Celebrating 30 years of LAKESIDE VILLAGE
The popular shopping destination will be marking three decades with a special celebration in August.
icture this: It’s 1996, the Spice Girls are at the top of the charts, the Euros are coming to England, and the question on everyone’s lips is ‘Oasis or Blur?’ It was a peak time for British culture and, in South Yorkshire, a much-loved Doncaster landmark was also getting set to open its doors.
Lakeside Village Outlet Shopping on White Rose Way was unveiled to the public as The Yorkshire Outlet on 15 August 1996 and today, 30 years on, it remains a leading shopping destination for visitors and the local community alike.
This year, the centre is gearing up to celebrate this impressive milestone, marking its 30th birthday with a whole host of activities and entertainment planned for the coming months.
“We’re so excited to be reaching the grand old age of 30 this year,” says Lyndsey Parry, centre manager at Lakeside Village.
“So much has happened over that period, from cultural shifts to changes in fashion, household trends, the way people shop and more, not to mention major events such as
the pandemic, which had a dramatic impact on retail.
“To still be at the heart of the South Yorkshire community and going strong is a fantastic achievement.
“The centre has really evolved over the years and has grown to become a real destination for people, be it families looking for a day out, shoppers, or groups of friends or colleagues meeting for a coffee and a bite to eat.
“The team work very hard to make Lakeside Village a great place to visit, with outstanding facilities and stores on offer, and reaching this milestone is testament to that.”
Now home to more than 45 stores offering discounts and great value all yearround, some retailers have been on site since day one, including Clarks Outlet.
Others have joined in more recent years, enhancing the centre’s offering with bigname brands such as Skechers, The Body Shop, Saltrock and Radley.
And the centre regularly gives local artisan makers a platform too, with its Artisan and Craft Fayre taking place regularly.
Lyndsey added: “One area we’ve really established at Lakeside Village over the years is our work with the local community, including the independent and home-based makers, bakers and creators who come along to our monthly Artisan and Craft Fayres.
“We’ve also established strong links with community causes as well, including RSPCA Doncaster, Bluebell Wood and Cats Protection Doncaster.
“As we look ahead, these community ties will only strengthen, along with our commitment to a sustainable future for the centre, too.
“Minimising our environmental impact is a top priority for us, with initiatives such as our Green Zone in Guest Services providing a place for people to donate and commitment for us in the coming years.”
Lakeside Village will be marking its 30th birthday with a family-friendly celebration at the centre on Saturday 15 August.

Making a DIFFERENCE
The Rotary Club of Rotherham are hosting a special event with Our Dementia Choir.
There are over 850,000 people in the UK who live with a form of dementia, and despite the progress being made in the search for a cure, it is unlikely to come quick enough to help them. For these people, what’s essential dementia.
‘Our Dementia Choir’ began as part of a documentary created for BBC1 in 2018. The two-part series saw acclaimed actress Vicky McClure take us on a deeply personal journey where she sets out to discover the true extent of music’s power in combatting dementia.
Vicky knows only too well the cruelty of dementia, having helped care for her grandma who died in 2015. Vicky also saw the amazing effect that music had in calming her down as well as giving glimpses of the old Nana.
Vicky formed a choir of people all living with dementia in her hometown of Nottingham to see whether music can make a measurable difference in their lives in
2018… The result: Our Dementia Choir (ODC).
Joining forces with some of the country’s leading experts, the Choir took part in

The Choir has had such an immeasurably positive effect that its members have
The ODC now performs regularly around the country, from small intimate gatherings to large-scale events. They have appeared at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham Forest football ground, the Cavern in Liverpool and a host of community venues around the Nottinghamshire region. They have recorded at Abbey Studios including the renowned single “What’s Your Story”.
In something of a coup, the Rotary Club of Rotherham are thrilled to be welcoming
the Our Dementia Choir to Greasbrough Club on 21 March, led by their musical director, Daniela Smith. On the evening, the ODC will be supported by local choir, Friends in Harmony, in turn led by Graham Cowley.
Friends in Harmony is a friendly, sociable choir which has grown to around 60 members. Graham has many years’ experience with choral groups and musical theatre.
Tickets are £12 and can be purchased at Greasbrough Club or online at Ticket Source (see QR code). They can also be bought from event sponsors KCM Waste Management or on the day.

