Peace, love & cycling EDINBURGH BICYCLE COOPERATIVE CELEBRATES 45 YEARS IN BUSINESS. orty-five years ago, three friends shared a love for all things cycling and decided that together they would set up a workers’ cooperative. Their names were Chris Hill, Gerry Murray and Morag Ogilvie and they believed in a fairer way of doing business. Founded in 1977 as a single shop in Edinburgh, “Recycles” was born and later renamed as Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative; a company where the workers had an equal say in the business, and profits would be shared equally among the employees. Almost half a century on, Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative now comprises five shops across Scotland and northern England, including Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Newcastle, and Leeds, but their founding principles remain the same. After working with the Bike Coop for a year, each employee is invited to become a member with an equal share in the business and a vote at their AGM. This shared business model is what has ensured that the Bike Coop has stood the test of time and continues to be a great company to be a part of. The UK’s longest running bike cooperative is known for a lot of firsts, including being the first in Scotland to stock mountain bikes back in 1984, launching one of Europe’s first cycle shop websites in 1996 and more recently

This dream will do ‘NATIONAL TREASURE’ JASON DONOVAN RE-TREADS FAMILIAR GROUND AS THE PHARAOH IN THE LATEST PRODUCTION OF JOSEPH... HE SPEAKS TO NORTHSIDE. oseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat arrives in Leeds this summer and sees actor Jason Donovan return to familiar territory. It was after the Australian star rose to fame in Neighbours, and then the pop charts, that he turned his attention to the stage, taking the lead role in the production originally created by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. This time he will be playing the Pharaoh in this latest instalment and will be

supported by Jac Yarrow, who will be playing Joseph, and Linzi Hateley as the narrator. The musical will run at Leeds Grand Theatre from 12-23 July following two triumphant seasons at the London Palladium.The multi-award winning show has been performed in over 80 countries worldwide and has become one of the world’s most beloved family musicals. We caught up with Jason Donovan to find out more.

Is Joseph as much fun to perform in as it is to watch?

Absolutely. It’s such an uplifting show and it feels relevant to the world we’re living in right now to a certain degree, since it’s about overcoming adversity and having self-belief. It’s part of this country’s DNA in a way and this tour is the West End production put into local theatres so it’s a version of the show many people won’t have seen before.

This is your third go-round as Pharaoh. What keeps pulling you back in?

There’s so much history with Joseph for me and I was originally asked about recreating the role of Joseph himself.That didn’t come to fruition for a number of reasons and trying to recreate what I’d done in 1991 all these years later with me in my 50s was a bit of a non-starter anyway. But I was keen to be part of it and when the opportunity to play Pharaoh came along I took it without thinking too much about it. It sort of works, you know? The song comes in Act Two and it’s a bit of a show-stealer. Because of my association with the show I think it only increases the value of that moment and makes it more powerful.

I wouldn’t say I’m in top physical condition but if I’m going into town I’ll ride my bike and I try and get in a swim and a steam each day. I’m also a bit OCD so I’m always cleaning the house. Going up and down the stairs is enough to keep the fitness levels up to a certain degree.

for me was Priscilla Queen of the Desert [in 2009]. It was such an incredible production and they spent so much money on the bus, the set and the costumes. There have been certain times in my career where I’ve looked around and gone ‘Wow! I’m in a different league here! This is as good as it’s gonna get’. The Rocky Horror Show was another good one. There have been some dodgy ones too but [laughs] we won’t talk about those.

Jac Yarrow plays Joseph now. Having originally played the role yourself, how do you rate him as a performer?

Looking back on your early pop career, what were your highlights from that time?

He’s a very well-polished performer. He’s incredibly talented and he’s a great singer, and he’s got a lot of energy. It’s a different show to the one I did back in the 90s. It’s hard to compare the two and it’s hard to compare the two of us as performers, but he’s a great guy and I think the innocence and the spirit of Joseph is not only in the character but also in the person who is playing him. I’d like to think that back in the day I had my feet firmly on the ground and that I had the country behind me when I did that show. And I think Jac is a very humble and good person, which is the sort of personality the role requires.

