PREVIEW S

heffield is gearing up to present its creative credentials to the world, and we have the people and the go-ahead industries to really make a positive impact not just in the UK but across the globe. That is the positive spin being put on last month’s disappointing news that Sheffield had lost out to NewcastleGateshead in the competition to host the £5m Great Exhibition of the North. This might be interpreted as merely putting a brave face on it but, as consultant editor Andy Waple reports in this month’s First For Business, there really is no need for despondency. The event will encompass the whole of the north – and the city will be showcasing its creative credentials in the North East.

all attracted creative people to set up business here. Just to keep the positive vibes flowing, MADE 16 – the entrepreneur festival that brings inspirational speakers from all over the world to Sheffield – is nearly upon us. One of this year’s keynote speakers will be inspirational British wheelchair athlete Hannah Cockcroft, who will tell the story of her sporting success. Hannah, featured on the cover of First For Business this month, suffered two cardiac arrests shortly after she was born resulting in damage to two areas of her brain and leaving her with a deformity to her legs and feet, weakened hips and also damage to her fine motor skills.

The fact that the city was shortlisted is testimony to the strength of the sector that has a long history of staging popular, enduring festivals and events that have proved ideal economic drivers.

But this did not stop Hannah from discovering, loving, and excelling at sport. She will be taking to the podium at MADE as World, European and Paralympic British wheelchair sprint athletics champion.

Sheffield is home to the UK’s largest practicing community of artists and designers outside London, bringing a constant flow of creative energy and activity. Another success story featured this month is Sheffield’s Sardinian-born Lucia Gadau who is celebrating after being named best barista in England. Lucia, who works at Nonnas on Ecclesall Road, takes her craft very seriously and first started her search for the perfect cup of coffee in her homeland when she was 18.

CHRIS WILSON, EDITOR Lucia beat thousands of baristas from across the country to win, but she has pretty stiff competition in her own adopted city. We showcase another 10 of the best independent places to talk business over a coffee in Sheffield. One of Sheffield’s oldest traditions is the annual naming of the new Master Cutler and the latest local business big hitter to take on the title is Richard Edwards, an engineer and manufacturer who ran G & J Hall, one of the oldest tool manufacturing businesses in the city, until its sale in November 2015. He spoke to chief feature writer Clare Parkin about his ten main goals for the year ahead. WE’RE GOING TO DO THE NORTH PROUD SHEFFIELD MAY NOT BE HOSTING A £5M GREAT EXHIBITION BUT, AS ANDY WAPLE REPORTS, THE CITY’S LEADERS ARE DETERMINED THE REGION WILL STILL MAKE A IMPACT AT THE £5M CULTURAL SHOWCASE.

heffield may have lost out on its bid to host the £5million Great Exhibition of the North but the city’s cultural industries sector should still benefit from the government sponsored showcase.

businesses of our great region. “During the bid process we have developed existing collaborations and created new partnerships – just think of that incredible energy will combine to produce an incredible exhibition in the summer of 2018. The prospect is mind boggling as well as tremendously exciting. We look forward to being part of it.

Last month the department of cultural selected Newcastle-Gateshead as the winner from the four shortlisted bids – the others to miss out were Blackpoool and Bradford. We should not be too surprised – the chairman of the selection committee was Sir Gary Verity – the Welcome to Yorkshire leader – who no doubt would have had to face up to claims of nepotism had the winner come from his home soil. However, Sheffield need not be totally dismayed at missing out on the event to be held in 2018 and estimated to be worth £10m in visitor income, as it will encompass the whole of the north – and the city will be showcasing its creative credentials in the North East. John Mothersole, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council said: “Sheffield is incredibly well placed to contribute to the exhibition. I know we all look forward to working with the other cities to make the Great Exhibition of the North a worldwide attraction.” Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City and Cultural Engagement at the University of Sheffield agreed: “This exhibition is a platform for the whole of the North to celebrate and showcase the best of what we have – whether it’s ground breaking innovations or a whole host of inspirational treasures. “So we see this as an opportunity

for the North to act in unison and we look forward to working with NewcastleGateshead and the other towns and cities in the north to make it happen.” The bid process itself has been a useful exercise for the creative sector – bringing individuals together to act as a team. Prof Toulmin added: “It has been an amazing experience for the city region and we would not have been able to do this without the tremendous support of the creative communities, industries and

“The Great Exhibition of the North will provide us all in the North with a living, breathing legacy, that will positively affect the UK economy - we aim to do the North proud.” The Great Exhibition will be a two-month festival to celebrate the best of art, culture and design in the north. £15 million into a legacy fund to attract further cultural investment in the north to help boost the economy. Sheffield’s bid was headlined as ‘Northern Lights’ aimed to celebrate the region as a crucible of makers encompassing advanced manufacturing and technology as well as the more traditional art forms. Events would have taken place across the centre of Sheffield, along with ‘satellite shows’ in Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster highlighting the city’s strengths in manufacturing, research, music, beer and much more. Significant public art commissions were envisaged along with the Feast of the North – a celebration of food and a neon light installation pointing the way to Sheffield across Northern towns and cities. It was the former Chancellor George Osborne who came up with the Exhibition idea as part of his Northern Powerhouse concept and it has progressed under the new leadership. Culture Secretary Karen Bradley said she was won over by Newcastle and Gateshead's ambition, including the organisers' estimate that the exhibition will attract three million people.

INSTITUTE AT THE HEART OF SHEFFIELD’S ARTISTIC LIFE Sheffield’s history of teaching art and design dates back to at least 1843 when the Sheffield Institute of Arts was born. Over the years its has grown into one of the country’s most admired institutions and this year it played a crucial part in Sheffield city centre regeneration when it moved to its new HQ at the former Head Post Office building in Fitzalan Square. The Institute, part of Hallam University, took over a long-term lease on the iconic landmark in January after a multimillion pound refurbishment.

has provided teaching rooms, practice studios, as well as exhibition and event space. It staged the city’s biggest student-led exhibition in the summer, showcasing talent from creative art, design, fashion, photography, film and animation. The Institute has produced many successful artists and performers including Jarvis Cocker, Nick Park and Warp Films' Mark Herbert.

The Grade II listed building that opened in 1910 had been mothballed since it ended service as the city’s main post office in 1999 and had become an eyesore. Reconstruction and modernisation of the interior

through the legacy work, we were looking for bids across the whole of the north of England so we can really show everything the north has to offer." The 77-day exhibition will have the theme of The Blazing World - The Fires of Invention. It is hoped Robert Stephenson's Rocket will be brought back to its birthplace in the North East – the original is housed at the Science Museum in London and replicas are on show at the York Railway Museum. During the event, five northern and five international artists will create work on the exhibition's themes and 50 writers will be tasked with ‘rewriting the narratives of the north’, while the organisers promise to ‘connect artists with scientists and inventors to work closely.’

