Welcome to CityMag... SEPTEMBER’S that time of year when Sheffield gets much more of a buzz about it. Yes, it’s that time of year we see a huge influx of students, new and old. If you fall into the former category, welcome to our fair city and we hope you enjoy your next three or so years with us. There’s every chance you’ll be here longer than that – Sheffield has one of the highest retention rates for graduates – and why wouldn’t you want to be? To help you get to know your new city that bit better, we’ve put together a mini-guide of the places and things that should be on your to-do list. It’s a mere drop in the ocean really – there’s a huge amount too see and do in the city – but it should help to get you started. If that’s not enough, you’ll find us at the University of Sheffield’s Fresher’s Fair on 28 September where you’ll be able to find out mcuh more about CityMag and our sister website, Vibe Sheffield. See you there.

BOOM, Sheffield’s back! We do love you fresher’s – and those students returning too – and no matter how you look at it, Sheffield is certainly student-focussed and we salute you. Congratulations for having rather fine taste and choosing our fair city. To mark the occasion of your arrival, we have dedicated this issue to being a guide about Sheffield and all the gems that lay within. Believe us, there are plenty. You’ll find everything from where to eat and drink to where to shop and visit, plus we visit the Moor Market to see how far £20 really goes. Could it feed you for a week? We sent Rachel Martin to find out. Elsewhere we get the inside track from Russell’s Bike Shed on how to cope with Sheffield’s hills – it can be rude awakening if you’re unprepared – and go against the grain with some top advice from Brag Vintage. Yes, double denim is acceptable and can look great too. Melanie Jackson Publishing Manager

EVENT…

FESTIVAL OF THE MIND

ON SCREEN…

15-25 September The University of Sheffield, Addison Building www.festivalof themind.group. shef.ac.uk

23 September Adapted from a novel by M.R. Carey, this sci-fi thriller sees a scientist and a teacher living in a dystopian future embark on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie – the girl with all the gifts. It stars Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close and Paddy Considine.

THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS 15 September

Joanne Greenbaum, Fat Yellow, 2004. © ARS, NY and DACS, London

Festival of the Mind sees university academics and professionals from Sheffield’s cultural, creative and digital industries working together to bring research to life in exciting, entertaining and innovative ways. It is a collaboration between the university and the city of Sheffield which strengthens ties and creates a new understanding between the leading research-intensive institution and community that supports it. The programme has something for all ages, and is designed to showcase cutting-edge new thinking and offering a rare chance to explore some of the university’s older treasures and curiosities. The centrepiece of the festival is the glittering Spiegeltent in Barker’s Pool.

THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS

For one night only, theatres up and down the country will be showing Ron Howard’s compilation of found footage featuring music, interviews and stories of The Beatles’ 250 concerts from 1963 to 1966. It’s a rare glimpse into the crazy world of Beatlemania at its peak.

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN 23 September The original was great enough in its own right so how this new version will hold up is anyone’s guess. The premise is the same – seven outlaws come to the aid of a village being savaged by a twisted industrialist – with an equally stellar cast. Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio all appear. Let’s hope they haven’t messed with the theme tune too much.

EXHIBITION… GOING PUBLIC – THE NAPOLEONE COLLECTION Until 15 October Graves Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk

#SHOUTABOUTSHEFFIELD Visit www.vibesheffield.com

With her first acquisition in the mid-1990s, Valeria Napoleone established a collection with a singular purpose; to champion the work of women artists and redress the gender imbalance she saw within the art world. Spanning painting and sculpture to photography and installation, Napoloene’s remarkable collection has gone on to represent some of most pioneering female artists of the past 20 years.

THERE’S lots of interesting facts about Sheffield. Ones that you could happily reel off to impress someone visiting the city for the first time. For starters it has a population of roughly just over half a million and covers an area of approximately 3,700 square miles. It was granted city status in 1893 and its economy is worth in excess of £7billion a year. If numbers aren’t really your thing you could talk about the fact that it is built on seven hills – the same as Rome and Istanbul. It has five rivers – the Don, Sheaf, Rivelin, Loxley and Porter – two million trees, 170 woodlands, 78 public parks and ten public gardens. In fact, 61 per cent of the city is designated greenspace, and that’s not including the Peak District National Park, which is right on the doorstep. Sheffield is perhaps best known for its industry, particularly the production of steel, hence the nickname ‘Steel City’. Although it gained worldwide recognition for its steel industry in the 19th century, Sheffield was already noted for its production of knives in the 14th century and by 1600 had become the main centre of cutlery production in England. Such was the importance of its steel production it became an important centre for weapons and munitions production during World War Two and was targeted by Hitler’s Luftwaffe. During the ‘Sheffield Blitz’, which took place between 12-15 December 1940, 660 people were killed as a result of the German bombing raids. From a cultural point of view, you can’t talk about Sheffield without mentioning its long musical heritage; the amount of quality acts to emerge from the city includes the likes of Joe Cocker, the Human League, ABC, Pulp and the Arctic Monkeys. Live music takes a leading role and there are venues to cater for all tastes, from the Leadmill and Plug to the O2 Academy and Sheffield Arena.

We love it. And want you to love it too. Here we look at the areas you should be visiting and the pick of the places worth seeking out.

