Barnsley Sixth Form College celebrates 99 per cent pass rate
Barnsley Sixth Form College is celebrating another excellent set of A Level results. The overall pass rate at the Sixth Form College is 99 per cent, with 100 per cent pass rates in 24 out of 27 subjects, including English, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Sociology and Psychology. Nine out of ten students achieved three or more A Level passes with a continuing increase in high grades. Their students are now looking forward to starting at universities throughout the country, including Cambridge, York, Newcastle, Lancaster, Lincoln and Glasgow. BUMFORDS SUCCESSFULLY TACKLE THREE YORKSHIRE PEAKS The nine-strong team from Bumfords Heating in Barnsley successfully completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge on 3 September. Despite the horrendous conditions, which included driving rain, mist and hail, the team walked the 24-mile route in the Yorkshire Dales in just over 11 hours. Managing director Neil Bumford said: “It was a very hard walk in some very challenging conditions. We all have stiff knees and blisters, but we are happy to have raised a lot of money for the Children’s Hospital Charity. We are all really proud of our achievements.” The Bumfords team have raised over £1,100 for the Children’s Hospital Charity, more than double their original target. Originally a short performance created for Yorkshire Festival, The Civic have commissioned a full-length production of STEAM, a parkour-performance suitable for the whole family. The story starts when a group of urban explorers discover the skeletal remains of a steam locomotive. Inspired, they take a journey through the silent movies of Buster Keaton, the train hijackings of the Wild West, the rooftop stunts of James Bond, the heartbreak of the First World War, and the dark future of inner city commuting. The Urban Playground Team are the original performance-parkour company, combining dance, physical-theatre, slapstick and authentic French free-running in their shows, which has earnt them international recognition. Ex-player gets in touch READER ROY NORCLIFFE RECALLS HIS TIME AS PART OF THE ECCLESFIELD PRIORY PLAYERS THEATRE GROUP. ou may remember our feature on the EPPiC (Ecclesfield Priory Players in the Community) Theatre and the origins of Ecclesfield Priory Players in our July issue. On reading the feature, former secretary and actor of the Priory Players, Roy Norcliffe, got in touch to recount his own memories of the theatre group. The Ecclesfield Priory Players have been an established part of the community for many years, having first formed in 1932. Roy remembers the day he was asked to join the group in 1952. “Shortly before leaving school, there was a knock on the door at my home on The Common, Ecclesfield and two of the more renowned Players were ‘looking for a word’,” He explains. “My Mum had always taken me to the Gatty Hall to watch the players’ productions there so for Harold Jones and Jenny Johnson to be seeking me out was quite an honour. “They said that they’d seen me on stage in the Wesleyan Chapel’s knockabouts and heard about my school acting – at Barnsley Tech mind you – and would I be prepared to join the Players. Would I mind? I jumped at the chance to mix in such exalted company.”

Roy established himself as an actor over the following 15 years and juggled his secretary role with a few other jobs during the 1960s including a job as a metallurgist and a parttime drama tutor for the old West Riding County Council. The theatre group faced extinction in the mid-1950s and moved from Gatty Hall to Colley Road School early in the 1960s, but they soon returned to the area, this time at Ecclesfield Modern School, where Roy’s wife June was once a pupil. Louise is APPI registered and has undertaken postgraduate training to offer these sessions, as well as offering seven years of physiotherapy experience. team of 100 people are planning to follow in the footsteps of these men to support the soldiers and veterans of today. Steven Milne from Chapeltown is one of the people taking part in this emotionally and physically-demanding event. From 5 to 9 October, Steven will be embarking on the

100km Frontline Walk across various battlefields in northern France to raise money for ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity (formerly the Army Benevolent Fund). Starting at Lochnagar Crater, Steven and the team will march 37km to the outskirts of Arras passing Thiepval and the memorial to the Sheffield and Barnsley Pals Battalion on the Somme. Steven, who served in the Territorial Army for over 20 years, has always been fascinated with First World War and when he saw a post about the walk on his Facebook news feed a year ago, he couldn’t resist getting involved. The Soldiers’ Charity give a lifetime of support to soldiers and veterans from the British Army, and their immediate families, when they are in need. They make grants to individuals through their Regiments and Corps and support a wide range of specialist charities that sustain the British Army ‘family’, both at home and around the world, such as the SSAFA and Combat Stress. “There was a guy who got took hostage about five years ago in Yemen,” says Steven. “He was the main bread-winner and his family couldn’t pay the mortgage, so The Soldiers’ Charity stepped in and paid it. So they cover everything – it’s a really good charity.” This is the third year the Frontline Walk

will take place and it is Steven’s second walk. The top three fundraisers will have the opportunity to lay a wreath at the Menin Gate – the last post on the 100km walk and a once in a life time chance to take part in the emotional final salute to the fallen. Having raised £3,120, Steven was the top fundraiser last year and laid wreaths at both the Menin Gate and the Sheffield Pals memorial – an experience which has stayed with Steven ever since. “Laying the wreath at Sheffield Park for Sheffield Pals was a particularly poignant moment for me. The Sheffield Pals were from all over the city including Chapeltown and they were all completely annihilated.” This year, as well as paying his respects to the Barnsley and Sheffield Pals, Steven plans to lay a card on the grave of one particular soldier. “Whilst I was at the 100th anniversary event at the Somme on 1 July, there were men dressed in the First World War soldier’s uniforms handing out cards in Sheffield for a campaign called We Are Here.” Steven’s girlfriend was handed a card which said, ‘Lance Corporal Noel Wilcox’s, 12th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. Died at the Somme on 1 July 1916, aged 23 years.’ “Coincidently, I’d already seen his grave and I knew exactly where it was, so I’m

