Elephant Man
T
he boisterous DJ Elephant Man (aka Energy God) was born O’Neil Bryan in 1974. Overly large ears as a child earned him the nickname “Dumbo Elephant” from his classmates in the Seaview Gardens area of Kingston, Jamaica. Shabba Ranks and Bounty Killer were Seaview residents at the time, and with King Jammy’s studio not so far away, Elephant Man had an early exposure to dancehall culture. While singing at the gates of Ranks and Jammy’s studios, Bounty Killer heard him and suggested forming a group with other Seaview teens. The group was originally called the Seaview Family, but after Bounty Killer had a massive hit with “Big Guns Scare Dem,” the name changed to Scare Dem Crew. Scare Dem Crew only released one album but played multiple festivals around Jamaica, giving Elephant Man a chance to refine his on-stage persona. Dancehall night at 1998’s Reggae Sumfest was a highlight, with Elephant Man climbing up a television camera crane and delivering his energetic rhymes high above the audience. The rest of Scare Dem started to question the DJ’s ability to be a team player and Elephant Man left the group feeling disrespected. Solo, he was able to incorporate the hip-hop rhythms he loved on his full-length debut, Comin’ 4 You, released by Greensleeves in 2000. The title cut from his second release, Log On, was a huge hit and the album’s WTC attacks commentary attracted a wealth of attention from the press. A duet with one of Elephant Man’s favorite rappers, Busta Rhymes, appeared on a remix of Lil Jon’s “Get Low,” and Mariah Carey recruited the DJ for an appearance on her Charmbracelet album. Atlantic Records took note of his growing popularity and released his major-label debut, Good 2 Go, in late 2003 while his “Pon di River, Pon di Bank” single was taking urban radio by storm. In 2008 the Let’s Get Physical album appeared on the VP label in partnership with P. Diddy’s Bad Boy Records. It featured the single “Five-O” with Wyclef Jean, while Chris Brown and Busta Rhymes appeared elsewhere on the album. Featuring the Jamaican hit “Nuh Linga,” the 2011 effort Dance & Sweep! Adventures of the Energy God found him back on VP proper.. vprecords.com u 5

ESTELLE
E
stelle Fanta Swaray (born 18 January 1980) is a British singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, and actress from West London, England. Estelle is known for her eclectic mix of various musical genres including R&B, soul, reggae, grime, hip hop and dance. She has experienced mainstream success with the single "American Boy" featuring Kanye West, reaching number 1 in the United Kingdom, and her collaboration with David Guetta in "One Love". Estelle has released several critically acclaimed records and received a Grammy Award. She has collaborated with artists including John Legend, Robin Thicke, Rick Ross, Chris Brown, will.i.am, Kanye West and De La Soul. Since 2013, she has voiced the fictional character Garnet in the animated TV series Steven Universe, in which she provides the vocals for her character in numerous songs. Estelle Swaray was born and raised in Hammersmith, London, England. Her mother's family came from Dakar, Senegal, and her father is from the Caribbean island of Grenada, when they were French and British colonies respectively. She was the second born of nine children. Estelle's parents were very religious when she was growing up, and secular music was not allowed in the family's home. Instead, spiritual music—particularly American gospel—and traditional African music were what Estelle grew up listening to. However, she would sometimes listen to hip hop when not at home. She spent her childhood listening to her parents' reggae records and her aunt's soul collection before discovering hip hop. "I got into hip hop from my uncle; he was always playing us Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane; he was a bad boy and my mum wasn't really happy that I was hanging out with him". By the time she was in her early 20s, she had decided on a music career. Estelle got her start in London's renowned hip-hop record store Deal Real. Her fellow employees encouraged her to take a chance and get on the mic onstage; soon she was playing numerous 8

