PeoplestartedtointeractwithTheBrick Roomafterafewweeks.Inoticedbits movingandoneweeksomeonelefta dollinit.Iwassoexcitedthatpeople hadseenitthatIdecidedtosetupan Instagrampageforit.Ileftalittlenote withtheprofilehandleinthenextscene andsuddenlyIwasreceivingloadsof messagesfrompeoplesayingthey’dseen itandlovedit.

Unfortunatelyinthesummer,the scenesstartedgettingvandalised.Itwasn’t majoratfirstandIturneditintoabitof ajoke-fightingbackwitha‘vandalsin jail’scene.However,astimewentonthe sceneswereonlylastingadayortwo beforetheyweregettingcompletely destroyedandtrampledon.Itriedto combatitbyinstallingaperspexscreen butitjustcreatedachallengeforthe

twasbackinthe1960sthat DerbyshireGPEricWilkes embarkedonamissiontobring specialistendoflifecaretoSheffield.

Atthattime,theideaofhospicecare wasanewconcepttomostpeopleand onethatnoteverybodythoughtwas evennecessary.

ButDrWilkeswasnoteasily dissuadedandthroughhisvisionand passion,thepublicofSheffield–volunteers,supporters,professionalsand businesses–joinedtogethertocreatea pioneeringorganisationthathastouched thelivesofthousandsofSheffield familieseversince.

InOctober1971StLuke’sHospice, thefirstfacilityofitskindoutsideof London,openeditsdoorstothe terminallyillpeopleofSheffield.

Fromitsearlieststages,StLuke’sset thepatternforhospicecare,creatinga

modelthatnowseesmorethan200 independenthospicesaroundtheUK andthousandsmoreworldwide.

Today,morethanhalfacenturylater, itishardtoimagineSheffieldwithout oneofitsbestlovedandmostenduring charities,importanttothepeoplewho seeksitscareandatanationallevelasa leaderinpioneeringpalliativecare.

Inthattime,StLuke’shassupported morethan40,000patientsandtheir families.

StLuke’snotonlyprovidessupportfor manypeoplewithterminalcancerbut alsocaresforpeoplewithotherillnesses includingneurologicalconditionssuchas motorneuronedisease,HIVandend stageheart,lungandkidneyconditions.

TheInPatientCentreatLittle CommonLaneprovides24-hour specialistpalliativecareforaround300 patientseachyear,around5,000daysand

nightsofcare,roundtheclocksupport thatistailoredforeachpatient.

TheStLuke’smultidisciplinaryteam ofexperiencedspecialistdoctors,nurses, occupationalandphysiotherapists specialiseinsymptomandpain managementandtheircombinedsupport oftenallowslovedonesthetimetostep backfromacarer’sroleandspend precioustimetogether.

Around15percentofpatientsare caredforontheStLuke’sInPatient Centrebutthemajority-around85per cent-aresupportedintheirownhomes bytheStLuke’sSpecialistPalliativeCare CommunityTeam.

During2021-22theteammade6,289 in-personhomevisitstopatientsacross Sheffieldand11,838phoneandvideo callstosupportthemintheircare.

Theteam’smainaimistosupport patientsthroughouttheirillnesssothat

theyhavethebestpossiblequalityoflife andrelieffromsymptoms,oftenhelping toavoidhospitaladmissions.

Theyalsosupportpatientstohave flexiblechoicesaboutwheretheyare lookedafter,includingenablingsometo dieathome,ifthatistheirpreference.

Workingtogetherwithdistrictnurses, GPs,socialworkersandother professionalsandspecialists,theteam deliver‘wraparoundcare’topatientsand oftentotheirfamiliestoo.

SpecialistPalliativeCareCommunity TeamleaderDavidJonesexplains: “Beingathomemakessuchadifference tothepatient,especiallyneartheend, whentheymightbedriftinginandout ofconsciousness.

“Thesoundsandsmellsofafamiliar placehelpkeepthemcalmandbeingat homegivespeopletimetoadjust,to makememories.

“Wereallywantthemtofeelreassured andsupported,sotheycanmakethe mostofthetimetheyhave.”

StLuke’sisnotsimplyaboutthe patients,though,andatthecharity’s neighbouringEcclesallRoadSouthsite, PatientandFamilySupportServices offerarangeoffacilitiesforanyone affectedbyaterminalillnessatanystage oftheirjourney-andfortheirloved onestoo.

AtEcclesallRoadSouth,careand supportistailoredtoeachpatientand theStLuke’steamsworktogetherto helpeverybodyachievetheirgoalsand wishes.

Thismightmeanenablingthemtolive independentlyaslongaspossibleor helpingthemtoachievepersonalgoals, bigorsmall,likemarryingtheirloved oneorfeelingstrongenoughtoclimb thestairs.

Aswellasexpertmedicalcareand support,StLuke’salsodeliversthenonclinicalaspectsofitscarethathelps patientsmanagetheirsymptoms.

Patientscanaccessphysioand occupationaltherapy,wellbeingand creativetherapies,socialworkand chaplaincyorspiritualsupportforall faithsandnone.

Thisincludesrelaxationandwellbeing techniques,tipsonnutrition,routineand sleepaswellasfunactivitiesforall interests.

Formanypeopleitisoftenthese aspectsofcarethatpeoplefirst encounterwithStLuke’s,atwhatcanbe adauntingtime.

Therapysessions,craftorexercise workshopsmeanthatStLuke’sisnota

placetofear–itisaplaceforcare, compassionandcalmnesswherepeople canconnectwithstaff,specialistsand otherpatients.

Familiesandfriendsplayavaluable roleinapatient’scaresoStLuke’salso providededicatedsupportforlovedones toothroughsocial,spiritualand bereavementsupport.

During2021-22,theBereavement teamsupported570familyandfriends dealingwiththelossofalovedone, providingnearly2,800sessionsof counsellingandsupport.

Onawiderplatform,StLuke’sis proudtobepartofProjectECHO,a nationalprojectsharingexpertiseacross healthcareprofessions,trainingand supportingotherprofessionalsintheir setting,whetherthat’sanotherhospice,a carehomeorhospital.

StLuke’sworkedwithYorkshire AmbulanceServicetodeliverthefirst ECHOprogrammeintheworldtohelp paramedicswithendoflifecareskills andECHOisprovingtobeareally powerfultoolandonethatinjustone

yeardeliveredmorethan160sessionsto almost5,000attendees.

ECHOnowsupportscarehomes, nursinghomes,residentialhomes, primarycareteamsandtheYorkshire AmbulanceServicetoprovideasafeand supportiveenvironmentforhealthcare professionalsthatarelookingaftersome ofthemostvulnerablepeopleinthe widercommunity.

Allthis,ofcourse,comesatacostcurrentlyrunningat£10millionperyear, ofwhichjust30percentiscoveredby theNHS.

Thatmeansthatthethepeopleof Sheffield-bothindividualsand businesses-havetohelpinthe mammothtaskofraising£7million everyyear.

Somewilldothatthroughvisitingthe award-winningchainof13StLuke’s shopsacrossthecity,whicharenow raisinganextraordinary£60,000per week.
