oronation Street star Jack P Shepherd found the perfect way to leave his Weatherfield worries behind him as he launched the festive season at Crystal Peaks. In between throwing the switch to turn on the Christmas lights and entertaining the many fans who attended the event, he relaxed by reading last year’s festive issue of Image when the Chuckle Brothers were the stars to grace our front cover. The actor who plays Corrie’s troubled David Platt is currently featuring in one of his most intense and dramatic storylines ever. But he was all smiles at Crystal Peaks for their official Christmas lights switch on. The festive fun included performances by young musicians from Westfield School and local bands and the event was hosted by Simon Morykin from the Hallam FM Drive time team.

WARD’S NURSERIES AND GARDEN CENTRE’S AUCTION-WINNER IS NOW ON DISPLAY – AND STILL RAISING MONEY FOR CHARITY. heffield Botanical the Elephant has packed her trunk and headed to Ward’s Nurseries & Garden Centre, Coal Aston, after being scooped up at the Herd of Sheffield auction for a mammoth £5,900. The 6ft elephant has now set up permanent home in the garden centre, outside the Old Potting Shed Coffee Shop and Restaurant, and director Sue Poulton is hoping she will attract visitors for years to come, whilst also helping to raise awareness for the Children’s Hospital Charity. “I’ve always had a thing for elephants and loved Sheffield Botanical from day one,” said Sue. “I did the trail with my granddaughter, Scarlett, and she had great fun finding all the elephants. “When the auction was announced I really wanted to bid but didn’t expect we would be able to go high enough, however, we set a budget of £6,000 and our daughter, Louise joined the online auction. “Given the high bids the elephants attracted on the night, we consider ourselves exceptionally lucky to have won the bid, with just £100 of our budget left to spare.” The auction was a huge success overall, raising £410,600 for the Children’s Hospital Charity.

“Sheffield Botanical not only represents Sheffield as one of the greenest cities in the UK, and the fantastic legacy of the herd, but also the spirit of the Garden Centre and our love for all things botanic,” Sue continued. “We want to celebrate everything that makes our city great and this elephant does just that.” Since stampeding into the garden centre in late October, Sheffield Botanical has already raised over £300 and, as a committed supporter of The Children’s Hospital Charity, Wards Nurseries and Garden Centre will also be donating 50 per cent of the proceeds accumulated at this year’s Santa’s grotto, with the remainder to be donated to Weston Park Cancer Charity. “We want to give visitors an opportunity to make a donation when taking photos with the elephant, and hope to keep raising vital funds for this important charity,” Sue added. “We very much hope that people will continue visiting the garden centre to see her.” The Sheffield Botanical elephant was originally situated in front of The City Hall, Barker’s Pool, and was designed and painted by the artist Ella Osborne.

Quench the fire CHRIS WILSON FINDS A NICE JUG OF LASSI GOES DOWN NICELY WITH THE CURRY AT AHKTARS. hat do you drink with a curry? For years my reflex action was to order a pint or three of chilled lager without giving it so much as a second thought... and if, by the end of the evening, you felt ready to explode with the combination of rich food and gassy beer, that was just the way of the world. But there is another way. In recent years I’ve come to appreciate the alcohol-free pleasures of lassi, the delicious yogurt drink that is becoming increasingly popular in Indian restaurants. There is no definitive recipe. As well as yoghurt I’ve seen lassi made with buttermilk and still or fizzy water. Savoury versions normally include cumin, salt and lemon juice while sweet calls for mango. The important thing is it should be nicely chilled and thin enough to enjoy as a thirst (and fire) quenching drink. And if the restaurant can be bothered to serve up a really good one, the odds are that attention to detail will be reflected in the rest of the meal. This was certainly the case at Akhtars in Killamarsh, where our appetite for one of