SEPTEMBER 2016 / ISSUE 33

11

There are also a wealth of theatres, museums and attractions. The Sheffield Theatre group is considered one of the finest in the country and then you’ve got the likes of Weston Park Museum, Kelham Island, Millennium Galleries and Graves Gallery to add to the cultural equation. Sheffield also has a strong sporting background and is blessed with some top facilities including Ponds Forge, iceSheffield and the English Institute of Sport. The latter has recently been credited with having made a huge contribution to Team GB’s recent success at the Rio Olympic Games with the likes of Jessica Ennis-Hill and Nicola Adams training there. Football is in all Sheffielders’ blood, be it red or blue. But take away the trials and tribulations of both Wednesday and United and you’ll find that the world’s first official football club, Sheffield FC, was formed here way back in 1857. If football is not your thing there’s rugby league (Eagles), rugby union (Tigers), ice hockey (Steelers), basketball (Sharks) and speedway (Tigers). Sheffield is also synonymous with snooker, particularly the World Championship which is held at The Crucible Theatre every April. And that’s only part of it. It may seem that the whole of the city centre is one big refurbishment and in reality, that’s not too far from the truth. Be it apartments, offices or new retail spaces,

there’s something going on around every corner. Work is finally starting on the new city centre retail scheme, the first part of which is expected to be completed by 2019. The Moor is also undergoing something of a transformation, largely thanks to The Light development which will house shops, restaurants and a cinema. After losing ground to the likes of Leeds and Nottingham, the nightlife in the city is on the up once more. Venues like the O2 Academy and Soyo, as well as old favourites like the Leadmill, Plug, Forum and The Harley, are attracting more and more people to the city, particularly students, who often don’t want to leave. Sheffield has two world class institutions – the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University – which are home to roughly 60,000 students, many of which choose to stay in the city after completing their studies. In fact, Sheffield has one of the highest retention rates in the country. So what it is that keeps people here? If you take away the greenness, the industrial heritage, the music, sport and culture, what you’re left with is a friendly, defiantly independent, strongwilled, honest and straight talking city. Is there any wonder it’s often nicknamed ‘England’s biggest village’? Just look at the facts.

CITY CENTRE

KEEP UP TO DATE WITH EVERYTHING THAT’S GOING ON IN SHEFFIELD AT SHEFFIELDVIBE.COM

THE MOOR MARKET Described by the Independent newspaper as the ‘Borough Market of the north’ and a haven for food lovers. With more than 90 independent businesses the Moor Market provides a wealth of opportunity for a spot of retail therapy or picking up home essentials. Our favourites include Cod & Cockle, Beer Central, S and J Foods to name a few. Waterall’s pork pies are legendary too.

STEAM YARD Since occupying the former home of Jack’s Records, this courtyard coffee house has quickly become something of a Sheffield favourite. Their coffee is second to none and best served with a doughnut, macaroon or toastie. Or all of the above. When the sun shines the courtyard is one of the best spots in town.

THE FORUM It’s been the hangout for cool kids for decades now but shows no sign of losing its touch. You’ll find everything from barber shops to tattoo parlours and vintage clothes to the latest Doc Martens. When you’re dead on your feet, the café-bar is a more than adequate place to rest up but the fun really begins after dark.

COW It may be part of a chain (in the loosest terms) but there’s nothing run of the mill about this huge vintage emporium. You’ll find everything from jeans to jackets and shoes to sportswear.

COLLARD MANSON This super-stylish independent boutique has some of the quirkiest jewellery around – from the likes of Vivienne Westwood as well as their own creations – alongside shoes, bags and clothes for men and women.

THE GREAT GATSBY With such a great location, it was only a matter of time before someone made this corner of Division Street a success – the Gatsby team have done it in spades. Coupled with their Shy Boy Cantina, where you’ll find some of the tastiest tacos in the city, it should be firmly on your list of go-to places, whether for a drink, some food or just to hang out.

SAVILLS Renowned for their classic cuts, not just in Sheffield but further afield. Savills is a one stop man shop which provides a high quality traditional barbering and wet shave service, alongside men’s traditional accessories and an apothecary of grooming aids, handpicked for their results and unique appeal. Cuts start from £20. Students save ten per cent Mondays to Wednesdays on production of a valid NUS card.

MILLENNIUM GALLERIES This city centre gallery and exhibition space has been a worthy addition to the cultural quarter, hosting both local and national exhibitions. At present you can see the Made in Sheffield exhibit, a dazzling celebration of the internationally-renowned making and manufacture that takes place in our 21st century city. The shop is pretty good too, where you can pick up lots of Sheffieldrelated products and artwork by local designers, including our cover star, James Green.

ECCLESALL ROAD STARMOREBOSS Sharrowvale Road is blessed with many fine, independent food and drink providers but Starmoreboss really stands out from the crowd. The boutique and bespoke off-license specialises in quality wine, craft beer and intriguing spirits. If you’re after something a little different, this is the place to go. Also, don’t miss their tasting nights at Portland House.

HARRISON An Ecclesall Road without Harrison just wouldn’t be the same. The menswear emporium stock only the highest quality brands with proven staying power – think Paul Smith, Barbour, Hugo Boss and more.

THE BOTANICAL GARDENS

ASHOKA If there ever was a go-to restaurant for a curry, this would be it. Since it’s refurb early last year, which has that cool contemporary meets classic kind of vibe, it’s really taken things up a notch. The menu is simple, the service fantastic and the pick of the bunch? The Taxi Driver curry.

THE SHEFFIELD SHOP

For such a bustling area of the city, it’s amazing how quiet the Botanical Gardens can be. A restoration project in 2005 saw the amazing pavilions restored; they, along with the bear pit, are a major attraction.

DI S O CAT APP PR UR ER O ERE ED INT BO ST FO M OK AU R EN T RA , EX T. O NT CL LA AVO AL US RGE ID SO IVE G AV HIR ROU AI E PS LA OF BL E

Another mainstay on Ecclesall Road, you can pretty much guess what the Sheffield Shop sells; everything from cutlery to silverware, pocket knives to photo frames as well as a host of city souvenirs. If it’s made in Sheffield, you’ll be hard pushed not to find it here.

