Peacock does you proud THE SETTING’S RELAXED, THE STANDARDS ARE SKY-HIGH, SAYS CHRIS WILSON. ou can tell at a glance that much thought, time and love has been lavished on the latest makeover at one of the most popular country pubs in Derbyshire, the Peacock at Cutthorpe. From the immaculate beer garden with its pretty floral displays to the bathrooms with their gorgeous Moroccan tiles and high-tech hand driers, everything is just so. Since my last visit a few years back, a redesign of the considerable indoor space has created a more relaxed bar area and a private dining room that allows groups of up to 12 to have a little privacy and still feel part of the pub. Meanwhile, the menu - a mix of pub classics and finer dining dishes - is nicely balanced. General manager Tim Treeby is a familiar face, having spent many years overseeing hugely popular food venues in Sheffield, such as the Cricket Inn in Totley and Thyme Café in Broomhill, and he runs a tight ship. Service is cheerful and very efficient. Presentation is pristine, even with the simplest dishes. Fish and chips was most definitely the most popular main course coming out of the kitchen when we visited, and the mushy peas and tartare sauce showed up a treat on shiny black plates.

Our starters looked pretty special, too. Pearl barley risotto (£6) was a vivid green courtesy of asparagus and watercress, with shavings of Pecorino cheese melting splendidly over the top. It was perfectly cooked and deeply comforting. Pan seared scallops (£9) were sweet, slightly caramelised and sparkling fresh. Served with florets of cauliflower, cooked tempura-style in crunchy batter, on a cauliflower and truffle sauce, they helped provide the most immaculate start to a meal as we could remember for many months. Mains continued the sky-high standards. Sautéed duck breast (£18) was a glorious shade of pink with a not-too-sweet cherry sauce on the side. Those cherries dotted around the plate were soaked in booze to provide little bombs of mouth-numbing pleasure and the accompanying duck leg croquette and wedge of potato rosti satisfied the carb craving with considerable panache. That was quite a cheffy main course, and pretty special it was too. By contrast, fillet steak (£23.95) was presented with no frills. Just as well, this glorious hunk of seared, medium-rare meat could speak for itself. Hung for 28 days and served with peppercorn sauce, good chips and the usual trimmings, it provided my carnivorous companion with
much comfort. After such substantial main courses, we were looking to end our meal on a lighter note. Chocolate parfait with cinder toffee, figs and hazelnuts (£6) and ricotta semi-fredo with berry compote and rhubarb (£6) rounded the evening off in the relaxed, special style that had been evident from the moment we arrived. There is a good choice of hand-pulled beers and a very decent wine list including a fantastic Argentinian Malbec, Dante Robino (£5.50 glass). Split second timing, breath-taking fire jumps and pyramids on wheels are just some of the stunning tricks crowds can expect from the world famous youth motorcycle team, whose youngest member is just five years old. The Grand Ring will also be the site for thrilling landings from the Jump4Heroes human flight team, made up of serving and former members of the military. Continuing with the aerial attractions, visitors will once again be treated to an awe-inspiring

aerobatic display by the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force team famous for their trademark combinations of close formation flying, dynamic loops and rolls appearing on Friday and Sunday. The popular Household Cavalry Musical Ride will be back performing cavalry drill movements set to music showcasing the courage, skill, precision and discipline required by the riders. As part of the display, Stablemen, or ‘Rough Riders’ lie on the ground with their horses, a skill which can take up to four months of training to teach and is a throwback to when horses went into battle and would need to take cover. Birds and animals once again feature prominently over the three days. Always popular is CJ’s Birds of Prey, a unique father and daughter act lead by Charlotte Hill who has trained in the art of falconry in various countries across the world. The duo’s bubbling enthusiasm and skill has led to them becoming one of the most popular birds of prey display teams in the UK. Other animal attractions in the Grand Ring include the Dog and Duck Show featuring untrained dogs herding ducks; Allcomers’s Dog Racing where dogs and owners race across the arena and the Hound Parade. Kicking off each day are the Mounted Games where teams of riders show their amazing skills in relay and obstacle races all performed at blistering speed. hesterfield’s businesses were put under the national spotlight in July when BBC Radio 5 Live came to town on the back the latest GDP figures which were up across the board. And Chesterfield’s story wasn’t any different. If you were listening on 27 July you’ll have heard business reporter Colletta Smith interview Nick Ibbotson from Ibbotson’s Fresh Produce, Stuart Downing from Casa Hotel, James Brand from United Cast Bar and Russ Gratton from Recon Electrical – all Chesterfield businesses. I’m delighted to say that all of them – including the customers at Recon Electrical - had the same story to tell; that business in the last quarter had been good. People want to come to Chesterfield for work and pleasure. Casa’s figures bear this out. It has had more than 2000 bookings this year and already has people booked for 2017. It’s a similar story in our town, employment is the highest it has ever been for the town since records began. However, we must keep this momentum going and not let the uncertainty brought about by the EU referendum result derail the town’s growth and future. We need to be sure we don’t talk ourselves into a recession. Chesterfield is in a strong

position with major developments, like Markham Vale, well underway and already creating hundreds of jobs. The Great Bear distribution centre is soon to open at Markham Vale and will create a further 400 jobs this year. We’re a town of entrepreneurs and time and time again we show how we can adapt, change and overcome. Nowhere was that more evident than at the recent judging for the Food Producer of the Year title in the 2016 Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards. It was full of surprises – a micro herb producer from Whittington Moor, a smoke and cured meat specialist from Bolsover, a smoothie and juice producer from Tupton and a honey producer from Clowne, to name but a few. Without exception every entrant was an owner managed business, many of them tucked away in Chesterfield quietly getting on with their daily business and supplying produce locally, regionally and nationally. I’m delighted that Chesterfield Borough Council is helping town’s entrepreneurs even further with its latest plans for Northern Gateway. It has announced it will be building a business enterprise centre on part of the Donut car park for start-up and small and medium sized businesses. The Council’s Dunston and Tapton Innovation Centres already have a great track record for incubating and nurturing business and I for one am delighted that Chesterfield is able to look ahead and continue with its plans for growth and prosperity even in these times of uncertainty.