It was a dream come true for me to have a number one single in this country, the year’s biggest selling album and to be meeting people I’d looked up to. I think you create your own luck in life but I was in a TV series that was massively successful so luck is one thing but timing is also really important.With the success of Neighbours I was looking towards other things and at the time I was watching what Kylie was doing because I was always fascinated by pop music. I saw what she was doing and I said ‘I’d like a bit of that’. Then Stock Aitken Waterman came along and off it went. I think once people hear a song that’s sort of the soundtrack to them growing up - like Too Many Broken Hearts, Especially forYou and Any Dream Will Do, which are my three biggest hits - it becomes part of their lives.Those songs to this day are keeping me alive and

You’re still in fantastic shape. What’s your regime?

You’ve done lots of musical theatre since the nineties. What have been your favourites?

ultimately I think that’s why singers want pop hits because they never leave you. When were you last on tour and what are you most looking forward to about getting back out there with Joseph?

I did my own Even More Good Reasons tour before Christmas and I had a few more dates to finish in recent weeks. But Joseph is my first time touring in a theatrical sense in a long time and I think it’s great the show is getting out there because it’s such a fantastic production. I miss being at home but the good thing about this particular show is that I’m not going to be stressed out too much because I don’t have lots to do in it. I’ve spent years doing shows where you drag yourself in for the matinee and it’s like ‘Off we go again’. It’s sometimes a hard slog but I don’t feel anxious about this one. I’m enjoying it because I’m not exhausted by it. It’s a win-win for me. Did you ever imagine you’d become a national treasure in the UK?

No because in Australia America is a bigger part of our entertainment sphere. Coming to Britain was never part of the plan as such but it quickly became the plan. estival season returns in earnest this year. After two years of Covid-affected events, 2022 should see a big return to normality – as much as it can – which is great news for music fans. Glastonbury’s back, Leeds and Reading will be going ahead again but while the ‘big’ festivals may grab the headlines, you’ll struggle to find a better value-for-money line-up than at Sheffield’s Tramlines. Sam Fender, Kasabian and Madness take the top slots on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively and will be joined by the likes of James, The Vaccines, Sigrid, Self-Esteem, The Wombats and Becky Hill. And there’s more. Sheffield’s biggest city-based music festival recently announced its latest additions to the lineup – and it looks like festival-goers are in for a treat. Joining the headliners at the already sold-out event in Hillsborough Park will be Bad Boy Chiller Crew, Lady Leshurr, Alfie Templeman and Kelis. They’ll be joined by Crawlers, Bleach Lab, Baby Queen, The Clockworks and Elvana. Comedy will also be making a return to the festival, which takes place between 22-24 July, with a huge line-up including headliners Jason Manford, Russell Kane and Seann Walsh. Timm Cleasby, Tramlines operations director, said: “After the amazing spirit that everyone brought to Tramlines 2021 and how the team delivered an amazing festival in challenging times, we’re all back working hard to make 2022 better than ever. A Tramlines lineup wouldn’t be complete without a solid injection of Sheffield’s finest. For 2022, crowds can expect homegrown sets from Jon McClure’s Reverend and The Makers; Self Esteem (aka Rebecca Taylor formerly of Slow Club); Little Man Tate in their highly anticipated return since their farewell in 2009; and arguably one of most attended performances of the entire Tramlines weekend,The Everly Pregnant Brothers who’ll bring the power house of parody, charm and sing-a-long vibes. High Club are a 4-piece new age indie band who have become firm Tramlines favourites since debuting in 2019. Luxury Goods are the new incarnation of LIO and have just announced a Leadmill show in December whilst Sheafs are riding high following their debut EP ‘Vox Pop’ in 2020. August Charles is a fantastic new vocalist from Doncaster who made his Tramlines debut last year as a winner of the ‘Apply to Play’ competition. Tramlines has settled into its new home in Hillsborough Park - this will be the fourth event held there - and this year’s site will have five stages of music, a family-friendly area and a genrespanning line-up of performers including everyone from internationally-acclaimed acts to grass roots talent. 2022’s event - the 13th edition of Sheffield’s biggest party - takes place following an exceptional event in 2021, where the festival took place as part of the Government’s Event Research Programme. The sunshine has also drawn me out to various bars and restaurants in central Leeds, which is currently undergoing a renaissance of newness and innovation. First up, Green Room has proven to be the perfect spot for alfresco dining and cocktails. They recently debuted their brunch menu, which was created by Grön Kafe. It’s loaded with temptation, but standout dishes for me have to be the Sweet Potato and Halloumi Hash, and the vegan pancakes, stacked and coated in cinnamon sugar with Blueberry compote, coconut yogurt, fresh blueberries, mint, biscoff crumb and maple syrup, trust me – they’re so good! They’ve been packed since launching last

