With a new look and new management, The Rivelin Inn offers a warm welcome, homecooked food - and envious views. s far as the views go, the ones from The Rivelin Inn take some beating. The historic pub, which dates back to the mid 19th century, sits part way up a hill on Tofts Lane, Stannington, and affords far-reaching vistas over the Rivelin Valley. It’s a fantastic spot and perhaps no surprise that it’s hugely popular with walkers as well as those from the local area. But, following a recent takeover and refurbishment, it’s also attracting people views, but for the homecooked food too. The Rivelin had been closed from June to November 2025 before reopening under the careful stewardship of Matthew Begley, whom you may recognise from the Walkley Cottage, which Matt ran for over four years. The spacious country pub has been updated inside and out, with a good size dining room, tap room and outside space. It’s the type of place that’s cosy in winter but affords plenty of space in summer months. There’s plenty of parking in a car As part of the relaunch and a new focus

on food, Matt brought in new head chef Mark Gatty who has devised lunch and dinner menus, as well as Sunday lunch, familiarity. For lunch there’s a good choice of sandwiches and sharing plates as well as hearty starters and main courses including pie. All main courses are £9.95 between 12-5pm. Dinner offers some of those familiar favourites but also adds dishes such as ribeye steak (£28), served with cherry tomatoes, mushroom, onion rings and chunky chips; pie of the day (£17.95); lamb shank (£20.95), slow cooked with rosemary mash; and sea bass (£22.95), served with sauteed potatoes and greens. Desserts are all homemade and include options such as crumble of the day (served with warm custard), sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie. There’s been a revamp behind the bar too with new beer ranges, including local

updated wine menu. “The menu is continually evolving but we make as much in-house as possible,” said Matt. “It’s been a fast start but we’re in 2026. It’s a beautiful spot and we have plenty of room.” These plans for 2026 include the introduction of themed nights, which will be mainly food-focused, as well as a weekly quiz night. As Matt did at his previous location, he will be raising money for local charities, such as the S6 Foodbank, through these. Whether you’re looking for a cosy pub meal or somewhere to stop off for a drink after a walk as the weather starts to improve, add the new-look Rivelin to your list. Nastl winemaking has a history from m 1656 and, today, the company very much participates in thhe reductions of interventions, to produce afffordable, outstandingg wines, with quality and attractive presentations. Gravity is uutilised, to a great advantage, in their winemaking process, furtherring reduced interventions. Nestl Muskateller (12.5% vol) is produced w with grapes that have grown on vines which have their vine anceestors dating from ancient times. The vines from this varietal have had a lot of increased plantings in recent years. This whitte wine is very nt of meals. popular for pre-dining and at the commencemen Nastl Riesling (10% vol) is a further, often seelected, white popularity. on the palate, which is offf-dry, attribute to this wine’s w Nastl Zweigelt Rosé (12.5% vol) I found fruiity, with a hint Nastl VelKam rot (12.5% vol), may I suggesst, for a red wine. This dry production balances its fruity overtones throughout, d wine, as a good from the bouquet to the palate. An excellent red ‘all-rounder’ which pairs with casseroles and red meats very well. The Nastl family pride themselves on committment and h standard. The dedication, producing delectable wines to a high traditional Austrian on-site restaurant, plus tastinngs and tours, are further very popular features of the winery.

These precious stones aren’t just limited to a dark red colour but come in a variety of arnet is best known as a dark red gemstone, found in almost every jeweller’s shop window, often in relatively affordable silver or 9ct gold dress jewellery. Red garnets are a mixture of pyrope and almandine, varying in colour from brownish- to orangish-red, and are found abundantly in many areas of the world. In antique jewellery, many of the dark red stones are ‘Bohemian garnet’ sourced from what is now the Czech Republic; this was especially popular in the mid-19th century, items being set with large numbers of the gem to stunning effect. Such pieces can be collectible today. A popular mixture of pyrope and almandine is the purplish-red rhodolite garnet, which has a very attractive, raspberry hue. While small stones are very accessible in

silver jewellery, this variety is particularly sought after in larger sizes and may be seen in more costly pieces of jewellery. Moving into orange and golden hues, oranges are sometimes known as ‘Mandarin garnet’, and are one of the most desirable varieties, particularly in larger sizes and with good clarity. These have increased in price substantially in recent years. Another orange, golden to brown garnet is hessonite, which is a variety of grossular garnet. This can sometimes look very similar to spessartite, but often has a quite distinctive ‘treacly’ internal appearance caused by numerous crystal inclusions, and consequently reduced transparency. The most popular variety of grossular garnet is Tsavorite, a bright green stone found around the Kenya-Tanzania border.

Tsavorite receives its colour from traces of chromium and vanadium, the same elements that give emerald its characteristic bright green hue, and its intense colour is very similar. of which can be amongst the most valuable garnets. Originally discovered in Russia in the 19th century, and named for their diamond-like appearance, their green hue is often more muted than Tsavorite, rather stones may approach the intensity of the other variety. Most demantoids are now sourced from Namibia, although the colour is typically lighter than the classic Russian material that is seen in antique pieces.
