BELIEVE t WestJet, we are committed to making breast cancer beatable. Breast cancer remains the leading cancer among Canadian women, with one in eight expected to develop breast cancer in her lifetime. On average, more than 70 Canadians will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day. This month, WestJet is dedicated to raising funds and awareness to help create a future without breast cancer. For the seventh consecutive year, WestJet is proud to be the official airline partner of the Canadian Cancer Society and their CIBC Run for the Cure. And, we’re proud to do it again this month as thousands of WestJetters and their families and friends take part in the run in communities across Canada. the Canadian Cancer Society. In the past six years, WestJet and WestJetters have raised more than $500,000 for the breast cancer cause. I am proud of our caring WestJetters who rally to participate and raise funds for such an important cause. In the Fly section of this month’s WestJet Magazine, two WestJetters who have been personally affected by breast cancer share their thoughts and feelings about why they choose to wear pink in October. I hope you’ll take a moment to read their stories. On a personal note, sadly, I have lost many of my immediate family members to this terrible disease—and at far too young an age. I am wearing pink in memory of them and as a tribute to all those whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. We believe there is a future without breast cancer. Thank you in advance for your support. Onward and upward!

WHAT I LOVED
WE’RE EXCITED FOR EVERYTHING IN THIS ISSUE, BUT HERE’S WHAT STOOD OUT FOR MANAGING EDITOR DIANE BOLT.

love nothing more than sitting in a busy city café sipping coffee and later enjoying some boutique shopping and museum-cruising while navigating the bustle of urban life. I also delight in the stillness of the boonies, laying beneath a star-filled sky, staring up in awe and straining my ears for the slightest sound. And, I treasure time spent lounging on a beach cycling between reading a book and taking cooling dips in the ocean. As travel options go, I’ll take them all, which is why I’m so excited about this issue’s features that explore a city, a wilderness and a tropical escape. Having grown up in London, I’m drawn to the buzz of the city, and The Bristol Experience (page 38) has inspired me to take a trip to this happy place the next time I’m home. I’m looking forward to an up-close look at the architecture, exploring the dining scene and popping into the independent stores, but I’m also excited to mingle with the locals, many of whom appear to be the reason for this city’s affable accolades. Starry Nights (page 31) brings out the explorer in me. I’ve visited Jasper National
I
Park so I have first-hand experience of the wonder of a truly dark sky, but I’m intrigued to hit up some of North America’s other dark-sky spots. And, as we head into the cooler months, my mind naturally drifts to sandy beaches and oceans views and Your Island Escape (page 55), which matches four idyllic islands with four vacation styles, will make planning a winter getaway a breeze. Whatever style of traveller you are, I hope this issue will help to inspire your next trip.

or the last 14 years, Jessica “Jess” Allen, correspondent on CTV’s The Social, has lived in Roncesvalles Village. Located in Toronto’s west end, it is the heart of the city’s Polish community. Allen loves the European feel of the area, which is full of small grocers and specialty food stores. “I’ll be on the way home and think, ‘Oh, this is what we’re going to have for dinner,’ and everything is literally at the end of the street.” She singles out Alimentari Italian Grocery (325 Roncesvalles Ave.) for its fresh pasta and porchetta sandwiches. When Allen feels like dining out, she and partner Simon head to family-run Café Polonez (195 Roncesvalles Ave.). “We get the Hungarian [potato] pancakes. They could easily feed a family of four, but we order one each.” When she and Simon want to “do it up nice,” the couple dines on Mediterranean-style plates at Brothers Food & Wine (1240 Bay St.). “You feel like you’re in really good hands,” she says. "You don’t have to make too many decisions, which is nice when you go out.” One place Allen really loves is Mattachioni (1617 Dupont St.), run by David Mattachioni, who used to work at popular Toronto restaurant chain Terroni. “His pizzas are so delicious. You always see neighbourhood people going in with their kids or getting takeout. It’s a hidden gem.” When it comes to play dates with her nephew, Allen likes to visit Grange Park, located behind the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). “They have a little splash pad, a view of the gorgeous AGO building, and now they have moved the Henry Moore sculpture Large Two Forms there. It’s pretty charming.” For a bit of shopping, Allen likes to visit In Vintage We Trust (1580 Queen St. W.), which specializes in clothing from the last century. “The guy who runs it is an encyclopedia on the history of everything from L.L. Bean and Ralph Lauren to military wear and Nike,’” she says. “He will talk to you for an hour about where the buttons came from. It’s a wonderful experience.” —Richard Crouse