As you’d expect from Home, it was an ultra boujee affair, with eight perfectly orchestrated delicious courses, each complemented with next-level premium wine. The food was unforgettable beautifully presented and full of exceptional flavour combinations. If you’re looking to wow a date or celebrate a special occasion, this place is a must. Just when you thought that Chapel Allerton couldn’t get any better, Rudy’s Pizza announced they were launching their next restaurant right on my doorstep. I’ll be dropping in to soak up the vibe, before heading to my go-to Harrogate restaurant, West Park. The food is consistently brilliant, and their terrace is one of the best spots to soak up some rays. Speaking of gastro pubs, Harrogate residents will be pleased to know that the Coach & Horses pub is undergoing a major reinvention. The beloved venue will be retaining its traditional heritage, whilst boasting a revamped bar and new first floor dining room with amazing views of The Stray, as well as a delicious gastro pub menu. Watch this space for my review. And after all the over indulging of food and drinks you may want to

consider hopping on over to RYDE to work off those calories. This all-new boutique studio is heading to East Parade very soon, offering clients the chance to work up a major sweat with Spin, Barre and Yoga classes to a backdrop of beats,

The GYS Stage will be hosted by Yorkshire television presenter Christine Talbot in a chat show style with a different celebrity each day. All celebrities will then meet fans after their interviews in a meet and greet zone. Christine will be welcoming the likes of TV host Matt Baker MBE,Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen and Peter Wright of The Yorkshire Vet to the stage, which is being sponsored by Daniel Thwaites. Matt, who grew up in the Durham Dales on his family’s sheep farm, will be on stage at the Great Yorkshire Show on Thursday 14 July. His love of the countryside and animals made him the natural choice for fronting such shows as Countryfile, One Man and His Dog, Animal Rescue Squad, Secret Britain, Big Blue Live and of course the hugely

This is a very special year for the Society, with 200 Shorthorns cattle coming to the Showground to celebrate the 200 years of the Shorthorn Breed. The Tuesday will be the celebration day of the breed with a celebration parade in the Show rings, awards, and special presentations. Wednesday evening there will be a celebration dinner held in the Pavilions of Harrogate and on Thursday the National Show of Dairy Shorthorns will take place. Charles Mills Show Director said: “We are honoured that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will be visiting the Great Yorkshire Show and I shall be proud to accompany her throughout. This will be a very special year for the Shorthorn breed and a what better way to mark the anniversary than with a visit from their patron and a wonderful Royal visitor.” The farming and countryside showcase is expected to welcome 35,000 visitors a day over the four days to see competitive classes, ranging from cattle to international show jumping to cheese. The event features a host of country skills, such as fly fishing, and an extensive Food Hall showcasing regional produce. The Great Yorkshire Show became a

