Bamfords auction fever THE HOUSE OF THE MOUSE LEADS DEMAND AT NEW HOME AND COUNTRY AUCTION. amfords Summer House and Garden auction caused a stir when the Rowsley Saleroom, 20 minutes from Sheffield’s Westside, had standing room only to receive the 800 lots. Auctioneer for the day was Bamfords Director and TV presenter James Lewis, who declared the Saturday sale a roaring success. “We targeted the sale at a mixed group of collectors and private buyers and with prices ranging from ÂŁ50 to ÂŁ20,000 there was something for every pocket, but successful buyers were not limited to the South Yorkshire and Derbyshire areas as 25per cent of items found successful buyers from overseas via the internet bidding,â€? he said. Amongst the sale highlights was a fabulous collection of Mouseman furniture, something the saleroom has a reputation for since the world record ÂŁ46,000 for a fabulous dining suite c.1935. The now world famous mouse signature without question adds to the appeal of this great Yorkshire maker. It was not only the furniture that caught the buyers’ attention. A collection of sporting guns

A weekend to remember CLEAR YOUR DIARY... CHATSWORTH COUNTRY FAIR RETURNS THIS MONTH AND PROMISES FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. BY HANNAH SANDERS. elebrity chefs, diving dogs and heroic horsemanship will provide some of the exciting entertainment packed into this year’s Chatsworth Country Fair, which takes place on the stunning Derbyshire estate set against the gleaming stonework of the newly restored house. Between 31 August and 2 September, they’ll provide an unforgettable, action-packed schedule of activities for all the family to enjoy. Returning to the Grand Ring this year are JCB’s ten tonne Dancing Diggers. This team of demonstrators are experts in driving diggers, making them do the most impressive moves, all with elegance and split-second precision. They’ve curtsied for the Queen, performed hand-stands on our TV screens, and now they are bringing their jaw-dropping dance moves to Chatsworth. Also back are the Household Cavalry Musical Ride whose riders will perform a set of complex drill

From helter skelters to parachutists and cooking to cars, there’s plenty to entertain everyone
movements that showcase the skill, courage, precision and discipline of both horse and rider, all to a musical backdrop. As part of the display, the riders, who are in full ceremonial regalia, lie on the ground with their horses to mimic a classical battlefield manoeuvre. And with fanfares to start and end the display, this is a sight to linger in the memory. There is plenty of aerial entertainment at the fair with flypasts by the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flights, as well as breathtaking aerobatics from the Global All-Stars and parachuting precision from The British Legion Extreme Human Flight Team. One of the country’s largest hot air balloon lifts will be setting off each day (weather dependent) in the early morning and at dusk, flying over the river Derwent and parkland, providing a majestic site across the countryside. In celebration of the countryside, animals naturally take a starring role, whether it’s the adorable ponies taking part in the high-speed mounted games, the terrier race, hounds parade or the falconry display. And new this year is the K9 Aqua Sports, featuring all kinds of aquatic canine competition. Dogs will jump from a deck into a large swimming pool and compete against each other in the long jump, high jump and the sprint. Changes to the Country Fair this year see the Fine

Food Village and the Stoves Cookery Demonstration Theatre moved to a bigger location in front of the house. Always a crowd favourite is the chance to experience first-hand some of the nation’s favourite chefs whipping up delicious culinary delights. This year the live demos are headlined by Great British Bake Off ’s Nadiya Hussain (Friday), Mary Berry CBE (Saturday) and Paul Hollywood (Sunday) along with some of the region’s most inspirational chefs including Justin Rowntree (SweetSpot Hospitality Consultant) Chris Hanson (Blend Kitchen) and Natasha Farrell (The Library). Event organiser Sarah Green said: “The incredible diversity of things you can see and do as a family at the show are what makes this event so special. Whether you want to sit back and be entertained, or get stuck into all manner of activities from the gentle through to the more energetic, there are options for everyone – even the four-legged family member.” There’s lots on offer for children too. Full of grace CB’s ten tonne ballerinas have curtsied for the Queen, pirouetted on our TV screens and thrilled thousands all over the world. And this year, the team of mechanical dancers – weighing over 80 tonnes – will bring their elegant dance moves to Chatsworth Country Fair’s Grand Ring. The diggers are experts at synchronised dancing, and their spilt-second precision will be keeping the whole family on the edge of their seats as they watch the vehicles perform handstands and perform ‘The Wheel’. Ahead of their Chatsworth performance, Matthew Lucas, captain of the Dancing Diggers, talks history of the diggers, his favourite dance moves and what he’s most looking forward to about the country fair.

Tell me about Dancing Diggers.
JCB was founded by Lord Bamford in 1945 and has grown from a small garage business into the world’s biggest privately-owned construction equipment company. In the sixties they built a new model, and Lord Bamford had some customers come to the factory. When customers used to come to the factory, they would get out of the helicopter into a car, but this time he did something a bit different, asking an engineer to stand a machine up and park the car
How did you become involved in Dancing Diggers?
I’ve been with Dancing Diggers for 13 years now, and I’m really honoured to be the captain. Before I came to JCB I was an auto electrician by trade, but as a little boy I had always wanted to become a digger driver for JCB. A job came up and I applied but although I had all the credentials I couldn’t

