The St Leger and Wentworth are very closely connected as Charles Watson-Wentworth, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, worked '+! &" )( "+"%'# (! )#( %$! ( %( ) )#(%!()&%',+"&$(%$)(#' )( #&%(#* (" ( ( on Cantley Common in Doncaster. In fact, Lord Rockingham’s bay ++ (Allabaculia, won the inaugural running of the race. We are linking up to provide visitors to the racecourse with special access to Wentworth Woodhouse and likewise the team at the racecourse will be promoting the work of the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust. It’s a really positive partnership, with both organisations using our historical links to work together to promote the very best of South Yorkshire. Hello AUTUMN!

Why there’s no time for the end-of-summer blues, by Jordan Odu. ummer might be drawing to a close, but boy, what a summer it’s been! I’ve had a brilliant few months making the most of being outdoors, with festivals, events and plenty of opportunities to soak up the atmosphere across Leeds. But as much as I love those long summer evenings, I have to admit I’m ready for autumn to kick in. Bring on the cosy nights, autumn wardrobes and a whole new season of things to see and do. Of course, there was only one way to properly see out summer - Leeds Carnival. I’ve been going since I was a child and it is one of the highlights of my year. The incredible food, music, entertainment, costumes, atmosphere, and of course all the rum! make it such a special celebration. There’s really nothing quite like it. But now the nights are starting to draw in, it’s time to take things inside. One of the newest arrivals to the city is Moods, and it’s already proving to be a fantastic addition to Leeds. Stylish, social and somewhere a little different to add to your of place that a ‘quick’ afternoon vino or cocktail can turn into a perfect evening. Comedy fans have plenty to smile about too, as The Glee Club has announced a particularly exciting for families. The venue is launching what are believed to be comedy shows, with weekend lunchtime performances. Each two-hour show will feature a mix of British and international comedians who specialise in entertaining audiences of all ages, with plenty of age-appropriate comedy. I love the idea of introducing younger audiences to live comedy and giving families another option for a fun day out in the city. If you’re a regular reader of this column, you’ll already know I love a trip to the theatre, and there’s lots to tempt me over the next few months at Leeds Grand Theatre. The autumn programme includes the Johnny Cash musical, SIX and Mrs Another of my favourite entertainment

The Pussycat Dolls, Westlife and The World of Hans Zimmer are all taking to the stage, giving us everything from pop nostalgia to spectacular cinematic music. And you know darker nights are really on their way when Light Night Leeds announces its return. This year there’s a change, with the festival taking place during half term on 28 and 29 October, making it even easier for families and

visitors of all ages to enjoy the city after dark. This year’s theme is A City Speaks, forming part of Leeds 400 and marking 400 years since Leeds was granted its Expect spectacular large-scale projections, immersive artworks and those magical moments when familiar parts of the city are completely transformed by light. It’s always one of my favourite autumn events. If an escape room challenge is your idea of a good time (or The Crystal Maze was your favourite TV show) there’s another new arrival to keep on your radar. Prison Island is heading to the Merrion Centre, bringing an immersive team challenge to the city. tackle a series of themed cells testing physical ability, skill, teamwork and problem-solving. It sounds like exactly the sort of experience guaranteed to bring out everyone’s competitive side, mine included! It’s slated to open in time for Christmas, so watch this space. Autumn is also a good time to refocus on health and wellbeing, and I’m always interested in trying something new. So I was really excited recently to discover metahealth, a Leeds clinic using noninvasive technology with a focus on helping people understand and improve their health before problems arise, rather than only seeking reactive treatments. Its ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach brings together therapies and technologies including musculoskeletal recovery, red and near-infrared light, radiofrequency, vibration and oxygen therapy. Summer, you’ve been banging, but autumn, I’m ready for you.