A few years later the shop moved on to the high street, everything was going well until the town was hit by a flood in 2000 and the shop was ruined. Proove was started by Deepak and Rob; two guys who really love pizza and wanted to bring authentic, Neapolitan wood-fired pizza to the lovely people of Sheffield. Their belief is that great pizza should not be expensive, and always with simple, quality, fresh ingredients. No gimmicks.

which sells in other Italian restaurants in Sheffield for £50! It’s your for only £25 at Proove… Or I’m feeling ‘thrifty’?

Our values of service, quality, teamwork, community and exceed expectations run throughout everything we do. Our mission is to ensure the customer experience exceeds their expectations.

What’s the favourite dish on the menu currently?

For a true Neapolitan experience, it has to be the Margherita. No frills, just amazing San Marzano tomatoes, creamy fior di latte mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, Parmigiano Reggiano and fresh basil... (don’t forget the garlic oil to dip those delicious crusts into).

BROOMHILL RECORD COLLECTOR There’s not really much more you can say about the Record Collector apart from the fact it’s the largest independent record shop in Sheffield specialising in new and second hand CDs and vinyl. If you’re serious about music, you need to pay it a visit.

THE YORK True North Brew Co breathed new life into this former chain Irish bar making it popular not just with the student crowds but pretty much everyone. The food is top notch and there are plenty of ales, spirits and cocktails to choose from. What more do you need?

THYME CAFE If comfort food is your thing, this is the place to go. Set up 13 years ago by Adrian Cooling and Richard & Victoria Smith you’ll find everything from pies to burgers and bangers to bouillabaisse.

WE ARE ROCO The pedants amongst you will tell us that this is more Broomhall than Broomhill but it would have been an injustice not to give We Are Roco a mention. The social enterprise is café, bar, shops and gallery rolled into one. The roof terrace is not to be missed.

ABBEYDALE/LONDON ROAD FORGE BAKEHOUSE Providing the good folk of Sheffield and beyond with fresh bread and pastries since November 2012. Breakfasts are legendary and their lunches and sandwiches aren’t too bad either. Don’t make my mistake and double up for breakfast – you really don’t need to. Granola AND baked eggs filled me up for the rest of the day. And the one after.

PICTURE HOUSE SOCIAL A triumph since it opened, PHS is an independent venue with music, cocktails, craft beer, Italian inspired street food, games room and terrace. Oh, and live music when the mood suits.

BRAGAZZI’S There’s nothing complicated about Bragazzi’s and that perhaps is its charm. Everything it does – coffee, sandwiches, gelato, Italian deli products – it does extremely well. The pavement tables are a real sun-trap too.

VINTEDGE This vintage emporium on the edge (geddit?) of Nether Edge/Abbeydale has been a revelation since it opened, with a constantly evolving roster of things to browse and buy. Everything from clothes to furniture to homewares is covered – it’s a one-stop-shop for all things retro.

SATAY YO BEER Pan-Asian street food is its USP and it does it very well, all washed down with some delightful craft or Asian beers. You’ll find everything from Malaysian beef rendang to Japanese gyozo. Our favourite are the Vietnamese summer rolls – worth the admission alone.

SPINNING DISCS Music-lovers paradise. Opened in April 2015 stocking new, reissued and second-hand vinyl. Recently expanded to offer an even greater collection. A place to hang-out and listen to great music.

The duo will be taking over DJ duties for the night with a free disco for customers in the Panorama Bar after the last race of the evening. Dixie said: “We absolutely can’t wait for the disco at Owlerton, it’s going to be so much fun, and we’d love to see lots of our listeners from Sheffield join us! “This will be my first visit to Owlerton but I’ve heard from loads of people that’s it’s a top night out. Great food, the excitement of greyhound racing and great music too! “We’ll be around to meet and greet listeners and, once the racing’s finished, get everyone on the dance floor with some top tunes!” From top class dining with spectacular views of the track, to exclusive packages made for any occasion, Owlerton is the perfect place for partygoers, companies and stag and hen groups looking for a fun and affordable night out. Trackside packages start from £6 for general admission or £10 for a 6 Pack Party Package, which gets groups of six or more admission, a racecard, chicken in a basket meal, two bets and one drink. Private executive boxes for groups of 12 or 24 people, with full waiting and bar service and a Tote betting runner to take bets, are available from £25 per person. The ticket price includes admission, a racecard, a hot and cold buffet plus access to a private balcony with great views of the live greyhound racing. Or you can experience the atmosphere of greyhound racing from the modern glass-fronted Panorama Restaurant. For £25 per person, you can enjoy a seasonal three-course meal prepared by highly experienced chefs, an extensive wine list, full waiting service and tote betting runners at your table while you can sit back and enjoy the best of the action. Emma said: “Dixie and I are really excited about making our Owlerton debut with what will be the coolest disco of the year! “We’re really looking forward to experiencing the excitement of greyhound racing and who knows, we might even win some money! “We love getting out and about across Yorkshire meeting local people and we hope to see lots of our listeners join us at Owlerton for what is sure to be a top night!” Heart Yorkshire broadcasts music and news across South and West Yorkshire seven days a week. KELHAM ISLAND Wish him luck… Our regular Whisky Files expert – Shakespeares’ Chris Bamford – is leaving for pastures new. We’re sorry to hear you’re leaving Shakespeares. How long have you been there?

I’ve been at Shakespeares, as manager, since a couple of months before we reopened in July 2011 after it had been closed for 18 months. How would you characterise your time there?

In the main it’s been great, helping build the pub up from next to nothing, save its reputation for live music and a decent, if perceived to be off the beaten track, location and a lot of character, to one of the essential, for many people, stops on the Real Ale trail and Sheffield’s Real Ale Pub of the Year two years after we opened. I’m very proud of what we’ve managed to achieve. What kind of legacy are you leaving behind?