London clubs and appearing with the likes of Manuva and Rodney P. Local hero Skitz asked her to appear on his 2000 album, Countryman, and soon she landed on albums by artists such as The 57th Dynasty and Blak Twang. She made her solo debut in 2003 with the 12" "Excuse Me", released on the label Paradise Isle. Her career got a jump-start in the early 2000s when she happened to see Kanye West sitting in a restaurant while on a trip to Los Angeles. Estelle approached Kanye, introduced herself and asked for an introduction to John Legend. She eventually got that introduction, and Legend eventually helped produce two songs on her debut album. Estelle's debut album, The 18th Day, was released in the UK in October 2004. Her breakthrough track came when "1980" was released by the V2 label and reached number 14 on the UK pop chart. a street-level mixtape series called Da Heat and further 12"s like "Free" and "Go Gone" helped build a loyal following, and Estelle gave back to the UK hip-hop scene by forming her own Stellarents label to sign new artists. In October 2004, V2 released her album, it took its title after how Estelle's mother almost died while giving birth to the future singer on 18 January. The album was a modest success, debuting at No. 35 on the UK albums chart, and generating two top 20 singles. She also received a MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Award in the UK for Best Newcomer 2008–09: Shine Three years later, US R&B singer John Legend announced that Estelle would be the first signee to his Homeschool label, distributed by Atlantic in the US. Four years after The 18th Day's release, Estelle returned with her second album, Shine. Though it was her second album, it was the first to be released in the US and her major-label debut. The pop-ish lead single, "American Boy" featuring Kanye West, was her first international hit and reached the top 10 in at least a dozen countries, including the US, Canada, Ireland, Australia and Turkey. The second album, Shine, was released in April 2008 and peaked at number six in the UK, while "American Boy" topped the UK chart and reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Whereas her 2004 debut album, The 18th Day from V2 Records, was totally self-created, Shine marks the first time Estelle has brought other producers and artists into the creative process with her. Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, Wyclef Jean, Will.i.am, Mark Ronson and Cee-Lo Green and Jack Splash all lend talents to the album, executive produced by John Legend. "Her sound is a unique blend of hip hop, R&B, reggae and soul, explains Legend. She has a special voice, unlike any other voice out there in mainstream music, and she can really write. She writes hip lyrics with unforgettable melodies. I recognised that in her when I first worked with her in 2004." He continues, "I'm excited and honored to have Estelle as the first artist on my label, Homeschool Records. I believe the world is going to fall in love with her album, as I already have. Estelle is an amazing talent, and she's going to do big things. The lead single, "Wait a Minute (Just a Touch)", released in November 2007. In 2008, Estelle rose to fame with her collaboration with rapper Kanye West, titled "American Boy". This song reached the top 10 in many countries worldwide, including the United States and Canada, as well as achieving number-one
status on the UK Singles Chart. and in Belgium and Israel. The song won many awards worldwide, including Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and is rumored to be inspired by American comedy writer Sam Means after the artist met him near a plane. It was also nominated for Song of the Year at the 51st Grammy Awards."American Boy" was Number 7 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008. The song was nominated for the 2009 Brit Award for Best British Single, and Estelle was also nominated for Best British Female Artist. Shine was released following the single on John Legend's HomeSchool label, reaching the albums chart in most countries worldwide, including number 6 in the UK. Shine sold enough copies to be certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry, and was shortlisted for the prestigious 2008 Mercury Music Prize. Shine has been certified Gold in the UK, denoting 100,000 copies sold. The album has sold 233,000 copies in the United States as of January 2012. Shine was one of the twelve nominees for the 2008 Mercury Prize. Estelle has also released a single with American rapper Busta Rhymes called "World Go Round", from his album Back on My B.S., which was released on 19 May 2009. In February 2009, the song "Star" was released; it is also used for Crystal Light commercials. In 2009, Estelle started working on her upcoming third studio album, All of Me. Estelle made a cameo appearance in the video for new star Mr Hudson for his single "Supernova". Estelle made an appearance on 11 August 2009 episode of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. She performed the song "Good Girls Go Bad" with Cobra Starship in Leighton Meester's absence. JUNIOR REID
R
