hirty years after Come Find Yourself gatecrashed the Britpop era with its unmistakable New York swagger, original Fun Lovin’ Criminals frontman Huey Morgan is taking the seminal debut back on the road with a brand-new band for a 13-date UK tour this October. Looking back on the album that changed his life and soundtracked a generation, Morgan talks about the New York scene that shaped it, the unlikely story behind “Scooby Snacks” and why, three decades on, those songs ultimately belong to the people who made them part of their lives.
T
Thirty years on, when you hear Come Find Yourself, what goes through your head?
It’s really trippy because you go back 30 years on anything and you’re a different person. When I made that record, those were all the stories that I had accumulated up to that point. I was 27. I’d been in the Marines, I’d been a bit of a troublemaker in New York City, and I was dealing with a lot of things in my a lot of that stuff into the lyrics. The funny thing is, I wasn’t even supposed to be the singer. I just wanted to be the guitar player. Fast and I were working together with Steve, making what the vocals were going to be like. We knew we wanted it to be rap music, but when we started talking to rappers we knew, they were talking about themselves and girls and stuff, and it seemed a little banal for the music. We’d put so much time and effort into making that music, I’d always written poetry and things, and a lot of these songs were actually short stories or novellas I’d written over the years. I went back to my notebooks and started looking at those stories. That’s where songs like “King of New York” came from. So did you already know what Fun Lovin’ Criminals were going to sound like?
We knew we wanted to mix a bunch of different styles together. Fast was into electronic music, Steve had a lot of player who had listened to all kinds of stuff growing up. We really thought the music deserved more, lyrically. I wanted to make sure the lyrics were equal to the music. It was a challenge to make sure that what I was
saying was worthy of the music we were creating.
song about a “what if”, rather than “let’s go and do this”.
The album sounds incredibly come from?
If you had to pick one song that best represents who Fun Lovin’ Criminals were in 1996, which would it be?
It was probably 70 per cent true and hoping for the best! We recorded a lot and wrote a lot of the music before we had our record deal. When we got signed to EMI, it freaked me out because I thought, “Wait, I’ve been listening to music my whole life and no one’s going to buy this!” I just thought it was good music. I enjoyed making it. It was different and new, but I didn’t think anything would come of it. Because of that, I didn’t have any hang-ups about writing whatever I wanted to write about. Scooby Snacks track. Did you know you had something special?
It’s funny because we actually had a version for the album that was faster and had a whole bunch of rock ’n’ roll guitars in the chorus. We had the demo, though, and when we played it for David Seegerson, he said, “What happened to the syncopated, slowed-down, cool groove thing?” We told him that live we played it faster, and he was like, “Whoa, there’s something special about that.” He insisted that we revisit the demo version. That was really the only time anybody got in our business about stuff. And then there are the Pulp Fiction samples. Whose idea was that?
A lot of that song was put together by Fast. He put the Tones on Tail element in there, and I thought that was brilliant. The Tarantino stuff came from the fact that we were huge fans of Tarantino. We used to write a lot of our music in the living room of the loft we lived in, with the TV on but the volume down. With “Scooby Snacks”, we thought, “Who’s going to understand what the hell we’re talking about? Will they get the joke?” Fast said it was kind of a Tarantino noir thing and suggested getting the laser disc and cutting a couple of samples out to see what worked. It was a great move. The label initially didn’t like the samples because they were going to be expensive. But I was sold. I thought those samples brought everybody into the joke. They gave people the context to understand that it was a funny
I’d say “King of New York”. It’s essentially a folk story about John Gotti, but it’s also quintessentially what we did. It had the hip-hop element, it was a story about New York City and it had all these cultural touchstones. I don’t think anybody else would have talked about John Gotti at that time without fearing they would get killed! I was married into a mob family at that point, so I had to have a sit-down with these guys to get it right. The UK became such a huge market for you. Why do you think British audiences connected so strongly with the band?
Initially it took off in the Benelux. We had a connection with a clothing company and our demo tapes were going out to skateboard shops around the world. People were discovering the music through that skateboard culture. Because EMI was a British label, they realised they had something good when people in Holland and Belgium were digging it, and they put us on the front burner at EMI UK. We came over to the UK and people started rocking with it almost immediately. We were juxtaposed against all the Britpop people were hearing. It was fresh. There was humour in it, and elements of popular music that weren’t necessarily rock. We also weren’t afraid to talk to people, be funny or not take ourselves too seriously. Shows like TFI Friday helped break us. Thirty years on, do you hear the album differently?
I hear it all differently. There’s that saying: no man steps in the same river twice. I go back to that record because I play the songs with my new band, and it’s great hearing them reinterpreted. An album is a snapshot of a period in time for an artist. I was 27 and I was a very different guy. I was under a lot of pressure because we didn’t have a manager and I was juggling all these different parts of the music business. Huey Morgan is at Leeds Brudenell Social Club on 13 October. Sweet Chaos is the album that follows from a place of hard-won clarity. Written two years on, it is bolder, broader, and at times more raw. Lewis says. “This new album is a bit angrier in places. You don’t know these things until you listen back: the extent to which your state of mind pervades the thing.” A BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe musical instincts busking across Europe in his youth - an experience that informs the raw authenticity of his work. The late, and very great, Dame Julie Kenny, founded the event in 2019 and since her untimely passing last year we have dedicated the event to her memory, raising a glass to her whilst also raising as much money as possible on the night to support our work with communities. The Ball is taking place during our ‘Echoes of the House’ season, during which we are animating the State Rooms using immersive digital and interactive will enjoy delicious food, celebratory cocktails, music and dance as well as an exciting cultural offer. during the event and all proceeds go towards the Dame Julie Legacy Fund, every penny donated will continue to carry her vision to make Wentworth a beacon of opportunity and change for the region she loved. Tickets can be purchased on the website but they are selling fast. People have commented that there doesn’t seem to be much progress with the restoration project on site of late, but the reality is that all big capital works programmes take a long and protracted period of planning. The development phase of any project allows us to carry out detailed condition, bat and asbestos surveys, investigate the impact of any the designs, ensuring we have all the statutory consents in place (not an easy task with a Grade I Listed building). always the tricky part, once we have contractors on site, we know the end of the project is in sight. In the New Year two new major projects move into delivery, the full restoration of the chapel and the like for like repair of the West Front roof. Both projects have taken some time to move into delivery, most notably because we have had to raise the £1million-plus ourselves to fund them. As part of the Chapel project, we will be inviting members of the public to get involved with ‘conservation in action’ and they will play an active role in the restoration. It will be wonderful to see scaffolding go up again and the restoration of this incredible site move a few more steps forward. Get ready to don your hard hats!

