From Handsworth to Hollywood - The Journey of Reggae’s International Am-BASS-Ador
In most bands, it’s often the lead singer who garners the most attention. But for those who understand the heartbeat of a performance, it’s the musicians, the ones laying the foundation, who truly hold the groove. Such is the case with Amlak Tafari, the dynamic and high-energy bass player for the legendary British reggae band Steel Pulse. Charismatic on stage and comedic on social media, Amlak describes himself as the “International Reggae Am-BASS-Ador.”
But beyond the persona lies a story of musical dedication, cultural advocacy, and global impact.
Born in Handsworth, Birmingham, UK, to Jamaican parents, Amlak’s musical journey began early. As a child, he formed a “cardboard band,” crafting instruments from Tupperware and cardboard. Like many UK schoolchildren at the time, he also learned to play the recorder and mouth organ. His first real foray into music came through the church, where he played in a steel band performing Caribbeaninfluenced music.
What began as a necessity quickly evolved into his musical calling.
In 1989, Amlak became lead guitarist for Pato Banton and the Reggae Revolution and also did stints with Tippa Irie, Earl Sixteen, and Mikey Dread. In 1991, he returned to Pato’s band—this time as the bass player. Notably, he wrote and performed the Spanish DJ-rap for “Ven A Mi Fiesta” on Pato's Stay Positive album, showcasing his linguistic versatility and creative range.
His transition to reggae began when members of a reggae band visited his church. He soon joined them, playing rhythm guitar in a group called Pride and Joy. From there, his path led to the Amlak Band, which toured Europe backing major reggae artists. It was with this group that Amlak made a pivotal switch to bass guitar. When their bassist abruptly quit just two weeks before a major show with Big Youth in Paris, Amlak stepped up.
A year later, Amlak relocated to California with Pato Banton, a collaboration that lasted until 1998. While in the U.S., Amlak toured with the Wailing Souls and later formed Yellow Wall Dub, initially a solo project that expanded with the addition of the late guitarist Fazal Prendergast. Based in the Bay Area, Yellow Wall Dub became the goto backing band for artists like Don Carlos, Apple Gabriel, Sister Carol, Luciano, The Itals, Ras Shilo, and The Abyssinians.
Simultaneously, Amlak managed artists, coordinated tours, and MC’d major shows across the U.S.
Eventually, he returned to the UK, where he launched Yellow Wall Dub UK and Yellow Wall Productions Music and Mentoring Services. Meanwhile, Yellow Wall Dub USA continued supporting reggae luminaries such as Yami Bolo, The Melodians, The Mighty Diamonds, and Frankie Paul. Throughout his career, Amlak has written, produced, and performed alongside countless international artists.
In 2005, Amlak joined Steel Pulse as their bass guitarist, replacing Alvin Ewen. Despite the band's demanding tour schedule, Amlak remains committed to community upliftment. He is a dedicated mentor and workshop facilitator, working with organizations like East Staffordshire Racial Equality Council (UK), Express Yourself Youth Projects (USA), and Biruta (Brazil). He regularly visits schools and correctional facilities, aiming to connect with youth who may feel unreachable by traditional voices.
A powerful advocate for reggae’s cultural integrity, Amlak has begun sharing his insights through public speaking. One of his key messages centers on preserving reggae’s historical and spiritual roots. “There’s reggae reggae everywhere, but not a Rasta in sight,” he says, not as a critique of non-Rastas, but as a call to remember reggae’s foundation in Rastafarian consciousness and the struggles that birthed it.
Amlak believes that reggae, like a great tree, cannot thrive without its roots. “No matter how big the tree, without the roots, it will topple. But it’s not a one-way thing, the tree needs the leaves and fruit too.” He emphasizes that although reggae was born from sufferation, every generation connects to the music in different ways. “The younger generation in the U.S. may vibe more with surfing, weed culture, and sunshine. That doesn’t mean their reggae isn’t real, it’s just from a different lens.” For Amlak, the key is understanding the lineage. “You’re wiser if you know where you come from. Peace, love, and unity, that message remains the same.”
