Welcome to CityMag... YOU can’t help but feel festive at this time of year, particularly with everthing that’s going on in the city. From Thor’s Tipi in the Peace Gardens to the markets and all the gorgeouslydecorated independent stores, I don’t think Sheffield has looked as Christmassy in a long time. One person riding the crest of the Christmas wave is Shaun Doane, whose Everly Pregnant Brothers will be taking over the O2 Academy for their annual festive shindig. ‘Big Shaun’ has also made some interesting new year’s resolutions; find out what he’s got in store on page 36. This month’s cover star, Steve Goodison, supplied us with an equally festive-themed cover – who doesn’t love John Lennon’s Happy Xmas (War Is Over)? – and is giving away a framed print in our competition on page 30. ON SCREEN… ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY 16 December Disney’s first Star Wars spin-off film is still something of an unknown quantity. Will it follow the traditional SW format or will this truly be a standalone film. What we do know is that it will tie in nicely with the original trilogy, following a band of rebels –led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) – as they set out to steal the plans to the Empire’s Death Star. Darth Vader will make an appearance, although how much you’ll have to wait and see. It should whet the appetite nicely before next year’s Episode VIII.

10 There’s a stronger emphasis on food at the Devonshire Cat but the huge selection of ales remains
It’s all change (almost) at the Devonshire Cat and boy is it impressive. IT’D be fair to say that we love what the team behind the Devonshire Cat have done with the place. It’s pretty spot on. From the newly-located island bar – complete with funky geometric tiling – to the bench seating and raised banquettes, it’s a whole lot more comfortable, cosy and welcoming. And that’s only half the story. The introduction of restaurant manager Faith Baxter, teamed with head chef Andy Mason, has put much more emphasis on the food, which works harmoniously with the beer they have on offer – which is lots – but more of that later. The British menu is sourced locally as much as possible and influenced by the many ales on tap (it would be rude not too), so don’t be surprised to
see the likes of fresh mussels in wheat beer broth, Deception battered fish finger sandwich and drunken sticky toffee pudding made with Yorkshire Blackout. Trust us when we say it’s as good as it sounds. As the original real ale pub in the city centre, the Abbeydale Breweryowned Devonshire Cat still has plenty of ales on offer; general manager and ale aficionado Liz Casserly oversees a raft of cask ales, kegs as well as two dedicated gluten-free lines as well as the vast array of bottled beers which are housed in the rear of the bar. If you’ve got to peruse the menu (it’s
encyclopaedic) you should find something you’re looking for. If there’s an ale you’re particularly fond of there’s a discounted take-home price on bottles as well as growlers which can last in your fridge for up to a fortnight. If you’re not a dedicated ale drinker there’s a great selection of cocktails as well as over 70 whiskies. There are three distinct areas to the Devonshire Cat that cater for groups, couples, friends and families, one of which can be velvet-curtained off for private parties up to 70 people. The latter even has its own section of bar so you don’t have to fight through the crowds. The aim is to appeal to different people at different times of day, which, at this early stage, seems to be working. The Christmas season

means it’s been a busy opening few weeks, with plenty taking advantage of the new 2am late licence. At present, food is served 12-10pm Monday to Saturday and 12-8pm on Sundays. The new year should see the introduction of events at The Devonshire Cat, including tap takeovers, ‘meet the brewer’ talks, music and possibly open mic nights.

