A primary school experience laying the foundations for an exciting education.
The Queen Ethelburga’s educational journey begins in Chapter House, a small school with a family atmosphere for children aged 3 months to 10 years. Safely nestled within the wider school estate which caters for students up to Year 13, Chapter House provides a home from home for children to begin their own learning journey through imaginative play and inspiring lessons, cared for by an expert team.
In Chapter House, discoveries are not limited to the classroom. Playtimes and evenings are a time for fun with friends and the chance to learn new skills
mindfulness, sign and sing, and newspaper club. Class teachers get to know each child in their care, tailoring their teaching
learning style.
At the school, all primary students study Spanish and Mandarin each week under the tutelage of native speakers from Year 1 and have regular swimming lessons in the onsite 25m swimming pool. They partake in cooking and baking classes in a specialist food technology room and have forest school lessons in a dedicated woodland
forest school teacher. In addition, all pupils follow a sports programme under specialist coaches that focuses on multi-skills to keep every individual motivated and engaged in physical activity and sports. Each year they compete in the annual Sports Day in groups known as houses which creates a real sense of belonging and camaraderie, no matter their ability, and older students
workshops which develop their skills further.
Every new starter is assessed so that an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) can be created for them, tailoring the support they receive. This can mean helping bring them up through extra support sessions, individual tuition by learning support specialists or differentiated learning plans.
ILPs also identify gifted areas and help us to push children through accelerated learning clubs or talent-focused enrichment clubs.
Above all, Chapter House is a family feel school that keeps its class sizes small, so that children have up to 50 per cent more teacher contact time than larger classes. We also pride ourselves on parent communication through parent meetings and reports every half term, rather than the standard twice a year, and daily EYFS updates on Tapestry.
Thinking of an independent education for your child? Come along to our Open Day
our personalised approach to your child’s education. Visit qe.org to book your place.

The Dakota Deluxe has brought a touch of luxury to Newcastle’s Quayside, writes Richard Abbey.

I like to think I’m past all those types puzzled looks.
But while this North East gem might often be described as the ultimate party city, there’s much more to Newcastle than drinking, dancing and doner kebabs in the Bigg Market.
The city has culture in abundance; from the castle and cathedral to a wealth of galleries and museums. Shopping offers a good mix of independent boutiques and high street names, and of course there’s the Metro Centre not too far away. Newcastle’s Metro network also means it’s really easy to reach all parts of the city and surrounding areas, including coastal spots such as Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. The former is well worth a visit and has its own castle and priory to explore as well as gorgeous sandy beaches and a buntingstrewn high street.
We arrived in Newcastle on a sunny
afternoon, passing the Angel of the North after leaving the A1 and travelling across the Tyne Bridge to reach our destination for the

It’s a curious building, U-shaped with a huge forecourt out front which gives it a sense of grandeur. Chatting to the very helpful reception team, I was told it used to the deluxe treatment.
You’d never know.
The quiet interior, all dark and mysterious, feels luxurious from the moment you step through the door. This was echoed in our room, a Classic King which had a stunning archway window with views over the River Tyne and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
It was a good size, with a huge king-size bed dominating the space as well as two armchairs and table, which sat under the archway. The bathroom had both a bath and walk-in shower as well as toiletries from Molton Brown. Tea and coffee facilities also included an espresso machine, as well as fresh milk and drinks in the fridge. The had all the familiar streaming services as as standard.
Not that we were planning on spending too much time in the room given there was a city to explore and we’d picked

Thirst quenched, we headed back to the hotel to change for dinner after making a reservation in its restaurant, The Grill.

Sides and sauces have to added for an extra charge.
We started with some tempura padron peppers (£8) before tucking into a king scallop (£18), which was presented beautifully with pork cheek and apple, and chicken ravioli (£13) which came with a carbonara-esque sauce of pancetta, parmesan and egg yolk.
For the main event I tucked into a perfectly-cooked medium-rare 340g New York Strip steak (£75) whilst my wife opted for the 350g Secreto Ibérico pork steak
(£36). We added sides of chunky chips and a rocket and parmesan salad (both £6) as well as some tenderstem broccoli (£7.50), which was served with sesame and soy.
The quality of everything we ate was superb, the steak melt-in-the-mouth and we really loved the dining space, which featured a mix of booths, banquettes and regular tables, all very intimate and indulgent.

DETENTION explores the impact of SECTION 28: a piece of largely hidden legislation from Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Government in 1988, which ‘prohibited the promotion of homosexuality’, forcing people from the LGBT+ community into a place of secrecy, fear and shame at a time when the country was in industrial turmoil and the gay community was being ravaged by the onslaught of AIDS.
Gary Clarke’s powerful and personal working-class storytelling draws on public and private stories and testimonies, including a rare insight into the LGBT+ Switchboard Logbooks, combined with vivid choreography performed by a company of exceptional dancers, an evocative narrator, a local cast of LGBT+
and costume and music tracks by the iconic band TEST DEPT. DETENTION is a bold and moving exploration of the violence, loneliness, protests, debates, unlikely allies and the remarkable individuals and organisations of the time.