those great weekend traditions, the Friday night curry, was heightened by a delicious, large jug of salty lassi (£8.95) to accompany the crunchy, fresh popadoms (70p each) and pickle tray (£3). For starters the lamb chops (£4.95) were tender, juicy and packed with savoury flavour, while the chingri sizzler (£4.95) was a winning combination of tiger prawns stirfried with baby potatoes, onions and green peppers. With a separate bar area and one large spacious dining room, from which a team of chefs can be seen behind glass at the far end working flat-out in a busy kitchen, Akhtars is a comfortable, relaxed restaurant staffed by some of the friendliest waiters around. Main courses continued the high standards, with the chicken methi (£8.50) having a lovely smoky, slightly bitter yet mellow heat from the fenugreek. The king prawn balti (£11.95) had a very generous portion of prawns and a distinctive golden sauce that was sticky and almost sweet-and-sour in taste. Side dishes were outstanding. The naan bread (£2) was char-grilled, fluffy and perfect
for tearing and scooping up those sauces. Coconut rice (£2.95) and tarka dal (£3.95) were also right on the money. Clean plates ensured we would not be sampling the desserts. Perhaps that was also partly due to the fact that I also succumbed to the traditional pleasures of a large bottle of chilled Cobra lager (£4.60). Call it a weakness, but those old habits die hard. There are hundreds of uses for your Christmas dinner leftovers, and if done right you can use the same ingredients to transform Boxing Day into just as much of a culinary treat.
Turkey Dry, predictable turkey sandwiches are a thing of the past, instead, fight off the festive flab with a light, flavoursome turkey salad, which could make an impressive centre piece at the Boxing Day buffet. With salads, there are no limits, as well as veggies you can throw in leftover nuts and seeds, or dried fruit.
TURKEY AND WARM CLEMENTINE SALAD Ingredients
2 banana shallots Olive oil 2 clementines 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Sea salt Freshly-ground black pepper 250g leftover free-range turkey 100g mixed nuts and seeds, such as hazelnuts, pistachios or pumpkin seeds 50g dried cranberries 1 teaspoon runny honey 2 red chicory 75g watercress 75g rocket 2 tablespoons low-fat natural yoghurt 1 pomegranate 34 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk
Method
1. Peel and finely dice the shallots, then add to a small frying pan with a splash of olive oil and cook over a medium-low heat for around five minutes, or until golden and sticky. Finely grate in the zest from the clementines, then squeeze in the juice and cook for a further five minutes, or until reduced to a nice, syrupy consistency. Pour in the vinegar and four tablespoons of olive oil, season to taste, then reduce the heat to low and leave the to simmer until needed. 2. Heat a lug of olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium-high heat. Shred and add the turkey (I use both the brown and white meat) and fry for around five minutes, or until crispy. Roughly bash the nuts and seeds in a pestle and mortar, then add to the pan with the cranberries and honey. Season with salt and pepper and cook for a further couple of minutes, or until sticky and caramelised. 3. Meanwhile, trim the nice tops off the chicory, leaving them whole, then trim and finely slice the base. Place the chicory leaves onto a serving platter with the watercress and rocket. Drizzle over the warm clementine dressing, pile the sticky, caramelised turkey on top and spoon over the yoghurt. Halve a pomegranate, then hold one half cut-side down in your hand and bash the back with a spoon so the seeds fall over the salad. Serve and enjoy!

1. To cook the pasta, bring a large pan of water to the boil, add a generous measure of salt and tip in the pasta. Stir once and return to the boil, then boil rapidly for 12 minutes. Preheat the oven to 190ºC/ /fan 170ºC/gas 5.
Cheeseboard By the time you reach the cheeseboard on Christmas Day, tummies are full and no one can eat another morsel, often leading to a sad selection left stood on the table. Making a pasta bake from your cheeseboard gives it a second life, and makes for a quick and easy meal amongst the stress of festivities.

3. Drain the pasta and tip it into the sauce. Taste and add extra seasoning if necessary. Stir in the ham and grate in any hard cheese, then tip into a shallow ovenproof dish. Dice any remaining cheeses and swirl into the pasta to make cheesy pockets. 4. Mix the nuts and parsley together, then scatter over the pasta. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes until the nuts are golden and crunchy and everything is piping hot.