11 Enjoy a Yorkshire Christmas dinner with Mr Pickles’
WHEN we think Christmas dinner, many of us have visions of big turkey roasts. But turkeys weren’t even introduced to the UK until the 16th century, when, quite fittingly for us, a Yorkshireman brought some across from America. In fact, the goose is the original Christmas bird. Which, when you learn a little more about it, makes perfect sense. Luck, or evolution, would have it that the goose is perfect for eating at Christmas. The goslings hatch in spring so they’ll have grown for a good eight or nine months by the time the festive season is in full swing. They’ll have developed a good layer of fat to fight off the cold weather too. And it’s this layer of fat which makes the goose quite the luxurious option for Christmas. It adds a lovely richness to the meat whilst keeping it succulent and extra tasty. Just serve with a tart apple sauce to offer contrast and cut through some of the richness. But there’s no denying the popularity of turkey. History has it that Henry VIII was the first British king to eat turkey in the 1500s,
but it wasn’t until the 1800s that Edward VII made it fashionable at Christmas. And, although turkeys were considered a luxury until the 1950s, they’re now more of a throw away commodity thanks to intensive farming methods. Having said that, all our Christmas birds, whether free range or barn reared, are traditionally farmed which results in a much tastier meat as well as a clearer conscience. And with the luxurious rib of beef, sirloin and fillet, our beef cuts are always popular at Christmas. Even the more budget friendly salmon cut and brisket can make quite the showstopper and they have the added bonus of being easy to cook and carve. Pork too is always in demand at this time of year and we’ve had a few customers ask us about the Italian porchetta. Traditionally a whole hog would be cooked on a spit, but most recipes now call for a pork loin and a piece of belly to be rolled together, with a fennel, chilli and herb paste in between, and then tied and roasted in the oven. The end result is incredibly tasty thanks to the gorgeous Italian flavours and the two different cuts of meat. It’s also easy to carve, sits well alongside traditional Christmas trimmings and eats well when cold, so perfect for Boxing Day leftovers. Indian food can be quick and easy. Just ask the guys at Ashoka. I MAYBE wrong but I think a lot of people are put off cooking Indian food at home because there’s normally a long list of ingredients and steps involved. Maybe you have some of the 19 ingredients necessary that Mrs Jaffrey listed but that Schwarz cumin powder at the back of the cupboard went out of date in 1987. When the first Sheffield Cook Book came out we put a recipe in called Cricket Pakora™. I chose this because I remember my dad teaching me how to make it when I was at university. No finite measuring involved, just throw the ingredients together and within reason you’ll yield a decent result. These little pillow light pakoras were made by my gran on my father’s side whenever India was playing cricket. Dad says before the advent of Sky Sports HD the village used to gather around an old wireless set and listen to the game communally. The pakoras were deemed as good luck by gran and the tradition continued when my dad moved to the UK in the mid seventies where he made them for fellow students at the University of Sheffield. The recipe is below, good luck… just don’t make them when England is playing India in the cricket please :)
GRANDMA’S CRICKET PAKORAS
TM
Makes approximately 20 pakoras 1 normal tea mug of gram or chickpea flour Water 1 level teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon sugar
1 green chilli, chopped 1 medium onion white or red, finely diced ½ medium-sized courgette, finely diced Sunflower or vegetable oil for frying
Method 1. Sieve the flour into a large bowl. Add salt and baking powder then a little water at a time until you have a thick batter. 2. Finely dice the onion and courgette and combine with the batter. 3. Heat the oil to frying temperature (Grandma used to put a little batter into the oil and if the batter rose to the surface within a few seconds it was hot enough). 4. Using your hand, scoop a golf ball-sized amount of mixture and place gently into the oil. Fry until golden (a few minutes). 5. Serve with Srircha hot sauce and natural yoghurt or Heinz tomato ketchup (India’s favourite condiment) and lime wedges.

AT Christmas, minds turn to cheese boards. A meal should end with one, and the choice is wide. The perfect cheese board will contain something for every taste, as far as possible. There should be varieties of colour, texture and flavour in order to give the maximumimpact. Ideally there should be something strong, mild, creamy, blue, perhaps something smoked and something coloured. People eat with their eyes, so variety and arrangement are important. Use a coloured board or
background, and add some fruit, apple or grapes are good. These also go well with the cheese. Blue Monkey are based in Nottingham and this cheeky festive favourite always get people smiling. As you’d guess from the brewery name, monkeys and apes play a big part in theming the beers and Bludolph is no exception to that. What is different about this beer is its style. Many Christmas beers tend to be winter warmers, dark and often using seasonal spices, but this one is a hoppy pale ale using US hops to provide a fruity citrus flavour and a welcome hoppy hit over the holiday period. For breakfast, it’s got to be a toasted breakfast wrap. It’s filled with crispy potatoes, veggie sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes and baked beans. Lunch-wise, I’d recommend a toastie stuffed with griddled aubergine, pesto, hummus, sundried tomato and rocket. And a peanut butter flapjack – we were surprised by how popular these are, so now we make them regularly. Your view on the vegan/vegetarian scene in Sheffield?
It’s so, so good. Having managed Fuel, a veggie cafe in Manchester, for eight years before moving over here, I have witnessed a significant change in peoples’ attitudes towards vegetarian and vegan food, and it finally feels like that change is being represented by new businesses. It’s great to be able to go to Make No Bones, or Burger Lolz for some food after work! The popularity of these new ventures, along with an increasing number of people opting to go meat-free, also seems to have encouraged non-veggie businesses to broaden their options, and more people are getting to see that veggie/vegan food can be delicious and exciting, and doesn’t need to be an afterthought on a menu. Whilst all of our food is vegetarian, many, if not most of our customers, are not – they are just happy to go meat-free, and by keeping our food full of flavour, our portions hearty and our prices reasonable, we now have a lovely bunch of regulars who come back for more! What is in store for the future?
Well, in the run up to Christmas, we are taking pre-orders for festive goodies such as Christmas dinners sold ready to cook, available to be collected on 23 and 24 December. In the new year, we are hoping to get to some of Sheffield’s fantastic markets and community events, selling tasty snacks, and pots of our homemade pesto, hummus and salsas.