So far Sheffield has not announced how it hopes to contribute, but it has plenty to offer. The fact that the city was shortlisted is testimony to the strength of the sector that has a long history of staging popular, enduring festivals and events that have proved ideal economic drivers. In addition, it is home to the UK's largest practicing community of artists and designers outside London, bringing a constant flow of creative energy and activity. AGENDA

HIgh profile: the Off The Shelf literary festival

The creative and design industries in Sheffield have an annual turnover of over £1 billion, employing more than 18,000 people in the region and at 7.2 per cent of the population that’s well over the national average. Nationally, the creative industries, which include the film, TV and music industries, are one of the fastest growing areas of the UK economy, generating £76.9 billion a year or £8.8 million an hour. October celebrated its 25th anniversary this year and proved once more to be one of the region’s most eagerly anticipated cultural events bringing worldwide literary talent to the city. Its importance was underlined by the support it was given by both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University who worked together to support and evolve the festival in association with Sheffield City Council and Lottery funded Arts Council England. City council cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure, Coun Mary Lea, said: “Once again Off the Shelf demonstrated its weight as a high profile literary festival on the national calendar, attracting an array of worldwide literary talent.”

The cultural economy is being driven by the Sheffield Culture Consortium which is charged with developing visual arts in the city and harnessing its value. It is currently running an Arts Council funded three-year project named Making Ways to support and develop contemporary visual art produced in the city.

The Making Ways scheme is complementing the Year of Making Sheffield 2016 – a year-long festival and partnership between culture and business celebrating five core themes of making: art & design, manufacturing & industry, film & literature, heritage & place-making, and music & performance. “Great arts and culture is what makes our city unique – it’s what attracts business investment; a skilled workforce and students from around the world seeking a vibrant and exciting place to study,” said Professor Roger Eccleston, Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences at Hallam University. Outgoing Master Cutler Craig McKay and CEO of Sheffield engineering firm Evenort Ltd adds: “We need to ensure Making Ways creates strong and productive links between the artists communities and business. Sheffield has always appreciated its artistic talent and this funding will be significant in helping us to ensure that the artistic community becomes a greater part of its economy.” So while the city has missed out on the Great Exhibition of the North, it clear that it’s own show goes on for the benefit of the local economy.

INSPIRATIONAL BRITISH WHEELCHAIR ATHLETE TO APPEAR AT MADE 2016 World, European and Paralympic British wheelchair sprint athlete champion Hannah Cockroft will be one of the keynote speakers at MADE 2016. Hannah will tell her inspirational story of her journey to sporting success. Hannah suffered two cardiac arrests shortly after she was born resulting in damage to two areas of her brain and left her with deformity to her legs and feet, weakened hips and also with damage to her fine motor skills. At senior school she discovered sport and initially started playing wheelchair basketball but at the age of 15 her racing talent was discovered. She now has an impressive medal collection for her racing and currently holds the T34 World Records for 100, 200, 400 and 800m. At this year’s Rio Paralympic Games, she won three gold medals, breaking one of her own world records in the process. Hannah said: “All my life I have been told that I can’t do things and been determined to prove people wrong. I’m looking forward to sharing my story with all the attendees at MADE and hopefully showing them that you can do whatever you want to, if you are ready to adapt and work for it.” Hannah is patron of several charities and actively campaigns on disability issues and was awarded her MBE by The Queen in 2013.

CHOCOLATIER MAX SCOTFORD SPILLS THE BEANS ON HOW MADE HELPED HIM. Budding entrepreneur Max Scotford was so inspired after attending MADE 2015 he decided to make his business ideas become a reality. Just twelve months on and the 22-yearold is the man behind Bullion Chocolate which is launching in Sheffield just in time for Christmas. The company is unique in that it creates single origin chocolate which means chocolate that is produced from beans grown on a particular estate. “To make the chocolate, I use what is known as the bean-to-bar method,” said Max. “This allows me to control every aspect of the chocolate making process. Which results in an extremely high quality product.

“I’m the first to use this approach to chocolate making in Sheffield and the surrounding areas.” Max, who has had a desire to set up his own business from being a child, said he was inspired after attending MADE. “I can remember going to my first MADE Festival back in 2011, with the likes of Peter Jones on the panel,” he said. “I’ve been going year-on year-since. “It really is fantastic, the whole city transforms into an entrepreneurial hub. Drawing likeminded individuals from across the UK to be inspired in achieving their goals. “It was actually at last year’s MADE event

where I decided to go for it and chase my dream. I hit a time in my life where I felt that I had gained enough skills and experience from my education and graduate job that I was ready to start my own business. “Hearing all the speakers share their stories made me want to write my own. “There were some photographers at the event that instantly printed your image, and it was on the back of this image that I wrote ‘take a risk and get off your arse’. “So that’s what I did! And I’m now in the process of preparing to launch my business, Bullion Chocolate in time for Christmas. “If you’re thinking about doing something, go to MADE, be inspired. It could just be the push that you need.” First For Business | www.sheffieldvibe.com 11

FROM CARELESS TO CAR-LESS HOW TO DEAL WITH RECKLESS DRIVERS WHO KEEP WRECKING THEIR COMPANY CARS . . . ROB MOORE RECOVERY EXPERT AND PARTNER AT TAYLOR & EMMETT Where an employee is provided with a company car, it is important to have rules governing the employee's use of the vehicle. I note from your query that the company car is part of these employees’ contract of employment. This means that it is a contractual benefit and that you should take extra care before taking it away from them, as what you are seeking to do will effectively change their terms of employment. The general position is that unless the change is expressly allowed by the employment contract, an existing employment contract can only be varied with the agreement of both parties. My first recommendation would be for you to take a closer look at their employment contract, to see if any term allows you to remove the employees from the company car scheme. You may find a clause giving you the power to vary this specific benefit. This type of clause is called a flexibility clause and the good news is that it is not subject to an obligation of reasonableness. Provided that your employees are not going to be significantly worse off by you removing the car from them, you will be able to rely on this type of clause even if it makes changes that are detrimental to their interests. I would however be careful that you do not preclude any employee from getting to work. You may also find that the employment contract lists the employees’ responsibilities in connection with the use of the car and highlights their obligation to drive with due care and

12 First For Business | www.sheffieldvibe.com

DEAR DREAM TEAM, I am the MD of a business with 60 staff, and around half of them have company cars. Unfortunately a handful of these employees have proved to be reckless drivers, and their scrapes over the last decade are really hitting our insurance premiums. A car is part of their contract, but do I have grounds for removing them from the company car scheme?

diligence. You may then be able to argue a breach of contract on their part. If you do not see any of the above clauses in these employees’ contracts, several other options would be available to you. Firstly, you could seek their express consent to being removed from the company car scheme. You will need to consult with them to explain the reason for the change, you must record the variation to the terms of their contract in writing. Obtaining their consent may prove to be difficult as removing the right to a company car may undoubtedly place them in a less advantageous financial position. Be aware that dismissing the employees who refuse the change may expose your business to unfair dismissal claims. Alternatively, you could attempt to impose the change and leave it to the employees to decide how to respond. This may result in claims for constructive dismissal.