500g packet rigatoni 850ml milk 50g butter 50g plain flour Half a nutmeg (or ¼ tsp ready ground) 250g cheese 200g cooked ham, chopped (optional) 85g mixed nut, such as cashews, blanched almonds, and hazelnuts, roughly chopped Handful of parsley, roughly chopped

Vegetables For many, Boxing Day bubble and squeak is as traditional as carols and a tree, but vegetables are incredibly versatile and can be used to create some fabulous meals to feed the whole family. For a bit of spice, vegetables can be transformed into a curry, which can be frozen to use in the future – it could even cater a New Year’s Eve party, if you really want your leftovers to go the distance. Curry is quick, easy and a crowd-pleaser, it also offers an alternative to the rich, stodgy food that is normally associated with Christmas.
2. To make the sauce, pour the milk into a pan and add the butter, flour and plenty of seasoning. Grate in the half nutmeg (or sprinkle in the ready ground). Bring to the boil over a medium heat, whisking all the time until it makes a smooth, creamy sauce.
VEGETABLE CURRY Ingredients
2 onions, sliced 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 4 tablespoons tikka masala paste 680-700g jar tomato passata 400g can coconut milk 100ml water Coriander sprigs, to serve Rice or naan bread, to serve Method
1. To make the sauce, fry the onions in the oil in a large pan until softened and golden – add a splash of water if they start to dry out. Stir in the curry paste, cook for three minutes, then add the passata, coconut milk and 100ml water. Simmer for a few minutes. 2. Tip the leftover vegetables into the sauce and simmer for 10-15 minutes until tender (reduce this time if vegetables are already cooked). Scatter with coriander and serve.
If you’re feeling fancy, and have some Yorkshire puddings leftover, top them with a little beef or turkey and serve alongside gravy – these are great hot or cold for post-Christmas canapes. To help leftover Christmas pudding last longer, crumble it and mix it into vanilla ice cream – for the more experienced home chefs mixing it into your own homemade ice cream would also create a lovely Christmassy dessert for weeks to come. To give the dessert that extra luxurious twist, stir in some leftover amaretto or cream liqueur. Combine your favourite Christmas tipples to create cocktails – the perfect addition to any New Year’s Eve party. Amaretto, prosecco and orange juice can be mixed into a fizzy festive drink.

Now the actress who played Cilla BattersbyBrown is trading the cobbled streets of Weatherfield for the bright lights of the Sheffield stage. Wendi Peters will be joining a star-studded cast at the Lyceum for this year’s panto production of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs as the Wicked Queen. The panto baddie is a character we all love to hate and Wendi says she cannot wait to take on the role. “Oh, there’s nothing like being a baddie,” says Wendi. “It’s absolutely brilliant. I love being booed and hissed, especially by the kids. That’s all part of the panto. “It’s a really important thing is panto. It’s the first time a lot of these kids have been in a live theatre. They’re our future theatre audiences, so if they come and have a wonderful time, they’ll keep coming back and move on to other things and become theatre buffs for the rest of their lives, which is just brilliant.” Though Wendi is best known for being on our screens as Cilla, she is no stranger to the stage and says performing in Sheffield will be something of a homecoming. “I loved being in Corrie, I adored the character and I loved everybody there and I had a brilliant time, but I’d already done 15 years in the theatre, so I feel like I’m just going back to doing what I do. I did lots of musicals, it’s where I come from, so I’m really lucky that I’ve managed to go back to do a lot of stuff like that. “My first ever job, when I left college in ’87,

was here at The Crucible. I did panto here. I was one of the dancers in Cinderella, so I feel like 29 years later, I’m coming home, coming back to where I started.” Most families will be very familiar with the story of Snow White and the Wicked Queen, but what can we expect from her modern, panto incarnation? “Obviously, she’ll be as glamorous. I’d like to play her quite regal and quite posh, and she might just slip every now and then into something a bit northern. And of course we’ll have the old hag that tries to persuade Snow White with the apple, so we’ll have fun with that.” The demand for pantomimes seems to get stronger and stronger every year (last year’s panto was seen by over 46,000 people), and Wendi believes they remain so popular because they are a deeply-loved tradition the whole family can get involved in. “It’s a good mixture of song and dance, comedy, audience participation and a bit of a spectacle as well – everybody loves to come and see lots of glitter,” she says. “Us Brits eccentric as we are - we’re known around the world for this silly thing. I think it’s such a wonderful British tradition, and I hope it never ends, because it’s great fun.” You can see Wendi and the rest of the cast – including Phil Gallagher (CBeebies’ Mister Maker), Damian Williams (Sheffield panto legend) and Joanna Sawyer (Becky from BBC One’s Our Girl) - in this year’s spectacular production at the Lyceum from Friday 9 December until Sunday 8 January.

