A GARDEN for every season

As summer fades, thoughtful garden design is proving that outdoor living needn’t end with the last long evening. FOR LANDMARK ST LEGER Five of the past seven winners of the Betfred St Leger Stakes have been favourites, but could we finally see a trainer other than Aidan O’Brien in the winners enclosure?

altese Cross was installed as favourite to land the historic 250th Betfred St Leger Stakes after an eye-catching Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes success. The William Haggas-trained son of Sea The Stars stayed on strongly at York to see off Aidan O’Brien’s Pierre Bonnard and Christmas Day. Maltese Cross won by two lengths after surging to the front under Tom Marquand in the premier St Leger trial at the Ebor meeting.

That came despite giving away a 5lb penalty on the back of an impressive Group 1 victory in the Cygames Grand de Paris success at Longchamp. Trainer Haggas was left to ponder whether Maltese Cross would but sent to Doncaster on September 12 or head for a shot at the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Bookmakers reacted to that Group 2 triumph at York by slashing the odds for the George Waud-owned Maltese Cross to win the St Leger to around 5/2.

Haggas said: “I thought he came there well. Tom said he went too early, which I think he did but he got drawn into it because Ryan (Moore, on Christmas Day) set off and he did very well." Skipton-born Haggas added: "I think that was probably a career best. He showed a nice turn of foot last time in Paris which we didn't think he had." “The horse is growing up and he's getting better.” Haggas has never trained a St Leger Stakes winner, but it is a very different

Relentless O’Brien’s ST LEGER STRANGLEHOLD A quarter of a century since his first BetFred St Leger Stakes triumph, the great Aidan O'Brien is targeting a landmark success in the 250th edition of the prestigious race.

hen Aidan O’Brien celebrated his first Betfred St Leger Stakes victory, he could surely not have envisaged returning 25 years later eyeing a 10th triumph in the world’s oldest Classic. It was back in 2001 when Milan gave the legendary Irish trainer a maiden St Leger triumph at Doncaster under Mick Kinane. A quarter of a century on, O’Brien has gone on to rack up a staggering nine victories in the prestigious Group 1 for thoroughbred colts and fillies in South Yorkshire. Scandinavia secured a third successive St Leger win for the 56year-old great last year, keeping the juggernaut rolling after Jan Brueghel’s 2024 success and Continuous crossing the line first in 2023. Three of the top four to finish the St Leger last year were trained by O’Brien, with Scandinavia – ridden by Tom Marquand in the absence of the injured Ryan Moore and the suspended Wayne Lordan – holding off a strong-finishing Rahiebb ahead of Stay True and Lambourn. The Ballydoyle handler has a stranglehold on the final British Classic of the season, and he will take some stopping again when the 250th edition of the race is staged on 12 September. Nine of the 27 entries declared for the eagerly awaited St Leger are trained by the prolific O’Brien, with Christmas Day leading many of the ante-post markets. For O’Brien’s rivals, it is a case of

different year but the same old conundrum: just how do we go about ending the Coolmore dominance? He has produced a winning machine that is very hard to stop, with a seemingly unwavering drive to continue taking on all-comers and write new chapters in an astonishing career. Over 150 UK and Irish Classic winners have been amassed by Coolmore – billed as ‘the home of champions’, with plenty of evidence to back that up. There has been more than a sense of deja vu seeing O’Brien in the winners enclosure at Town Moor – and so many other courses far and wide – over the years. He continues to churn out some of the best horses in the world from his County Tipperary base and there is no sign of that changing. Christmas Day, ridden by Ronan Whelan, won The Derby at Epsom in June and is sure to be well backed, while Pierre Bonnard was third in the Irish Derby. Benvenuto Cellini won that race at The Curragh in June and was also declared as another potential strong O’Brien contender in South Yorkshire. Montreal and Causeway are among the other horses O’Brien put forward for the St Leger, such is the embarrassment of riches he has in his armoury. Not since Roger Varian saddled Eldar Eldarov to a St Leger win in 2022 has any other trainer prevented

