ith the EU referendum coming up at the end of June, the property market is reflecting the air of uncertainty in the country this month. Due to the unpredictable nature of the referendum, and the consequences either decision could have, some sellers are holding off putting their property on the market whilst others are keen to sell up before the vote takes place. This means there are fewer homes on the market, but those that are for sale could be bought for a lower-than-average price. Equally, while the referendum has deterred some buyers from searching for a new home until a decision has been made, bargain hunters have been taking advantage of the slight price slump. Regardless of politics, buying or selling a home is a complicated process and it is important that you look for an estate agency offering a comprehensive service with agents you can trust. Online and hybrid agencies are on the rise and charge cheaper fees but do not offer the same extensive packages that high street agencies have traditionally provided. With more traditional agencies you receive a high quality service from agents local to the area, who know the most effective methods of advertising your home. Although online advertising is important in the digital age, there are still great benefits to advertising in newspapers and estate agent’s windows, and most buyers and sellers still prefer to deal with a person rather than a portal on the internet. It is important not to rush to buy or sell property in the lead up to the referendum. By choosing a high street agency, you will be able to discuss the latest market changes with their team to find out what is best for you. Using an agency that offers a no sale, no fee option is also recommended at times of uncertainty because it protects your money if you choose not to sell. The specialist expert advice offered by high street agencies is invaluable and you should take advantage of their local knowledge when it comes to learning how the results of the referendum will affect the property market in your area.

DWP volunteers get down and dirty Employees from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) spent a day volunteering in the Shire Brook Nature Reserve. The work was part of the Community 10,000 voluntary programme, which is the DWP’s commitment to delivering 10,000 volunteer days a year from its staff. The groups spent time widening paths, dismantling redundant fences and preparing timber.

Forty cyclists from Haybrook estate agents have raised £70,000 by cycling from Cardiff to Colchester. Half the group did the full Cardiff to Colchester journey whilst the other 20 cyclists completed two different legs, one from Cardiff to Bath and another from London to Colchester. The money raised will pay for terminally ill children and their families to visit Disneyland Paris later in the year.

Swimmers gear up for a new event at Rother Valley The Amateur Swimming Association is hosting a new mass participation open water swimming event at Rother Valley Country Park The 1,500m Challenge is part of the new ASA National Open Water Festival. Charity ball is back After the success of last year’s event, the Sheffield United Community Foundation is hosting a charity ball on 24 June. JUST ENOUGH? Is this all the car you could ever need? Jordan Cutforth test drives the new Land Rover Discovery Sport.
A
s soon as the great Maurice Wilks drew a sketch of his first ever Land Rover on a beach in Anglesey back in 1947, he knew he had a winner on his hands, but he couldn’t have envisaged just how great the Land Rover name would have become. Fast-forward nearly 70 years and the Land Rover brand is as successful as it’s ever been. Just look at all the products they have to offer: you can have a utilitarian option in the face of a Defender; a super luxurious choice in the guise of a Range Rover; or a style icon in the form of an Evoque. But there’s a recurrent theme that spreads throughout the entire range: they can all tackle impeccably challenging terrain in a manner which would shame many other offerings from differing manufacturers. The Range Rover – Land Rover’s flagship model – is a perfect example of what makes Land Rover the company it is today. The Range Rover is most certainly one of the most luxurious cars on sale, couple this with its world class off-roading capabilities and what you’ve got is arguably one of the best cars in the world. Its all-round sense of capabilities caters for one’s every need and it does so in a classy, un-ostentatious way.

