Silver Spectacular A GLITTERING EXHIBITION AT TEMPLE NEWSAM SHOWCASING HISTORIC AND CONTEMPORARY SILVER PIECES DESERVES A CLOSER INSPECTION… r Rachel Conroy has recently taken

the role of decorative arts curator D on at Temple Newsam, Leeds and has put together her first exhibition - Silver Showstoppers - which is proving popular with visitors. With previous experience at the National Museum of Art in Cardiff working with decorative art collections, and metal work collections in Sheffield, it seems fitting that her first venture would focus on historic silver centrepieces. “I enjoy contemporary craft and have spent a lot of my career working in that area. I wanted to juxtapose two incredible 18th century pieces with two impressive contemporary ones and see what conversation would arise between them,” says Rachel. “The interpretation of the exhibition was always going to be something very different to that of Temple Newsam itself - most of Silver Showstoppers is interpreted through film.” The exhibition is set in one of the historic bedrooms and has been blacked out, creating a dramatic light to showcase the textures and colours of the silver centrepieces. “We did a project with Digifish who produced digital labels for each of the four objects.” “I was interested in getting the point of view of the artists across not only for the objects they created, but the historic ones too. kind enough to be filmed responding to the 18th century pieces,” added Rachel. Rachel wanted to be able to delve more deeply into the processes and techniques used in all four pieces, along with emphasising the incredible amount of work each artist has put into their centrepiece. The exhibition features two historic pieces. One called an epergne by Thomas Pitts (1759), the other The Kirkleatham Centrepiece by brother and sister, David Willaume II and Anne Tanqueray (1731-2). “The Kirkleatham Centrepiece is the one of the earliest surviving centre pieces of its type. It’s completely adjustable so you can, for

example, take the candle branches off and replace them with oil cruets. The epergne is unusual as its design was influenced by Chinese pagodas.” The contemporary pieces are Deluge Dish by Miriam Hanid (2009) and Uncontrollable Beauty; Lichen Cloud by Junko Mori (2012). “Both of these artists take their inspiration from the natural world - from organic growth and the water. Junko Mori set herself one challenge which was to create a large sculpture but it needed to be light enough to lift with one hand.” Silver Showstoppers not only includes video labels, but an immersive film and soundtrack are played on a continual loop. It is a social exhibition and based around a table, meaning visitors can enjoy the work together and look closely at each individual object. “I hope this exhibition offers visitors a chance to something different. I want them to come, see four beautiful large scale pieces and feel excited by them. So far people are really enjoying seeing something visually different and enjoying the filmed interpretation.” As part of the exhibition, there will be a talk on 16 September on the work of Junko Mori and one on 14 October looking at the designer and collector, Rosalinde Gilbert. Top Cash Tribute Show HANNAH SANDERS TALKS TO THE MAN BEHIND THE JOHNNY CASH STAGE SHOW ore than just a show, the Johnny

Roadshow is a heart-warming M Cash story played out with passion, and is a wonderful celebration of one of the world’s greatest artists - Johnny Cash. Clive John, an accomplished singer/ songwriter plays the lead role of the man in black in the critically acclaimed theatre production. The show is currently touring the UK and on 7 September at O2 Academy, Leeds, Clive and his group of talented musicians will be putting on a real treat for country music lovers and Cash fans. Here’s Clive discussing how it feels to play the legendary Johnny Cash, his passion for music and what to expect from the show. How did your career in music start?

When I was about two, I suffered severe burns to my hands. When I was five, and my hand were large enough the surgeons recommended to my parents that I learn to play the piano. From that I learnt the guitar, and by the time I was 13 I was on grade seven on both the guitar and classical piano. I began song writing and have released eight albums of my own material, and am currently about to start work on my ninth.

My first Johnny Cash rendition was in 2015 and it has just completely taken over now. What does the roadshow entail?

It’s a concert crossed with a production rather than a tribute band. It’s different to how Cash would play - more a modern rock version but at the same time we keep it authentic. The gig is a rollercoaster of emotion, with over 40 songs starting from the 50s right through to the end of Cash’s career. The show has video footage for each song with images of Johnny or June Carter and there’s always something to look at with lots of live activity on stage. How does it feel to be playing the man in black and what’s your favourite song to play?