Rob Moore

Finally, you could choose to terminate the employees’ employment and offering re-employment on new terms which does not involve the contractual benefit on company car. I would highlight that this is a very drastic choice, and should you opt for this option, you should be mindful of the notice period employees are entitled to under the term of their contract. Termination of employment short of the notice period would potentially expose your business to wrongful dismissal claims and I would stress the importance of seeking legal advice before such decision is made. However, being a lawyer means that I am risk averse by nature. I would favour an option which does not involve exposing your business to any claim. I would therefore recommend for you to explicitly set out the rules governing the employees’ use of the car by adding a company car policy to your staff handbook. This would need to detail the employee's responsibilities for the car, the rules and procedures regarding the use of the car and payment of expenses. This option would allow you to treat reckless driving as a misconduct and to invite the employees in questions to a disciplinary hearing. I hope the above is of some help and wish you the best of luck.

Sheffield has got the best Barista’ in England and it might also have some of the best independent coffee shops. First for Business looks at some of the best places to talk business over a coffee in the city.

BRAVO BARISTA! THE BEST CUP OF COFFEE IS MADE IN SHEFFIELD – IT’S OFFICIAL!

C

offee connoisseur, Lucia Gadau is celebrating after being named ‘Best Barista’ in England. And Sardinia-born Lucia has revealed the secret to her success checking the weather forecast! Lucia said: “The temperature and humidly outside can have a dramatic effect on the end result. A wet and windy day can be the death knell for quality cup of cappuccino and only a highly trained barista will know what steps to take to ensure the drink is still the very best.” Lucia’s passion for coffee making is legendary at Ecclesall Road’s Nonnas where she works. Nonnas proprietor Maurizio Mori said: “I spotted her attention to detail immediately – if her coffee isn’t one hundred per cent to her liking it won’t be served. “I’m confident of saying we are now serving the very best coffee anywhere in the county. It’s a huge accolade for us.”

1 Tamper Café - Sellars Wheel, 149 Arundel Street and Westfield Terrace. Tamper brings New Zealand’s café culture to the streets of the steel city.

Lucia Gadau

Lucia’s determination to learn and deliver the ultimate blends of coffee have seen her move country twice, learn a new language and even get over the heartache of failed business back in her homeland. Lucia Gadau said: “I believe in absolute perfection in coffee. So many baristas cut corners and serve poor coffee. They don’t use the correct pressure on the machine, don’t use the correct milk consistency, and don’t handle the coffee correctly – these are all precise skills that takes years to learn.” 41-year-old Lucia first started honing her craft when she was just 18 and living in Sardinia. She has her husband to thank for her initial training. Lucia Gadau received her award at the glitzy English Italian Awards 2016 that was held in Manchester. She beat thousands of other baristas from right across the country to win.

2 Depot Bakery - Burton Road. The Depot Bakery is a new kid on the block, opening its doors last year. As well as a great cup of coffee customers can enjoy artisan bread to boot. 3 Marmadukes Café - Norfolk Row. Marmadukes sources coffee from all over the world complemented by fresh milk from local suppliers Our Cow Molly for the perfect cup. 4 Somewhere Else Coffee House Ecclesall Road. A quirky little coffee shop at the Bannercross parade of shops on Ecclesall Road. Opened by a mother and daughter duo with a passion for baking and a penchant for coffee. 5 Bragazzis - Abbeydale Road. Every cup of coffee made at Bragazzis is meticulously prepared by a professional barista using a unique Bragazzi blend. 6 Amici and Bici - Abbeydale Road Amici & Bici opened their doors last summer. The name translates to “Friends and Bikes” and the cafe has quickly built a reputation for great coffee. 7 Upshot Espresso - Glossop Road Upshot only brew coffee that is traceable, sustainable and impeccably roasted. This means as well as enjoying a wonderful cup of coffee when you go to Upshot you are also supporting coffee farming countries and communities in the process. 8 Made by Jonty – Sharrowvale Road With Pete McKee designs adorning its walls Made by Jonty is a bustling café with a distinctly Sheffield feel while its coffee is 100% Arabica beans, ensuring a great tasting cup. 9 Steam Yard – Division Street Steam Yard opened in 2014 by close friends with a shared love of coffee. Its relaxing, calm surroundings make it the ideal place for a business meeting. 10 Gerry’s - South Road, Walkley When owner Gerry retired he found time on his hands to indulge in his passion for baking. Amazingly then in 2013 he decided to come out of retirement and open a bakery. Gerry is now just as popular for its freshly brewed coffee as it is for its baked goodies.

Together with pockets of new housing developments and smaller projects springing up across the city it can only be good news for the City Region’s construction industry.

A further boost for the city centre is the facelift of the Moor. Primark is soon to relocate there as well as four new retailers alongside a 1,500 seat Light Cinema, which will open in spring 2017.

In the last month developers Urban Splash have announced the regeneration of once-notorious estate Park Hill in Sheffield. Another 210 apartments and 330 student housing units are to be built as part of the project which will be completed within five years. Meanwhile there has been further news on the city’s long-awaited retail quarter. HSBC has been confirmed as the first anchor tenant of the £480m scheme. HSBC has taken out a 15-year lease on the building, which will incorporate 140,000 square feet of office space and a rooftop terrace. New shops, restaurants, cafes and bars and landscaped public spaces will make up Sheffield Retail Quarter which should provide plenty of opportunities for the region’s construction industry.

And no story discussing construction in Sheffield would be complete without mentioning the input China is expected to have on the city. Earlier this year following their return from a visit to Sheffield’s sister city of Chengdu in China, the leader and deputy leader of Sheffield City Council announced a 60 year partnership agreement with Sichuan Guodong Construction Group, one of the largest companies in Sichuan Province, who are worth over one billion pounds. The first tranche of funding associated is said to be worth in the region of £220 million and will fund four or five Sheffield city centre projects over the next three years. The exact projects that the investment will fund are yet to be determined but the city region’s construction industry trade should be buoyed by the news of the investment and the other exciting projects and developments. It is hoped that all the builders, plumbers, electricians, joiners, roofers, plasterers, tilers and engineers who operate in the city region will all be able to get a slice of the action.

PLUGGED IN TO THE DIGITAL BOOM SHEFFIELD’S CREATIVE AND DIGITAL INDUSTRY IS A MAJOR SUCCESS STORY WITH THE SECTOR CONTINUING TO GROW. CLARE PARKIN REPORTS ON SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS IN 2016. cross the UK the digital economy is thriving and the Sheffield City Region is playing a key part in that

A growth.

Sheffield and Rotherham are one of 27 digital tech clusters in the UK, being used as a case study evidencing growth in the UK’s digital tech economy. The latest report from Tech City, the Government-backed body which promotes technology in the UK, revealed 14,313 digital tech jobs in Rotherham and Sheffield pumping £273 million Gross

home in the city region or have thrived after starting up in the area. They include Plus Net, WanDisco, Servelec, Localphone and Sumo.