People who are lonely may look at [travelling] as an opportunity to change their behaviours. How should a person approach the idea of travelling solo? One way is to see travelling as [an opportunity for] solitude, wanting to be alone, which is actually recharging and nourishing. Some people grow up knowing how to do that, but, for some people, every time they experience aloneness, they experience loneliness.

What are the symptoms? Loneliness is known to cause people to view themselves negatively. It affects our spirit and our health. Stress—and loneliness causes stress—is known to cause sleep disturbances and to elevate heart rate, blood pressure and
Q
Is someone who is travelling for work at an increased risk of experiencing loneliness? If those people are leaving their family behind, feeling lonely or yearning for the people they left behind is actually a good thing. It’s much better to miss the people you love, than be happy that you’ve left them.
Q
Is there a fact about loneliness that people may find surprising? I once read a sentence that I really liked: “Don’t let the things that you cannot do prevent you from doing those that you can.” If you don’t want to be lonely, it may take some work and guidance, but you can change it. —Sam Gryba

handful of studies conducted during the last few years have found that loneliness, while certainly not a new concern, is on the rise. One study that surveyed more than 20,000 U.S. adults, revealed that nearly half reported feelings of loneliness. While there is a distinct difference between loneliness and being alone, as more people are spending time alone, it’s not surprising they are also vacationing on their own. Many solo travellers are embracing the various benefits of these journeys, such as the opportunity to increase their confidence, dive into new experiences, expand social networks and improve decision-making skills. In response, many resorts and hotels have begun to implement strategies, programming and events that are designed to not only welcome solo explorers but also combat loneliness, such as shared co-working spaces and special sightseeing and adventure tours. Set your pacemaker “Your body tracks time using an internal pacemaker,” says Klerman, who works in the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass. “The body clock sets itself to approximately 24 hours. If you fly to a different time zone, you need to [reset] your body clock to local time.” She says your body uses light—not the actual time on a clock—to do that. As a member of the International Space Station Flexible Lighting Team, Klerman helped develop an LED lighting system for the space station to help astronauts improve their sleep, since different frequencies of light have different effects on our body clock.
OCTOBER 2019 | WESTJETMAGAZINE.COM
Blue-green light Multiple researchers have found that blue-green light is most effective at switching the body’s pacemaker, while red light is not as efficient. The International Space Station Flexible Lighting Team created a system that adjusts the colour depending on whether astronauts want to be alert or sleepy. Airlines have considered adopting a similar lighting system on planes, but, because passengers may start and finish their journeys in different time zones, a plane-wide system could worsen jet lag for some. Instead, each guest should use light—from outside, from their hotel room or from a phone app— to train their body clock to the new time zone, Klerman says.
Direction mat ters Klerman says it’s easier to adjust to east-to-west travel because light’s effect depends on when we see it. Until about 1 or 2 a.m., the body clock interprets light as belonging to the present day, while, starting around 4 a.m., it interprets light as signalling a new day. If you leave Toronto at 6 p.m. and arrive in London at 6 a.m., it is still 1 a.m. in Toronto. Your body sees the morning London light and thinks it must still be the same day. To overcome this, fly as late as possible, shift your sleep and light schedules to European time a few days before your trip, and try to sleep as soon as you board your flight. When you arrive, try to stay awake as long as possible. —Scott McKinney

hen you are an astronaut onboard the International Space Station, you get to experience a sunrise every 90 minutes. It’s a memorable sight, but it can also be one of many factors— including motion sickness and zero-gravity conditions—playing havoc with your sleeping patterns. Ensuring astronauts get quality rest is a challenge for NASA, since, for some, poor sleep can worsen performance and increase mistakes. That’s why NASA works with researchers associated with Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine, including Dr. Elizabeth Klerman, to offer some insight into sleep. Turns out, their research can also help us here on Earth when it comes to learning how to avoid jet lag while travelling.

