Journeys Topic and had fun making a train using painted cardboard boxes. They bought tickets from the ticket office and climbed aboard! Green Shoots set up a Recycling Station and enjoyed learning all about the different symbols for sorting the rubbish into the appropriate areas
After Christmas Reception children returned to school to find their classrooms were awash with sticks, twigs and banana skins! After a mysterious few days the children were greeted by visitors in the form of three rather shy monkeys, perched up high! The children spent time thinking about what the monkey was doing in their classroom and how he might be feeling. They worked hard to gain the monkeys’ trust by writing him letters and eventually he wrote back to ask for their help… he had not learnt to climb yet and he was stuck! Luckily Reception were full of ideas and it was agreed they would work collaboratively to build ladders. They shared their ideas and showed good team work which thankfully helped the monkeys to safety. Well done Reception!
ECO COMMITTEE GREEN FLAG The Eco Committee have been working hard sometimes behind the scenes and sometimes in full view of the school in assemblies! It is down to them that we have earned our second Green Flag. It is fun but certainly not easy to earn Flags. We have to apply for one and then an Eco Schools Assessor comes round to the school, talks to the Eco Committee and looks at all we have done. They then decided whether or not to award the school with a Green Flag. There are nine categories to obtaining a Green Flag from Ecoschools. For the first flag we had to work on 5 categories, and this flag lasts 2 years. We then have the opportunity to work for our second flag and this time we had to work on the 5 categories plus another 2, making 7. In two year’s time we will apply for our third Green Flag and will have had to work on all nine categories, so we certainly can’t rest!
GREEN HEART DAy This term Green Heart Day was held on Friday 24th March. It was the second one held and was a great success with hearts of all sizes being displayed on uniforms. Some were large and had recycled things stuck on them, some were made of recycled items and some were small and discreet, but….. they were all hearts and were all green. We hold this day each year to show our love for our wonderful planet. We need to remind ourselves to look after our world, to recycle, reuse and reduce the things we use.

RSM Harlequin Dance Show On Wednesday 8th of March all 86 RSM dancers travelled to the Harlequin theatre during school to rehearse our dance that we would perform to an eager crowd at 7:00 that night! We had a busy schedule as we were the biggest group there. As people took the seats backstage in the dressing room it was chaos. Putting on last minute make-up, checking hair & stretching . Drill team was the opening performance with ‘Do your thing’ by Basement Jaxx and made an outstanding performance which set expectations high. Other dances from other schools where before us so the drill team helped the Year 3 and 4 dance troupe prepare for their adorable dance to ‘I don’t need anything but you’ from Annie. They were absolutely fabulous darlings and Mrs PJ was jumping for joy but the show wasn’t over yet. The boys followed this with a fantastic dance routine to ‘Move your hair’ from Trolls the movie . Last but definitely on least was the year 5 & 6 dance troupe who were incredible to watch dancing to ‘Can’t stop the feeling’ by Justin Timberlake. RSM put on such a show but it wouldn’t have been done without Mrs PJ and our dance teacher Rebecca. All the hard work and effort they put into our routines made them so unbelievable. We thank them for everything and can’t wait until next year Rebecca

Cue the music, light the lights, time to raise the curtain on Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies! It was an amazing experience and on behalf year six we are thankful for Mrs Macpherson to believing in us all the way. The audience went ballistic! We had our makeup done, hair styling on point, fabulous costumes, and dazzling cheesy photos taken of everyone. It took time to make it perfect and we made mistakes but we followed through and made it a night to remember. Thank you to Mrs Fenton for making us look absolutely stunning; no one would think we are in disguise. Whilst we are on the thank you’s; thank you to Mrs PJ for the terrific dance moves and to Mrs Chippendale for knowing it better than us! Thank you to backstage and everyone else. Personally, my favourite part is when we join together to save Marion. I’m very proud of all Year six (and Year 5) for working hard and of us getting rapturous applause, adoring fans, but not sausages. I was Alannah Dale and enjoyed playing that part. Robin might be the wonder of the wood but we were all heroes that unforgettable night. Charlotte
Our play started off with no one knowing their lines and Mrs MacPherson was very worried, but when we had to do a dress rehearsal we pulled it out of the bag and only forgot 1 or 2 of our lines. Mrs MacPherson said “For once I can finally sleep and I haven’t been able to do that in a long time.” By the time of the first show we all knew our lines and the audience didn’t notice any of the mistakes. There were lots of songs and my favourite was The Merry Men In Tights. I was most
proud of the fact that the day before the first show I was told that I had to be Napsack and I learnt all of the lines and made no mistakes. My favourite line was “We’re not travellers, we’re spies.” In the production I was a villager for the first half and I was King Richard Lion Heart for the second half .Over all I had a really good time and the I thought it went very well. I hope that the year 5s have as much fun as we did. Hector