The region benefits from the graduate talent in the city, business support on offer and commercial property.

In a boost to the creative sector the city won the right this year to host the Offset Conference, which was held last month (October). Originally Dublin’s creative festival, it was only the second time the event had come to the UK in a major coup for Sheffield.

It could be the reason why many of the industry’s big names have made their

and vocational conferences for the design and creative industries. This adds to a growing list of major conferences and events which Sheffield now stages including MADE, the entrepreneurial festival being held this month; Doc/Fest, the international documentary film festival, Off The Shelf, one of the UK’s biggest literary festival and Tramlines, the annual music festival which attracts many famous artists. Suitable facilities and opportunities has also helped the city region to develop its creative and digital sectors. The Electric Works at Sheffield Digital Campus offers state-of-the-art accommodation to bring liked-minded individuals together under one roof to share ideas and collaborate. There is also the Sheffield Technology Park which provides facilities and support for new and early-stage technology businesses. Meanwhile the city’s two Universities have several schemes supporting developing businesses as well as producing many of the graduates whose talents can support Sheffield’s economic growth. And just last month Creative Sheffield, Sheffield City Council’s economic development agency announced the appointment of Andrew Bunn and Natalie Fletcher as Business Sheffield Start-up Advisors. The duo have been running the city’s Business Sheffield Gateway service since it launched in 2014. Gateway is the onestop-shop for the whole of Sheffield’s business needs and works by connecting pre-start-up, new and established businesses with free and confidential support to help them set up and grow. Cllr Leigh Bramall, Sheffield City Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for business and the economy, said: “A lot of hard work goes into creating the right environment for businesses to succeed in Sheffield and a big part of this is making sure that the very best support is given to businesses in those early stages. The city has excellent accelerator programmes and strong and supportive business communities. The services we provide through Business Sheffield are crucial in connecting early stage-startups to these communities and supporting them from the foundations up to secure economic growth in the city.”

Matt Cuff ’s innovative Gurgl software

PRESTIGIOUS MADE IN SHEFFIELD AWARD IS THE MARK OF EXCELLENCE FOR GURGL AND DIGITAL SPECIALIST MATT. 2016 has been a particularly good year for Matt Cuff, who established digital agency Switchstance at the city’s Electric Works, six years ago. Since setting up his business the Sheffield Hallam University graduate has secured some big contracts with the likes of Vodaphone and the NHS. But this year ‘Gurgl’, an innovative marketing and sales platform engineered by Switchstance gained international acclaim by achieving the prestigious ‘Made in Sheffield’ mark – an accreditation usually associated with the manufacturing industry. It was an extra special honour for Sheffield-born Matt (38) and he is now part of the organisation’s steering committee as a Digital Specialist. “While Sheffield is traditionally known for its excellence in manufacturing and steel, more recently it has been making its mark in the digital world,” said Matt. “The success of Gurgl underpins Sheffield’s credibility in the digital sector – an industry that is becoming more important as businesses shift towards digitalisation to create growth and success. Having instant access to information is essential for driving businesses forward into the new digitalised world and for gaining competitive advantage.”

Matt Cuff (left) is presented with the Made in Sheffield accolade by committee chairman Charles Turner.

giving businesses a complete picture of their marketing activity, and uses the insights to identify leads, measure ROI and maximise customer engagement. Added Matt: “Our product truly was ‘Made in Sheffield’ as it was engineered over the last three years, and this accreditation acknowledges it as a high quality software product.” Matt’s entrepreneurial route has been more unusual than most. After graduating he spent many years working for the NHS in database management. After becoming self-employed he had the opportunity to tender to create an app containing a national database for diabetes to help GPs make better decisions. He won the contract and the rest as they say is history. Matt said being based at the digital campus had been beneficial to the growth of Switchstance.

“The digital campus is good,” said Matt. “It was set up for us. It would be great to see more collaborations going on with the companies which are based there.

SHEFFIELD TECH FIRM IS ON THE ROAD TO GLOBAL SUCCESS

“People say Sheffield is the digital centre and I would say in many ways it is. Unlike Manchester there are lots of little pockets of digital business across the city.”

The Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire visited The Floow in October to present staff with the 2016 Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category.

Car tracking firm The Floow is ending the year as the holder of one of the most prestigious enterprise awards in business.

A telematics company working with leading insurers across the world, The Floow was named the winner of the award - the UK's highest accolade for business success - this April, in recognition of its ambition to make mobility safer and cheaper for all.

Matt has a number of big projects lined up for 2017 but he admits there is no secret ingredient to business success. “Just perseverance and hard work is the key,” he said.

It is further success for the company which has had a rapid rise to success since launching in 2012. The Floow has grown from a team of just three to 65 today.

Gurgl is being showcased at the Made in Sheffield Exhibition at Millennium Galleries from until 8 January 2017, joining work by more than 100 leading companies to demonstrate and showcase the diversity of design and production in the city region.

Last year the company struck deals with Nissan-Renault and a Chinese firm with 3.2m customers.

The business is best-known for providing analytical insights of drivers' behaviour to global insurers, allowing for accurate and fair insurance pricing. Mr Coombe visited the firm's headquarters at Joiner Street on the Wicker for a tour of the facilities when he also delivered a royal scroll which contains the signature of the Queen and the Prime Minister in recognition of The Floow’s contribution to UK innovation. CEO Aldo Monteforte said: "The Queen's Award for Enterprise provides invaluable recognition and an opportunity to highlight the contribution of telematics insights to more accurate insurance pricing, greater road safety and more cost-effective mobility." Its unique software programme has been developed by a team of expert scientists, engineers, designers and support staff. The company works with major global Insurers including Direct Line Group, RSA, AIG, and AAA. Last year Aldo Monteforte, was chosen to accompany David Cameron on a trade mission to South East Asia.

AVERT THE CRISIS GOOD ADVICE IS ESSENTIAL WHEN MONEY PROBLEMS STRIKE.

I

f you are a company director and you state that your business has run into financial difficulty, it usually means it has run out of cash. In some cases it can come as a shock, especially if trade is brisk and profitable – how can you run out of cash? Of course, there can be a big difference between profit and cash flow and this is particularly true of B2B businesses. If your company manufactures products or provides services and allows credit to its customers, the busier you are the more cash will be tied up in unpaid invoices. In this situation an invoice finance product such as factoring or invoice discounting could be an ideal solution. But that is only one possible cause of a cash shortage. The first step in addressing any financial problem is to identify the root cause. It is often a combination of factors. Let’s assume the company’s average bank balance is deteriorating. It could be the result of: 1 $ % , %+) %$ % , $* )+ ) bad debt, or an interruption in production or trade perhaps caused by a fire or industrial action 1 $ $ %& ( * %$) 0 # / /%+ ( having to carry higher levels of raw

materials or finished stock, are taking longer to collect book debts or are being allowed less credit by suppliers 1 /%+ ( +/ $ & * " * #) %+* % ) flow – perhaps a gradual refurbishment of premises 1 * * ) %&" * $ 0 %( )* ( + A more obvious cause could be that the business is making losses. Previously profitable businesses can easily slip into the red. For a variety of reasons, sales can (%& "%- ( ! , $ * %+" * result of losing a large customer, your product falling out of favour in the market place or your price being uncompetitive. Whatever the underlying cause, it needs to be addressed to reverse the deterioration with cash flow. There are numerous ways of helping struggling businesses. It could be as simple as raising finance. If the company owns premises or plant and equipment in which there is equity, a sale and leaseback arrangement %+" ( " ) #+ $ ) However, this would be pointless unless the underlying causes of the problems had been identified and addressed as the cash injection would be absorbed leaving the company in a worse position with more indebtedness.

