A Coronavirus update from Sheffield’s Director of Public Health
We are living in extraordinary times and we continue to take extraordinary measures in order to stay safe during the Coronavirus pandemic. The virus has brought many challenges to our city and, unfortunately, they are challenges we will have to face for some time to come. We are not out of the woods yet, and as such we need to keep playing our part to keep each other safe. We are trying to balance the impact of a dangerous virus with getting back to some form of normal. The virus is very easily transmitted and as we have seen from earlier in the summer carries a significant mortality risk.
Many are of the view that the virus disproportionately affects the elderly. This is true. But increasingly we are aware of many young people who have mild symptoms but are then affected by what is now known as long-Covid, which are long lasting symptoms and this can be very debilitating and seems to affect anyone. For this reason alone we should all do what we can to protect ourselves.
I want to thank the people of Sheffield for your support in continuing to protect each other and our communities by following the safety measures in place. Your continued effort has helped to safeguard our way of life, and has allowed each of us to continue to enjoy all Sheffield has to offer. Acting safely, respectfully and responsibly will help us to fight the spread of infection. I know and appreciate the frustration and repetitiveness that has surrounded the Covid-19 safety messages out there. However, if we are to keep everyone safe, these

messages bear repeating as they are vital in keeping you, our communities and our family and friends safe. Our efforts to slow the spread of the virus locally needs your help. We are doing all we can to prevent any further lockdowns, and the safety of our city and our residents
remains our priority, but we cannot do this in isolation. Prevention is a citywide effort. Sheffield City Council is keen to get the city and the lives of those who live in it, back to normal as soon as possible. We, like you, want to see our live music venues open, a return to our thriving entertainment culture and ensure every pub, gym and club is able to be fully open and be enjoyed by the public. But we can’t just yet. We are not going to be in that position for some time and that is why, together we all have a part to play to stop
At some point we might all be asked to self-isolate because we develop symptoms, or because we are a contact of a case. the spread. As this goes to print, The Government has put new curfews in place to restrict the opening of pubs and restaurants and other hospitality venues. I can guide you as best I can, but the best action is what you take; to wash your hands, wear a face covering and keep your distance. Going back to basics is the best way to combat the virus and limit the spread of the disease. If you have Covid-19 symptoms, resist going to the shops or visiting the pub with your friends. At some point we might all be asked to selfisolate because we develop symptoms, or because we are a contact of a case. This is THE most important thing you can do to reduce spread. It does mean isolate. It is worth thinking through a plan in advance around supplies of food, essentials, medicines. Stay at home and book a test as soon as you can. The more contact we have, the more likely the virus will spread. Limiting social contact is not ideal as we want to see our friends and

family, but it is important. Keep your distance, wear a face covering, wash your hands. And if you want to protect others? Isolate and get tested if you get symptoms. It’s vital that we take responsibility for our own safety first if we are to protect others. We must adhere to the guidance, to remind our friends, families and colleagues of why staying safe is so important. If we want to avoid any further lockdowns or further restrictions, if we want to see the return of our city to the cultural centre it has always been, then stick to the safety measures and we will get there in time. It has taken a huge amount of work and effort for Sheffield to remain open. Please, enjoy Sheffield responsibly, and continue to follow the guidelines. Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management "A complete transformation" "We needed a new kitchen, but also wanted to create an open-plan, spacious living space, which we could use all year round for cooking, dining and relaxing. We ran our suggestions with Dan from Dave Stone Design, who came up with a creative design scheme to turn our dreams into reality. It would involve knocking down walls, installing a stud wall, bricking up a door and fitting double patio doors leading onto the garden. Dan project-managed the building and installation work and was always at hand to discuss tweaks and modifications. He synchronised the work extremely well, with the various members of their team arriving in sequence to undertake their part of the work. The standard of workmanship was excellent. Our home was incredibly well respected with a thorough clean-up operation at the end of every day. The end result is quite simply sublime. We now have a light and airy kitchen with an Airuno Otello ceiling extractor. There's an induction hob, a composite undermounted sink, a combi microwave oven, a warming drawer, Samsung ovens, feature lighting, an ivory garnet granite worktop, pop-up sockets, a stow washer/dryer unit, LVT flooring and an island kitchen with considerable storage. Grey designer radiators have been fitted for additional heating when needed. The entire project was quite remarkably carried out from inception to completion in a matter of just three weeks. We now have an open-plan kitchen, dining room, sitting room and conservatory, which are of an ambient temperature the whole year through. Simply perfect." Diverse and inviting DID YOU KNOW THAT BROOMHILL USED TO HAVE A RACECOURSE? REBECCA WALES DELVES INTO THE HISTORY OF SOME OF SHEFFIELD’S MOST POPULAR SUBURBS. ver the last two centuries, Broomhill has developed a reputation for being one of Sheffield’s most diverse and inviting suburbs. Steeped in a rich and engaging history, the area features a variety of prominent buildings such as the Church of St Mark, The Mount and the King Edward VII School. The latter two were designed and built by Sheffield architect William Flockton and are both Grade II listed. The historic Botanical Gardens also lie on the borders of Broomhill and are one of Sheffield’s most popular attractions. Renowned for its unique and varied selection of retailers, dining and drinking venues, healthcare specialists, and hair and beauty salons, the area has something for everyone. In the early 18th century, Broomhill was originally known as Crooks Moor, with most of the area being used as the Crooks Moor Racecourse. The racecourse was established in 1711 by the Town Trustees in an attempt to divert the public’s attention from more bloodthirsty pastimes such as bearbaiting, cock-fighting and dog fights. The races took place on three consecutive

days a year in late May and were discontinued when the commons of Ecclesall Bierlow were enclosed between 1778 and 1789. Today, the site of the old grandstand is marked by the aptly named residence Stand House Lodge on Fulwood Road. As the racecourse was gradually dismantled towards the end of the 18th King Edward’s School
century, only a sparse scattering of buildings existed in what was soon to become one of Sheffield’s first major suburbs. There were a few houses within this area, some of them encroachments on the common land, and a huddle of cottages to the east of the present Botanical Gardens, including an inn

known as The Ball in the Tree (which was demolished in 1870). One of the first notable houses built during this time belonged to William Newbould. Situated on land to the east of Newbould Lane, Newbould named the house Broomhill for the simple reason that it was the first house above Broomhall, and was on a hill. Not so long afterwards, the suburb became known as Broomhill. At the turn of the 19th century, Broomhill began to develop into an important location in Sheffield. During this period, further buildings were completed, including several large houses with considerable grounds and gardens. These larger properties were populated by the town’s wealthier residents such as factory owners, steel magnates, cutlery manufacturers and doctors. However the growth of the area rapidly increased when the turnpike road to Glossop was opened in 1821. This road became a very busy route for trade into and out of town. Although the suburb has undergone many changes over the years, many of Broomhill’s 19th century buildings, as well as its appeal, remain to this day. Today, Broomhill is noted for its large student population, with most of the Halls of Residence of the University of Sheffield being located in the area. It is also home to many other students in privately owned accommodation. Crosspool, which stands in an elevated position above the Porter and Rivelin valleys, does not have any ancient history as a village stretching back over the centuries. Throughout medieval times the area was part of a deer hunting park known as Hallamshire Chase. This was an area of thousands of acres set aside for the Lords of Hallamshire after theNorman conquest of England. Lydgate Hall was one of the earliest substantial buildings in the area as it existed in the early 1700s although it was substantially altered and extended in the early 19th century. It was the home of the steel magnate Horatio Bright (1827–1905) for the last 30 years of his life. The Hall was eventually demolished in the 1930s being replaced by housing on Lydgate Hall Crescent. Although there was never a Crosspool village, the area was strategically placed as two roads left Sheffield through the area and there was a toll gate as well as
inns and a blacksmiths to serve the traveller. The main industry in the 18th and 19th century was farming although there was also extensive quarrying. The presence of several natural pools gave the area its name in the 1800s as travellers on the turnpike roads were said to have “crossed the pools” when they had passed through the neighbourhood and the name of Crosspool developed. The A57 road was built in 1820, and tolls were phased out in 1884, but housing development in the area was delayed because of Crosspool’s elevated position, which developers thought would deter people from settling in the area. Housing development eventually started in the 1880s but full-scale building did not take place until after the First World War. In 1913 Crosspool became the first area of Sheffield to receive a public transport service by bus as the Sheffield Tramway did not extend to the suburb. Crosspool suffered some bomb damage during the Second World War when bombs were dropped on Den Bank, Shore Lane, Sandygate Road and Ringstead Crescent. Present day Crosspool is centred on the area around the junction of Manchester Road, Sandygate Road and Lydgate Lane. It is home to four schools – Tapton, King Edwards VII Lower School, and Lydgate Infant and Junior Schools. Tapton Hall, a Grade II listed building is situated on Shore Lane, it was built in 1855 and has been the home of the industrialist Edward Vickers and the snuff mill owner George Wilson. A prominent landmark, on Lydgate Lane, is the Crosspool transmitter, officially known as the Tapton Hill transmitting station, which stands on the site of a covered reservoir and is well seen from many parts of Sheffield. The 57-metre-high mast takes advantage of Crosspool’s elevated position to provide TV pictures and radio signals for Sheffield by the “line of sight” method. Ranmoor is another more recent suburb and was mostly developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it features a number of large houses that were built for the city’s steel magnates, as well as, most notably, a large church, St John’s.This church was opened 24 April 1879 but was almost entirely destroyed by fire on 2 January 1887. All that survived from the original church was the tower and spire, which still stands today.

