Restoring a nationalTREASURE

The Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust is almost ten years into its long-term regeneration project of this great country house. We spoke to chief executive Sarah McLeod about progress, inclusivity and future plans for the estate.

Often referred to as the ‘Palace of the North’, Wentworth Woodhouse is arguably the most exciting and challenging regeneration project of our generation.

The house was built for the 1st Marquess of Rockingham around 1725 before being passed to the Fitzwilliam family four decades later and has largely been a private

residence for the last 300 years.

Wentworth Woodhouse is best known for having the longest principle façade of any country house in the UK – a 1720s Baroque west front and larger 1730s Palladian east front – which contain more grand rooms than Buckingham Palace. In total the house has over 300 rooms, the most important being a double-height marble saloon,

pillared lower hall, painted drawing room, library and Whistlejacket room. And not forgetting the 87 acres of beautiful grounds. Following World War II, where the house served as the Training Depot and Headquarters of the Intelligence Corps, it was leased to the West Riding County Council for use as a teacher training college. In 1950 the house became the

“Wentworth Woodhouse was on my radar because I knew it was a project that everybody was talking about. It’s got a funny magnetism, it draws people in.”

Lady Mabel College of Physical Education, Polytechnic. Then in 1986, the polytechnic property.

In 1989 it was purchased by Mr Wensley Haydon-Baillie for use as a private residence and then sold again to Mr Clifford Newbold and his family in 1998.

In 2017 the Newbolds sold the house to the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (WWPT), who have now been charged with bringing this palace back to life.

Led by chief executive Sarah McLeod, the trust’s aims are to preserve the house and grounds on a long-term sustainable uses for those parts of the property not open

to the public; and to raise funds for both acquisition and repairs and other essentials.

WWPT, a charitable company limited by guarantee, estimate the costs to achieve this to be around £200million – all of which must be raised by themselves.

“There was nothing here, it wasn’t a visitor attraction and there was water pouring in everywhere,” Sarah recalls of those early days. “And there was no money, nothing, we had to start a business from scratch.”

Sarah is no stranger to heritage projects and joined the trust after 16 years at Cromford Mills, where she won a Europa Nostra award. Although she confessed to knowing nothing about stately homes.

“I’d never worked in a stately home in my life but in conservation terms, the principles are all the same,” she says. “Wentworth Woodhouse was on my radar because I knew it was a project that everybody was talking about. It’s got a funny magnetism, it draws people in.”

Daunted as she may have been, Sarah has embraced the challenge and over the last nine years the trust has completed over £30million-worth of improvements, including that leaky roof and much more.

Wentworth Woodhouse now operates as a visitor attraction six days a week, albeit as an ongoing restoration project, and last year attracted 180,000 visitors. It employs over 100 paid staff and has over 400 active volunteers, many of whom work full-time.

“We’ve come a long way from nothing to be what we are today,” adds Sarah. “Every year it becomes more expensive to be here because we’ve got more staff, we’re using more of the building…

“We’ve had amazing support from people like the National Trust but we really rely heavily on every single cup of tea we sell, every donation we receive. It’s critical to the survival of the trust.”

from scratch has actually given the trust an advantage as they have been to rebuild to implement their own philosophy, which ensures the house is open to absolutely everybody.

“Houses like this are very white, very middle class and we’ve turned that on its head,” explains Sarah. “We said if we’re going to do this it’s got to be for everybody, we’ve got to be able to bring opportunity to people’s lives that they didn’t have before. Otherwise what’s the point in raising £200million to restore a building when you’ve got people in food bank?”

Creating these opportunities extends far beyond encouraging people to visit the house but in how they can contribute to

its restoration and maintenance. One of the trust’s next big projects is the creation of a Heritage Skills Centre of Excellence alongside Chatsworth and York Minster.

people to consider heritage maintenance as a career.