STARRY NIGHTS Nuits étoilées BY | PA R D E A N L I S K

Peering through time OBSERVER LA LUMIÈRE DU TEMPS
LAKE ANNETTE/LAC ANNETTE
B
undled up against the chill of the October night, I stop at the stout, barrel-shaped telescope set up near the shore of Lake Annette, just across the Athabasca River from the town of Jasper, Alta. The scientific-grade telescope is trained on the constellation Draco, and, peering into the eyepiece, I see a slash of light near the bottom of the frame. It’s NGC 5866, the Spindle Galaxy, which, the volunteer manning the telescope explains, at nearly 50 million light years is likely the farthest object I will see tonight. The eight or so telescopes set up along the shore of the lake, each focused on a different corner of space, are part of the Jasper Dark Sky Festival. Taking place in Jasper National Park each October, the festival celebrates astronomy and space. Canada is home to 13 places, including Jasper, that have been designated Dark-Sky Preserves by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) or
Dark Sky Parks by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). In these parks and preserves, steps have been taken, such as limiting light sources and using special light bulbs that minimize glare, to ensure light pollution doesn’t have a negative impact on animals that may be active during the night. It’s the ability to come to the park and enjoy the night sky in all its glory that Jasper is celebrating. During the festival, there are panel discussions and guest talks about space, seminars on how to photograph the night sky, musical performances and art exhibits. This year’s festival, which takes place Oct. 18 to 27, will feature astronaut Robert Thirsk, who will share some of his experiences from his two space missions; Nick Pope, who used to run the British Government’s UFO project; and former Daily Planet host Jay Ingram. But it’s at night when the purpose of the festival comes into focus. After the sun sets
behind the mountains, leaving just a dusty purple outline against a star-filled sky, people begin to arrive at Lake Annette. Groups follow Parks Canada interpreters around the lake to learn about the importance of dark-sky conservation, while others gather around a fire listening to a musician and storyteller share Indigenous legends about the night sky. Lines quickly form around the telescopes set up by the Edmonton chapter of the RASC, as people wait for their turn to look at planets, stars and far-off galaxies, including the Spindle. As I peer through the eyepiece of the telescope, a volunteer explains that what I am seeing actually happened 50 million years ago; it has taken that much time for the Spindle’s light to reach the Earth. The stars as we see them in the night sky now, existed in the past. So those twinkling stars I was admiring moments earlier may no longer be there. It’s an intriguing thought.

Touted as the happiest place in Britain, one of the most inspiring cities in the world, and mostrecently named the kindest city in the United Kingdom, Bristol’s list of accolades are seemingly endless. With so many singing the praises of this southwest-England sweetheart, visitors often arrive with high expectations and, rest assured, they are not leaving disappointed.
Heureusement, ils ne repartent pas déçus. pend a few days in Bristol—taking in the views of its iconic suspension bridge, dining in the cafés of wellheeled Clifton Village, hunting down Banksy street art in the Stokes Croft neighbourhood and wandering the shoreline of the 210-year-old floating harbour—and you’ll encounter a city with an infectiously positive vibe, and an endearing, stubbornly individualistic personality. “In Bristol, there is strong community support for local independent businesses—it’s such a friendly city,” says Sinéad Sweeney, owner of Bristol Trading Post. “It’s so vibrant and diverse, and there is so much going on!” Originally from Manchester and having studied in Dublin, Sweeney says she found her home when she arrived in Bristol a few years ago. Her shop, an array of art, textiles and jewelry, sits inside the Clifton Arcade alongside a mishmash of independent art galleries, cafés and florists. A few doors down, an independent grocery store heaves with customers: Reg the Veg is a Clifton institution that dates back to the 1960s and, while Reg no longer runs it himself, it remains a family business helmed by father-and-son duo John and Thomas Hagon and Thomas’ partner, Bess Swingler. Clifton is “the jewel in Bristol’s crown,” says Delphine Horsley, owner of Portabella, a colourful Italian clothing boutique in Clifton Village. “This is where Bristolians come to be tourists,” she says. “They come for the views, the cafés and the bridge.” The bridge Horsley is referring to is the impressive, 155-year-old Clifton Suspension Bridge that spans the Avon Gorge and the River Avon. It was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of the world’s most influential engineers. Clifton’s streets are lined with Georgian townhouses, and there’s hardly a chain store in sight. But it’s not just this neighbourhood that thrives with boutiques, restaurants and even a Victoria-era heated lido (an outdoor swimming pool), the whole of Bristol is littered with creative people converting their passions into