It’s an experience for sure. I sometimes can’t help but wonder what he would feel about it. I do think if he was alive and saw the show he would love it. It’s hard to choose as I love all the songs but maybe Sunday Morning Coming Down, Highwayman or A Thing Called Love. What’s one of your most memorable performances?

I have loved so many of our shows, but we did one on top of a mountain just outside of

Verona, Italy and it was something special. There was around 4,000 people and everyone was just loving it. On the front row there was a woman who was crying with the emotion of it all, and when you can have that kind of effect on somebody through your singing it is incredible. Have you ever met any of Johnny Cash’s family?

I met his granddaughter and she was over the moon with the show. She came to a show and the manager came down saying there was a lady with a deep southern American accent saying she is Cash’s granddaughter and could she have some tickets. I thought someone was pulling my leg! What should people look out for in the show?

We do a section with a song by The Statler Brothers who were a backing band for Johnny Cash for years, it is a really unique and special part of the show. a £1million Inheritance B promised Tax allowance and in April 2017 this began to come into effect. The £1million allowance will only apply to married couples and civil partners; those who are single or divorced will be limited to £500,000. Being gradually phased in, it will be 2020 before the new tax giveaway reaches the £1million mark but it is hedged with some complex conditions. This will mean a rethink on forward financial planning for anyone concerned to minimise the impact of this most dreaded of taxes. Inheritance Tax was previously 40 per cent on estates over the basic tax-free allowance of £325,000. Married couples and civil partners could pass any unused allowance to each other after a death. For the 2017/2018 tax year the limit rose to £425,000, with the intention of climbing in increments of £25,000 to reach £500,000 in by the 2020/2021 tax year. A couple with a £1 million family home will then be able to pass it on free of tax, but those with other valuable assets may not qualify. In calculating whether the new allowance, known as the ‘Residence Nil Rate Band’ (RNRB), can be added to the existing and automatic ‘Nil Rate Band’ (NRB), the whole estate is valued. If it is over £2million, the RNRB is reduced by £1 for every £2 excess, so that estates worth more than £2.35million get no RNRB. For anyone needing to sell their property to ‘downsize’, but who might be deterred by potentially losing the new enhanced tax relief, special rules can preserve RNRB but are highly complex. 30 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

The new tax regime brings new opportunities. An estate must include a home that the deceased has lived in, but this does not have to be the main family home and if there is more than one property in the estate, a family can nominate one for the relief. That home must be ‘closely inherited’ – left to a direct or lineal descendant – which includes family members and their spouses, stepchildren, adopted or foster children and grandchildren. Any RNRB that is not used on a first death in a couple can be transferred to a surviving spouse or civil partner. Furthermore, assets and property left in trust will qualify if the only beneficiaries are direct descendants who will have at least a life interest. However, there are pitfalls. Transferring an unused RNRB between spouses will not help if the survivor’s estate becomes too valuable to qualify. Unmarried couples might assume that each other’s children would meet the requirements, but they will not be considered stepchildren of each other and there will be no RNRB. Nor do gifts between an unmarried couple themselves get the new relief. Gillian Coverley, Partner in the Tax Trust and Estates team at Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth, says that there are two significant elements to the new regime: one on the drafting of wills, particularly in relation to trusts, and the other in estate planning as well as the use of assets. “For a husband and wife, there are the options of leaving outright or leaving in trust; it’s about how the trust is worded when the second person dies. We want to encourage