Amlak holds a Bachelor’s degree in Popular Music, a Master’s in Musicology, and is currently pursuing a PhD.
His work is as diverse as his resume. He sits on the board of E.P.I.C. (Environmental Protection In The Caribbean) and is partnering with Professor Paul Sikkel of the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School on a new initiative, details of which remain under wraps for now. Their connection began when Professor Sikkel named a newly discovered Caribbean parasite after Bob Marley, sparking controversy in the Rastafarian community. Amlak helped bridge the cultural gap in a thoughtful and widely viewed YouTube interview.
New musical releases are on the horizon, and fans can stay updated through Amlak’s Instagram @amlak_tafari the TiReD TaFaR oN ToUr, where he entertains thousands with his spontaneous “You are now live, which means I am A-Live” broadcasts, his way of giving thanks and keeping the connection real. After every reggae show, Amlak makes time to meet fans, ask questions, and spread positive energy.
His live speaking series, From Handsworth to Hollywood, serves as a living autobiography, tracing his journey from near-death at the hands of police to international acclaim with Steel Pulse. These talks are informative, humorous, and deeply moving, and he’s available for Corporate, Entertainment, and Motivational events.
From cardboard instruments to global stages, Amlak Tafari’s journey is still unfolding. One thing is clear: this Am-BASS-Ador of reggae is far from done. From Handsworth To Hollywood, his reggae journey is just the beginning.

Kwame Nsiah Apau, known popularly as Okyeame Kwame (OK), is an award-winning musician. For 25 years, Okyeame Kwame has been recording and performing progressive music that brings joy, happiness and development to his audience. Conscious of the eminent need to spread love in the world, the lyricist consistently churns out songs with didactic themes which are poetic and family friendly. He goes beyond soothing the ears and calming the spirit with his music and throws his gravitas behind developmental activities and nation building agenda. Kwame's ability to stay relevant over two decades shows evidence of his hardworking / team playing spirit and leadership. Okyeame Kwame is not your regular artist; he is an artivist. Even though he holds the coveted award of artiste of the year from 2009 Ghana Music Awards, his iconographic excellence spreads to advocacy, youth empowerment, business and entrepreneurship, higher education, Climate consciousness and promoting high family values. It is no wonder therefore that he has been acknowledged and awarded by The Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu, Mayor Cranley, president of Ghana, Barack Obama, as well institutions like World Bank, UNICEF, National Commission on Culture and World reader and many more.
As a writer, Okyeame Kwame has co-authored two books with his wife; Love Locked Down - finding a lasting Love Relationship (Book 1), Maintaining a Lasting Love Relationship (Book 2). He has also served as a Columnist at Spectator, and a writer at Ghana Web with his own blog. Okyeame Kwame, in 2014 and 2016 wrote two (2) stage plays titled the Versatile Show and The Beggar respectively.
As an artiste, Okyeame Kwame has starred in a 2022 DisneyPlus special which features his entire family.
In 2010 Okyeame Kwame graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology with a Degree in linguistics and a Masters degree in Marketing Strategy from University of Ghana Business school in 2016. In same 2016, Okyeame Kwame became a recipient of Honorary Chartered Marketing Certificate from Chartered Institute of Marketing UK.
With his interest in nation building, Okyeame Kwame created and championed the Made In Ghana Campaign using the powerful tool of music and advocacy by creating the Made In Ghana Album and promoting the campaign both locally and abroad using his own resources. Following that, the position of Made In Ghana Ambassador was conferred on him by the ministry of trade in Ghana, Cultural / tourism ambassador by the ministry of tourism, Wear Ghana Ambassador by the National Commission on Culture. Red Ink Magazine had the pleasure of asking Okyeame a few questions and this is what he told us.
