NS: Nirva feels like more than a drinks launch – it feels like a cultural statement. Where did it begin?
Paul Young: “For me, there is no future without a story. Brands can’t just ask what they sell anymore – they have to know why
Young explains that Nirva was born at the intersection of three seismic shifts: tequila’s premiumisation boom, the rise of low-andno alcohol, and the explosion of RTDs. After years of running a branding agency with his lifelong friend and creative partner Ross – Nirva’s co-founder – the pair recognised a rare white space in the market.
“We’d been watching tequila for years. In Europe, perceptions were changing fast. People were beginning to understand that premium tequila is one of the cleanest spirits – naturally sugar-free, carb-free, and

With Ibiza as its spiritual compass, Nirva embraces contradiction beautifully: meditation and music, stillness and celebration, ritual and release. Multi-platinum singer/songwriter Dermot Kennedy will embark on his largest headline tour to date in May and June, playing Leeds’s First Direct Bank Arena on 2 June. Known for his passionate and powerful live performances, Dermot has graced the stages of such iconic venues as London’s O2 and New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The shows will feature favourites spanning Dermot’s discography, including new album The Weight of the Woods, along with new material.

The stage adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption comes to Leeds Grand Theatre this spring, starring Joe McFadden, Ben Onwukwe and Bill Ward.
The acclaimed stage adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption, based on Stephen King’s 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, comes to Leeds Grand Theatre from 19-23 May 2026.
Adapted by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns and starring Joe McFadden in the role of the wrongly convicted Andy Dufresne, Ben Onwukwe as inmate Ellis ‘Red’ Redding and Bill Ward as the corrupt prison warden Stammas, this thrilling staging examines desperation, injustice, friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum-security facility.
Joe McFadden ponders: “It’s such a well-known story and he’s such an iconic character, and some might say that’s foolish to take on.” Joe smiles. “But it feels like a really good challenge for me as an actor, and I do like a challenge.”
Written by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns, the play is based on Stephen King’s 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which featured in King’s Different Seasons collection and starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. McFadden is a huge fan of both the surprises in store for theatregoers who are only familiar with the big screen version. “There’s lots in it that they’ll know from the movie,” he points out, “but it delves deeper into the novella and offers something extra. It’s a brilliant script, so saying yes to it was a no-brainer for me.”
The story starts in the late-1940s, when - despite protesting his innocence - Andy is incarcerated at the notorious Shawshank facility and soon learns that no one can survive alone. So he strikes up an unlikely bullied into subservience by Warden Stammas when the latter exploits his talents for accountancy.
ostracises himself from the other inmates, then realises he has to adapt. But he keeps in an immoral, dark and dangerous place. He’s a really intelligent guy who uses his brains to work the system.”
Asked if he has anything in common with the character, McFadden laughs. “I’m probably not as clever as he is, but I do have a moral compass. He uses his skills for the
himself, and he’s someone we can all aspire to be like. It’s a story about hope in the darkest of places, and we could all do with a bit more hope and optimism in our lives.”
Glasgow-born Joe came to fame on TV in Sex, Chips & Rock n’Roll and as PC Joe Mason in Heartbeat and Raf in Holby City. The latter was a particular highlight because: “I got to really explore a character for four years and I love it when where you’re with a company of actors and you get to know each other well. It was the same with the cast and crew on Heartbeat.”
Then there was the 2017 series of Strictly Come Dancing, which saw Joe and his professional partner Katya Jones take the Glitterball Trophy. “Looking back, it was a really intense, rewarding, challenging and brilliant time.” He laughs again. “I’m not sure I would want to do it again ever, but I’m really glad I took part when I did.”
McFadden has done lots of theatre, including recent tours of The Rocky Horror Show and The Mirror Crack’d, and says: “Good theatre shouldn’t only be in London. There are so many beautiful theatres around the country and audiences are

