The church hasn’t been used for Christian worship for three decades, they’re rumoured to have been replaced by Satanists who use the site for animal sacrifice. The young woman’s bag falls off her shoulder, she thinks nothing of it and returns it to its place. It isn’t until Abby Thompson watches footage back, that she realises her bag was in fact, lifted from her shoulder and thrown to the side. The act of a spirit. Abby was in the graveyard of St Boltoph’s – or the demon church has she calls it- with other members of the NP Paranormal, a group of paranormal investigators from Sheffield who have completed 150 paranormal investigations since the group was started by David Newton and Karl Porter two and a half years ago. Both David and Karl had a keen interest in the paranormal, and went along to a ghost hunt in Derby Gaol – the old jail- just to see what it was like. From then on, both caught the bug for paranormal investigations. “We both really enjoyed it and thought we could do it on our own, so we decided to build our own team,” said David. “We got some hoodies and some caps made up, created a page online and just got out and about. We’d find out where to go, turn up in the middle of the night and start investigating.” Today, the NP Paranormal team is made up of David, Abby, who has been with the group a year, and newest member Darren Harwood. “We try and keep a small team, because if you have too many people you’re more likely to get noises, and

you don’t know if it’s paranormal or a person scuffling” It’s important to keep their investigations as quiet as possible because the main tool used by NP Paranormal are electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) recorders, which are similar to dictaphones, but highly sensitive and able to pick up any sounds that may have been made by ghosts. As well as the EVP recorders, NP Paranormal’s ghost hunting kit includes a host of gadgets that can help capture the spirit world. “It’s theorised that ghosts are made up of electromagnetic fields, everything is theory, nobody really knows.” Said David. “We use an EMF detector, which only goes off when you put it against something electrical. So if that goes off when we’re in the middle of nowhere, we know it’s nothing to do with us.” The team also use a motion detector, similar to a burglar alarm, which scans a two to three-metre radius. “The amount of hits we get with that is unbelievable. We have to turn it off after a while because it makes us jump too much.” At inside locations the team use laser grids, which project laser beams onto a wall, and lets for the investigators spot any shadows walking past. Temperature gauges are also used, because spirits are thought to take the form of very hot, or very cold air. All of NP Paranormal’s investigations are live streamed online, amid allegations the team’s work was fake in their early days. “People can watch and live chat on the forum, they can see what we see straight away,” said David. “They know we’re not faking it, they can experience it too. Sometimes they see or hear stuff we don’t, it’s like another tool.” A lot of the time, the ghost hunters won’t hear or see anything, but notice signs of spirits when they review their footage – either hearing EVPs or seeing unusual shadows on film. One livestream viewer, a medium from Oklahoma called Vanessa Hogle, helps the
group remotely. The group tell her the location they are investigating and she gives them information that may help. On one visit to Wardsend Cemetery, Owlerton, Vanessa told the group that somebody buried in the graveyard had died during a lobotomy, from a spike in the head. “We asked the question ‘has anybody had a lobotomy?’ and we got an EVP saying ‘it hurt’.” Said David. “Absolutely brilliant, top class EVP, you can’t really fault it.” Another spooky session was hosted at Roche Abbey, Maltby, when the group caught a spirit on camera. “We started hearing knocks and thought someone was in the woods, we checked around and nobody was there.” Said David. “Then a few minutes later we heard a ping, it was a stone being thrown at one of the tripods, from the opposite direction of where we were stood. We thought it was a bit strange, then we heard some taps, noises and groans, by this time we were a bit freaked out.” “When we watched the footage back it looks like a white cat runs across the bottom of the screen, that was pretty cool.” Other haunted spots the team have investigated are The Old Queens Head, Pond Hill, the abandoned Firth Brown Medical Centre, off Carlisle Road, and private houses in the city. They also travel the country on the hunt for spirits and have investigated Derby Jail, which is owned by Most Haunted’s Richard Felix, Fountains Abbey, Ripon, and have recently visited Buxton Lineworks. Despite a few moments when the group have left a location after hearing a sinister laugh on their voice recorders, the spirit world has never caused any harm to the group. “We’ve done a lot and never had anything jump out at us like you see in the movies, it never actually happens.” Said David. After seeing the interest their online streams generated, NP Paranormal started to host public investigations, under the name Archangels, taking the public to some of the city’s most haunted spots.