INTERVIEW t takes a brave man to walk around Leeds city centre in nothing more than a bathrobe and a shower cap but this is all in a day’s work for Chris Sylvester. This unique attire has become much more than a gimmick for Chris and a necessary part of promoting his social enterprise – Getting Clean – which supports those with addiction as well as the homeless community. Chris, who was born in Armley, launched the initiative in November 2021 after almost 26 years of active addiction that saw him experience many of the issues that he’s now helping people to overcome. Getting Clean is a bold, unapologetic '&%$#"!%&"' &'% % ' & # # % # ! %! # '&%$# #% # % & # Lived Experience Recovery Organisations (LEROs) across the UK. “These bars of soap reduce crime and grime at the same time,” quips Chris. “Our mission is simple: to ensure all addicts have access to peer support and

I was in this vicious cycle where I was destroying myself.” During those 26 years Chris experienced everything from prison and
institutions to homelessness and violence and much more besides. When the path to recovery presented itself, it was actually by accident. # & !&% hospital and needed to see my probation %!$ & ' & % # stop using and knew I was going to test positive and be recalled to prison.” When Chris arrived at the probation %!$ # % managed to get clean after being addicted to heroin after attending Mutual Aid # # % # same. “It sounded really attractive but it sounded like it was somebody else, not me,” he says. “But I agreed to go, obviously, to avoid going back to prison.” & ' #% # # %! ! # # $& # ' & % & # # # $& # # one of his old dealers. “He took me to one side and said ‘if you carry on using there’s three things waiting for you – prison, institutions and death’. Soap-making
Despite being convinced that there would be ‘nobody like him’, Chris was captivated by what he saw and heard, *)('(*&%$)%#"*%! #* % * * %')&% managed to clean himself up. “When [other members of the group] started talking about what was going on for them, and how they were feeling, it was such a relief,” Chris enthuses. “They were talking about how I had been feeling for years.” Recovery was a huge step for Chris and $) $ *&%"$ %# %' * #%'% % #$)(% homeless people and those with addiction. But he felt he could do more with his lived experience and so decided to get some of his friends together from recovery and set up his own enterprise. The group put conservation work at its heart, whether that was litter $ $)( % * $)(% % *'#$)(% $ & * % meadows. Basically anything they could do to improve their communities. * *% *&%$#% * ' *%$#%' *&% us to take the focus off sitting round in a circle and talking,” explains Chris. “Being out, being of service and making a difference allowed the conversations # % % "% *%)'# ' % "*% work we did showed that the people rebuilding their lives, after addiction, could actually rebuild communities and
challenge stigma. It became pathways to employment.” For the group to reach its full potential Chris realised they needed a regular income stream, fundraising – such as cycling the Leeds and Liverpool canal – could only go so far. That’s where the ' ' $)(% ' *%$) They started making it in Chris’s mum’s kitchen, evolved the recipe and then started selling it at craft fairs. The branding is clever; people soon bought into the concept – it was more than soap, it was hope. Five years on, Getting Clean now has its own 4,000 sq ft factory in Armley and produces eight different varieties of soap which can be bought at various outlets around Leeds as well as via their website. Fundraising still plays a part, hence why you might have seen Chris sitting in a bathtub in City Square for three days in August. The enterprise also recently took a team to the Recovery Games in Doncaster, which celebrates recovery through sport, teamwork and shared purpose and is part of September’s National Recovery Month. Getting Clean’s work hasn’t gone unnoticed and qualitative research from the University of Bradford has show that #"*$ %$)) '#$ *% ** *&% &* % $)( %