people to take stock of whether their will meets today’s requirements. It is a big change and one has to jump through hoops to meet it. It is essential that people review their Wills to ensure the way they have left their estate qualifies for the new relief.” Estate planning has also come back into focus with the £2million limit on full entitlement for the RNRB. “A lot of spouses will leave everything to each other, but on the second estate it all bunches up and could be over £2million.” The value of an estate can be reduced through either gifting or spending, but Gillian warns that a giver must have full mental capacity: those with power of attorney cannot make gifts without an expensive court application. Gillian also comments: “The changes in taxation of pensions and on death benefits payable from pensions may mean it is worth spending down other capital and leaving pensions intact. Attractive as pension flexiaccess drawdown can be, it may be better to spend capital which you know would be taxed at 40 per cent on death and which might also take you over the £2million cutoff point for RNRB. “Get advice on your will. Happy days FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS, SUKHOTHAI HAS GROWN AND GROWN. BUT, AS CHRIS WILSON DISCOVERS, THE COMMITMENT TO QUALITY IS AS STRONG AS EVER. ’m back where it all began. In 2002 Ban Kaewkraikhot, fresh from running a successful Thai restaurant in Bangkok, opened her first Sukhothai in a small room just off the main street in Chapel Allerton. I have fond memories of that tiny room that could hold perhaps 20 covers. It was cosy, friendly and had a limited but totally authentic menu bursting with fresh flavours. Fifteen years on and there are now three additional restaurants bearing the familiar Sukhothai logo, in Headingley, Harrogate and Leeds city centre. Meanwhile the original venue has expanded in size and scope. The menu is much more wide-ranging but, crucially, there has been no ‘dumbing down’ on commitment to fresh, clean flavours. In fact, economies of scale allow Ban to fly in fresh Thai ingredients every week to keep all her restaurants operating at the highest levels. Meanwhile the Chapel Allerton restaurant, bigger, busy and bustling though it may now be, is far enough off the beaten track to sustain memories of its low-key origins. If you’ve eaten in any of the Sukhothai restaurants you’ll know there is a huge emphasis on service which is always courteous, friendly and immaculate. Pat, the

Chapel Allerton manager, makes sure everything runs like clockwork and is always on hand to guide diners through a comprehensive menu that runs to several pages. We took some of the agony out of our selections by sharing the mixed seafood platter (£9.95). Spectacularly presented on a multi-layered stand that would have been ideal for serving a classic afternoon tea, this was put to good use to offer up a dazzling selection of satay fish and prawns, mussels and squid. Every element of this dish was perfect. The mussels were huge, fresh, and swimming in a savoury sauce, while the squid was tender and coated in the crispiest batter. All in all, we were off to a splendid start. Two shared main courses added to our sense of well-being. Pad nam prik pao phed (£10.95) was a flavoursome dish of stir-fried duck with chilli oil, sweet basil, mushrooms, spring onions, carrots and red pepper. Given a one chilli rating on the menu’s heat guide (three means steer clear unless you really like a challenge), this savoury treat left a pleasing tingling sensation on the tongue. To contrast, pla gang kiew wan (£14.95) was a whole steamed sea bass, served off the bone in a Thai green curry with coconut

milk, bamboo shoots and courgettes. This one was slightly hotter, earning two chillis, but the cooling coconut milk again kept the fires at bay and allowed the subtle blend of herbs and spices to shine through. Dishes of egg fried rice (£2.95) and soft rice noodles with beanshoots and egg (£3.35) provided ideal ballast and were perfect for soaking up those delicious sauces. Incidentally, Sukhothai was the name of Ban’s birthplace and a direct translation is “the dawn of happiness”. Considering the sense of well-being her restaurants have brought to so many people over the years, it was very well chosen. WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. ast year, Bradford broke a record when it scooped the Curry Capital of Britain title for the sixth year in a row. With so many restaurants to choose from, it comes as no surprise. But this also poses a problem for the discerning curry connoisseur; which restaurant do you choose? If you are looking for Indian cuisine with a difference, look no further than Kebabeesh. What makes its menu special, is the way it takes familiar dishes and gives them a twist. And the restaurant isn’t a stranger to acclaim, having received a string of awards and a number of rave reviews on Trip Advisor. Established in 1979, Kebabeesh is something of a local institution in Bradford and has a claim to fame as the first Indian restaurant in the area. The family business moved to its current location in Greengates in 1984 and, over the years, this gorgeous Grade II listed building has been refurbished and extended to include a light and airy conservatory and an open kitchen. Much like the Punjabi dance music that was playing as I arrived at the restaurant, it’s this balance of traditional values and moving with the trends of the time, that make this business such a success. Jay Durrani is the owner and is very active in the running of the restaurant, whilst son