Other notable buildings in the Ranmoor area were built for some of the well known industrialists of Sheffield. The Grade II listed Oakbrook was built by Flockton, Lee & Flockton c.1855 for Mark Firth, a steel magnate and philanthropist who founded Firth College, one of the institutions that eventually merged to establish the University of Sheffield. Oakbrook is now part of the Notre Dame Roman Catholic School. Ranmoor Hall was built in 1881 for William Wheatcroft Harrison, a cutlery manufacturer. The Croft was built in 1909 for James Neill, the tool manufacturer. The Grade II* Endcliffe Hall was completed in 1865; it was built for Sir John Brown by Flockton & Abbott. Thornbury was built in 1865 for Frederick Mappin, it is now a private hospital. The Grade II listed Riverdale House on Graham Road was built around 1860 and was lived in by the industrialist Charles Henry Firth and the businessman John George Graves. www.sheffieldvibe.com 61

Safe, Happy and Learning THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE NURSERY CONTINUES TO MOVE WITH THE TIMES, NURTURING NOT JUST CHILDREN, BUT THEIR STAFF TOO. he Old School House Nursery may have been serving the community for nearly 30 years, but they are always keeping up with the latest developments in child care and development. The Crosspool Nursery School opened in 1990 and was later followed by the opening of their Endcliffe site in 2009. The friendly, family-run nursery has forged a reputation as a leader in childcare provision, providing wraparound care and a plethora of activities for children aged three months to five years old to match the needs of busy parents seeking a stimulating and loving environment for their children. “Our staff have a wealth of experience in child care,” says principal Stephanie Connelly. “We’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. We first opened our doors as a nursery school for ages 2-5, then in 2000 we added a specialist Baby Unit.

"We provide an excellent foundation for children to go to school and beyond. Many of our pre-school children even come back to work for us." Nursery opening hours are from 7.30am to 6.30pm, in addition to providing breakfast, after school, holiday and French clubs for children up to 11 years of age. The nursery also benefits from Early Years teachers with specialists in music, French and short tennis. All of their meals are home-cooked, with ingredients sourced from local suppliers and any dietary requirements requested by parents can be catered for in order to meet their children’s needs. The nurseries have spacious rooms and extensive playgrounds, as well as a mud kitchen for children to explore. Forest schools were also introduced in 2015 and have been a resounding success. “It’s important, especially with parents working, that children have the chance to be in touch with the environment,” continues Stephanie. “Our staff are trained to deliver classes in numeracy and literacy outside. It’s also a great environment for children’s imaginations to grow.” The Old School House not only helps to nurture its children, but its members of staff too. They are a registered CACHE training centre, offering training
up to levels 2, 3 and 4 in childcare, with the majority of their staff also having first aid training. They also provide NQT training for newly qualified teachers to complete their qualification. Furthermore, they promote fundamental British values (according to Ofsted) such as democracy, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith. With all this, and their proud dedication to their mission statement: “Safe, Happy and Learning”, it’s no wonder that both Old School House Nursery schools are ‘Outstanding’ in their last Ofsted reports as well as being awarded the Gold Standard by Investors of People. The envy of many INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES THRIVE IN SHARROW VALE BUT HAS THIS ALWAYS BEEN THE CASE? REBECCA WALES FINDS SNUFF MILLS, TURNPIKES AND CEMETERIES IN ITS RECENT HISTORY. ocated in the south-western portion of the city, Sharrow Vale is one of Sheffield’s most vibrant suburbs. Straddling the Porter Brook and Ecclesall Road, the area has a full range of shops, restaurants, pubs and services that are the envy of many outlying districts. Sharrow Vale Road is one of the suburb’s most popular areas and is home to a great selection of small independent shops and businesses. With a variety of delicatessens, bakeries, patisseries and wine shops, as well as a wide range of cafes and restaurants, it has rapidly developed a reputation as a foodie destination. This was particularly amplified with the opening of Dyson Place – a new courtyard scheme which features an eclectic mix of cafés and restaurants. Alongside this, Sharrow Vale Road is also renowned for holding the Sharrow Vale Market three times a year. Running from Hunter’s Bar roundabout all the way along to Hawley’s forecourt, the market comprises around 100 stalls selling a wide variety of locally reared and made produce, hot food from all corners of the globe, crafts, clothing and plants. Sharrow Vale is also known for its historical ties and is home to 18th century houses such as Sharrow Green Cottage. Situated at the top of Sharrow Vale Road at its junction with Psalter Lane, the cottage was built in 1795 by Rev. Alexander Mackenzie. It was then passed by descent to Captain Toll who sold it to John Smith in 1851. In 1862, John Smith, in turn, sold the property to Henry Wilson, who was the owner of the snuff mills nearby. These mills are still standing today on the Porter Brook, just off Ecclesall Road. The Sharrow Mills complex comprises

a variety of Grade II listed structures including the original 1763 snuff mill, the 1880 snuff mill (which was built to complement the existing one) and the dam walls of the mill pond. The complex also features various other 19th century buildings, including the counting house, the warehouse and the stable block. Today, the mill is still capable of producing snuff by water power, although electricity is often used to drive the machinery. This makes it quite possibly the oldest working water wheel in the country. The Sharrow Mills are situated at the end of Snuff Mill Lane, which is just off Ecclesall Road – another popular area within Sharrow Vale. Similarly to Sharrow Vale Road, Ecclesall Road is renowned for its vast range of restaurants, coffee houses, pubs, bars and shops. The area is also admired for its vibrant nightlife and ease of access to some of Sheffield’s best green spaces, such as the Botanical Gardens and Endcliffe Park. Ecclesall Road also has a large student population, mostly from Sheffield Hallam University, who have a campus on the nearby Collegiate Crescent. Ecclesall Road was constructed in the early part of the 19th century and was operated as a turnpike road by the Sheffield and Chapel en le Frith Trust – the first toll being paid at Hunter’s Bar.
The use of the toll bar came to an end at midnight on 31 October 1884. Once John Speer, the toll collector, had locked the doors of his toll house and walked away, the assembled crowd allegedly lifted the gate off its hinges and threw it over a wall into a nearby field. When the toll house was demolished to widen the road, the stone gate posts were used for the entrance to Endcliffe Park nearby. However, when the traffic island was made, the posts were replaced in the exact position they had occupied for so long. The preserved gate posts are now situated in the centre of Hunter’s Bar roundabout. Although the name ‘Hunter’s Bar’ is specifically attributed to the roundabout, it also refers to the surroundings areas at the intersection of Ecclesall Road, Brocco Bank, Sharrow Vale Road and Junction Road. The name was originally derived from the Hunter family, who lived in a Georgian house near the bar. When built as a farm house around the year 1700, the building would have occupied a fine position overlooking the countryside which is now Endcliffe Park. The house still stands today and is currently the Kadampa Meditation Centre.