“I got into a lot of schools and nobody knows about heritage skills as a career,” says Sarah. “If you go to any construction courses in South Yorkshire, none of them teach pre-1919 buildings. We have got a massive historic stock of buildings, we just don’t have the skills for people to restore, repair and maintain them.”

As well as providing training, the skills centre will also aim to connect people

communities and making the economy in this part of the world stronger.

Similarly, Wentworth Woodhouse also grounds have regularly been used for production companies lamented the skills shortage in the sector.

“We thought that was crazy as we’ve got loads of unemployed people in this part of the world,” explains Sarah. “We managed to get funding to do skills training and now have a production team. The idea is when insist they take our trainees as runners on

create its own YouTube channel, with posts weekly and is an extra way of supporting them through views and subscriptions.

Sarah is keen to embrace technology and from August headset tours will become standard with any ticketed entry to the house and gardens. These will tell you about the history of the house but also about the restoration as well.

The Heritage Skills Centre of Excellence is just one of three major projects being undertaken at present. The trust are also restoring the chapel but perhaps the biggest and most ambitious is called ‘Putting Our House in Order’, a £50million project that aims to restore all state rooms as world class gallery space. This would include major infrastructure investment and reposition Wentworth as not just a visitor attraction but as a leading cultural venue as well.

“I’d like to think I will get these project done before I retire, that’s my challenge,” says 59-year-old Sarah. “I would be really happy to hand it over at that point to

taste of the national spotlight last year when it hosted the RHS Flower Show, which Sarah believes brought an extra 60,000 visitors through their gates. Such was its success that discussions are already underway to bring the show back in 2028 and every three years thereafter.

So why did the RHS choose Wentworth?

“We have started to build a really good reputation across the UK for inclusion and diversity on a level that other stately homes really struggle with,” explains Sarah. “The RHS are really determined to engage young people and low income families to get involved with gardening. They best way for them to do that is to go out into those communities and this is the perfect location in that sense.”

It all comes back to the trust being able to set an agenda from the beginning and rebuilding the house in a way that they believe it should be.

“It is about restoration to the highest standard and creating a visitor experience, but ultimately it’s about helping everybody in this part of the world to maximise their potential,” concludes Sarah.

They’ve certainly achieved a lot in a short space of time and have much more to come.

A delight for theSENSES

A visit to Cutlers Spice is an immersive experience, writes Richard Abbey.

here’s nothing like the sound of a sizzle to pique your interest and we were treated to such theatre on a recent visit to Cutlers Spice, which proved to be a treat for all the senses.

TThis aural stimulus was soon overtaken by smoky aromas as our waitress neared our table and delivered our starter dishes - Hari lal tikka (£11.50) for me and Tandoori lamb chops (£6.50) for my dining companion.

Both arrived on a hot, smoking skillet and, after digging in, tasted every bit as good as they looked. My dish - chicken and lamb tikka stir-fry with onion, peppers, mushrooms and potatoes – had a wonderful whilst the lamb chops had plenty of spice

Although we’d already tucked into poppadoms (90p each) and a pickle tray with seven different choices (£4.50), it was these dishes that really set the tone for the evening that was only bettered by our main course choices, which had been recommended by co-owner Habib Rahman.

Having asked for recommendations, he pointed us in the direction of the House of lamb and my dining partner’s choice of

The lamb staff curry (£12.90) is made from ‘mother’s recipe’ and had a real homely feel thanks to the ceramic dish it was served in. In keeping with traditional apna-style curries, this consisted of slowcooked on the bone lamb bhuna and was and paired really well with the onion pilau (£4.20) – another recommendation from Habib.

Across the table, the garlic chilli fangash (£12.50) was a piquant dish made with garlic pickle-based sauce with wild chillies.

We also shared a portion of pilau rice (£3.90) and a peshwari naan (£4.20) and washed down our food with glasses of draught Cobra (£5.95) and Cobra alcohol free (£3.50) beers.

