Welcome to our September edition of Northside.

Weddings come into focus this month and as well as looking at the debate between traditional and non-traditional weddings, we speak to local businesses about how you can make your big day run as smoothly as possible.

Both our fashion and beauty features are heavily featured on occasions and how you can stand out from the crowd at any upcoming celebration.

Yorkshire has a rich heritage with horse racing and with that in mind, we look at its nine racecourses and what makes each of them unique.

We also speak to comedian Jason Byrne and also get some travel inspiration in the form of a luxury stay in Newcastle.

We also have our regular Dish of the Month from chef Bobby Geetha and our regular homes features. See you next month.

The best start to your child’s educational JOURNEY

A primary school experience laying the foundations for an exciting education.

The Queen Ethelburga’s educational journey begins in Chapter House, a small school with a family atmosphere for children aged 3 months to 10 years. Safely nestled within the wider school estate which caters for students up to Year 13, Chapter House provides a home from home for children to begin their own learning journey through imaginative play and inspiring lessons, cared for by an expert team.

In Chapter House, discoveries are not limited to the classroom. Playtimes and evenings are a time for fun with friends and the chance to learn new skills

mindfulness, sign and sing, and newspaper club. Class teachers get to know each child in their care, tailoring their teaching

learning style.

At the school, all primary students study Spanish and Mandarin each week under the tutelage of native speakers from Year 1 and have regular swimming lessons in the onsite 25m swimming pool. They partake in cooking and baking classes in a specialist food technology room and have forest school lessons in a dedicated woodland

forest school teacher. In addition, all pupils follow a sports programme under specialist coaches that focuses on multi-skills to keep every individual motivated and engaged in physical activity and sports. Each year they compete in the annual Sports Day in groups known as houses which creates a real sense of belonging and camaraderie, no matter their ability, and older students

workshops which develop their skills further.

Every new starter is assessed so that an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) can be created for them, tailoring the support they receive. This can mean helping bring them up through extra support sessions, individual tuition by learning support specialists or differentiated learning plans.

ILPs also identify gifted areas and help us to push children through accelerated learning clubs or talent-focused enrichment clubs.

Above all, Chapter House is a family feel school that keeps its class sizes small, so that children have up to 50 per cent more teacher contact time than larger classes. We also pride ourselves on parent communication through parent meetings and reports every half term, rather than the standard twice a year, and daily EYFS updates on Tapestry.

in the CLOUDS

Ahead of his latest tour, comedian Jason Byrne talks to Ashley Davies.
Head

f you’re the kind of comedian who thrives on chaotic audience interaction, as Jason Byrne clearly does, how do you decide who to select from the crowd?

Well, for starters, you’re probably going to go for someone sitting near the front as, by now, those are the punters who’ll know there’s a good chance of them getting involved in his high-energy shows. He tends also to pick men, because their ineptitude at following instructions makes things even more entertaining.

“Every time I’ve picked a woman they’ve done what I’ve asked them perfectly,” says Byrne on the eve of his new Edinburgh Festival Fringe show – and subsequent tour – Head in the Clouds.

“When a man does it, he’s often facing the wrong way, he doesn’t know what I’m saying, he’s gone off and come back. Men between the ages of 30 and 60 are normally so used to being guided by their wives that they don’t know what they’re doing. Once this guy couldn’t hear what I was saying because his wife had forgotten to give him his hearing aid – to actually put them in his ears for him.”

Byrne says the name for the new show comes from him having got lost in his own imagination as a kid. “The teachers would tell me I had my head in the clouds,” he says. “I was obviously creating my own little world, and they were always telling me to stop daydreaming and go back to maths.”

It’s something he spoke about with the late Irish poet and playwright Seamus Heaney, whose teachers would regularly reprimand him for favouring scribbling away over following the rules. Imagine the art that would’ve been lost had those types of teachers had succeeded in beating the dreams out of kids like that.

Byrne’s on a mission to get adults to enjoy the giddiness of mucking around –the sort of ridiculous fun you used to see on Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer’s shows, such as fruit being tromboned off people’s heads.

team building, which is horrendous. Nobody likes that,” says the Dubliner who’s the biggest selling comedian at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. “This is just me orchestrating a silly night with some nice bits of stand-up.”