In other cases perhaps the company no longer has a viable working business model. For example, there may be historic levels of debt or onerous terms on property leases which can no longer be serviced. Possible solutions could include a Company Voluntary (( $ # $* 0 " ""/ $ $ arrangement with the company’s unsecured creditors to accept a regular payment in reduction of the indebtedness. It has to be an affordable contribution from the company’s viewpoint, which usually means that the creditors accept a -( * % % )%# % * * Another avenue to explore could be a &( & ! # $ )*( * %$ ) ) - ( company is no longer financially viable but the goodwill and business assets are sold to a new company (sometimes, but not always, with the same management team). Although this procedure is seen by some as controversial, it does generally provide a better outcome than liquidation for the creditors and employees. If you are a company director facing financial problems the best advice is to take professional advice as soon as possible whilst there are options available to save your business.

PERSONAL LIABILITY

First for Business NOVEMBER 2016 www.ffb-online.co.uk

COMPANY DIRECTOR? TAKE ADVICE NOW TO LIMIT YOUR PERSONAL LIABILITY.

N

ormally a Director of a Limited Company is not personally responsible for its debts, having the protection of limited liability. However, where a Director of an insolvent company has failed to carry out his/her duties or is guilty of wrongdoing, this protection can be removed leaving the director at risk of disqualification or being sued. During the last twelve months there have been several changes to the rules which could increase the risk a director faces when a company goes into liquidation. The period of time in which the Secretary of State has to issue Directors Disqualification proceedings has increased from two to three years and the matters which the court will consider to determine unfitness has widened. The Secretary of State now has the power to apply to court for a Compensation Order to be made against a disqualified director where that directors actions have caused an identifiable loss to either a specific creditor or to creditors generally. For

example, failure to pay VAT or PAYE for a significant period of time might be something that is pursued using a Compensation Order with any award being paid direct to HM Revenue & Customs. Although due to the timescales involved it will be some time before the first Compensation Order is made, directors should be aware that any future action that they may be subject to will relate to their conduct since 1 October 2015 and therefore they are potentially at risk now. A further change that could increase the

risk for directors is that a Liquidator can now assign to a third party claims that previously could only be exercised by the Liquidator. For example, claims such as preferences or transactions at undervalue. Previously a Liquidator may have decided, for commercial reasons, not to pursue claim. Now it is possible to assign a claim to a third party, such as a creditor, who may be particularly interested and motivated in pursuing the action. What all this means is that the potential risk for a director of an insolvent company has increased and to mitigate that risk it is more important than ever to take advice from an Insolvency Practitioner. Taking advice sooner rather than later will not only limit the personal risk a director faces, by ensuring that they carry out their duties correctly and do not inadvertently commit an offence, but will also increase the prospects of the business or company being restructured and saved. o you know an adrenaline junkie or someone with a sense of adventure? Then why not treat them to a flight at Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s exclusive new helicopter operator, Hummingbird Helicopters?

D

A trial lesson makes a great gift for anyone who is looking for a new hobby, a one-off challenge or even a career change. The lessons start with a one-to-one pre-flight briefing and you will then take to the air, manipulating the dual-flight controls and enjoy views of the Cold War hangars at DSA (formerly RAF Finningley) and its immense 2.8km runway. Introductory flights are a fantastic way to see the beauty of South Yorkshire, the Peak District and the Humber Estuary from the air. Maybe there is somewhere special you would like to fly over (your home, the church where you got married or a famous landmark)? Hummingbird also offer discovery days – a four-hour adventure broken down into both ground school and flight training. This is a real hands-on experience – where budding aviators will spend the majority of their time at the controls of the helicopter. “While safety and integrity are our core principles, our aim is to allow our pilots to enjoy the freedom of flying. Helicopters are incredible vehicles. Once you’ve got your licence, you can land almost anywhere. Country hotels, restaurants, golf courses… the list is endless,” says CEO Helen Spedding. If you would like to treat someone to a birthday, anniversary or Christmas present,

HOW THE EXPERTS AT JESSOP FERTILITY ARE HELPING COUPLES STRUGGLING TO CONCEIVE.

THE JOY OF NEW LIFE Vidya Tamhankar – the latest member of the team at Jessop Fertility – leads the donor egg programme

ringing a baby into the world

one of the most joyful B ismilestones in life, but if a

couple is struggling to conceive, the physical and emotional strain can have a serious impact on their chances of having a baby. That’s why at Jessop Fertility the physical and mental health of couples is at the forefront of all treatments, patients are supported through every stage of the process The team at Jessop Fertility are experts in the field, and work from a purpose-built centre of excellence within the Jessop Wing, part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Opened in 2001, thousands of babies have been brought into the world thanks to the work of the experienced and highly specialised team. Vidya Tamhankar is the latest clinician to join the team at Jessop

Fertility. Vidya first joined the department in 2011, working as a clinical research fellow. She has been involved in several research studies and led in the study looking at the emotional health in patients undergoing assisted conception. During 2013 she worked in the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the Jessop Wing and in 2014, she returned to Jessop Fertility as a consultant. Vidya works alongside Clinical Head Jonathan Skull and other consultants in the unit to provide a full and comprehensive service and active research programme aimed to improve the outcome of treatments The unit has a private entrance and a welcoming reception. During the first visit a couple meets with a Doctor to discuss the best treatment option. The centre offers a full and

comprehensive range of assisted conception techniques such as IVF, Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), and treatment with donor sperm and eggs. The centre utilises all the latest technology such as time lapse with no additional costs for the patients. Having researched the emotional effects of assisted conception on couples, Vidya specialises and leads the centre’s donor egg programme alongside a dedicated nurse specialist. Although many couples have fertility issues some women receive the dreadful news that their own eggs are not suitable for use or they may not produce their own eggs at all. This can be for several reasons. Some women may undergo early menopause or may not produce eggs because they have had cancer treatment or medications in early life. Having the chance to have a family taken away from them is devastating. Their only hope to achieve a pregnancy is to receive donated eggs. Women choose to donate eggs for different