four-day event after a raft of changes were implemented at the 2021 show due to Covid-19 regulations. For the first time ever, there will be Sheep Dog Trials taking place twice a day in the Main Ring with competitors from the UK’s four home nations taking part – England, Scotland Wales and Ireland. There will be Junior and Senior Semi Finals taking place from Tuesday to Thursday, culminating in a Championship on the Friday. The trials are being organised by the International Sheep Dog Society which holds national and international trials every year and a World Trial every three years. Chairman Ian Fleming said: “Showcasing the characteristics of a good working dog is always a delight for the handler, and a pleasure to watch. “The ISDS is delighted to join the Great Yorkshire Show with our National Champions from 2021 and some of our young handler talent for this premier event. This July, Leeds’ iconic Tetley building will play host to Rolling Social Events’ first ever Leeds Tequila Festival. ow is it July already? Here at Leeds Cookery School we are scratching our heads wondering where on earth the time has gone. We are however, pleased that it’s still asparagus season. We are a big fan of this veg because it’s just so versatile. This is our recipe of the month which features this fantastic vegetable. Leeds Cookery School is a cookery school with a conscience because 100 per cent of their profits go to a charity called Zest who help disadvantaged communities in Leeds. Dish of the month Yorkshire Asparagus & Summer Vegetable Risotto Ingredients 100g Arborio or carnaroli rice 20g butter 20ml Yorkshire rapeseed oil 1 shallot, diced 50ml dry white wine 300ml vegetable stock (boiling) 1 bundle Yorkshire asparagus 50g fresh peas, podded 50g fresh broad beans, podded ½ teaspoon flat leaf parsley, chopped ½ teaspoon oregano, chopped ½ teaspoon chives, chopped 20g freshly grated Parmesan cheese Salt & pepper

Method 1. Prepare the asparagus by bending the stalk at the base to make it snap. Lay the top half of the asparagus on a flat surface and peel away from the last leaf of the tip toward the base carefully. Use the peelings and woody stems in the vegetable stock. 2. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil. Add the prepared asparagus and cook for two minutes. Remove and plunge the spears into ice cold water (this will stop the cooking process and keep them a vibrant green colour). Do the same with the peas and broad beans. When cold drain the asparagus, beans and peas. 3. Cut the asparagus into 1cm long pieces. Remove and discard the husk from the broad beans and set them aside. 4. Heat the butter and oil in a large heavy pan. When the butter has melted, add the diced shallot and gently cook for two minutes. 5. Add the Arborio rice and cook for two minutes, stirring the rice until it is coated and has become translucent. 6. Pour in the white wine and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the rice has absorbed the wine. 7. Gradually add the hot vegetable stock, a little at a time, waiting for each quantity to be absorbed before adding more. Stir continuously with a spatula. 8. After 20-25 minutes the rice should be tender and creamy. 9. Add the beans, peas and asparagus, mix in gently. 10. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, add the chopped parsley, oregano, chives and the Parmesan. Mix well. For extra decadence drizzle with aged balsamic and authentic truffle oil.

hapel Allerton. Home to a vibrant community of independent venues offering everything from natural wine and speciality coffee to spicy delights, artisan cheeses and more. This leafy suburb’s newest foodie resident is De Baga, a Goan restaurant promising a modern take on traditional cuisine served in an elegant, nostalgic setting. Its first branch opened in Headingley back in 2019, and I head down one warm Thursday evening to find out how it fits into the buzzing Chapel A scene. We pass the quiet outdoor seating areas of the Mustard Pot, Dapur Malaysia and Black Market as we make our way to De Baga, which has taken on the former home of The Pit and BOX on Stainbeck Lane. As a sucker for foliage and festoon lighting, I’m immediately charmed by the restaurant’s exterior, where around ten tables welcome guests to dine a la carte. Friendly staff greet us warmly, and we look on to see other guests receiving the same welcoming treatment. Inside, the restaurant is both cosy and quirky, with a range of neon signage and a spacious dining area transporting us into a fun yet relaxed atmosphere. We peruse the menu and order two of the recommended beers – a Bombay IPA (£5.75) and a Delhi 6 Lager (£4.95),