We spoke to three of the ballet’s leading stars: Gemma Coutts, who plays Anne Lister; Rachael Gillespie playing the part of Ann Walker; and Saeka Shirai as Marianna Lawton.
Tell us a bit about your dance journey, how long have you been dancing with Northern Ballet?

Rachael: Her strength, courage and intelligence really stood out for me.
To step out of social expectations to be her true self is so brave and empowering.
Saeka: I had some awareness of Anne Lister before working on the ballet, and what struck me most was her courage.
How have you found the process of working with Annabelle Lopez Ochoa (choreographer) to create the ballet and originate this role?
Gemma: I have really enjoyed working with Annabelle. She is a passionate woman who knows what she wants. This means that we work quickly and with purpose, which suits my style and has allowed us to really dive into the roles.
Saeka: It’s been an inspiring and collaborative process. She knows very clearly what she wants, which I found very similar to Anne Lister herself. That clarity made the creative process focused
and exciting, especially when originating a new role.
What are you most looking forward to about performing - do you have a favourite place to visit?
Gemma: I am looking forward to performing in London as my family are coming to watch all the way from Indonesia. I always enjoy my time in London as I get to see many friends from my English National Ballet School days.

Are you excited to be premiering in Leeds, portraying a real person and story rooted here in Yorkshire?
Rachael: It’s always so special for us to tour and share our stories across the UK. We have an incredible amount of loyalty from our audiences, old and new - so it’s so important to keep them involved with our performances.
Saeka: Yes, of course we are very excited!

TFormidable PARTNERSHIP
his year is proving to be quite a pivotal one in the history of Leeds Heritage Theatres (Leeds Grand Theatre, City Varieties Music Hall and Hyde Park Picture House). After the appointment of Vicky Cheetham as chief this May will see Dame Dr Linda Pollard time two women have concurrently held the two most senior positions.
“I think leaders who are women and challenge the traditional pattern and broaden perceptions are really important,” says Vicky.
These were sentiments echoed by Dame Linda: “I’ve been a champion of women in business forever. I’ve chaired companies that have deliberately worked to
running a business, gender is irrelevant, providing you’re getting the results - but we must encourage more of it.”

Together, Vicky and Dame Linda will steer Leeds Heritage Theatres through a new Strategic Plan that will serve to strengthen their creative work, connect with more people, and operate sustainably, guiding them into the next stage of development.
Vicky Cheetham joined Leeds Heritage Theatres with an impressive CV, having at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Director, Arts at Southbank Centre, and She has worked across music, theatre, and creative learning, delivering ambitious artistic programmes both nationally and internationally.
“I’ve spent much of my career in London, but Leeds has always felt like in the city,” Vicky says. “My husband and

I always wanted to come back north - he’s from Scarborough - and everything aligned because this opportunity came up and professionally, it was very exciting.”
Dame Linda Pollard was born in Saltaire but has spent much of her working life in and around Leeds. As well as founding and leading several successful businesses in marketing, property and retail, more recently she has served as Chair of Leeds Teaching Hospitals, one of the UK’s largest and most complex NHS organisations. She has also previously held senior roles as Pro-Chancellor and Chair of the Governing
Deputy Chair of Yorkshire Forward.
Referring to her previous comment, Dame Linda has been a long-standing advocate for women in leadership through
UK. Her contribution has been recognised through numerous national honours, including her appointment as Dame

Although Dame Linda doesn’t take up her post until May, work has already begun involving a series of inductions as well as meeting all the staff at the three venues.
“The staff are amazing, I’ve already seen the venues and have spent a lot of time there,” Dame Linda comments. “It’s giving me some thinking time. I’m learning a lot, I’m listening a lot and hopefully, come May, I can hit the deck running.”