We’ve built up a reputation for having amongst the finest selections of beer, whisky and gin in Sheffield (we’ve served over 4,000 different cask beers since we opened and as the whisky files testify, have one of the largest ranges of whisky in the city), none of which is likely to change after I’ve left – we already have a Magic Rock brewery tap takeover lined up for 7 October which should be awesome. Where are you off to?

I can’t say too much now, but myself and a friend are leading an attempt to resurrect another famous old venue in Sheffield city centre which has fallen on hard times, as both a craft beer pub and live music venue. I’m sure CityMag will be able to tell its readers more next month! What do make of the development/investment in Kelham Island?

It’s good to see the area finally being rejuvenated. A lot has changed in the ten years or so I’ve been around the area let alone the 30 or so since the Fat Cat first started the real ale pub trend. Hopefully the area will only become more vibrant as the investment pays off and the planned developments actually take shape. What can Sheffield do to capitalise on its brewing reputation?

Sheffield has a lot of excellent breweries, the likes of Abbeydale and Blue Bee have been making excellent beer for a few years while the likes of Lost Industry are blazing a craft beer-shaped trail into the future. I’m not sure there’s a lot more Sheffield can do, we have an excellent brewing scene and it’s only getting better. If you could raise a glass to your time at Shakespeares, what would be in it?

Well, given I’ve been writing the Whisky Files in here for the last year, I best pick a ‘dram’! I’d probably go for the Ardbeg Dark Cove which I picked as one of my final whiskies for the Files, or an Octomore, which is a peated classic and one of the first whiskies I picked. Cheers!

GRIND CAFÉ Kelham Island is one of the city’s fastest developing areas and the Grind, which has been open since 2010, epitomises everything the area is about. Independent and serving delicious lunches, brunches and breakfast with seriously good coffee to wash it all down with.

CHIMNEY HOUSE They’ve got the advantage of having a gorgeously restored building to impress but the team at the Chimney House have got everything spot on. The events space is definitely unique and don’t miss their popup events.

SHIP INN Following the theme of gorgeously restored buildings, the Ship Inn definitely follows suit. They’ve got the classic pub look absolutely nailed on with a range of beers to match.

KELHAM ISLAND MUSUEM

KRYNKL We’ve been watching this shipping container development with some interest and the end is getting closer. An October opening has been pencilled in where you’ll find The Milestone’s new concept restaurant Jöro as well as their rooftop bar, TRIB3 gym, a barbers, tattoist, menswear brand and much, much more. This could be the shape of things to come.

OUTLINES WANTS YOU

VIBE COCKTAIL There’s a new addition to the cocktail menus at The Forum and The Old House this month. Our sister site sheffieldvibe.com – the online magazine that shouts about all things Sheffield – has teamed up with the talented bartenders at True North Brew Co to come up with two limited edition drinks. Indulge your sweet tooth at The Old House with the delicious Strawberry Delight, a dessert cocktail bursting with fresh strawberries, strawberry liqueur, apple pie syrup and double cream. Over at The Forum, they’ve blended True North’s own Sheffield Dry Gin with orange-flavoured parfait amour, lemon juice, egg white and lemon juice. The result is the Blue Rinse, a seriously stylish purple/grey gin martini with a zesty orange twist. Both cocktails will be available from mid-September to midOctober for the special price of £6. See you at the bar!

We loved Outlines this year – and can’t wait for it to return in 2017. Plans are already underway – the weekend of 34 March as been pencilled in – and organisers are encouraging applications from upcoming artists now. Just see there website – outlinesfestival.com for details. The festival’s organiser, Kate Hewett, says: “New and unsigned artists are crucial to keeping a festival vibrant and exciting. With 2016’s Outlines bill, we were able to introduce a whole host of impressive emerging talent to festivalgoers and we’re looking forward to doing the same for our second year.” The event will be expanded for 2017 with up to 150 artists on the line-up and a brand new, two-day programme of events.

Tell us about your business.

Humpit was the first hummus and pitta bar in the north of England. We started off in Leeds as a pop-up and are celebrating our second birthday this month. We decided to open in Sheffield because it’s got a big street food scene, loads of students and logistically wise, it’s so easy to get here from Leeds. What is your ethos?

We make absolutely everything fresh every day, our salads are fresh every day, everything we do is freshly made. People like it because it’s simple, we don’t give much choice, people like that. They know exactly what they get. Forty per cent of our customers, in Sheffield and Leeds, are regulars and know what they want. People are creatures of habit. It’s nice and easy. Do you have any offers?

Our student offer is going to be 50 per cent off, which is the first time we’re trying this out. Only available from 2.30-4.30pm and only available until the end October. Show your student card and it’s 50 per cent off. I was a student, I know what it’s like. We’re hoping the student market will increase our buzz even more. You’re award winners.

We won a big award in 2015 by Virgin, it was a start-up food

award called Foodpreneur. We actually entered ourselves in but were competed with 300 other businesses. We got shortlisted, we won and got to meet Richard Branson. Tell us about the name.

Humpit just means hummus and pitta but you can think whatever you want of it. It’s cheeky, it’s a good brand, which is so important. We have an A-board outside saying ‘fancy a quickie?’ and people have been walking past and taking snaps and selfies. That’s marketing on it’s own because they’ll share that on Facebook etc. The name has done us a lot of good. It took me a while but it came to me. A lot of my friends didn’t like it but it’s worked. And what for the future?

We’re looking for another shop next year but I can’t reveal too much yet. Humpit, located at 45 Leopold Street, is within easy walking distance of both universities and many local offices.