eid was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and had a tough upbringing in the city's Waterhouse district, notorious for being one of the most dangerous places in Jamaica.[1] It was there in the politically turbulent late '70s that he recorded his first-ever single "Speak the Truth" at the age of 13 for the late Hugh Mundell, released in Jamaica on Augustus Pablo's Rockers International label, and popular as an import single in the United Kingdom. UK label Greensleeves Records followed this with "Know Myself" in 1981. He then went on to form his own band, the Voice of Progress, and after a local hit with "Mini-Bus Driver" the group scored local success with an album of the same name. By the early '80s, commissioned by the great Sugar Minott to record a number of tunes on Minott's Youth Promotion label, enjoying considerable popularity with tracks such as "Human Nature" (produced by Junior Reid), "A1 Lover" (produced by Sugar Minnott), and the evergreen "Foreign Mind", an uplifting and proud statement which became an anthem to the ghetto youth whom Reid increasingly championed. Junior Reid transferred his talents to King Jammy's studio on St. Lucia Road where his fastgrowing success rose yet another notch. "Boom Shacka Lacka" was his first UK hit and led to another exceptional album. After a number of fine singles – which included "Youthman", "Bank Clerk", "Sufferation", "Give Thanks and Praises" and "Higgler Move". Reid then launched his label "Jr Productions" with his first single "Settle Down" by Barrington Levy. His opportunity to then reach a wider international audience came with the offer to be the lead singer in Black Uhuru. Always a strong follower of Black Uhuru, and with a similar vocal style, Reid took the group to another level. Three of the singles he did with Black Uhuru "Pain", "Nah Get Rich and Switch", and "Let us Pray" were released on Junior Reid's label JR Productions. The collaboration on his first Black Uhuru album, the Grammynominated Brutal, in 1986, was well received by all and during the time he was with Black Uhuru they toured Europe, the UK, The USA, Canada and Bermuda. Two years and three albums later, Junior's interest to produce material for himself, and desire to regain his domestic popularity, drove him into the solo arena and into his own studio (One Blood Recording Studio), as well as focusing on his own label JR Productions. Reid had a number 21 hit in the UK in 1988 with the collaboration with Coldcut, "Stop This Crazy Thing".[1] He had an even bigger hit in 1990, with "I'm Free", recorded with The Soup Dragons, reaching number 5. Meanwhile, 1989's "One Blood" saw him re-established at the forefront of the reggae scene. "One Blood" became an anthem for unity in America and around the world. According to Rolling 10
RED INK MAGAZINE
O N E B LO O D Stone magazine (May 7, 2013), the lyrics of "One Blood" were the source of the album title for Vampire Weekend's third release, Modern Vampires of the City. Production work As a producer, Reid has his own production company; JR Productions. He produced two songs on Snow's second album, Murder Love, released in 1995. Reid has collaborated and produced for Dancehall artist Ninjaman, on many occasions since the early 1990s. He has also produced for Mighty Diamond, Big Youth, Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs. He produced all of this work in his own recording studio, which he opened in 1988. His vocals have been used in the hip hop scene, which debuted as a collaboration on the songs "One Blood Under W" and "Jah World" from The W album by the Wu-Tang Clan, which was released on 21 November 2000. His next collaboration with Guru on the song "Mashing Up the World" on the album "Jaz Mattaz". In 2006, he collaborated with West Coast hip hop artist Game on the song "It's Okay (One Blood)"; The song also samples Reid's 1989 single "One Blood". The song hit the top of the billboards and it was also included in the video game Def Jam: Icon for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. The song was then remixed again and the official remix was released on November 7, 2006. It features 25 hip-hop artists including The Game. Reid appeared on the Blackout remix of Mims' "This Is Why I'm Hot" from his debut album M.I.M.S. (Music Is My Savior). This was one of the more popular remixes made in 2007. He recently did a song with Jim Jones, Max B and Mel Matrix called "What A Gwan", which features a sample from Barrington Levy's "Black Roses". Reid is on Fabolous's album From Nothin' to Somethin' on the track "Gangsta Don't Play" and he has collaborated with Fat Joe on the track "More Money". He appeared on the remix of Smitty's song "Died In Your Arms" also featuring Rick Ross and T-Pain. In late 2007 he performed in the "Freedom Concert" in Port Harcourt, Nigeria and also went on to record the remix version of "Free" with The Indispensibles, a Nigerian hip hop duo. Reid was also proudly featured on the track "Fire" from San Franciscobased DJ and deep house producer Miguel Migs' 2007 album "Those Things." On 18 November 2007, Reid performed alongside Alicia Keys at the 2007 American Music Awards. Reid is also featured on a remix version of Alicia Keys' single "No One". He also did a song with Lil Wayne called "Ghetto Youths Rock". In 2008, Reid was featured on Bun B's song "If It Was Up II Me" off his album II Trill.