Vicky that really swayed her.
“Vicky was the turnkey. I saw that energy, that drive… she’s relatively new in the post, so has got a different lens and my lens is very, very different. When you go into a new company, you see it very

been quite simple - helping Leeds Heritage Theatres shift gear. “For a long period of time, the focus, quite understandably, has been about keeping the doors open and bums on seats,” she says. “There is a real need to lift our gaze; it’s about strengthening our creative voice and reconnecting more deeply with the city.
“The Strategic Plan has creativity, learning and public value at the centre of it and that has helped us to start thinking and aligning programming, partnerships and the way we work.”
Staff at Leeds Heritage Theatres have been quick to get behind the new plan and the two leading ladies are full of praise for them. “They are so passionate and so knowledgeable,” says Vicky. “They have got real intention and momentum and they’re very committed. Some of them have been here for years; they know the buildings inside out.”
Working together, they aim to drive Leeds Heritage Theatres into a new era

where continuous improvement will be key.
“You can’t stand still in any business because you’ll start sliding backwards,” states Dame Linda. “It’s not just theatre, it’s much more and that’s what quite excites me. There is so much more, and I think the timing is perfect for Vicky and me to come together because we’re both sharing that ambition.”
“The key thing for me is listening,” echoes Vicky. “That insight then sits alongside your creative ambition so you can develop and change and become more robust. I’m keen that we celebrate the heritage, but we also grapple with experimentation, ambition and other art forms.”
Having three sites presents different challenges but also different opportunities,
challenges is making sure each venue has its own identity, its own purpose and its own programme. The thing I’m vividly trying to make a case for is that the venues function as a cultural campus rather than standalone buildings, which gives us freedom to work much more boldly.
“That means multiple art forms, different experiences, different audiences… You can give people the opportunity to explore different things, and you can encourage curiosity. That’s what energises me, it always has done.”
When asked what she personally brings

“I really enjoy working with people and building teams. I’m motivated by problemsolving and am comfortable with long-term vision. And the fact I’m from Yorkshire, that also helps me a lot!”
After spending time with both ladies, you get the impression they will make a formidable partnership and Leeds Heritage Theatres will be a lot better for it.

EMBARKING
on a new era
Since taking over in 2022, the Martin family are slowly transforming Owston Hall into a luxury hotel, spa and golf destination. As work continues apace,
When the Martin family bought Owston Hall in 2022, they had a two-pronged approach. Initially, the priority was stabilisation and restoration, which meant addressing essential repairs, upgrading critical infrastructure, and ensuring the property
Now that phase is almost complete, work has begun on the second part of that plan with the ultimate aim to make Owston Hall as a premier destination estate – one that combines hospitality, heritage, landscape, and events in a cohesive and sustainable way.
To achieve this, the family have put in existing coach house building converted into luxury apartments, 23 new rooms added to the existing 32 in a new bedroom

block, the creation of two new bars, a brasserie and a formal dining room and a complete revamp of the outdoor terrace and gardens.
Further down the line, there are plans in place to create luxury holiday lets in the historic walled garden area, restore the on-site arboretum and redevelop the golf course to add a driving range and new purpose-built clubhouse.
The Martin family also own Dario’s Ristorante on the edges of the 147-acre Owston Estate and this year they will be extending the function room as well as adding nine bedrooms.
Kristy Martin has been the driving force behind the project and has been determinedly hands-on throughout.
“When you take on a property like Owston Hall, it becomes personal,” she
said. “I’ve been involved in everything from design decisions and supplier negotiations to walking the grounds and overseeing planting schemes.
“Being hands-on has allowed me to maintain consistency in vision. It also ensures that decisions are made with longterm sustainability in mind rather than short-term convenience. Restoration at this scale requires daily oversight, detailed planning, and a deep appreciation for both the commercial and heritage aspects of the estate.
“There’s something incredibly rewarding about being physically present during transformation—seeing spaces evolve and knowing you’ve played a direct role in shaping their future.”