Occupying a north-facing hillside site between Sharrow Vale and Sharrow Head, the General Cemetery was one of the first commercial cemeteries in Britain. Its opening in 1836 was a response to the rapid growth of Sheffield and the relatively poor state of the town’s churchyards. Over time, the cemetery became established as the principal burial ground in Victorian Sheffield, containing the graves of 87,000 people. Today, the cemetery is renowned for containing the largest collection of Grade II listed buildings and monuments in Sheffield. This includes the classically-styled Gatehouse and Nonconformist Chapel, the richly ornamented Egyptian Gate, the neo-gothic Anglican Chapel, the Registrar’s House, the Catacombs, and the Dissenter’s Wall. The cemetery is now a local nature reserve and is managed by the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust.

Mind your manners IF YOU HEAD TO BROCCO KITCHEN FOR SUPPER, DON’T MAKE IT YOUR LAST, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. ike many of you I’m sure, I decided to use the time in lockdown to expand my horizons and thus delved into the world of podcasts. A particular favourite was Table Manners, which is hosted by singer Jessie Ware and her mum, Lenny. The premise is inviting a celebrity to their dinner table to eat and chat about food and family (and whatever book/film/ album they’re looking to promote). Over a few months I listened to conversations with the likes of Gregory Porter, Annie Mac, John Legend and food critic Jay Rayner amongst others. The one hour-or-so episodes usually conclude with Jessie asking the guest what their ‘last supper’ would be; they are asked to choose a starter, main course, dessert and drink. It’s all good fun and got me thinking what I would choose. Some form of seafood would have to be in there for me and one thing I love, and which you don’t see too often on menus in the city, is octopus. So it was with great delight that, as we took our table at Brocco Kitchen, it had been added to their new autumn smorgasbord menu. And this particular octopus dish, expertly put together by head chef Leslie Buddington, was something truly special. The sole tentacle, grilled with miso, roasted peanuts and lime, was, in a word, divine. Incredibly tender, the Asian flavours added salty and citrussy notes while the nuts added texture and crunch. I could have eaten it again and again, it was that good. For those familiar (or not so) with Brocco, dishes are served as small plates rather than conventional starters, mains and desserts. It’s an increasingly popular way of dining and a great way to dip into some of your favourite flavours. The are three main components to the menu - hunter, fisher and gardener - as well as nibbles, sides, desserts and a cheeseboard. There was a separate specials board too which also included seasonal cocktails; I sampled a Helsinki Mule (Finlandia vodka, ginger ale, lime) whilst my wife started with The Hugo (gin, elderflower,

sparkling wine, mint) from the regular menu. The octopus (£18) was one of six dishes we tried on the night. We started
with some warm sourdough bread served with whipped salted butter (£4) which was closely followed by celeriac, salt baked with plum jam and crispy kale

(£8). The latter was a real surprise, the nutty flavour of the root vegetable well complemented by the sweetness of the plum and ‘seaweed-style’ cabbage. Spiced sweet potato with sour cream (£4.50) arrived next and was quickly followed by cod, which had been roasted with charred leek and served with a mussel sauce and herb crumb (£14). The fish was perfectly cooked and subtly flavoured with the crumb adding interesting texture. Our final dish, and a cut of meat that done well would definitely make my last supper, was pork belly (£12). On this occasion it had been slow roasted and served with a roasted pear purée and the most amazing puffed-up liquorice crackling. It didn’t disappoint and was so tender you could cut it with a fork. Glasses of house red (merlot) and white (cabernet sauvignon), both £6.20 for a large glass, were the perfect accompaniments. Desserts came in the form of apple tarte tatin with creme anglaise (£8) and sticky toffee pudding (£8) - a hugely popular choice on the Table Manners podcast, particularly with American guests - and were a fitting end to a fantastic meal. Like all restaurants, Brocco has had to adapt to current guidelines but provided a seamless experience. Socially-distanced tables, staggered reservation times and check-in stations did little to alter the mood which was warm and relaxed throughout. Service was exemplary. As we nursed cups of coffee and reflected on our evening at Brocco, I think I’d pretty much nailed down my last supper - octopus, pork belly, sticky toffee pudding and good glass of red would do me nicely. Even better you can find it all under one roof at this charming restaurant close to Endcliffe Park. But if you head there for supper, don’t make it your last, with food this good you’ll want to return again (and again). As you enter through the bay tree-lined doorway you are greeted by a modern reception and waiting area. Once checked in, you’ll find the nail, lash and brow area to the left and to the right a huge light-filled space housing three wash stations, 18 cutting stations, a separate beauty room and even a garden - the perfect place to relax in the warmer months. Due to the size of the salon and spacing of the stations, social distancing is not an issue and all staff wear the appropriate PPE. Sustainability is at the heart of much of what Kathryn does, from the wellchosen products to the disposable towels she has been using for the last nine years. Hairunion uses SafeShades by KIS hair colours which utilise a balanced, clean and green formula, created by harmonising nature and science, which ensures a perfect colour result without
compromises by fully respecting the skin and hair. Specially developed free from PPD, Resorcinol and Monoethanolamina, using a minimum quantity of ammonia, in order to create a more gentle and safe formula for both hair stylist and customers. A complete band of gems makes the perfect sign of love, reflecting the ancient belief in the circle as a symbol of eternity. Eternity rings themselves have been known since at least the 18th century, when they would often feature paste (glass) stones or a mixture of different gems. In the early decades of the 20th century diamonds were becoming more available and consequently more commonly used. Synthetic spinel was also a popular choice, making use of the latest advances in the synthesis of gemstones to provide a more affordable option that imitated the appearance of diamond.
In the 1960s DeBeers began to promote the idea of a diamond eternity ring. The original slogan for this campaign was “She married you for richer or poorer. Let her know how it’s going”. This, and subsequent campaigns with similarly light-hearted slogans, ensured the giving of an eternity ring soon became a tradition almost as universal as engagement and wedding rings. While eternity rings were traditionally a full band of gems it is now more common for a half-set band to be chosen. The principal reason for this is that it is a more practical style for regular wear since it is plain around the lower half of the band, making the ring easier to adjust in size and more comfortable to wear. The wide range of settings and styles available now also encourages great variation in what is chosen as an eternity ring. For many people, it is important to find a design that complements their existing engagement and wedding rings, as the eternity ring is traditionally worn alongside them on the same finger. Diamond-set bands traditionally regarded as eternity rings are increasingly popular as wedding rings too. An eternity ring is still often added later, perhaps duplicating the wedding ring to form a complete set on the finger, or
worn separately on the right hand, allowing for an expanded choice of style and size. hristmas is not cancelled – yet. The ongoing pandemic has created a constantly shifting landscape and let’s be honest, we don’t really know whether we’re coming or going. With the ‘Rule of Six’, 10pm curfews, social distancing and restrictions on the number of households meeting (at the time of writing), this year’s festive celebrations are going to be very different. Chances are they’ll be no big office party; these are likely to be much smaller affairs or may not even happen at all. Getting together with friends and family is going to be limiting too with the new rules and we still don’t know if we’ll all be able to sit round the dinner table for turkey and all the trimmings. But don’t let it get you down. This year’s celebrations might have to be built on shifting sands but that doesn’t mean they have to be cancelled altogether, you might just have to get a bit more creative. Multiple, smaller gatherings at home spread over the festive season might be the way forward, for example. If this is the case, and you’re planning on inviting friends and family round for dinner or drinks, you’ll need a well-stocked drinks cabinet – wines, beers and plenty of choice when it comes to spirits. Gordons, Bacardi, Bells and a bottle of Smirnoff Red just won’t cut it if you want to impress. Premium and small-batch spirits have become increasingly popular over recent years with sales predictably increasing in the run up to Christmas. With that in mind, we take a look at four of the staples that every drinks cabinet should contain – whisky, gin, vodka and rum – what you should be looking to buy and what to do with them, including some great cocktail ideas. Alison and Adrian Murray are custodians of The Wee Dram in Bakewell, Derbyshire and have been providing expert advice on all aspects of whisky for over 22 years. “Our concept is very simple, to provide customers with a great range of whiskies from all around the world, such as Kentucky Bourbon, Canadian Rye, Irish, English, Welsh, Swedish, Blended Scotch and of course Single Malt Scotch Whisky to name but a few,” Adrian said. “American whiskey, particularly craft distilling, has had a resurgence over the past decade and we now have, alongside more traditional Kentucky bourbon, whisky from Seattle, rye whiskey from Brooklyn and Texan whiskey. “However, our biggest selling category of whisky is by far Single Malt Scotch. We tend to sell more from the lesser known distilleries, as many customers are looking for something a little bit different. Our best-selling whiskies tend to be big, full flavoured expressions, such as very peaty smoky whiskies, from the Isle of Islay in the Hebrides, as well as rich, sherry cask matured styles from the Highlands.” Is there a particular bottle Alison and Adrian can recommend for this festive season? “Tomatin 14 years old Port Wood Finish,” said Adrian. “This is a great age for whisky in general, however this particular bottling has benefitted from spending a couple of years in ex-tawny port casks. “Tomatin Distillery, situated just south of Inverness, high in the mountains, makes a lighter spirit than you would expect