Student loans and tight budgets simply aren’t built for a diet of caviar and champagne – much to our disappointment – but just how far can your pennies go? By Rachel Martin. COUNTING your cash and scrabbling around at the bottom of your bag for that elusive 50p is a fact of life for many of us living on a budget and getting fed and watered on a cost-effective financial plan can be a continual challenge. Believe me, I’ve been there. Let me start by saying I’m an average 20something, which means I’m pretty useless with my personal finance. Sure, I know I should be saving, and I put money aside for bills and rent (because even I know these are essential), but by the end of payday week I’ve almost wiped out my ‘free income’. And what’s worse? I honestly can’t tell you where the money goes. So, recent assertions that living on a mere £20 a week for food, and eat healthy too, sounded like I challenge I needed to take up. Despite my poor personal finance, I like to think I’m savvy when it comes to food shopping and can work with a pretty tight budget. And what better place to put my pennies to the test than Sheffield’s Moor Market. Being on a budget, I would never have thought to shop at the market, as I just presumed I could get better value elsewhere. Plus, with a limited budget of just £20 I thought I’d be lucky to pick up dinner for three days, let alone a week. Spoiler alert, I was wrong. I did it, and it was surprisingly easy. After explaining the reason behind my visit, which according to many vendors would be

enough of a budget to feed me for two weeks (I feel another challenge coming on) the traders were happy to share some encouraging money saving tips and tricks. From freezing left-overs in single portion sizes to be enjoyed at a later date, to relying on end-of-day discounts and looking out for damaged goods: “You can easily pick up whole loaves of bread for just pence this way, as well as all sorts of So, what exactly made it into my bags? other goodies and treats,” says 6 x pork sausages (£1.50) Waterall Brothers Ltd Suzanna of S & J’s pantry. 29 What we have here is a complex dark porter with a sweet malty base with touches of bitter orange, coffee and chocolate. This really is a delight whether you need a GF beer or not… our advice – everybody should try it.

Beer Central’s Sean Clarke looks at some of the best gluten-free and vegan beers.

*

WE get lots of different beer requests from our regular customers down at Beer Central and always try to satisfy when and where we can. From day one we’ve had lots of discussions about both vegan and gluten-free brews and have been able to access a very wide range of both. Around 50 per cent of the bottles/cans we stock are officially vegan and we’re happy to assist when customers call in the shop and want to take a look at our vegan options. Wold Top – Marmalade Porter –500ml bottle 5% ABV (gluten-free) Wold Top Brewery are based over in East Yorkshire, close to the coastline, just inland from sunny Bridlington. They have three GF beers within their range, including an IPA (Scarborough Fair) and a bitter (Against the Grain). In this particular case it’s unusual to get a gluten-free dark beer and so this one stands out from the crowd.

*

BrewDog – Vagabond Pale Ale – 330ml bottle 4.5% ABV (gluten-free and vegan) BrewDog (based in Aberdeenshire) started to brew hop forward beers back in 2007, and since then they have become major players within the craft beer scene across the world. They even opened a new brewery in the USA quite recently and are on a mission to bring craft beer to the people. Vagabond Pale Ale is an easy drinking bottle which combines citrus and tropical flavours with a light malt base that makes it a very well-balanced beer. It won’t blow your head off, but it won’t leave your tongue wondering where all the flavour is – it hits the spot and it’s well worth having a few cold ones in the fridge.

*

Brass Castle – Sunshine IPA 330ml cans 5.7% ABV (gluten-free and vegan) Brass Castle have developed an incredibly popular range of beers over the last few years following a successful expansion and move to Malton in North Yorkshire. They’re one of the few breweries who appeal to both the traditional real ale drinker and the more modern craft beer enthusiast. What we have here is a deliciously fruity India Pale Ale and one of my personal favourite beers. Sunshine is a Yorkshire version of the popular West Coast IPA style from the USA, plenty of hops, plenty of bitterness and lots and lots of satisfaction. What a bonus this is gluten-free!

31 The Last of the Whisky Files With The Shakespeare’s Chris Bamford. AS this is my last Whisky Files as manager of Shakespeares, I’ve abandoned the idea of an overarching theme (location, style, history, age…) and just picked three of, in my humble opinion, the best whiskies we’ve been lucky enough to be able to serve. One I have a certain connection with, too.

*

Gordon & Macphail Highland Park Cask Strength 2006

Highland Park was also the first distillery I ever visited, on a rainy family holiday in the early 2000s when I was too young to actually drink, while their excellent 12 year old was a present I was given when I was a student and was a classier alternative to double vodka lemonades in Gatecrasher (…that ages me!). This expression, from independent bottler’s G&M, is just under nine years old and, unusually for a Highland Park, matured in first fill ex-bourbon casks. The trademark underlying, heathery peat smoke notes abounds alongside vanilla and fruit and a hint of pepper, but there is less of the trademark honey flavours that official Highland Park bottlings tend to have. It’s botted, unfiltered and natural colour at 57.9% ABV and Shakespeares sell it for £4.20 per 25ml measure.

*

Edradour Barolo Cask Matured 2006

Edradour claims to be the smallest distillery in Scotland, based on the size of their spirit stills, although they have now been beaten,

if that is the right word, by the new Strathearn distillery. It was the second distillery I ever visited, on a Sheffield University Walking Club trip back in 2007, where the free tasters as part of the tour at 10am served as hair of the dog. Since 2002, the distillery has embarked on a programme of experimentation with different casks. This current version is aged in the northern Italian red wine barolo casks for its entire maturation period of over nine years so again, the wine very much dominates the aroma and flavour, with lots of fruit with a background nutty, oaky maltiness and a touch of cracked black pepper and mulled wine spiciness. Bottled without chill filtration or colouring at 46% ABV, we sell it for £3.50 for a single measure.