staged carefully to allow the business to operate wherever possible. Restoration projects of this nature are never linear; once you begin peeling back layers in a historic building, additional works inevitably reveal themselves.
“The works involved structural repairs in select areas, upgrading services infrastructure, redecoration and redesign of guest bedrooms, modernisation of function suites, and landscaping improvements. We also undertook compliance updates—
standards were brought fully in line with current regulations.
“Importantly, we were conscious of preserving the hall’s historic character. Where possible, original features were restored rather than replaced. That balance between modern comfort and historical integrity has been fundamental to our approach.”
Owston Hall’s origins can be traced back to 1086 and the Norman Conquest of William the Conqueror. The estate is mentioned in the Domesday Book and has been owned by numerous landed gentries throughout its history.
much later, in the 18th century, when Mary Cooke acquired the land from the Duke of Ancaster (then 1,000 acres). Since then, the changing manor ownership and the exploration for coal for 100 years from the

In 1785, Mary Cooke was succeeded by her son Bryan Cooke and his wife Frances as lord and lady of the manor. In 1793, Bryan invited eminent landscape gardener Humphry Repton to create plans for the Owston Hall parkland. Elements of Repton’s famous Red Book designs and plantations are still

In the 1800s, the manor house underwent substantial architectural alterations, and again in the early 20th century, when the
early 1930s, the hall had been converted to a golf clubhouse, with most of the parkland turned into a golf course.
Large parts of the estate were sold off to cover death duties in 1946, and the remainder, including the hall and former parkland, were sold in 1979. Its owner kept the golf course and turned the hall into a hotel.
For Kristy and the Martin family, now

being able to enter a period of strategic growth is very exciting and is putting Owston Hall on a path to where the family would like it to be.
“It’s exciting because the foundational work is done,” she added. “We’re no longer in recovery mode; we’re in growth mode. That shift changes everything— from energy levels to investment
One part of the project, touched on earlier, is the restoration of the arboretum and the wider grounds, which will allow guests to explore that little bit further.
“The grounds at Owston Hall are
exceptional, and we believe they deserve to be curated in a way that enhances biodiversity, education, and guest experience,” explained Kristy.
“The arboretum will be developed thoughtfully over time, incorporating carefully selected species, improving pathways, and creating spaces for
strengthening the estate’s identity as more than just a hotel—it becomes a living landscape.
“This initiative also aligns with our environmental priorities. Tree planting

positively to sustainability objectives while creating an extraordinary setting for weddings and visitors.”
And let’s not forget that Owston Hall is also very much a wedding venue.
“The setting naturally lends itself to romance – historic architecture, sweeping grounds, and now an evolving arboretum that will provide even more picturesque backdrops,” said general manager Joseph Farrar. “Our offering is highly bespoke. We work closely with couples to tailor layouts, vision. Whether it’s an intimate gathering
“For couples, it’s about more than a single day—it’s about creating a setting that feels timeless and meaningful. That is what we strive to deliver.”
Given the scope and nature of the work involved, we concluded by asking Kristy if she had any favourite parts of the hall and whether she would have done anything differently.
but the grand architectural spaces – the sweeping staircases, the high-ceilinged reception rooms – are particularly special,” she said. “However, I’m equally drawn to quieter spaces within the estate grounds. Early mornings on the lawns or walking through the trees provide a sense of calm that’s rare.
“With any project of this scale, hindsight always offers lessons. Perhaps I would have anticipated the complexity of certain restoration elements and built in even more contingency time at the outset.
“That said, many of the unexpected discoveries have led to better outcomes. Working within a historic building means adapting in real time. The learning curve has been steep, but invaluable.”
All these plans sound very exciting and ambitious and will truly create a resort where guests feel they are arriving somewhere special – somewhere with depth, character, and vision. It’s
coming months and years as it slowly metamorphosises into something bigger, better and even more brilliant.
“Ultimately, we are building something enduring. Owston Hall should be stronger and culturally. We want to position Owston Hall as a destination estate recognised for excellence in hospitality, heritage preservation, and environmental stewardship,” concluded Kristy.

What 2025’s weddings really looked like - and what’s coming in 2026, according to one of the region’s busiest wedding experts.

Top 5 Wedding Trend Highlights from 2025
Champagne moments
Forget quiet toasts - 2025 was all about the spectacle. Champagne towers made a glamorous comeback, and the champagne spray became the shot of the season.