different wherever you go. And with The Shawshank Redemption it’s important to spread that message of hope and optimism around the UK.”
Elder inmate Red is played by Ben Onwukwe, whose 30-year stage career has seen him playing leading roles with the RSC and the Royal Court and who is best-known to TV audiences as Recall McKenzie from London’s Burning.
production’s 2016 tour and was originally drawn to it because, like Joe, he sees it as a story about hope. “The word ‘redemption’ is right there in the title,” Ben notes. “Most prison dramas are pretty grim, but this one is also about humanity - where in this
have some goodness within them.
“With Red, he made the most disastrous mistake in his young life - a mistake that was so brutal that it led to three deaths - but he’s made his peace with his crime and the fact that he’s having to pay the price for what he did. He’s a fascinating character and I love that I now have the challenge of playing him again with an entirely different cast.”
As in King’s novella, he describes Red in the play as “an observant, intuitive and empathetic observer of people”. As to why people are drawn to prison dramas, Onwukwe feels: “All of us have or have had wicked thoughts. I’ve got four siblings, all of them girls, and when I was young I’d think about doing things like twisting the necks of their dolls to get my own back. As you grow up, hopefully you suppress those kind of thoughts, but prison dramas show us people who have succumbed to them. There’s a ‘There but for the grace of God...’ element to that.”
has been hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time. “And rightly so,” the actor feels - as does Bill Ward, who plays Warden Stammas in the stage version.
growing up,” Bill says, concurring with his co-stars when he adds of the theatrical adaptation: “It’s a beautifully-written play about hope emerging from darkness. It has so many other compelling themes, like brotherhood, love and resilience.”
Stammas is an amalgamation of three characters from the novella. “So he’s a really multi-faceted personality,” Ward continues. “He’s ruthless at his core, but he has ways, means and tactics for getting what he wants. He can be very charming and charismatic. He’s not a one-note, nasty piece of work who you can see through immediately. A lot of the time, on the surface, he appears to be quite reasonable quite a lot of the time, but actually what he’s doing is being extremely manipulative.”
should come and see the play, he feels: “You and to walk in Andy’s shoes as he makes this very moving journey, which is a very uplifting one but which has some massively tricky road bumps along the way.”
Ward’s numerous TV credits include stints as Charlie Stubbs in Coronation Street and James Barton in Emmerdale. Of the former he laughs: “It seems so long ago now, and I have done so much since then, but people remember him because he was such a foul individual.”

Tucked away in the northern suburbs of Leeds, York Gate Garden is one of those rare places that manages to feel both intimate and inspiring. At just one acre, it’s not a garden you visit for sweeping vistas or grand scale. Instead, it’s a masterclass in what can be achieved with thoughtful design, careful planting and an eye for detail, something that resonates particularly well with anyone working in the industry.
Created by the Spencer family from the 1950s onwards, York Gate has long been
in the country. Today, it is owned and cared for by Perennial, and that connection gives the garden an added layer of meaning beyond its obvious horticultural appeal.
Frederick Spencer purchased York Gate in 1951, when it was essentially a house surrounded by farmland. From those humble beginnings, the family, most notably Frederick, his wife Sybil and their son Robin, developed a garden that would and gardeners.
Robin Spencer, in particular, brought a strong design vision to the space, drawing inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement and gardens such as Hidcote in Gloucestershire. The result is a series of ‘garden rooms’, each with its own identity but carefully linked through a sequence of views, focal points and transitions.
It’s this sense of progression that makes York Gate so engaging. You’re constantly being drawn forward – through hedged openings, around corners, along narrow paths – with just enough revealed to tempt you into the next space.
Despite its size, it never feels cramped. Instead, it feels purposeful.
Spring is one of the most rewarding times to visit York Gate, and right now the garden is coming into its own.
Bulbs are at the heart of the early season display, with drifts of tulips bringing bold colour into the structured framework of the garden. These are complemented by emerging perennials and fresh foliage, creating that unmistakable sense of renewal that only spring can deliver.
The herbaceous borders are just beginning to gather momentum, and for those with a professional eye, this is a particularly useful time to visit. You can clearly see the planting structure, how the layers are built, how the spacing works and