In 2011, Junior Reid teamed up with Ludacris, T-Pain, Busta Rhymes, Mavado, Bun B, Game, Twista, Jadakiss, Waka Flocka Flame, Fat Joe, Ace Hood & Birdman in the remix of DJ Khaled's "Welcome to My Hood". "Welcome To My Hood" (featuring Rick Ross, Lil Wayne & Plies) is the lead single of DJ Khaled's 5th studio album We the Best Forever. In May 2013 Reid performed as a headliner at the Reggae On the Hills festival in Barbados. The festival was well attended with over 60,000 people in attendance, the largest crowd in their history, and Junior Reid's appearance was in wide anticipation. His most recent singles are "Sharing the Night Together", "Never Let you Go", "Same Boat" and are being played widely in Jamaica and across the world. Junior Reid released a mixtape in May 2013 called Kingston Firehouse which is leading up to his album Junior Reid Living Legend. Reid's son, also named Junior, has followed him into a career in music, working under the name Juju Blood. In an August 2014 interview with Midnight Raver, record producer Delroy Wright revealed that he has unreleased Junior Reid material from the Firehouse Clash sessions that he is planning to release on his Live & Learn record label. u 11

egarded as one of Jamaica’s most promising young acts, the band Raging Fyah makes music that is tethered to their island’s enduring, much emulated roots rock reggae tradition yet is distinguished by an expansive vision that propels their musical journey forward. The five piece band from Kingston, Jamaica, received critical acclaim for the intricate harmonies, nuanced musicianship and impressive songwriting skills showcased on their previous self-released albums, Judgement Day (2011) and Destiny (2014), earning comparisons to legendary reggae outfits including England’s Aswad and Steel Pulse, and Jamaica’s beloved Third World. “That ‘70s vibe is a complete natural for us,” says singer and guitarist Kumar Bent. “We all listened to a lot of music from that period. The Wailers, Third World, and the British reggae bands like Steel Pulse and Aswad. It’s a big influence.” Pele, Demar and Anthony Watson met while studying music at Kingston’s Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, under the tutelage of Ibo Cooper, former keyboardist with Third World. They joined forces with veteran guitarist Courtland “Gizmo” White and formed Inside Out in 2002 before changing their name to Raging Fyah in 2006. The band spent years backing artists at major stage shows in Jamaica; their long held ambition to perform original music became a reality when Kumar Bent signed on as lead singer

in 2010. Kumar attended Edna Manley College a few years after his band mates, initially studying piano; at Cooper’s insistence he began writing and singing his own songs. “That was when we really began rehearsing and writing,” explains bass player Delroy Hamilton. “There’s no one person who writes the songs,” Bent says. “We all contribute. We’re a collective. Sometimes a piece can come out of a bassline or a drum lick. It has to have a vibe; if it does, then we work on it.” The Fyah Squad spent time honing their material and integrating knowledge from their time at Edna and from their individual experiences supporting other Jamaican veterans. Each member bringing their own groove, life experiences and musical influences recognized the mutual dedication required to take their efforts to the next level. They were all ready to dedicate themselves full-time to Raging Fyah which then led to the decision that the next step was to make an album. “It took a while,” Hamilton admits, “…but we needed to make the transition from just playing to understanding how serious we all were about this. We were always passionate about our music, but finally we were ready to make that commitment and take on the sacrifices to do it properly.” In 2011, they released their critically acclaimed debut album Judgement Day, gaining instant popularity and presence locally and internationally.