My life has become %*) $ "*& % % )&% * %$)% **#$)( %')&% I think, ‘how have I got here wearing a bathrobe and a shower cap?’” As far as Chris and Getting Clean is concerned, the sky’s the limit. They will continue to make soap, fundraise and promote their mission to ensure all addicts in the UK have access to peer support and employment opportunities. As far as second chances go, Chris’s story takes some beating.

PROMOTION which include strengthening, stretching, and training exercises to heal injured soft tissues and joints. The family business, which was started by Kathryn’s mum, Karen, in 2016 has made great strides during that time and last month celebrated its tenth anniversary. Kathryn joined in 2018. “We work alongside around six other practitioners, including podiatrists, a physiotherapist and soft-tissue specialists,” added Kathryn. “We also have holistic practitioners joining us, which we’re really looking forward to.” The business originally started out as Bawtry Foot Clinic in a room at Midlands Hairdressers and the venture has been such a success over the last decade that they now have six treatment rooms, two waiting areas and a large retail space in a former Natwest Bank on Bawtry High Street. There was a rebrand from Bawtry Foot Clinic to Bawtry Podiatry when they moved from Pinders Court in October the care and services provided. “We’re still built on the same foundations: providing the best possible care for our patients, offering a personal service and making sure everyone who walks through our doors feels welcome,” added Kathryn. “Our aim has always been to look beyond one isolated problem and consider the whole person, so having different practitioners working together allows us to offer a much broader approach to health and movement.” Prevention has been key to Bawtry Podiatry’s success and Kathryn encourages regular appointments so that they can identify changes early, offer advice and hopefully prevent minor concerns from developing into painful or recurring problems. “Our feet support us and play an essential part in keeping us active and independent, but they are often overlooked until something becomes painful,” explained Kathryn. “You don’t necessarily need to have an existing podiatrist. It could simply be an annual ‘foot MOT’ to check that everything is healthy, answer any questions and provide advice about footwear, skin and nail care or changes you may have noticed. “The ultimate aim of podiatry is to help people remain pain-free, mobile and able to continue doing the things they enjoy.” Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered, Bawtry Podiatry

Despite being part of a larger group, San Carlo Leeds retains an air of indviduality, writes Richard Abbey. s we take our table at San Carlo in South Parade in central Leeds, there is a little card explaining that even though the restaurant is part of a larger group – with 23 venues in eight UK city locations as well as abroad – each venue retains its own identity. Although menus are shared, each restaurant has its own front of house and kitchen teams, lending an air of individuality. This was certainly evident in Leeds. Much of this personality comes from the front of house staff who are incredibly attentive and welcoming but you can see it in the plates of food too, which are anything but run-of-the-mill. We’d been to the South Parade restaurant before and every visit feels a little bit special. This occasion was no exception. Greeted by affable Vito, who attended to our every whim, we were treated to three courses of superb quality food as well as great wine in the most impressive of settings. If you’ve not been to the Leeds city centre restaurant before, bright yellow awnings are a sure sign you’ve arrived and shelter a cosy outdoor terrace. right and then a large dining room with double-height ceilings, huge windows and lots of marble as well as yellow chairs and lighting. The space is littered with pictures of previous (well-known) visitors to the restaurant. The Italian restaurant clearly attracts a broad cross-section. The food and wine is distinctly Italian with a mixture of antipasti, pizza, pasta, After starting with some marinated green olives (£4.50) and sea salt, olive recommended a bottle of well-balanced Primitivo Passorano (£41.75) from Puglia to complement our ensuing courses. When it came our food choices we also took a cue from Vito, who was happy to recommend some of San Carlo’s standout dishes.