viable businesses. On the Christmas Steps, the name of a street and its atmospheric set of wonky stone stairs in the city centre, board game café Chance & Counters has seen exceptional success. “It’s a testament to Bristol and how people here are willing to try anything,” says Dicky Duerden, the café’s wonderfully titled Head of Games. “You could open up your own artisan knot-makers, and people would go, ‘Sure, I’ll give it a shot, absolutely.’” The café, which started with just 250 games and a single location, now has an outpost in Cardiff, Wales, with another opening in Birmingham, and there are more than 900 games on the shelves in its Bristol shop, alone. They’re booked-up most nights, Duerden says, so it’s best to reserve at least a week in advance to get a spot. For intriguing tipples, locals head to Weber & Tring’s— also on the Christmas Steps—where French-born owner Sarah Tring runs blend-your-own-gin classes and has a leafy garden, the perfect spot for sipping, out back. Or, for craft beers, try Left Handed Giant Brewpub, on the water in Finzels Reach, which was launched thanks to funding donations from hundreds of locals and investors. Within weeks of opening, the pub was overrun with customers and the owners had to adjust distribution in order to ensure supply. For food, Bristolians flock to establishments such as Bravas in Cotham, where the authentic tapas menu is inspired by the travels of its owners, Kieran and Imogen Waite. There’s a queue for dinner most nights, Kieran says, but it’s okay because, just down the hill, Pasta Loco is serving equally exciting European fare. You can find Middle Eastern feasts in Bambalan, right in the town centre—best enjoyed after a tense game of ping pong on its terrace—and refreshing, healthy bowls of salad, stew and curry at Bowl of Plenty. The one thing all these places have in common is they’re independent and owned by inventive locals.

But this city is not just in love with its indie traders. Independence is a huge part of Bristol’s identity. It was, rather defiantly, on a different time zone to London right up until the mid-1800s. Bristol was once a whole 10 minutes behind the capital. It made train travel between the two cities an often-confusing affair. When Brunel’s Great Western Railway was established to link London to the ships setting sail for New York City from Bristol’s docks, the city was forced to fall in line. A nod to its resistance can be seen on the clock face of the Corn Exchange near St Nicholas Market, where a red minute hand shows the current Greenwich Mean Time and a black minute hand keeps historic Bristol Time. To delve deeper into the ambitious mind of Brunel, spend a day on the SS Great Britain. Docked at Spike Island, in the middle of the harbour, this impressive passenger steamship has been turned into an interactive museum where you can see how passengers slept, where the crew cooked luxurious banquets, and even witness the enormous cogs turning inside the engine room. Designed by Brunel and launched in 1843, the ship was incredibly advanced for her time, especially considering her size and power—at more than 320 feet long, she had a 12-knot, 1,000-horsepower engine. The Being Brunel exhibition next to the ship offers intriguing insights into the engineer’s wild aspirations and obsessive nature. It’s easy to understand how Bristol today has been influenced by his sheer ambition. Nearby, the city’s disobedient edge is also evident in the displays at the M Shed museum on the recently redeveloped Wapping Wharf. Head to the first floor, and you’ll