Some of the songs like the title track Judgement Day and hit single Far Away received heavy rotation on the airwaves and even found their way onto a few notable charts. With conscious roots/reggae on the rise again, the “Fyah” continued to spread into 2012 as they steadily captured the hearts of the Jamaican listeners. There was a heavy demand for the talented and versatile band’s thrilling live performances at various shows – from intimate acoustic sets to large stage shows such as Rebel Salute and Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival. In that same year the band hit the road to perform on a number of global stages as well as to headline several major reggae festivals in Europe like Summerjam, Rototom Sunsplash and Garance. Destiny was a different journey, having been on the road for the majority of 2012 many recordings took place wherever they could. Some tracks were laid down in Poland during a stopover, others though, still came from the heartbeat of Jamaica. The lead cut, “Fight,” with its distinctive, ear catching whistling introduction along with “Mankind” were actually among the first songs the band ever recorded. “We did those two in 2008,” Bent recalls, “but it had never been the right time to release them before this [Destiny].” Their sophomore album, launched to the world in 2014, bringing with it rave reviews, widespread recognition and a
massive global following. The band has since been touring heavily throughout Europe, Costa Rica, Siberia and areas of the South Pacific promoting their message and delivering solid performances from both albums. “We try to show reality, but in a very positive way,’ notes Hamilton. “That hope of a better tomorrow is important to all of us. They’re messages to keep us all grounded, but to push ahead too. We’re optimistic and we want to communicate that to uplift people and make them feel better about the world.” Destiny shows how Raging Fyah has developed. Reggae is still the heartbeat of the sound, and the positivity of the lyrics remain as strong as ever. Fueled by passion, purpose and life experiences, their lyrics touch the soul of the listener, uplifting and motivating people from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Whether the message is love, peace or empowerment, Raging Fyah burns through barriers of time, age, race or class with relatable songs for everyone to love. Having completed their third album, Everlasting, debut May 27th, 2016 the Fyah Squad promises to deliver on this one as they set out to rekindle a flame of positivity in the music industry. vprecords.com u

His family moved to Cleveland, OH when he was a teenager and that is where, after dropping out of college to pursue a career in music, Ric met Benjamin Orr, his eventual partner and cofounder of The Cars. After forming a few small bands and performing as a duo, the pair eventually moved to Boston where they formed the now Legendary Rock Band, The Cars. Ocasek sang, played guitar and wrote most of the songs while Orr sang and played the Bass. Their music because iconic and genre breaking because they created their own unique sound by blending New Wave, 60’s Pop and 70’s Glam music styles to make something totally new. They became the inspiration for generations of musicians, showing them it is okay to be innovative and unique, breaking the trend of the time which was to try and match whatever was hot on the billboard charts. Some of the band’s first songs from 1978, “Good Times Roll” and “My Best Friends Girl,” are still Radio Mainstays to this day. As are some of their later hits the mid 80’s “You Might Think,” “Magic” and “Drive.” Not just for their music but also for their iconic look and innovative music videos they had regular coverage on MTV
throughout the 80’s. Even after the band broke up in 1988, their influence lived on. In 1994, Kurt Cobain and Nirvana covered their music at a concert. Ric Ocaske also produced music for many rock bands still popular today, including Weezer, No Doubt and Bad Religion. Just last year in 2018 The Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The music and memory Ric Ocasek and The Cars will live on forever. Ric Ocasek’s family has posted on Instagram and Twitter loving thoughts and expressions of the loss of their loving Husband and Father. His Passing was peaceful, yet unexpected and sudden. In one post, Ric’s sons posted that their father was a prolific doodler and always tried to inspire with his writing. His last doodle was found on his armchair the day he passed and was posted to social media and is here for all to see and be inspired by his last message to the world. Ric’s sons posted this message along with the doodle, “From Ric’s sons: Our dad was a prolific doodler. His passing was sudden, unexpected, and beyond heartbreaking. Yesterday, we found this last doodle on his armchair. He couldn’t have known what it would end up meaning to us. We love him so much.” These two Legendary Musicians, Eddie Money and Ric Ocasek, were taken from the world too soon, but will live on in the hearts of fans and the sounds flowing across the air waves forever. From Red Ink Magazine, our hearts are saddened at the loss of music icons and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends that have had an even deeper loss. u 19

Iconic Reggae Festival in Jamaica Revived After 14 Year Hiatus;
Reggae Sunsplash is Back in 2020.