MY SCHOOL PRODUCTION EXPERIENCE... About 12 weeks ago we were told in assembly that ‘Robin and the sherwood hoodies’ would be this year’s school production. Some faces dropped and some raised; I was so excited yet so confused at the beginning. I didn’t know anything about it! We were then told about auditions and then given scripts and a piece of paper telling us where to sign up. Weeks past. I had been so enthusiastic that I had signed up to every audition possible. My first audition I played Grabbit, a jester/robber who was very funny with his friend Bolt. I was so scared and I was scared on most auditions. Then the big day came when we would find out who we would playing, I didn’t necessarily have an exact part I wanted to play, I just wanted a part people would remember. Then Mrs Macpherson called out my name and shouted “King John!” I was so happy yet so confused. I didn’t know much about this character, but as soon as I got home after the first rehearsal when we had been given a full script I rushed to my room and read the whole script. Then rehearsals began, we started off with a chair and the floor, that’s all. We read through the whole play in the church hall. It was so exciting seeing everyone in character! Then, over time we had put the whole thing together and we found out we were doing a dress rehearsal in front of the whole school. I almost vomited. We had been practising so hard but were we really ready? On Wednesday, we did our dress rehearsal. It was so scary at first. Then we got into our costumes and I felt so much better. I personally thought I had a brilliant costume designed by Mrs Fenton. My makeup as well was spectacular! Mrs Fenton said I was
‘Glittertastic.’ I really was! I wore a glitter blazer, a white shirt and skinny tie with some black jeans. The top of my face and hair was coated in glitter. I really was glittertastic! It was so exciting seeing everyone in their outfits, I felt so excited! The dress rehearsal was incredible! Everyone did great, despite a few bumps on the way we all were fantastic. I was so enthusiastic about the whole thing that I tried to relax as much as possible. But I couldn’t, I practiced and practiced and practiced! Then on Friday 17th march 2017 I and the whole of Year 6 got into our costumes and put into our makeup ready to step into the shoes of our characters. We were all so excited that we were shivering. As I got up on stage in scene 3 I could just see my parents in the corner of my eye as I shouted my first 2 words. Every performance was perfect, although there was a slight mistake on the second performance nobody noticed. And as we said our final words on Saturday night we all breathed a sigh of relief. The next day I was so happy and so tired. Thinking it was all over made me sad. All our hard work and all our costumes and characters were gone I certainly will remember this as my first ever performance when I hopefully am a successful actor. Edward