actually drive the diggers so they offered to take me on as an apprentice. Gradually I worked my way up, and I never expected to become the captain for the Dancing Diggers – it really is a dream come true. Being part of the Dancing Diggers is just fantastic. The lads you work with are fantastic, you meet interesting people and get to go all over the world with the company. How do you choreograph the performances?
Every show has something different in it, and we can do the performance on any kind of surface – even ice. It’s important for us to tailor the show to the venue, as they are all different sizes, which sometimes limits which machines we can use. We usually use a range of different products in our shows, including JCB 3CX, 3CX Compacts, Loadall and our new product, a Hydradig. When planning a show we have to take the weather into account, as because we are diggers we need to be careful of the grounds. Being the captain, I am in the flagship vehicle and I also have a wingman. I then split the team into two with three diggers going with me and three with my wingman. I’ve also changed a few things, one of them being how we salute. We used to just salute to either the members or the main grandstand but now I have adapted it so the diggers go to each corner and wave and salute to everybody. What is one of your favourite moves?
One of them is called ‘The Wheel’. It involves four on one side, four on the other and we go round slowly in a wheel. At the same time we have smoke going on in different colours – usually relating to the country we are in. I also really like the wedding arch, which is where we all stand up together forming an arch and then one machine drives underneath.
What are some of your most memorable moments?
I’ve done some work with Top Gear Live which was incredible. We did a show in Poland where we had to come into the arena, stand the diggers up as quick as possible and then a car comes underneath spins around and goes through backwards. It was nerve-wracking but definitely one of my favourite shows and manoeuvers. Chatsworth Country Fair is one of my favourites too as it is just such a fantastic atmosphere and everybody is treated like family. What’s some of the most enjoyable things?
First and foremost is seeing the audience reaction, I just love it when you can bring a smile to their face and they all join in clapping and waving at us. Also, I really just enjoy being the captain as it is such an honour to be part of JCB and the Dancing Diggers. We are number one for machines in the world and to be able to show off what we can do and also our products is just fantastic. Touching on Chatsworth, what are you most looking forward to about the performance?
I’ve been building on the routine over the past couple of years to bring something new to the Fair. This year I would like to use eight machines and just wow the audience. For me, I really look forward to working with the staff and audience and if it’s anything like last time, I know it’s going to be brilliant. I just can’t wait to get there now and showcase what JCB and the Dancing Diggers can do. Outside of the Grand Ring, what do you enjoy at Chatsworth?

Culinary heroes FOOD WILL BE PLAYING A STARRING ROLE AT CHATSWORTH THIS YEAR WITH A GREAT MIX OF WELL-KNOWN AND LOCAL CHEFS. HANNAH SANDERS LOOKS AT WHAT’S IN STORE. adiya Hussain, Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry are the star TV chefs lined up to share their culinary expertise at this years’ Chatsworth Country Fair. One of the country’s best loved cookery writers and TV presenters, Mary Berry will be taking centre stage on Saturday for her sixth return visit with two demos and book signings. She is also this year’s president following in the footsteps of Adam Henson, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Alan Titchmarsh and JB Gill. Mary said: “I am delighted to return to the wonderful Chatsworth Country Fair. It’s an amazing day out for all the family in a magnificent setting. There’s a miscellany of spectacular events and demonstrations, brilliant trade stands and plenty of activities and experiences for the young.” Appearing at Chatsworth for the first time is Nadiya Hussain, who’ll kick things off on Friday with three demos and book signings. Born in Luton, Nadiya has been baking for over ten years, and developed her skills as a baker during home economics. She’s now an established TV presenter and author, and with her latest book and series, Nadiya’s Family Favourites, it will be a treat to see her in action.

Returning for the third time is the nation’s favourite bread maker Paul Hollywood, who’ll be both informing and entertaining with his demonstrations. The son of a baker, Paul originally trained as a sculptor before his father persuaded him to join the family business, and he’s gone on to become one of the country’s finest and well-known artisan bakers. Once again, the pick of the region’s talented chefs have been invited to take part in the line-up which runs from 9.30am to 5.30pm in the Stoves Cookery Theatre each day. This year’s line-up includes Adam Harper, head chef of Rowley’s in Baslow; Tim Sidaway, a chef who has spent over a decade promoting, growing and rearing local food; Eva Humphries, the Wholefood Warrior; and The Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa’s head chef Paul Leonard. There’ll also be some demonstrations from some of Sheffield’s finest including Chris Hanson (Blend Kitchen), Natasha Farrell (The Library), Justin Rowntree (SweetSpot Hospitality Consultancy) and Charlie Curran (Peppercorn Restaurant). We talked to them about their businesses, culinary heroes, cooking inspiration and what visitors can expect from them at this year’s Country Fair.