In recent years Byrne’s been saying he’s got to be less physical on stage than he used to. He does, after all, now have six stents in his body and is supposed to be taking things a bit more easy. But, although what he’s doing now is less dangerous than what he’s done in the past (such as

swinging on a mock wrecking ball in white vest and pants in 2013/14), he’s never going to be the sort of comic who stands behind a microphone stand for the whole show.

In last year’s outing, called No Show as it was largely improvised, he only really did one big bit of physical comedy, and that was miming the guy who works on the waltzers at the fair ground – walking around the stage backwards. Simple but hilarious.

One of the ideas he’s playing with for the new show is a sort of acknowledgement of the multi-generational appeal of his comedy. “I hate the way younger people get dissed for being on their phones,” he says, after underlining how much he likes seeing all ages in his audience. “I always say that if we had phones in the

other, though. Once, a Londoner described himself as a “building manager” and a Scot at the back of the auditorium said: “Ah, he’s a janny.”

“I was confused so I asked what that is,” he recalls. “A Scottish lady said: ‘A janny is a janny.’ Then another woman stood up and went, ‘Janitor, Jason. She’s trying to say janitor.’ I went: ‘Oh, who are you?” and she went, ‘I’m a protestant,’ and sat down. The crowd were killing themselves.”

As well as putting together Head in the Clouds, Byrne is currently working on an animation project which he hopes will be a sort of Irish version of The Simpsons. Based on Paddy Lama, his play about his late father, it’s an adult, 1980s/90s-set sitcom about an Irish family. It’s being developed with Boulder Media, who

“Byrne’s on a mission to get adults to enjoy the giddiness of mucking around – the sort of ridiculous fun you used to see on Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer’s shows, such as fruit being tromboned off people’s heads.”

1980s we’d have been on the phones! We wouldn’t have been saying, ‘I’m not going on the phone, oh no, I’m going

holding those things and going: ‘LOOK AT THIS!’”

So, again, without wanting to give too much away, he’ll be calling a few younger people up on stage and getting them to guess the purpose of certain now obsolete objects from the 1980s and 90s. This will all happen while somebody else does something ridiculously distracting

carefully planned chaos.

Byrne doesn’t really have a problem with hecklers; if anything, his biggest onstage challenges have involved audience members wanting to join in, but that always ends up in a fun time for everyone. On the odd occasion when someone isn’t being terribly nice, he has in the past had a brilliantly creative way of dealing with it.

He used to have Deal or No Deal-type boxes across the back of the stage, and when someone was giving him a hard time

to win some money?” They’d always say yes, and when they picked their number he’d open the corresponding box to reveal the word, “c**t”. Byrne never uses that word on stage, so the effect is always jawdropping.

He’s had audience members heckle each

“You sometimes have men in a pub with no talent, no ability to sing, and the whole place goes quiet while they start going

the English took our instruments off us hundreds of years ago,” he laughs, hinting at some comical onstage retribution being planned.

At a time when grim news is around every corner, it’s the kind of silly fun we could all do with. As he puts it: “In case World War III starts it’ll be really good if I get the show in just before then.”

Try something new and EXCITING

There’s no let up in Leeds this month as the city is set to welcome a host of new

As we wave goodbye to sunny days and alfresco nights, I’ve been looking back on what a mega few months it’s been. From festivals and open-air gigs to amazing client events and launches, summer 2025 has been one to remember. Leeds has truly been buzzing with some amazing new bars and restaurants opening their doors and there’s plenty more to come.

I’m super excited that the UK’s number one coffee spot, Federal, is making its way across the Pennines and opening its

not familiar with Federal, it has taken Manchester by storm over the last ten years with its Aussie-inspired neighbourhood

delicious all-day brunch. It will seriously level up your daytime eats with dishes such as chilli scrambled eggs, corn fritters and French toast and that unbeatable Aussie vibe all washed down with seriously good coffee, teas, fresh juices, and classic brunch cocktails including Mimosas and Bloody Marys. Plus, if you haven’t seen its famous cans of coffee going viral over on socials – where have you been? Watch this space for a launch date!

It’s been a long time coming but Leeds shouting about. Another Northwest export, Madre and Salon Madre lands at Wellington Place this autumn. I’m a huge Mexican food fan so this one has got me a little excited. By day, Madre is a laid-back spot for leisurely lunches, by night, it transforms into a buzzy Mexican restaurant serving everything from Oaxacan-inspired moles and salsas to Baja-style mariscos and Sonoran grilled meats.