both made by local brewery, Pivo 44. Coming in at just 3.8%, the lager makes an excellent session brew, and I can tell straight away that the IPA will be a great accompaniment to food. Other drinks choices include several local beers from the likes of North Brew Co and Kirkstall Brewery, as well as cider on tap (£4.95) and a range of spirits and mocktails all at around £5.50. Wine drinkers are looking at anything from £19 to £75 for a bottle, with a solid selection including plenty of organic and vegan choices. We saw several rounds of shots going out too – not my first choice to accompany the cuisine on offer, but maybe I’m missing something by not opting for Patron with my curry. Who knows. We turn our attention to food, studying the menu’s multiple sections at length to make our choices.There are nibbles, chaats and veg, meat or seafood starters, as well as biryani dishes and a vast range of mains, sides and desserts. An appealing Sunday roast option also offers up lamb shank and masala fries, so I make a quick mental note to return at the weekend, and ask for our server’s advice on how to curate the meal at hand.We opt for Sev Puri – crispy puff pastry filled with sweet potato bhaji and chutney, which we eat as directed (in one mouthful) to experience an incredible burst of flavour. A great choice to munch on as you look through the menu. Chilli Fry Mankios (£5.95) – calamari with bell peppers, mango, basil and chilli

– catches our eye from the ‘nibbles’ section, and arrives as a hearty salad alongside the Baar Baar Cornetto (£3.95), a playful dish consisting of smoked aubergine and soft cheese. This one didn’t quite cut it in the flavour department, but made for good entertainment at the table! Not one to go halves, I top off our starter selection with Murgh Chakori (£7.50), which comprises chicken infused with charcoal mist and served with green mint sauce. When it comes to mains, we’re keen to try everything – from the lamb shank curry we’ve spied on Instagram to the sea bass dish calling our name from the middle of the menu. We sample the Apora Bazaar mocktail (£5.50) as we ponder, and enjoy the refreshing hit of fresh pineapple and coconut. Finally – struggling to pick – we turn once again to the waiter, who recommends the Tamso Nâlachi Kadi (£18.95), a red snapper curry with a deliciously rich, tomato-coconut sauce. We also choose Galinha Cafreal à (£14.95) – a chicken dish with influences from Mozambique and Portugal. This one doesn’t have quite the knock-out flavour as the snapper, but still made for an incredible addition to our meal. Accompaniments come in the form of Spiced Rice and a Smoked Cheese Chilli Naan (both £3.50) – perfect for mopping up the sauces. Fullness forces us to pass on dessert, but the selection boasts something for everyone – from Mango Delice, Matka Kulfi and Coffee Ras Malai (all £5.95) to Pineapple Flambe (£6.95). Overall, De Baga is brilliant – a

surprisingly large restaurant with a great crowd, friendly staff and reasonable prices. After seeing it buzzing on a Thursday night, I’m confident that history will repeat itself and diners will continue to flock here for a taste of delicious Goan cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere. Its own claim of ‘fine-casual’ dining might be a paradox, but we’ll certainly be back – bringing all our friends and family with us. Savour the journey YOU CAN EMBARK ON A GLOBAL CULINARY TOUR AT ALEXANDER’S, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. ike many bars and restaurants, Alexander’s of Skipton has experienced a fair amount of upheaval over the last couple of years.The shifting sands of the pandemic created a wave of uncertainty but, thankfully, things are on a firm footing once again. New head chef Trevor Hambley is already putting his stamp on the High Street venue, working alongside chef consultant Stephanie Moon, whom you may have seen on the BBC’s Great British Menu, to develop a brand new range of menus. These launch in July and will cover everything from brunch and afternoon tea to dinner and Sunday lunch. New dishes will sit alongside old favourites and will still draw on a global larder with flavours coming from the Mediterranean, MIddle East, Far East and even Hawaii. It’s an eclectic menu but one which suits all palates.

