Myths and MEETINGS
Two contrasting new exhibitions at Cupola Gallery offer two very different experiences.
ebruary sees two new exhibitions take pride of place at Hillsborough’s Cupola Gallery. In Her Nature is an exciting new exhibition by Lyn Hodnett, bringing together a engagement with myth, folklore, identity, and the natural world.
A British painter and printmaker based practice has long been rooted in evocative often depicted through richly symbolic imagery drawn from birds, animals and plants. Her use of diverse materials, including masks, collage, fragmentation and resconstruction, enhance a dynamic, narrative-driven approach that blends vibrant colour, humour and depth, inviting viewers into a world where the human and

Repetition is a recurring element in
the artists’ work. The Tablet series, 25 small square paintings has become an ever-expanding vocabulary which tries encounters through mark, colour, form and pattern.
Both exhibitions run from 14 February to 14 March.

Make it PERSONAL
Make your wedding extra-special by personalising your rings. PA Jewellery offer multiple ways in which you can do this.
Your wedding rings are an important part of your big day and will remain with you throughout your marriage as a symbol of the love you share and the promises you have made to each other.
Increasingly couples wish to make their wedding rings extra special by adding personal touches and we have a variety of ways to help you make your rings as individual as your relationship.
We are regularly asked if we can make wedding bands out of customer’s gold or platinum. The answer is yes! Supplying metal for your rings can allow you to transfer the sentimental value of family heirlooms; many customers will use pieces of jewellery, perhaps even wedding rings, left to them by family members, giving the new rings a rich, unique and personal history.
As an extra local detail, the rings will

if you don’t want any gold on show we can use your metal as the core band with a solid white metal overlay. When the ring is being worn the gold cannot be seen but if you take the ring off you can see the extra special core beneath.

We started 2026 with a focus on weddings. Did you recognise any of the brides or grooms, or any other members of the wedding party for that matter?
The main picture showed the wedding of Sam Ashworth and Elsie Matthews. The splendid wedding party was taken by local photographer Arnie Greaves in 1910 and was printed from a glass negative. Elsie’s parents, seen sitting on either side of the bride and groom, kept the Crown & Cushion Inn in Burncross, where this photograph was taken.
The smaller image was the wedding of William Blazey and Minnie Jepson in 1924. A noticeable change has occurred in the bride’s headgear. Gone are the large hats traditionally worn. Styles had changed between the late Edwardian period and the roaring twenties. And Jessie Jepson, sitting beside the bride,

Life is good for Shaun Ryder right now. Well, almost. As I speak to him he’s fresh from touring with symptoms.
“I’m Codeined up to the max and am feeling a bit s***,” he says in his familiar Salford twang.
But that aside, he’s thoroughly enjoyed being back on tour with Kermit and the boys but is gearing up for something even bigger in 2026.
Starting 13 March, the Happy Mondays
mark the 35th anniversary of Pills ‘n’ Thrills And Bellyaches, the classic album period of the late 1980s/1990s.
and co collaborate with Steve Osborne and DJ Paul Oakenfold and spawn hits such as Kinky Afro, Loose Fit and Step On.
Asked whether it was inspired by Manchester and the scene at the time
Carpets and 808 State were already in full notion.
“It was more through what was going on places like Ibiza and us going down to London at weekends where Oakey was DJing. We’d always took our music from everywhere, it was Bob Dylan and Public Enemy or Sweet and Showaddywaddy or Northern Soul.
drug that came along for us at the time. That was our special time, it was my generation’s 1967/68 and everything started growing your hair and getting all
The Happy Mondays were signed to Factory Records and Shaun has fond
“We were at a Buzzcocks gig in Belle Vue, which must have been the late seventies,” says Shaun. “I had a plastic pint of lager in my hand and I threw it at him to get his attention. We wanted Factory because we admired Tony and the bands on it. He was the dude.”
In total the Happy Mondays released while the focus on this tour will be very on Pills ‘n’ Thrills And Bellyaches, the band pleasers too.
“What we do now, it’s sort of what we call a greatest hits set if you can call it that, we didn’t really have any great hits!”
and G Man, we always do one or two from Bummed, because we always do Wrote For
“We do change it around every now and then, I let Dan, our musical director, choose the set so it surprises me sometimes. We’ve got so much to choose from.”
Shaun was just 18 when the Happy Mondays started, now 63, touring with the band is now a different experience but is one he wouldn’t change.
“I enjoy it more than ever now,” he says. “The sex and drugs have gone and we’re
me. If we were still running around like right, would it?”
Shaun is still buzzing from the Black Grape tour, so how easy is it to slip between the two bands?
“It’s actually three,” Shaun reminds me. “I’ve got Mantra of the Cosmos as well, with Zak Starkey and Andy Bell. But Black Grape has always been easier than the Mondays because it’s just me and Kermit, in the Mondays you’ve got a group of people who all have a say.
“But it’s great to have them all going, it feels as exciting now as it was at the beginning. And it keeps me out of the house!”
If you think Happy Mondays fans are limited to those of a certain age, you’d be wrong. Bez’s appearance on Big Brother
stint in the jungle in 2010 opened up the band to a whole new audience.
“Our fanbase now goes from eight to 80,” says Shaun.
Supporting the Happy Mondays on this tour are The Farm and Northside, both of whom supported the band at their legendary 1991 concert at Elland Road, Leeds.
The tour promises to be one for the ages and, regardless of age, will leave you stepping on well into the night.

Aidan Edmanson Westbourne School
Mr Edmanson has been the Headteacher at Westbourne School since September 2024, following 12 years of leadership in the international education sector, across a variety of schools and countries.
“Even in a relatively short time, I well and truly feel part of the Westbourne family; it is certainly a school where all members of our community can feel that they truly belong,” he said. “Likewise, I am very proud of what we have achieved, and what we continue to achieve, as a community, whether observing our GCSE results, our individual pupil achievements or the impact of our unrivalled pastoral care and individualised provision for our children.”
Westbourne is a through-school supporting pupils to learn and thrive from the ages of four to 16, however, is excited to share plans to open Westbourne Sixth Form in September 2027, extending a commitment to educational excellence and maintaining unrivalled small class sizes for
pupils up to the age of 18.
Every day is different for Mr Edmanson and what he loves most about the school
within their community, and shine.
“We are a school who relentlessly pursue a values-based approach to education, who pride themselves on inclusivity and an appreciation of diversity, and who truly appreciate the role of nurturing relationships, kindness and respect,” he added. “Importantly, we also appreciate how a happy child, who feels a sense of true belonging, will succeed, and we see this sentiment lived by our children through their numerous successes.”
Westbourne is a school which is busy and forward-thinking. A recent development is their very own Teaching and Learning Philosophy, built around the core tenant of ‘We Know Our Pupils’.