In partnership with chef Saiful, Habib took over Cutlers Spice in November last year and has seen its reputation slowly grown over the last eight months or so. Since visiting late in 2025, the interior of traditional murals complementing the cream-coloured seating. There’s two large dining areas with a sectioned off private space for larger parties as well as a decentsized bar areas.

Staff are friendly and welcoming and it’s worth asking them for advice if you fancy steering yourself away from the tried and tested.

The sights, sounds and smells will certainly capture your imagination but too.

Cutlers Spice also offer takeaway and offer both a pick-up and delivery service.

Cathedral really does live up to its motto as ‘a place for all people’. The cross section of visitors to this little corner of the building are all welcomed warmly and manager Matt Poorian spends time speaking to every table. It’s this kind of personal service that sets 1554 apart.

But that’s not to say that the coffee isn’t good, because it is and made by the aptlynamed Heavenly Coffee company. And the food prides itself on being homemade and includes everything from sandwiches and soups to jacket potatoes and salads as well as lots of sweet treats and Our Cow Molly ice cream.

There’s a Quiche of the day – cheddar and pickle on the day of our visit – as well as Deli salad of the day (pesto, tomato and olive pasta) and Soup of the day, which my dining companion chose to start. The celery and apple version (£5.80), served with a warm bread roll, was thick and creamy with a hint of sweetness.

Although tempted by the Wateralls pork pie I opted for the spinach and feta pasty (£7.85), which was served with salad leaves, coleslaw and red onion relish. Warm, crispy pastry with a hint of herbs

Worth the WAIT

To say getting Watt Bar off the ground has been a labour of love for owner Andy Grice is something of an understatement. The seed of the idea to convert an old electrical substation on Charles Street into an all-day bar started way back in 2018 but complications with planning and then the pandemic have constantly delayed the project.

But all power to Andy who persevered and in the meantime opened the Dark Horse Bar at Banner Cross, The Lock Inn at Victoria Quays and became part of the Little Mesters Brewing Company. The dream of Watt Bar became a reality at the doors.

First off, it’s in a great location just

walk from Cambridge Street and the new Heart of the City. Second, there’s a goodsized terrace out front with bench seating and bright yellow umbrellas, in-keeping with the interior, which is understated with an industrial feel. The high ceilings and bi-fold windows add to the feeling of space but it’s comfortable with a mix of high and

low tables and banquettes.

If you’ve ever been to the Dark Horse or Lock Inn you’ll know the bar is wellstocked – not just with beer but wine and cocktails too – and this was no exception.

Food is provided by Goobers Fine Dirty Dining with a morning breakfast/brunch menu available from 9am-2pm and then lunch/dinner from 12-9pm. There’s a real southern American slant to the dishes on offer with lots of Creole and Cajun spicing and choices including collard greens, smoked black beans and fried chicken.

We’d arrived on a midweek evening and were impressed by the choice of four subs, two burgers, 12 small plates, four loaded

chicken bucket for two or four (£30/£60) was particularly impressive and included corn fritters, chicken gravy, fries, pickles and slaw.

My wife and I took recommendations from our host and decided to share a few of the small plates as well as a hearty portion of Philly cheeseteak loaded fries (£14), which were piled high with steak, onions, peppers and Cheese Whizz.

Our particularly highlight was the sweet and sour pork belly bites (£9) which were

meaty and tender and topped with crunchy crackling. Soft red onions and diced pineapple added contrasting accents.

We also tried some of those Cajun spiced corn fritters (£7.50) and Dirty mac and cheese topped with crushed Cheetos (£7.50) – both excellent.

We’d brought my son along too and he loved the Goobers Smash burger (£15)two 3oz patties, smoked bacon, American cheese, pickles, iceberg and burger sauce on a brioche bun with fries.

I suppose Watt Bar is not your ‘three courses’ kind of place but it felt right to give their desserts a try too – the pecan pie (£8) was a sweet slice of Americana and a

Largest-ever Urban Soul Orchestra to perform Classic Ibiza at Chatsworth.