“Things have finally started to settle down,” said owner Susannah Daley. “Hopefully the worse of the pandemic is behind us, we’ve now got a settled team and the new menu is starting to take shape. We’re very excited for the summer and beyond.” Alexander’s is owned by Skipton-based Peel Entertainment whose background is in providing entertainment to industries such as hotels and cruise ships. Susannah set up the business 25 years ago but always wanted to put down permanent roots with a business that drew on her travels and the Grand Tours of old Alexander’s fits that bill perfectly. They bought the building, which is located opposite the church, just over five years ago. A seven-month refurbishment brought its own challenges - all rubble and waste had to be removed via the canal as there is no road access -

but allowed them to add an extension to the rear of the Grade II-listed property as well as a stunning tiered terrace which backs on to the Leeds-Liverpool canal. The worldly theme of the menu is mirrored in the decor of the building. Step in off the High Street into the tiled Parlour and you’re met with a superb example of Edwardian elegance. From there you can head through the pewter bar - home to signature cocktails, craft beers, fine wines and more - before arriving in the restaurant which has fulllength windows overlooking the heated outdoor terrace. The restaurant is all palm trees, leaves and flowers - a bit of the outside, inside - and has an almost colonial quality. It’s a lovely bright space that manages to be comfortable and classy at the same time. Step outside, down the steps and you’ll find yourself in the ‘Secret Garden’ an

ideal spot for private parties or celebrations. We arrived a little earlier than our pre-booked time with the hope of taking advantage of the early evening sun by having a drink on the terrace. Thankfully there was room and we had aperitifs of Paulaner beer (£4.90, pint) and Mombasa strawberry gin (£4.25 + £2 Fever Tree tonic) before taking our table inside. My two children enjoyed glasses of apple and orange juice (£2.50). After a lengthy chat with owner Susannah and new manager Michael, we were encouraged to try a selection of their most popular starters - who were we to argue? Soon arriving at our table were plates of seared treacle beef fillet, caramelised onion purée, roast and crispy onions, sticky jus (£12), halloumi bites with harissa and cranberry relish (£8), Lebanese flatbreads with tzatziki and houmous (£9), Crispy chilli beef, spring onion, coriander and puffed noodles (£11), and black pudding fritters with curry aioli (£7). Perhaps predictably we all had our

favourites. My children loved the crispy chilli beef, my wife the beef fillet and myself, I loved the simpleness of the black pudding fritters which just scrumptious with the curry sauce. For mains I can’t speak highly enough of the Indian-inspired Yorkshire lamb rump (£27), which was served with Rajasthani red lentils, cauliflower pakora, pickled red onion and cucumber. It was well cooked, blushing pink with crispy skin and paired well with the gutsy spiced lentils and zingy vegetables. The pakoras were excellent too. My wife was equally enthused with her duck breast dish which came with confit leg bonbons, roasted root purée, pak choi and a star anise jus (£23). The Asian flavours were just delicious. Children are well catered for at Alexander’s and the Little Explorers menu (£8 for two courses and a glass of fruit squash) was great value. Both the sourdough margherita pizza and grilled chicken and bacon burger were excellent whilst the mini chocolate sundaes they chose for dessert would have sated even the most ravenous of adults.