Cubana celebrate UK rum capital accolade with new music and cocktail lounge After a 10,000-mile round trip to source the most expensive rum in the world, Cubana in Sheffield’s Leopold Square swept the board at the 10th annual Rum Barrel Awards, beating more than 60 entries from across the UK. The venue’s first dedicated rum menu is the result of months of research. Assistant manager John Wickham said: “Our menu is extensive, but also personal and informative – there’s a well-balanced selection which includes many obscure, delicious and affordable expressions of rum.” Cubana also officially launched its new live music and cocktail lounge, helping to celebrate its accolade, as well as encouraging customers to sample their rum-inspired cocktails. BOARDWALK NO-GO Not long ago we spoke to the former managers of Shakespeares and The Three Tuns - Chris Bamford and Kate Major – about their exciting plans for legendary, long abandoned Sheffield venue The Boardwalk. The pair had plans to collaborate with some of the city’s favourite breweries to stock the bar, bring in some independent street food traders to keep people fed and bring live music back to the Boardwalk’s stage. But now, due to a whole host of legal issues, plans have fallen through, and the pair are gutted.

In the nineties, Niche was home to hedonistic, underground club nights from midnight to midday. In 2017 it’s set to return, but with strict rules about who gets past the bouncers, which change depending on whether you’re a guy or a girl. On 28 January Niche will open its doors again, but girls have to be at least 21, and guys at least 25 to get in. Nothing like outdated 90s sexism to go with your throwback nineties tunes on a Saturday night! Way back before the millennium Niche was legendary. The club forged the way for a huge underground clubbing scene that exploded across the country, but not everyone was impressed, and in 2005 a police raid forced the club to close. Throughout the noughties the club tried to come back a few times, first as Club Vibe then as Niche, but on Charter Row, rather than at the original Sidney Street venue. Again and again problems with the police and the council forced the club to shut down. Now Niche is back once again, but instead of throwing massive, midnight to midday parties, the club is keeping the authorities firmly on side this time, no matter what their loyal following of fans think.
23 More Annie Sheffield Theatres has announced that their major new revival of the Irving Berlin musical Annie Get Your Gun is to extend its run for one week due to public demand. The production opened on 8 December and will now run until 21 January. Aimed straight at the heart, Irving Berlin’s sensational musical from the Golden Age of Broadway includes such classics as There’s No Business Like Show Business, Anything You Can Do and I Got The Sun In The Morning, as well as whip-cracking choreography from Sheffield favourite, Alistair David. STREET FOOD MARKET There’s another street food market in the works, this time in the city centre at Trafalgar Warehouse. Held on Monday 12 and 19 December, it will offer street food from local traders as well as beer from Brew Foundation. It’ll open 5-9pm.

SOUTH SEA TURNING BACK THE TIDE IN BROOMHILL?

It’s never been the jewel in Broomhill’s crown and following its closure in the summer, the South Sea in Broomhill has been sitting empty, gaining eyesore status. But now, the pub has been snapped up by new owners, who are planning to ditch the previous name and reputation of the South Sea and transform the place into Caribbean-inspired bar, lounge and grill called Blues Bar. It’s all the brainchild of Anton Smith. “It’s a new venture I’m doing with my Mum, so it’s more of a family business,” said Anton. “I enjoy cooking and I enjoy good music, so why not combine the two?” With room for 200 people inside, the South Sea has huge potential to be a Broomhill big-hitter, if they get it right. But Anton has a plan for success. He wants to steer the bar away from its old reputation – the place was shut down after licensing issues with under 18s – and become a real community hub.

