The Corn ExchangeDONCASTER

A hub for events and culture in the city centre.

In the heart of Doncaster, the Doncaster Corn Exchange is a striking Victorian landmark reimagined for today. As a retail and events destination, it blends historic charm with a modern, creative energy. Independent traders, pop-up markets, live music, art showcases and community events all share the same space, creating an atmosphere that feels timeless yet refreshingly current.

More than just an events space, the Corn Exchange is a multi-functional venue available for public, semi-private, or private hire. From exhibitions and markets to live music, corporate launches, workshops, community events, and wedding receptions, it can be adapted to suit almost any occasion.

At the end of 2025, Sam Scherdel made a triumphant return to Doncaster, taking to the Corn Exchange stage with his band, alongside JM Promotions for an unforgettable historic space into a buzzing live music venue. Perfectly showcasing just how versatile and exciting the Corn Exchange can be.

A busy 2026 programme is set to bring even more energy to the Corn Exchange. Artisan markets, sporting showcases, tribute nights and family activities highlight the creativity and diversity of Doncaster, while a renewed focus on live entertainment is transforming the venue

with atmosphere and nostalgia.

Kicking off the Corn Exchange’s 2026 tribute night series, 25 April brings an Elvis Tribute Night with Mark Summers, capturing the charisma and classic sound of The King.

On 16 May, a Brit Pop Tribute Night revisits 90s anthems, followed by Clubland Anthems on 24 May for a high energy daytime Bank Holiday party. Then, on 6 June, an 80s/90s Night delivers a mix of nostalgic hits, plus more shows throughout the year.

Indoor markets and fairs continue to play a vital role, with events such as the antique fair hosted by Corn Exchange business JBF Antiques, including the upcoming event on 12 April, alongside artisan markets curated by organisers like The Artisan Street Fayre.

Community-led events continue at the venue. On 19 April, Doncaster Voices will return again with another music workshop and live performance, all enhanced by the venue’s unique atmosphere. Wilby Carr Community Boxing Club will also return to host their third amateur boxing night on 15 May, offering another nod to the building’s heritage.

Is The Constant Wife the breath of fresh air we all need? By Carl Woodward.

Kara Tointon sweeps into the room with the same bright energy the public know so well, and when I ask her how 2025 has treated her so far, she gives a wry smile.

“Well, it’s been a year of two halves, but not necessarily cut down the middle,” she laughs. “I think for a lot of people it’s been a funny old year. Strange. That’s why The Constant Wife feels like such a breath of fresh air. It’s so funny, and I think it’s going to be real light relief for people watching it and for those of us doing it. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Despite decades in the business, Tointon insists her route into acting was almost accidental. Tointon from Basildon in Essex explains: “My parents were fantastic. Because of my dyslexia, I struggled at school, so Mum and Dad wanted me to

7, Kara started to go to speech and drama and entered local music festivals doing poetry recitals. “I loved it. It was totally accidental, but that’s where it all began.

Now, though, she’s taking on Constance, the razor-sharp heroine of Somerset Maugham’s 100-year-old play, and she doesn’t hold back on her excitement.

“Constance is the best role I’ve ever been given,” she says simply. “Laura Wade’s adaptation is something special. You read it, and the words just spring off the page.”

What surprised her most in rehearsals? “For a 100-year-old play, it is very funny. It feels current. Honestly, it could have been written in 2026, right now.”

powerhouse. She knows what she’s doing, of course, but all her underlying brilliance suddenly rises to the surface. She becomes the engine of every scene. That’s a lot of fun.”

Recently, the 42-year-old revealed she had undergone a double mastectomy after

risk of breast and ovarian cancer. “I’m not naturally someone who talks about things like this,” she admits. “But during it all,

coffee or getting on the tube and saying, ‘I’ve just had a double mastectomy!’ I couldn’t help it.”

What, I ask, surprised her most was how much hearing other people’s stories helped. There’s a tilt of the head. “When I was going through it, listening to others’ experiences comforted me in a way I can’t explain. You suddenly don’t feel alone. We’re so lucky now to understand more about our own genetics and health. If sharing my story helps even one other person feel more at ease, that means everything.”

Tointon is now an ambassador for the gynaecological cancer charity the Eve

Touring, of course, brings chaos, new cities, new audiences and a different energy every night. “What a great way to start the year,” she beams. “I’m just so excited to take this show on the road.”

