Taylor Van Ornum WoB Short Story Contest 11/13/15 The Scarer, Chapter 1 The night was cold; the kind of cold that rattles your bones and threatens frostbite as you step out the door. You could see your breath in the air, white and cloud-like, but then again, when you live in the middle of Vermont in the fall, you can always see it. We didn’t care. The weather was the least of our worries as we entered the maze on that solemn autumn night, unknowing of what was to come.
We thought that by going as a group, Indy, Bran, and I, that we’d get out quicker, great
minds think alike, we’d thought. So, as we purchased tickets to Petunia’s Haunted Corn Maze, more than just caffeine and excitement buzzed inside us; fear flooded through our veins, adrenaline slowly building.
The maze spanned ten acres, with twists and turns and paid “Scarers” winding
throughout. It was a cheap job to be a scarer, something people did in between seasonal jobs or