Trapeze Kids is a new children’s clothing and lifestyle store on Sharrowvale Road. We stock a carefully curated selection of design-led clothing, toys, books, homeware, skincare and gifts for kids and families, sourced from ethically and environmentally responsible brands from across the UK and Europe. I’ve worked in kidswear for the last ten years, ranging from high street buying departments to independents and brands, I was itching to take a leap of faith and create a store concept that offered something a little different. I knew lots of the brands I’m working with now weren’t available in Sheffield and after spending most of my career in London felt ready for a change of scenery, Sharrowvale Road seemed like the perfect spot for the store.

Products are predominantly unisex, giving kids the opportunity to dress and play without the traditional gender stereotyping seen so often on the high street, and allowing for maximum hand-me-down potential. Also, the store is as engaging for children as it is for adults. The space has been created to allow kids to be able to interact with the store in a relaxed setting, they can play with all the toys on display or sit at the little vintage school desk to colour in which means they get to enjoy themselves and mums and/or dads get to browse in relative peace. Your current standout product?
The range of ‘Little People Big Dreams’ books have been really popular so far. They are beautifully illustrated and heart-warming stories of women in history who overcame adversity to achieve great things. In hardback, they are a real heirloom item. Also, the Arne Jacobsen alphabet collection tableware has done very well; the alphabet cups work for all ages. What has brought you to Sheffield, especially Sharrowvale Road?

CityMag caught up with spraytanner to the stars, Carly Hobbs. LET’S be honest, Saturday nights just wouldn’t be the same without Strictly Come Dancing. The glitz, the glamour, Ed Balls almost dropping his partner… there’s just something about the BBC’s prime time Male pro danc dancing show that draws in a recorders breaking audiences week in, week out. Who needs the X-Factor when you’ve got the feel-good factor? At the heart of this year’s show – well, the beating heart of backstage – is Carly Hobbs, the show’s official ‘Head of Tanning’. Now there’s a job title if ever I heard one. If you haven’t guessed already, she’s the one responsible for giving the stars and dancers their glow. Yup, she’s a spray-tanner extraordinaire and she’s based in Sheffield, which means getting that ‘just of out of Strictly’ look is now easier than you think. But there’s more to this girl than meets the eye… Where are you from?
I grew up in Crewe, went to university in Sheffield, lived in London for ten years and am now back in Sheff after falling in love with a Yorkshireman in Ibiza. I commute to London and Manchester for shoots and clients between my Ecclesfield downtime/tan time. Tell us about your background?
Carly’s favourite piece of kit
After training as a journalist at the University of Sheffield, I moved to London to work on glossy magazines like Smash Hits, Sugar and Fabulous, shooting, editing and writing about all things beauty, celeb, fashion and lifestyle. I loved setting up shoots but wanted to be part of them so attended London College Of Fashion to learn the craft of a MUA and CLMA in Manchester for a hairstylist skill set. Super safe and instantly confidence-boosting, I learnt how to spray on the perfect bronzed colour under the watchful eye of celebrity tanner Jules Hepstonstall. Assisting I then built up my own client list, both celeb and non, adding perfectly glowy skin to all models’ skin on set too. I then signed as brand ambassador for Sienna X, an awardwinning UK brand, which is incredible. What’s your regular day job?
There’s no such thing for me – every day and week is different. Shoots and TV show tans, hair and makeup requests often come in last minute so I juggle them around with private tans, writing deadlines, publicity for my first book – Supermodel Tips (out now at Amazon, Oliver Bonas & Urban Outfitters – blatant plug alert) – and also having a social life! I’ve just started building up my Sheffield private client base for bespoke spray tans, aka ones that look like the best, glorious version of your own skin - think THAT holiday bronzed look. I have been popping up my spray tan tent up in houses all over the city and surrounding South Yorkshire area. Sheff residents seem to love it and doing people’s tans is the absolute best bit of my job. The only day I can’t take tan bookings for until Christmas are Fridays as I am Head of Tanning this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing. It’s my real life dream come true backstage each week ensuring everyone from Danny Mac to Louise and Ed Balls have glows to go. I tan all the dancers too, even Claudia and Tess when they request one. I’ve done models and celebs, both with tanning and makeup, before through shoots. Last year I worked on something for X Factor and ended up being interviewed on the VT! Fun. I’ve done live tans on Radio X too with Sienna X, and filmed a little for It Takes Two, the Strictly spin-off this year. Any funny stories?
What happens in the tan tent stays there! Sorry! Everyone, both celeb and client get full confidentially for me! I will say this year on Strictly though it’s been the year of the man tan – Ed Balls, Danny and Judge Rinder all love it!
How did you get the Strictly gig? Who’s been the best to work with?
Years ago I assisted on the show, then this year the producers, via an industry friend recommendation, asked me to be head of tanning. Obviously I said yes!
I love everyone I work with, the most memorable has to be Lindsay Lohan. I tanned her at her at her house for a big event in London, it was incredible.
How long have you been doing it?
I started, along with my tanning assistant Olivia, in August for all the pre-record shows – when the dancers get paired with their celebrity partners. And I will be tanning right through until Christmas – it’s been the best fourand-a-half month job ever! We’ve just done Blackpool, which was so amazing it all felt like a dream!
What’s your favourite part of Strictly?