Thank you for the music S21 LIVE’S KEEN BAND OF VOLUNTEERS ARE NOT JUST COACHING THE STARS OF THE FUTURE BUT ARE HELPING TO BRING A COMMUNITY TOGETHER THROUGH MUSIC. RACHEL MARTIN REPORTS. raining the next generation of young musicians can be unpredictable. Beyond cultivating ability and discipline, it’s anybody’s guess which influences, social connections and spontaneous inspirations might amount someday to a far-travelling set of sounds. Enter S21 Live. A voluntary music education programme in Renishaw that aims to make tuition in music, to people of all ages and abilities, one of the cornerstones of its mission. Based in Renishaw and Spinkhill Community Centre, after moving from Eckington Business Centre due to a disagreement over noise, the volunteer-led organisation offers students of all ages an enrichment programme, focus on using music as a means to bring people together, and allowing individuals to enjoy a sense of creativity and self-expression. The programme, which was established around

ten years ago as part of an Eckington regeneration programme, focuses on creativity and teamwork in a group setting, with the hope of bringing families, communities and musicians together to share a collective experience. Since the move to Renishaw, the numbers using the service have dropped – something committee members are working hard to rectify – and now more than ever, the group is committed to working with the wider community, offering musical and vocal tutoring, at affordable prices, to all that want it. Brian Wood has been playing musical instruments for over 50 years and has been with the project since its inception. “Our main priority is the children,” he says. “Everyone who attends S21 Live is taught by local, professional musicians, who have a passion for the area and want to see the scheme succeed. We are totally committed to
S21 and to helping our community.” Brian spent 20 years on the road to pop stardom with Dave Berry and the Cruisers – still playing with the band to this day – and has since enjoyed a successful music career, signing a contract with an American record label alongside fellow tutor Ian Tag-Waggett in the band ‘Shape of the Rain’. He is now joined at S21 by four other practised teachers, who consider themselves less a “school” than a group of like-minded individuals. The dedicated team offer private and group lessons for instruments generally not taught in school settings: keyboard, drums, percussion, electric and acoustic guitars, bass and vocals at a cost of £6 per 45-minute session. They’ve also shaped a ‘mature’ band and host a more relaxed jam-night on a Wednesday evening. Education at S21 doesn’t begin and end with lessons, either. Brian envisions a

