The Europe to get Optomap has transformed the way optometrists can examine patients the health of your eyes in seconds and can help with the early detection, diagnosis and treatment for retinal diseases and conditions including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma. This month, Martin Johnson Opticians welcome a new hospital-grade Zeiss Cirrus 600 Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine, which captures very highresolution imaging of the optic nerve and macula enabling detail of even the retinal microvasculature for more advanced assessments of macula disease and anterior segment. This is also important for glaucoma analysis and monitoring which

the profession is moving towards. A new addition at the practice is a dry eye clinic, which is being led by Louise, and provides thorough assessment and targeted treatment for all forms of dry eye disease, a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide
adequate lubrication for your eyes. BCLA A dry eye assessment includes a detailed discussion about your symptoms and lifestyle, an assessment of your meibomian glands (the oil glands that keep tears

The latest addition to the dry eye clinic " " " "! drainage system with hyaluronic acid gel to help keep the tears on the eye surface for longer. It’s generally for aqueous " ! ! " ! alternative to the more traditional punctal plugs. Further dry eye treatments include ZEST® (Zocular Eyelid System ! " " ! "! treatment designed to improve dry eye symptoms by thoroughly cleaning and soothing the eyelids, whilst NuLids® is a non-invasive treatment designed to improve dry eye symptoms by gently cleaning, exfoliating, and stimulating the eyelids and eyelashes. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT), which works by Photobiomodulation, can treat meibomian gland dysfunction as well as dry eyes. IPL can be used alone or alongside LLLT. "! ! ! " treatment using LLLT of differing wavelengths of light to treat dry macula degeneration. This is groundbreaking technology as currently there are no treatments for dry age-related macula degeneration on the NHS. Myopia, or short sightedness, is a condition that is becoming increasingly common in children and is normally caused by the eye growing longer than average. This means light falls in front of the retina so near objects are clear, but distant objects are blurry. Martin Johnson Opticians has been offering myopia control for several years and have had some fantastic results using the Hoya Myiosmart lens as well as both Misight and NaturalVue contact lenses. These aids are not just about correcting vision but slowing the growth of the eye which in turn reduces risks of retinal thinning/detachment and myopic maculopathy later in life. “We do measure axial length, which
is the gold standard of managing this condition, so that we can measure precisely if the eye is growing too fast,” said Louise. The practice also offers ReadEZ, a new visual colour assessment tool, which can help those with visual stress. Approximately 20 per cent of the " ! "! " discomfort which can often be remedied by using a coloured overlay or wearing coloured glasses. You may have seen their work on Britain’s Got Talent where they recently came second, dazzling Simon Cowell with their incredible drone creations over the Thames. They will be presenting three nights of extraordinary visuals between ( %!,)#(' ( ( ! ) ,)# (%$)(+" )&(! ( which we have never seen before in this part of the country. From Sri Lanka to SHEFFIELD
Siblings Samantha and Sampath Erabadda are bringing a unique coffee experience ri Lanka is one of the world’s foremost tea growers but did you know that, prior to 1869, it was also renowned for its coffee too? Dutch colonisers had experimented with growing coffee on the island nation in the 18th plantations were successfully established under British Colonial rule by George Bird in 1824. By the 1860s, Sri Lanka had become one of the largest coffee-producing countries in the world. But then disaster struck. A fungal disease, known as ‘coffee rust’, decimated plantations but now, over 150 years later, Sri Lankan coffee is making a comeback – and is being brought to the UK Badda Bean Coffee is a family affair, set up by siblings Samantha and Sampath

Erabadda as well as Samantha’s husband, Samual. After years of research and building relationships, the trio now import single-origin Sri Lankan beans in their raw state where they are then roasted and packaged in Manchester. This is very much a passion project for the trio, who all pursue full-time careers. “This is where my heart lies if I’m being honest,” says Samantha. “We all enjoy our day jobs but the level of satisfaction we get it’s linked to our heritage.” Samantha and Sampath have an amazing connection with Sri Lanka and would regularly spend their summers there growing up. “I’ve got loads of memories, running through the jungle, I’m like Mowgli from the sticks in a way,” laughs Samantha. “It’s
a really dense climate, really tropical and is really stunning.” It was the siblings’ father, Eric, who provided the inspiration for their coffee business. “He was drying some green beans on peanuts,” recalls Samantha. “But they were from the coffee tree. My dad is really decided, a few years later, to bring some of these beans back and get them tested.”

FEATURE This journey took them to a local speciality roasters who did just that and was suitably impressed with the quality of the beans. So much so, the trio decided to explore the idea of importing coffee beans further. Eric’s singular tree wouldn’t provide enough for a regular supply so, over almost six years, Samantha and Sampath explored the area further and met a gentleman called Tharanga who was head of a cooperative and worked with lots of local farms. “He’s won awards in Sri Lanka for his coffee and knows the climate, the environment, how to look after the beans also making sure there’s no shortcuts,” explains Samantha. “We just aligned quite nicely.” arrived in the UK, the trio had a sample examined twice by Q graders, then by Blossom Coffee Roasters in Manchester, who specialise in highquality coffees, are carbon neutral and only work with one company in each region. Coffee is scored between 0 and 100 and anything over 80 is classed as a speciality coffee, this means coffee processed to high quality and often done by hand.