Watching all the dancers and celebs do their Friday run through between tanning appointments, sitting in the ballroom getting a glimpse of what they’re going to perform is such a treat and very special.
Daft question, but what does it involve?
Every week, on Fridays, I set up my tan tent, paper pants and tanning gun backstage at the Strictly studio. The celebs and dancers then come to see me for their private spray tan between rehearsals, filming and costume fittings. Each week we discuss the kind of tan they want, from super glowy to subtlety natural, and they get it sprayed on. The actual tan only takes 7.5 minutes – Sienna X is so easy. I prep the skin first, do the tan, then go in for finishing

Shak Jackson, specialist in sports massage, explains the benefits of vacuum and dry cupping. PEOPLE have different views about cupping and not very many people seem to understand it fully. Here is a description of the type of cupping I provide and the benefits. I usually combine cupping and sports massage in a session. Vacuum cupping therapy, also known as dry cupping, eliminates the use of fire and heat completely. In this form of cupping, a pump is attached to the top of the cup and a vacuum is created by pumping the air out of the cup. This then lifts the skin and the tissues creating a reverse effect of general massage. The mechanism used is simple. A connector links the cup to the pump that sucks the air out. Once the optimum amount of suction is created, the valve on the top of the cup is closed and the connector and pump are disconnected.
The cups can then either be left in the same position for a few minutes to bring blood to the surface, helping with the healing process, or the cups can be moved along the skin to perform massage. This is a very common and popular type of cupping because there is no flame needed to create the vacuum and there is complete control over the amount of suction created. The skin is never damaged, in many cases there may be a darkened appearance on the skin where the cups have been placed or moved, but this clears up within a few days. The procedure of cupping should always be pain free and in my experience, people seem to find it less painful/uncomfortable than a traditional sports or deep tissue massage.

Pop artist Steve Goodison shares his music-inspired talents for this month’s opening shot. And he has a Christmas treat for you, too. Tell us about your cover.
Have you done any commissions?
My cover artwork is a John Lennon portrait, drawn into the lyrics of ‘War Is Over’. I tried to create something with a Christmas theme!
I am currently working on a Johnny Cash and June Carter picture, which is going to be being given as a wedding present.
And this ties in with your new exhibition at The Forum?
What/who is your inspiration?
Yes, I currently have an exhibition called ‘The Beatles & The Stones’, it’s a collection of portraits which are inspired by both bands.
Mr Daniels, my old art teacher. Which other artists do your admire?
I really like the Sheffield based artist Andrew Hunt.
What’s your background?
I originally started off doing a graphic design course for two years in Sheffield, from their I got a job working as a graphic designer. I did that for a couple of years, then got a job working at a screenprinters. I have worked in the print industry ever since, but art is something I have always enjoyed in my spare time. How would you describe your style?
I would class it as realism, I started out just doing portraits, but I think since I’ve introduced text and lyrics into my artwork, it’s given my pictures a different dimension.
What would be your dream project?
I was always into re-designing record sleeves as a kid, so I’d love to create something for an album cover. What does the future hold?
I’ve started working on a new set of pictures which I’m hoping to exhibit early next year, it’s going to feature a few familiar Sheffield faces, but with a bit of a twist! Any exciting plans for Christmas?
I’ve got two young kids, so I’m looking forward to spending time with them.