*

Ardbeg Dark Cove

This is from perhaps the distillery whose whiskies I rate the highest (although for me Ardbeg’s Islay neighbours Bruichladdich are up there too). Ardbeg specialise in the highly peated, smoky variety of Scotch whisky for which Islay is best known. Named after a local smugglers hideout dating back to before 1815 when the distillery started legal production, this is the darkest coloured whisky Ardbeg claim to have ever produced (it’s not that dark). Aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, the sherry really comes through, initially with some fruit cake and treacle toffee notes before the classic Ardbeg flavours of black coffee, dark chocolate, and background charcoal and smoked meats. It’s 46.5% ABV and given its rarity and quality, £6.30 a single measure. So, three of my favourites to finish. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading and I’ve possibly even inspired you to try something from the diverse world of whisky! I’m off to have a ‘dram’ of the Ardbeg Dark Cove now…!

New dishes at Tapas Revolution? Don’t mind if we do... SPANISH TV chef Omar Allibhoy brought the taste of summer to Meadowhall’s Tapas Revolution with five amazing new dishes – and CityMag was dying to try them out. The new dishes included gazpacho de sandia (traditional Andalusian chilled tomato soup with a watermelon twist); Galician Empanadillas (spinach and goat’s cheese parcels served with onion & saffron marmalade); Alitas de Pollo a la miel y limón (marinated crispy chicken wings with a lemon & honey dressing); Chuletas de cordero (roasted lamb chops marinated with spices & served with pomegranate and radish); and Ensalada de calabaza y Manchego (baby gem lettuce, roasted butternut squash,

Manchego cheese, raisin & pine nut vinaigrette). We were seriously impressed. Tapas Revolution is in a league of its own when it comes to ‘proper’ restaurant quality food. As well as the new additions, the stand-out dishes were the arroz negro (£5.25), black rice with prawns and squid served with alioli; and hueveos rotos (£5.50), baked chorizo, potatoes and egg. Keep up the fantastic work Omar and your team! www.tapasrevolution.com

33 Eating well on a budget Mr Pickles’ Paul Widdowson advises on how to watch the pennies

WHETHER you’re heading off to university or just need to cut back on your spending, you should try shopping at small independent stores when watching the pennies. Although supermarkets appear to be better value, with their 3 for 2 and BOGOF offers, we always found we’d spent much more than we originally planned, on things we didn’t even know we wanted, whenever we did our ‘big shop’. Shopping at independent stores doesn’t just mean we can avoid these enticing offers, it means we’re more likely to buy produce in smaller quantities too. And, I think this is important as there’s no point in buying that supermarket bumper pack of courgettes if most of them are going to get thrown away – no matter how cheap they were. Your local butcher will also help you save money by stocking a wide range of cuts, including the more unpopular, but cheaper items, and he’ll be able to advise on how to best cook them. This is something we pride ourselves on at Mr Pickles. Because we buy

the whole cow and lamb, we have all the cuts and can recommend something to suit any budget. Right now our beef skirt is a staff favourite. Although it can be cooked long and slow (it’s particularly good in a chilli or a ragu), it’s very good cooked hot and fast, making it perfect for a quick stir fry. We tend to slice it quite thin and add it for the very last minute or two of cooking, so it’s still a little pink in the middle. Neck of lamb is another good option – one that is so often overlooked. Try simmering neck chops for an hour in a little water, lemon juice and fresh thyme. It’s surprisingly fresh and light and tastes great served with a salad and crusty bread. We also stock some of the inexpensive pork cuts such as belly and cheeks. But we have to give special mention to the supereconomical ham hock. It’s great in pea and ham soup, or roasted with a honey and mustard glaze. Just scan the page with your phone to jump to our recipe blog.

34 It’s a bourbon thing... Danielle Mustarde looks at the Kentucky straights on offer at Portland House.

*

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage 2004, 43.3%, Bardstown, KY A lesser-known bourbon, Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage 2004 is the only one of the three which is bottled unblended to “preserve its individuality”, as its label proudly states. Each bottle has the barrel number and the date on which it was “barrelled” handwritten on its label. Enjoy this mature Kentuckian over ice to truly appreciate its sweet and spicy individuality.

WHILE we’re waiting for our late-summer gin selection to come together, I thought we’d take a look back at a few of the top picks from our well-attended American bourbon tasting last month. These three big and bold Kentucky straights range from the wellknown to something a little more mature and all make a great choice for these hot and humid September evenings – just be sure to pile in the ice.

* *

Maker’s Mark 45%, Loretto, KY A well-known character among the shelves of most bars here in the UK, Maker’s Mark is the go-to Kentucky Straight Bourbon. This is unsurprisingly so as it’s a smooth and fullflavoured number which works just as well over a couple of straightedged ice cubes as it does as a stateside whisky and coke. A perfect place to start if you’re new to the US’s take on the whisky drink. 1792 Small Batch, 46.85% Bardstown, KY This stout, gold-topped bottle has real shelf presence. Another “small batch” bourbon, 1792, takes its name from the year that Kentucky joined the United States of America – neat fact, right? This rye-rich bourbon has managed to stay relatively under the radar until quite recently, but 1792 shouldn’t be looked over – it scored an impressive 94.5 points in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible back in 2003. Y’all don’t know whatcha’ missin’.

If you haven’t been to 8oz Burger Co yet, you’re missing out.