amaica’s Reggae Sunsplash will return in November 2020. It will be held at Grizzly’s Plantation Cove near Ocho Rios. Lineup has yet to be announced, but we know it is going to be huge. The event will be spanning all generations. It will be spread out over two nights, with the first night being dedicated to traditional reggae and will feature artists who became famous before the year 2000, so expect to hear and see some of your favorite artists form the 80’s and 90’s. The second night will have a more dancehall focus featuring artists from 2000 and upward so expect to see and hear your favorite artists from today. There are even plans to feature tribute videos to honor those reggae artists like Bob Marley that are no longer with us, but who have performed at Sunsplash in the past; similar to what they do at the Grammy’s and Oscar’s with their “in memorium.” Reggae Sunsplash was the first organized Reggae Festival in Jamaica. So groundbreaking was the event that the government of Jamaica in 1978 did not initially support the event, because they didn’t think Reggae, Rasta and Ganja was the right image for Jamaica. They didn’t think that tourists would pay money to see Reggae
J

because it was too new and too ethnic. Now that image is what drives tourism to Jamaica and keeps Jamaica prosperous. Millions of people from all walks of life, nationalities, races and creeds all flock to Jamaica every year to experience the music, sights and sounds that the government originally feared would hurt tourism. The inaugural Reggae Sunsplash featured Burning Spear, Jacob Miller and Toots and the Maytals; among others. In 1979 international reggae icon Bob Marley headlined the event and in 1980 Peter Tosh was on the stage. And from then until 1992 the event was “THE” reggae event of the year every summer. Sunsplash became the founding father of sorts and the blueprint for all major Reggae Festivals up until today. From 1993-2006 other large scale Reggae Festival events started popping up and that along with several unanticipated venue changes over the years caused the group that created the event called Synergy to start seeing higher and higher costs with diminishing profit margins which ultimately led to the annual event to be no more. Now the Legendary festival is returning once again under new ownership under Jamaican media conglomerate eMedia Interactive Group. They are sparing no expense and leaving no talent behind. It has been stated that Robert “Chuckles” Stewart who has a history in the industry of producing incredible tours will be heading up the event’s production. He has worked on previous Sunsplash events in the past and is most famous for his incredible work producing tours for Sean Paul and he is the producer behind Buju Banton’s return to the stage after his release from prison. There is no doubt that this revival of Sunsplash will be no less legendary than its roots. u

The original second single from the album was announced as being "Fall in Love", which featured versions featuring Nas and John Legend. Due to the underperformance of both "Freak" and "Fall in Love", both songs were ultimately left off the final track listing for All of Me. However, "Freak" was featured on both the Step Up 3D soundtrack and the reissue of David Guetta's album One Love, titled One More Love. In 2010, Estelle also modelled at Naomi Campbell's Fashion For Relief runway show for The White Ribbon Alliance to raise funds for mothers in Haiti. She was also featured on Reflection Eternal's new album with the song Midnight Hour and last track of Gucci Mane's album The Appeal: Georgia's Most Wanted. "This is a new and exciting move for me," Estelle said in a press release. "BMG has been an awesome partner throughout my career, and with New London we plan to continue bridging the gap between soul, R&B, London and New York – uniting them through music." Added BMG executive president Richard Blackstone, "Estelle has been a valued member of the BMG family as a writer for some time now. She is a deeply passionate artist gifted with a tremendous voice and has music running through her veins. We are thrilled that Estelle has expanded our relationship and entered into a new partnership with BMG Label Services to release her upcoming album." She also began voicing Garnet in the animated series Steven Universe. In 2014, Estelle performed live at Amber Lounge, the original Formula One after-party, in Singapore. She would return for an exclusive performance at Amber Lounge Abu Dhabi in November. In March, she premiered the first single off her fourth album True Romance which was "Make Her Say (Beat It Up)."The follow-up single "Conqueror" premiered on 15 July
2014. After numerous delays, the album was released on 17 February 2015 in the US. In 2015, Estelle guest starred in the hit Fox TV show Empire, singing the duet version of her single "Conqueror" with Jussie Smollett, refuelling sales of the single (peaking at No. 42 on the Hot 100 and No. 15 on R&B) and making it her biggest US hit since her Grammy-winning "American Boy" with Kanye West. In October, Estelle accepted the invitation to be the grand marshal of Howard University Homecoming vs. Norfolk State University. She also sang "We'll Be There", the theme song for We Bare Bears. 2017–present: Lovers Rock In June 2017, she announced she's working on a full-length reggae album due for a late 2017 release, in addition to releasing the album's lead single "Love Like Ours" featuring Tarrus Riley. On July 13, 2018, the title of the album was revealed as Lovers Rock. The single "Better" was released along with the pre-order. The album was released on September 7, 2018. She currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. Influences For her ability to rap, sing, and write songs, Estelle has been praised by musicians such as John Legend and Roots Manuva; Estelle's taste in music encompasses Todd Rundgren, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, Nas, Jill Scott and Jay Z. In league with other contemporary British sirens like Amy Winehouse, Adele and Duffy, her main musical influences are Mary J. Blige and Ella Fitzgerald. In an interview, Estelle