This brings me neatly onto the car which you see in the pictures above: the Land Rover Discovery Sport. In one way this car is a replacement for the old Freelander, a high-riding, semi-luxurious utilitarian 4x4 with enough go anywhere skills to impress the national army. Yet on the other, with its curvy understated chrome exterior, plush interior and sevenseat layout, it’s not a direct replacement at all. Along with the name change and with starting prices holding a heavy premium over the old Freelander, it suggests the Disco Sport is marketed as a more compact version of the larger Discovery. Yet if you specify a Discovery Sport with only five seats it becomes a more luxurious version of the Freelander. The car’s branding has caused many a confusing face as to its positioning within the company, but even so, could the Discovery Sport be that good that in theory it could be the only car you could ever truly need? Well, if it’s all down to the packaging, then the Discovery Sport will certainly impress. Firstly it has seven seats, something not entirely ground breaking or innovative there you might think, but what if we were to say that its barely bigger
than a VW Golf or Ford Focus. Now that is impressive. To make life a bit more bearable for the rear most of passengers, the second row of seating can slide 16cm forwards for more legroom. If you fold the two back seats down into the boot floor and slide the second row of seating all the way back this creates the same amount of space you’d find in the much larger Range Rover. How fantastic is that? And if you slide these seats forward (without folding them) you get nearly 1,000 litres of boot space. The inside though is where the car really impresses. It may not be as flash or as easy on the eye as the interiors you’d find on a Range Rover product, but the feel and quality of the car exudes an air of premium-ness that you simply cannot fault, especially on more expensive models with the Windsor leather package. It must be said that cheaper models are also equally as pleasant inside to. It’s a real pleasure to spend time in such an interior. You certainly won’t be disappointed at any price point in the range, that’s for sure. As with all Land Rover cars, all the switchgear is designed to be used while wearing gloves and the www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

smart uncluttered dash helps to keep things simple and stress free when on the move. It’s the little things that matter and the Discovery Sport nails them to a tee. The Discovery Sport comes with a good chunk of standard equipment. Items include heated front seats, part-leather upholstery, a ten-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, heated windscreen and Land Rover’s InControl infotainment system controlled by a dashboard mounted touchscreen. On higher priced models, you can have options such as parking sensors, panoramic sunroof, sat-nav, automatic lights and wipers, a 17-speaker surround sound system with subwoofer, and Land Rover’s clever dual-view screen where the passenger can be watching a movie whilst the driver is looking at the sat-nav. There’s even a function where the car can park itself as well as leave the space it just entered. So what’s it like to drive? Great is the answer. As you’d expect from an SUV, the steering is a talkative as Kimi Raikkonen and as feelsome as an anesthetised foot, but actually is suits the car well because it promotes a relaxed driving style. This doesn’t help on tight and twisty country lanes but it’s direct enough for you to place the car where you want it. This is also helped by a surprising lack of body roll for such a tall-bodied vehicle. Yes there is some lean, which is to be expected, but this just enhances the overall comfort of the car.
Some critics have stated that the ride is a touch firm when travelling at slow speeds and yes, compared to the competition, it maybe a little more on the harder side, but saying the ride is firm is far from the truth – you certainly won’t be complaining – but the car does feel more at home when cruising along at a reasonable speed. The new nine-speed ZF automatic gearbox fitted to our test car was an absolute triumph. It’s well worth the extra over the six-speed manual. The shifts are so smooth that you barely notice the change and when trying to set off or reverse on a hill it was never clunky nor did it roll on the gradient when engaging the clutch. Any negative points? Well the infotainment system was a little slow at times although the newer model will get the updated system found in the Jaguar FPace, running costs could still be improved, even with the new 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel under the bonnet (at best out test car achieved 42.0mpg with official figures suggesting 53.3mpg on the combined cycle for the 178hp variant), and prices can end up costing you over £50,000 if you aren’t careful. On the whole, the Discovery Sport is a truly fantastic vehicle; no wonder it has won accolades such as family car of the year. It’s the perfect car for middle Britain and as such it deserves a very big round of applause. It really is all the car you could ever want and need. Well done Land Rover. Well done.
MOTORING NEWS: Bringing it down a level
If you feel the full-fat AMG experience might be just a tad too much then don’t fear, Mercedes has you covered. Instead of the 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 found in the C63, Mercedes is offering buyers a 367hp 3.0-litre V6 motor known as the C43. Available in Saloon, Coupe and Estate body styles, the C43 with officially hit 62mph from rest in 4.7 seconds (4.9 for the Estate) and go on to a top speed of 155mph. All models come with a 4MATIC four-wheel drive system and a ninespeed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Standard equipment includes Artico leather, Dinamica microfibre upholstery with red stitching, 18-inch black alloys, black door mirrors and silver brake callipers with ‘AMG’ lettering. Prices start from £44,460.