find an exhibition that details some of the city’s most rebellious moments, including photos of workers’ union protests and stories about Bristol’s own Occupy demonstrations—part of the worldwide movement highlighting social and economic inequality. With a strong history of defying central powers and a population unafraid of speaking its mind, it’s hardly surprising that Bristol birthed one of the world’s most famous street artists: Banksy. World-renowned for his social and political commentary through original stencil art, this anonymous artist has made the most significant impact here in Bristol. The Mild Mild West, Rose Trap and Girl with The Pierced Eardrum are just a few of his works that can be found scattered across the city. These pieces have inspired hundreds of young artists to take to the city’s walls with spray cans and stencils. In recent years, artists and the city council have been working together to map out a network of designated walls on which graffiti can be legally created, and street art is now celebrated throughout the city centre almost every year during Upfest, billed as Europe’s biggest street art festival. “One of the things I say to young people,” says Rob Dean, an artist and musician who has spent years documenting the murals found across the city on his Where The Wall street art tours, “is that no matter what you want to achieve, no matter how far-fetched it seems, Banksy proves with hard work and determination, anything is possible.” It seems that, with such a thriving food, culture and arts scene, the city’s locals are standing by that message, making Bristol a truly compelling place to explore.

L’expo Being Brunel à

TRADITIONAL SEAFOOD AND MODERN CANTONESE CUISINE BLUE CANOE WATERFRONT RESTAURANT Go for the sunset views over the water, but stay for the savoury seafood dishes prepared using freshly caught fish (the Pan-Seared Arctic Char is a must). Whether you prefer your seafood grilled, roasted or steamed, Chef Dimitrios Papafilis creates palate-pleasing dishes that complement the restaurant’s surroundings on the Bayview Pier in historic Steveston Village. Score a spot on “the Canoe’s” patio and watch local fishermen and visitors passing by on the adjacent boardwalk as you dine.
3 DRINK STOPS
From craft brews to classic Canadian cocktails and even non-alcoholic drinks, Richmond offers plenty of options for every type of sipper.
HK BBQ MASTER As its name implies, the barbecue dishes at this hole-in-the-wall Cantonese restaurant are a meat-lovers’ dream. With limited take-out and dine-in menus, the dishes reflect decades of barbecue mastery by Eric Leung, the “master” and owner behind this award-winning spot. The meats used are all locally sourced and have been marinated, slow-cooked and then charred to perfection. Popular dishes include the Char Siu (Chinese BBQ pork), Crispy Pork, Charred Duck and Soy Chicken. Items sell out fast, so go early to avoid disappointment.
LUNCH For a laid-back experience, try the Smokehouse Sandwich Co. on Westminster Highway, and sink your teeth into pulled tamarind chicken or coffee-rubbed and strawberry-glazed brisket.
DINNER At Richmond’s only French fine-dining restaurant, the Origo Club, enjoy giant tiger prawns in garlic butter, strip-loin peppercorn steak with shoestring fries, and chocolate cake with a passionfruit dark chocolate ganache.
Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks This craft-beer spot likes to add interesting flavours to its brews. Try the Strawberry Wit, a Belgian white beer made with strawberries; The Gin & Lime Pilsner, a refreshing summer sipper; or the Sakari Guava Sour, a tart beer topped with the sweetness of fresh guavas.
Sweet spots TASTY TREATS AND BUBBLE TEA Head to L’Opera Patisserie for afternoon high tea, and indulge in tasty French pastries such as Banana Mille Feuille or decadent macarons. For bubble tea or over-the-top bubble waffle parfaits, The Bubble Tea Shop offers uniquely spectacular sweets in a cup. Chocolate lovers should beeline to Wild Sweets, an award-winning chocolate-maker that offers a Meet the Makers experience where crafted chocolate confections are paired with beer, wine or spirits. —Bianca Bujan
Jetside Bar at Fairmont Vancouver Airport Fairmont Vancouver Airport’s Jetside Bar is famous for its contemporary cocktail list and is the perfect place to enjoy a Smoke & Barrel Old Fashioned. This cosy spot also overlooks the airport runways and the North Shore Mountains.
Yuan Chen Premium Tea For a non-alcoholic post-dinner drink, head to this high-end tea shop and sip on a cup of Pu’erh tea, sourced directly from the MengKu region in China. Book a tea tasting to learn about the authentic techniques used to create this warm drink that is steeped in history.