remarked: "Every three years they are talking about the 'British (musical) invasion.' It's been ongoing. It's been an invasion for the last 10 years. We are here! We crossed over. I'm like one of the first black British artists to come over here and win a Grammy. We are here! Estelle's work has earned her numerous awards and accolades, including three MOBO Awards, a World Music Award, and one Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "American Boy". EAT HEALTHY AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar
W
ow, is it October already? I hope all you lovely people had a nice summer and enjoying the change of seasons and getting excited about the upcoming holiday season. No matter which holidays you celebrate, I’m sure it will include getting together with friends and family and of course FOOD! So that all those yummy holiday goodies don’t undo all of the hard work you have put into getting fit or staying fit, there are definitely tips that will get you through to ring in the New Year in a body you will love. To stay on track it’s time to get organized and begin your meal prep routine. Meal prepping can keep you on track with your healthy eating goals throughout the holidays. It is also a great way to take the guess work out of trying to figure out what to eat for your next meal. If you are serious about meal prepping then I would suggest starting out slowly. If you’re like me sometimes I can get into a health kick and go out and buy tons of things that I’m not sure if I like or if I can stick to the plan. Instead of jumping in head first with planning all of your meals, try one meal and a snack or two. When starting to think about what to prepare, think about the meal that tend to be the hardest to figure out “what to eat.” For me that typically is lunch and when there is this question in my head, I don’t always make the best choice. Secondly, plan a meal that you would actually enjoy eating. Don’t run out and buy a bunch of kale just because everyone says it’s good for you if you’ve never had it and you don’t know if you would enjoy it. Buying things that you do not like will increase the likelihood that you are wasting your time and money on prepping meals that you will most likely throw in the trash. I suggest starting out with a list of healthy foods that you actually enjoy eating and build a meal around that. Again, remember take baby steps if you’ve never meal planned before. Also, stock up on some sandwich baggies to prepare portions of snacks when cravings hit. A few snack choices could be mixed nuts, dried berries, crackers, dry cereal, granola, or chocolate kisses. Just about anything you crave, salty or sweet can be a perfect and satisfying portion sized snack to curb your hunger any time of day. Lastly, make meal planning a family event that if fun and enjoyable. Again, this will increase your chances of staying on track and avoid wasting food. Happy planning!

The “Original Don Dada” Louie Rankin Died In Tragic Car Crash in Canada. May his soul REST IN PEACE The Legendary Louie Rankin died on the morning of Monday, September 30th 2019. His death was the result of a car accident in Melancthon Township, in Ontario, Canada. Rankin had just announced a leading role in a new movie and the imminent release of his new album on social media in the days preceding the accident. Louie Rankin and his family have called Toronto home for the last several years. Too many legendary musicians have been lost this past month, but like all the others, Louie Rankin, The Original Don Dada, will live on forever in the hearts of his fans and the lyrics of his songs; and he will forever be immortalized on the film of his silver screen performances. Louie Rankin, was born Leonard Forbes, in Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica. He was one of the godfather’s of mainstream reggae/dancehall music, had songs that blew up the club scene in the early 90’s; those same songs still blow up the clubs to this day); and he had successful acting career, a success that rivaled his music. He is best known for his role in the 1998 Gangsta film “Belly,” where he played Jamaican Kingpin “Ox” and co-starred alongside DMX and Nas. So popular was this role, that he became known by many as Louie ‘Ox’ Rankin. Rankin was such a compelling character in his films that even his next role in “Shotta” became so iconic that many people referred to him publicly as his character name, Teddy Bruckshut. But do not let these excellent film roles over shadow what Louie Rankin was originally beloved for. He was a dancehall artiste, first and foremost, and was an inspiration and colleague of many of the great dancehall and reggae singers of our time. He was, “The Original Don Dadda” and his song “Typewriter” is a dancehall staple and a Grammy winning song as well. And even though his movie career had been in the spotlight over the last decade, his music career never fell behind, he even announced just two days before the car accident that his new album was about to drop. He posted on social media, #AlbumDone and #ReturnOfTheDonDaDa, his Instagram post read, “That album bout to drop!!! Can you smell what the Ox is cooking?!” Louie Rankin is survived by his wife and several children. They knew him as a strong family man and he saw them as a blessing in his life. In many interviews he often praised his wife and family. He mentioned the love and support they always had for him and his busy career schedule. It wasn’t just family and fans that admired Rankin, his peers have been coming to social media with incredible respect and admiration for this lost legend. Friend and dancehall artiste Popcaan wrote on Instagram after Rankin’s death, “Legends don’t die!!!! It is very unfortunate what happen to you fam … but god knows best.. rest up fada Louie your memories are forever..!!! @louie_rankin.” u By Michael Devine 25