given its location, however this whisky is excellent for extracting flavours from the wood. The complex flavour incorporating the rich port tones has a real ‘Christmassy feel’.” Leeds-based Tailors Gin have an interesting story - they’re mens clothing makers by trade but have branched out into small-batch gin production and have a unique store in the Grand Arcade. By day it’s a men’s tailors, by night it’s a 1920s speakeasy where the star of the show is their very own gin. Owner Jamila Juma-Ware has also seen a big shift towards quality in recent months. “There has definitely been a change in people’s buying habits,” she said. “People are really keen to shop local, and support independent businesses, particularly at the moment. “I think people are really seeing the true value in buying artisan, small batch gins. The craft, and attention to detail in each small batch creation, really pays off in terms of the recipe production and the overall taste, and there is a bigger call for understanding how the gin is made, where, why and who by - the story behind each gin, adds to the overall experience. “There is also a lot of attention into savouring the moments - probably because drinking is typically such a social event, it’s becoming a real ‘special occasion’, so more thought and effort goes into the whole event - from a late afternoon G&T at home, right through to drinks with your social bubble in a bar, people are looking for the wow factor.” Phyll Clark runs The Tasting Note in Bawtry and stocks a

full range of spirits and has seen a change in buying trends since the start of the pandemic. “People are staying at home more and we have found people buying quality rather than quantity,” she said. Gin remains hugely popular and Phyll has seen a thirst for Yorkshire gins with one in particular proving really popular. “Everyone likes a good G&T and our customers love to purchase local gins. One of our latest additions is one from J.P. Adlam which is handcrafted in Yorkshire,” added Phyll. “It pairs really well with a Mediterranean Tonic with lashings of ice and lime and orange slices, Elderflower Tonic with ice and raspberries, or Indian Tonic over ice with a lemon/lime garnish.” J.P. Adlam gin is produced by Doncaster-based Lujo Distilling Company, which was formed a little over three years ago with the sole purpose to produce premium quality small batch spirits. “We have seen success all over the world for the quality of our gin,“ said Jason Adlam. “We even featured in a BBC documentary. The distillery produces a premium London Dry Gin as well as two fruit flavours with a newly launched rum and vodka following suit to complete the family. “Each run is batched in numbers around 100 bottles and hand-bottled, labelled and wax sealed for that truly unique experience.” Despite recent events, Lujo has seen a significant increase in sales as people start to appreciate local produce. Whilst available from local quality independent retailers throughout Yorkshire, you can also buy directly from the distillery. “For us, the small batch craft culture and meaning automatically provides a brand with a point of difference and

Another small-batch spirit with a story is Sheffield Vodka, which is produced by True North Brew Co. The Sheffieldbased company are perhaps best known for their chain of pubs and bars throughout South Yorkshire but they also have their own city centre brewery and distillery producing fine ales, dry gin and now, vodka. Company spirit and cocktail expert Thomas Hay-Owens told us about what makes their vodka unique: “Vodka is categorised as an odourless, flavourless spirit. We’ve embraced the traditional process behind vodka, utilising a copper pot still for the distillation due to the fact it can help takeaway the bitter, ‘after burn’ quality of a lot of vodkas. “However, it’s our approach of stepping away from the norm that sets our vodka apart. We distill our British grain spirit base with cracked black pepper, to emulate the subtly spiced, punchy finish of a rye blended vodka. We then also add fresh lemon zest and a touch of honey from The Sheffield Honey company to round out the earthy tones produced by the pepper and to add further smoothness and complexity to the finished article. “The spirit market sometimes runs the risk of being oversaturated, so locality and provenance really do make a difference when people are selecting which bottle to buy online or in shops. Finding that niche that sets the product apart, be it the production method, the ingredients or simply the story behind the spirit is becoming more and more important to the customer. This is absolutely the case when it comes to Sheffield Vodka.” Rum has been one of the stand-out spirits of the year. Last year, almost 35 million bottles were sold, worth a little more than £1billion, according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association. In fact, one leading newspaper has recently said that rum now ranks alongside gin and whisky among the nation’s favourite spirits. There’s no-one better placed to tell you why the liquor, made by fermenting then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice, has become so popular than Adrian Bagnoli, proprietor of Sheffield city centre bar, Cubana. Adrian is a real aficionado when it comes to rum and has searched the world to compile a rum menu offering over 250 varieties. Competing against hundreds of bars and restaurants across the UK, Cubana won the Best Rum Menu 2016 category at the tenth Golden Rum Barrel Awards in London. “Of course we’ve plenty of rums from all around Cuba and Latin America but our vast range extends from as close as Sheffield to as far as India and literally all over the world, all hand-picked for their individual characteristics and historical value,” said Adrian. “If you fancy something incredibly special you could choose from our Rare and Limited section – most of these

Play your cards right DID RICHARD ABBEY HAVE A WILD TIME AT ECCLESALL ROAD’S NEW SPORTS BAR AND GRILL? e’d been planning our big family holiday for almost two years. Flights and accommodation were all arranged, park passes were in the bag, we’d booked our ride slots at Disneyworld and I’d even looked into buying tickets for an Orlando Magic NBA game. It was going to be an Easter holiday to remember. And then a certain pandemic stopped us in our tracks.You can picture the disappointment – and the kids were pretty upset too. If the last few months have taught us anything, it’s perspective. While we were upset our holiday was cancelled it pales in comparison to everything else that has been going on. After months of uncertainty, things finally seemed to be getting back onto an even keel and now more restrictions have come into action. Imagine trying to launch a new business in this climate? Well, The Wildcard Bar & Grill has done just that, and boy, it’s been worth the wait. The transformation of the former Napoleons Casino building, which has been two years in the making, is quite remarkable. If you drive up and down Ecclesall Road on a regular basis you will have no doubt noticed the