and co-director Ammar, often takes their street food business to festivals all over Yorkshire including this year’s Tramlines Festival in Sheffield. After a couple of crisp poppadoms and a pickle tray, accompanied by a glass of house white wine (175ml, £3.30) and a pint of Cobra (£3.80) it made sense for my companion and I to try the food the restaurant is proudly named after. I started with the Kebabeesh special (£6.95), a mixed dish including chicken boti tikka, masala fish, a seekh kebab, a lamb chop and an onion bhaji, and my companion had the mixed kebab (£3.95), which included a seekh kebab, a shami kebab and chicken tikka. You would be forgiven for thinking that once you have had one kebab at a curry house, you have had them all, but each piece of meat on our plates had its own unique flavour. For mains, I had the king prawn and chicken tikka (£10.95), a medium-hot balti of garlic, ginger, plum tomatoes and chillies, and my companion had a chicken channa handi (£8.95) with chickpeas in a tomato sauce, which she chose to have spicy. A pilau rice (£2.10) provided the perfect dish to cool our curries, whilst the ginger and garlic naan (£2.95), topped with chunky

pieces of garlic, was deliciously soft and aromatic. Kebabeesh’s approach to desserts also differs to other Indian restaurants. Instead of an uninspiring menu of pre-packaged ice creams, the waitress brought round a cake stand full of impressive, patisserie-style desserts. We shared a white chocolate sponge cake (£4.50) alongside our pot of spiced masala chai (£3.95) for two. Vive La France! RACHEL MARTIN DISCOVERS STAND-OUT FOOD WITH GALLIC FLAIR AT BRASSERIE BLANC. he name Raymond Blanc and a passion for food are synonymous; he’s practically brimming over with an encyclopaedic knowledge and love of French cuisine. And though the boy whose childhood revolved around his formidable Maman and her kitchen table, has now grown into a gastronomic icon, his philosophy remains endearingly simple: “There’s great beauty in honest food, cooked with heart, using kitchen wisdom passed down through the generations.” Tucked away on Sovereign Street, Brasserie Blanc is deeply French. Elegance drips off the white linen cloths and bare brick walls, the waiters and waitresses speak in a variety of European accents, and the restaurant is split into three areas: a dark oak bar, a buzzy dining area, and a more intimate nook at the back, where we opted for a window seat looking out on to the courtyard. A glance at the menu revealed familiar classics - escargots (£7.45), steak tartare (£8.95), bouillabaisse (£18.90) – and we started the evening with a bottle of fullbodied, citrus-scented Picpoul de Pinet Languedoc-Roussillon (£24.50) – a very good recommendation from our waiter – followed by bread. I usually don’t bother with the bread: why fill your stomach before the main attraction? But it was too good to miss. The warm interior and crisp crust almost celestial when crowned with butter and rock salt. Salads are the bellwether of a good bistro,

and my starter of green papaya salad (£6.95) came decorated with mixed leaves, coriander, cashews and improbable quantities of fragrant mint. It was well-balanced, the papaya not in any way bitter (a common downfall), and though it has lost some herbs and other ingredients on the journey from Bangkok, Blanc’s rendition of traditional Isan cooking is vibrant, fresh and delicious. If ever there were a dish to make you wish it was cold again, my friend’s bowl of French onion soup (£6.95) was it. Slowly cooked and topped with indulgent gruyère cheese croutons and chive, the caramelised onions turned mellow and sweet in the Manchester brick-coloured broth. Laced with white wine and Cognac, it gave off such a heroic odour that she demanded I smell it twice before she tucked in. The stand-out was the king scallops Provençale. Sea-fresh rather than, as so often, over-salted, the scallops were dusted in a crunchy, deep-fried herb crumb, and laid meticulously on a bed of chargrilled courgette, sautéed potatoes, padron peppers and cherry tomato sauce. No two ways about it: this was the best bit of seafood I’ve had all year, each mouthful succulent and crisp. My friend relished every bite of the grilled rock lobster tail (£23.50). Served with prawn butter and French fries, each portion was thinly crisp, the meat outrageously fresh and sweet. Just be sure to eat it the moment it arrives, as it cools quickly. For dessert we shared a plate of perfectly

presented gooseberry crumble and ice cream (£5.90) and classic tarte au citron (£6.50), two large glasses of Muscat de Beaumes de Venise (125ml £6.80) – another worthy recommendation from our waiter, and probably not enough eau de mineral. The crumble was lavished with ginger, cinnamon and a dusting of toasted almonds that crackled between your teeth – the crunchy flakes soaking up the gooseberry compote and vanilla ice cream, and the latter took the opposite strategy; the deep-baked tart didn’t absorb the crème fraiche at all, but allowed the zesty lemon to sing out. After polishing off our wine, we headed out into the night, both in agreement we would return. I even sent a text to a Parisian acquaintance living in the city: “Brasserie Blanc est bon. CUBANA’S CULINARY DREAM TEAM HAS A NEW HEAD CHEF AND A NEW MENU.