Porsche has released an all-new version of their mid-engined coupe sports car. Unlike previous Cayman models, which came with riotous naturally-aspirated flat-six engines, this newest 718 iteration comes with two fewer cylinders – a flat-four ‘boxer’ unit. Like the previous generation of Caymans, there are two engine sizes to choose from. The standard Cayman comes with a 2.0-litre unit developing 300hp whereas the Cayman S gets a 350hp 2.5-litre motor. The Cayman sprints to 62mph in 4.7 seconds and 4.2 seconds for the Cayman S. Top speeds are 170mph and 177mph respectfully. Apart from the deeper burbling tone of the new exhaust, the new Cayman can be distinguished by new-look bumpers, as well as a change in interior design. Prices start from £39,878.

STEPS TO SUCCESS Joe Wicks has become an internet sensation but can he really make you ‘lean in 15’? Fiona Barber looks at The Body Coach’s online fitness and nutrition plan.

nless you’ve been avoiding all social media for the last year or so, you will have heard of Joe Wicks – AKA The Body Coach. This fitness guru became an Instagram sensation – he has 1.1million followers to date – by posting 15-second long videos cooking up healthy dishes that can be ready in 15 minutes under #leanin15. And, unlike many other diet plans, Joe’s 90-Day Shape, Shift and Sustain (SSS) diet and exercise plan is proving it is here to stay.
What is it? This online fitness and nutrition plan is designed for men and women of all fitness levels who want to get fit, burn fat and build muscle. This tailored plan has already helped transform the lives of over 100,000 people around the world since it launched in 2014. The plan costs £147, and those who sign up are sent a detailed questionnaire and asked to complete a food diary to get a
clear picture of overall health, nutritional history and lifestyle. Joe’s team use this to create a tailored calorie and macronutrient meal plan. The Body Coach also now has two cookery books out, so those who might not want to commit to the cost of the whole plan can get a taster of what dishes to cook and an education on what to eat when.
What do you get for your money? Recipes for over 100 tasty, easy-to-prepare meals including dishes you might not expect to find on a diet plan such as banana protein pancakes, build-up bagels, curries, burgers, and wraps. A new exercise plan is also sent each month, which can be done at the gym or at home, with minimal equipment. Training includes a combination of short HIIT (high intensity interval training) cardio workouts. How does it work? The whole idea of the 90 Day SSS plan is to fuel your body in the correct way and eat in line with your energy demands, which means eating differently on training days and rest days. Carbohydrates are used to refuel after exercise and fats are used as steady fuel for the remainder of the day, night, and on rest days. A training day consists of two reduced carbohydrate meals and one post-workout carb-refuel meal and

