Moonlight Textiles are a third-generation family business established in 1985 and continue to measure, manufacture, supply and install from their premises on Abbeydale Road. The fact that they do everything in-house is something they still pride themselves on today. Paul took over as managing director from his father, Robert, in 2008 and has not only continued the family legacy but has grown it too. “It’s a formula that has worked for 40 years,” said Paul. “From your initial enquiry we can measure, manufacture and then install with the minimum of fuss. We try to make it as seamless for our customers as possible.” Five seamstresses – many of whom have been there for over 30 years – work alongside two full-time installers. Usually wearing a business suit, parents have occasionally seen him wearing bright red climbing trousers and other, lurid, outdoor gear. David has another life… “It all started as a child,” says David. “An uncle used to take me onto the moors around the Holme Valley and occasionally in the Peak District. I got the outdoor bug age 11 and never looked back.” David eventually went on to become a extreme ascents under his belt. to support the family. This also meant focussing on his career as a teacher. “It was the Covid pandemic that really opened things up,” David recalls. “I had stuff such as the Aonach Eagach Ridge in Glencoe, Bidean nam Bian in full winter conditions (also in Glencoe) and several summits on the Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye to name just a few. The hills became crowded in the pandemic and I wanted more solitude.” The answer was to go steeper. The big change came when he attended an introductory rock-climbing day on Stanage Edge in the Peak District. “It was as if I’d never been away from the rock. I could remember how to do the

moves and still had trust in the ropes. The body (now 40 years older) had other ideas though. I would know what to do and by arms would refuse!” The trick for anyone is to work on technique – strength will only get you so far. Back in the eighties in his heyday, David had no support from his parents and worked extra shifts while studying to buy gear. He found partners and training from the Vibram Mountaineering Club in Brighouse. There weren’t any indoor walls either David remembers. Gear is still expensive but there is more choice these days. This was illustrated recently when David followed a climbing friend up a route in Stoney Middleton

He admires the bravery of the people who " didn’t have the high-quality gear we have nowadays. He also turned his attention back to ice climbing. “UK stuff is poor these days,” he observes. “It doesn’t come into condition like it did in the eighties, even in Scotland. It’s just too warm.” He now goes abroad to get good conditions, especially Norway. “The ice is usually reliable although it can be very dangerous as it is not consistent like rock. As the temperature changes, the ice changes. There is also the risk of large lumps falling off and of avalanche.” Indeed, earlier this year, he had met some climbers from the forces in Rjukan. The following day, two were involved in an accident at the top of a route when they were avalanched. One died and it took rescue services nearly 24 hours to lower the other climber down. Did this put David off? “Not really. Risk is a part of the sport. Experience and being prepared to back-off are important. There is no way I would have gone up in those conditions.” That isn’t to say that David hasn’t experienced hairy moments. The worst was in the Alps when a storm came in much earlier than forecast and he was caught on Cosmiques Arete on the Aguille du Midi. “We were saved by the gendarmes (huge spikes of granite), otherwise we would have been totally exposed.” “The reality is that risk can’t be avoided,” muses David, “you just mitigate it.” We wonder why he continues but David tells us that being in the mountains is so life-enhancing that he couldn’t be without it. " ! ! " "!! a member of a Mountain Rescue team, so knows some of the risks and what drives people to the high places. Finally, we ask David if he has any advice for youngsters starting out. “Good for you,” he says. “Remember though, that being a good climber on an indoor wall is very different from doing it outside. Spend some time learning the ropes with experienced people.”

Walkers invited to take on High Peak Trail challenge

Walkers of all ages and abilities are being invited to step out into the Peak District this March to raise vital funds for end of life care in North Derbyshire. Ashgate Hospice’s annual High Peak Trail Walk returns this spring on Sunday 22 March, following the historic route of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway and offering a choice of distances to suit different levels of experience. Participants will gather at Cromford Meadows before being taken by coach to their chosen starting point, with options including a 17-mile trek, an 11-mile walk, or a shorter 3.5-mile route suitable for less experienced walkers and children. All routes take in the scenic Derbyshire countryside, with support and refreshments provided along the way. He had a double room so my younger brother and sisters could stay overnight, which meant everything to our family. “Ashgate allowed us to see my dad settled and without pain. That’s something I will always cherish.” Entry costs for the High Peak Trail Walk depend on the distance chosen. The 17-mile and 11-mile routes cost £15 per adult, while the 3.5-mile walk costs £10 for adults and £5 per child. Entry includes a t-shirt, medal, coach transfer to the chosen starting point and refreshments along the route. In 2012 Mrs Petts was given the

opportunity to set up a Post 16 provision Hope Valley College for 18 M atmonths, after initially joining from for young people with EHCPs and thus

Eckington School in 2007 as an English and Media Studies teacher. She doesn’t feel that there’s a typical day for a headteacher as each day is different but that’s what makes the job so interesting. Teaching still forms part of the working day which is usually taken up with meetings, emails as well as break and lunch duty. “I enjoy going to lessons to see what work students are doing as this is what I work hard on every day – supporting our staff to provide the best possible experience for students,” she said. Asked what she enjoys most about her role, Mrs Petts said: “I enjoy spending time with our young people. It is the best part of the job. As I have become a headteacher this is harder to do but I make sure that every break and lunch I oversee the lunch queue so that I can chat with students about their day.”

It’s about quality over quantity.” Christmas and New Year weddings surged in popularity this year. “There’s something magical about the Peak District in winter,” Katie says. “Venues like The Maynard and The Peacock at Rowsley look incredible with candlelight, twinkling lights and festive menus. Guests are relaxed, everyone’s in celebratory mode - it’s one of my favourite times of year.”

Looking ahead to 2026

So what’s next? According to Katie, 2026 will see even more creativity and colour. “We’re expecting to see bold and a continued focus on food and experience. Couples want to wow their guests, but they also want their day to feel effortless and fun.” The growing appetite for personalised, intimate celebrations will continue, especially in venues with strong character and great food. “Every couple is different,” Katie adds. “Our job is to make sure their venue feels like an extension of them celebration or a laid-back weekend gathering with family and friends.”

Engagement season begins

And as the new year begins, we’re entering what’s affectionately known as engagement season - the period number of proposals take place, driven by Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day. “It’s such an exciting time,” Katie says. “The festive season has a natural sense of magic and togetherness - the perfect moment for a proposal. By January, we’ll start seeing newly engaged couples touring venues and planning their big day for 2026 and beyond.” For those newly engaged, Katie’s advice is simple: “Visit venues early, take your time, and choose somewhere that feels like you.