YEAR 1 HEVER CASTLE VISIT On Wednesday Year 1 made their way to Hever Castle. As the sun shone brightly, the children stood in amazement as they glanced up at the 700 year old castle that stood before them. The children then embarked on an adventure into the castle itself and made their way across a real drawbridge! They saw the portcullis on their way through but luckily this did not come down!
STUNNING STARTER - SIR TEACHALOT On Wednesday 11th January 2017 we had our stunning start. A man came into school to teach us about the Vikings and Saxons. His name was Sir Teachalot. The first thing we did was look at a map of the UK and Sir Teachalot showed us where the Saxons decided to come and live in England, Wales and Scotland and how the romans lived in lots of different places around England. Next we played boys against girls to see who can guess the riddle. I found it really fun, mostly because we won. After that we made up our own riddles, then we had lunch. Over lunch we thought of some riddles we could say up at the front of the hall. After lunch we got taught about a special sword that the Saxons used. It was a sword that broke very easily. It was meant for cutting peoples skin and couldn’t go through armour that the rich people would have worn. The poor people wore a dress and a stick for a weapon.
As the children approached the courtyard, the tour guides drew their attention to special features that were hidden within to help keep the enemy out! The children explored many different rooms within Hever Castle and got to climb up a spiral staircase too! It was a wonderful day out enjoyed by all who attended and the children represented RSM beautifully.
The last thing we did was cut cabbages with the Saxon sword. I thought that bit was the most fun of all. Everyone got a go at cutting the cabbage. I cut it all the way through! There are some interesting facts I want to share with you; - King Harold was the last Saxon king. - He lost the Battle of Hastings against William the Conqueror in 1066. - The Saxons lived in Essex, Sussex and Wessex. RECEPTION SPRING IS HERE!
A VICTORIAN SERVANT Yesterday, I went to this amazing mansion called Preston Manor to apply for a job as a fourth maid but you could choose a kitchen maid, footman or an odd job man. We got into Preston Manor and started with standing in a line (it was a bit scary going in). Mrs Storey and Miss Rose were very strict. Mrs Thomas-Stanford had a lot of pictures of dogs, she thought of them as her children (ha, ha). The first thing Mrs Storey did is that she took us into the kitchen to make jam tarts. She was impressed with my cooking but I was still worried if I was going to get the job. Some other people were doing something else, I was so scared. Then we went to polish shoes, they were very dirty so it was very difficult. After we finished these chores we followed Miss Rose into her room. Me and a girl called Bibi were cleaning and scrubbing the fireplace, it was very difficult and Mss Rose was staring at us so I was very scared!” I was so scared because I didn’t know if I was going to get the job. I was so nervous but I didn’t get the job so I was very disappointed. Bridget
Dear Diary You’ll never guess what happened today, I went to get a good job! So we met a super strict head house maid, Mrs Story and less super strict, Miss Rose. They were rude acting like they were the king or something! Anyway, I went to the dining room to sort the cutlery. Wow! They shouted at us if we didn’t put them straight, no joke! Moving on to the drawing room or the ‘with’ drawing room to use its proper name. Thank god I didn’t apply to be an oddman as he had to go in the dusty attic and pull a whole chandelier up to be cleaned. Next was the staircase. A really fancy staircase and only Mr and Mrs Thomas Stanford could go up those stairs and it was full of portraits of their pets! Ok, its official! I am JEALOUS! Mrs Thomas Stanford has a most amazing bedroom. She has got a lock, a light and even an amazing bed. Its so unfair! John
AFRICA COMES TO REIGATE! On Monday 20th February 2017, Year 5 at Reigate St Mary’s had their marvellous middle, Africa day. They had this day because their topic this term is Africa and their teachers wanted them to know a bit more about it. They started the day with African drumming and the children learnt a simple African song. Once they had got the hang of the song they moved on to some dancing. Tyra one of the year 5 children said that she thought that the dances were very interesting and enjoyed them thoroughly . This day was led by an African man originally from Ghana who’s name was Kwame many of year 5 told me that this was a very interesting experience and that the day would not have been as fun without him. After they had learnt the dance some of the children were picked to act out a story but they weren’t allowed to talk, they were only allowed to dance. Many of the
children were very keen to get up and dance however some of them were not so keen. After a short break for lunch year 5 soon returned to Africa. In the afternoon year 5 turned their attention to African art . They started of with Kwame telling the children some of the different African symbols and what they meant . After that it was time for the children to make their own artwork. They were given a piece of their material, paint and some stamps and were told to design their own miniature African cloth. Once they had finished there masterpieces Kwame quoted ‘I am really pleased with you’re artwork and I hope you have enjoyed doing it.’ Overall all of the children said that that they really enjoyed the day and would do it again in a heart beat. Orlaith one of the year 5 girls said ‘I had a really fun day and I especially enjoyed the drumming.’
We have been busy outside looking for signs of Spring and recording them in different ways. We took pictures, drew pictures or wrote what we had seen. We have also planted “Rocket” and “Rudolph” potatoes and are eagerly awaiting signs of growth from them. The one we planted inside in a plastic bottle has loads of roots and is already shooting.

Year 2 Seed Investigation Our Year 2 budding scientists enjoyed learning about the features of fruits!
On Monday, the 27th February, the whole of year six escaped school, and escaped to the nearest Chinese restaurant for some pretty amazing food. The experience first began with starters, and we all took too much - I’m sure the China house had no more food for tomorrow- next were the mains, and even more children stuffed and not moving were to come! We came here to learn and see what is served in different areas of China, and also to have some of our questions answered by the family owning the establishment. My favourite dish was the dazzling chicken skewers, they were all gone in short time! In addition, the experience was one to never forget, what type of school agrees to take you out for a Chinese for your topic!!