how the Spencer’s planned for succession later in the year.
Elsewhere, the meadow area starts to wake up, offering a softer, more naturalistic contrast to the more formal garden rooms. Wildlife follows quickly and the garden begins to hum with activity.
And then there are the details, something York Gate excels at. Topiary forms are crisp and architectural, pathways are framed with precision, and every junction seems to have been considered. Even at this early stage in the season, the underlying structure is doing a huge amount of the work.
its layout. The garden is divided into a series of distinct garden rooms, 14 in total, each with its own character and planting style.
There’s a real lesson here for grounds teams and designers alike. Rather than relying on scale, York Gate uses enclosure and contrast to create impact. Yew and beech hedging form the backbone, allowing each area to feel self-contained while still contributing to the overall journey.

Standout areas include the herb garden, with its clipped forms and strong geometry – recently replanted so still in its infancy; the white garden, which showcases a more restrained palette; and the meadow walk, where the planting loosens and the mood shifts.
It’s also worth noting how effectively hard landscaping is used. Features such as the tall sundial, arbours and focal structures are never overbearing, but they anchor each space and guide the eye.
For professionals, this is where York Gate really earns its reputation. It’s not just about what is planted, but how everything is put together.
Following Robin Spencer’s untimely death in 1982, his mother Sybil continued to care for and develop the garden, ensuring its character and plant collection were maintained.
When she passed away in 1994, the garden was generously gifted to Perennial, with the intention that it would continue to be enjoyed, studied and appreciated by future generations.
That gift cannot be understated. York Gate is not just a preserved garden; it’s a working example of a particular style and approach to design, maintained with sensitivity to its origins.
Ongoing restoration and conservation work ensures the garden remains true to the Spencer family’s vision, while still functioning as a contemporary visitor attraction.
For those in the industry, the role of
Perennial is the UK’s only charity dedicated to supporting people who create our green spaces, whether that’s in gardens, parks, sports grounds or the wider landscape sector. It provides
to individuals and families who may be
What makes York Gate even more special is that every visit directly contributes to that work.
The garden was gifted to Perennial not only as a heritage asset but as a means of generating income. Funds raised through ticket sales, plant purchases, the café and the gift shop all go towards supporting the charity’s services.
In other words, a day spent at York Gate is doing more than just topping up your inspiration levels, it’s actively helping to support those in the industry facing challenges.
That connection adds a real sense of purpose to the visit.
York Gate is often described as a ‘hidden gem’, and while that may be true small.
For designers, it’s a study in spatial planning and cohesion. For gardeners, it’s a source of planting inspiration and practical ideas. For grounds teams, it demonstrates how structure and maintenance underpin everything.
And for the wider industry, it stands as a reminder of the people behind the landscapes we care for.
There’s also something refreshingly accessible about it. Unlike larger estates, the ideas here feel transferable. You can walk away thinking not just “that’s beautiful”, but “I could use that”.
York Gate’s reputation isn’t just industryled, it’s backed up by consistently strong
visitor feedback. Reviews on Tripadvisor
travellers’ favourites, with York Gate recognised as a Travellers’ Choice award winner in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. That puts it in the top ten per cent of attractions worldwide, no small achievement for a one-acre garden.
There have also been some notable developments this season. York Gate is now a Royal Horticultural Society Partner Garden, meaning RHS members can visit free of charge on Fridays (conditions apply, so it’s worth checking ahead). The garden also accepts Gardeners’ World 2-for-1 entry, adding further accessibility for regular visitors.
In terms of planning a visit, the garden is open from April through to October, typically between 10am and 3.30pm, with admission set at £10 per person. It’s a visit that tends to linger long after you’ve left.
At this time of year, York Gate Garden is full of promise. The bones of the garden are clearly visible, the planting is beginning to build, and the craftsmanship
of the design is on full display. But perhaps what makes it truly stand out is the combination of artistry and purpose. It’s a garden that rewards careful observation, offers genuine professional insight, and quietly supports the very people who keep our green spaces thriving. And that, arguably, makes it one of the most meaningful visits you can make this season.