reasons, many have completed their family or just simply want to help others experience the joy of parenthood. Some couples, who need treatment themselves, choose to donate half their eggs in return for a reduction in their treatment costs. Donors can receive up to £750 compensation but many believe giving the gift of life far outweighs the money received. All enquiries to donate are directed to the nurse specialist. After the initial discussion an appointment will be arranged to explain the process in depth. If the donor is suitable to enter the programme an appointment is arranged to see Vidya. At this appointment a detailed medical and family history is taken and the journey begins. The team make sure they take good care of their donors. Donors have appointments with the counsellors to ensure they fully understand the implications of donating and are supported throughout. Vidya sees many women wanting to donate their eggs, and

states ‘it is an amazing gift for them to give’. As well as looking after the donors, Vidya sees couples waiting to receive donor eggs. For Vidya helping and supporting couples through their journey is the best part of her job ‘there is nothing like seeing the joy when they achieve a pregnancy, and then when they return with their baby; it is simply joyous’. Although treatment does result in many babies being born, support is given to those who may not get pregnant straight away, the staff appreciate how upsetting it is when treatment doesn’t work and the medical and nursing team along with the counsellors always offer their full support. If you have ever thought of being an egg or sperm donor you could help our patients achieve their dream of becoming a parent. All enquiries are treated in confidence. For more information about donation you can contact the unit or visit the website, www.jessopfertility.org.uk/donor

While the V8 may not be as powerful as the V12 – 600hp plays 680hp – the V8 has more torque, 561lb ft against 514lb ft, which should make it a more effortless drive. It takes just 3.5 seconds 0-62mph, with a top speed exceeding 199mph. Unlike the GTC4 Lusso, the T is rear-drive only. The all-electric smart

Power from the potent 2.0-litre motor will be sent to all four wheels via either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed flappy paddle job. The Clubman can achieve figures of 41.5mpg on the combined cycle and 154g/km of CO2. Dealerships ar taking orders now priced from £29,345.

GET YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER

TAVERN GARAGE GROUP 1To get the best traction in slippery conditions, it is advisable that your tyres have at least 3mm of tread in the central section of the tyre. 2 Make sure the anti-freeze in your engine is of a high concentration. The fluid should usually be bright pink or dark blue. If it is not strong enough the water in the engine could freeze and cause catastrophic damage. 3 Make sure before you turn your car off at the end of the day that you have switched the windscreen wipers off. If you get back into the car and the windscreen is covered in ice or snow and the wipers come on automatically, it could snap the wiper linkage or even burn out the wiper motor 4 Switch on your air conditioning in the morning to clear the windscreen and windows from condensation. Air conditioning dehumidifies the air blowing onto the screen and will still work even if you turn the temperature up to warm. You will find that by doing this the screen will clear much quicker. Feel free to call into any of our five garages and we will check you are ready for winter. Manchester Road Crosspool, Sheffield, S10 5PL Tel: 0114 266 2408 www.taverngaragegroup.co.uk

IF YOU NEED HIGH-IMPACT BRANDING, SEE CJ SIGNS – THE VEHICLE WRAPPING EXPERTS.

C

J Signs are the vehicle wrapping experts creating a range of highimpact branding pieces for clients - no job is too niche. The company prides itself on creating innovative and bespoke pieces for a host of projects from fleets of minis, transit vans and even internationally - recently working on two G55 models bound for the USA. Earlier this year Harlaxton Engineering Services Ltd asked the company to create a vehicle wrap based on the custom hand-painted helmet design for Ginetta racing driver Tom Hibbert. The project had a six week timeline and had to be

completed ready for a race at Oulton Park. With no brand guideline or artwork to follow other than the helmet itself CJ Signs pushed their design and development skills to the limit. The project was unique and produced a real head-turner on the grid. Jason Bell, MD of CJ Signs said, “We have worked extensively with Ginetta cars since 2005 and are regularly approached by them and the drivers who run their own teams to do the vehicle design and wrap in preparation for the race calendar. “Richard and his son Tom came to us because of our established relationship with Ginetta and our ability to work efficiently, meet and exceed the expectations of

our clients and because we have the skills and expertise to deliver a complex design project like this with ease.” Rich Hibbert, from Harlaxton Engineering Services Ltd said: “Working with CJ Signs was a great experience, from discussions about the design to wrap install itself. “We expected a high standard from the start, but they did exceed our expectations in the design and also in their overall customer care and communication which was excellent. Ultimately they are a great team to work with and we happily give them 10/10 for the results and how we were treated.”

T

Across the Sheffield City Region this December work colleagues will be pulling on their glad rags, getting out the Christmas crackers and enjoying a tipple or two together. But the key to a really good Christmas work party is to make sure it is booked well in advance so you are not left to find every venue is fully booked and the only option is an office party dancing around the photocopier to Wham. A well organised Christmas party in a quality venue can give dedicated, hardworking staff something to look forward as the year draws to a close. It can be a great bonding experience and good for team morale. If you are short on ideas of what to do

and where to host your Christmas party this year take a look at some of the venues showcased here. It does not have to be manager who takes on the task of booking the Christmas party either. Why not hand it over to the party-planner of the office, the one who loves to socialise. They will probably relish the task of getting everyone on board and booking a truly fantastic Christmas party. So whether it’s a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings at a cosy pub, a lavish five-course banquet at a top restaurant, a dinner and dance evening or a themed party night, there are plenty of venues across the Sheffield City Region that can accommodate your plans whether you are a small business with a handful of staff or a huge organisations with hundreds of employees. BROCCO ON THE PARK SCOOPS TRADE ‘OSCAR’ IN GOOD HOTEL GUIDE’S PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS.

B

rocco on the Park has been named City Hotel of the Year, by the Good Hotel Guide, the UK’s wholly independent guide to the UK’s best hotels. The Good Hotel Guide, co-edited by Adam Raphael and M. Astella Saw, awards 10 Césars each year to the most celebrated hoteliers who have demonstrated excellence in their field. Known as the Oscars of the hotel industry, the awards are named after Cesar Ritz. A beautiful, boutique hotel which boasts quality food, a luxury bolt hole and friendly service, Brocco on the Park was described by the judges to offer, ‘a Scandichic interior and buzzy neighbourhood kitchen serving adventurous cuisine…this handsome Edwardian villa has eight bedrooms and welcomes guests with cupcakes.’

Co-editor Adam Raphael comments: “The Guide is an unbiased selection of the best hotels, inns and B&Bs with personality and character across the UK and Ireland. Hotels are chosen solely on merit and the entries are rewritten each year. Readers’ reports are painstakingly scrutinisted and reports from inspectors are based on anonymous visits. ” M. Astella Saw adds: “This year’s César award winners reflect the rising standards of hotel-keeping across the country. All 10 properties have been chosen for their immaculate service, warm welcome, fine hospitality and memorable individuality.” Brocco on the Park, the only hotel in

Yorkshire to have been recognised in this year’s César awards, was opened in 2014 by owner Tiina Carr. Tiina commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have achieved this award, for both ourselves and the city of Sheffield. We have worked extremely hard to bring some special to the city and are extremely proud of what we have accomplished.” www.brocco.co.uk

GIFTS GALORE

HOW TO PLAY SANTA TO YOUR IMPORTANT CUSTOMERS AND CLIENTS.