Family also plays a key part in the highly-anticipated Lion, a sensitive yet powerful feature based on the true story of a young Indian boy who, after being separated from his family and adopted by an Australian couple, finds his lost home using Google Earth. With Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel offering a magnetic lead performance, as well as a compelling and nuanced turn from Nicole Kidman as his adoptive mother, it’s sure to be a big winner come awards season. Things just got even better... Christian Kent has joined the team at The Summer House.
THE Summer House is a venue for all occasions and changes afoot are set to enhance its reputation even further. John Tompkins and Kate Cavan, owners of Dore-based restaurant, are excited to announce the appointment of Christian Kent as new executive head chef. Christian brings with him more than 30 years’ of experience in the restaurant industry, having worked with some of the most highly reputable hotels and restaurants
like Claridges and The Savoy in London but most locally known as chef patron of the legendary Blue Room Brasserie. In his role as executive head chef at The Summer House, Christian will oversee all food aspects of the restaurant and bar area, keeping in line with the Summer House style of classic British cuisine with a twist. Christian’s cooking style is defined by fresh, quality ingredients used to create dishes the people of Sheffield
know and love. The Summer House is a relaxed restaurant open from breakfast through to dinner, seven days a week, holding up to 50 guests. Everly Pregnant Brother Shaun Doane is full of Christmas spirit – and ready for a festive night to remember. FOR many, Christmas in Sheffield means only one thing. And we’re not talking ‘mad Friday’ on West Street, I’m talking the Everly Pregnant Brothers’ annual festive shindig. Santa hats, silly songs, special guests and a right good ol’ Christmas knees-up. It just wouldn’t be the same without it. This year’s sell-out gig, loving titled Crapmas Party, is back at the O2 Academy on Saturday 10 December. So should we expect anything different? By and large probably not, but the band are excited about the support. “We’ve got a great support band, Jungle Lion,” raves largerthan-life frontman Shaun Doane. “They’re a 12-piece ska band and they play all your favourites – Specials, Madness, The Beat, Selecter, Bad Manners… they have a full brass section and they’re really bouncy and fun. “We had toyed with the idea of doin’ the support ourselves, but, we saw Jungle Lion in the summer at Tramlines and thought, you know what, they were really good and we thought that would save us a job. That’ll be a good start to the show.” Regular attendees will know that the Brothers have introduced their fair share of guests over the years, particularly for an encore of The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York, which Shaun claims is the ‘best Christmas song ever done’. Duetting with him this year, and following in the footsteps of the likes of Polly from Man Bites Fridge, Niamh from Carmen Ghia and the Hot Rods and Rebecca from Slow Club, will be Sheffield singer-songwriter Sarah Mac. “We always finish with Fairytale of New York ‘cause it sums up Christmas and it’s everyone’s favourite,” adds Shaun. “We’ve always done that and had various people who have come and sung it. That’s just the best way to finish off a Christmas show.” There’ll be another special guest too, although Shaun is reluctant to say who, but let’s just say he’s already feeling the heat. “I’ve still got to write some words for it. Pressure’s on as we’ve only got one rehearsal.” No doubt he’ll come up trumps. The last time I spoke to Shaun he was gearing up for a headlining gig at Magna with one of his idols, Tony Christie. Despite the date clashing with Sheffield Wednesday’s appearance
in the Championship play-off final, the band still managed to draw quite the crowd – with some fans even turning up straight from Wembley. But it was Mr Christie who left a lasting impression on the Everly Pregnant Brothers. “He is what you call an old school performer,” explains Shaun. “He’s incredibly professional. His voice is amazing, considering how old he is, he’s one of these that can project, he’s not got the microphone stuck right into his face… it’s proper belting out. “I tried it when we were on stage but I could get nowhere near, and you know what a big gob I’ve got. He’s really polite and down to earth, he’s a gentleman and he is that kind of sophisticated old school entertainer and his band, they were really tight. “He came backstage afterwards, had a good chat, had his photo took, he couldn’t have been nicer. He’s not a wild man, he’s not a rock and roller but he’s great to be around and you can learn a lot from him.” Another big influence on the band has been the addition of Johnny and Nick [Banks, former Pulp drummer], as Shaun explains: “They’ve brought more control to it so musically we’ve improved. Whereas before, when it were just us, half of the show was about us not being very good musically or making mistakes. Now were getting better and better and more accomplished. Everyone’s trying to raise their game a bit.” Busy schedules meant that gigs have been scarce throughout the rest of the year – fleeting festival appearances aside – and the band are itching to get back on stage and record new material. This will be their first Christmas gig in a while where there won’t be a new CD on sale but Shaun promises that one will be coming in the new year. “I think we’ve got enough songs to do one, some are still in progress as we speak. It’ll probably after Christmas.”

