Let’s be honest, we all overindulge over the festive season. It’s hard not to. There’s so much food, drinks, parties, gatherings… how can you say no?

But Christmas is not all about big heavy meals, sometimes those smaller bites, and smaller plates, can go a long way.

With this in mind, we have spoken to a trio of local pubs, restaurants and cooks seeking inspiration for smaller, buffet-style dishes that can be easily enjoyed at home.

Husband and wife duo Jack and Lucy Fitzgerald will be welcoming guests to the The Wheatsheaf Pub and Pantry, Bakewell over the Christmas period and as well as serving a full festive menu were happy to share some ideas for something smaller –and made for sharing.

Their Winter Warmer Board, with a baked Camembert at its centre, brings everything you love about this season to the table and is easy to prepare in advance.

“It’s a dish that invites conversation and slows the pace,” said head chef Jack. “Whether a starter to share, a light bite with a bottle of wine, it’s designed to bring people together, the heart of what The Wheatsheaf is all about.”

Lucy recommends a Chardonnay to complement the sharing platter or even a mulled wine as the spices and warmth from food feel.

“The buttery texture of lightly oaked Chardonnay complements the melted cheese and soft bread beautifully.”

The Psalter Hotel & Restaurant have gone full-on festive with a turkey-based cranberry and chestnut. The dish celebrates the warmth of winter with crisp, spiced fried turkey, a tangy-sweet cranberry ketchup, and a delicate topping of shaved chestnuts. A two-hour brine ensures succulence, while the gluten-free dredge brings a light, golden crunch touched with aromatic spice.

This dish embodies The Psalter’s festive

yet bright. The aromatic dredge, sweetsharp cranberry ketchup, and chestnut garnish together create a harmony of texture

unmistakably seasonal.

Leslie Buddington is the chef-owner of Six and a half and has created a beef cheek and a more elegant twist on a beef suet pie.

“The addition of cinnamon and star anise really lifts the dish and gives it a comforting festive feel,” said Leslie, who would recommend a full-bodied glass of red wine to go with the dish.

The roly poly can prepare this dish in advance and then reheat.

3. Blend until smooth and pass through a balance of sweetness and acidity to taste.

To Serve:

1. Arrange the fried turkey on warm plates and spoon over the cranberry ketchup.

2. Finish with freshly shaved roasted chestnuts for a touch of luxury and a soft,

Slaters Digital Installations runs alongside the TV and aerial business and provides services for the installation of CCTV systems, wireless alarms and more.

Like any good business, Slaters has continued to evolve and now offers much more than TV and aerial installations.

Slaters Digital Installations launched in 2010 to run alongside the existing aerial business, which was established 50 years ago, providing services for the installation of CCTV systems, wireless alarms and doorbell and access control systems. They can also improve internet access throughout the home, either through hardwired or wireless connections.

The family-run business is run by husband-and-wife team, Simon and Marie Slater, alongside Simon’s brother Martin but it’s Simon’s son, Thomas – the third generation Slater - who has really driven this new side of the business.

In today’s world, security is paramount and one of the most effective ways to protect your property is through the installation of CCTV cameras. Slaters work with the leading brands Hickvision and S Pro, renowned for their advanced technology and reliable performance. These top-tier security systems ensure your property remains safeguarded against potential threats.

Wireless alarm systems, like those from Ajax, have also revolutionised the security industry with their ease of installation and advanced features. These systems are equipped with various components such as motion detectors, door and window sensors, sirens, and control panels.

Video doorbells and access systems, from brands such as Ring, Tapo and Nest, can give you extra piece of mind and enhance your overall security.

Good Wi-Fi has become a necessity and Slaters are very busy installing internet and ethernet connections in homes around the region. There has been a growth in Cat 5/6 cabling, which can be used on a domestic level for computer networking, smart televisions and internet connections.

For those struggling with internet speed or connection, Starlink has become a popular option and can be installed by Simon and his team. Derived from Elon Musk’s Space

hard-to-reach places.

TV and aerials remain very much part of Slaters’ services and they can undertake everything from a single Freeview aerial or satellite installation to cinema screens or wall-mounted systems.

All Freeview/HD/DAB systems are fully digital compatible and will work with all of your digital equipment.

“Over the last 20 years we have installed cable networks, internet systems, in-home CCTV and in-home alarm systems on a commercial scale, but now with ever improving technology and prices, all of these services are offered on a domestic level,” said Simon Slater. “And with the TV industry and internet-based technologies moving ever closer, you can be assured we are at the forefront of all new technologies.”

WISHING ALL OUR CUSTOMERS OLD & NEW HAPPY CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR

Forget about the HANGOVER

Travelling is a given for many of us this festive period, whether you’re visiting family, friends or just looking to get away and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Christmas, and the run up to it, is a time alcoholic variety. And whether you’re the designated driver or someone who doesn’t like or partake in alcoholic drinks, this doesn’t mean you’re solely limited to soft ones.

Wines in particular have come on leaps and whites to pinks and sparkling.

some unfermented grape sugars remain. Modern producers use sophisticated acidity.

alcoholic wines are often lower in calories; for example, a 150ml glass can contain as few as 15-50 calories, compared to over 100 in traditional wine. And the primary advantage is that it completely reduces Christmas parties stack up one after the other.

With this increase in non-alcoholic wines, we thought we’d put them to the test and so approached several leading supermarkets as well as some local suppliers for some samples. We sourced sparkling, with prices ranging from £2.99 to £14.