Enjoy a weekend of classic cars, open gardens and - hopefully - some sunshine at Gringley-on-the-Hill’s biennial charity event.
ringley Open Gardens & Classic Cars 2026 takes place on Sunday 7 June and is a much-loved community event that takes place every two years.
Past events have attracted over 2,000 visitors from across the local area, including Bawtry, Gainsborough, Lincoln and Doncaster. Not only can they enjoy beautiful private gardens open across the village but also see a large display of classic cars, motorbikes and tractors, as well as live music, food, Pimms, tea and cakes.
The event is entirely volunteer-run and raises funds for St Peter & St Paul’s Church in Gringley, Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, and other local charities such as Gringley Toddlers group and Scout group.
standing event organiser Hugo Dunkley.
Tell us about Gringley Open Gardens & Classic Cars – how did it start and when?
Gringley village has been running Open Gardens for more than 30 years. However, cars were added in 2007, and were exhibited in the paddock of a village property. By 2017, the number of cars became too large for that venue, and the event was transferred to the Gringley
of the combined event.
How long have you been involved yourself?
I have been involved since the early 1990s when the gardens-only show was much smaller. Each year it has got larger and we have to limit car entries to 300.
And it takes place every two years? Yes it takes place every two years on the even numbers. It’s too much of a logistiical thing with volunteers to do every year. Just to give you an idea it requires over 100 local volunteers to put on.
Where does the event take place?
Other events are located round the village. All visitors are given an event programme which shows the various locations. There are usually 4-6 open gardens.
In terms of the classic cars, are there any special models to look out for this year?
This year’s early entries feature an impressive line-up of classic Jaguars, including a Mk VII, an E-Type and the legendary XK120. Alongside these, visitors can expect a diverse collection of classic vehicles, ranging from a striking Zakspeed Capri Tribute to the ever-faithful Land Rover Series I. We usually attract250-300 cars and already have over 200 registered.
What else can visitors expect?
Live music, tractors, beer tent plus an event in the pub and local church is doing a kids’ board games café, street food, cake stalls, Pimms stalls, great atmosphere great people.
What have been the event highlights over the years?
In the 2024 event, the Red Arrows kindly years the Retford Steampunk visited the show, which was much appreciated.
What’s been your biggest challenge?
Managing over 2,500 visitors in a small village like Gringley presents a lot of challenges. Two buses provide a free service round the village connecting the car park with the various event locations, congestion.
And what about tickets?
Tickets are £6 if you buy in advance via https://wegottickets.com/event/690658. Price on the gate on the day is £7.50. Both include free parking.
Gringley Open Gardens & Classic Cars 2026 takes place on Sunday 7 June 11am4pm at Gringley Playing Fields, DN10 or email gringleycarshow@outlook.com.

is Spinal
Spinal stenosis is a term used to describe narrowing of the tube carrying the nerves to the spine that gives rise to symptoms of compression of the spinal nerves or sometimes the spinal cord. Compression of the nerves can cause back or neck pain. Compression of the spinal cord can cause balance issues and recurrent falls.
Spinal stenosis is quite a common problem, particularly with older people, although it can affect younger people as well.
In younger people, the compression is often from a bulging disc whilst in the elderly the compression is generally from
wear and tear of bones and ligaments. Typically, symptoms manifest as leg pain (sciatica) in younger patients, while older patients often present with gradually reduced walking distance.
Common Causes
• Disc herniation (generally in younger patients)
• Bone or ligament wear and tear and thickening (generally in older people)
• Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one vertebra slips forward over the one below causing narrowing of the spinal canal
• Tumours involving the spine
• Injury or fractures
Treatment options
In symptomatic patients with spinal stenosis, surgery is considered when all conservative measures been exhausted. The compression can be removed either by a Laminectomy (where the thickened bone is removed) or via a Discectomy (where the compressing disc is shaved). This can improve patient’s symptoms,