EATING OUT My chicken Caesar salad (£11.95) to start provided a light introduction to our meal and contrasted to my main course choice. Tagliolini all’Aragosta (£37.95) is San Carlo’s most famous pasta dish made with lobster, brandy, tomato, peas and a touch of cream. Served in a half lobster shell, it was presented beautifully and was rich, creamy with a hint of sweetness from the lobster and tomatoes. Tagliolini is narrow strips of pasta, not too dissimilar to linguine, and was the perfect partner to the luxurious sauce. My wife was swayed towards the Capesante al forno (£17.75) as a precursor to (£39.75). The roasted scallops to start were presented in their shells and %$#"! We also shared a portion of Zucchini frite and tenderstem broccoli with garlic and Dolci – again – came highly recommended and the contrasting Millefoglie (£8.50) and Torta settevelli (£9) didn’t disappoint. The layered dessert, made with Chantilly cream, $ $ %$#"! " chocolate and hazelnut cake had an almost mousse-like texture and was rich and bold and equally delicious. $ " $ " of limoncello and then a single espresso to ensure we left sated and completely $ " # $ "! # San Carlo still feels special and almost independent, it’s easy to forget it’s part of a group with a worldwide reputation but is testament to the hard work that goes on at each venue. San Carlo has recently launched its Christmas menus – there are set lunch (£49.50pp) and dinner (£57.95pp) options available as well as a special Christmas Day menu (£97.50pp). But the restaurant is more than a place for special occasions and offers great value for money too. Their lunch menu, served Monday to Friday 12-4pm, offers two courses for £22.95 and three for £28.95. If you’ve got any shopping planned in the coming months, it’s the $ " Go on, treat yourself. FEATURE y his own admission, furniture maker Thomas Veryard ‘jumped in at the deep end’ when he decided to start his own business. Thankfully, he is a strong ‘swimmer’ and has gone to great lengths to ensure success over the last 12 months or so. At just 28 years old, running a business is still all quite new for Tom (he prefers it to Thomas) who designs and makes sustainable, solid wood furniture to order. Originally from Hertfordshire, Tom Katie, last year after securing premises at the Welbeck Estate in Worksop. It’s a city he knows well after attending the city’s Hallam University where he studied product design before switching to furniture design. His studio, a 45-minute

commute from home, is situated in the old walls of ‘The Tan Gallop’, built in 1860 by the Duke of Portland as an indoor racetrack to race his horses in bad weather. “I think I knew from an early age I wanted to be a designer,” Tom recalls. “In school, the best thing I did was make a coffee table but I didn’t think that was a viable job. I went into design thinking that’s what I what I would have to do. It wasn’t until after university I realised I could just go into making.” side, Tom really enjoyed working with his hands and enjoyed the making part much more and so, after graduating, took an apprenticeship with renowned Lincolnshire furniture designer Matthew Cox. He spent several years in Stamford
learning his trade before deciding to relocate back to Hertfordshire and set himself up as a sole trader. “I can design stuff and then make it whereas normally you’d have a designer and a maker – I wanted to do the whole thing,” Tom says. in St Albans working next to a metalwork designer, he set about building up his business and quickly secured commercial contracts to produce bespoke pieces for a number of East London hotels. But, in the building and Tom lost everything, including his tools, many of which had been handed down to him by his grandfather. As devastating as this was, a small