JUSTIN ROWNTREE SweetSpot Hospitality Consultant www.sweetspot.life After a degree in psychology and a ten-year career in global recruitment, Justin’s entrepreneurial spirit drove him to open a bar/restaurant in Sheffield. During the 2008 recession his business was on the rocks but, after a transformational Kitchen Nightmares encounter with Gordon Ramsay, Justin transformed the business creating the popular Silversmiths Restaurant. In 2017, Justin left Silversmiths to start SweetSpot Hospitality Consulting where he focuses on restaurant trouble-shooting, coaching and mentoring restaurant owners. Who is your culinary hero and why? Gordon Ramsay of course, as I wouldn’t be here today without him. I have no idea where my business journey would have ended without his input.
What’s one of the most enjoyable things about your job? Being able to use the 12 years of learning the hard way to help others achieve their goal quicker. The most rewarding thing is coaching business owners and nurturing teams to perform their best and realise their potential. What are you most looking forward to about Chatsworth? Compering again at The Cookery Theatre. I have six demos this year so I have my work cut out. It’s always a great atmosphere in the marquee and having an eager foodie audience is fantastic. What can people expect from the Stoves Cookery Theatre? Apart from having food royalty, there’s always something to learn. Whether that’s the latest trends – like plant-based dishes – or the best in seasonal cooking, hopefully everyone will take away something.
Who are your culinary heroes? Nico Landinnis, Roux Brothers, Raymond Blanc, Thomas Keller and Anthony Bourdain. Reading about their journeys and the drive they have to fulfil their ambitions just gave me the strength and confidence to take on the challenge of opening Blend Kitchen.
CHRIS HANSON Blend Kitchen www.blendcookeatshare.com Chris Hanson is a born and bred Sheffielder, and after an appearance on The Restaurant with French chef Raymond Blanc, he was inspired to open Blend Kitchen. Sheffield based, this is a social enterprise with a vision to use cuisine and hospitality to enhance people’s lives. Chris’s vision was realised when his city centre restaurant opened in June 2018, with a cuisine based on the multi-cultural fabric of Sheffield. What inspired you to start a career as a chef? Family, simply – food was always a key at family events and it brought us all together, so I saw the way food created and strengthened relationships.
What do you find most enjoyable about cooking? The ability to be creative every day. There’s nothing better than going to the Moor Market with an empty bag and then filling it with all the wonderful offerings. I also love the camaraderie of the team, when front of house staff work as one it makes you feel invincible. My staff includes those with learning difficulties, refugees, parents returning to work, ex-offenders and those who are long-term unemployed. They are all wonderful, totally unique and inspire me very single day. Where does your cooking inspiration come from? Right now, the people I work with at Blend Kitchen are all from varied cultural and ethnic backgrounds and they are just an amazing inspiration. Also, the great local producers and farmer who supply us are all so versatile and tasty. What dishes will you be demonstrating at Chatsworth? I’ve been exploring plant-based cuisine so I’ll be demonstrating that. I’ll be showcasing our vegan dishes of distinction that reflect Blend Kitchen’s cultural diversity.

NATASHA FARRELL The Library Natasha Farrell is part owner and head chef at The Library, a new venue due to open this September in the heart of Attercliffe, Sheffield. Housed in the oldest library in Sheffield, this is a joint venture with Aaron Stewart and David Slater. The Library is a place for music, entertainment and most importantly, a diverse food menu promising to be colourful, healthy and packed with love. What inspired you to become a chef? I’ve always loved food, and as a young girl I would always be shouted down from my room to watch my dad cook. He seemed to be able to cook anything with ease and swagger and although he could cook most things he always went back to his roots cooking West Indian food. What do you enjoy most about cooking? There’s nothing better in the world than gathering people together and eating. I love to cook and all that passion goes into what I make. Each particular step of cooking is enjoyable; from the preparation and stirring the pot through to plating up.
What’s your favourite recipe? Ackee and saltfish – a very typical Caribbean dish. The ackee fruit was imported to the Caribbean from Ghana before 1725 and is now Jamaica’s national fruit. The dish is traditionally served with rice but of course, I cook mine with a twist using a recipe I developed of my dad’s. What are you looking forward to about Chatsworth? I haven’t been to the Fair before so I’m looking forward to the experience as a whole, although I am slightly nervous as I wasn’t aware of the scale of the event. We’ll be taking the team from The Library and this is our first outing together as a team, so we’re looking forward to meeting new people and shouting about our new venue. And, of course I can’t wait to be among some amazing chefs like Mary Berry. What can visitors expect from you in the Cookery Theatre? Some would say I’m not a typical chef and I don’t intend to do anything different with my style at Chatsworth. I’m a proud Yorkshire lass with a Caribbean heritage, and I just love cooking food where every element can be tasted in each bite. Visitors can expect lots of laughter, dancing and plenty of smiles from my demos.

What are some of your favourite ingredients to cook with? This could change daily if not hourly, but fresh fish and vegetables are always great to cook with. At the moment I am playing around with some recipes involving pickles and kimchi. What’s one of your favourite recipes? My chicken liver parfait – it’s been a main staple at nearly every place I have cooked. Where does your cooking inspiration come from? This is something that is continuous, and shopping trips

Make a splash FROM POOL JUMPING TO GUNDOG SCURRYING, THERE’LL BE PLENTY OF CANINE ACTION AT CHATSWORTH, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. n true celebration of the countryside, animals naturally take a starring role at the Chatsworth Country Fair. And this year it’s our four-legged friends that are in the spotlight. New to the Fair for 2018, is the K9 Aqua Sports, which will feature all kinds of aquatic canine competition and promises to provide your pup (and you) with heaps of enjoyment. K9 Aqua Sports is the UK and Europe’s largest independent canine aquatic and dock diving event and competition company, and they put on a show that’s about having fun with your best friend. They are innovators at creating more dog-friendly water sports competitions, using the dock and pool. Dock jumping is a fully interactive sport, where the dog and handler work together as a team to improve their skills, entertain themselves and friends and family and above all have fun. At Chatsworth dogs will jump from a deck into a large swimming pool, compete against each other in the long jump, high jump and the sprint. As well as being great fun to watch, there’s also the chance to put your own dog to the test. K9 Aqua Sports is a truly unforgettable dog sport, and it’s open to all dogs, of any breed, size and ability as long as they are over six months old. The doggy fun doesn’t stop there though, as it wouldn’t be the country fair without the popular family fun dog show. This year the classes include; best puppy (any breed), best sporting dog, best any variety, best rescued, dog in the best condition, dog with the waggiest tail, best child handler (under 12s) and much more – so give your four-legged pal a good old brush, don on your best jacket and get entering. Gundogs love to work, and to celebrate their endeavour Chatsworth have organised several competitions to test their speed and handling skills. And they even have a race for novices. The gundog scurries cost £2 per go, and the Chatsworth Challenge is £8 to enter. Not sure which one to enter? Have a look at the round-up so you and your dog can get training.