Crystal Peaks wins Britain in Bloom gold for fifth year running Crystal Peaks shopping mall has won the prestigious Britain in Bloom Gold Award for the fifth year running. And there’s a double celebration this year as the centre was also awarded the discretionary Yorkshire Rose Commercial Award. The shopping centre was nominated in recognition of its commitment to improving the bio-diversity of the land around the site and its full range of environmental campaigns. The judges said: “The management team fully understand the benefits of the landscape and are working on ways to improve not only their site but work with the local community to give something back.” There was special mention for the Crystal Peaks bee hives, situated on the roof of the complex and a local source of nectar and pollen. There was praise too for the Crystal Peaks gardening team and their work on seasonal displays and also commendation for the way the centre has worked with organisations like Sheffield City Council, the Landscape Trust, Sorby Natural History Group and neighbouring schools on the meadowland project and the ongoing cleanup up of the nearby Ochre Dike.
Davis Cup trophy comes to Graves Health and Sports Centre The newly developed Graves Health and Sports Centre treated Sheffield families to a fun filled day of free tennis and the opportunity to have a photo with the famous Davis Cup Trophy. Activities involved a morning and afternoon session of mini and junior tennis for 4 – 16 year olds and cardio tennis for the adults. Attendees were also treated to a doubles exhibition match played by the centres very own coaches Sam Salt and David Sherwood, paired with junior player Joseph Newman-Billington, who ranks in the top 10 in the UK, and 2016 Sheffield and district champion Josh Gledden. The event was attended by over 35 families many of which enjoyed tennis for the first time.
Halloween fright nights at the Tropical Butterfly House For the first time in the Tropical Butterfly House’s history there will be two Halloween Fright Nights going ahead this Halloween. Taking place on Saturday 29 and Monday 31 October, from 6:30pm – 10pm; visitors will have the rare opportunity to see the Butterfly House at night, making the ghoulish tractor trailer ride extra spooky. Spooky crafts, face painting and pumpkin carving will be available in the Activity Centre, and for the energetic there will be a disco and fancy dress competition in the disco room. year, his wife June passed away from cancer. For John, this loss was a devastating blow – but the tragedy spurred him on to devote his life to helping others in need. A keen sportsman since childhood, John had developed a passion for race walking in the 1960s. Ever since, he spent most weekends taking part in races up and down the country, often raising considerable sums for charity in the process. After the loss of his wife and daughter, John dedicated every spare moment to these fundraising walks. Having raised thousands of pounds for various causes over the years, on his retirement at the turn of the millennium John decided to focus on one charity in particular, Macmillan. Since then, he has collected more than £350,000 for the charity – but the determined pensioner says he won’t stop until he’s reached £1million. In his green Macmillan outfit, with wig to match, John looks quite the character. But his awe-inspiring achievements have won him personal recognition too. In 2012, he was voted by the people of Sheffield to be a torchbearer when the Olympic torch relay passed through the city. A year later, he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list. Co-written with RMC’s Adam Kay, ‘Distance No Object’ tells these stories and many more. Small SUV The Q2, Audi’s smallest SUV to date, is now available to order priced from £22,380. Something different Classic looks Following the announcement of the forthcoming Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato back in June, Aston Martin has now revealed the Volante version. Or to put it another way – the convertible. Zagato is an Italian coachbuilding firm and they’ve collaborated with Aston Martin to design exquisite-looking cars for nearly 60 years, starting with the DB4 GT Zagato race car in 1960. As with the coupe, the convertible comes with a 6.0-litre V12 naturally aspirated engine producing 592hp, which is good for a top speed of 200mph, and can achieve the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.7 seconds. The only difference between the coupe and the Volante is the Volante doesn’t come with Zagato’s infamous double-bubble roof. But I’m sure you’ll agree, this is one fine-looking machine.