As Classic Ibiza’s return to the grounds of Chatsworth House on Saturday 11 July draws closer, the concert’s organisers have announced further plans in what they are promising will be their biggest-ever celebration of Balearic-infused house music.

Creating a symphonic wall-of-sound, half-hour show will feature a total of 45 Urban Soul Orchestra (USO) musicians and vocalists – the largest-ever number to grace the stage at Classic Ibiza, up from 32 in previous years.

USO’s Stephen Hussey, conductor, arranger and musical producer for Classic Ibiza, says: “I’ve got to admit that I feel a bit like a kid in a toy shop, thinking about the exciting possibilities to have musical fun with all the new instruments I’ve now

“By adding more strings, brass, woodwind and percussion to the show, we’ll create such an awe-inspiring wallof-sound, which is literally going to blow our Chatsworth audience away!”

In addition to everyone’s favourite dance anthems, performed by Urban

Soul Orchestra and DJ Goldierocks, this summer’s extended Classic Ibiza features a new live chill-out set, fresh performances by show debutant DJ Meera, and even more guest vocals from London Community Gospel Choir.

Lisa Ward, promoter and owner of Classic Ibiza, adds: “Every year we set ourselves the challenge of building on the success of our previous tour. That was pretty daunting this year considering how incredible our 10th anniversary celebrations were, but we’ve only gone and done it!

“Whether you’ve been before or are new to Classic Ibiza, you’re going to want to witness what we’ve got in store at Chatsworth this summer. We’ve upped the ante yet again and can’t wait to share the experience with everyone.”

In a further update, Classic Ibiza has announced the results of its annual track poll. The three most popular chill-out tracks, voted for by the show’s 62,000 social media followers, are: Belfast (Orbital), Les Nuits (Nightmares On Wax) and Little Fluffy Clouds (The Orb). They’ll be joining the new 45-minute

Chill-Out Set, performed by members of Urban Soul Orchestra and DJ Meera.

Lisa Ward says: “Last summer’s 10th anniversary tour was our most successful ever in terms of audience numbers and the plaudits we received. People particularly loved the euphoric wall-ofsound created by Stephen Hussey’s Urban Soul Orchestra and London Community Gospel Choir. The concert was so good that they wanted it to last longer, so that’s exactly what we’re giving them.

“This summer’s extended programme, featuring new DJ sets and even more LCGC guest vocals, is going to take the show to new heights. It goes without saying that we’ll be showcasing everyone’s favourite house anthems, but I’m particularly looking forward to USO working their magic on some classic chill-out tracks.”

Sponsored by Adnams Ghost Ship, tickets to Classic Ibiza at Chatsworth are selling fast. The show is proud to be supporting Chatsworth House Trust and Ashgate Hospice charities. For tickets and further information, including show times, visit: classicibiza.co.uk/Chatsworth

Care Quality Commission rates The Glen Private Nursing Home as Outstanding.

Every person, whether staff, colleagues from other organisations, people using the service, or their families, felt genuinely heard, respected, and treated with kindness.

“It was positive to hear the service treated people as individuals and was exceptional in how they made sure people’s care, support and treatment met their needs and preferences. Many relatives spoke highly about the care their loved one was receiving. One person told us that their relative is really happy at the home, so their not worrying about them. The person used to need a lot of support from their family, but they don’t need this now, so they can

Walk through Whiteley Woods towards Fulwood and you’ll happen upon Forge Dam, a popular destination for families and walkers. It provides a beautiful place to stop for a break to admire the views or to enjoy a drink or something to eat from the cafe. There is also a children’s playground with a much talked about slide built into the hillside.

The dam itself is silting up very quickly and a restoration project is underway to remove the silt, reduce the size of the island

A grand design DESTINATION

Still considered something of a hidden gem, the David Mellor Design Museum in Hathersage is a destination that should not be overlooked.