By the time we reached dessert, my wife and I were feeling the pinch a bit so decided to share one of Alexander’s gelatos - a You’re Off Your Nut-ella Ambassador (£11) which was crammed full with praline gelato, nutella, Ferrero Rocher, caramelised hazelnuts, whipped cream and wafers.Very indulgent but heavenly. Alexander’s is a stunning venue with food to match. The service throughout our visit was exemplary and we were made to feel very welcome. The atmosphere is very relaxed but there are flashes of quality that make it feel that bit more special. All day appeal THE INTRODUCTION OF A WEEKEND BRUNCH MENU HAS STRENGTHENED THE OFFER OF THE DEER PARK, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. runch has become very de rigeur over recent years and can be enjoyed everywhere from cafes and delis to hotels and restaurants. As far as locations for mid-morning dining go, you’ll be hard pushed locally to find a better venue that The Deer Park on Street Lane, particularly when the sun is shining. When we arrived around 11 o’clock on an especially warm and bright Saturday morning, patrons were already spilling out onto the terrace tucking into a variety of tempting dishes and drinks. Brunch is a relatively new addition at The Deer Park and adds a further string to an already substantial bow that already includes all day dining menus, a spectacular Sunday roast menu as well as a wide selection of beers, wines and cocktails. The popular pub is part of Mitchell and Butler’s ‘Premium Country Pub’ portfolio where the ethos is on quality and style, which is not just reflected in the food and drink on offer but in the decor too. From the sweeping marbleeffect bar and stylish crockery to the contemporary furnishings and glassware you can’t help but be impressed by The Deer Park. Coupled with the welcoming service, it’s easy to feel at home as soon as you step through the door. Despite the gorgeous summer we neglected the opportunity to dine al fresco but instead took a table in the conservatory, which offered the best of both worlds. With the windows drawn back, it had the feeling of eating outside but with added comfort. Brunch is available 9-11.30am Saturday and Sunday and features a familiar blend of dishes, from traditional breakfasts and sandwiches to pastries and egg dishes. There’s a large selection of hot drinks and juices or you can take the opportunity to take things up a notch with a cocktail - Bloody Mary or Espresso Martini (all £8.75) anyone? - or even a glass of Möet & Chandon champagne (£8.95). Juices - apple and orange - were more than adequate for my children and I to start with but my wife threw caution to the wind with an Aperol Spritz (£8.75).

Well, it was the weekend. I also had a very good cappuccino (£3.10). Food-wise I couldn’t look past the egg dishes and was impressed with my final choice of Eggs Royale (£8.75), a winning combination of poached eggs, smoked salmon, English muffin and hollandaise. Beautifully presented, the eggs were cooked just right, complete with runny yolks, with a generous serving of smoked salmon and a very well-balanced hollandaise sauce which had just the right amount of tang and creaminess. Eggs at The Deer Park are also served Benedict (ham) or Florentine (spinach) style or can be simply scrambled. Across the table my wife tucked into a dish of chargrilled chorizo, avocado, spinach and poached eggs on sourdough (£8.50). Again, the eggs were cooked just right and well complemented by the smoky slices of chorizo sausage and fresh-tasting avocado slices. Whilst The Deer Park were still awaiting delivery of the children’s menus, all brunch dishes can be presently made as smaller portions ideal for little ones, although given the sizes of the plates that arrived, they would have satisfied even the most generous of appetites. Both my children option for a traditional

breakfast which came with eggs (fried for her, scrambled for him), bacon, sausages, flat mushrooms, tomato, hash browns and beans. Oh, and two slices of toast too. Much to my surprise, and annoyance, they ate almost every bite. After indulging in such a hearty brunch, if you’d like to walk some of it off afterwards (as we did), The Deer Park is perfectly placed to explore the 700acre Roundhay Park and Tropical World nearby. Leeds city centre is just a short drive too and can be accessed via the A58 or A6120 ring road. If The Deer Park is just out of commutable distance, it has two sister properties - The Fox in Menston and The Pine Marten in Harrogate - where the brunch menu has also been launched. first came to England from his native Poland in 2006 he started working at the Malt Shovel as a kitchen porter. Keen to pursue a career in catering he progressed through the ranks before leaving and gaining experience throughout the Harrogate area under some renowned chefs. In 2017 he returned to the Brearton pub - this time as owner. The Malt Shovel is everything you’d expect from a quaint, 16th-century country village pub and restaurant. It has rustic charm in abundance, the comforting roar of an open fire (when the weather calls for it), stone floors, wood panelling and oodles of character. It all adds to the heart-warming atmosphere. Marek runs the pub with his wife Monika and prides himself on a menu