REDINK: Who influenced you to become an artist?
OK: Long story, My mum introduced me to poetry recital at an early age. She will teach me Akan poems when I was five years and I would go from house to house reciting them. This gave a lot of joy to my audience but a lot more to me. So growing up I knew I was going to do something with poetry. I didn’t know what exactly but it made me take my languages class seriously. In 1992 when Hiphop music had become the gem and everybody was catching the fever, I added my ability to write and recite poems to the literature I had learnt and school
and started adding rhythmic cadences to it and it became raps . It is important to note that I was dyslexic and found it difficult to read and write as a child so education was not a pleasant experience since I was beaten and bullied by teachers for not being smart. It was rap music that gave me a voice and gave me confidence.
REDINK: Favorite projects worked on?
OK: Yes my made in Ghana album which was the first body of work that I did which wasn’t trying to show the world that I was the best rapper is one of my favorite albums. The album was more about the people than it was about me. You see, my previous solo albums were titled “bohye ba“ meaning I was the promised child . Another was titled M’anwensem meaning my poetry while’s another was called Mr Versatile. All these albums reflected the competitive nature of my craft but the @made in Ghana album was about the people and their struggles and stories.
I have also worked on making hepatites popular and Ghana through advocacy and free vaccinations for Ghanaians. That really soothes my soul and remind me that there is more to do than to be a popular musician. Continued on page 10

REDINK: If u could collaborate with someone you never did?
HW: It would be Nas because he discusses global issues from a ghetto perspective and the love that he put in conscious raps creates a high level of intellectualism and swagg which is beautiful to experience. I would love to explore a song with him about decolonizing the African mind. In fact, I wish to sit down with him and have a conversation about this and I strongly believe we both can touch a nerve on this path. Plus he is the goat.
REDINK: Tell us about your latest project “clap”
HW: Clap is a single taken from my upcoming album “gentle rebel”
The album is an anti-social music recordings that seeks to uproot social injustice against women, children, global south, and also to increase awareness of the need for more love in the world today. The clap was was written to encourage people to appreciate the successes of others and through the practice of the Central African philosophy called Ubuntu ( I am because You are )
The song is set up in the reggae genre and cheerfully performed in a happy mode so children can identify with it at a
friendly level . It was produced by the super talented Daniel Grahl who doubles as my music director in the band I have been performing with for over 15 years.
REDINK: Where do u see yourself in the next 10 years?
HW: I have many faces. The academic, the businessman, the father, the musician, the advocate, the health and wellness influencer etc but in the next 10 years I would be seen as the visionary.
I wish to deepen my responsibilities in all these areas to the point that my being, music and person just bring development to my people. In the next 10 years I see myself in the classroom teaching, I see investing in incubations that nurture artistic freedom, I see myself in the mirror at 60 years with eight packs on my stomach. I also see myself as minister of gender and social protection or maybe the president of Ghana. I do not know but I know I will be serving love through my music and bringing development through advocacy.
REDINK: What can we expect from you next?
HW: Expect the use of music for sharing love and an opportunity to be fully misunderstood. Expect trouble, expect antisocial behavior that drags down the unfortunate status-quo.

Reggae artist Mosiah steps forward with his new single “Revolution Time,” featuring Trinidadian reggae artist Jah Defender, releasing worldwide on May 22nd via the House Of Riddim label.
Produced by House of Riddim, the track serves as the first single from Mosiah’s upcoming EP, Unconquerable. Rooted in conscious reggae tradition, “Revolution Time” delivers a timely message of awareness, resilience, and strength in challenging times.
Driven by authentic reggae instrumentation and powerful lyrical delivery, the song blends Mosiah’s energetic vocal presence with Jah Defender’s distinctive Trinidadian flavor, creating a collaboration that speaks directly to reggae audiences worldwide.

With House Of Riddim’s internationally respected production pedigree behind the release, “Revolution Time” positions Mosiah as an emerging voice carrying forward the tradition of authentic roots reggae music.