Year 6 Silk Painting Chinese Silk Art - Anush’s explanation
YEAR 2 VISIT THE CHICKS Year 2 enjoyed visiting the chicks that hatched in the incubator in our science room.
The Process: Design Before we could create the actual thing, we had to design. I thought of a Yin Yang. Because there wasn’t much space I made a half sun with a yin yang in the middle and a dragon round it as I couldn’t fit a big enough yin yang.
Preparing the frame First I cut the silk to the right size (so that it came to the middle of the frame) and then used masking tape to attach it to the wood. The silk needed to be taut so we stretched it whilst taping it down.
Gutta We used a gel substance called gutta to draw the outline of the drawing and the border. I used black for the border and clear for the outlines.
I noticed that they had longer necks when we saw them this week. Some even have fluffy wings and some were flapping them! Lucy
Silk dye (paint) To colour the work, you use dye. First use the pipette to apply the paint to the pallet. Then use a small brush to dab the dye into the spaces between the gutta. Make sure there are no gaps between the gutta. The gutta blocks the dye from spreading past it.
I learnt that the chicks legs grow thicker and longer in their first week. They have wings that look more like a bird now too! Thomas

Removing from the frame As it waste a tricky job, the teacher - Mrs W took mine off for me. You must peel off the masking tape from the frame and then fold it over the edge of the silk.
They still looked fluffly and I enjoyed being with them. They were very cute. Khanak
Finishing touches I first cut a frame of card and then made a back with card too. I then used pva glue to attach the card to the silk.

4S ICE CREAM CHALLENGE
WORLD BOOK DAy ASSEMBLy 4S were given salt, milk shake, small plastic bags, gloves and teaspoons and asked to make ice cream. They were investigating the change of state between a liquid and a solid. The biggest question of the day was “Why do we need salt for making ice cream?”
Every group were successful and the 4S classroom became a production line and ice cream eatery for the afternoon. If you want to know the answer to the salt question – ask 4S.

Year 6 Librarians and Reading Leaders led our Book Day Assembly playing giant Top Trumps, which they had made, and reading selected poems. They performed well and had the whole school laughing. Each year group stood up and gave a twirl to show their lovely costumes! The assembly was brought to a close by the announcement of the Book Mark Competition winners. There were over 200 entries, but the librarians at RGS decided on the following worthy winners:

Everyone was given a book mark to take home to mark the day. Fabulous Costumes and Fantastic Reading! Children and staff all dressed up as characters from books. The classes paired up to read together. As Lauren said, “I loved performing the poem in assembly; it was something different to our normal assemblies. Reading to the younger kids was great fun. I love world book day.”

On Thursday 2nd March Mrs Bessant and Miss Shear were presented with a brand new class! This included Mr Willy Wonka, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and many more! Excitement filled the air as the children familiarised themselves with one another’s book character and it was wonderful to see the thought and effort that had gone into producing such stunning costumes. The children were given the opportunity to carry out shared reading with Year 5s and they thoroughly enjoyed this experience. It was super to see the older children supporting the younger ones with their reading.
TOM PALMER VISITS UPPER SCHOOL As part our our celebrations for World Book Day, Tom Palmer, the popular children’s author, visited the Upper School. He has had 40 books published, but he let the Upper School into a secret: he did not enjoy reading when he was a child! Tom revealed that his clever mum managed to get him hooked on reading through football. She bought him books about football and, because he was such a fan, he read them all eagerly.
When you see the author’s name on the spine of a book, it is easy to think that he or she must have found it easy to persuade a publisher to publish their book, but that is not true for most writers. Tom revealed that it had taken him 20 years to get a book published. What persistence! What a growth mindset!
* Tom also held a reading quiz, asking questions about books, the news and sport, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The eventual winners were Charlotte and Lilly. Tom answered questions about his writing. He commented afterwards, and all the staff agreed, that the questions were really interesting and revealed that Reigate St Mary’s children are already enthusiastic, well-informed readers!