Modern twists on tradition
mismatched bridal parties to four-legged ring bearers, tradition took a back seat to creativity. “We’ve seen some incredible personal touches this year,” says Katie. “It’s all about joy, humour and celebrating love in every form.”
One-tier wonders Cakes went minimalist but meaningful.
“One-tier cakes had a huge moment in 2025,” Katie notes. “Couples are favouring a single, beautifully decorated cake with show-stopping design and tables or cheese towers. It’s about quality over quantity.”
Winter sparkle
Christmas and New Year weddings surged in popularity this year.
“There’s something magical about the Peak District in winter,” Katie says. “Venues like The Maynard and The Peacock at Rowsley look incredible with candlelight, twinkling lights and festive menus. Guests are relaxed, everyone’s in celebratory mode - it’s one of my favourite times of year.”

Looking ahead to 2026
So what’s next? According to Katie, 2026 will see even more creativity and colour.
“We’re expecting to see bold and a continued focus on food and experience. Couples want to wow their guests, but they also want their day to feel effortless and fun.”
The growing appetite for personalised, intimate celebrations will continue, especially in venues with strong character and great food.
“Every couple is different,” Katie adds. “Our job is to make sure their venue feels like an extension of them celebration or a laid-back weekend gathering with family and friends.”
Engagement season begins

“It’s such an exciting time,” Katie says. “The festive season has a natural sense of magic and togetherness - the perfect moment for a proposal. By January, we’ll start seeing newly engaged couples touring venues and planning their big day for 2026 and beyond.”
For those newly engaged, Katie’s advice is simple: “Visit venues early, take your time, and choose somewhere that feels like you. The best weddings aren’t about trends - they’re about personality, people and joy.”

Reaching for the STARS
We speak to Michelin star chef, Adam Degg, of FIFTY TWO at Rudding Park Hotel.
The Michelin Guide’s announcements for 2026 looked favourably on Yorkshire restaurants and hotels, not least FIFTY TWO at star.
Inspectors loved the open kitchen and theatrical aspect, saying: “All the semicommunal tables face the chefs as they craft their creative surprise tasting menu, which is informed by their homegrown produce (from the 52 raised beds) and the preserved ingredients that line the shelves.”
They also praised the playful ‘Dessert Island Discs’, which allows guests to choose a track to play while the puddings are served.
This award is particularly pleasing for head chef Adam Degg, who joined Rudding Park in 2022 after previously cutting his
restaurants, including Wild Honey and Chiltern Firehouse. He also worked at the Hand and Flowers and was part of the team who received The Coach’s Michelin star in Marlow.
Adam developed the concept for FIFTY TWO, which is inspired by the number of raised beds in Rudding Park’s Kitchen Garden. It takes its cue from ‘mother nature’ with dishes created using the highest quality ingredients cultivated in the kitchen garden or selected from trusted local producers and purveyors.
“Quality begins at the source,” Adam explains. “We hand-select ingredients daily, ensuring each dish is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, balance, and seasonality,
We also preserve ingredients so we still have lots of availability in winter.”
kitchen by chance when, aged 16, he missed the train home from the football. He was near an Italian restaurant owned by his friend’s parents where they allowed him to wash the dishes until they could give him a lift home. From then on, the buzz of the kitchen called.

When asked what he enjoys most about being a chef, Adam said: “The unsociable hours! No seriously, the whole concept behind FIFTY TWO is to inject fun into
hidden away, our team are all front of house – it’s a key part of the guest experience, so we get to have fun too.”
Adam’s signature dish is a brown butter tart, which the AA named ‘AA Dish of the Month’ in November 2025, as well the bread, which is made with fermented potatoes from the garden. The team only start baking it once guests arrive so once

everyone is seated it’s served fresh out the oven with cultured butter that is churned daily, seasoned with nasturtium salt, a
goddess dressing from all of the herbs from the garden.
Asked if he had any advice for other chefs, Adam added: “Eat lots, read books and follow chefs on Instagram!