F|E|A|S|T When did you decide that you wanted to be a chef? As a child, I wanted to become a cabinetmaker, but I eventually opted for hotelier school, where I discovered cuisine. I found the chef profession could be related to moulding materials into products. Take a vegetable for example: it can be peeled, cut, cooked, seasoned. It is not very different from the work of a cabinetmaker with wood.

Frédéric Anton Creating culinary dreams atop the Eiffel Tower. ith the help of an electric scooter, award-winning chef Frédéric Anton divides his day between two Parisian eateries: the Le Pré Catelan restaurant in the heart of the Bois de Boulogne neighbourhood, and Le Jules Verne located inside the Eiffel Tower. While Le Jules Verne has been operating for more than two decades, it recently underwent a 10-month refurbishment. It now features chic decor that complements its panoramic views of the City of Lights. After arriving at the iconic tower, guests are whisked to the restaurant in a private elevator. At the summit, a magical dining experience awaits.

Dressing up is recommended and, after dark, the twinkling lights of the skyline offer an unparalleled opportunity for romance. Anton, a former judge on the French version of MasterChef and the holder of three Michelin stars, is leading the restaurant’s new vision. His menus include everything from smoked caviar to apricots flavoured with almond cream. There are two tasting menus, with five and seven courses respectively, plus an à la carte lunch menu. Each menu is accented with the unusual, down to the smallest detail—think courgette flowers and Madagascan vanilla. If you’re looking for a once-in-alifetime dining experience in Paris, your search is over.

Do you have any advice to pass on to young chefs? Mentoring is a very important aspect of our business. I’ve had the chance to learn alongside great names in French gastronomy, like Joël Robuchon [at Café Jamin]. It is important for me to continue this tradition. Because we are passionate, the main tip—for young and old, alike—is simply to have fun.

What can Le Jules Verne guests expect when they visit? Our ambition is to make Le Jules Verne a must-visit gourmet destination in Paris, and to offer the client an exceptional experience at the top of France’s most emblematic monument.

What are your career highlights? I took my first steps with great chefs: Gérard Veissière at Le Capucin Gourmand in Nancy, Robert Bardot at the Le Flambard in Lille and Gérard Boyer at Les Crayères in Reims. Then I worked at Café Jamin in Paris. In 1997, I became a director at Le Pré Catelan, which then had one star in the Michelin Guide. Thanks to a lot of work, we got the second star in 1999, and the third in 2007.

1
In a large saucepan, bring the cranberries, sugar and one cup of water to a simmer and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the berries burst and the sauce thickens. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator until it cools.
Tip: Fresh cranberries are incredibly dense—once they are frozen and then thawed, they break down significantly, making them more malleable.

2
Preheat the oven to 375˚F. Line a pie plate with the pastry, crimping the edges. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese with 1/2 cup of the cranberry sauce; spread over the bottom of the pastry shell. Combine the rest of the sauce with the brown sugar, cornstarch and salt. Carefully spread it over the cheese layer. Bake for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, combine the flour, brown sugar, butter and almonds for the topping. Blend until it is well-combined and crumbly.
3
Sprinkle the crumble over the pie and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, or until the middle of the pie is set—the whole thing should jiggle slightly. You can serve the pie while it is still warm, or refrigerate it and serve chilled.
Tip: In a hurry? To streamline this pie recipe, start with three cups of canned whole-berry cranberry sauce instead of the fresh or frozen varieties.