ith over a decade as second in charge – there was no-one better to take control of one of Sheffield’s flagship

kitchens. Erkland Xhaja is celebrating his move to head of the Cubana kitchen in Leopold Square with the unveiling of his first menu. He worked passionately under the command of former head chef Fabian Cruz for over 13 years – Fabian himself had been there since the day the celebrated venue first opened on Trippet Lane, many years before its move to bigger premises. Albanian born Erkland moved to Italy as a child before settling in Sheffield as a teenager. He originally started working at Nonnas on Ecclesall Road, joining Cubana in 2002 – Erkland now heads up a team of six that includes some of the most experienced and well-respected chefs in the city in the Cubana kitchen that caters for hundreds of covers every week and is now one of the city’s

busiest independent bar/restaurants. He is joined in Cubana’s culinary team by Nicolino Dente, former owner and head chef of Ecclesall Road’s Santinos, Stuart Berry, the original head chef at Nonnas and former owner of Chesterfield Road restaurants Kitos and Swanky Franks, and Ryan Christian, former owner and head chef of Sharrowvale Road’s The Pasta Bar. Erkland’s new menu sees 12 new dishes in a menu consisting of over 50 tapas dishes. It includes his own twist on the celebrated Brazilian stew made with diced pork shoulder, chorizo, smoked bacon, black beans, red peppers, tomato purée and smoked paprika. There’s also a big emphasis on fresh fish dishes including a seafood paella served in a traditional paella pan at your table and several tapas dishes with inspiration taken from trips to the Canary Islands – home of Erkland’s partner. Cubana co-owner Adrian Bagnoli said:

“There’s no-one better qualified than Erkland to develop the Cubana menu. The new dishes the team have come up with are some of the best we’ve served and fit in perfectly with the ever-present Cubana favourites for the perfectly balanced tapas menu. I’m looking forward to seeing how popular the new dishes will be and receiving feedback from our regular customers.” Adrian also ensured a dish he tried on a recent family holiday to Mallorca also made the new menu. He said: “We visited an excellent tapas bar in Alcudia and were blown away by their Tiras de Calamares y Chorizo which consists of fresh strips of squid served with small pieces of chorizo glazed in orange and honey– just delicious. So when an existing customer of ours – Mr and Mrs Dufton – came back to see us, their brief was they were moving out of a large family home and relocating to an apartment in what was formerly the Old Terry’s chocolate factory, located in Bishopthorpe just outside of York. We couldn’t wait to get started on what was a very exciting project. The building in which their apartment is located is in itself of historical significance. Built in 1924 and opening in 1926, the Art Deco-style building opened as “Terry’s of York” and launched its new product – the chocolate apple! It closed its doors in 2005 but has been subject to a £165million refurbishment, incorporating residential, commercial, leisure, hotels, shops and bars, and has been renamed “The Chocolate Works”.

Sofia, our interior designer, said: “It has been a pleasure working with Mr and Mrs Dufton, as they had a very clear idea on how they wanted their living/dining space to look. “They had various pieces of artwork and accessories that they had collected over the years which they wanted to incorporate into the scheme, to sit alongside Boconcept furniture. “They chose a grey felt Fargo sofa for the living area but with a punch of blue colour from the two Fly chairs which sit in front of the large windows overlooking the balcony, carrying the look through into the dining area with the grey glass Milano extending table, grey Zarra chairs, and matt grey Fermo sideboard, which was a perfect showcase for Mrs Dufton to display her accessories on.” Sofia added: “The end result has been amazing. Boconcept furniture sits so well against the backdrop of the Dufton’s own accessories and artwork and has given them a contemporary living/dining area which is both stylish and practical and all packaged together in this rather beautiful and unique building.” To book a free interior design service, call or email us.