Trainer Mark Johnston is a serial winner. He spoke to Pete Thompson about Kingsley Park, his love of Yorkshire and handing over the reins to his son. oncaster Racecourse will always hold a special place in legendary Yorkshire-based trainer Mark Johnston’s heart. Johnston became the most successful British trainer of all time when Frankie Dettori rode Poet’s Society to victory at York in 2018. Four years later, Johnston Racing celebrated a staggering 5,000th winner British and Irish Classics, as well as

numerous Group One races. Johnston set the highly impressive 300-acre Kingsley Park in Middleham up in 1987 and now assists his son, Charlie, after handing his training licence over to him at the start of 2023. The 66-year-old has spent so much time in winners’ enclosures over the years, it is understandable that he is unable to remember all of his victories at the prestigious Betfred St Leger Festival.

But he will never forget seeing the great Double Trigger complete the remarkable feat of landing the Stayers’ Triple Crown - Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup – in 1995. The Ron-Huggins owned ‘Trigger’ went on to win the Doncaster Cup three times and has been immortalised with a statue beside the Grandstand, along with a bar at the Town Moor course.

I will be watching the race, but I may not be there as it clashes with commitments in Ireland. “The St Leger is a great meeting. probably be Craft Express winning the Portland Handicap in 1989 when a large number of horses fell. won at the St Leger meeting. That was quite important to us at the time, as it was a very good race to win a big meeting.” It is almost 40 years since Johnston made the decision to base himself in the beautiful Yo Yorkshire Dales and he has never looked back. He said: “I would not consider myself to be an adopted Yorkshireman – as I am not sure you can be - but I would always argue there are no better places in England. “In my early days of training in Yorkshire I used to say the two racetracks that stood out in Britain above all others were Ascot and York. Now I would say York is the best. “For me, we have York at the top of tree in Yorkshire, but then you have the likes of Doncaster, Catterick, Wetherby, Ripon etc, there are so many courses that are great in different ways. “The principle reason I moved from Lincolnshire to Yorkshire all those years ago was the number of tracks there are here. When I was looking to move, I looked at the map and saw the A1 motorway as the artery of racing in Britain. “I looked at Epsom and being south of London, but I didn’t want on the M25. “There is a great passion for the sport in Yorkshire, with so much racing to go and watch, and it’s a lovely place to call home. Ingredients (Serves 2) For the chicken: ½ whole chicken (700–800g), skin on 20g fresh garlic 15g fresh ginger 2 tbsp Kashmiri chilli powder 1 tsp hot chilli powder 1 tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp black pepper 1½ tsp sea salt 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp thick Greek yoghurt 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tsp honey For the onion gravy: 2 large onions, sliced 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 tbsp butter 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tsp black pepper ½ tsp turmeric 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 250ml rich chicken stock Salt to taste For the Hasselback potatoes: 2 medium Maris Piper potatoes 2 tbsp butter 1 tbsp vegetable oil Sea salt Black pepper Fresh thyme or rosemary

Method 1. Marinate the Chicken Blend the garlic, ginger, chilli powders, turmeric, yoghurt, lemon juice, honey, oil, salt and pepper into a smooth paste. Coat the chicken thoroughly, ensuring the ! 2. Slow Roast Preheat the oven to 160°C (fan). Place the chicken on a roasting tray and cook for 60-70 minutes, basting every 15 minutes with the roasting juices. ! ! golden, lightly charred and crisp. Rest the chicken for ten minutes before serving. 3. Onion Gravy Cook the onions slowly in butter and oil over a low heat for 20–25 minutes until deeply caramelised. Add the garlic, black pepper and turmeric and cook for 2 minutes. Pour in the chicken stock and Worcestershire sauce and simmer until reduced to a rich glossy gravy. Season to taste. 4. Hasselback Potatoes Slice the potatoes almost through, leaving the base intact. Brush generously with butter and oil, season with salt, pepper and thyme. Roast at 190°C for 50-60 minutes, brushing with butter every 15 minutes until crispy To Serve Place the roasted hasselback potatoes on a warm plate. Arrange the chilli garlic half roasted chicken on top or alongside. Finish with generous spoonfuls of rich onion gravy. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve with Kerala Canteen Porotta for the ultimate experience.