which features classic, hearty dishes made with the produce from the local area where possible, though there is no compromise on quality. Marek bakes every day and his pies are a speciality - the steak and ale is hugely popular - and he claims to offer one of the ‘best Sunday roasts in Yorkshire’ - it’s so popular you have to book two weeks in advance. We’d arrived midweek and were pleased to find a welcome break from city living. Brearton is a small village, just three miles north of Knaresborough. There are no shops here, just around 40

houses and a single pub – The Malt Shovel itself. There are several dining spaces, allowing for guests to sit with plenty of space between tables.We were seated at a cosy table by a fire in one of the smaller rooms, with the rest of the building comprising the bar area plus two other equally authentic spaces.There are fresh flowers, fireplaces and historic pictures of Knaresborough throughout – all contributing to the relaxed, authentic vibe. The wine menu is substantial, boasting 12 whites, 13 reds and three rosés, plus four sparkling options and a dessert wine. We opt for a couple of beers as we peruse the food menu – a pint of Theakston Best for me and half a Rudgate South Pacific Ale for my partner. The recent resurgence of cask ales has brought some hearty flavour back to the taps for many pubs, and I’m pleased to enjoy the nostalgia of a proper pint next to a roaring fire. Nothing beats it.

When it comes to food, the menu is small but well-balanced, laid out in traditional starter-main-dessert format. The specials add an extra three dishes to choose from, making for a foodie line-up featuring everything from pub classics (think Deep Fried Brie and Chicken Liver Pâté) to more inventive options like Whitby Prawn Popcorn. We start with the Whitebait (£6.80) and Bang Bang Salad (£6.90), followed by the Cajun Fish (£16.50) and Holme Farm Venison (£21.90) – a selection that gives us a good balance of tradition and innovation. The whitebait arrives lightly breaded and in its own bowl, with a side salad and homemade tartare sauce for that classic tanginess. As for the Bang Bang Salad, it’s a towering serving of crispy chicken doused in sweet chilli and peanut sauce and sitting atop a bed of lettuce and spring onions – absolutely delicious, with the nuttiness adding a subtle umami edge. Our waiting staff are attentive, coming over to take our wine order and stoke up the fire before our mains arrive. I choose a large glass of Marek’s personal favourite, the Prunus Dao Tinto, while my partner selects a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Our mains arrive, and like the starters, the serving sizes are nothing short of huge – in keeping with the pub’s promise of ‘proper’ portions. Despite this, we’re blown away. The Cajun Fish is essentially two haddock fillets stacked, perfectly spiced and served with a huge salad. There are thick-cut onions, garlic mayonnaise, a pile of crispy fries and a sense of simplicity that allows the fish to shine through. The venison arrives with a boat of mash plus plump green beans, braised red cabbage and a miniature saucepan of jus on the side. It’s cooked just to my liking – melting in the mouth and complemented by the savoury creaminess of the mash and freshness of the steamed green beans. I set aside some of the jus for the fries, which we enjoy dipping in until it’s all gone. Feeling fuller than I can remember, and revelling in our distinguished Friday night at this incredible pub, we lay our cutlery down and consider our options. Not one to do things by halves, we decide to share the Sticky Toffee Pudding (£7.50) – a soft, light sponge bathed in thick caramel sauce served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a giant strawberry balancing on top. Add to that a double espresso and a couple of After Eight Mints as we leave, and you’ve

got a stunner of a meal. As the cold hits us on the way out, our hearts are still sipping wine by the fire in this hidden gem close to Harrogate. This place is perfect for walkers and explorers (but be aware of their no-dogs policy) in search of well-cooked grub or a belting Sunday roast. They have a 4.5 out of 5-star rating on TripAdvisor making them one of the top-rated pub/restaurants in the Harrogate/North Yorkshire area.