Gundog Scurries Multi Pick-Up This scurry requires the dog and the handler to work together to retrieve five canvas dummies in the fastest time. Don’t worry as the clock stops in between retrieves. The Water Scurry This event promises to be great for all water loving gundogs. The competition requires two dummies to be retrieved in the fastest time across the River Derwent. Up and Over This involves a series of straw bale jumps with a dummy to retrieve from the end. The Mixed Double A two dummy retrieve against the clock. Novice Mixed Double A two dummy retrieve against the clock – open to those who’ve never had a go at scurrying before.
Junior Scurries The up and over and the two dummy scurry are open to visitors under 16 only. The Chatsworth Challenge The challenge incorporates all four events, and the dog that completes all four scurries in the fastest time, over the three days, will become the Chatsworth Challenge Gundog Champion. If your dog isn’t a gundog but still wants to try their luck, worry not as you can have-a-go for fun at the gundog scurries no matter what breed.

“We also wanted the opportunity to design a look that would be individualised to our home and taste rather than follow the limited options we had seen elsewhere.
Annette settled on the second design as it achieved a bigger and more minimalist shower enclosure. And, Natalie also created a beautiful vanity unit alongside adding two Laufen basins on a quartz worktop. The products included Villeroy & Boch, Hansgrohe, Keuco, Vogue and Laufen, and all were to a high specification along with the finish which Bubble & Soak also provided. This all resulted in a stunning transformation. The first evidence dates back at least 5,000 years to Ancient Egypt, where the rings were made from braided reeds, the complete circle representing eternity. The rings quickly degraded so reeds were soon replaced by more durable materials such as leather and bone. In the Roman Empire, iron was a common choice although wealthier people used gold; the ring was an important part of the marriage contract between families. It was worn on the fourth finger of the bride’s left hand, still the traditional ring finger, because it was believed that a vein known as the ‘Vena Amoris’ ran directly from this finger to the heart. Although disproved by science, this romantic notion is still often cited as a reason for wearing the wedding ring in this position. The tradition became absorbed into the Christian marriage ceremony during the Middle Ages. Over the centuries more precious metals were used and designs increased in complexity with valuable materials acting as a demonstration of wealth. Gemstones were added to the designs, special messages engraved and detailed scrollwork and patterns carved into the bands. Only in the twentieth century did it become commonplace for men to wear wedding rings. During World War II, soldiers who were away fighting overseas chose to wear a ring as a comforting reminder of their loving families back home. Subsequently, jewellery for men became more fashionable and it is now so expected that when Prince William chose

not to have a wedding ring, it made the news! Wartime economising was also one of the reasons why plain bands became popular. Additionally, more simple designs enabled people to wear their ring all the time, and as women were increasingly receiving engagement rings, the wedding ring did not need to be so ornate. The yellow gold D-shape band became the default choice for most of the twentieth century. Nowadays, the range of options available for wedding rings is enormous and many people are personalising their choice. Precious metals such as gold and platinum are still most common, but alternatives like titanium are increasingly popular. A huge array of patterns and finishes are available, with or without diamonds or other gemstones. Many brides are choosing to match their engagement ring with a wedding band handmade to fit or a design that echoes the shape, profile and style of the existing ring. We have certainly come a long way since the braided reeds of the Ancient Egyptians, but the meaning remains very much the same. Taylor & Emmet While we’ve been basking in the heat this summer, the local property market was playing it cool. The latest UK data shows a fairly consistent picture and around here, we’re enjoying a largely stable outlook. In my experience, this demonstrates we’re perhaps less vulnerable to the vagaries affecting property prices elsewhere. Land registry figures indicate house prices in Sheffield have increased by 6.6 per cent, with similar rises in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales. Other areas, such as Chesterfield and North Derbyshire fared less well, with the latter recording a decline of 0.7 per cent. Although tax changes have deterred some would-be landlords from entering the market, first time buyers are returning - they accounted for more than eight per cent of new mortgages from May 2017 18. When it comes to self-promotion, they’re some of the best around. Want a Reyt Good CurrehTM? Thanks to their quirky, clever, and often funny, advertising campaigns, it’s the first place that springs to mind. Having been open for just over 50 years – they’re proudly one of the city’s oldest curry houses – this is a restaurant that moves with the times and has made great strides under the ownership of Rahul Amin. Whether it’s in books, magazines or on social media, Ashoka embraces its Sheffieldness to the full – even trademarking the names of some of its dishes. But, above all, serve up some of the best Indian food in the city. There’s definitely substance behind all that style. The interior is cosy and contemporary – think Rajasthani railway meets cool café – but doesn’t feel at all cramped. If we were expecting a quiet Monday night, we were quickly proved wrong as the restaurant was packed. It seems, even despite the heatwave, the good folk of Sheffield can’t get enough curreh™. As we nibbled on some poppadoms, with