two snacks, whereas a rest day includes three reduced-carb meals and two snacks.
Steps to success Some of Joe’s top tips to succeed on this plan are: Plan – life will undoubtedly get in the way and you may not be able to follow the plan 100 per cent, but by planning meals and workouts for the week ahead you can minimise poor decisions – like ordering a 12-inch pizza because there’s nothing in the fridge (we’ve all been there). Writing down a meal plan will help you when you are out food shopping too and, most importantly, keep it realistic – if you can only manage to fit in three workouts then only include three in your plan. Prep – spend a couple of hours in the kitchen each weekend prepping meals for the week ahead. By cooking everything yourself you will know exactly what has gone into each meal and many of Joe’s recipes are freezer-friendly, meaning you can batch cook and then you don’t have to worry about faffing around making dinner when you’re tired after a workout. Stock up on essentials – if you aren’t big on home cooking, you need to invest in some much-needed tools and ingredients. Think food scales for portion control, containers to store your meals for the week, a decent wok/pan, and a refillable water bottle to make sure you stay hydrated. LAKES LIFESTYLE From gruelling hikes and outdoor pursuits to relaxing cruises and quaint villages, the Lake District has it all. Just make sure you’re prepared for all weathers. By Stephanie Burns.
T
he step-by-step map stuck to my sweaty palm said it would take 40 minutes to reach the summit of Wansfell Pike, and I’d be damned if I was going to miss that target. As my agile partner hot-footed it up the mountain like a graceful mountain goat, I quietly cursed my short legs and struggled to keep up. Thank God we hadn’t attempted Wansfell’s scarier neighbour, Scafell Pike. The only thing that kept me going was knowing that, once we eventually reached the top, the 360-degree view would be worth every gruelling step. The map told us to look out for the Yorkshire Dales and Morecambe Bay and I couldn’t wait to play spot the landmark while munching on my well-deserved Kendal mint cake. Of course, I should have taken into account the reality of our location. On reaching the top, we were met not with farreaching views of the North West’s beauty spots but rather a sky full of dark grey clouds and bitingly cold gusts of wind that threatened to send us tumbling right back down the gravelly path from whence we came. Ah, Great British weather, you cruel thing. We had begun our journey on that cloudy Saturday in higher spirits, with a trip on an open-decked Windermere Lake Cruise (£3.95pp one-way, www.windermere-lakecruises.co.uk) from www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Brockhole to Waterhead Jetty. From there, we’d set off through Ambleside, taking a minor detour to check out the hidden 70ft waterfall of Stockghyll Force, before scaling Wansfell and then descending into Troutbeck. We arrived back at Brockhole (www.brockhole.co.uk) four hours after setting off and, while there was much more to do and explore there, something even more appealing was waiting back at our hotel. We were staying on the outskirts of Kendal in a balcony room at the BEST WESTERN PLUS Castle Green Hotel (www.castlegreen.co.uk). Having planned to exert ourselves during the day, we had booked an early evening treatment at the onsite Green Rooms Spa. My full body Hot Lava Shell massage (£55 for 60 minutes) and my partner’s back, neck and shoulder aromatherapy massage (£32 for 25 minutes) were sheer luxury after the blustery walk. As the rain lashed down, I was even more grateful that we’d booked a table at the hotel’s Greenhouse restaurant that evening, too. The two-AA restaurant has recently undergone a £250,000 refurbishment and ranks 17 of 136 places to eat in Kendal on Trip Advisor. In the open theatre-style kitchen, executive head chef Justin Woods and his team cook up an impressive menu
of predominantly locally-sourced fare. We’d strayed further afield for our meal the evening before, to The Wheatsheaf Inn at Brigsteer (www.thewheatsheafbrigsteer.co.uk), winner of Food & Drink Pub of the Year at the 2015 Cumbria Life Food & Drink Awards. It’s been an alehouse since the early 19th century and has the rustic country pub feel down to a tee. We finished the trip in another quaint Lakes village, Hawkshead, and another pub, the Queen’s Head. I’d read that it was the prettiest village in the Lake District and it didn’t disappoint. Chocolate-box cottages, winding backstreets, a Beatrix Potter gallery and plenty of cafes and pubs made for a very pleasant spot to while away a couple of hours. That morning, we’d stopped in Kendal to poke around little lanes that make the old town a great place to explore. Among the independent shops, there are plenty of high street stores so if you forget your walking gear, you’re well covered. With my partner already talking of a Scafell hike at some point in the near future – that’s more than double the height of Wansfell at 3,309ft – I guess I’d better pull on my walking shoes again and get training. Well, if it means having an excuse to book in for another post-hike Hot Lava Shell massage, who am I to argue?