Producer David Pugh has made headlines keeping tickets at affordable prices, some behind.

sometimes it’s like booking an all-inclusive holiday. David keeps prices reasonable so everyone can come. Live theatre is magical. Everyone deserves to experience it.”

Period pieces have become a Tointon speciality, from Pygmalion to Gaslight.

“There’s nothing better than transporting yourself to another time,” she says. “In theatre you really get to dig into the period. It’s incredible. I love it.”

She says that The Constant Wife is moving and funny all at once: “You leave thinking about what you would do

Constance is so witty and brilliant. I wish I were as sharp as her.”

One particularly unusual stop on the tour is Cunard’s Queen Mary II. “I’m so excited,” she grins. “It’s a great way of reaching audiences who might never catch the show on tour. I’ve heard of so many people seeing brilliant theatre on cruises. It’s a great idea for us, too.”

Finally, I ask what the title of her autobiography would be. “Oopsie daisy,” she smiles.

month, World of Superheroes specialises in the trade of comic books – as well as other memorabilia – and is now, by volume, Europe’s biggest buyer and seller of vintage comics.

At present, the warehouse on Holbrook Industrial Estate is home around 300,000 different comic books. These range from classic varieties to modern interpretations and cover mainly American (DC and Marvel) comics as well as everything in between.

Owner Steve Eyre has been a lifelong collector of comic books but decided to turn his hobby into a business in 2020.

Steve has been buying up collections and then selling them on either as oneoff pieces or in bundles via World of Superheroes’ online shop or through their dedicated eBay site.

To keep your comic books in pristine condition, World of Superheroes now stock their own branded bags, boards and holders.

Alongside the comic books, original artwork has grown massively in popularity (and price) and includes everything from storyboards to posters. Steve has just taken

receipt of some Judge Dredd artwork by Pete Smith, which is unusual in that it is a complete story – usually these pieces only appear as individual pages.

Steve also has some original paintings by storyboard artist Robert Bailey, who previously worked with George Lucas of Star Wars fame, as well as work by John Higgins and signed pieces from Stan Lee, Siegel and Shuster and Bob Kane.

Since opening its doors in March 2025, city’s premier destination for a night out of non-stop laughter. The venue has welcomed huge crowds every weekend, cementing its reputation as a must-visit night out in Yorkshire.

The venue’s recent birthday celebrations pulled out all the stops with internationally renowned comedians, including Russell

And there’s so much more to come this Spring, with stand up shows every weekend, featuring the likes of Matt Brown, Allyson June Smith and Scot Capuro. Plus, star of BBC’s Upstart Crow, Rob Rouse, podcast cult hero Jamie Hutchinson, Glasgow’s Suzie McCabe and the cabaret extravaganza, The Cheryl and Kitty Show will all take to the stage throughout April.

Alongside the stellar line-up, the venue has also launched a brand-new food and drink menu, adding even more to the Glee experience. Guests can enjoy a revamped selection of bar classics, cocktail pitchers, beer buckets and a carefully curated wine list.

The Glee founder Mark Tughan said:

Leeds. The city has embraced us with open arms and the atmosphere on our sell-out weekends has been absolutely electric. We are so proud of what we’ve built in Leeds, and we can’t wait to raise a glass, and a giggle, to many more years of laughter.”

Sun’s out, LEEDS IS OUT

amazing what a change in the weather can do to the atmosphere

The briefest appearance of sunshine at the end of last month was all the excuse Leeds needed to dust off its outdoor tables, and I wasted absolutely no time in grabbing one! Two days of blue skies and suddenly it was full on alfresco mode, which for me included a BBQ at The Faversham where I worked my way through the new menu picks - and oh my day’s guests are in for a real treat! A cheeky glass (or two) at Cheesy Living and I even managed an outdoor dip at David Lloyd. There’s something about that

around the city.

suddenly the city feels awake. If this was waiting for more.

It hasn’t all been patios and pools dominating my time though, one of the more surreal, and genuinely brilliant, experiences I got to enjoy recently was a ‘Dinner on the Stage’ event at First Direct Bank Arena. Sitting where the performers usually look out to a sea of thousands, we were treated to an evening of delicious food and entertainment and got to hear some exclusive news for some big plans in the works there - so watch this space.

afterparty. Other winners included Empire Café, which was crowned best restaurant, and its sister venue, The Highland Laddie, which was named best pub. Our friends over at Green Room also won best bar for the third-year running.