The business has evolved over the 25 years. Each year we invest in both the upkeep and extension of the estate. Weetwood has grown from the original development and conversion from university halls of residents to the largest conference and events hotel in the north of England. Describe your business.

Weetwood estate is a 114-bedroom hotel, wedding venue, conference centre with 36 conference rooms, modern Mediterranean 160-cover restaurant, stables, real ale pub, Manor House as well as offering private dining for events and weddings.

We have had the business for three-and-ahalf years, although the shop itself has been a shoe shop for over 70 years. What was the inspiration for starting your business?

We always said that we wanted to work for ourselves and together. As we have been in footwear and fashion for many years, we decided it was time to go for it. With our knowledge and experience we’ve gained over the years we knew this would be a positive mix to make the business a great success. How has your business grown?

We looked at the strengths and identified where we could improve the product and brand offering to our customers, coupled with the merchandising and the overall appearance of the store. We worked with existing brands and new brands to present to our customers, products that would appeal and attract their attention to something new that would interest and excite them. We deliver a personal service, offering our knowledge to allow customers to make the right choice.

Rudding Park was acquired by the Mackaness family in 1972 and is still run by two generations of the family. Horto, the new restaurant originally opened as a pop-up in summer 2016 and proved so popular that it’s now become a permanent fixture relocating to the new Rudding Park Spa which opening in May 2017. What was the inspiration for starting your business?

We opened the Clocktower restaurant in 1999 and whilst being popular it was important for us to offer our guests a choice, and with the opening of the new spa the timing was right to introduce a new exciting restaurant concept. The whole team put their heart and soul into creating the Horto experience. Taking inspiration from head chef, Murray Wilson, kitchen gardener Adrian Reeve and the interior design team, we’ve turned our vision into a reality and created a new contemporary dining experience which our guests love.

We are a single, multi-branded independent shoe retailer for women’s and men’s shoes and also offer a wide range of handbags. I’ve always thought that buying presents for your kids and their friends should be an enjoyable experience and all too often I found that I was resorting to grabbing a gift in the supermarket for friends’ parties. I wanted to create a shop where I could offer help with what to buy and have a range of non-branded fabulous toys that will encourage a child’s imagination and development. Ultimately shopping for kids should be a pleasure to buy and give.

What was the inspiration for starting your business?

We opened Stonehouse Fireplaces having manufactured stone and marble fireplaces for 20 years. We decided to use our passion for fireplaces to open a more design-led fireplace showroom where we could offer bespoke solutions using the best quality fires and stoves available. It was the best decision for the business and over the last six years it has become one of the main fireplace showrooms in North Yorkshire. How has your business grown?

he inheritance tax rules changed earlier this year. So, what does this mean for your estate?

Inheritance Tax:

When somebody dies, a calculation is made to determine whether their estate has to pay inheritance tax (IHT). Everybody has a nil rate band (NRB) of £325,000, which they can leave to whoever they like without having to pay tax. Anything over £325,000 is taxed at 40 per cent. Anything left to a spouse, civil partner or charity is exempt so doesn’t use any of the NRB, and any unused NRB passes on to a surviving spouse. Some types of assets and lifetime gifts are exempt. In April, a new allowance called the Residential Nil Rate Band (‘RNRB’) was introduced. This is available in addition to the NRB. However, there are some conditions. 1. The RNRB can only be used against an interest in a residence. It can only be used against one property and is limited to the value of the equity in the property. 2. It can only be used if the interest in the property is left to lineal descendants. This includes children, grandchildren and their spouses. This means that the estate of somebody who did not have children will potentially have to pay more tax than somebody who had children. 94 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

Each individual currently has a maximum available RNRB of £100,000 but this is set to increase. Married couples and civil partners can transfer any unused RNRB to each other. What to consider:

1. If your home is mortgaged, you may be limiting the amount of allowance you can use. 2. Lots of people have trusts in their wills. Unfortunately, many trusts won’t be able to use the RNRB, even if the beneficiaries are children. 3. If grandparents put an age limit on gifts to grandchildren there is a risk that the RNRB won’t be available. Now is a very good time to review your will, or make a will if you haven’t done so already.