2M were so spoilt on World Book Day. They went on a word hunt with 4S and then read to RF in the afternoon. All of the children loved sharing books with their friends in the school.
YEAR 5 AFRICAN ART This term year 5 have been leaning about Africa. As part of our topic in art we have been making fabulous African masks. We looked at some real African masks for inspiration. Some of the designs were very intriguing.
We started off by covering our masks with papier-mâché which was very messy .Then we waited for them to dry and while they were drying we drew some African patterns in our sketch book. Once the masks had dried we covered them with brown/black paint. After that we added our details which was hard but we ended up with some beautiful designs. Subsequently, we covered our masks in PVA glue. Unfortunately, most of it went on our hands instead of our masks! Finally we added hair and beads to our masks (we had the option not to). Everybody really enjoyed making their masks and we came out with some unique creations. Phoebe

YEAR 6 CHINESE ZODIACS Long ago, the Jade Emperor decided there should be a way of measuring time. On his birthday he told the animals there would be a race and that the first 12 animals across the finish line would have a year of zodiac named after them. Pietro
As we have been learning about China the teachers decided that we should have a go at making a Chinese Zodiac wheel with a spinning cover. First we had to research about the animals and their dates. Fun fact; we are in the year 2017 which is a Rooster! There is a story that has been passed down. Centuries and centuries later it still lives on. Here is the story: 13 animals had been chosen they were dog, cat, rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster and a pig The course was to swim in a river and get to a certain point. Many animals were kind and helpful, carrying them on their back. At the end some animals cheated, jumping off their backs. Here is the order of winners; the sly rat, clever ox, the fast tiger, jumping rabbit, slick dragon, slivering snake, hoax horse, grazing goat, cheeky monkey, great rooster, dancing dog and the not so slim pig. Unfortunately, the cat never made the top 12 due to not being able to swim. We took that story into our heads and created our amazing Chinese Zodiac wheel! Hannah
YEAR 6 PERSUASIVE WRITING White House White House Lane Washington D.C. America ELP 9AO Dear White House I would like to raise an idea for a ban to stop people killing endangered animals. I realise that they use things like elephant’s tusks for ivory or rhino’s horns for medicine. However, do they really need it? It is pitiful to think that these animals will be extinct. I love how we are trying to stop it – although we need more people. We need to keep these animals - we’re Aliens taking over the world – we’re not the only ones on this planet. I know you’re trying to make the world a better place but we’re going to die without them. Pursuing this further, we don’t want these animals to be wiped out; they are living just like us, they have feelings too! This will be an advantage for the animals, plus us, as it will stop global warming because it will stop people mining so animals still have land and extra. Also to stop people from buying animal skin rugs that are real. I know that chickens and cows aren’t endangered but we need to stop killing them so much. Would you like it if your family died to be eaten? I urge you to get people to half eating endangered animals – it’s just not cool. To sum it all up, these animals are going quicker and quicker and quicker. We need to act fast. I hope you will agree to this ban and just think would you like your species to be endangered? I suggest Queen Mary’s Lake as it is fresh and on the market. You are a superb Captain; you always know what to do. You have been with us for 17 years, and now is no exclusion. We know how sad you are since we lost Mercers Lake, and it has destroyed us as well. You deserve more. Secondly, if we do not sail, we will not get to the internationals and we will be distraught. We will gain no money (and no friends) because Saturday Club cannot be run, and neither can those sweaty hard working and excruciatingly fun Summer camps. Also, without the lake, some of our less loyal workers have started to complain about not being paid. In addition to that, Queen Mary’s will start to get dirty and if we buy it we will have to clean it ourselves. Mandy quotes “I love this company, and the people. However, I cannot work without money”. So to summarise if we cannot sail, we will not make it to the internationals, we will run out of money and no-one will want to work for us and Queen Mary’s is getting dirtier by the second. Shukokai Karate Federation National Championship 2017
On Tuesday 21st march we travelled to City of London Freemens school for our under 9 netball tournament. Our first match turned out to be the toughest which we lost 0-4. After that we got better and better beating Aberdour 5-0 and Banstead 8-0. We had two very close matches against Downsend and CLFS and drew them both 4-4. This meant we finished 3rd overall. Well done to all the girls.
9 RSM students participated at the National Championships in Birmingham on Saturday 11th March; Scarlett Lafe, Angelina Lafe, Shalini Kumar, Imogen Rudman, Archie MacRae, Emmeline Halliwell, Ella Westley, Leah Selvadurai and Scarlett Holmes. Well supported by parents and great team spirit by all contributed to their success of 11 medals. Angelina Lafe took gold in the Kata final and silver in the team Kumite final. Scarlett Holmes took Silver in the team Kumite with Angelina. Ella Westley and Emmeline took silver in the final unison Kata and Emmeline also took bronze in individual kata. Imogen Rudman, Shaline Kumar and Scarlett Lafe took the bronze in team Kumite. Scarlett Lafe took the bronze in individual Kumite and was awarded an additional special medal presented by Shihan Daniels for the Junior with best fighting spirit.
yEARS 3&4 HOUSE NETBALL A great afternoon of competitive netball. Well done to Hobson who managed to win all three matches. Malcomson were second losing only to Hobson by two goals to one a very close game. Well done to Searle and Osmond who came third and 4th respectively. All the girls worked extremely hard for their house.
yEAR 3 NETBALL On Saturday 11 March the U8A netball team attended their first tournament at Lingfield . It was a beautiful spring morning and we were all very excited. Our first game was against Lingfield which we won 10-1 showing some excellent teamwork. Next we faced Royal Russell which turned out to be our greatest challenge of the season. It was a very exciting and fast paced game and the girls showed some excellent tight defending. The shooters were also on fire with almost every opportunity converted into a goal. After a tense second half at the final whistle the girls were delighted to win 6-4. The last game was against Oakfield of Dulwich and the girls showed some great perseverance and teamwork and again we managed to win 5-4, meaning we had won the tournament. An excellent performance by the entire squad.