I also got a bit of culture in the mix with a trip to The Grand Theatre for the Tina Turner musical which was incredible and songs she gave us. It was a powerful performance featuring all the high and lows of Tina’s life, a must-see. The Grand has a packed programme ahead too, with Legally Blonde bringing high-energy fun and Shrek offering something for families.

Back to food (because what else?) and Leeds is about to get even spicier. Madre is set to make its debut in April, bringing a fresh taste of Mexico to the city. Following the success of its lively tequila bar sibling, Salon Madre, this new opening promises more of a day-to-night experience perfect

dinners. I cannot wait to try it.

And if further proof were needed that Leeds is having a real foodie moment, new research has just named the city the secondbest destination for food lovers in the UK. If you ask me, it’s a title that it fully deserves.

Elsewhere, The Glee Club marked its cementing itself as a brilliant addition to the city’s entertainment scene. In just a year, it’s brought in world-class acts, built a loyal following, and consistently soldout shows. There’s a banging programme of entertainment, comedy and drag shows coming up this Spring so if you fancy a good laugh then grab your tickets before they’re gone!

What should I EXPECT?

Total Hip Replacement – preparing for surgery, recovery and returning to exercise by Colin Holton – Young Adult Hip Orthopaedic

For many patients, a total hip replacement represents a new start—freedom from pain and a return to movement. But alongside this outcome I have tried to address the common practical questions that patients ask me in clinic: How long will recovery take? When can I exercise properly again? And how long will the new hip last?

Here is my experience and the evidence:

What to Expect After Surgery

Recovery follows a steady, predictable path – I often say that it is like the tortoise and the hare fable that slow and steady allows the quickest recovery.

Often on the day of surgery or the following day you will be up and walking. Most leave hospital within 1-2 days.

independence. You will use crutches, fully weight-bearing as pain allows.

By six weeks, mobility improves

using your crutches. Many return to driving before or around 6 weeks. Most people who are desk-based are back at work at this time. Physiotherapy continues to focus on rebuilding strength and balance.

At three months, most patients experience a major shift: walking feels

Returning to Exercise: What’s Realistic?

The evidence and my personal experience highlights that most patients return to sport or physical activity within 4–6 months, with continued progressive improvement over the

• Low-impact cardio such as cycling, swimming, and cross-training

increasing intensity

In fact, studies show that around 76 per cent of patients have returned to sport by 4–6 months, rising to over 90 per cent by one year.

When it comes to higher-intensity training, the picture is more nuanced:

• My patients are usually return to demanding gym workouts within this 3–6 month window

• Most patients return to high-intensity sport overall, but with I do caution returning to regular high impact activity

Light jogging sits in a grey area. My current advice is:

• Look at starting this activity around the six-month post-surgery.

• If you were an experienced runner prior to surgery then please consider reducing your expectation to being happy at returning to running at lower level of occasional 5K run at a slow pace.

In contrast, I have found patients have controlled high-intensity gym work as the

How Long Does a Hip Replacement Last?

Our National Joint Registry, which records all total hip replacement surgery performed in the UK to monitor their outcome provides evidence highlighting 92 per cent of hip replacements last 30 years or more.

In practical terms:

• Over 90 per cent of total hip placements are lasting 20–30+ years

• Older patients often never need another surgery

• Younger patients may eventually require revision – but much later than before

Preparing for Surgery: What You Can Do Now

Preparation has a real impact on recovery.

weeks following surgery

• Optimise your health (stop smoking, manage weight, stay active)

We know that patients who go into surgery stronger have a faster recovery.

The Bigger Picture

A total hip replacement is not an instant

procedures in modern medicine.

By three to six months, most patients are not just recovering – they are rebuilding strength, returning to the gym, and reclaiming an active lifestyle. High-impact activities like running may require caution, but for the vast majority, a strong, painfree, and highly active future is well within reach. Alongside this good functional outcome, we know that current modern implants are lasting for decades.

An Italian twist on a CLASSIC ROAST

Ross Heppenstall wishes every day was like Sunday after this recent visit to Flying Pizza by San Carlo.

lying Pizza by San Carlo, the beloved Leeds institution, reopened its doors in May 2024 following a stunning £2million refurbishment.