stunning blue and gold facade. Walk through the new entrance, and the interior is just as striking. Once you’ve checked in with reception, sanitised and been shown to your table, you’re confronted with a spectacular island bar area serving beers from all over the world, both bottled and draught, as well as wines, soft drinks and cocktails. Most striking is the huge Jumbotron which sits atop the bar, an enormous cube-like structure usually seen displaying scores at ice hockey matches.This one, however, shows live sports on four large screens and is further complemented by lots of smaller screens throughout the bar and restaurant. On the ground floor there are tall tables and stools to catch all the action (no standing at this time) and the front of the building, home to bench-style restaurant tables, has been extended and will open onto a terrace via bi-fold doors in warmer months. If you prefer something more private, there are booths where small groups can watch the action on their own exclusive small screen. An L-shaped mezzanine floor houses further restaurant tables as well as a pool table, electronic dartboards and a custom-built shuffle board. The blue and gold theme continues throughout the high quality interior and is accented by sports memorabilia, some donated by local teams and sportsman
including England cricket captain Joe Root and boxer Kell Brook. But don’t think this is just a place for sports fans, it’s a venue for everybody, as general manager Jack Hartley explains: “We want it to be a place where families, groups and couples can feel comfortable, the kind of place that welcomes you to bring your kids, enjoy a burger and cocktail whilst taking in the match. We want it to be a destination venue, one where customers can enjoy everything under one roof – the complete night (or day) out.” Seated on the mezzanine, we had a perfect few over the bar and a choice of sports to watch on the many screens around us, including football, boxing, and rugby. Former Yankees head chef Mikey Freeman leads the kitchen at The Wildcard and the menu offers a good selection of American classics as well as Asian and Mediterranean flavours.You can choose from pizzas and burgers to

salads and grill dishes as well as appetisers which can be eaten as a starter or great for sharing in a group whilst watching the match. Drinks seemed like a good place to start – a Beefeater Collins (£8) for my wife and pint of Goose Island Midway IPA (£5) for myself – and I loved the Panini sticker-style cocktail menus.There are plenty to choose from, as you can imagine, and the range of beers, which includes local tipples from Bradfield and Thornbridge as well as the likes of Budweiser, Corona and Peroni, is
impressive. Four-pint pitchers and bottle buckets are available too and Happy Hour, with 2-4-1 cocktails and discounted beers, runs 5-7pm Monday to Friday. Food-wise we tucked into classic hot buffalo chicken wings (£6 for ten) to start as well as duck pot stickers (£6.75), Japanese dumplings served with cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce. Both were good but we particularly loved the wings which had a tartness to them as well as plenty of heat - we definitely needed the carafe of water! With Mikey at the skillet a burger
seemed like an obvious choice and the BBQ Ranch version (£12), topped with pulled pork, cheese and fried onions, was excellent; big, juicy and delicious. Following a recommendation from our waitress, I chose a Florida Cobb salad (£13) - well, it’s the closest thing I’m going to get to the sunshine state this year. It wasn’t for the faint-hearted - the huge bowl of grilled chicken, bacon, avocado, sweetcorn, boiled egg, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, spring onions and blue cheese with ranch dressing was plentiful and packed with flavour. Desserts came in the form of a banoffee waffle (£6.50) and Campfire S’mores (£6.50) and were every bit as indulgent as you can imagine - definitely naughty but nice and a great way to end our meal. After months of anticipation,The Wildcard Bar & Grill is here and we loved it. It’s exactly the type of place I would have expected to find in Orlando – even better, it’s right here on our doorstep. SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL IS GETTING READY FOR CHRISTMAS WITH A NUMBER OF FREE EVENTS. heffield Cathedral is a massive draw for those living in and visiting Sheffield; It has been a place of worship for almost 1,000 years and 250,000 people regularly pass through its doors each year. Sadly, due to the current pandemic, these numbers have been greatly reduced but there are plenty of reasons to still visit the ancient Church of St Peter and St Paul; whether you pop in for prayer and contemplation, enjoy a coffee and a slice of cake or browse the gift shop, the Cathedral is very much open for business. It has recently signed up to the 'We're Good to Go' scheme, which is organised by Visit Britain and is the Covid-19 industry standard, providing a 'ring of confidence' for destinations as well as reassurance to local residents and visitors that clear processes are in place to maintain safety and compliance. Autumn is events season at Sheffield Cathedral and following the recent Leaves of the Trees exhibition – one of many free events they are hosting in the run-up to Christmas – comes The Foundry, 23 October - 21 November. This exhibition, which has been curated by sculptor Peter Walker, celebrates the historical industry and social aspects of Sheffield's steel heritage presented through contemporary artworks. Digital technology, art and sculpture (in steel, naturally) will all feature, including a Pathé newsreel, and can be viewed during the Cathedral's opening hours. "The part the steel industry played in pulling the city together, not least during difficult times, is something worth honouring and we wanted to be able to do that," said Sheffield Cathedral's development manager, Ben Rossi. Luxmuralis Artistic Collaboration will be returning to Sheffield Cathedral with another spectacular light show. 'In the Beginning', which runs from 1-6 December, 5.30-8.30pm, will see the exterior of the building transformed

with an array of lights and digital images telling the story of Christmas. "The Christmas lights will be a gift to the people of Sheffield, to say: 'come along and enjoy the show after a long and challenging year," added Ben. Also starting on 1 December, is a Christmas Tree Festival, which will see up to 30 Christmas trees, beautifully decorated by local charities, schools and businesses, placed around the Cathedral.You will be able to vote for your favourite tree and help to support local good causes. "We want to help bring joy into people's lives. If successful, we would like to make it an annual event. Please join with us and finish the year with the joy and hope of Christmas," concluded Ben. THE 1554 COFFEE SHOP INSIDE SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL IS READY AND WAITING, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. he 1554 Coffee & Gift Shop supports the working life of Sheffield Cathedral and has proved a big draw for visitors over the years. Located at the back of the cathedral building, it offers a calm environment away from the hubbub of a busy city for both shoppers and office workers. While the gift shop re-opened in August the coffee shop had to wait a little longer and, after initially opening just two days a week, is now open 10am3pm Monday to Friday and on Saturdays when events are taking place. Sociallydistanced tables are now in place and there’s a reduced menu but, don’t worry, there’s still a tasty selection of lunchtime snacks and their popular Heavenly Coffee range is still available. “The coffee shop had become a busy hub in the heart of the city; a coffee shop built by the Cathedral and for the Cathedral,” said Ruth Maher, Enterprise Business Manager. “We have had to learn and adapt to, so please bear with us as we try to find our new normal.” As well as supporting the working life of Sheffield Cathedral, the coffee shop

(and gift shop) are proud to support many local businesses and suppliers, including the aforementioned Heavenly Coffee.You can also add Waterall’s butchers. Bakewell Bakery, Our Cow Molly Ice Cream and Henderson’s Relish to that list. All feature on the menu in some shape or form. We arrived for lunch and after sanitising and checking in at the entrance to the cathedral, took a table in the charming cafe which is bookended by two stunning stained glass windows. tables were already occupied as we settled in for a light lunch. Ruth was on hand to lead us through the reduced menu, which features savoury and sweet treats and a good selection of coffee, teas and soft drinks. Snacks included toasted teacakes (£2) , beans on toast (£3.50), soup of the day (tomato and basil on this occasion) with fresh bread (£4.50), pork pies (£3.50), sausage rolls (£3.50) and for something more substantial, meat and potato pie with gravy (£5). There was also a special for the day, cheese scone (£2.55) served

with or without pickle or chutney. After ordering drinks - cappuccino for me (£2.95) and a pot of Yorkshire tea for my wife (£1.90) - we made our dining choices. My wife opted for a good-sized sausage roll with chutney, which was deliciously crisp on the outside, while I chose the cheese scone with pickle.The warm scone was excellent, complemented by fresh butter and the zingy pickle which added extra flavour. The coffee shop at Sheffield Cathedral has long been renowned for its homemade desserts and although the menu has been reduced, it still included flapjack (£2.90), chocolate brownie (£2.90), bakewell slice (£2.90), Mrs Wilson’s fruit cake (£2.90) and Our Cow Molly ice cream (£2.25), which was available in strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, mint choc chip, lemon and ginger flavours. My bakewell slice had the perfect harmony of almond and strawberry flavours as well as crisp pastry and a soft sponge - delicious. My wife’s flapjack, made with raisins and cherries, was a sticky delight and an indulgent way to finish our lunch. With hours set to be increased and events coming up over the next few months, there’s plenty of opportunity to discover the 1554 Coffee & Gift Shop, whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to enjoy their homemade food and fantastic coffee. They even do
takeaway too if you’re pushed for time. As we finished and made our way back into the cathedral, a quartet of diners were just tucking into the meat and potato pies - hopefully with a splash of Henderson’s Relish - which looked fantastic. A return visit could be on the cards... The events coming up at Sheffield Cathedral include ‘The Foundry’, which runs from 23 October-21 November, and ‘In The Beginning’, running 1-6 December.These are free events and you can read more about them elsewhere in this issue of Westside.