glasses of Cobra (£6) and Abbeydale Heathen (£4.50) in hand, we took our cues from Rahul who recommended we try some smaller portions of a handful of dishes – who were we to argue? It was a great opportunity to try something different and sample dishes that perhaps we wouldn’t have normally chosen. Starters of black pepper prawn puri (£6) – light and delicate; and mustard pepper lamb chops (£6.50) – tender and punchy; kicked off proceedings before a veritable feast of main courses. Rahul described the Wedding Day Chicken Curry™ (£12.50) as the ‘staff curry’; it’s what they tend to eat at the end of a shift and you can see why. Cooked on the bone, the chicken was deliciously tender, coated in a flavoursome, moreish sauce mopped up with chunks of garlic naan bread (£3). Delicious. Elsewhere, a lamb Karamelised Kashmiri™ (£12.50) had a jammy fruitiness that contrasted well to the spice kick from a classic chicken Kalcutta Karai™ (£11.50), whilst ginger brinjal (£10) – baby vine aubergines with fresh ginger – had real depth and garlic palak (£4.50) – fresh spinach
leaves with chunky garlic – added further texture and flavour. The best thing, for me, was that you could taste the difference between all of them. The subtleness of the use of different spices was superb. Service throughout the evening was excellent and little things like the expanding hot towels and complimentary Parle-G biscuits all added to the relaxed, enjoyable, and ultimately tasty, experience. No-fault divorce – where are we now? BRADIE PELL, PARTNER AND HEAD OF GRAYSONS’ FAMILY TEAM, REVIEWS THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN A CONTROVERSIAL LEGAL ISSUE. espite the support of some senior members of the judiciary, much of the legal profession, Resolution and a campaign in the Times newspaper, no-fault divorce is still not available to couples in England and Wales. In what has been a very high profile case – Owens v Owens – the Supreme Court has recently upheld the Family Court’s and Appeal Court’s decision that Mrs Owens should not be granted a divorce. However, in passing judgement, judges said the decision felt uneasy and troubling. The introduction of no-fault divorce requires a change in the law. Attempts have been made, the last one in 1996 when trials were set up. However, in 2001 the government decided that the proposed system was ‘unworkable’, dropped it and repealed the Act, saying that it was committed to exploring the introduction of no-fault divorce. The government has since indicated that legislation to introduce no-fault divorce must come as part of further reform of the family justice system. Currently, divorce can only be granted if it can be shown that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, based on one of three fault-based reasons (adultery, unreasonable behaviour and desertion) or two separation-based reasons (two years’ separation with the agreement of the other party or five years’ separation without the agreement). Research shows that couples may cite divorce as a quicker way out of a marriage. 2016 Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show that 57.7 per cent of all divorces were based on fault. Compare this to Scotland, where a divorce can be obtained

after one year if both parties agree, and where only six per cent of divorces were based on fault (2015 statistics). Nuffield Foundation’s survey found that 29 per cent of respondents in fault-based divorces said the reason given was not accurate and 65 per cent of petitioners said that it only closely matched the actual reason for the divorce. This research also says that 62 per cent of petitioners and 78 per cent of respondents said that citing fault had made the process more bitter. The research found no evidence that people would rather stay married than cite fault as the reason for their relationship breakdown. 2015 YouGov research found that 27 per cent of couples who cited fault in their divorce said that the reason given was not accurate but that it was the easiest way to get a divorce. Sir James Munby, president of the Family Division and a supporter of no-fault divorce believes that divorce should be dealt with by a registrar rather than a judge, as births, deaths and marriages are. He also believes that no-fault divorce would not make divorce easier, as, in reality we already have divorce by consent, in that both parties want the divorce. He says that if couples are “able to establish the grounds for divorce, which is very easy, the process is essentially a bureaucratic, administrative process.” The late Sir Nicholas Wells, former president of the Family Division, Baroness Hale of Richmond, president of the Supreme Court, and Supreme Court judge, Lord Wilson of Culworth, have also shown support for no-fault divorce. In 2015, MP Richard Bacon made a case for a new no-fault divorce bill under the ‘ten
minute rule’. The bill did not proceed any further. Resolution has long called for blame to be removed from the divorce process. It proposes a system where both parties give notice that the marriage has broken down and, if they haven’t changed their minds after six months, the divorce is finalised. It believes that this will increase the chance of resolution without going to court and reduce the burden on the family courts. The Times’ ‘Family Matters’ campaign, which was launched in November 2017 with the Marriage Foundation, calls for family law to be modernised. The campaign is supported by many in Parliament, including Lord Mackay of Clashfern and Barroness ButlerSloss. Bradie Pell, partner and head of Graysons’ family team says: “No-fault divorce could reduce acrimony and provide relief for families trying to sort out children and financial matters. Timeless style EYAM HALL’S ELEGANT NEW DINING VENTURE IS STEEPED IN HISTORY AND IS AN IMMEDIATE HIT, SAYS CHRIS WILSON. ith its stripped back less-is-more décor, where plain stone walls meet bare wooden floors, we could have been dining in the latest achingly hip Kelham Island diner, Sheffield’s go-to venue for all things contemporary and urban. But these trappings of modernism were not the whim of the latest on-scene interior decorator. As part of Eyam Hall, a grand Jacobean-style manor house dating back to 1672, they were simply standing the test of time. And when fashion moves on, as it must, and something more ornate and fussy is all the rage elsewhere, this rather gorgeous looking restaurant will still look exactly right. Recently returned to family ownership after a spell in the care of the National Trust, Eyam Hall now has a dining venue to be ranked alongside the best in the region. We climbed a spiral staircase to The Stables, for a taste of elegant bistro dining in this cosy, relaxed setting. Downstairs is a smart, laid-back bar with seating spilling out into the courtyard, perfect for soaking up those early evening rays and enjoying a predinner cocktail or, in my companion’s case a pleasingly sharp mocktail of home-made lemonade (£3). It’s worth taking some time over a menu