Nearly two years on and what an amazing revamp it has proven to be, blending its rich local heritage with modern sophistication, ensuring it has remained a cherished destination for both locals and

The legendary Italian restaurant in Roundhay is always busy, such is the demand to dine here. But my friend and I

It was a wise decision and the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon in early Spring in this well-heeled part of Leeds.

it was not quite packed like a Friday or Saturday night when you are lucky to get a table.

After taking our seats, we order a couple of pints of Peroni as we pore over the menu.

There is, of course, a huge choice of dishes on the main menu, ranging from pizza, pasta, numerous specials and many meticulously crafted dishes that remain true to the restaurant’s Italian roots. But the Sunday Lunch menu is particularly enticing and extremely good value.

There is a succulent half Roast Chicken (£18.95), Roast Rib of Beef (£21.95), Roast Rump of Lamb (£20.95) and, if you are

All dishes come with amazing roast vegetables, Yorkshire Pudding and gravy, all cooked to perfection of course.

I went for the Roast Rib of Beef and was left feeling especially smug with myself when it arrived. The portion sizes are very generous, with several thick slices of beautiful beef which I was more than happy to smother in gravy before devouring.

My friend opted for the Roast Chicken and remarked how delicious it tasted.

Both dishes were immaculately presented and the price of Sunday Lunch, in such a

prestigious establishment, could certainly not be described as expensive. Quite the opposite in fact.

The Flying Pizza has, famously, been a

The Flying Pizza can now accommodate up to 130 guests and tables are at a premium, but there is a nice, relaxed vibe to the Sunday lunchtime experience.

When you arrive, you just know you are entering somewhere special. Guests the luxurious villas of Lake Como, with

premises to highlight the restaurant’s Italian roots.

long-standing tradition, adding a touch of the sea to the landlocked location.

Every staff member is warm, welcoming and utterly charming.

While the restaurant is owned by the hugely successful San Carlo group, its identity as the Flying Pizza remains very much intact.

That is clear by all the signage and menu bearing the restaurant’s famous name.

A quick glance around the Flying Pizza – and the lavish cars parked outside –suggests that the majority of their clientele have plenty of cash to splash.

But their prices are in no way

- and more and more plates of roast beef, chicken and lamb, accompanied with roast

potatoes and Yorkshire pudding, are served, it says much for the allure of their Sunday Lunch menu.

After devouring our main courses, we order another beer and then scour the vast desserts menu.

I love cheesecake, so ordered the classic baked vanilla cheesecake (£8.50) while my friend ordered the Coppa di Fragole, a

It goes down well with the families, couples and groups of friends who are here to enjoy their Sunday Lunch in style.

Fifty-two years since it was founded and it is safe to say that the Flying Pizza remains iconic. And how we should all raise a glass to that.

Springing the CHANGES

Uyare has new cocktails and new menus - and city views that are the envy of Leeds, writes Richard Abbey.

And then there’s the rooftop terrace, which offers some of the most stunning views in the city and opens Thursday to Sunday. It offers the perfect pre-dinner cocktail spot as well as a standalone bar

experience with tables available to book exclusively for drinks.

The new season has seen the launch of a new cocktail and bar food menu to complement the existing restaurant menu. Think snacks and small plates and signature cocktail creations designed to take guests on a journey through the region.

Founder Siby Jose said:“Uyare is all about energy, and that’s exactly what we’re bringing to our rooftop bar this spring and summer.

We started with drinks – a Virtuous Session IPA (£6.75 pint) and a Nirvana Bavarian Helles lager (£3.95) for my companion – before discussing the menu with our hostess, Zaina.

The menu is divided into starters (signature bites) as well as well as mains and meat dishes as well as sides, rice and breads. Each dish had its own little story which added to the authenticity.

The Pal Konju translated to four plump king prawns marinated in chilli and garlic, which had been grilled then simmered in a tangy blend of tamarind, lemon, coconut and bell pepper. This dish was inspired by the coastal kitchens of Mararikulam and another winner.

Our culinary journey into ‘Kerala’s ocean soul’ continued with our main courses; the grilled stuffed seabass (£24) was meaty with crisp skin and topped with chemmeen peera – spiced shrimp tossed with coconut

We also enjoyed what is described as ‘Grandmother’s secret chicken curry’Pedappan Kozhi (£21) is a slow-cooked rustic dish made from a treasured family recipe passed through generations and was

Making a huge DIFFERENCE

Yorkshire Children’s Charity have a mission to make things better for young people. Their latest project, at Hilltop School in Rotherham, has been their biggest to date.

