COLUMN ctober is one of our busiest months at Wentworth Woodhouse and we kick off with our premier annual fundraiser The Black Diamonds Ball. The late, and very great, Dame Julie Kenny, founded the event in 2019 and since her untimely passing last year we have dedicated the event to her memory, raising a glass to her whilst also raising as much money as possible on the night to support our work with communities. The Ball is taking place during our ‘Echoes of the House’ season, during which we are animating the State Rooms using immersive digital and interactive will enjoy delicious food, celebratory cocktails, music and dance as well as an exciting cultural offer. during the event and all proceeds go towards the Dame Julie Legacy Fund, every penny donated will continue to carry her vision to make Wentworth a beacon of opportunity and change for the region she loved. People have commented that there doesn’t seem to be much progress with the restoration project on site of late, but the reality is that all big capital works programmes take a long and protracted period of planning. The development phase of any project allows us to carry out detailed condition, bat and asbestos surveys, investigate the impact of any the designs, ensuring we have all the statutory consents in place (not an easy task with a Grade I Listed building). In the New Year two new major projects move into delivery, the full restoration of the chapel and the like for like repair of the West Front roof. Both projects have taken some time to move into delivery, most notably because we have had to raise the £1million-plus ourselves to fund them. As part of the Chapel project, we will be inviting members of the public to get involved with ‘conservation in action’ and they will play an active role in the restoration. It will be wonderful to see scaffolding go up again and the restoration of this incredible site move a few more steps forward. Get ready to don your hard hats!

Young ADVENTURERS

Dungworth Primary School showed plenty of courage recently when they took part in an exciting fundraising abseil from the spectacular Millers Dale Viaduct. The event, organised by the school’s PFA (Parents and Friends Association), brought together pupils, families and members of the school community for a memorable day of adventure, all in support of the school. Working alongside the PFA was Adventure Expeditions, whose experienced team expertly installed two abseiling lines at the viaduct. This allowed the young adventurers and one or two of their family members to take on the challenge of descending around 90 feet from the Monsal Trail, high above the River Wye. For many of the children, stepping over the edge was certainly a moment to remember. With the encouragement

of family, friends and the Adventure Expeditions team, the pupils bravely made their way down the rock face, taking in the impressive surroundings as they descended. The dramatic setting made the experience even more special. High above the River Wye, the viaduct provided a stunning backdrop for what was both a fundraising challenge and a fantastic opportunity for some of the school community to spend time together outdoors. The PFA’s fundraising events play an important part in supporting the school, helping to provide additional opportunities and resources for the children. By taking on such an ambitious challenge, the pupils and their families not only raised valuable funds but also demonstrated the enthusiasm and community spirit that makes school fundraising so rewarding. There were undoubtedly a few nerves

before each descent, but these were soon replaced by smiles and a real sense of achievement as the abseilers reached the bottom. A huge well done to all the pupils and their families who took part, and to the PFA for organising such an adventurous fundraiser. Special thanks also go to Adventure Expeditions for their professional expertise and for making it possible for the children to experience an unforgettable 90-foot descent above the River Wye. It was a day that combined courage, community and fundraising – and one unlikely to forget in a hurry. The PFA are currently raising funds to improve the outdoor play and sports equipment.