It’s a natural fit for the town, which is close to Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh. The Johnston family has been growing cranberries since 1950, and this pie, adapted from Better Homes & Gardens Five Seasons Cranberry Book, is the family’s go-to dessert. —Julie Van Rosendaal

Changing the future of breast cancer.
Changer l’avenir du cancer du sein.
October is about more than raising awareness of breast cancer. It’s about joining a collective of Canadians who are proving that life is bigger than breast cancer. As the official airline partner of the Canadian Cancer Society and their CIBC Run for the Cure, WestJet and WestJetters are committed to making breast cancer beatable. Lacing up and coming together to participate in the CIBC Run for the Cure is just one of the ways WestJetters across the country are building on our six-year legacy of raising more than $500,000 for a future without breast cancer.

Forces for life in the face of breast cancer.
T
hroughout the month of October, WestJetters are invited to be a force for life in the face of breast cancer by purchasing and wearing custom-designed pink neckwear, hats, pins and aprons. One hundred per cent of the sale price of these items are donated to the Canadian Cancer Society to support its breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. Here, we introduce two WestJetters who have been impacted by breast cancer and learn why they inspire us to wear pink and raise funds to make breast cancer beatable.
Mian
Stephanie
How have you been impacted by breast cancer? It was May last year when I was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ. Nothing can ever prepare you for a breast cancer diagnosis—nothing! According to my oncologist, had I ignored the signs and waited two more months, it would have already invaded. Like many cancer survivors, the first question that popped in my head was, ‘How did I get it? I run marathons.’ Now I know, cancer doesn’t discriminate.
How have you been impacted by breast cancer? In my mid-thirties, breast cancer was not even on my radar. The positive diagnosis shortly after Christmas, followed by multiple surgeries, aggressive chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy and another full year of chemotherapy pushed me to find a strength that I hadn’t known I possessed. I was always there to help anyone, without question, and now my family and I required the help of others. A community of women enfolded me in their warm, caring embrace and supported me on this crazy journey, sometimes shouting and, at other times, gently whispering reminders that I was strong enough to do this. Now two years cancer-free, I can reflect on my journey and use my knowledge to support others.
Q
Q
What does it mean to you to see other WestJetters wearing pink throughout October? WestJetters wearing pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder for other women to book their clinical breast examination check-up and mammogram appointment. The colour pink promotes awareness and the need for women to be cognizant of any pain or changes in their breasts. It is also a reminder to conduct lifesaving breast self-examinations in order to catch the illness early.

What words of encouragement do you have for others who have been impacted by breast cancer? Friends, families, children and spouses, coworkers, neighbours and strangers, those who have fought and won, those in our memories, and those who are just finding out what it means to fight: you are not ever alone. Pink is hope, pink is strength and, most importantly, pink is the colour that binds us together.

WESTJET.COM | OCTOBER • OCOTBRE 2019

She is one of 12 WestJetters chosen for the President’s Circle Award in 2018 – an award that recognizes WestJetters who consistently go above and beyond to create a remarkable guest experience. Based in Calgary, Colleen is known for her positive attitude and willingness to jump in and lend a hand. We sat down with Colleen after she won the President’s Circle Award to hear her thoughts on WestJet: Favourite WestJet destination: Cancun, Mexico, I feel at home when I’m there. I love the colour of the sea. I have even gone so far as to decorate my home in Calgary the same colour as the ocean. Describe WestJet in three words: Fun, supportive, family. What is one thing you want to share with our guests? We really care; it’ s not just what we say, it’s what we do. What is your favourite WestJet value and why? To align the interests of WestJetters with the interests of WestJet, as you can’t have one without the other. When WestJetters are wholeheartedly aligned with our company, all our values fall into place. Where do you see WestJet in the future? Everywhere! We are so well-known in Canada for our recognizable and trusted brand. Internationally, we have work to do. I am excited for the international expansion possibilities that the Dreamliner has created for our business. It won’t be long before the world knows about WestJet. What other WestJetters say about Colleen: Colleen, you are such an amazing leader out on the line, and your poise, knowledge, positivity and can-do attitude have such an incredible impact on everyone in WestJet’s world. We are so lucky to have you. Thank you for being you and being here!