Salon Madre, just around the corner, turns up the volume. Think tequila-fuelled nights, DJs, pool tables, and a margarita menu that I will have no issue working my way through. It’s the perfect go-to for date night or late-night vibes, it’s going to be the place to be.

Sticking with food, another must-visit for me is going to be La Fiesta. It’s an ‘all-

you-can-eat’ tapas concept heading to the Merrion Centre, Leeds and let’s just say I’m here for it. It’s basically a bottomlessstyle menu with a twist and promises to immerse diners in the culinary traditions of Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Greece.

The experience starts at a central salad bar with a wide choice of antipasti-style favourites, including classic Pinchos, Italian and Spanish cheeses, charcuterie, artisan breads, and Mediterraneaninspired salads. Tapas is then made fresh to order and served to the table in waves throughout the meal. The choice is huge, so my advice would be to make sure you arrive hungry!

Another brilliant addition to the Leeds food and drink scene this autumn is Brewery Wharf Tavern. The waterside bar comes from the team behind Whitelocks and the fantastic White Cloth Hall and takes over a prime spot on the River Aire which formerly housed one of my favourite old haunts, Oracle. The venue is going to be showcasing a wide range of independent beers and real ales alongside great cocktails and wines and will drink suppliers.

It feels like I can’t go anywhere without hearing people talk about the latest sport

landed at David Lloyd Leeds (arguably the best gym in the city). Whether you’re a seasoned player or just curious, this mix of tennis and squash is seemingly addictive and looks seriously fun. The club has created three amazing new Padel courts with the best racquet coaches to boot. It’s all included in your gym membership and

going to add it my gym schedule – after all it’s never too early to get in shape for the festive season (yes, I went there!).

With so much happening across the city, there’s never been a better time to be out and trying something new. I’ll be giving it all a whirl so see you out there!

ost of us are familiar with the traditional wedding – we all grew up with the image of what a wedding should look like. A typical ceremony begins with beautiful music playing, the bridesmaids and groomsmen walking down the aisle in pairs. Flower Girls and Page Boys, looking smart and pretty, walk sweetly down the aisle, throwing rose petals, surrounded by sounds of “oooo” and “ahhhh”, as the wedding guests’ hearts melt. The tone of the wedding is set, with a unique, precious milestone moment lying ahead.

The maid of honour enters, then comes the bride, making her grand entrance in a

train trailing behind. She is accompanied and walks towards the groom with a delicate smile.

After the opening remarks comes the exchange of vows. The couple express their unconditional love and commitment each other, sharing their hopes and promises, often bringing tears of joy.

Rings are exchanged, after which you married: “I now pronounce you husband and wife”.

A party at the wedding’s reception commences, with dancing, drinking, the cutting of the cake newlywed, and a bouquet toss.

In 2025, the traditional wedding is becoming less popular. Perhaps it is not surprising that untraditional weddings are on the rise, what with the relentless rise of costs, rapid development of technology and social media and increased awareness of our impact on the environment, all in the past decade. The Dakota Deluxe has brought a touch of luxury to Newcastle’s Quayside, writes Richard Abbey.

I like to think I’m past all those types puzzled looks.

But while this North East gem might often be described as the ultimate party city, there’s much more to Newcastle than drinking, dancing and doner kebabs in the Bigg Market.

The city has culture in abundance; from the castle and cathedral to a wealth of galleries and museums. Shopping offers a good mix of independent boutiques and high street names, and of course there’s the Metro Centre not too far away. Newcastle’s Metro network also means it’s really easy to reach all parts of the city and surrounding areas, including coastal spots such as Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. The former is well worth a visit and has its own castle and priory to explore as well as gorgeous sandy beaches and a buntingstrewn high street.

We arrived in Newcastle on a sunny

afternoon, passing the Angel of the North after leaving the A1 and travelling across the Tyne Bridge to reach our destination for the

It’s a curious building, U-shaped with a huge forecourt out front which gives it a sense of grandeur. Chatting to the very helpful reception team, I was told it used to the deluxe treatment.

You’d never know.

