Matthew Rhodes is blown away by a recipe passed down through the generations at new Ecclesall Road venue, Mezwaani Restro & Bar.
Atypical Indian restaurant of days gone by used to involve a dimly lit restaurant with white tablecloths, a BYOB policy or a small drinks menu featuring large bottles of offering the familiar line-up of mild, medium, or hot ‘British curry’ classics.
How times have changed!
My wife and I visited the newly opened Mezwaani on Ecclesall Road on a Saturday night, which could not be further from the traditional curry house of the nineties. One side is a huge modern lounge area with a large bar running down one side with very comfortable low seating and on the other side a stunning restaurant. No expense has been spared, with intricate details on the décor throughout. The place was busy including a table of 35 in the restaurant side, so we were seated in the lounge area which was perfect for us.
We were presented with a cocktail menu and an excellent wine list and we settled on a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir, reasonably
priced at £31. As I’m often drawn to red wine with spicy food it was an excellent choice (If I say so myself). The menu is 15 pages long and has an emphasis on Indian on some dishes and street food options.
We were served a complimentary portion of poppadoms, which were in small pieces individually fried, unlike the traditional way of serving the whole poppadom to break up yourself.
We were served by Roshan who was an absolute credit to the place for the entire evening and nothing was too much trouble. I ordered the Malai Lamb Chops to start which were cooked to perfection combined with excellent spicing. My wife went for the Nilgiri Prawns - four giant prawns that were bright green from the mint and coriander in the marinade.
For mains we chose ‘Grandma’s Chicken Curry’ and Saag Lamb, with Jeera Rice and a Paratha Bread to accompany. Both curries were rich and delightful and a level above the standard of traditional curries.
The lamb was so tender and just the right spice to balance with the bitter spinach. Grandma played an absolute blinder with the chicken curry, and it was probably one of the best chicken curries I have ever had (nice to see she is still able to work in the kitchen at her age!).
We didn’t order dessert, but we enjoyed a complimentary ‘Indian Baileys’ style hot towel in sight.
All the dishes were fantastic, matched with great service in a modern setting on a busy Saturday night.
I think Mezwaani will become a long-term feature of Ecclesall Road. For those that want to level up their Indian dining experience, it is an exemplar of multicuisine eating - you won’t be disappointed!

revious visits to Losehill House Hotel & Spa have been dominated by spectacular views; the hotel sits in a valley between Win Hill and Lose Hill and offers some of the most picturesque views of the Peak District.
PBut, as we move into spring and haven’t quite set the clocks forward just yet, an evening visit keeps those views hidden behind low-lying cloud and dark nights.
This doesn’t make a visit to Losehill any less spectacular. The hotel, which has been in the Roden family since 2007, is a stunning space with 22 bedrooms, a spa and ample grounds to explore. It’s also a popular wedding spot and can cater for celebrations up to 120 people.
Grafene, the hotel’s restaurant, is open to visitors as well as hotel guests and is largely housed in an orangery overlooking the countryside. It has a Double AA Rosette Award for Culinary Excellence and was recently listed by The Times as one of their ‘20 Best Wild Places to Eat in Britain’.
As throughout the hotel, the restaurant champions the Peak District as much suppliers referenced through the menus.
On the evening of our visit there’s a choice of two – a three-course a la carte (£67.50) or six-course tasting menu (£90).
After enjoying a drink in the lounge – a gin-based English Garden cocktail (£14) for my wife and a glass of Renishaw Hall Madelaine Angevine/Solaris/Bacchus (£8 for 125ml) for myself – we decided to order from the former.
Canapes of a miniature cheese and ham toastie and roasted red pepper and chive quiche were enjoyed before we were shown to our table.
Still warm beer and treacle bread quickly arrived with a quenelle of whipped Henderson’s Relish butter – as good as earnest.
As with everything at Losehill, presentation is of the highest standard and our starters didn’t disappoint. The meaty
terrine were offset by sharp pickled carrots and shallots as well an earthy black garlic mayonnaise.
My wife’s 63º duck egg yolk, served with asparagus, wild garlic oil, brown butter brioche croutons, hollandaise sauce,
more than a hint of richness.
Creedy Carver duck breast was served pink and had lovely crisp skin and paired well with a duck fat hasselback potato, salt baked celeriac and honey and balsamic glazed beetroot. A duck and orange sauce
Watson’s Losehill lamb cannon was very in season and blushingly pink and served with pommes anna, turnips, kohlrabi, salsa verde, crispy anchovy and a lamb jus. It paired well with a glass of Müenzenrieder pinot noir (£8.50 for 125ml). We also shared some buttered seasonal greens (£5).
Desserts have always been a cut above
the form of Yorkshire forced rhubarb and a Calvados and burnt apple parfait.
Every visit to Losehill House Hotel feels special is enhanced by the excellent food and superb service. Being able to enjoy those spectacular views is an added bonus.