SET YOUR SIGHTS The Slovakian city of Košice is now just a short hop from Doncaster-Sheffield Airport and offers plenty for the city break crowd.
“
D
rinking is our national sport,” says my tour guide Slavo, half joking, as he drives me through the historical hot spots of Košice in a Škoda. I’m on an authentic Košice post-socialist tour, meaning I am getting a chance to see the real eastern Slovakia, from the colourful street art towering high above us on a block of flats, to an outdoor bar popular with students in the summertime. Having already visited one of many microbreweries, the wine region of Tokaj and been urged to try a flaming shot in restaurants, Slavo had a point. Hostinec is a craft beer brewery and bar based in the quaint, 13th century heart of the city. The bar is sophisticated but laid back, with wooden benches filling every nook and pint-sized steins. I was invited to take my stein on a tour of the cellar to sample the variety of ales and learn more about how they were brewed. If wine is more your tipple, Tokaj is only an hour’s drive away, south of Košice. Tokaj Macik Winery is a family run vineyard and winery that hosts wine tasting sessions in their candlelit cellars. As I sat amongst their many barrels, the owner explained that these cellars are 11 degrees (the perfect temperature for wine) all year round, which is why many buyers leave their bottles here to age gracefully and increase in value. Louis XV of France described Tokaj as, “the wine of kings” and after tasting seven
delicious wines, ranging from dry to sweet, it is difficult to disagree with him. My guides and I were then treated to a Slovakian speciality; duck, sweet red cabbage and lokša (potato-stuffed pancakes), which turned out to be the most delicious meal of the trip. Back in Košice, you’ll find plenty more opportunities to try Slovakia’s national dish; bryndzové halušky (dumplings stuffed with sheep’s cheese, served in a creamy sauce). Villa Regia is a country kitchen-style restaurant that serves halušky and many more traditional dishes, but if you want to
fully immerse yourself in Slovakian culture, kolibas (cottages) are a must. Whilst on an excursion to the High Tatra Mountains (Vysoke Tatry), I visited the Zbojnícka Koliba in the village of Stara Lesna. This is an old-fashioned restaurant, with meat roasting on a fire and a gypsy band in traditional outfits. Playing Slovak folk songs, it wasn’t long before the band started taking requests and everyone was singing along. Well, everyone who knows the lyrics to Slovakian folk songs that is. I settled for appreciative toe tapping. Here, I had sheep’s cheese on bread, An excursion to Krasnohorska jaskyna caves

followed by duck, chicken and pork fresh off the spit with sweet red cabbage and then sweet pirohy covered in poppy seeds (small dumplings which can be served savoury or sweet) for dessert. Meanwhile, the High Tatra Mountains, North West of Košice, are a wonderful holiday destination for nature and winter sports lovers, with plenty of walking trails, ski slopes and stunning views.You can even go bear watching if you dare. Even if you’re not sporty, it’s still well worth getting close to the mountains. Whilst at a ski resort, I took two cable cars half way up the mountain (you can also hike). Gazing up at the highest peak, with one of the world’s highest observatories perched on top, and the turquoise lake below, it was the most stunning sight I’d ever seen. When it comes to city breaks, Košice is often overlooked, but as the second largest city after Bratislava with a wealth of history, there’s plenty to do. And though you can trace the old walls of the city and visit one of the oldest and most expensive coins in the world at the East Slovakia Muzeum (the Treasure of Košice), there’s also a strong arts scene placing it firmly in the present. Košice was named the European City of Culture 2013 and it’s easy to see why. The Kunsthalle is an old swimming pool, turned art gallery, which exhibits modern and politically charged art, whilst Kulturpark, is an old army barracks, turned ultra modern centre for all kinds of events including
Fashion Week. Fittingly, each building is still labelled with their barrack names Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and so on. I also had a chance to visit the vibrant Tabačka kulturfabrik. In true Košice style, this was another industrial hub turned art space and was once a tobacco factory. With its quirky courtyard mural, events space and trendy bistro and bar, Tabačka kulturfabrik has a younger, more alternative vibe. Upstairs you’ll find offices of freelance artists and groups such as Street Art Communication (SAC) who are responsible for the gorgeous murals all over the city. Sheffield’s Phlegm has even done a residency with them. There is so much more to discover in the national parks surrounding Košice including the village of Háj, famed for its waterfalls and the 11th century Spiš Castle, North West of Košice in the neighbouring Spiš region. I spent my final day exploring the Krasnohorska jaskyňa caves in the national parks to the south and driving along the lonely, winding roads, in awe of the misty mountains and trees as far as the eye could see. As we drove back through the busy streets of Košice, I realised just how relaxing reconnecting with nature had been. With its many historical side streets and a thriving arts scene, Košice has everything you need for a picturesque city break, whilst being in easy reach of the tranquil national parks and the action-packed winter sports of the High Tatra Mountains.