Warm welcome AFTER A LONG WALK, OLIVIA WARSOP STEPS OUT OF THE COLD AND INTO THIS POPULAR DERBYSHIRE CAFE SPOT. ’m sure it’s an unpopular opinion but am I the only one who thought that Summer went on a bit? Now that Autumn has well and truly arrived I’m ready for mulled cider, country walks and for it to be acceptable to wear three layers of pyjamas and get in bed at eight o’clock. It’s probably still too early for two out of the three but country walks in the crisp Autumn chill are here at last! These early Autumn months are the perfect time to venture outdoors for a seasonal day of fun before the real cold sets in and we all scurry back indoors to huddle by the fire. If a day in the Peak District sounds ideal to you then the Insomnia Café in Calver is the perfect place to grab a hot drink and warm snack while enjoying the surrounding scenery. I was already familiar with the café having driven past it multiple times last year trying to get to Chatsworth House (I blame the satnav). The café is situated on the Calver crossroads and is instantly recognisable by its winged golden logo. We chose a particularly fresh and

windy day to visit Insomnia Café and in hindsight it was the wrong weather to wear a dress, a fact which became painfully clear when the breeze blew my skirt up in front of one of the staff members who good naturedly pretended nothing had happened. I myself forgot my embarrassing faux pas as soon as I had my hands around a delicious cup of cookie flavoured hot chocolate with cream and crumbled triple chocolate cookie on top (starts at £3.25). When a drink is good enough to make you forget that a stranger just accidentally saw your underwear then you know that it’s a good drink! Add a sweet caramel cappuccino to our order and we were ready to get ourselves some hot food. The Insomnia Café offers a wide selection of freshly prepared sandwiches, baguettes and toasties daily starting from £3.65, including multiple vegetarian options as well as your traditional lunch time fillings. We tucked in to a classic croquet monsieur served piping hot with sharp melted cheese and smoky ham (£4.45) and a tasty double cheese toastie with sweet caramelised red onion layered
between the slices of mature cheddar (£3.95). Is there anything better than a hot toast on a cold day? In addition to their savoury options they also offer a wide selection of cakes and tea loaves fresh every day (starting from £2.20 a slice). We didn’t need much convincing to decide desert was necessary and ordered a slice of rich banana and walnut tea loaf (£2.30), and a piece of light lemon drizzle sponge with a tart citrus glaze (£2.35). The cake slices are reasonably generous so be sure you have room for it! If cake isn’t really your thing (unlikely) then don’t worry, they also offer a variety of muffins, tarts and shortbreads starting from £2.20 as well as packaged biscuits and cinnamon waffles. Don’t worry if you don’t have time to sit in, the friendly staff are happy to wrap hot food to go and pour hot drinks into travel cups as well. Why not take your lunch nearby to Chatsworth House? Or grab a picnic blanket and choose a view point as your dining table? There are plenty of beautiful sights to take in around Calver and wherever you’re

New in for Autumn are a selection of seasonal hot drinks including a vegan Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate (£2.80) and a Pumpkin Pie latte (£2.75 for a regular, £2.95 large). All their hot drinks are customisable with several dairy free milks available as well as a number of syrups. All their coffee is made with 100 per cent Fair Trade coffee and the company runs a number of Fair Trade

a day, which for most of us, generally consisted of a short walk with those within our household close to home. As these restrictions eased from the middle of May, with an unlimited amount of exercise allowed, walks got longer and we ventured much further afield, perhaps discovering routes that we had not come across before. Cyclists had a bit more leeway and, after being limited to short, solo rides to begin with, could meet up with fellow riders for much longer excursions. It 112 www.sheffieldvibe.com
almost felt like being ‘back to normal’. It is believed that cycling levels increased by up to 300 per cent during the lockdown period with a predicted 1.3 million people buying bikes. The government were quick to jump on board with a £2billion package announced to create ‘a new era for walking and cycling’. Pop-up bike lanes with protected space for cycling, wider pavements, safer junctions, and cycle and bus-only corridors were created in towns and cities throughout the country supported by the existing Cycle to Work scheme
and new £50 cycle repair vouchers. Has there been a better time to get on a bike? Simon Geller, who is a keen cyclist and runs the sheffieldcycleroutes.org.uk blog, goes some way to explaining why cycling has proved so popular. “Conditions were ideal for cycling in early lockdown,” he said. “Boris had made it clear that cycling was OK for your one hour’s exercise, traffic was practically non-existent and the weather was perfect. Plus, we are so lucky in Sheffield to have the Peak District on our doorstep.

“I saw a family of four merrily cycling up Ecclesall Road South - before lockdown that might have been a family of three by the time they’d reached the other end!” Cycling has not only been convenient over the last few months but it has enormous health benefits too, as Simon says: “Cycling really ticks the boxes in terms of many of the issues that concern us today – road congestion and parking, air quality and pollution, and health issues such as obesity and heart disease, it has even been shown to improve mental health. “It also improves social cohesion If you see someone you know when you’re out cycling, whether they’re walking or cycling, you just stop for a chat - try doing that in a car! A cycle-friendly city is a liveable city.” It’s a sentiment echoed by cyclist and mobile bike mechanic Barry Parker, who owns Sheffield Bike Repairs. “Cycling is a great way of getting fit and losing weight,” he said. “It has great cardio abilities and can be enjoyed with hardly any money spent. It’s very social with mountain bike and road clubs all over the UK for all abilities and great for commuting to work at a low cost. It’s also good for mental health.” While regular riders have been taking advantage of the quieter roads, for novices it can be hard to know where to start. What kind of bike do you need? Where should you be riding? They’re all valid questions perhaps best left to those in the know, whether that’s someone you already know or one of the many cycling shops in the city. “It really depends on a lot of factors how old are you, what sort of cycling do you want to do, and so on. There’s a bike for every type of journey as well as some that will go pretty much anywhere,” Simon says to those who are thinking about getting a bike. “For city cycling I’d recommend a hybrid with an upright riding position so you can keep a good eye on what’s going on around you. A low-gear option will get you around in Sheffield but if you find the hills too daunting you should consider an electric bike - for advice see www.sheffieldcycleroutes.org/ebikes/ “For long-distance trips you can’t beat
the classic tourer, whereas if you want to burn around the Peak District a road bike will suit you - don’t take them on trails though, there’s a clue in the name. and that’s what mountain bikes are for.” You’ll have to think beyond the bike too, with safety and security accessories required too. “Some safety accessories are a good idea - bright clothing, lights, and you should consider wearing a helmet, although you don’t have to and they don’t make you invulnerable. Plus a good lock - spend at least ten per cent of the value of the bike.You can get third party insurance by joining one of the cycling organisations like Cycling UK.” Barry Parker’s business saw a big upturn during the lockdown period, with many people looking for help with new bikes are maintenance for ones that had probably been sat in the garage for months on end. “There was a big uptake in cycling due to gyms and swimming baths being closed and the government saying avoid public transport,” he said. “Since Covid restrictions hit the UK my business went up about 60 per cent and I had a big volume of new customers. The bikes were mainly ones that had been bought online as bike shops had completely sold out of low to mid-level bikes so bought from online retailers and gave them to me in boxes to build.” The good thing about cycling is that it is very easy to take up - get a bike and you’re good to go, but there is one thing to bear in mind, particularly if you’re commuting or riding on the roads for the first time. As Barry explains: “Read the cycle part of the Highway Code so you know the law and where you stand.” That’s sage advice for motorists too. RIDE1:1: Lower Don Valley RIDE Distance: 7 miles (10.7km) Time: 1 hour (approx.) http://www.sheffieldcycleroutes.org/lower-donvalley-circular/ 1. This is a pleasant, mostly off-road and flattish short ride that you can do from just about anywhere in Sheffield in under two hours. Starting at Blonk Street, take the Five Weirs Walk to Meadowhall and carry on round until you get to Meadowhall South tram stop. 2. Cross the bridge and turn right onto the canal towpath – follow this until you get to the bridge at Sheffield Arena. Cross the railway and tram tracks and follow the cycle route past the Arena and Don Valley Bowl, crossing Coleridge Road and entering the new Olympic Legacy Park. 3. Crossing Darnall Road, you can follow the cycle route through the housing estate, cross the tramway at Attercliffe stop, cross the canal and veer right to come onto Woodbourn Road. 4. Continue on the off-road track, crossing the road with care, then join the carriageway at Worthing Road to the right. Follow this down through Lumley Road to the incinerator at Bernard Road, turn right, then left at the roundabout at Effingham Road. You’ll see the Five Weirs Walk come in on the right and you can follow this back to the start point at Blonk Street, once again taking in the iconic Cobweb Bridge.