that looks deceptively simple at first glance, but close inspection suggests some cheffy flourishes and a loving attention to detail when it comes to flair-filled food combinations. From the starter selections alone (or small plates, if you will) dishes such as asparagus with crispy egg, truffle aioli and blue meat radish, or whipped Yorkshire blue with charred broccoli, parmesan and bloody Mary, cried out for further investigation. But on this occasion the soup of the day, a bracingly sharp stilton and broccoli number served with toasted sourdough and butter (£5) was absolutely spot on, not at all thick but bursting with flavour. Across the table wild mushroom tart (£7) was deconstructed but the flavours of parmesan pastry, cep sour cream, mushrooms and tarragon oil came together perfectly. Mains brought more examples of well thought-out dishes executed with precision. My venison haunch (£22) was tender, full of strong, complex flavour and, with its seared skin and deep purple flesh, an ideal match for the accompanying braised chicory, hasselback potatoes, confit turnip and blackberry sauce. Free range chicken (£14) had the allimportant combination of crispy, generously seasoned skin and meltingly soft flesh.
Crushed potatoes, ceps, garden vegetables and a delicately aromatic tarragon sauce completed a satisfying picture. There’s a fine selection of wine by the glass and the Italian Pinot Grigio Rose (£4.70) and Argentinian Malbec (£4.70) proved a fine accompaniment to these savoury delights. Desserts ensured we ended on a high note. Raspberry mousse (£6.50) was light, sweet with an edge of tartness; frozen chocolate tart (£7.50) was rich and deeply satisfying. From an impressive selection of dessert wines the Californian Elysian Black Muscat (£6) really hit the spot. Inspirational cancer survivor recognised for phenomenal fundraising achievement A man who started fundraising as a thank you for the life-saving treatment he received at Weston Park Hospital, has been recognised by Weston Park Cancer Charity staff for his dedication to supporting cancer patients locally. John Price, aged 64, from Sandygate has worked tirelessly over the last 14 years to repay the cost for the life-changing clinical drugs trial he received at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield – one of only four purpose built Cancer Centres in the UK. After John was faced with the devastating news that his cancer was terminal, he refused to accept it, and ultimately ended up participating in a clinical John Price and family with the trial that has extended his life greatly; enabling him team at Weston Park Hospital to see his sons through their education, qualify in their respected professions, get married and have children. As a thank you for the care he received, John vowed to raise £100,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity to repay the cost of his clinical drugs trial, but he has since surpassed that target, raising over £300,000. Commenting on being recognised by Weston Park Cancer Charity, John said: “I feel so humble. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff at Weston Park Hospital, and I wanted to do something to say thank you for the wonderful care I received. “Without my family and friends at Hallamshire Golf Club, this wouldn’t have been possible - thank you for your help. And thank you to Weston Park. I hope by sharing this, we can inspire others to fundraise on behalf of this very worthy cause.”
Huge food hall for Castle House Kollider Projects have teamed up with the folks at Peddler, Tamper and Depot Bakery to renovate the upper ground floor of the former Co-op department store inside Castle House to create a 16,000 square foot food hall. Hot on the heels of news of the British Gaming Institute’s move into Sheffield Kollider comes the announcement that the creative hub will also be home to 'several street food inspired independent food vendors, together with a bar, an area for private dining and a unique social work and event space.' The new Scandi-inspired food hall promises to be in the same vein as similar venues in other cities, such as Manchester’s Mackie Mayor, and will open early every morning to the aromas of Tamper’s coffee and Depot Bakery’s freshl croissants from late autumn.

before moving to Meadowhall and selling shoes there. Glen told us: “I worked for Jones Bootmaker for over 20 years so I do know footwear, but I also know the corporate side. The advantage we have is that we can react to a customer within days, and say, right, you want that we can get it for you. If you’re corporate you can only sell what you’ve got. “I was a customer here, and that’s the only reason I’m here. I was selling plastic ladies shoes in Meadowhall and I resigned. Initially I came for the afternoon, Nick (the owner) said come in and look at the ranges. I want to believe in what I’m selling and this is a product I believe in. Glittering golf on the Silver Coast PORTUGAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAVOURITE DESTINATION FOR GOLFERS … BUT THERE’S STILL LOTS OF GREAT COURSES TO DISCOVER. ortugal continues to attract UK golfers in their droves particularly to the Algarve, yet a relatively new course on the block has revitalised interest in the Silver Coast, situated about one hour’s drive North of Lisbon. Made popular for golfers 20 years ago when the Praia D’El Rey course and its upscale properties opened to wide acclaim, the area’s appeal received a major shot in the arm 12 months ago with the launch of the resort’s new course, West Cliffs Golf Links. The first Portuguese venture by US designer Cynthia Dye has rapidly cemented its place among Portugal’s finest, indeed it is tipped to become known as one of the best in the whole of the continental Europe. It was named ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ at the 2017 World Golf Awards. Word is getting around, and figures reveal that the Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf and Beach

Resort as it is known, is Portugal’s most popular golf destination outside of the Algarve. Business is booming with more than 33,000 rounds of golf played in the first five months this year on the two courses. Praia D’El Rey has seen a 2018 increase of more than seven per cent on green fees booked on the corresponding period last year – with bookings up by nearly 20 per cent in May alone. And the numbers are just as impressive at West Cliffs, with more than 14,000 rounds having been played this year. Its addition makes the Silver Coast an appealing location for golfers who like to play a few different tracks on their week away – just round the corner within easy reach are Royal Obidos Spa and Golf Resort and Bom Sucesso Golf. There are several ways to combine golf and accommodation and there are good deals to be had.
WEST CLIFFS Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf and Beach Resort www.praia-del-rey.com Cabell Robinson’s exceptional late-1990s layout at Praia D’El Rey has attracted visiting golfers since its inception and is famed for its challenge and variety. It opens in parkland style, but soon some great holes hugging the wild Atlantic coastline among sweeping sand dunes take you into links-style territory. It returns to a more heathland appearance, winding its way back to the clubhouse. It is no push over and indeed can be tough to play when the breeze blows off the beach. Better players will love it; the greens are true and it is an enjoyable test. West Cliffs Golf Links www.praia-del-rey.com West Cliffs has been created over 200 hectares of natural landscape and rolling sand dunes. Already been tipped to become the number one golf course in Portugal surpassing the Algarve’s Monte Rei. Being relatively new, it currently looks a little scruffy in parts, particularly over the first three holes, but as it matures and blends into its wild landscape it will become a masterpiece. Despite its youthful appearance, the fairways and greens are already in top shape, and the natural vegetation making up the rough is a pleasure on the eye, although a poor shot wide of the fairway will often lead to a lost ball. The stretch from holes four to eight is particularly appealing, though fairly difficult. Variety is evident throughout the course, including on the huge rolling greens that present a number of challenges. One word of warning. Whatever your standard, play off the forward tees or West Cliffs will destroy you.