O’Brien from taking the St Leger honours yet again. The William Haggas-trained Maltese Cross appears to be the most likely to halt O’Brien’s winning streak this time around, although Joseph O’Brien could keep it in the family. O’Brien’s son, who won the St Leger with Galileo Chrome back in 2020, is strongly represented with five entries – headed by Limestone and Enceladus. John and Thady Gosden’s Point of Law could be another threat to O’Brien’s chances of landing a 10th St Leger victory – and would be a popular winner for the King and Queen. But there will be many wary of backing against horse racing’s royalty O’Brien moving into double figures in his relentless pursuit of major honours. He became Ireland’s youngest ever Champion Trainer back in 1996, a

title he has held continuously since 1998. In 2001 O’Brien became the youngest ever Champion British trainer and over two decades on, that steely determination to be perched at the top of three tree remains. Calm, collected and composed, the County Wexford-born O’Brien will go down as one of the greatest trainers the sport has ever seen – with an incredible longevity. The Champion Amateur Jockey of 1993-94 saddled a winner on his first day as a licensed trainer – and he has never looked back. So highly driven and a master of his craft, O’Brien continues to look forward with such hunger for many more honours. If he wins the main event at the St Leger meeting yet again to make it four in row, it will not be long before O’Brien will be thinking about taking his remarkable tally to 11.

In fact, Lord Rockingham’s bay )) &Allabaculia, won the inaugural running of the race. We are linking up to provide visitors to the racecourse with special access to Wentworth Woodhouse and likewise the team at the racecourse will be promoting the work of the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust. It’s a really positive partnership, with both organisations using our historical links to work together to promote the very best of South Yorkshire. Bawtry Podiatry ON THE MARCH A decade after starting out, Bawtry Podiatry has come a long way and continues to keep clients of all ages on the move.

reat strides have been made at Bawtry Podiatry as the family business proudly celebrate their 10th anniversary. September marks a decade since Karen Ramsey started out as Bawtry Foot Clinic in a room at Milandas Hairdressers. She was joined by her daughter, Kathryn, two years later and they set about growing the clinic - expanding a loyal base of clients. The venture has been such a success that they now have six treatment rooms, two waiting areas and a large retail space in a former Natwest Bank on Bawtry High Street. There was a rebrand from Bawtry Foot Clinic to Bawtry Podiatry when they moved from Pinders Court in October 2024, better reflecting the full scope of the care and services provided. Kathryn Ramsey said: “We’re still built on the same foundations: providing the best possible care for our patients, offering a personal service and making sure everyone who walks through our doors feels welcome. “It has been lovely to grow the clinic with my Mum as a family business. “It’s no longer just Mum and me. We work alongside around six other practitioners, including podiatrists, a physiotherapist and soft-tissue specialists. We also have holistic practitioners joining us, which we’re really looking forward to. “Our aim has always been to look beyond one isolated problem and consider the whole person, so having different practitioners working together allows us to offer a much broader approach to health and movement. “On average, we see around 30-35 patients a day for podiatry and then more with the other disciplines that work within the clinic. “Prevention is becoming increasingly important. Regular appointments allow us to identify changes early, offer advice and hopefully prevent minor concerns from developing into painful or recurring problems.

“Our feet support us and play an essential part in keeping us active and independent, but they are often overlooked until something becomes painful. “You don’t necessarily need to have an existing problem to benefit from seeing a podiatrist. It could simply be an annual ‘foot MOT’ to check that everything is healthy, answer any questions and provide advice about footwear, skin and nail care or changes you may have noticed. “The ultimate aim of podiatry is to help people remain pain-free, mobile and able to continue doing the things they enjoy. “We treat an incredibly broad age range; from children as young as two to patients over 100 - our oldest patient has been 102. “That variety is one of the best parts of the job. We meet some fascinating people

and get to hear about their lives, careers, travels and experiences.” Kathryn added: “People are becoming much more focused on maintaining their health rather than waiting until something goes wrong. We’re seeing greater awareness of the importance of exercise, lifestyle and preventative care. “This may partly be a response to the pressures on the NHS, but with social media and having so much health information at our fingertips have also made people more aware about their self-care and investing in their health.” Bawtry Podiatry has gone from strength to strength over the past decade, and the team would like to thank their wonderful patients and the local community for their continued support.