It featured in a BBC documentary called ‘SEND Help’ in 2023.

“As a mum, I cannot imagine leaving my child in conditions whereby I knew they were going to come home at the end of the day worse off for being there. And that was no slant against any of the staff, but it was incredibly sad.”

As part of the charity’s Great Yorkshire

Build initiative, Hilltop became a top priority. Despite typically doing projects for around £1million, they quickly realised that this wouldn’t be enough.

“I walked the contractors around that school and there wasn’t a single person who came out and wasn’t holding back the tears,” commented Charlotte. “We all sat down and said, look we can go in and spend £1million but in our heart of hearts, are we going to be comfortable with that? So we all collectively said, no we can’t, let’s go away and try and do better.”

“Working with Nexus, I can’t tell you how positive it’s been,” added Charlotte. “As an academy trust they are so committed, they have been so grateful for this opportunity and perhaps understood that this was their only chance to sort this school out.”

Henry Boot Construction led on the project and delivered all main contractor duties free of charge while its supply chain provided time, labour and materials all at discounted rates – saving over £650,000.

fantastic milestone for everyone involved,” said Ian Gresser, head of pre-construction at Henry Boot Construction. “We’re incredibly proud. Social value is about legacy, and here that means giving children the environment they deserve. The

collaboration, skill and generosity of our team and supply chain partners has been outstanding – helping us create spaces that will genuinely make a difference.”

Warren Carratt, chief executive of Nexus Multi Academy Trust, Charlotte echoed these sentiments and also thanked Triton, B&K and GMI Construction as well as Cartwright Pickard, Richard Boothroyd & Associates and Pierre

Angulaire, who all contributed – and are still contributing – to the project.

“What they’ve done at Hilltop is they have changed the lives of not only the children there now but generations to come,” she added. “The children, families and teachers at Hilltop deserve so much more than what they had.”

Such is YCC’s relationship with the commercial property sector that they host

a special awards event every year, which is attended by 1,000 people and takes place in May at Rudding Park, Harrogate.

“If I stood up [at the awards] and said ‘will you guys give me £2.2million?’ there’s not a cat in hell’s chance I’d ever get it,” laughed Charlotte. “But if you ask them for their time, resources and supply chains, they can and go above and beyond to make sure it happens.”

After starting her career in the corporate world, Charlotte worked for a national children’s charity before setting up Yorkshire Children’s Charity from her kitchen table with £7,000 four years ago. In that time it has helped 60,000 children and raised just over £8million.

“I set it up because I believe there was

a better way for us to get help and support to children in Yorkshire,” she explained.

all it’s enormous, but also we have extreme pockets of wealth and extreme pockets of deprivation. It felt to me that is was almost a postcode lottery deciding which kids got what. I wanted to create a charity whereby regardless of where you live in the region, you can access a level of help and support.”

There are 12 people who work at YCC and Charlotte is keen to stress that it is very much a collaborative effort.

“I never, ever see it as my charity, I simply did the paperwork to set it up,” she explained. “Setting up YCC is the hardest thing I’ve ever done by my god, it’s an incredible privilege. This is something I

want everyone to have a sense of ownership over.”

Running the charity is very much one of contrasts; Charlotte sees the absolute best in people but also the hardest sides of life, citing that one in three children in Yorkshire live in poverty. But this provides constant perspective.

“I constantly put myself in the shoes of parents and make 99 per cent of the decisions as a mum and one per cent as a chief exec,” Charlotte said. “We’re a classic start-up. We say yes to everything and then worry about how we’re going to deliver it afterwards. If we can’t be ambitious, don’t take risks and be courageous for kids are so dependent on us, it’s a poor show. That’s my view.

Huge thank-yous

“We’re here to advocate and speak on behalf of thousands of children across the region who can’t speak up for themselves.”

YCC fundraises through trusts and foundations and also through events, the largest of which is a gala dinner at Grantley Hall called ‘A Night Under the Stars’, which this year raised £1.2million. But one area that Charlotte would like to see the charity improve in is through regular monthly donations, which would allow them to plan their work further in advance. As well as the project at Hilltop School YCC are also working on schemes in York and Skipton and are constantly looking at where their help and expertise can be best used.

“Walking into Hilltop School and seeing what Henry Boot had done is a moment I’ll

the reason we get up and do what we do every day. To see the difference that a group of good people coming together can make, not just for the children now but for future generations.”