FACTFILE: ROYAL OBIDOS Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort www.royalobidos.com Opened in 2012 it was the last course designed by Seve Ballesteros, and what a tribute to the great man it really is. It is described as a parkland/heathland hybrid which makes a nice contrast to the links-like courses of Praia de Rey and West Cliffs. It differs from those in offering water hazards all over but its similarities include perfect maintenance and slick, large and undulating greens. It features some great driving holes, notably the downhill par 5 2nd, and the well- placed water hazards will amuse – particularly the surrounding the island green on the par three 3rd, the extremely difficult 11th, and not least the spectacular finale on the 18th. It plays pretty long, so be warned, and it’s fairly hilly with leg-sapping distances from green to tee, so a buggy is advisable.
The Silver Coast This is largely an unspoiled part of Portugal’s fabulous Atlantic coastline with big beaches and crashing waves that make it a favourite of the surfing set who converge on the fishing port of Peniche, just 30 minutes drive from the Praia D’El Rey resort. Nearby is the old walled town of Obidos, unfortunately overrun by modern day tourism, but still worth a visit during a day off the course. Winemaking in the area is top notch and wines are inexpensive even in the wide range of restaurants that show traditional Portuguese cuisine at its best.

hey sat in the flickering candlelight, head in hands, studying their patient whose breathing laboured, hovering between life and death. They applied poultices, offered draughts of whisky and raw egg; sometimes Mother Nature cured the patient, sometimes she did not. The tough ones survived despite whatever the doctor could do. The poor ones could not afford the doctor in any case, so had even less chance of pulling through. I was fortunate to join the NHS in 1981, when I qualified from Sheffield Medical School, and I have witnessed first hand the plethora of changes taking place along my timeline, and continue to do so. Before the birth of the National Health Service, such was the life of the doctor who worked tirelessly, without break or respite, meeting face-to-face the raw illness which beset his patients but with little he could do about it. TB, cholera, smallpox, all took their toll in those early days. Then there came the beams of light which shone through the despair. Edward Jenner (1796) made his observations of milkmaids who contracted cowpox, which protected against the related smallpox – hence his development of the vital smallpox vaccine. Joseph Lister developed the antiseptic carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to sterilise surgical instruments and to clean wounds. This saved women after childbirth and patients having operations from the consequences of infections. The first penicillin antibiotic, which started development in Sheffield with Howard Florey in the 1930s, saved many a young soldier in WW2 from death from the consequences of trench gangrene. These gems were set in a background of socio-political developments such as increasing employment and improved housing, itself vitally underpinned by safe sanitation. The Victorians gained an understanding that health flowed from a clean water supply to the population, made so by the dirty water being kept separate from it. Middens were replaced by flushing toilets, thanks to the tireless work of Thomas Crapper of London, and a proper sewerage system as developed by Joseph Bazalgette (1858). However, after two World Wars the deprivation and difficulty took their toll on the people, and they suffered many infections

such as pneumonia and TB, scarlet fever and influenza. Increasing poverty meant increasing diseases, especially in the very young and the very old. Aneurin Bevan, Minister for Health in the UK from 1945-51, had been involved in a medical ‘insurance’ system for employees of a small Welsh mining town, and along with William Beveridge’s welfare proposals of 1942, developed the idea of a national health service, free at the point of delivery. ‘Nye’ Bevan’s quote referring to the NHS is well known: “Illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay, nor an offence for which they should be penalised, but a misfortune, the cost of which should be shared by the community.” On 5 July 1948, the birth of a National Health Service was announced with flourish and ceremony and received with great joy and relief by the people, in a time of post-war hardship. Bevan saw health as a basic human right and paid for through taxation. The concept of the ‘General Practitioner’ was born in the mid-1960s with a specific contract – a doctor who had previously worked alone or in small groups, now had the benefit of a team as they took on vital staff such as receptionists and nurses. GPs were

The doctor’s role changed bit by bit over this time. ‘He’ was partially replaced by ‘she’ as more women were accepted for medical training (currently more than half of medical students are women in Sheffield for example), working less than full time in many cases. The GP would have modern guidance to follow, based on evidence provided by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) from 1999. After qualifying as a doctor I had three years’ of GP training to complete, part of it in Barnsley District Hospital. I remember being called out one night in 1984 with the obstetric ‘flying squad’ to deliver a premature baby as an emergency at home, and our ambulance was held up by miners’ strikers. The ambulance was rocked about and stones thrown at the windows. Fortunately the baby survived. At the time I started out as a GP, 1 August 1985, at Walkley House Medical Centre, we had an excellent team of receptionists, nurses of different types, as well as five GPs. We have developed over this time, and won the Practice of the Year Award in November 2017