And the experience doesn't stop there. Our kitchen has unveiled an exciting new menu, bringing bold new flavours alongside the beloved classics that have made Sukhothai a Yorkshire institution for over two decades. Indulge in luxury oysters, a showstopping seafood platter, and succulent river prawns - dishes crafted to be savoured, shared, and remembered.
Since 2002, Sukhothai has been woven into the fabric of Yorkshire life, a place where Thai tradition meets genuine Northern warmth, where celebrations become lasting memories, and where the finest Thai cuisine has found a proud and permanent home in God's Own County. That spirit remains at the very core of everything we do.
A
new era of Thai fine dining has arrived in the heart of Leeds
Our flagship South Parade restaurant has been beautifully transformedstunning new seating, intimate new lighting and artworks, and an elegant new bar area that sets the scene for an unforgettable evening.

Same warmth. Same heart. A beautiful new chapter.

Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration held on 5 May to celebrate Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. History aside, it provides the perfect excuse to indulge in some of Mexico’s favourite dishes.

A Leeds favourite has had a makeover. Graham Clark visits the newly-revamped Sukhothai on South Parade.
must have walked past the Sukhothai Thai restaurant on South Parade in Leeds city centre many times without realising what hidden culinary temptations were hidden behind the unassuming entrance.
South Parade is not necessarily a road you would walk along in Leeds especially if you were looking for a quality restaurant in the city centre, Greek Street which runs parallel due south to Sukhothai is where most people’s attention is diverted to when dining out in Leeds.
What a dishonour it would be though not
to experience this stylish restaurant which has recently reopened after a stunning and sympathetic refurbishment.
The relaunch marks a new chapter for the South Parade restaurant, which has been part of the Leeds dining scene for over 13 years, while the wider Sukhothai brand celebrates its 24th anniversary this year.
As part of the makeover the entire upstairs dining area has been redesigned creating a more atmospheric and intimate setting for guests. The new look includes a transformed bar area with high- top
seats, updated lighting and new booths and seating areas.
Ban Kaewkraikhot, Executive Chef and Owner of Sukhothai, said: “When we opened Sukhothai in Chapel Allerton in 2002, my dream was to bring real Thai
ingredients and the feeling of eating in Thailand. That’s something that has always stayed at the heart of what we do. With the brand turning 24 this year, and Sukhothai Leeds city centre turning 14, it felt like the right time to give the site a refresh and create somewhere even more special for
our guests. We’ve made it more intimate, more beautiful, but still very much Sukhothai.”
Whilst the new refurbishment is impressive that alone would not entice most diners to visit the restaurant - the main reason naturally being the food.
new menu served alongside the traditional favourites that have made Sukhothai one of the best restaurants in Leeds for Thai food. Menu highlights include new additions such as Khao Soi, a coconut yellow curry noodle soup originating from Northern Thailand; Massaman Short Rib - tender slow cooked beef in a rich, aromatic curry with potato, roasted peanuts and warming spices and new seafood additions including Gung Maw Nam Pao (river prawns), a popular Thai grilled seafood dish

served with traditional seafood dipping sauce, fresh oysters with traditional Thai condiments and a new Seafood Platter with soft shell crab, crispy squid and grilled prawns.
My Poh Piah Gai, Thai style homemade
mixed vegetables and glass noodles, served with sweet chilli sauce was a harmonious mix of sweet and spicy
main course
My partners Satay Gai - one of the signature starters at Sukhothai was a good combination of savoury and aromatic
on the side. The copious starter was enough to be shared with each other.
The Gang Massaman Thai Curry is believed to have originated in southern Thailand though you do not have to travel that far to enjoy this sumptuous dish; a rich and creamy coconut curry made from turmeric, star anise and cinnamon, with peanut, carrot, potato and onion. I chose beef as my meat though you can have might remind you of an Indian curry though the mildness here was more like a gentle kick as opposed to a sharp knock.
My partners choice of Gai Sukhothai came as a specially created dish of crispy