going to leave that card at his grave. I looked into it, found the house he used to live in and found out he was an only child.” One of Steven’s ancestors also fought in the First World War. Robert Drummond was only 17 years old when he joined the army as a sniper. Thankfully, he lived to tell the tale. Steven is also tracing William Johnston Milne, who he believes to be a distant relative. William moved to Canada at the age of ten, so enlisted with a Canadian battalion. Sadly, he lost his life at Vimy Ridge on 9 April 1917. His brave actions that day meant he was awarded the Victoria Cross – the highest award of the United Kingdom honours system. He has no known grave, but his name will be forever etched on the Vimy Ridge memorial. Steven has been steadily building his strength over the past four months in preparation for the walk, but is also aware of how challenging it can be – both physically and emotionally. @PulseRMC
“It’s one of the hardest things I’ve done, but it’s like nothing else – very special,” he says. “So far this year, I’ve raised around £800. The local community have been amazing – last year and this year, so I want to thank them for their support.” The stories behind the soldiers who bravely gave their lives on these battlefields go on and on. Steven is asking locals to come forward to tell him about any ancestors they have lost in the First World War. To celebrate the production life of the F10 generation M5, BMW has created what could be the last M5 powered by the 4.4-litre V8 engine. Named the Competition Edition, there’ll be a limited run of just 200 cars with a price tag of £100,995. That may seem quite a steep price for what’s essentially a family saloon, but you get pretty much everything thrown into the mix options-wise, including the M Competition Package which makes the car an altogether much more sporting proposition. Maximum power has been raised to 600hp from 560hp with a torque figure of 516lb ft. Other differentiators include carbon fibre exterior parts, jet black alloy wheels and kidney grill, and full black merino leather upholstery with unique ‘1/200’ engraving.
MAKEOVER MARKS ANNIVERSARY To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep has created a – you’ve guessed it – a 75th Anniversary limited edition Wrangler. Based on the Overland Wrangler, it comes with unique exterior and interior cues to differentiate it from the rest of the range. Exterior features include a bronze-finished front grille and 18-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured dual top, Mopar slush mats, unique bronze and orange Jeep badging, and a dedicated 75th anniversary badge. May the fourth be with you… This fourth generation of the Clio, first introduced into the market back in 2012, is most certainly one of the best looking cars in the supermini segment. Its swooping curves and charming looks make it undeniably French. Now, Renault has decided to give the Clio a mid-life refresh with a subtle exterior face-lift with redesigned bumpers and a new full LED front light signature, as well as upgrading the Clio’s interior with better quality materials, all with the aim of making it a much more grown-up proposition. There’s a new 1.5-litre dCi diesel engine, which produces 110hp and 192lb ft of torque, mated to a six speed manual gearbox, and the TCe 120 petrol engine is also now available with a six speed manual.

ric Stead – the MG specialist on The Common in Ecclesfield – may be one of the longest-running motor dealers in the area, having been established in 1962, but its vehicle portfolio is anything but old-fashioned. The MG GS has just landed and they’re so pleased with this all-new SUV, they invited me along to take the Exclusive model for a spin. On arrival at Eric Stead, I was greeted by Trevor Stead, the son of the dealer’s original owner, who now runs the business with his brother Ian. The MG was ready and raring to go on the forecourt and, as Trevor led me outside to become acquainted with my wheels for the day, the first thing that struck me was its sporty-but-accessible appearance. It was sleek and stylish enough for me to feel like I was in for a real treat, without worrying about driving about in a too-flashy motor all day. It is said to be inspired by the diversity of a modern family and I can really appreciate how they’ve fulfilled that brief. After driving up to Grenoside Woods for a quick photoshoot, I hopped in the back to see how the kids would find the whole experience and was bowled over by how spacious and comfortable it was. Miles of leg room and enveloping seats would make long car journeys a dream.

Back in the front, I turned left out of the Greno Woods car park and took the winding route up Woodhead Road towards Wortley, heading for the motorway where I could really put its speedy prowess to the test. It handled corners beautifully on the way and, when we hit the motorway, I relished the chance to put my foot down and enjoy the (very smooth) ride. Having passed with flying colours at higher speeds, it was time to see how it handled smaller spaces and narrow city streets. Heading into Sheffield city centre, I was surprised at how agile it was around tight bends and I never felt like it was too big to handle. Reversing is a breeze, too. With a camera guiding from behind, pointing me in exactly the right direction, I was perfectly confident squeezing it into a gap between two cars. When I reluctantly returned my new favourite car to Trevor later that day, I asked him what made it so special. “The price and the warranty make it extremely good value for money,” he enthused. “Prices for the standard model start at just £14,995 and the five-year warranty is a real added bonus. appointments are booking up fast. Heading back out of the showroom to my own car, I caught sight of something rather special – a pristine 1979 MGB GT. “It has never been registered and only has 67 miles on the clock,” said Trevor. “Someone would have to offer me an awful lot of money to part with it.” For all the modern wonders that vehicles like the MG GS can provide, it’s clear that, at the heart of it all, it’s the earnest, life-long passion for cars that has fuelled customer trust and loyalty in Eric Stead for more than 50 years.