UNDER 8 PENNTHORPE RUGBy TOURNAMENT
On the 2nd of March, the U11A squad gave up our World Book Day to compete in the IIAPS netball tournament 2017. All of us were nervous and excited on the journey there. When we arrived some of the girls were very tall! Nobody knew what was to be expected of the long day ahead of us. We coped amazingly with the help of our lovely coaches, Mrs Eveleigh and Mrs Walters, who nagged about drinking lots and conserving our energy levels.
On Tuesday the 14th of March year 3 A&B went to Pennthorpe school for a rugby tournament. It was a nice sunny day and both teams played excellent in their matches. The B team won 2, lost 2 and drew 1 game which was fantastic. The A team won 3 and lost 2 and played well together. It was a great afternoon and we enjoyed it. Thank you to our coaches Mr Forsyth and Mr Hilton and to our parents who came to watch. Buddy and Hamish

The year 6 rugby season was absolutely amazing. All teams did fantastically well wining some and sadly losing others. All the teams won at least one game which is great.
SURREy SCHOOLS HOCKEy CUP This was a tough morning of competition with a high level of skill on display. Unfortunately, it was not our day drawing one match and losing two meant we did not progress to the knockout phase this time. But well played girls, you never gave up. RSM school rugby teams are very strong now which means it was really hard for the teachers to choose all the teams. Unfortunately the C team had so many called of matches they didn’t play any matches so some of them were called up to the B team! The B team played a lot of matches winning all of them! Well done to all the C team players who stepped up to the B team. Well done to the A team who competed at Caterham school tournament. They came 3rd out of 4 teams but played really well. The A team also competed in a round robin against Caterham and Aberdour. They won both matches and so did the B’s. Well done to everyone that took part in this hard term of rugby. On Thursday 9th March we played our Year 3&4 House rugby matches. It was a lovely day. We were split into groups A and B and played the other houses. Some children kindly played for other houses for a game or two to help out as there were some children away. All the houses played three matches, everyone played very well in their games. Overall the results were: 1st Hobson, 2nd Osmond, 3rd Searle and 4th Malcomson. Well done to everyone!
On the 13th of march the cross country team headed off to Hartswood to race against other schools. Everyone tried their absolute hardest and did so well. Lots of pupils did well and got some medals. Here are some of the people who got medals:
Henry Russ, Sophia Clark and Emily Burke. The U10 boys got the overall shield and so did the U11 girls, unfortunately we didn’t win the overall big shield but everyone did really well.

On Saturday 4th March, the U7A football team travelled to Hawthorns School to play in a mini football tournament. The boys had a super day. They won one, drew four and lost one. Congratulations boys on your outstanding playing and impeccable behaviour.
YEAR 2 VISIT HAWTHORNS This term, Year 2 had the opportunity to visit Hawthorns to play some team sports. The boys played football and the girls played netball. They all had a super time and enjoyed catching up with some friends outside of school. Owen I liked playing football and scoring goals. Anna I liked defending and having afternoon tea. Charlotte I enjoyed being in the middle at the start because I got to see who got the ball.
Adeola Alabi I went to Hawthorns. They were very Kind there and us made us feel welcome. Jake Greenland I liked tackling players in football. Elizabeth Margetts I liked the warm up game at the beginning.