One song that has captured the imagination just recently is ‘Chip Pan’s on Fire’, which was adopted by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue for a promotional video they were showing at an open day in November. The band headed down to the central fire station one Sunday afternoon to shoot the promo and even roped in a few firemen as extras. “They all got involved,” explains Shaun. “I honestly think Pete [McKee] had the best day of his life, ever. If it gets the message across by making people laugh, then great.” But while making people laugh through music is be one thing, getting up on stage at the Lescar is a totally different prospect, as Shaun discovered earlier this year. “Oh my god, that were just terrifying, it scared the crap out of me. When you’re with the band, you’ve got seven lads behind you and a song on in the next ten seconds if you’re losing it, when you’re up on stage on your own, and you look out, all of a sudden there’s no back-up, it’s just you.” Not that it’s put him off though. “I think because of my nerves I just rushed and all my material that I’d come up with I tried to cram in the first five minutes rather than trying to spread it out. I wanted every line to be a gag but you just can’t. “That made me realise I wanted to go away, write some more stuff and then build it up gently. I will be coming back at some point, probably at the Lescar, maybe just MC-ing, just to get used to that idea of being on stage.” Stand-up is one of a myriad of things keeping Shaun occupied at the minute – he’s a man that likes to keep busy. On the horizon for 2017 is the launch of his own YouTube channel (“I’ve seen people like the Artist Taxi Driver and Jonathan Pie, it’s kind of like what I do on Facebook and I thought, ‘I can do that’.”) and a photo project, currently (loosely) entitled, Unknown Sheffield. “What I want to do is a photo thing of a Sheffield that you wouldn’t necesarily go to, parts that people might not even know are there. Little back streets, little green spaces, little parks, old industrial bits that have been changed into summat else. It’s all going to be black and white. I like the idea of making it look old.” And when Shaun says he’s going to do something, in his words, he always follows through.
Last but not least on Shaun’s agenda is a reunion of sorts for a special – and at the moment secret – gig at the Leadmill in April next year. “It’s going to be a load of my favourite songs with Toby Foster and the Beat Street Band,” reveals Shaun. “Some will be my favourite songs to sing but some will be just favourites, it’ll be a pretty diverse selection. Most will be like indie and rock, and pop, but you can expect to hear at least a Specials song, a Madness song, probably a Jam song, there’ll almost certainly be She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult because that’s one of my favourite songs of all time. “If we can pull it off, I’m gonna try and play Camouflage by Stan Ridgway because that is my all-time favourite song. It’s not a trendy song, it’s not a cool song but it’s my favourite. I were 17 when it came out in ’87. I remember ‘cause I were in sixth form and after school I used to work as a cleaner at Crosby Kitchens in Handsworth. They used to have Radio Hallam on while we were working. I heard it every day five days a week all through the summer. I loved it, it’s just one of them songs that grabbed me.” With such a hectic schedule, surely there’s no time for new year’s resolutions? “I’ve got two. One, is to complete all the projects and tasks that I’ve set myself. My second new year’s resolution is to get back in the gym, get back on the bike and get back to the weight I was in 2011. “I looked at some photos the other day and I look completely different. I’d been really good as I’d been diagnosed the year before with diabetes so for that following year I’d been really strict and lost 6 stone. I want to get back to that; I know it’s doable because I’ve done it before but it’s just having that motivation.” Somehow, I don’t think that will be a problem.

