In our 75th anniversary year, we’re constantly looking for new ways for audiences to discover the thrill of world-class arts and culture.
This month we’re reimagining the live classical music experience with Classical Mixtape: A Live Takeover, which, for the first time ever, brings all of our six Resident Orchestras together to create a one-off musical takeover of our site. You choose the soundtrack to your evening as you explore 200 musicians performing different
sets on multiple stages.
Our much-loved family festival, Imagine, returns over half-term, with plenty of free events throughout the festival. A place for children and their families to get inspired by the arts together, Imagine takes in performance, dance, music, literature, circus, a sleepover in our Royal Festival Hall and for the first time gaming, as we extend the Imagine experience into Roblox.
Solo exhibitions from globally celebrated artists Chiharu Shiota and Yin Xiuzhen open in the Hayward Gallery this month. The largescale immersive works of both artists interact with the gallery’s unmistakable architecture, inviting us into two distinct creative worlds that reflect on our shared human experiences.
Mark Ball
Artistic Director, Southbank Centre

Wed 11 – Sat 21 Feb
Our joyous family festival returns for February half-term, bringing tons of inspirational events and creative activities to enjoy together
Gather round – it’s time for Imagine! Our family festival of fun and creativity is back, full of fantastic performances and interactive activities, including lots of free events, to explore creativity and spark imaginations. On every day
Colours, shapes and inventive play come together at REPLAY, our recycled playground. Take part in free self-led activities throughout the festival: pick up a piece of chalk and let the creativity flow at our Giant Chalkboard in the Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer, or grab a map and follow our interactive Architecture Explorers: Family Trail, which this year highlights the hidden details of our site.
For the little ones
Under-fives will find plenty to delight. Enter an awe-inspiring world of dance at Fields of Tender, with sessions available for older disabled and neurodivergent children, while spellbinding dance theatre show Early Weaves combines sound and movement. Throw some shapes at dance parties Wonder Gig and Toasty Tots, get comfy for live music at WordPlay and wind down with Slumber Stories Installation’s calming tales, music and light projections.
Find books brought to life at events featuring beloved authors and brand-new tales. Spend an afternoon with Liz Pichon, creator of the Tom Gates series, join an interactive session with author-illustrator RAMZEE, celebrate difference with George Webster, step into a fairy tale with a twist at Once Upon a Remix: Meet Goldilocs! and enter the fun-filled world of Lottie Brooks with author Katie Kirby. And Jacqueline Wilson talks about her Sleepovers series ahead of a real-life sleepover in our Royal Festival Hall, with activities galore!
Musical magic
Ready for some tunes? Party on at Mini SPIN, a joyful immersive dance performance and interactive rave, and at Lip Sync Brawl, where the energy of a rock concert meets the theatrics of a drag show. Bring your air guitar to Robert Tregoning: The Rock Family Band, go exploring with Aurora Orchestra players at Mahler and the Mountain Adventure, and join CBeebies to celebrate the natural world in music and song at a Wildlife Jamboree
Much-loved CBBC shows join in the fun: Andy and The Odd Socks bring bags of music and
mayhem, and in Horrible Histories: The Concert your favourite songs and actors from the TV series appear live (and dead!) on stage.
Dance, puppets, comedy – and acrobatics! That’s not all for on-stage antics. See friendship blossom in funny and tender dance performance The Show for Young Men, find acrobatics, clowning and fairy tale adventure at The Princess and the Pea, and laugh yourself silly at Big Laughs for Little Bellies. A brandnew musical adaptation of the BBC animated series, Quentin Blake's Mrs Armitage on Wheels, features puppetry and live music.
The Imagine party doesn’t stop there! With theatre, comedy, music, dance, poetry and non-stop fun, there’s something for everyone, including plenty of free events and activities for a fantastic family day out.

Tuesday 17 February – Sunday 3 May
Join us at the very first event of our new quarterly series celebrating the bold and vital work of independent presses and the authors they publish, hosted by authors Okechukwu Nzelu and Eliza Clark.
Each event showcases a hand-picked mix of four authors – fiction and non-fiction, established names and emerging voices – united by the same independent spirit as their publishers. This month’s edition features readings and discussion from Deepa Anappara, Khairani Barokka, Vigdis Hjorth and Tim MacGabhann, with an introduction to the event from Max Porter.
Known for taking creative risks and championing fresh perspectives, independent presses bring vital, boundary-pushing books into the world – works that often wouldn’t find space in the mainstream.

For a special outing, look no further than Skylon, which brings together modern British food with modernist British architecture.
Located on Level 3 of the Royal Festival Hall, Skylon has floor-to-ceiling windows with a view of the London skyline that’s something to write home about. The contemporary design of the interior, with its soft lighting and elegant central bar, works in harmony with Skylon’s iconic location to make this a top spot for pre- or post-show drinks and dining.
Start with a flute of fizz or choose a glass from the carefully curated wine list. Sit at the bar to watch the experts mix up a cocktail from the signature
selection, ranging from long and zesty to short and smoky, with mocktail drinkers well catered for.
The menu is bursting with flavoursome dishes that use seasonal ingredients – think fresh fish, hearty pies and sharing cuts on the grill – via a tempting selection of starters like crispy duck salad and twicebaked cheese soufflé. All excellent reasons to pair a visit to one of our events with a meal or drinks at Skylon and make a real occasion of it.