ou expect a certain amount of theatre when you’re eating at a restaurant whose concept revolves and that’s exactly what you get at Six and a Half. But what you also see is a chef team that is clearly enjoying itself and the food onto the plate.

Chris Wilson enjoys the opportunity to relax.
uilt in 1908 and named after a local family whose ancestry dates back to 1415, The Maynard has a proud place in the history of classic Derbyshire dining establishments.
BIt’s more than just a restaurant of course. As a hotel it has attracted the great and the good for decades, welcoming famous names with a strong sporting connection after hosting the touring national cricket teams from Australia in 1938 and the West Indies in the 1950s.
Meanwhile it has maintained its
sought-after wedding venues in the region. The beautiful setting in the heart of the Hope Valley has always been a showstopper and the fabulous garden lends itself perfectly to a spectacular wedding album.
Recent years have seen a tasteful restoration. Formerly the Maynard Arms, it was rebranded as The Maynard in 2007
balancing act of remaining true to its history while offering a dining option that is both beautifully comfortable and totally contemporary.
On my latest visit I found dinner at The Maynard to be a real treat. The menu has a great balance of familiar pub classics and more modern bistro-style cuisine. It’s also good to see that virtually everything on the menu is sourced from local farms and suppliers.
Feeling immediately at home, thanks to the friendliest of welcomes from a very attentive staff and the nicely relaxed ambience in the immaculately spacious yet intimate restaurant, this was the perfect setting for comfort food with more than a touch of class.
To start, cured tuna and salmon ballotine, wrapped in seaweed and served with a bouillabaisse sauce, grilled spring onions and a rocket salad (£12.95) was both
That moist, moreish tuna was really worth lingering over.
Our second starter was rather more robust and equally impressive. Rabbit and mustard
sauce and more of those accompanying grilled spring onions with rocket salad
and slightly crunchy shell.
The menu as a whole combines hearty dishes such as steaks and pies with lighter, more seasonal fare, including my pan-fried duck-breast, hoisin duck pate wrapped in spinach pancake, sweet potato puree, tempura broccoli, cashew and hoisin sauce (£24.95). There was some very precise cooking happening here and the duck, served blushingly pink, was tender, juicy, salty and with all the accompaniments matching perfectly, made for a completely satisfactory main course.
Slow-cooked lamb shank served with sauteed new potatoes, with persillade, grilled asparagus and red wine jus (£24.95)
tender, sticky and falling off the bone, was faultless.
Portions are on the generous side, but we couldn’t resist a side order of dauphinoise potatoes (£4.95). There’s a great wine list too, reasonably priced and curated with great skill, from special occasion big-hitters to very reasonably priced house wines. A large glass of the Rubic Garnacha (£8.45) matched those meaty mains ideally.
Many restaurant menus fall short on desserts, but The Maynard maintains its high standards with light, sweet options. Eton mess with white chocolate and strawberry tiramisu (£9.95) was a delicate delight and The Maynard Gourmand Verre
served with a glass of dessert wine.
Dinner at The Maynard brings the opportunity to relax in the luxurious setting of one of Derbyshire’s longest-standing hotels where old school service and comfort meet contemporary cuisine. It’s well worth going the extra mile.