FEATURE insurance payout gave Tom the platform to start again and he decided to look further north and the familiar areas around where he attended university. The Welbeck Estate has 23 studios which are home to a community of artists, designers, makers and conservation specialists. They are operated by the Harley Foundation, a charitable organisation set up in 1978 by the Duchess of Portland who ‘wanted to encourage creativity in all of us’. After applying for one of the vacant spaces, Tom was accepted and moved in in July 2025. Although there was much work to do to get things up and running. “[The studio] was storage before, it was really damp, the skylights were dripping with water but it was once used as an
old ceramics factory so I could see the potential,” comments Tom. Once the space was water tight and cleaned up, the furniture maker had to replace his tools and source the machines needed to make the solid wood furniture he has now become renowned for. Describing himself as ‘an old man at heart’, and like the tools passed down to him, Tom looked to the past and managed to acquire English-made machines that were originally built in the 1940s and 1950s. Far beyond aesthetic reasons, there were practical reasons too, mainly down to the maintenance of them. “All the modern stuff, it’s all digitally based so if something goes wrong, I haven’t got a clue,” he explains. “These are simple, there’s few moving parts. Tom makes mainly freestanding furniture – tables, chairs and stools – which he describes as ‘contemporary traditional’. “It’s mainly using the idea of traditional furniture but it doesn’t look like traditional furniture, it’s all quite clean,” Tom acquiesces.
Everything is made to order and many of the pieces feature oversized elements or zig-zag designs that Tom likens to old French wine presses. “They’re turned like corkscrews,” he says. “I like a lot of Brutalist stuff and things that are oversized but am not really wed to a certain period or vernacular. But and never varnish and I try to keep it as sustainable as possible.” Tom points to a lovely dark wood table that has the ‘French press’ style legs as an example as well as three-legged chairs and stools, which have all been made to order. “I made the table for my house but couldn’t get it through the front door,” he laughs. Tom makes pieces for individual clients but has maintained commercial contracts and also displays at shows, which provide the perfect opportunity for him to market his business and network with like-minded people. He recently attended Collate Lobby in Shoreditch, which invited 30 UK-based designers to present their work inside an immersive hotel space. In a bit of a console table using metalwork and stone sourced from Derbyshire. As part of his residence at the Welbeck Estate, Tom hosts a workshop each year and this month will be inviting visitors to come and learn how to build a basic wooden stool. There are also a number of studio open days throughout the year that provide a real showcase into what goes on at The Tan Gallops. Tom describes Welbeck as a ‘community’ and has already made connections with many of the artisans on site. “It’s very collaborative,” he says. “If anyone needs help with anything there’s always someone willing to lend a hand.” Asked about the challenges he’s faced since setting up in North Nottinghamshire, he adds: “As a one-man band, there’s then you’ve got to deliver it. Where I worked before, I would make it, someone photograph it. I’ve got to do everything, which is fun but also a bit stressful!” But this challenge is also something Tom is immensely proud of. From setting up on his own to overcoming the and is doing what he does best – making really stunning solid wood furniture.

The Harley Open 19 September 2026 – 3 January 2027 The Harley Open 2026 features 138 artworks by artists, makers and heritage craft practitioners from across the region – including Tom. This year’s exhibition celebrates the breadth of creativity found within 100 miles of the gallery. Open actively encouraged applications from heritage craft practitioners and welcomed submissions of freestanding work, resulting in the most diverse exhibition in the event’s history. Alongside contemporary artworks including painting, photography and sculpture, visitors will discover works created using heritage craft skills, including more than 15 craft skills currently considered endangered or critically endangered in the UK. From canal art and clog making to oil painting and pottery, the Harley Open brings together artworks and objects that don’t typically sit side by side for an exhibition which celebrates making in all its forms. Bryony Bond, Director of the Harley Foundation, said: “It was a delight and a challenge to select artworks for this year’s Harley Open. With such a diversity of works, the exhibition will showcase some of the fantastic artists, makers and craftspeople we have in this region and the breadth and range of skills and creativity.” Visit www.harleyfoundation.org.uk

MAKING ART accessible to all
There’s a good reason why Ruth Stone’s customers have followed her loyally over the last 22 years - and continue to do so. hen Ruth Stone decided to relocate Limited 2 Art gallery to Retford in 2020, after being in Bawtry for 16 years, one of her biggest concerns was whether her many loyal customers would make the move with her. It may only be a short journey – just nine miles – but in a business sense, it can feel like much more. Thankfully, Ruth’s customers responded in kind and as well as following her to the premises at Bridgegate, she has also attracted hordes of new ones, not just from the local area “I was really heartened that so many of them followed,” Ruth said of her customers. “I’ve always believed art should be enjoyed and lived with. It doesn’t need to feel intimidating. We want people to feel inspired the moment they walk through the door.” Ruth’s passion, and this relaxed approach, has been a huge factor in retaining many loyal customers as well as the diverse collections on offer. Visitors to Limited 2 Art can explore an impressive range of original paintings in oils, watercolours and acrylics, alongside