Can you feed the family for £25 this Christmas? Bargainhunter Rachel Martin headed to the Moor Market to find out. THE average person will spend a whopping £178.78 on food and groceries on Christmas Day alone, but if you’re feeling a bit strapped for cash this Christmas, fear not. After the success of our recent £20 weekly shop challenge, we headed back to the Moor Market to see if she could whip up a festive feast for four for just £25. A whole turkey was not the way to go here, not only because of the budget, but also because an entire bird just doesn’t make sense for a group of four. So I settled on a roasting chicken (£4.50) instead. For those looking to splash out on a grandiose bird, though, you’ll be able to pick up various turkey cuts for as little as £6.48 per kg from 5 December. Next up, I knew I’d have to tackle one food I’ve always kept at a distance: stuffing. Although I love the stuff (heh), I’ve never made it for various reasons. Call it self-protection, if you will. So instead I opted for a box of Paxo’s sage and onion stuffing mix (65p) and picked up a handful of roasted chestnuts. Cranberry sauce was another easy one I had in the bag; I picked a jar of Catherine’s Choice Cranberry and Port sauce from S&Js Pantry, giving me an excuse to not have to attempt to make my own, while also supporting local vendors at the same time. The bird may take centre stage at most dinner tables, but many people like more than one meat. So, if you’re partial, as I am, to pork belly or a few pigs in blankets then you might want to check out Mick’s Grade A Meats and Waterall Brothers Ltd – they’ll even prepare your chipolatas before the big day.
It’s not a Christmas dinner without plenty of sides (mash, roasties, veg) and there’s an abundance of places across the market where you can buy potatoes and vegetables, all grown on local soil. So, I went with a riff on carrots, sprouts, parsnips and baking potatoes, and, as it’s so important to get roast potatoes right, I picked up a jar of goose fat (£2) to ensure crunchy, fluffy, spot-on spuds. For the sake of time, Christmas pudding wasn’t going to work, so I went with a walnut topped fruit cake (£2) and mince pies (£2), and, although I had spent almost all of my budget by this point, to me you can’t have Christmas dinner without alcohol. If beer is your festive drink of choice, then Beer Central will have the drink for you. I picked up a bottle of Santa’s Tipple (£2.70), a warming winter beer with chocolate, orange and star anise, brought to you by The Great Yorkshire Brewery, which is perfect for washing down your festive spread or accompanying a mince pie on the mantelpiece, ready for a visit from the big man himself. With a pass on wine (I thought this was reasonable, considering most guests prefer not to show up empty-handed) and a few pantry staples like salt, pepper, gravy and basic spices, I definitely suggest avoiding the supermarket queues this year and buying your Christmas dinner ingredients from the Moor Market. I even managed to spend that leftover £1.06 and spruced up the table with a box of festive crackers.

When Rachel Salway witnessed suffering in developing countries, she knew she had to help. Hi Rachel, can you explain how Roseannah first started?
In 2007 I went on trips to India and Africa and was traumatised by what I saw. When you see it on TV you become desensitised to it but when you’re there the smell is something else. There are kids running around in rags on litter, it’s heart-breaking. They were dying of sickness and diarrhoea, they’re so helpless. I knew there was something I needed to do. I come from a business management background so wanted to focus on giving people trade, not aid. I began to work with organisations that empowered workers, farmers and victims of human trafficking.

What does Roseannah sell?
Roseannah is a social impact company, driven by style. We sell clothing, accessories such as hand-woven scarves and jewellery; each product has its own story. At first it was quite hard to get trendy stuff, because of the difference in style between the UK and the countries we were working in. I’ve always wanted our products to be on trend and fashionable. We also sell Stop the Traffick bracelets – which are charm bracelets similar to Pandora. Each charity that helps the victims of trafficking has its own colour charm, and £5 from each sale is donated to that particular charity.
No, not at all. Before the Rotherham child sex exploitation scandal came out I had not really thought about this happening on my doorstep, but then I knew I needed to do something. There was no reason why I couldn’t help local people too. In the UK, we help by providing people with education, training, jobs and work experience. What we have been working on the most is mentoring for asylum seekers, you watch people go from being scared and timid to really coming out of their shell and gaining confidence. Roseannah is open 10am-6pm every day but Thursday, when it is open until 7pm as part of the Alive After Five campaign.