sliced chicken breast, stir fried with spring onion, chilli, tomato, peas, served with a

tastebuds though there are more eastern delicacies such as exotic mango and sweet sticky rice and banana fritters.
My Chocolate Fudge Cake was an indulgent multi layered offering served with ice cream, a guilty pleasure indeed that had just the right amount of chocolate so not to be overpowering. My partner made a good choice with the Lemon and Ginger Cheesecake which cleansed the palate after her main, a tangy and zesty slice provided the trick.
Service throughout was excellent, impulsive yet not obtrusive. Within three minutes of being seated we were served table water - always a good sign of the

level of service.
Good food, superb service alone make Sukhothai a restaurant that should be on your radar add to that the new refurbishment and you have a little piece of Thailand right here in Leeds.

ay is proving to be a buy month for Reverend and the Makers frontman, Jon McClure. Fresh from releasing the band’s eighth album, Is This How Happiness Feels, the band have announced a national tour starting in November, which stops in Leeds on the 16th
For Jon, it was one of his toughest albums to make and was delayed following his father’s passing but is one he’s incredibly proud of.
“It makes it sound all doomy but it’s not, there’s only one song that’s really about that, it’s quite joyful really,” he said. “I love it, I think it’s brilliant, I’m really proud of it. It’s variations on soul music, I think that’s the thing that links it all together, which funnily enough is the music my dad enjoyed.
“We’ve had a real renaissance in the last few years. I’ve been doing this a long time. The awareness of the band seems to be at an all-time high. I’m grateful for that.”
But music hasn’t been Jon’s only focus over recent months; as well as managing his viral sensation brother Chris (aka Steve Bracknall) and playing in a role in the Dayfever daytime discos (although he’s now taken a back seat) he’s also – perhaps his toughest gig yet.
But before you think that this is maybe his ego running away with him, we can categorically say that this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Jon is part of a consortium who have
world’s oldest. He maybe the frontman – a role not too uncommon to him – but he’s working alongside David Bianchi, Alexis Krachai and Andrew Ford under the banner of IAV Holdings Limited. Together they will be working alongside current majority shareholder, Jeremy Levein to drive the club forward.
“We very deliberately set up a company with complementary skill sets,” explained Jon. “I’m a creative person and my strength is ideas. The trick here is to put a team around me who can bring those ideas into being.
“Alexis is going to be the CEO, he will sort out the internal mechanisms of it. Andrew Ford is going to try and sort out the land complications. Dave Bianchi is going to try and connect us with a bunch of enablers and help bring into being some of the ideas I’ve got for the club.”
As well as improving things on and off the pitch, one of the most important tasks facing the group is to tell the story of how the game originated in the city – a story

still unknown to many parts of the world.

two members – Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest – formed the Football Club.
The inaugural meeting of the club took
a greenhouse on East Bank Road lent to them by Thomas Asline Ward, father of

Creswick and Prest were responsible for drawing up the club’s rules of play, which were decided upon at the club’s AGM on 21 October 1858, and published the following year. They were referred to as
Jon, and the wider group, feel that
more and there are already talks regarding possible TV documentaries, e-sports clans, football festivals and more to cement the city as the true home of football.
And of course there’s the desire to

return the club to the city limits – they have been playing at the Coach & Horses
a current open planning application at Meadowhead and they will also be working alongside the council and other partners to explore various alternatives.
“The USP of this club is so unique,” enthused Jon. “There are only two clubs on the earth that have got the FIFA Order this.”
The close season will allow Jon and the consortium to implement many of their plans so they can hit the ground running
with album promo, festival appearances and then a tour is anyone’s guess.
But one thing’s for sure, he will try his best to make it all work. It’s fair to say he’s done pretty well so far.
Is This How Happiness Feels is released on 8 May. Reverend and the Makers play Leeds Beckett University Students Union on 16 November.