We’re now less than 100 days away from the FIFA World Cup and what better way to build the momentum than with the release of a football-themed single?
‘Stand Together’ has been recorded by local band, Ri-Fi, and will be released on streaming and download platforms on 3 April. This will coincide with a very special
United take on Swansea. Ri-Fi will be performing before the game in the fanzone, located on the corner of Cherry Street and Shoreham Street, and will be interviewed on the pitch at half time.
But there’s much more to the song than just being a football anthem.
The song was originally penned by Keith Haynes for the 2014 Brazil World Cup and was found on his iPad after his passing. His son, Anthony, approached work colleague and Ri-Fi lead singer Dan Haynes (no relation) and asked if he would like to
They jumped at the chance.
Anthony and Dan both work for tool manufacturer Rothenberger and other band members – Lee Whitehead, Andy Matthews and Richard Jowers – all work in
construction related industries. Given this connection, they decided to use the song as a platform to raise mental health awareness in the industry.
Construction is one of the toughest industries to work in, both physically and mentally, with a suicide rate four-times the national average. Anyone who has worked on a building site will have tales of banter and bravado but what do you do if things aren’t too good? Fear of ridicule can often lead to workers dealing with struggles – be they anxiety, depression or stress – alone. But help is available.
counselling for tradespeople and has been quick to show their support for the single.
On The Tools – the nation’s largest online construction community – and Construction Sport – who create leisure opportunities –have also jumped on board and working in tandem with the band, are also aiming to raise money for The Lost City – Project
will be donated to this charity, who aim to raise £2.5million nationally to fund therapy sessions for tradespeople across the UK.
“Stand Together is a project built around football and music and something that

matters far beyond both: looking out for each other,” said Richard Jowers. “It’s about unity and community and shining a light on mental health in the industry.”
Alongside the release of the single, Ri-Fi are selling Stand Together t-shirts and have a unique ‘brick wall’ where businesses can sponsor a brick. This will take pride of place on stage at every band performance.
Through downloads and streams, the band are hoping to crack the Top 75 and who knows, you may hear the chorus playing over the end credits of Match of the Day after a famous England victory.
Ri-Fi will be ramping up the live performances in the coming months, getting you well and truly in the mood for football’s most prestigious tournament, which this year takes place in USA, Canada and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July.

Global events dominate the headlines, and financial markets react. By the time this goes to print, the story and market response may have changed again. That’s the nature of both politics and markets - they change and move on.
So why do people panic? There is plenty in the world to feel concerned about, and it’s entirely valid to feel that way. But your investments and long-term financial planning should not be one of those worries.
Short-term market fluctuations are a normal part of investing, and political uncertainty is ever present. A clear and robust financial plan, combined with a well-diversified portfolio, spread appropriately across regions, sectors and asset types in line with your risk profile, helps

ensure that no single event defines your financial future.
With the new tax year beginning on 6 April, it’s also a sensible time to review your financial planning and tax allowances. ISA subscriptions reset, pension contribution opportunities refresh, and small, timely decisions can reduce unnecessary tax and support long-term plans.
For individuals, families and business owners across Sheffield and the surrounding areas, taking stock now can make a meaningful difference.
If you would value clear, independent advice tailored to your own circumstances, we would be pleased to help. Pick up the phone and give us a call - we’re always happy to have an initial chat.

uch of what makes Westbourne distinctive cannot be captured in a single headline or statistic. It is found in the everyday moments of school life: the buzz of purposeful learning in classrooms, children collaborating in music rehearsals, laughter echoing across House events, and pupils discovering learning in The Dell. These experiences, alongside an enriched and dynamic curriculum, shape young people who are curious, kind and ambitious.

At Westbourne, learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Our pupils enjoy hands-on experiences in the wider community, helping them understand the world around them and see their learning in real contexts. Our collaborative music programme is a wonderful example of this. Throughout the year, our musicians perform an array of concerts from formal performances

With small class sizes averaging just 15 pupils, we are proud of the personalised attention each child receives.