Good design can improve your life. That was the simple belief held by David Mellor CBE, who was considered one of the most silversmiths of the 20th century.

unusual in that he operated as designer, manufacturer and retailer and felt it his mission to improve design standards over a broad spectrum, directly affecting many people’s lives.

Although best known for his ranges of stainless steel and silver cutlery, he was also responsible for redesigning the use today, as well as benches, bus shelters, bins and a square post box.

Mellor Design Museum in Hathersage, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Although having been open since 2006, and close to Hathersage train station, is considered a true design destination that draws people from far and wide.

The Design Museum merges effortlessly with the onsite café and sits alongside a well-stocked shop as well as the Round Building, the on-site factory which was

the David Mellor cutlery is made. This is a striking, award-winning building, designed by architect Sir Michael Hopkins, a glimpse inside of which can be seen through one of their guided tours.

Previous to the move to Hathersage, David had been based in his home city where he operated from an historic building in Broomhall. As well as the factory, museum and café in the Peak District, there are also shops in Marylebone and Sloane Square in London.

David took a step back in 2005 and was succeed by his son, Corin, as creative director in 2006 who has since designed new ranges of cutlery and kitchen knives

as well as developed new products in new glassware and wooden kitchen accessories.

legacy lives on.

Corin lives on site in Hathersage with his family – he’s never too far from the workshop – but also spends much of his time in London overseeing the shops there. When I meet up with him at the museum, he tells me about a very recent project at their Sloane Square store as part of ‘Chelsea in Bloom’, a free garden-inspired competition that runs alongside Chelsea Flower Show.

“We’ve done this crazy rocket made out of pans,” Corin explains. “We made it all in the factory but then have worked with as well.”

machine). ‘The Silver Machine’, as it was called, eventually won the Silver medal in the competition, which saw them go up against the likes of Gucci and Prada.

“I love doing things like that, it’s the theatre,” he beams.

Corin likens the David Mellor shops to theatre, looking beyond the individual products to how everything combines to create an experience, or a ‘show’ if you will.

“I suppose what I’m saying is that it’s not just about the teapot, it’s about the shelf the teapot sits on, it’s about the graphics next to the teapot, it’s about the building… hopefully everything adds up,” he enlightens.

Given his upbringing, it was perhaps inevitable that Corin would follow in his father’s footsteps. After studying product and furniture design in Kingston he worked year before joining the family business.

“I went to the ‘school of dad’ to start with,” he recalls. “I was in the workshop from a very young age making things, I grew up with the tools and the machines. I was never very good at writing, I’m a creator at heart.”

One product that Corin is excited about is a new ice cream bowl, which doesn’t sound like much but is something that has already been a big hit.

“I wanted to do something a little bit unusual,” he explains. “No-one really, apart from Alessi, have done a fun ice cream bowl, they’re all really boring. I know it’s only a tiny little thing but I’m quite excited about them.

“I design things for myself. We design things to be good, we design things to be well made and, style-wise, I suppose I’m

always quite nice when people appreciate what we do.”

As you may expect, Corin is very hands-on but is supported by a dedicated team, many of which have been with the company for decades.

“The whole team here, they’re fantastic people,” beams Corin. “A lot of them are ‘time-served’ but people like it here, we try to create a unique experience. The whole place is focused on design but it’s personal.”

Citing it has one of his biggest challenges, Corin has been very conscious about keeping David Mellor Design small so they can keep control and keep

everything to their standards. He said it would have been ‘easy’ to roll things out but wanted to keep that ‘specialness’.

That being said, David Mellor products remain highly sought-after, whether they are bought in one of their stores or online.

As a destination, the Hathersage location offers a real insight into the world of design – and they serve a pretty good cup of tea

Grand Designs’ Kevin McLeod, who visited recently, described it as his ‘favourite factory in the world’. It’s