for teamwork. A few of those early staff still work with us, and the team has developed new skills as NHS changes demand. The doctor now looks upon the patient, the person in front of them, as a partner in the decision-making; that person often having consulted ‘Google’ first and possibly having his own fears and questions which need to be put in context. The doctor no longer is the father figure providing water-tight answers to all questions, but rather a point of information and advice, delivered on an individual basis for that specific person’s problems. Can this NHS be sustained in the face of increasingly sophisticated and expensive treatments and medical complexity as we all live longer? Now, almost half of people aged over 65 take five or more different drugs. There is evidence to show that people with several medical conditions are best served by a GP or practice of GPs who know them well and their team offers their different skills to support that person to maintain independence. The NHS needs to be able to sustain this type of care. I think the future of the NHS holds an increasing use of technology, more sophisticated treatments and drugs, further increases in preventive care and more of the services being delivered near the patient rather than in hospitals. RICHARD ABBEY FINDS PLENTY TO DO IN THE CAPITAL – AND THE PERFECT PLACE TO STAY. ou’d think after the pomp and ceremony of the recent royal wedding that Harry and Meghan would want to lay low for a while. You know, maybe kick back and relax in their cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace. So you could say it was a huge surprise when I ‘bumped’ into them on a recent trip to London. Of course, when I say bumped, I don’t mean brushing shoulders with them on Kensington High Street, more that they’re the centre of attention as you’d expect. Cameras are flashing left, right and centre as people clamour to get their picture taken with the happy couple. And they don’t complain once. Only they’re not on Kensington High Street, or Buckingham Palace for that matter, but the new main attraction at Madame Tussaud’s, the famous waxwork museum that has been open in London for over 200 years. The new Duke and Duchess of Sussex have

now joined the already 300 lifelike figures and my seven-year-old daughter was in awe as she queued to have her picture taken, then latterly with the rest of the royals on the balcony of the palace. My son –he’s five – on the other hand, was less than impressed, preferring the Marvel figures and 4D cinema experience. My wife was happy to have her picture taken with a Wookiee in the Star Wars section while I gave Bobby Moore a hand lifting the Jules Rimet trophy. With other areas covering film, music, culture and sport, as well as a Spirit of London ride in a London taxi, it was a fun way to spend 2-3 hours. And where else would you bump into Harry and Meghan? After fretting about bring our children to the capital for the first time, they quickly put us at ease, taking it all in their stride and appreciating London for what it is – a truly wonderful city. After living there briefly almost 20 years ago, I’ve dipped in and out on

a regular basis, usually for work, and it’s easy to forget what a fantastic place it really is. Suitable for kids? Most definitely. The base for our stay was the charming Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel, which was tucked away in the chic little enclave of Belgravia. It was a great spot – close to Knightsbridge tube station and the upmarket shopping of Harrods and Harvey Nichols as well as being a short walk to Hyde Park. The hotel is the smallest in the Jumeirah portfolio with just 88 rooms. What I really liked about it was that you get the quality service of a big hotel chain yet it retained a boutique feel. All the staff were really friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Our junior suite accommodated the four of us comfortably and had all the little comforts that make a big difference – bath robes and slippers for all of us, Temple Spa products in the bathrooms, Nespresso coffee machine and complimentary wifi. The icing on the cake? Complimentary teddy bears for the kids. Like I said, it’s the little things. Guests can also use the Peak Health Club & Spa at sister property Jumeirah Carlton Tower, which is just around the corner, and there are complimentary bikes to hire, should you wish to explore on two wheels. You can dine in the Lowndes Bar & Kitchen or outside on The Terrace, the latter

It was the perfect start to the day and

just what you needed for a day of exploring ahead. Next on our list of things to do, and a charming 15-20 minute walk along The Serpentine in Hyde Park, was the Natural History and Science museums. My son is a huge dinosaur fan and was blown away by the display at the former while my daughter loved learning about the human body in the latter. Given that there’s so much to see and do – a day wasn’t enough for us – it’s amazing that both of these attractions are free to visit. For our sightseeing day, we made good use of the Tube and buses – kids under 11 travel for free with a paying adult – which saw us take in the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Downing Street and Trafalgar Square. A torrential downpour and thunderstorm curtailed our plans somewhat so we ducked into the shops of Regent Street, Carnaby Street and Oxford Street before heading back to the hotel for some much needed rest and recuperation. The Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel was the perfect respite. Overall we had an amazing four days; the weather was glorious in the most part and even the trains ran on time. My children are already planning what we’ll do on our next visit.

A very special car Bentley is celebrating its 100th year in 2019, so how do you celebrate such an occasion? By making a very special edition of your most prestigious vehicle, that’s how. Called the Mulsanne W.O Edition by Mulliner, it’s a homage to founder W.O Bentley’s famous final 1930s design – the ‘8-litre’. What’s special about this is that each of the 100 cars built will hold a slice of crankshaft from W.O Bentley’s personal car. Double decade The Audi TT is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The TT first made its debut to the world with its groundbreaking design back in 1998, being released onto the road three years later. To celebrate this double decade anniversary, the TT coupe and roadster have undergone enhancements to exterior design, power upgrades and an equipment uplift. The S-Line and Black edition models are further differentiated from their predecessors. The Audi virtual cockpit now has an additional sport display providing information on engine output, torque and G-forces. The 1.8-litre TFSI engine is being replaced by a 194hp 2.0-litre engine and the 227hp 2.0-litre engine has been boosted up to 242hp. Orders in the autumn. First deliveries late 2018.
UP FOR THE CUP Performance car enthusiasts will know of the Megane R.S; its driving dynamics are the best in the hot hatch business, and the Trophy raises the bar even further. We now have a new Megane R.S Trophy and it’s going to shake up the hot hatch segment. Based on the Cup chassis, the Trophy boasts a new 1.8-litre turbo engine producing 300hp and 310lb ft of torque. As with all Megane R.S models, power is delivered through the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or six-speed dualclutch gearbox. Like the ordinary Megane R.S, the Trophy comes with a rearwheel steering system which aids the agility of the car to make it much more nimble.