C

hristmas is a great opportunity to present gifts to your company’s clients to show your appreciation for their custom during the year and strengthen relationships. Customising gifts for clients as much as possible is a good way of making the recipient feel special. Pay attention to each client’s habits or if you’re unsure get some information from staff who have dealt with them. For instance, if a client orders wine during dinner meetings, it is a safe choice. If you’ve met with the client over golf or at a football match then perhaps something related to those sports could be suitable.Or perhaps if you have got to know them well and know of their hobbies then a gift connected to their leisure time could really impress. Choosing personalised or unique gifts this

Christmas can help to symbolise the value of the relationship with your customers and recognise their value to your business. If there are too many clients to consider individual-buying then look for more general items, but beware corporate branded goods can appear impersonal. Businesses should beware too of sending a gift that’s too expensive or valuable, it can imply that you're trying to buy the customer's business. When it comes to showing gratitude for that personal relationship, less expensive is often best. If you want to show your appreciation to your customers with the perfect gift this Christmas that will leave a positive lasting impression then look no further. Over the next few pages we have compiled some great ideas to suit a range of budgets.

A MONTHLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS, ACHIEVEMENTS, CELEBRATIONS AND NEW FACES

NEW MASTER CUTLER TAKES OVER Sheffield has welcomed its latest Master Cutler in a tradition dating back to 1624. Richard Edwards was installed following a ceremony at the Cutlers’ Hall and Sheffield Cathedral attended by several hundred Freemen and Friends of the Company. The new Master, who was born and brought up in Sheffield, said he saw the coming year as one with challenges but also opportunities. “Devolution, for example, could be an opportunity for a dynamic elected mayor to create a positive climate for investors to increase wealth and job creation,” he said. “In addition, we, as manufacturers, welcome the concept of the Northern Powerhouse. The great cities of Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds need to compete globally while at the same time being seen as both different from and complementary to London. For this to happen, good transport links are vital. The issue of HS2 needs to be firmly resolved, but we should not forget that 70 per cent of all goods are transported by road. For the Northern Powerhouse to succeed

the road network needs substantial investment from central government.” The new Master reiterated the request of previous Masters that the government produce a clear, long-term industrial strategy to reduce uncertainty and encourage investment. He said it was of particular urgency given the steel crisis of the past year and exit from Europe. The Master Cutlers’ Challenge this coming year will be in aid of the

Children’s Hospital and Cavendish Cancer Care. It will be led by the new Mistress Cutler, Julie Edwards. The Cutlers Company was formed in August 1624 to protect the city’s craftsmen and their craft. It now represents the wider manufacturing interests of the region. There has been a Master Cutler in an unbroken line since the formation of the Company.

Matthew’s win at the awards ceremony, held at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, follows his success last year when the 23-year-old took second place as a first-year apprentice. Dave Heptinstall, Stagecoach Yorkshire Engineering Director, said: “The Stagecoach apprentice scheme is recognised as one of the best in the bus industry so we are delighted to have such skilled and committed people like Matthew in our team. “It is great to see his efforts and enthusiasm rewarded for a second year and we hope he enjoys his visit to Sweden where we’re sure he will enhance his skills and knowledge even further.” 46 First For Business | www.sheffieldvibe.com

COMMUTERS CUT BACK ON CAR USE THANKS TO BUSINESS PARK’S GREEN INITIATIVE More South Yorkshire commuters are opting to leave their cars at home in favour of a growing number of sustainable transport methods, thanks to a green initiative being managed by the Sheffield Business Park. The latest figures from a travel survey carried out by the site, located just off Junction 33 of the M1 on the Sheffield Parkway, show that the total number of people driving to and from work alone has decreased over the last two years, whereas those choosing to car share have increased. In addition, the statistics show that people choosing to walk to the office is also on the up, and cycling is a more popular choice than it was when the initiative was initially rolled out in 2004. Already home to more than 2,000 workers, with capacity to house up to 5,000 once future development work has been completed, the park’s green initiative is supported by sustainable travel planning consultants TPS. The latest travel survey shows that almost 20 per cent of 2,000 employees based at Sheffield Business Park now use a more sustainable method of getting to work than driving alone including vehicle sharing, public transport and walking or cycling.

DONCASTER DEVELOPMENT ATTRACTS SME TENANTS Only two high specification business units remain at a new Doncaster business park built via £1.4m of European funding to attract SMEs to the region. Developer Carnell Management Services Ltd accessed grant funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to make the Bullrush Business Park development viable and help build 13 new high specification units. According to agents Knight Frank, demand for the units has been high with four new businesses moving onto site and two more units currently under offer, leaving just two units at 4,000 and 12,000 sq ft each available. Paul Carnell, from Carnell Management Services Ltd, said: "We were confident in the Doncaster economy in building these high class, quality industrial units. The development has proved very popular. “The ERDF was aimed at kick starting projects to strengthen economic and social cohesion targeting SMEs in sectors including advanced manufacturing, creative and digital media, sports technologies, and medical and health. This has happened at Bullrush and the funding proved invaluable in making the build happen.” Doncaster has undergone a variety of exciting developments taking advantage of its central location from recent key projects such as the airport, Doncaster Racecourse, Keepmoat Stadium and the Frenchgate Interchange to new projects that are currently under construction such as the Civic and Cultural Quarter.

Quidco is opening new premises in Sheffield

MAPLE SYRUP MEDIA LOOK TO THEIR ROOTS FOR NEW HOME Maple Syrup Media group has chosen to continue its rapid expansion plans for UK-based consumer business Quidco with brand new premises in Sheffield. Quidco, the UK’s leading cashback platform, was co-founded by Paul and Jennifer Nikkel in 2005 whilst they were studying at the University of Sheffield, and alongside this brand new customer and marketing hub, the group retains a London office on the Silicon Roundabout in Shoreditch. Maple Syrup Media (MSM) has taken an 8,750 sq ft first floor office at the Fountain Precinct, Sheffield, in anticipation of the group’s rapid growth plans, almost trebling its current 3,000 sq ft premises in the city with the help of the Sheffield office of Knight Frank. Dominic Butterell, Customer Services Director, said: “MSM has grown rapidly over the last few years. We looked back to our Yorkshire roots for our new, bigger premises as it is such a high-value location that is fantastic value for money.” Quidco.com, the first cashback service launched, was created in 2005 with the initial objective of creating a community for helping students save money shopping online. Over the last decade, the UK core business has evolved and the website now serves close to seven million members, working with 4,300 of the biggest names on the high street and in ecommerce. SHEFFIELD HEALTH FIRM SCOOPS NATIONAL AWARD FOR FIFTH TIME Westfield Health has triumphed at a top industry awards event to retain the title of Best Health Cash Plan Provider – for the fifth year running. The Sheffield-based health and wellbeing company beat tough industry competition to secure the award at the Investment Life & Pensions Moneyfacts Awards in London. Representatives of the ARMC, Ricardo and University of Sheffield at the signing of the MoU

RICARDO AND AMRC SIGN TEAM UP AS WORK STARTS ON POWERTRAIN ELECTRIFICATION PROJECTS The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global engineering company Ricardo. As global specialists in transport, security, energy, scarce resources and waste, Ricardo has extensive experience of working within a variety of ground transportation sectors, such as automotive, commercial and industrial vehicles, motorsport, motorcycles and rail. The AMRC aims to develop innovative products and manufacturing methods for the automotive and vehicle production industry that will increase capacity, capability and competitiveness for UK companies. The group’s longer term goal is to maintain the UK automotive industry as a world leader in advanced low emission powertrain and vehicle production.