Bibizamena Abass, a 61 year old woman from Guyana who now resides in Orlando Florida, made her ultimate dream come true by trekking Mount Everest. Her journey began May 8th 2026 on her way to Nepal and made it to Everest base camp on May 15th 2026. She was so ecstatic to make this amazing accomplishment, Bibizamena proudly held up her birth country’s flag and show it off to the world. A five year preparation of determination, persistences, physically and mentally readiness was completed. A quote from Mrs. Abass “You should try and see how far you can go, to see what you can do with this life, because it is full of possibilities, there are lots of cool places you can go to see, you just need a dream in your heart with courage, and challenge yourself”.
Red Ink Magazine had the pleasure of asking Bibizamena a few questions and this is what she told us.
REDINK: Please tell us a little about yourself.
BA: I love nature and I like to challenge myself. Growing up in Guyana I did a lot of outdoor activities with my brothers like fishing, farming and horseback riding.
REDINK: When did you decide that you wanted to trek Mt Everest and why?
BA: I decided about 5 years ago because as a young girl I was always fascinated with mount everest climbs. I decided to do now because I did hikes in Hawaii, Switzerland and Iceland and felt that I was ready for this challenge and since I was getting older and if I did not do it now then I would not be able to do it as I get even older.
REDINK: Tell us some of the preparations you had to make and how long it took you.
BA: I was always active which helped but I had to do more long walks and use stair climbers with a backpack with 10-15 lbs weights. I also did breathing exercises in preparation for the high altitude. Not forgetting to increase my protein intake. I made sure I was able and ready for this amazing adventure.
REDINK: What was the experience like for you?
BA: It was a lifetime experience for me filled with challenges, risks and facing my fears but at the same time
it allowed me to realize my true potential, strength and inner self.
REDINK: How did you feel when you made it to the Base Camp?
BA: When I got to Everest base camp I felt I had accomplished my dreams come true, I was extremely happy and proud of myself that was expressed in tears of joy and relief that I finally did it.

ello again RED INK foodies! In this issue we hope you enjoy our wonderful recipe selection for this month. We are always happy to share with our readers a fun recipe for you to try. Enjoy!
If your peppers don't sit upright on your cutting board, trim about 1/8-inch off the bottoms to even them out so they can stand without falling over. Cut the top off each pepper about 1/2-inch down. Remove and discard the stems, then finely chop the remaining flesh from the tops. Scoop out the seeds and as much of the membranes as you can. Place the peppers in a large microwave-safe bowl with 1/2 cup water. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on high power for 12 minutes. Carefully uncover and let them sit until ready to assemble.
Step 2
Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat. Spread the beef in an even layer and cook undisturbed until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Toss and continue to cook, breaking up any clumps with the back of a spoon and scraping up any browned bits from the pan until the meat is lightly browned all over, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer the browned meat to a large bowl with a slotted spoon.
Step 3
Reduce the heat to medium. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil and add the reserved chopped peppers, onions, garlic, thyme, 4 teaspoons salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender but not browned, 10 to 12 minutes. Add the tomatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, until falling apart and much of the liquid has evaporated, about 7 minutes.
Step 4
Stir in the tomato paste and cook, stirring constantly until brick red colored, about 1 minute. Stir in the wine and cook until the mixture is reduced, very thick and no smell of alcohol remains, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the broth and bring to a boil. Transfer to the bowl with the beef. Stir in the rice until completely combined. (The mixture will be wet.) Season with salt and pepper.
Step 5
Arrange a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 450 degrees F.
Step 6
Place the peppers cut-side up in a 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Spoon the filling into the peppers, gently pressing it in with the back of a spoon. Be careful not to overstuff and split the sides of the peppers. Bake for 15 minutes. Then top with the cheese and continue baking until the filling is heated through and the cheese is browned in spots, 10 to 12 minutes.