1. Starting at Sheffield Station, use Peak Park Anniversary route (NCN6) to Barkers Pool, head up Division Street, left on Devonshire Green (near cycle stands). Then it’s Broomspring Lane. 2. A popular meet-up point is the Sheffield University Concourse. If you meet there, take Glossop Road, then as below. 3. Left to Clarkehouse Road, right on Endcliffe Vale Road, left to Fulwood Road. Another popular meet-up spot is the Ranmoor Inn. Take Ranmoor Road, which is one-way, takes you up right to Snaithing Lane, right on to Carsick Hill Road, then right on to Carsick View Road. Take a left on to Tom Lane, right at Hillcote Close, and watch for the fooptpath link up to Hallam Primary. Turn right to follow the link up to Redmires Road. 4. For the shorter version turn left at Blackbrook Road (by the bus stop) right on Lodge Moor Road, right at Brownhill Lane, then left at Roper Hill (bit of a climb). For the long version (healthy option) continue to Soughey Lane, left on to Brown Hills Lane, the right on Roper Hill. 5. Follow through to Ringinglow, then left and first right at Houndkirk before following Sheephill Road on to Hathersage Road (busy junction and road – take care). Turn left on to Whitelow Lane, swooping down to Dore, Townhead Road then Rushley Road followed by Limb Lane, diverting into Ecclesall Woods. Follow the bridleway for Abbey Lane, cross this busy road, continue to Whirlowdale Road, cross again, up to Dobcroft Road. 6. Take the footpath opposite (technically a dismount) left onto Millhouses Lane, fork left to Button Hill then left to Dunkeld Road. Cross Ecclesall Road South with care and have a gentle saunter through the churchyard emerging at the top of Dobbin Hill. Swoop down and fork left for Greystones Drive, at the end of which is the Greystones pub, the end point. 7. To get back to Sheffield station, turn right down Greystones Road then left at the bottom on to Ecclesall Road. At Hunter’s Bar roundabout turn left onto Brocco Bank then follow the road onto Clarkehouse Road before joining Glossop Road near the Hallamshire Hospital. 8. Continue towards the city centre turning right onto Eldon Street then left onto Devonshire Street. From here you can retrace your steps on to the Peak Park Anniversary route and head back to the station.

RIDE RIDE3: 3: Glider Distance: 20 miles (32.2km) Time: 3 hours (approx.) http://www.sheffieldcycleroutes.org/up-in-my-glider/ 1. You can get to Hathersage on the Hope Valley Railway or by following NCN6 from Sheffield and dropping down to the village from Burbage (three opportunities to turn left). At the time of writing this route is particularly attractive because key sections of the roads are closed to motor traffic. Note that SatNavs will divert you onto different routes. 2. Take the road out of Hathersage towards Grindleford and turn right. A steady climb follows until you reach the gliding club which has a viewing area. 3. Start the downhill and then turn right to Great Hucklow (pub) and follow through to Windmill. Crossing the main road, follow Washhouse Bottom to the Anchor, a somewhat marooned nautical establishment in the middle of the White Peak. 4. Drop down to Tideswell which has shops, pubs and cafes and watch for the left turn onto The Lodge which cuts the corner and takes you into Litton. 5. Follow through and down to the A623 (Cressbook Dale is on your left). Take a left and turn right with great care shortly afterwards. This takes you up Silly Dale – it is silly, the rock outcrops are pathetic – so turn right at the Skeleton Barn and right again onto the road through Foolow and Eyam (pub, cafes, shop). 6. Keep left for New Road which is closed to motor traffic and drop down to the outskirts of Grindleford. Take a left on the B6001 and by turning left at Sir William Hill, staying on the B6001 you will return to Hathersage. However, this section of road is very unpleasant so if you are heading for Sheffield, go straight on for the B6521. An off-road route between Grindleford and Hathersage is badly needed – although the National Trust have opened some routes in the Longshaw Estate, this is not one of them.
RIDE4: 4: Lady Canning’s RIDE
Plantation Head out of Sheffield on Ringinglow Road and you’ll arrive at Lady Canning’s on the edge of Houndkirk Moor. A crowdfunding initiative saw the creation of two mountain bike trails – Blue Steel and Cooking on Gas. The aim with Lady Cannings is to offer fun trails for children, beginners and intermediate riders to enjoy and improve their skills before building up to the more technical trails in the Peak District. Blue Steel is 1.4km in length and is packed full of fun but there are no jumps or features that will put off the novice, with the trail twisting and turning through berms and rollers from top to bottom. The surface is generally smooth. Cooking on Gas is slightly longer at 1.6km and incorporates less in the way of features and is more of a flow trail with loads of opportunity to pump for speed over rollers and out of the massive berms. Centre of excellence As part of a drive to develop a world-leading technical education sector, RNN Group (Rotherham College, Dearne Valley College and North Notts College) has become part of the new WorldSkills UK Centre of Excellence. Food charity gets a lift Regather, in Sheffield is a not for profit, community food business which aim to create value-based food chains. Established for over a decade, the locally sourced fruit and veg box section of the business has doubled in size during the Covid-19 pandemic. As demand for the fruit and veg boxes grew – space became a premium. Initially, a marquee was put up to extend space outside the building, but this was not a suitable long term solution. “It came to a point where we either needed to move premises or look for other solutions to reconfigure the building,” says Gareth Roberts founder of Regather. “Due to the pandemic moving the business was not a viable option. After much consideration, we decided to repurpose the event space upstairs into another working area. The problem then was getting the 600-700kg of produce safely between floors.” Regather only had a very small area for a goods lift to be installed due to the main entrance and a staircase. Goods Lift design engineer Umar Lodhi was up to the task and created a MezzLift design that not only fits the space but does not block the entrance to the building when the doors were open. “Special thanks to Umar Lodhi, the designer who worked with us to make the lift fit within our restrictive space,” says Gareth. The MezzLight goods lift can safely move up to 250kg of goods between floors, providing Regather with the flexibility to reconfigure their workspace. This has helped the business to grow in line with the increased demand, without the need for downtime or the huge expense of moving.

Cash worries create physical and mental health issues, warns expert A business crisis isn’t just about cash flow and commercial concerns…it can also have a major impact on physical and mental wellbeing. Make a difference South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout is launching a major new fundraising campaign to make sure it will be there keeping young people off the streets as quickly and safely as possible as winter approaches. The past two years has seen an increase in the number of young people aged under 25 in the region who are sleeping rough. These vulnerable young people immediately became a priority for the charity, leading to the formation of a new street outreach team, Rapid Rehousing. The Rapid Rehousing team is made up of dedicated workers who actively go out into the community, identify homeless young people who need intensive support and help them to access accommodation and develop their long term living skills. Message of hope The Sheffield-based educational publisher, Twinkl, has unveiled a brand-new mural by local artist, Will Rea, along the front of the company’s Ecclesall Road headquarters. The mural was inspired by a poem written on the side of a package sent to the Sant’Anna School, a university in Pisa, Italy, during the coronavirus pandemic. The package contained protective equipment that was donated by former Chinese students of the University as an expression of gratitude and friendship to the academic community who had welcomed them so warmly. Sent on the package in Italian, the poem was written by the ancient Roman philosopher Seneca and translates to: ‘We are waves of the same sea, leaves of the same tree, flowers of the same garden.’ This uplifting message of solidarity now runs along the front of Twinkl’s headquarters as a reminder to the Sheffield community that everybody is in this together.