Words: Richard Abbey

FOR those who like nothing more than a challenge, a visit to 8oz Burger Co on Leopold Street this month could leave you feeling a little smug – and very full. Ok, so the fact that they have 30 different burgers on their menu and September has 30 days is nothing more than a coincidence… or is it? Purely for health reasons we wouldn’t encourage you to go all Morgan Spurlock on us, but there are few challenges that might satisfy your competitive needs. For those who can stand the heat, reaper wing roulette is a good place to start. It does exactly what it says; take a chance on one or three Carolina reaper chilli wings (the hottest chilli in the world) amongst six or 12 and pray you choose correctly. If size is more your thing, The Kitchen Sink (£20) should fill your boots – two 8oz beefburgers, chicken breast, sausage, BBQ pulled pork, shredded brisket, chorizo, pepperoni, smoked bacon, cheddar cheese sauce and onion rings. How you fit all that between a brioche bun (gluten-free is available at no extra cost) and then get it in your mouth is anyone’s guess. But it doesn’t end there. The ultimate Man v Food challenge comes in the form of The Big Five-O (£25), the big 50oz burger. Four burgers, smoked bacon, cheese sauce… Eat that and half a pound of fries in 15 minutes and you get it all for free. Of course there’s much more to the 8oz Burger Co than the

challenges. It’s a cool, rustic kind of joint – think pallets for tables and exposed brick walls – almost canteen-esque, but it works. There’s a good selection of beers in the bottle fridge from the likes of Brewdog and Anchor Steam Brewery, as well as bourbon cocktails, soft drinks and milkshakes. So to the menu and where to start. You’ll find beef burgers, chicken burgers, pork burgers, even homemade falafel burgers as well as toppings that range from fried eggs and waffles to chilli and cheese. “For us, it’s all about quality,” explains manager Matt. “We have once classic beef patty recipe which has been honed to perfection. We work closely with our butchers to get the right cuts of meat from the finest British beef. We don’t mess around with that recipe – we just allow the customers to enhance it with some equally delicious toppings and extras.” We can definitely attest to Matt’s claims, the beefburgers were indeed exceptional – and large. The Cattledrive and Matador (both £11) were both delicious if a little tricky to eat but made for great fun all the same. Fries are included in the price, although it’s an extra £2 for the sweet potato variety but they were well worth it. We also shared a portion of ‘dirty slaw’ (£1.50). Students visiting 8oz Burger Co enjoy a ten per cent discount and if you’re after a quick lunch, they offer a ‘build you own burger’ menu for £5. Can you build something different than the 30 burgers already on offer? Now there’s a challenge. 8oz Burger Co 9 Leopold Street, Sheffield, S1 2GY Tel: 07956 947771 www.8ozburgerco.co.uk

Does Trippets Lounge Bar have Sheffield’s best gin collection? Stephanie Burns went to find out.

IT’S A GIN THING I THOUGHT I knew quite a lot about gin. I know what I like (Silent Pool) and what I don’t (Hendricks) and am quite a way through Ian Buxton’s ‘101 Gins to Try Before You Die’. But then I paid Debbie Shaw, owner of Trippets Lounge Bar, a visit. What this lady doesn’t know about gin isn’t worth knowing and, after a couple of hours in her company, my eyes had been opened to a whole new way of tasting my favourite tipple. There are 59 gins – and counting – at Trippets, and Debbie prides herself on finding one to suit everyone. The ‘sniff test’ is her primary approach. Whether you’re a regular customer seeking something new or a gin-phobe determined not to enjoy a single drop, Debbie has a 99 per cent success rate with this method. I’d never have detected the notes of cardamom, saffron, citrus, honey, Persian lime, pink grapefruit, sweet lemon, lavender (is there anything distillers won’t infuse?) without Debbie’s guidance. But from my reaction to each sniff, she navigated me through the collection and helped me discover some I’d never even heard of. Of course, there’s no such thing as one tonic or garnish to fit all. There are five tonics to choose from (Fever Tree, Fever Tree Mediterranean, Fentimans, 1724 and slimline) and a variety of garnishes, all chosen to enhance the botanicals in each bottle. “A lot of people say they don’t like gin,” said Debbie, “but often it’s the bitterness of Indian tonic water that’s been putting them off.” If you’d prefer to taste rather than sniff your way, Trippets’ Gintuition gin flights are great. It’s £13.50 for three gins and one tonic, and they’re divided up by geography. “Most of us don’t have a taste memory,”

explained Debbie, “so it’s really nice to taste them side by side.” I made a mental note to come back for the Yorkshire flight: Sir Robin of Locksley garnished with pink grapefruit, Masons with lime, and Sheffield Dry Gin with dehydrated orange and black pepper. Yum. So why is there such an interest in gin? “Everything comes round in fashions,” said Debbie. “It was all about cocktails after prohibition in the thirties, then vodka, then in the eighties classic cocktails came back in fashion and things like the bramble were created. Gin has been gaining popularity since then. Recently, there’s been a massive resurgence in craft distilling and it’s worth billions of pounds to this country.” Gin isn’t Trippets’ only draw; they didn’t win the 2016 Lux Award for best new bar and restaurant for no reason. They’re also well known for their live music every Friday and Saturday night. It’s mainly jazz, with a sprinkle of old blues, Latin and acoustic thrown in for good measure. They also have 14 wines, six types of fizz and several rums for those who really don’t fancy gin. In the kitchen, Debbie’s husband Carl cooks up a seriously good selection of tasting plates – starter-sized portions that are perfect for sharing. The Sir Robin of Locksley cured salmon, served with pink grapefruit and gin-pickled cucumber – one of their most popular dishes – sounds particularly tempting. I couldn’t leave without asking a question that had been on my mind since I stepped foot in Trippets – what is Debbie’s favourite gin? “I don’t think they’ve made it yet,” she said with a smile, “so I’ll need to keep trying them all.”