broader range of exposure for his students, one that instills fundamentals in music appreciation and production. Alongside the basics, the dedicated team of experienced teachers also show pupils how to record music, as well as breathing exercises in the singing sessions. In addition to Wednesday night rehearsals, the all-volunteer band has also become a regular feature at local events, and many of the band members agree that one of their favourite concerts each year is the Eckington Christmas festival. Where this year, as well as performing, they hope to sell a feel-good festive single – recorded in-house by Brian and members of the group. “The excitement on the faces of the students is the highlight of my year,” Brian continues. “It’s a joy doing concerts and seeing the reactions of the people in the audience. It brings the community together and it means a lot to know we are making a difference.” As well as developing music and arts opportunities, the group also offers students an escape from the hustle and bustle. “Over the years, students have told me that band practice is a nice break from the stresses of everyday life,” says vocal coach Helen Green. “It’s a good way to carve out a little ‘me’ time and an opportunity to form friendships along the way. “There is also a sense of camaraderie that comes from doing something enjoyable with
like-minded folk, and that shared experience as musicians has formed the foundation of several new friendships.” Various instruments and different levels of experience make for an interesting mix of musicians, and all members admit they had much to learn when they first began, and that teachers like Brian, Helen and Ian, who once played with the likes of Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac, helped them to reach their goals. Keavey Green, 16, joined the group at eight years old, and has spent many years suffering with severe arthritis. Nowadays, she sings and plays bass, and is currently studying for her rock school grades. “As well as making so many new friends, my confidence has improved dramatically,” says Keavey. “If I’m having a bad day, everyone pitches in. The other group members become your extended family. We all watch out for each other and share a love for making music.” Many talented youngsters have passed through the group, including Tom Kerr, who is currently studying towards a doctorate in music at Huddersfield University, and Sam Dixon, who, as a budding David Bowie tribute artist, came to the group to play bass and now hopes to work towards a music degree, after completing his studies at Sheffield Hillsborough College. Without the facilities provided by S21, however, none of these students would have
been able to succeed. “Nowadays, kids press play on their computers without really giving full focus to the music, and to see these youngsters achieve something through hard work is very rewarding – to all the committee members,” says Kenny Riley, 65, who has done the promotions for the group for the past four years. Alongside more shows, the team are looking to teach percussion in schools and support groups, as well as establishing a community radio station, which will give the budding musicians a platform to have their music heard. Brian is also encouraging anyone with a love of music and a little bit of experience – no matter how long ago – to sign up for lessons or join the band, which practices from 6-9.30pm on Wednesday evenings. No audition is required.
Though S21 Live is partially self-funded, the program cannot operate without support. Sheffield Renewables have launched their second community share, giving local people another opportunity to invest and benefit from communityowned renewable solar energy produced in Sheffield. The share offer event at Sheffield’s Quaker Meeting House kick-started two months of promotion to raise £70,000 from investors to deliver two more solar PV schemes. Sheffield Renewables has already raised £16,000 from investors and are half way to being able to fund their next solar PV project, which will be installed on the roof of Lembas - a local vegetarian and wholefood wholesalers and cooperative, based in Heeley. Lembas will benefit from a reduction in electricity costs and will lower their carbon footprint through the use of renewable solar energy. Income from the sale of electricity and the government's Feed In Tariff will help Sheffield Renewables generate revenue to support further renewable energy schemes and a Community Benefit Fund to help local projects, as well as paying a 3 per cent return to investors. Atkinsons Santa adds festive sparkle to St Luke’s Hospice Christmas Santa Claus will be visiting Atkinson’s department store from 26 November to 22 December, with all proceeds from his magical grotto being donated to St Luke’s Hospice. Situated on Atkinsons’ first floor, the grotto will be open from 11am to 3pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and 10.30am to 4pm Sunday. Entry costs £5, with each young visitor receiving a gift from Santa and an ‘I’ve visited Santa’ certificate – keepsakes of the visit are also available for an additional donation.

Subtle changes There will be an all-new Seat Leon released in February 2017. The previous Leon was a winner largely due to its distinct, classy look and the new model has followed with this philosophy. It’s not an ‘all-new’ Leon, but an update to the previous model. There are subtle styling changes to the exterior which include redesigned bumpers to make the car look bigger and there’s an injection of brand new and updated technologically as showcased in the Ateca SUV. This includes the likes of traffic jam assist and pedestrian protection assist. It also comes with a new trim level named XCELLENCE which is supposed to give a distinct upmarket feel and there’re a host of new Euro 6 compliant engines available to choose from.

ALL-NEW A5 Welcome everybody to the all-new Audi A5, a car which took the market by storm with its initial release by in 2007. Available in Coupe and five-door Sportback body styles, the A5 is built on an all-new platform and comes with all the latest technological gadgets you can think of. The Coupe will be available with three diesels and two petrol engines whilst the Sportback will only be available with one petrol and two diesels. Championship edition To celebrate the championship win of Marco Wittmann in the DTM Championship, BMW has given their cherished M4 another special edition. Called the DTM Championship Edition, it’ll have top-class motor racing technology for drive and suspension as well as a specific design that mimics the DTM racing cars built by BMW Motorsport. This includes body stripes, a huge boot spoiler and aggressive body styling. Based on the M4 GTS, it gets a 3.0-litre turbocharged watercooled straight-six petrol engine producing 593hp, which is good for a 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds and a 190mph top speed. Inside, it’s a strict two-seater carbon bucket job with a roll cage to replaces the rear seats. Luxuries include Sat-Nav, air-con, adaptive lights and parking sensors.
Stand-out crowd-pleaser After the release of the newly updated GTR earlier this year, Nissan has revealed the Nismo edition – the flagship in the GTR range. Costing from £149,995, the Nismo will be powered by a more powerful version of the 3.8litre twin-turbo V6 found in regular GTR models, 592hp to be precise. This can be due to the fact that this Nismo engine features technology from the GTR GT3 car. As with all GTR’s, power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed double-clutch gearbox. With the improved aerodynamic capabilities of this Nismo edition, it produces more downforce than any other Nissan production car to date.