Executive Director David Capper said: “We’re incredibly proud to have held on to this accolade once again. “It’s been a busy year for Westfield Heath. We’ve moved into our new HQ, expanded into new markets in health, wellbeing and care, and we’ll have exciting new product news to announce soon. We’re committed to continually innovating and improving our offering and this award is a real testament to that.” The ceremony took place at a gala dinner hosted by television presenter and radio personality Claudia Winkleman at the Lancaster London Hotel.

The MoU builds on a relationship between the AMRC and Ricardo, which started with Ricardo sponsoring a programme of doctoral students supported by the University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Engineering and AMRC. These students are jointly investigating electric motor design and manufacture. The MoU will bring about a more comprehensive period of collaboration to cover joint research and development projects. Professor Keith Ridgway CBE, Executive Chairman of the AMRC Group, said: “I am delighted that the initial collaboration with Ricardo has developed to this stage and look forward to collaboration and a wide range of automotive projects. It is important for the Sheffield City Region and UK as a whole that the AMRC develops in this direction.”

RECORD-BREAKING QUARTER FOR YORKSHIRE Record breaking numbers of visitors holidayed and spent money in Yorkshire between April and June this year, according to new figures. Yorkshire saw a ten per cent increase in visits (from April to June) to 361,000 – the highest quarter for the county since records began in 1961 – says Visit Britain. Spending by visitors was up by eight per 48 First For Business | www.sheffieldvibe.com

cent to £145million, which was also a record for an April-to-June period for Yorkshire. Countries with an increase in Yorkshire-bound visitors included Spain, the Republic of Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Canada and Poland. The news comes just days after Yorkshire was chosen to host the 2019 UCI Road World Championships, which will potentially see millions of visitors descend

on the county for eight days of worldclass cycle racing over nine days. Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “We’ve worked hard to promote the county as a world class destination and I have no doubt that the Tour de Yorkshire, which took place in this time bracket, had a part to play in boosting visitor numbers and spend.”

LADIES TAKE AIM AT HAYTON CASTLE Yorkshire Fillies was created to fill the yawning gap of opportunities for ladies living in the north to shoot clays. However, continually having to drive for hours to find a ladies’ shoot in what is still a male dominated sport got Louise Alford's mind working and Yorkshire Fillies was born. From approaching friends for the first shoot, many of whom had never shot before, by the third ladies’ day, the event had attracted interest from far and wide. The latest event was held at Hayton Castle shooting ground near Retford. For many of the ladies, who had never lifted a gun, confidence quickly rose under expert coaching. Everyone shot a fair amount of clays. Guns were provided, everyone received a safety briefing and there was a real sense of camaraderie and achievement. These events are not just about the shooting though. After the shooting, homemade quiches, cakes and other tempting treats are washed down with glasses of fizz. The raffle raises funds for Louise's chosen charity, WorkLtd, in Sheffield. Momentum is growing – the next shoot in November is almost sold out already. No special gear is needed, just turn up and get shooting. Check out the Yorkshire Fillies’ Facebook and Twitter pages and get involved.

10 THINGS…

10 THINGS... I HOPE TO ACHIEVE DURING MY YEAR AS MASTER CUTLER BY RICHARD EDWARDS.

I

n a tradition that dates back 392 years Richard Edwards has been named the new Master Cutler. Richard, an engineer and manufacturer, ran G & J Hall, one of the oldest tool manufacturing businesses in the city until its sale in November 2015. Here he discusses ten plans for the year ahead.

1 Promoting and support

Sheffield City Region as a place to invest and have things made. Sheffield is a great place and the Master Cutler has a fantastic platform to promote it. I like my predecessors, plan to exploit this platform to make this point wherever possible.

2 Getting Sheffield's message on

BREXIT across to those with influence. We need to get ensure that messages from outside the Westminster “bubble” are heard in particular those from the manufacturing sector. I will work with others to ensure that our messages are clear and use my platform to get them across.

3 Supporting and encouraging

an Industrial Strategy. Last year, I told Sajid Javid, the then Business Secretary, that we needed an Industrial Strategy. It seems that, at last, the message has got through and that government is now working towards one. We need to ensure that labour, international trade and energy are included.

4 Supporting Devolution for the

Sheffield City Region. There will be a South Yorkshire Mayor in May next year. We need to maintain support for the Devolution achieved with such hard work and make the most of it.

50 First For Business | www.sheffieldvibe.com

I look forward to being involved in this going forward.

5 Trade Mission to Dubai.

In conjunction with the International Trade Forum, we will be running a Trade Mission to Dubai next year. The plan is to set out our stall prior to World Expo there in 2020 but with a view to bringing business to Sheffield between now and then.

6 Continued development of the

Cutlers’ Better Learners – Better Workers as a City Region wide education scheme. This is storming ahead. The scheme is well established and a great success in Sheffield and is now being taken up in Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. It is employer led and is helping to provide youngsters with the skills that business needs in this Region. It is a great pleasure to watch young people in our Region develop on this scheme.

7 Mistress Cutlers’ Challenge.

Every year, there is a Challenge to raise funds for local charities. This year the Challenge will be run by the Mistress

‘Last year, I told Sajid Javid, the then Business Secretary, that we needed an Industrial Strategy. It seems that, at last, the message has got through and that government is now working towards one.’

Cutler, Julie – my wife. I am looking forward to supporting her in all the charitable activities throughout the year and raising money for excellent causes. I am always humbled by the effort that many people put into charitable work and look forward to working with them. The main charities this year are Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Cavendish Cancer Care but a proportion of the money raised will be set aside for donations to smaller charities in the City Region.

8 Maintaining relationships

across the Region. I have already had great fun meeting people from across the Region and look forward to working with them in order to ensure that we get the best result. This may be challenging but, as Master Cutler, I have the advantage that I am apolitical and have no agenda beyond doing the best for the Region.

9 Enjoying the year and the

opportunities it provided. There is a duty to being Master and Mistress Cutler. We would wish to contribute to the region during our year. However, we have already discovered that there are masses of opportunities to do things which are rare and an enormous privilege. Both Julie and I intend to do as much as we can and enjoy the experience as much as possible.

10 Leaving the Company in even

better shape than I found it. The Company is in very good heart and I am grateful to Craig McKay and other Past Masters for ensuring that this is the case. I intend to carry on the good work and look forward to handing it over at the end of my year having maintained the status quo at least and improved things in some areas.