Find your hill with a view, says Russell Cutts of Russell’s Bike Shed. SHEFFIELD, it’s known for its steel, it’s known for its special relish and it’s known for its hills. Now, if you are from other parts of the UK then you might think you know what a hill is; be prepared to be surprised, shocked and exhausted. Sheffield and Yorkshire in general has produced some of the best hill climbing cyclists this country has ever produced and there is good reason for that. Just in Sheffield alone, Jenkin Road, Blake Street, Upper Allen Street, Hagg Hill and Lodge Lane all strike fear into many cyclists but for some these are everyday rides on their commute to work. Don’t be put off though they are after all just hills and there is always a way around. Cycling in Sheffield needs lots of small gears, you’ll spin a lot but you’ll get to the top. Singlespeeds and fixies are definitely not

recommended except for the seriously fit or those just riding along Ecclesall Road to Hunters Bar. Your daily cycling commute needn’t be a strain so if you do intend to cycle around Sheffield, invest in an Ordnance Survey map. If you follow Google you may end up on Blake Street! Whichever route you go, straight up or finding a gentle windy route round, the spectacle you get at the top of any hill around here is worth the effort so don’t forget to turn your head and gaze across this amazing city and beyond. At Russell’s Bicycle Shed we can help you find a bike to suit your ride, whether it’s second-hand or brand new we can get a bike to suit you. Visit our shops at Sheffield Station or 92 Burton Road, Neepsend.

We love a denim jacket as much as the next person but you know what we love more than a denim jacket? Double denim.

Becca Linnard

1. If you plan to wear a denim two-piece, either match your denim blues perfectly or choose two significantly different shades. 2. Make sure the fit is right. Your denim outfit needs to either come in at the waist or be paired with slim-fitting jeans to avoid looking like a walking sack of denim. 3. Use a belt to break things up. Blue denim looks phenomenal with a brown leather belt. It’s a classic western look which contrasts the two colours perfectly. 4. If choosing to wear a denim shirt with a denim skirt, get your legs out. Wearing black tights tends to break up the neutral relaxed vibe. Plus, blue complements the orange tones in your skin so the denim will make your legs appear slightly more bronzed than they actually are! Win. 5. Break up your denim with a white tee. This look is spot on for both men and women. If you’re only just losing your double denim virginity then this is a great way to play it safe with a really fresh, timeless look.

Linocut artist James Green. WE’RE delighted to welcome James Green as our cover star this month. We’ve long been admirers of his work and it’s great to see one of his iconic Sheffield prints on the front of our magazine. James has been a full-time artist for six years having previously worked at the University of Sheffield. He specialises in linocut printing, a technique adopted by the likes of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, which involves cutting a piece of linoleum with a design before inking it and printing it onto paper or fabric. As well as his Sheffield-scapes, James’ work has also featured birds, animals, dinosaurs and the odd cyclist or two. You’ll find his work in any of Museum Sheffield’s shops and he has also exhibited at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the Sheffield Print Fair (of which he is a founding member) as well as further afield. He’s also done

commissions for the likes of Paul Smith Menswear, The Folk Forest musical festival and the Hepworth Gallery. More recently James has designed one of the Herd of Sheffield elephants – he created a donkey-themed elephant entitled ‘Donkeys in Elephantland’. In case you’re wondering, you’ll it near the University of Sheffield’s Firth Court building, but you’ll have to be quick, they’re only there until 5 October before they’re auctioned off for charity. James has also appeared on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year and Landscape Artist of the Year.

Horror, documentary, and David Bowie.

AS the summer sun starts to leave us and the nights draw in, what better place to be than your local independent cinema – beer in hand, bum on seat, ready to enjoy some of September and October’s new releases. Friday 16 September sees the release of Hunt For The Wilderpeople – a rollicking New Zealand adventure with an unlikely protagonist – a small, rotund boy with a penchant for tracksuits, trucker caps and running away from home. Taikia Waititi, the director of the hilarious What We Do In The Shadows, brings us a total hit for the beginning of Autumn. You’ll love it. The same Friday sees the rerelease of The Man Who Fell To Earth – a chance to see David Bowie’s interstellar performance as an alien who falls from grace on our planet. Look out for a Bowie night in our bar to celebrate this iconic sci-fi film and the late, great Bowie. Is there life on Mars? You know how the story goes. Man meets woman. They

fall in love and marry. They divorce. They’re both abducted by a North Korean dictactor to make films. Some stories are stranger than fiction, and The Lovers and The Despot is one of them. This is an incredible story of the couple, who were forced to produce and star in films under Kim Jong Il’s direction, and their daring escape from the brutal regime. A must-see for anyone who likes conspiracy theories and Louis Theroux documentaries. If you liked 28 Days Later, you will love The Girl With All The Gifts – a British zombie film with a difference. Earth has been infected by a mysterious fungus, turning people into zombies (not again). These flesh-eaters retain some of their human qualities, leading to terrible moral dilemmas – are they human, or monster? A young girl could hold the clue to human – and non-human – survival. If you missed this year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest, don’t despair – we’re bringing the best of the fest back to our

screens! First up is The Charro of Toluquilla – the moving story of a mariachi dancer trying to make the best life for his daughter. Look out for more amazing docs later in the year. October brings one of the best horror films we’ve seen in recent years – Under The Shadow. A woman trapped in war-torn Tehran with her young daughter begins to fear she is being haunted – and it’s

not long before the jump scares kick in. A truly skincrawling, dread-inducing horror with a powerful political message. There’s also The Girl On The Train – the novel we were all glued to last year, turned into a film starring Emily Blunt. Whether you want to be scared silly or enjoy a cult classic, we’ve got the film (and beer, ice cream, burger) for you at the Showroom.