Sam’s Covid clear out supports St Luke’s shops A Coronavirus clean out has led to a bumper fashion bonanza for St Luke’s Hospice. Keen hospice supporter Sam Warsop usually clears her wardrobe at Christmas and Lent, with all discarded items going to St Luke’s. So when the lockdown began and the Grenoside-based RMC publishing manager found she had some extra time on her hands, she started to go through her unwanted fashion items and even persuaded husband Graham to add some of his discarded clothing to the pile. “It was a great way to fill some lockdown time and also a fantastic way to support St Luke’s,” said Sam as she made her donation drop off at the charity’s Ecclesall Road shop. “It’s really very therapeutic to go through your wardrobes occasionally and take a long hard look at what you’re not wearing any more, especially when you know you are also supporting a charity like St Luke’s.” Donations can be left at St Luke’s shops which are now reopen or at the St Luke’s Donation Centre every Monday and Friday between 12 noon and 3pm. Natalie’s goes for a new look When Natalie Rebbeck saw the levels of support her grandmother Patricia Dewick received during her time as a patient at St Luke’s Hospice, she decided she had to do something to support the charity. And that’s why, after raising more than £700 to be shared between St Luke’s and the Jessop Wing Bereavement Suite, she’s missing a good 40cm from her previously very long hair! “My mammar loved the time she spent at St Luke’s and was there several times,” said Natalie. “She always seemed much more chilled out after she had been at St Luke’s and at the end she actually said that although she didn’t have much, what she did have she wanted to be donated to St Luke’s. “That got me thinking about what I could do too and that’s when I decided I would have my hair cut. “I’ve always had long hair - it was right down to my bottom - so it was a huge deal even having the end cut off but I did it because I saw everything my mammar went through and how much St Luke’s did for her.”

pandemic. Giving gifts during your lifetime is certainly an option to be considered. Here, Anne Rogers, partner and head of our private client team, discusses how this can be done and what the inheritance tax (IHT) implications are. If your estate is likely to be valued at over your nil rate band (NRB) of £325,000, or £650,000 if you are married (which is the amount you can
leave when you die without attracting inheritance tax), your beneficiaries will pay 40 per cent tax on anything above that. If your estate includes your home and you are leaving it to your direct descendants, they can benefit from the residence nil rate band (RNRB) and inherit up to £1million pounds IHT free. and family now if you want to – as long as you follow strict rules – as there are certain gifts that you can give during your lifetime that will reduce your estate and, hence, the amount of inheritance tax payable.
When are gifts IHT free? In general, if you make a gift to someone more than seven years before your death, the value of that gift will not be included in your estate, so no inheritance tax will be payable on it. Gifts given in this way are known as potentially exempt transfers, which means that if you die within seven years of making the gift, the value of that gift becomes part of your estate and IHT is payable if your estate exceeds your NRB. If your gifts mean that IHT does become payable, it reduces depending on how long you live after you give them. This is known as taper relief. The full tax of 40 per cent is payable if the gifts were given in the three years before you die, reducing by 8 per cent every year until no IHT is payable if the gifts were given seven years after you die.You can find out more about taper relief, with an example, on our web page www.graysons.co.uk/private-wealth/. This is often referred to as the sevenyear rule. You can gift as much as you like to your spouse or civil partner during your lifetime and no IHT will be payable on that when you die, provided you both live in the UK (this does not include unmarried partners). However, capital gains tax may be payable if the gift is not cash but consists of property or shares in a business, for example.You should take professional advice relating to this and our private client experts are happy to help.
What tax-free gifts can I give? Every year, during your lifetime, you have an annual gift allowance of £3,000, known as the annual exemption, which can be used to give gifts to anyone and will not be included in your estate – even if you die within seven years. This allowance can be carried over to the following year if it is not used, so you can give up to £6,000 in gifts in the second year. It can only be carried over once. The allowance is per individual, so you can give gifts of up £6,000 a year if you are a couple. In addition to this, you can give other gifts that will not attract IHT if you die
within seven years of giving them. These include: • Wedding or civil partnership gifts of up to £5,000 for each child, up to £2,500 for each grandchild and up to £1,000 for anyone else. This is an annual allowance. • Help with living costs for a spouse or ex-spouse, a civil partner or ex-civil partner, children under 18 or who are in full-time education or elderly, ill or disabled dependants. • As many gifts of up to £250 per person as you would like to give, as long as that person has not benefited from one of the other exempted gifts. • Gifts to some national institutions, such as universities or museums. • Gifts to political parties that have had at least two members in the House of Commons following the last election before the donation is made, or one member and the party had received at least 150,000 votes. • Gifts to qualifying charities or charitable organisations. Also, if you leave more than 10 per cent of your net estate (the taxable amount after exemptions and the nil rate band is applied) to charities in your will, IHT liability is reduced from the standard 40 per cent to 36 per cent. • Small, regular gifts to your children out of money on which you have already paid income tax, provided your normal lifestyle is not affected. This includes gifts made at Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries or payments such as insurance premiums or into a savings account. It can also be a way for grandparents to pay regular school fees.
What should I watch out for? The seven-year rule does not apply if you give away an asset but continue to benefit from it. For example, if you give your home to your children, but continue to live in it, rent-free, the house will be considered part of your estate and IHT will be payable if you exceed your NRB or RNRB. It is vital that you keep details of gifts you have given during your lifetime so that your personal representative can deal with them accurately when you die, can properly value your estate and your IHT liability is properly assessed. Anne says: “The coronavirus pandemic certainly seems to have focused people’s minds on getting their financial affairs in

order, including how they can help their families now and reduce their inheritance tax at the same time. “I have found that many are not fully aware of the ability to use gift giving as a tool to reduce IHT. Of course, there are strict rules, but it is certainly possible to help your family financially now. I would advise that if you are looking at ways of reducing IHT and want to give money to your family, you don’t delay. “The seven-year rule currently in place is strict, but it works well. Solid update The Hyundai I30 is a solid and wellrespected member in the hatchback world. Now the I30 has undergone some updates with new equipment enhancements, updated interior and exterior styling as well as some new engine additions. At the front there are slimmer headlights with new V-shaped signature LED daytime running lights. At the rear there is a new bumper design as well as new LED rear combination lamps. Redesigned diamond-cut 16-inch or 17inch alloy wheels are also new additions. The I30 range now boasts an allelectric powertrain line-up with a 118bhp or 134bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged GDI 48V hybrid engine with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. Benchmark in luxury The S-Class is the luxury crown jewel in the Mercedes-Benz line-up, being the benchmark for all other luxury saloon cars to match to. Available to order now and starting from £78,705, the S-Class comes in S350d, S400d and S500 forms. The S350d comes with an inline six-cylinder diesel engine producing 286bhp and 600NM of torque. The S400d uses the same diesel engine but produces 330bhp and 700NM of torque. The S500 uses a 435hp petrol engine with a combined 48V on-board electrical system. Power to Peugeot Peugeot is launching their new high-performance division – “Peugeot Sport Engineered” – with the release of the Peugeot Sport Engineered 508, a 4WD hybrid powerhouse for those who seek thrills without the sporty powerhouse fuel bills. This houses the most powerful powertrain ever fitted by Peugeot to one of their production cars. It has 360bhp and 520NM of torque. No word as yet on official mpg figures or fuel range, however Peugeot states in produces 46g/km of CO2 and 139MPG when driven extremely economically. Peugeot claim the 508 can be driven on electric only power for 26 miles and up to 86mph. Performance figures include a 5.2s 0-62mph time, 3.0s from 50-74mph and a vmax of 155mph.