The quiet interior, all dark and mysterious, feels luxurious from the moment you step through the door. This was echoed in our room, a Classic King which had a stunning archway window with views over the River Tyne and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

It was a good size, with a huge king-size bed dominating the space as well as two armchairs and table, which sat under the archway. The bathroom had both a bath and walk-in shower as well as toiletries from Molton Brown. Tea and coffee facilities also included an espresso machine, as well as fresh milk and drinks in the fridge. For the main event I tucked into a perfectly-cooked medium-rare 340g New York Strip steak (£75) whilst my wife opted for the 350g Secreto Ibérico pork steak

Dear Doctor

The importance of blood testing in preventive health care. By Gail Airton (HCA/ Phlebotomist) with over 16 years’ Phlebotomy experience.

lood tests play a vital role in diagnosing, monitoring, and managing a wide range of medical conditions— often before any symptoms are present. As a key part of proactive healthcare, blood testing provides valuable insight into your current health status and helps guide decisions around treatment, lifestyle, and long-term wellbeing.

At The Avenue Clinic, we offer an extensive selection of onsite blood tests, giving our patients immediate access to essential health information. Whether you’re looking to monitor general health, explore hormonal changes, optimise sports performance, or check for underlying conditions, we’re here to support your journey.

Medical care and beyond

Based in the heart of Alwoodley, Leeds, The Avenue Clinic instantly sets itself apart from other practices for many reasons. Operating from a delightful property that sits within a beautifully maintained garden space, patients who appreciate a quiet home from home luxury are immediately attracted.

Whilst prices remain competitive, the clinic’s outstanding service standards are delivered much to the gratitude of patients as well as referring practitioners. Referrals regularly come in from private GP’s, healthcare practitioners and even private hospital consultants: all of whom commend the clinic’s drive to provide unrivalled speed and access to care.

Most recently the The Avenue Clinic was approached to become the regional blood testing site for a leading UK laboratory trusted by the NHS, and will see patients coming in from Premier League football clubs, John Lewis and Partners, Team GB, and some of the largest online hormone and hair loss businesses.

Beyond providing medical care, The Avenue Clinic’s team now provide strategic support at executive level within local community projects, food banks, gang prevention organisations, as well as professional and foundation sporting organisations.

Get in touch for further information on how your organisations could partner with the clinic.

We provide tests covering:

• General health and wellbeing

• Female-focused and male-focused panels

• Nutrition and sports performance

• Genetic screening

• Sexual health

Blood tests can detect early signs of conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, or hormonal imbalances—many of which may not cause noticeable symptoms. Early detection allows for timely treatment, personalised health plans, and peace of mind.

Our testing process is quick and minimally invasive. Results are typically available within days, and patients are welcome to steps. This might include recommended lifestyle adjustments, medication, or further testing.

We offer daily appointments, including same-day availability, planning to start a family, maximise your athletic performance, or simply take charge of your health, our team is here to help.

For more information or to book an appointment, please contact the clinic – our staff are always happy to assist.

IN BRIEF

Fiona Slight appointed new curator at RHS Garden Harlow Carr

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has appointed Fiona Slight to the role of Curator at RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Fiona will take over from Paul Cook this summer, who became Curator in 2013 and is leaving the role after 12 years to pursue personal endeavours.

Head of RHS Garden Harlow Carr Liz Thwaite says, “After an extensive search, Fiona’s passion for horticulture and vision for RHS Garden Harlow Carr left us in no doubt she is the best person to take on the role.

“Paul leaves an impressive legacy at RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Taking the garden to a new level, developing the Woodland, Streamside and Alpine collections. With the RHS Harlow Carr team, he has created some of the most iconic plantings in any of the RHS Gardens. The Thaliana Bridge and redevelopment of the Harrogate Arms and landscape opened in 2024, creating focus in the garden, bringing coherence to both the landscape and visitor experience. While he will be missed by us all, and we wish him all the very best, we are delighted Paul is handing over the mantle to Fiona, with whom he has worked for three years and who herself has had a remarkable career to date and shares his bold vision for our beloved Yorkshire garden.”

Fiona brings a wealth of horticultural experience to the role and has most recently spent the last two and a half years as Garden Manager at RHS Garden Harlow Carr managing the Alpine, Streamside, Woodland and Floral teams.
